Is It Safe to Eat Ginseng During Pregnancy?
Ginseng has been widely consumed by people for centuries for its health benefits such as boosting immunity, lowering stress, and fighting fatigue. But can you have ginseng when pregnant? What are its benefits and side effects? Continue reading to find out.
What is Ginseng?
Ginseng is a type of herb found in both Asia and America. Ginseng is used for the benefits it provides, like boosting the immune system and increasing mental concentration. American ginseng is used to lower blood sugar levels in those suffering from Type 2 diabetes. It is also thought to reduce cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease.
Traditional Chinese medicine considers ginseng to be “heaty” by nature. Pregnant women are considered to be more prone to heat in traditional Chinese medicine, which could potentially cause harm to the foetus. Thus, ginseng is not recommended for pregnant women.
Types and Uses
Typically, two species of the herb are in popular use - the Asian ginseng and the American ginseng. The Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) is found in China and Korea and has been a part of their traditional medicine. The American ginseng (Panax quinquefolis) is native to North America, particularly Canada. Their dried root and extracts are used in the form of tablets, capsules, creams and tea.
Some of the uses of Ginseng include:
Boosts the immune system
Improves symptoms of menopause
Lowers muscle injury after exercise
Acts as a treatment for erectile dysfunction
Enhances memory, prevents dementia and improves mental performance
Improves digestion
Reasons Why You Should Avoid Ginseng in Pregnancy
Ginseng is generally not recommended during pregnancy, and here are the reasons why:
1. Risk of Birth Defects
An active chemical in Ginseng called ginsenoside Rb1 has been associated with developmental defects in the embryos of animals. The National Institutes of Health, because of this, strongly recommends against the usage of the herb during pregnancy and has labelled it as potentially unsafe.
2. Risk of Bleeding
The Korean Ginseng has anticoagulant properties that pose sufficient risks during pregnancy. It stops blood from clotting normally and could lead to serious problems during childbirth or afterwards.
3. Can Cause Diarrhea
A common side effect observed in women who have ginseng tea during pregnancy is diarrhoea. It is typically known to cause two or three watery stools during the day after consumptions. Diarrhoea leads to dehydration, which adversely affects the fetus. If you experience diarrhoea after consuming ginseng tea, visit the doctor immediately and drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
4. Disturbs Sleep
Ginseng is observed to cause disturbances during sleep in pregnant women. Apart from having difficulty going to sleep, waking up several times in the night is a common side effect of consuming ginseng supplements or tea. Poor sleep leads to fatigue and deterioration of health while worsening mood swings and stamina.
5. Dry Mouth
Pregnant women who consume ginseng tea often complain of dry mouth as well. This happens because of the poor functioning of salivary glands due to the enzymes present in ginseng. Pregnant women also experience dry mouth due to several factors such as anxiety, stress, and other medications. Consumption of ginseng adds to this and worsens the problem.
6. Lowers Blood Sugar
Pregnant women are at a high risk of developing diabetes and they are often unaware of it. Consuming ginseng can lead to imbalances in sugar levels, which can lead to dizziness and lowered heartbeat, both of which are dangerous to both the mother and fetus.
7. Can Cause Headaches
Ginseng is also known to cause headaches and muscle pain in the face and neck of pregnant women. This can add to the misery of morning sickness or mood swings they would be experiencing.
Ginseng is not recommended during pregnancy and is best avoided due to the side effects it causes in pregnant women.

PCOD and Depression - Not the End of the World, My Life Then and Now
Hi everyone.
Today I wish to write about how my life changed before and after discovering that I had PCOD.
Let me tell you that PCOD is not the end of your life. In fact, I struggled and came out of the depression that comes along with PCOD.
As you must be aware that polycystic ovarian disease can sometimes change your life for the worse.
Let me start from the time when I was in school. I had very shiny, smooth and clear skin. No pimples, no health issues. A very healthy teenager.
One day I noticed very minute pimples all over my forehead. I applied many anti allergic and antifungal ointments. Nothing happened. Day by day those minute pimples kept spreading all over my face, back and neck. Pimples were so many and extreme that my skin was barely visible. I did visit n number of doctors. Kept having medicines too.
None of the renowned doctors suggested a hormonal imbalance. Three years passed and I visited a doc in Lady Harding college. I took a few tests and medicines for a year. Everything changed. My pimples were gone.
I got married at 30. Planned baby at 31 but failed to conceive. Started having problems with periods so I visited a gynaecologist.
I was told that I had PCOD.
As a teenager when I was having acne issues, that was the first symptom of having PCOD.
I was slender always. No other symptom I ever noticed. Regular cycles.
Second symptom was at 31 when I had a bulging tummy and gastric issues.
Nobody ever bothered to get me tested when I was young. We must look for symptoms and visit doc in case there are some noticeable changes in the body.
In my case, people thought that acne is just a phase and nothing serious.
Anyway.
I read about it. Searched every website. I was devastated when I realised that having a baby will be a 50-50 chance. And some never have that chance at all.
I used to cry myself to sleep. Fights every day with husband. And family pressure was bad. People were talking things about us. I changed my eating habits. Nothing seemed to work. Praying to God helped in maintaining peace of mind.
Now What I Did Learn in That Phase
Stop eating junk food. Two or three morsels once in a blue moon won't hurt though.
Discard non-stick utensils. No plastic in everyday use. Use steel utensils. No microwave.
Eat healthy. Vegetables and fruits.
Lots of moong daal. Soup also helps.
Two bananas everyday.
Coco water everyday on an empty stomach.
Sesame seeds and walnuts do wonders. Eat everyday.
Wash cereals a lot than pressure cook.
Include lots of turmeric powder.
Flax seeds and various nuts and berries are a must to eat.
Eat preservative-free food. No canned food. No packaged juices.
Kiwi and strawberry are "power fruits".
Dates and figs should be included in your daily diet.
No curd and pickles at night.
Do pranayam and butterfly asan daily. Walk for 30 minutes daily.
Pray.
Take ur medicines religiously.
It helped me in getting rid of PCOD and a stressful personal life. I was able to conceive after 7 months.
I have a charming little boy of 8 months now.
I wish you all good luck. PCOD Is not the end of life.

Mom, Are You Also Raising a Childish Husband?
Is your partner childish? The right ways of dealing with an immature partner can kindle a sense of responsibility and the confidence to make better decisions. Soon, your husband will require no more parenting from you!
What do you do to deal with a partner who chooses to leave a room messy behind him, spills his drinks at most times, stays away from work to watch his favourite TV shows, or tells silly lies just to stay out of trouble?
How to Deal with a Childish Husband
1. Stop, Are You His Mom?
Parenting a full-grown man? When your childish hubby continues behaving in the same way as your kids, restrain the urge to correct or parent him. Simply treat him like any other man, and believe it or not he will start acting like one. On the other hand, if you nag him or keep telling him about what’s expected of him, he will start ignoring you or begin telling lies, just to maintain harmony at home.
2. You Are Our Idol, Dad
One of the best ways to deal with your husband's childish behaviour is to make him a role model who is admired and looked up to by one and all, especially his children. You may like to remind him, subtly, about the fact that he is setting an example for those little roving eyes in your life. So, instead of frowning or showing your displeasure when he fails to make his bed every morning, suggest in carefully chosen words that his habits need to change lest they impact the children.
3. Maturity is Better Than Criticism
No doubt, you're stressed about the childish behavioral patterns of your hubby, but that does not give you the right to practice intimidation, criticism, or any kind of manipulation for getting your way around him. The cycle can be broken if you start practicing maturity. Adopt kindness in your vocabulary and communicate only after choosing the right words and actions.
4. Disciplinary Actions Are Essential
It’s nice of your husband to give utmost priority to your kids, but when he keeps putting his own needs on the back burner for the cause, there is trouble brewing somewhere. Here, you start laying down the rules like a mom. Remember, when you acted tough with your parents, they ended up giving you a final ultimatum that made you stop dead in your tracks? Maybe that works for your partner too!
5. Praise His Mature Deeds
Even as you blink your eyes twice after seeing him act in a mature fashion, make all sincere efforts to praise him in front of everyone. Be it his call on responsible decisions, the way he handles tricky situations, or how he presents himself in a gathering, you must cheer him with encouraging words. Yes, that’s what he wants to hear.
Whatever you do, just don’t give up on your childish husband. With the right support and helping hand from you, he'll soon metamorphose into the man you always wished him to be. Read more

This Simple 5-step Method Will Help You Kick Self-hate Out of Your Life Forever!
How many times have you caught yourself thinking “I can never do things right” or “I’m such a loser/idiot”? Don’t be alarmed! You’re not the only one indulging in such negative self-talk! Still, if you really want to change your life you have to let go of this self loathing.
You might think that talking negative about yourself can be a reminder to stay anchored and work hard to achieve your goals. But what we tend to forget is that this criticism leads to low self-esteem and slowly erodes whatever confidence we possess. Try our proven pointers on how to stop self-criticism.
5 Steps to Stop Negative Self-Talk
1. Stuff it in a box
Experts suggest the “fit in the small box” technique as the perfect way to muzzle your inner critic. How do you do that? The next time you foul it up in an important meeting, don’t kick yourself all over the place about it. Instead, think about what you could've done to make the meeting better. This is a brilliant way of constructive criticism that also minimises the problem and helps you find a solution.
2. Use the carrot and stick approach
This is a motivational approach where you cut down on one of your indulgences when you self-criticise. For instance, if you love ice-cream, then don't buy yourself an ice-cream till the inner critic leaves you alone. Another more practical yet painful way to stop yourself from taking pot shots at yourself would be to wear a rubber band around your wrist and snap it when things head south. Ouch!
3. Put things in a better light
Sometimes all you need to do is change the way you look at things. Self-criticism is a unhealthy way to label yourself all the things that you aren’t. So what if you said something silly in front of the entire office? It was just a one-off for you, but to hear your inner critic talk, one would think you do it all the time! Your silly moment was just one incident and there is no way it defines you. You might have felt silly, but "you" aren’t silly. Understanding the difference between these two aspects can help you come to terms with the reality faster.
4. Stop airing your dirty laundry
What is self-criticism? If you look at it, it's the feeling of self-shaming yourself when you needn't. Your blunder might have actually been just a teensy blooper. Call your friend, share the shame and get a few laughs out of it. You’ll feel so much lighter than spending the entire night calling yourself all sorts of names!
5. Remember that nobody is perfect
Nobody is perfect and everyone has a right to make mistakes. Rather, these little mistakes signify that you’re at least trying to move forward. Only those who are stagnant never commit an error. Things happen. You need to learn to move on and stop getting serious about it.
So the next time you find yourself indulging in some unconstructive self-criticism, relax! Don’t let that nagging voice get started with your flawed self! Take a deep breath (maybe snap your rubber band a few times) and move on! Read more

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!

A. the average birth weight of neonates is about 3 kg.
during the first few days after birth, the newborn loses
extracellular fluid equivalent to about 10% of the body
weight.
most infants regain their birth weight by the age of 10 days. subsequently, they gain weight at a rate of
approximately 25 to 30 g per day for the first 3 months of life.
thereafter they gain about 400 g weight every month,
for the remaining part of the first year. x
an infant usually doubles his birth weight (taken as 3 kg) by the age of 5 months. the birth weight triples at 1 year and is four times at 2 years of age.
the weight of ca child at the age of three years is usually
five times that of the birth weight.
