When Do Babies Recognize Their Mother, Father & Other Familiar People
Your bundle of joy is finally in your arms - you're probably wondering whether or not your little one recognises you! Well, the fact of the matter is that babies are naturally drawn towards faces, and they prefer to observe human faces over other things. In the following article, we shall discuss when babies recognise their mother, father, and other familiar people.
Babies Recognise Their Mom First
A newborn baby feels more comfortable around the mother because not only is the mother’s scent and voice familiar, but the baby also sees more of her all through the day. In most cases, a baby gets to be with the mother a lot more than other members of the family, which is why babies recognise their mothers first. By the time a baby turns three months old and can distinguish between various faces, she may become wary of strangers and unknown faces. So, the question remains - do babies know their mother at birth? Well, that is still debatable, but a mother is certainly amongst the first few people that a newborn baby gets familiarised with.
When Do Babies Start to Recognise Their Fathers?
There are no studies that analyse when babies start to recognise their fathers. However, it is believed that babies do respond and recognise their father’s voice from the womb. For this very reason, many doctors highly recommended that the would-be-dads talk to their babies when in the womb. Babies are born with blurry vision, and by the time they are a few weeks old (in most cases by the time babies turn two) they are most likely to recognise both their parents' faces.
Determining When a Baby Begins to Identify People
While there is no concrete evidence that helps parents understand when their baby can begin identifying people, some research signifies that a baby can recognise a mother's face early in life as compared to other people and things, which usually takes longer. A baby can recognise her parents' faces fairly early, but it takes a couple of months or a year to get familiar with other family members and close friends. The baby may familiarise herself with family members she sees regularly quicker as compared to distant relatives who do not visit often.
What About Looks When It Comes to Recognizing People?
Just the way adults find good-looking people more attractive, babies also find beautiful people more appealing. You may find your baby staring or looking longer at faces that she may find more attractive than others. This is because babies are also fascinated by certain kinds of faces.
In a study conducted in 2017, researchers found that babies are capable of having preferences of faces they like to see even before they are born - these preferences are present right from the womb! In the study, 39 fetuses at 34 weeks gestation were observed - 2 visual stimuli representing face shapes were projected on the mother's womb, out of which one was inverted. The movement of the head of the foetus was observed using high-quality 4-D sound. It was observed that the foetus moved its head to track the projection of the face shape, but did not do so for the inverted one. This proved that the foetus did not move its head to recognise a pattern, but to the shape it found appealing!
Effects of Unfamiliar Faces
You may experience that your baby is happy and playful in your or your family's company, but behaves erratically in front of strangers. This is because your baby feels comfortable and cosy with familiar faces and is wary of unfamiliar faces. Unfamiliar faces or strangers may make your baby inquisitive and apprehensive, making her behave strangely. This does not necessarily mean she is anxious or scared, but unfamiliar faces may make your baby uncomfortable.
Things to Remember
Babies are born with the innate quality of bonding with people. Though there is no scientific evidence to prove that, it is certain that babies recognise people much quicker than they recognise places - this happens because their vision is still developing. By 3-4 months of age, a baby recognises the parents, and the vision keeps improving with each passing month. If you notice that your baby is not recognising people and places by 4 months of age, you may want to mention it to your paediatrician. It is better to bring any susceptible vision problems to your doctor’s notice at the earliest, for timely medical intervention.
If you are first-time parents, you may desperately want to know when your baby will be able to recognise you. The best thing that you can do as a parent is to have patience - by the time she is a few months old, you will see your bundle of joy smiling at you!

Top 10 Effective Home Remedies to Improve Digestion in Babies and Toddlers
Motherhood comes with its own challenges and worries and one of the most challenging things for a mother to deal with is her baby’s health. And if you're worried about indigestion in your baby or toddler, well, this article may prove to be fruitful as we shall be discussing some effective home remedies that help in improving digestion in babies and toddlers.
Home Remedies to Treat Indigestion in Babies and Toddlers
Young babies and toddlers do not have a fully developed digestion system, which makes them susceptible to digestion issues. If your baby is throwing up, has diarrhoea, constipation or other such tummy troubles, there are chances your baby may be suffering from indigestion issues. However, if you make use of any of the following home remedial measures, it may help in treating indigestion issues.
1. Warm Compression
Warm compression is a great way of getting rid of gas or bloating in babies and toddlers and it also helps in soothing and calming your little one. All you have to do it take a soft washcloth or towel and a bowl of warm water. Soak the towel in the warm water and wring to squeeze extra water. Gently place the warm towel over your baby’s belly for two to three minutes. You may do this a couple of times a day to help relieve the symptoms.
2. Burping Correctly
Your baby ingests a lot of air during breastfeeding or bottle feeding. The trapped air may lead to tummy aches, gas and bloating, which can make your baby extremely uncomfortable and uneasy. The best way to overcome this problem is to burp your baby often, especially after feeds. You can hold your baby in an upright position with your one hand supporting your baby’s back and the other supporting the neck. Alternatively, you can make your baby lie down on his tummy on your lap as you stroke his back.
3. Breast Milk
As discussed above, your baby has an immature digestive system and therefore, until six months of age, breast milk is ideal for your baby. Most doctors would suggest the newbie mommies to exclusively feed breastfeed their babies until they cross the six months threshold. When your baby feeds on breast milk, he is not only getting all the required nutrition but it is also adding immense benefits to your baby’s digestion.
4. Breastfeeding Position
Sometimes just making minor changes like feeding position may help your baby deal with acid reflux. If your baby suffers from constant or regular bouts of throwing up, chances are he may be suffering from acid reflux. You should hold your baby is an upright position while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. This may prevent the stomach’s content to get thrown back to the oesophagus. Also, holding your baby in an upright position for at least half an hour may prove to be helpful to keep the acid reflux bouts at bay.
5. Yoghurt
Yoghurt contains good bacteria and probiotics which are beneficial for your little one’s digestive health. If your baby is suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting or constipation, giving yoghurt may prove to be helpful. Take a few spoons of yoghurt and dilute it by adding a few spoons of water. Feed this to your baby a few times a day or until he feels better. However, it is not recommended to give yoghurt to a baby who is less than six months of age. We recommend that you ask your doctor before giving yoghurt to your baby.
6. Massage
Massaging is a great way of strengthening your little one’s bones and muscles; however, it is also a great way of easing any digestion-related discomfort your baby may be facing. You can take any good baby massage oil and massage around your baby’s belly button area. Keep your strokes gentle and move your hands in a clockwise direction. It is also a great way of releasing any trapped gas in your baby’s tummy. You can also massage your baby’s legs by pressing them gently against his belly.
7. Bananas
Bananas are one of the best foods that you can give your munchkin to improve his digestion. Rather, banana is one of the first solid foods that your baby may begin eating because it is super easy on your baby’s digestive tract. Being rich in fibre, bananas work well in treating constipation in babies and if your baby is suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea, then eating a banana may prove to be beneficial for your baby’s gut health. However, do not give a banana to a baby if he is less than six months old.
8. Homemade Gripe Water
You can also make gripe water at home with ginger, chamomile and fennel seeds. Most doctors may not recommend giving store-bought gripe water to your baby but homemade gripe water is certainly a safer bet. This works both for younger as well as older babies.
9. Broccoli
Broccoli is great for your little one too. This green vegetable is loaded with fibre, folate, calcium, and anti-oxidants. Broccoli helps in reducing any kind of inflammation in your baby’s gastrointestinal tract. The ample amount of fibre in it is great for battling constipation. It also helps in improving gut health, nutrient absorption and your baby’s immunity. However, do not give large amounts of broccoli to your munchkin as it may lead to bloating, gas and other such issues in babies.
10. Fennel Oil
One of the most effective essential oils in battling digestion-related issues is fennel oil. You can take a few drops of this oil and mix it in your baby’s regular massage oil or other carrier oils like coconut oil and gently rub it around your baby’s belly area. It helps in soothing the pain and discomfort related to digestive issues.
These are some age-old home remedies that help in battling indigestion issues in babies and toddlers and may work for your little one too. However, if any of these do not work or your baby’s condition deteriorates further, seek medical help.

Second Trimester Diet and Nutrition
The second trimester is also often known as the golden period of pregnancy as it marks the point where the discomforts of early pregnancy pass, and those of the third trimester have not begun yet. To make the most of this period, it is important to maintain a healthy diet which ensures adequate nutrition to you and to the growing baby.
What to Eat during the Second Trimester of Pregnancy?
The second trimester which is the period between 14th to 26th week, is when your baby grows to about 35 cms. Eating healthy food during the second trimester is as important as it was during the first. Healthy food will continue to provide the essential nutrients during this time. A nutrient-rich diet is essential for the bone and muscle formation of the baby. You should eat foods which are high on calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.
Essential Nutrition and their Sources for a Healthy Second Trimester
Your diet must have carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and plenty of water. Every meal should contain 3 portions of each food group. Your meal plan should be divided into portions in each of the meals and one snack to keep up your energy levels all day
Your diet should comprise of a combination of the following-
To ensure a steady intake of folic acid and iron you should have 5 portions of vegetables (green leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage) and fruits in a day.
You should have carbohydrates (starchy foods, wholegrain bread, cereals) with every meal.
Dairy products which are low in fat should be consumed at least 2 to 3 times in a day to ensure calcium intake.
Food types high in protein (like fish, eggs, beans) should be eaten at least twice a day.
Oily fish (once a week and not more than two times in a week) to give you enough omega 3-fatty acids which help in the development of the baby’s brain.
You should switch to healthy options in snacks and drinks (like sandwiches, yoghurts).
Meal Plan for the Second Trimester
It is important that you follow a meal plan during the second trimester of pregnancy so that your baby gets the required nutrients in the right proportion and weight gain is on track.
While making the meal plan it is important to keep those fruits and vegetables in it which are available in all seasons. In case a fruit or vegetable is not available you may replace it with any other which is available in that season and provides the same nutrients.
Sometimes a single food can be a source of multiple nutrients; hence you may find the same food recommended for one trimester for a particular nutrient and the same one recommended for another in a different trimester.
All through this time, you should keep yourself hydrated. The caffeine intake during pregnancy should be limited.
Meal Plan Sample
Breakfast
2 servings of grain, 1 serving of fruit, 1 oz of meat/beans and 1 cup milk.
Sample breakfast – 2 oz wholegrain bagel toasted and 1 teaspoon margarine and scrambled egg, 1 cup cantaloupe and 1 cup of milk (non-fat).
During pregnancy you will need between 1000-3000 mg of calcium daily with dairy in most meals.
Lunch
2 servings of grain, 1 cup green leafy vegetables, 1 cup fruit, 1 serving milk and 2 oz of meat/beans.
Sample lunch – A roast beef (2 oz) sandwich made with whole wheat bread, 1 teaspoon mayonnaise, tomato and lettuce. You may also have 1 cup baby carrots, fresh orange and 1 cup non-fat milk.
During pregnancy you will need around 27 mg of iron in a day.
Dinner
2 servings of grain and vegetables each and 3 oz of meat/beans.
Sample dinner - 3 oz. chicken grilled,1 cup brown rice, 1 cup sautéed spinach on garlic with olive oil and garden salad with 1 tablespoon of salad dressing.
During pregnancy you will need 600 mg of folate per day.
Snack
A snack should include 1 serving of grain and milk each.
Sample snack - 1 cup of whole grain, cereal along with 1 cup of non-fat milk.
Food Disinclinations and Cravings
During this time many women may experience an aversion to certain kind of foods and craving for certain foods, this may be the result of the hormonal changes which happen rapidly.
Some women may have a craving for chocolates or spicy food or some kind of comfort food.
On the other hand some women develop aversions to certain food types. Essentially, they may never want to eat these foods. An aversion can be a problem if it is for vegetables or dairy that is important for the growth of the baby. In such a situation your doctor may suggest some alternate foods to eat, or recommend food supplements, so that the lack of nutrients is sufficiently compensated.
Weight Gain during the Second Trimester
The weight gain in your second trimester will be more than your first trimester. You will gain between 1 to 2 pounds every week. The weight gained does not go to the baby alone. It adds to the breast tissue, increase in the fluid content, increase in the amniotic fluid around the baby, increase in the placenta growth and uterus muscles and extra store of fat and protein in the body.
In the second trimester nausea stops and you are in a happy place because the baby is also not big enough to on pressure on your organs. However excess weight gain can cause complications during delivery.
Foods to Avoid
The 2nd trimester pregnancy diet is important. However, it is equally important to limit the intake, and avoid certain kind of food during the 6th and 14th week of pregnancy diet.
Raw and uncooked meat should be avoided due to the risk of contamination with bacteria, salmonella and toxoplasmosis.
Fish containing high levels of mercury or other pollutants should be avoided. Mercury delays development of the brain.
Consumption of raw eggs should be avoided during pregnancy because of the exposure to salmonella.
Some types of imported soft cheese contain listeria which should be avoided.
Milk which is unpasteurized may also contain listeria which should be avoided.
Caffeine intake during pregnancy can be done in moderation.
Alcohol should be completely avoided during this time.
Vegetables and fruits which are unwashed are not safe for consumption as they may be contaminated with bacteria, such as toxoplasma, which can pose hazardous for both the mother and baby.
Along with following a healthy diet plan, it is equally essential that the quantity of food should take care of your caloric requirements. You should consult your doctor about the daily calorie intake. The aim of the diet should result in healthy weight gain. Read more

A. It is not a pre-term degree once you enter into your nine months you can deliver any time and it will be a full-time delivery so see if your gynaecologist is suggesting you something go for that because she’s monitored your pregnancy throughout these nine months so I think she would not suggest you anything wrong of going a sec for a second opinion you go for what your gynaecologist suggesting but try going ahead with a normal delivery

A. You have to take proper medications to balance your hormones and that is what is going to be helpful in a regular period cycle once your periods are regular you’ll be sure about the time when you’re on dating and that would be the right time for you to conceive so that is how you need to work upon it
