Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) for Babies
When your child is suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting he can lose body fluids quickly and become dehydrated. Small sips of water every few minutes work well, but in case of severe diarrhoea, quite a lot of fluids can be lost in a short time. ORS given at such a time can protect your baby from dehydration and its serious effects.
What is ORS?
ORS stands for Oral Rehydration Solution. It is a solution of oral electrolytes given to children who are experiencing dehydration due to loss of body fluids in conditions such as diarrhoea and vomiting. ORS contains a mix of sodium, potassium, sugar and other important electrolytes needed by the body. When mixed and given in the right quantities, it can quickly replace the lost electrolytes and fluids to rehydrate the body.
When Does Your Baby Need Oral Rehydration Therapy?
Serious cases of dehydration are when ORS is given to infants. Most minor dehydration doesn’t need medical attention and can be treated with breast milk, water, formula and diluted juices. However severe dehydration caused by diseases such as viral gastroenteritis, also called stomach flu, needs ORS for treatment. Also look for the following symptoms of dehydration in kids:
Their eyes look sunken, dull or dry
Their lips appear stretched or chapped
Dry nappy with little or no urine
They may be lethargic and fussy
No tears when they cry
Cold hands and feet
Heartbeat is rapid
Soft spots on their head
Benefits of Oral Rehydration Solution
ORS is a highly effective treatment for diarrhoea in babies. It can treat dehydration caused by loss of fluids that cannot be treated in time by feeding water alone. To understand how fluid absorption in the body works, the concept of osmolarity should be understood. Osmolarity is a measure of the concentration of dissolved salts in a fluid that can apply an osmotic pressure on the fluid. When two solutions of different osmolarity are placed in contact with each other, fluid from the low osmolarity solution flows to the high osmolarity solution. Similar to how raisins soaked in water swell up after a while.
The principle behind ORS therapy is simple: When babies have diarrhoea, fluids move through their intestines too quickly to be absorbed like it does normally. The surface of their intestines is lined with something called ‘sodium-glucose co-transporters’, which is a protein that absorbs salt more effectively in the presence of glucose. What ORS does, therefore, is to give the right mix of glucose, salt and water so the salt and fluid absorption is maximised. Its benefits can be summarised as follows:
It contains the precise ratio of ingredients, and hence, used instead of sports drinks, paediatric electrolytes and IV hydration
No need for injections or IV transfer
It can be self-administered
ORS gives results within minutes of consumption
It can be used to proactively avoid dehydration
Studies have shown that it is safe for all age groups
What Are Oral Rehydration Salts Available as?
They are usually available in the form of oral rehydration powder or pre-mixed bottles available in pharmacies, health centres, markets, and shops. Normally one sachet is to be mixed with 200 ml of water and given to the baby. To maximise the effectiveness of the powder, it needs to be mixed with exactly the right amount of water specified on the sachet. All ORS powder contains a little bit of sugar and there is no need to add anything extra to it. The powders are usually cheaper and have a longer shelf life. Some of the commercial ORS brands include Infalyte, Pedialyte, Resol etc
How to Give ORS to Infants
Pour the powder into 200 ml of water that is boiled and cooled. Stir well until the powder completely dissolves and the water looks slightly cloudy.
Give your child the ORS in small and frequents amounts using a spoon, feeder or dropper. Ensure the first doses are small. Small amounts allow the child to better retain the solution without vomiting.
Gradually give them more until your child has had the full dose that is recommended to them. Allow them to take it at their own pace.
If the child refuses to drink, use a syringe to squirt the ORS into their mouth.
In rare cases involving hospitalisation, a child refusing to drink might be fed through a naso-gastric feeding tube.
What Quantity of ORS Your Child Requires
It’s easy to think that our babies need to drink as much as possible to replenish the lost fluids. However, they may be vomiting and unwilling to consume even the recommended amount in one go. This reference is a standard one to follow for oral rehydration salts dosage:
If the child is under 2 years of age, after each loose motion they need to be given a quarter to half of a 200ml cup of ORS. That is 50- 100ml of ORS.
If the child is over 2 years old, they will need half to one 250ml cup of ORS after every loose motion.
What to Do if Oral Rehydration Salt is Not Available
If ORS is unavailable at the chemist or you do not have any ingredients at hand, rush your child to the paediatrician or the hospital. Dehydration in infants can be fatal, so act quickly.
How to Prepare ORS Solution at Home
A simple ORS solution can be made at home with the following procedure:
Ingredients:
Six (6) level teaspoons of sugar
Half (1/2) level teaspoon of salt
1 litre of clean drinking water or boiled and cooled water
How to Make:
Add the sugar and salt to a bowl and pour the water into it. Mix until it has fully dissolved. You can also add a little bit of mashed banana for some extra potassium. It is imperative that you get the proportions right. Adding too much salt or sugar can render it ineffective or worsen diarrhoea.
When Oral Rehydration Salts Start Working
The oral rehydration salts will show their effect immediately and dehydration normally gets better in three to four hours.
What if Your Child Vomits (Sick)
When your baby has a stomach bug, vomiting, and diarrhoea often come together. When they are losing fluids through loose stools and vomiting, prepare a good amount of ORS solution. Give it to them in small quantities often, such as 10 to 20 ml every 5 to 10 minutes. A large portion of drinks can cause them to feel sick and throw up again. It is important to give them the full amount over longer time. Also, keep in mind:
If the child gets sick and throws up within 30 minutes of consuming ORS, give it to them again.
If the child throws up after 30 minutes of consuming ORS, they don’t need any more until you notice that they have runny stools.
Your child won’t be harmed by drinking an excess amount of ORS. So if you are unsure of the amount your child has retained because they throw up often, it’s better to give them the full amount gradually.
What if You Forget to Give This Medicine to Your Infant?
If you forget to give them their dose, give another one as soon as you remember.
What if You Give Too Much of ORS to Your Baby?
Extra doses of oral rehydration solution won’t cause your child any harm even if you give it without knowing.
Are There Any Side Effects of ORS Solution?
Oral rehydration salts have no side effects. If anything worries you, call your doctor immediately. Also, remember if you’ve mixed ORS in water, but not used it for over an hour, you need to discard it. It can, however, be stored in a refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Can You Give Other Medicines Along With This Medicine?
Yes, other medicines can be given along with oral rehydration salts as long as they conform to these points:
Unless your doctor has specified not to, you can give your children medications that have ibuprofen or paracetamol.
You must inform your doctor about any allergic reactions your child might have had to any medicines that were given to them before. If you forgot to tell the doctor, check with them or with the pharmacist before giving your child ORS.
If you’re considering switching medicines or going for complementary or herbal medicines, discuss this with a doctor or pharmacist first.
More About ORS
If the child is unable to retain any fluids given to him and is showing signs of dehydration, contact the doctor straight away.
If the child is not willing to take the oral rehydration solution, then try giving him water or a diluted juice. Water should be boiled and cooled for younger babies less than a year old. Inform your doctor if they are refusing fluids completely.
During the first 24 hours of having diarrhoea, it’s recommended that babies not have any food other than breastmilk. If the child is older, avoid giving him solid foods and milk in the first 24 hours, as they may irritate the stomach and worsen diarrhoea. If you see signs of improvement in your child, continue giving him water or diluted juice along with oral rehydration salts, each time you notice runny poop.
As diarrhoea gets better, you can start normal feeding after 24 hours. A tummy bug can cause kids to have mild diarrhoea that’s recurring for up to a month.
If you notice that your child’s diarrhoea is severe and not improving for over 48 hours, along with other signs of deterioration of his health, rush him to the hospital. Heavy loss of fluid and serious dehydration can be fatal.
Oral rehydration solution should not be used as a treatment for diarrhoea for longer than two or three days, unless your doctor has advised you so.
Never use milk or juice to mix with oral rehydration salts instead of water or add extra salt or sugar to the solution. It is designed to offer the body the right balance of water and electrolytes to help in fluid absorption by the tissues and recover from diarrhoea.
You must ensure that you use the exact amount of recommended water to prepare ORS out of the salts. Too much or too little water can change the electrolyte balance and will not work effectively.
Avoid ORS if your child has a kidney or liver condition unless your doctor advises you to use it.
Things to Consider
Wash your hands with soap or use a sanitise to clean hands before making the solution.
Contact your doctor if you’re doubtful that the medicine is working. In the meantime, continue giving the medicine as usual.
Medicines prescribed for your child are for your child only. Do not give recommend it to others. If their condition remains the same, they need to consult the doctor.
If you see that someone may have accidentally taken your medicine, contact your doctor.
Do not use medicines that have expired or have come close to their ‘best before’ date on the pack. Such medicines should be returned to the pharmacist to be disposed of properly.
From Where Can You Buy ORS?
Oral rehydration salts are available in all pharmacies in the form of packets that are inexpensive.
Where Should You Store Oral Rehydration Solution?
Store the medicines in their original containers.
Keep them somewhere safe in a cupboard out of direct sunlight, heat or high humidity.
Ensure to keep it out of the reach of children.
What are the Alternative Home Remedies for Dehydration?
There are some alternatives to ORS that have been used as home remedies by some mothers over the years. The following remedies are similar to ORS and are effective as infant rehydration solution:
Breast milk
Gruel; a diluted mixture of cereals and water
Rice water or Congee
Carrot soup
Coconut water
Remember that ORS is only meant to prevent dehydration caused by diarrhoea and vomiting. It cannot be used to treat the underlying cause. Therefore, always use it under the supervision of a doctor.

10 Tips to Lose Weight by Eating - The Clean Eating Plan
The term ‘clean eating’ is making rounds lately, but what does it mean? In simple words, clean eating means eating food that is organic and minimally processed. Clean eating is a process that involves eating as little processed food as possible, and sticking to naturally grown foods such as whole grains, leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts.
Why Is Clean Eating Beneficial?
Clean eating is extremely beneficial for maintaining good health. A lot of food we get in the market is heavily processed in factories – food such as pasta, refined sugar, store-bought yoghurt, etc. Because of the growing demand for food across the country, quantity is given importance over quality, and processed food lasts longer. Thus, most of the food we consume is laden with chemicals we shouldn’t put in our body.
Lucky for us Indians, achieving a proper clean eating plan is not a far-fetched idea because buying fresh veggies and loose grains is a part of our culture, no matter how many brands sell processed versions of it! Push aside the store-bought atta and go to your local kirana store and get loose wheat grains instead. Take the grains to your local chakki walah and get organic wheat flour to make your meals with. Clean eating is not as difficult as it sounds.
How to Lose Weight By Eating – Clean Eating Plan
Clean eating works wonders on your body and causes natural weight loss because you will automatically stop putting harmful chemicals in your body in the process. Remember that clean eating does NOT mean starving yourself – it means eating right. Knowing that is essential if you want to start the process of eating right through the clean eating plan.
Here are a few tips to abide by when starting a clean eating plan to lose weight:
1. Read Your Food Labels
This is the most important part of clean eating. Your food labels will have all the information about what the food contains in terms of calories, nutrition content, and other added preservatives. Do not stick only to reading calories because that is not as important as the other information – read the percentage of fat, components such as MSG, trans fats, and most importantly, processed sugars. Knowing how much stuff your food contains can help you eliminate the product and go for a more organic option instead.
2. Reduce Your Intake of Processed Sugar
Too much sugar in the system can slow down the process of weight loss, especially if you’re not an active person. Sugar tends to accumulate in the body as fat if not burned via exercise, causing lethargy, mood swings, anxiety and headaches if consumed in high quantities. To have a productive day, cutting down on sugar is a good idea. This is probably the most difficult part of clean eating, but the impact of cutting excess sugar from your diet will immediately show results not just on your body, but also your mind. You’ll have more energy to do things, you’ll have fewer mood swings, and you’ll be generally happier.
3. Understand the Science Behind What You’re Eating
The word ‘diet’ is thrown around loosely and carelessly. Have you ever wondered why people can’t stick to diet plans? It is because the approach behind dieting is flawed. There are very few nutritionists that are both well-informed and within one’s budget, and even then, a lot of them start with all the things you shouldn’t eat instead of telling you what and how you should eat. Clean eating is not just choosing organic food, but also understanding the science behind what you are eating.
The body requires four major things apart from vitamins and minerals – proteins, carbohydrates, fibre, and fats. Carbohydrates are required by the body to function on a daily basis – sitting, standing, breathing, walking, etc. These are also absorbed very quickly into the system, which then causes hunger. If a person increases their carbohydrate intake and does not exercise to burn off the excess, the excess converts to fats and gets stored in the body. This explains your belly and the jiggly parts of your body.
Proteins and fats on the other hand do not get absorbed into the system as quickly as carbs – their break-down process is slower and hence, they last longer in the system. Fibre is required for the clean functioning of your bowels.
We need all these things to function, and drastically cutting down on any of them is harmful. Thus, it’s important to understand what you’re eating. In order to lose weight and not struggle, reduce the proportion of carbs you eat, and slowly increase your protein, fat, and fibre intake. Make sure to eat good fats like almonds and walnuts, and not only cheeses and butters. Remember, not all carbs, fats and proteins are good for you, and educate yourself on each of these things for maximum benefits.
4. Go Local
If you want your clean eating plan to work effectively, go for local sources of produce as opposed to store-bought, pre-package stuff. As mentioned above, Indians are lucky in that department – we already have a culture of vegetable vendors and local bakers in markets who are available 24/7 and it is not going to go away, so make the most of it. Not only is the produce fresh and clean, but is also less likely to be injected with hormones or food colouring to make it ‘look’ good. Buying food from local sources is a guarantee that the food is not processed or laden with bad fats, chemicals or added sugar. Aside from that, it is much cheaper, and the money goes directly to the farmers who have toiled to grow these crops. Clean eating, thus, is not just good for your health, but also for your wallet and for the well-being of your local farmers.
5. Modify Your Favourite Meals
Clean eating isn’t as difficult as you think. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys eating out or cooking ‘unhealthy’ stuff, you can try and modify your favourite dishes to suit your new clean eating plan. You don’t have to completely give it up – you can just change it. For example, if you like eating pasta, try to avoid store-bought pasta and find a local baker who makes pasta and sells it. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can make pasta yourself! Instead of store-bought juice, go for fresh fruits and make the juice yourself. It will taste better and will be devoid of artificial flavour or added sugar. Making simple switches like brown rice from white rice and brown bread from white bread can make a world of a difference.
6. Add Colour to Your Meals
The easiest way to make sure you are eating correctly and enough is by making your meals colourful. This doesn’t mean adding food colouring, but adding more different items into what you eat during every meal – a little bit of green could be palak, a little red could be some chicken curry, a little yellow could be some dal, some brown could be brown rice – different colours will ensure that you’re eating from different food groups and not just sticking to the same two or three things.
7. Listen to Your Body, Not to Other People
Every person’s body is different, and different things suit them. Understanding your body’s needs is the prime way to get your weight down, because you won’t be blindly sticking to a diet chart. For example, when your body needs water, it sends out a signal that is the same as feeling hungry. We often mistake this signal for hunger and end up eating more than required. As a habit, before you eat, drink a glass of water and see if it makes a difference to your ‘hunger’ pangs. If it still does not, eat something.
8. Time Your Meals Right
Ignore any diet plan that tells you to skip meals, because that is dangerous for the body. Instead, opt for small, timed meals – keep munching on something every 2 hours along with your water to allow your body to get all its nutrients and stay full. Remember that the fresh produce you eat will also naturally keep you full, because it does not have any harmful preservatives or chemicals that can alter your system.
9. Check Your Progress Without Checking the Weighing Scale
We have been fed constantly that our weight determines our health status. That is far from the truth. Obviously, you would like to see the progress you are making, but the weighing scale may not be the best idea for it. Every person’s body is made differently, and your weight does not actually determine how well you are doing. For example, 1 kg of fat weighs less than 1 kg of muscle. If you are doing well with your eating and exercise, there is a chance that your fat is getting burned off, which is actually a great thing – but it may look like you’ve gained weight according to the scales because your body is turning more muscular. This can lead to sadness, obsession, and the need to give up. Instead of the weighing scale, measure your progress through other ways – are you feeling more energized lately? Can you walk up three flights of stairs without huffing and puffing? How many rounds can you run since you’ve started eating clean? If you want more accurate results, measure your body’s fat percentage – there are machines available for that. Ideally, each body has an optimum level of fat that is better not exceeded. Instead of checking your weight every week, eat clean and exercise daily for a month and measure your fat percentage. A reduced fat percentage is always a good sign – it means your body is getting healthier.
10. Have Fun with Your Food
This cannot be stressed enough. A word of advice: scratch the word ‘diet’ out of your vocabulary if you truly want to get healthy. Food is meant to be enjoyed and not seen as a punishment, so don’t hate yourself if sometimes you crave a chocolate or you just really want to have a packet of Maggi. Be kind to your body and your body will reciprocate. Conversely, start looking at fresh produce as good food too – fruits and veggies can taste as good as you make them. Make an effort to stick to a meal plan, and give yourself a cheat day to reward yourself. The only person responsible for your health is you, and how you get there is completely under your control.
Clean eating is a great idea to get healthy – it does not involve a strict regime per se, but it requires dedication which you can develop over time. It’s time to debunk the myth that eating less is the only way to lose weight – in fact, eating right is a better and more fun way to do so!

Why stop with one child? Plan for the 2nd child.
As parents we plan everything for the future of our child like schooling, career, mediclaim etc and most importantly finacial security. We never forget to pay premiums of insurance policy so that if something bad happens their child is financilly secured, "but have we ever taught about EMOTIONAL SECURITY of child"
Yes you thinking right I want to share my views on the dilemma every parents face after giving birth to first child, " Do we need 2nd child"
We get so much tired taking care of child that we feel that one child is enough for us. But I strongly feel that there should be minimum 2 children in one family. Here are the reasons why?
If parents die early whom will the child go, they will feel secured with their own siblings, as they have grown up together.
They have a full time play partner, which reduces the screen time.
It's easier for them to adjust with other kids at school. Else single living child doesn't know how to adjust with other kids at school.
They learn to share their toys and food, we pamper our child so much that we buy them everything they want by which they dont share things with others.
They never get bored and bug us, as they get busy with themselves which saves parents time. Elsen in today's world it's very difficult for parents to spare time for playing with kids.
Many things can be re-used like toys or books.
Above are just advantages, but the main thing our child will be never alone, even in our absence they will have someone to stand besides them at sad and happier times, someone called as own and not cousins.
Many of them are worried how will we support 2 child financially as they can't afford, but I belive if husband and wife both work hard and reduce little luxury, they can support 2 child.
I have 3 siblings, I have experienced it personally the fun time we had together, secrets we shared together, little fights for choclates and games and many more memories. Our mother used to get us all types of board games which we enjoyed playing together.
Plan your child's emotional security along with financial security, they will surely thank you later.

A. Yes it is the what part is that your child is kicking if you feel that there is a movement of your child whether it is a cake or slight movement also you know that your child is doing fine so there is no problem in that if the movement is less it’s completely alright

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
