Your 40-week-old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Growing up is hard work for a baby! Every week will show a new skill he is trying to master, a new developmental phase he is going through, and a new issue he is dealing with. At 40 weeks, your baby will be preoccupied with the increasing number of teeth ready to blossom underneath his gums, and his drive to move around will increase day by day. He will also be more prone to mood swings and disturbed sleep, so this is time for proper care and nurturing.
Your 40-week-old Baby’s Development
At 40 weeks, your baby will be just about developing his personality. He may be quite social, smiling at everyone and he also may be shy, hiding his face when someone new comes along and tries to engage with him. Babies will start to assess situations before accepting someone new in their life when they are 10 months old. This can also result in quick and drastic switches of moods. They will gesture to get your attention and may even wave goodbye when you indicate that you are leaving the house. This is the age when your baby may even be able to stand alone on his own.

Your 40-week-old Baby's Developmental Milestones
Below are a few milestones you can see in the development of your 40-week-old baby:
Your baby will be able to roll back a ball you roll towards him
Your baby will be able to stand alone for a short period of time
Your baby will be comfortable saying ‘mama’ or ‘papa’
Your baby will say one or two more words other than ‘mama’ or ‘papa’
Your baby will be able to pick up small objects between his forefinger and thumb
Your baby will be able to drink on his own from a cup
Your baby will be able to respond to any one-step comment you give him, along with hand gestures like, “give that to me” with your hand stretched out.
Your baby will be able to stand alone quite well
Your baby will learn how to sit back down from a standing position. His brain will slowly work out how to do the squatting movements to get up and sit back down

Feeding
Water bottles become highly attractive for babies at 40 weeks old - because of the water in them, and because of the way they roll around. Your baby will watch you drink and try to imitate you. If he spends a lot of time around other babies, you might have to constantly retrieve sippy cups that do not belong to him from his hands. 40 weeks is a good age to introduce drinking from a cup in your baby’s life. While he will get most of his hydration from breastfeeding, using his interest in water bottles to teach him to drink from a cup will be highly useful in preparing your baby for weaning. It is always better to let your baby drink water or milk from a cup. Juice is high in sugar and can cause dental problems or obesity, so help your baby get into the habit of drinking only water and milk from his cup even after weaning. Encourage your baby to drink a cup of water with each meal, to also let him know that water can quench thirst. Keep a sippy cup around your baby all day so he can drink water whenever he wants.

Sleeping
Your 40-week-old baby will experience sleep disruption at this stage due to a lot of different and simultaneous developments. His four top teeth will grow underneath his gums and will cause him discomfort. Along with the mental and mobility development he will experience, this pain will be enough to disrupt his sleep and keep him awake at night. Since he will not be able to sleep well at night, you will see your baby be grumpier and clingy during the day. Eating solid food or sucking from the breast might start to hurt, courtesy his swollen gums, leading to more frustration. Once his teeth erupt in his mouth, only then will he experience some relief. Till then, your baby might need you to feed, hold or carry him until he can forget the discomfort and go to sleep. Babies usually cling most to their mothers during this stage and refuse to go to anyone else. So be patient and do what you can to help your baby get through this painful teething stage.

Care Tips for Your 40-week-old Baby
Here are a few ways you can take care of your 40-week-old baby:
Babies deal with separation anxiety at this age. Try not to sneak away when your baby is not paying attention. Let him see you go, wave goodbye and say you’ll be back. This will let him understand you are coming back.
If you leave your baby with a sitter, make sure that person has enough games and activities so your baby doesn't experience sadness when you are away.
If your baby looks at something, look at it too, point it out and describe it. This will teach him to ask ‘what is that’ about something, knowing that you will give him the answer.
It is common at 40 weeks for babies to wake up suddenly and pull themselves up to cruise around the crib. Gently lay your baby back down, pat him on the back and encourage him to go back to sleep.
If your baby has not had a good night’s sleep due to teething discomfort or extra energy, put him down for a long daytime nap the next day.
Encourage your baby to try out his physical abilities by giving him a lot of floor space to walk and cruise along furniture. This will develop his muscles.
Babies will be prone to falling or bumping into things when they try walking so keep a first aid kit with bandages, gauze, tweezers and ointment on hand always.
If your baby starts to act out, put him in a safe place like a playpen or crib so that he doesn’t injure himself. Avoid always resorting to picking him up.
Tests and Vaccinations
There will be a physical exam when your baby is 40 weeks old which will be done by the doctor based on the individual needs of the baby.
1. Tests
The doctor can do a blood test to determine levels of iron, haemoglobin and lead in your baby’s blood so that you can rule out any possible presence anaemia in your baby.
2. Vaccinations
The doctor will give your baby a shot of the measles vaccine and the fifth dose of oral Polio drops if your baby has been getting the dosage regularly.
Games and Activities
Here are a few games you can play with your 40-week-old baby:
1. Peekaboo
This game can help your baby get over any separation anxiety. Hiding your face and showing it again helps them know you are physically present even if they can’t see you.
2. Clap Hands
Play a game of clapping your hands and encourage your baby to as well. This can help them coordinate his hand movements.
3. Eyes, Nose and Mouth
Play a game where you ask your baby to point out where his eyes, nose and mouth are. This can help him learn the names of different body parts.
4. Dance and Sing
As your baby will be able to walk now, you can further encourage his mobility by dancing and singing alongside him.

When to Consult a Doctor
Here are times you need to consult your doctor regarding your 40-week-old infant's development:
To seek guidance on topics like your baby’s feeding, sleeping, safety and development routine over the next one month, and what 40-week-old baby milestones to expect.
Questions like what new food you can introduce to your baby, when can fish, meat, egg whites and citrus be introduced (if not already), and when you can start weaning your baby away from your breast or the bottle.
40 weeks is a challenging age for your baby, so it is important as a parent to never compare your baby with another, even if the other baby shows different developments at 40 weeks of age. Don’t let self-doubt creep in. Every baby is different.

Dry Skin During Pregnancy - Causes, Complications, and Treatment
Pregnancy is a phase when women get all the love and attention from their dear ones. Pregnancy also brings about a lot of physical and emotional changes. Most women get glowing skin because of pregnancy hormones. As a result of the fluctuating pregnancy hormones, there is an increased water retention capacity in the body, which gives women the pregnancy glow. But sometimes these very hormones can trigger skin dryness during pregnancy. Having dry skin is a normal symptom of pregnancy and should not be a cause for concern.
Is it Normal to Have Dry Skin in Pregnancy?
The fluctuating pregnancy hormones can bring about a lot of bodily changes during pregnancy and one such change may be the manifestation of dry flaky skin. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your skin lose its elasticity and moisture as it stretches and expands to accommodate the growing baby. This may lead to dry, flaky, red, and itchy skin. In some cases, the skin also starts peeling and appears scaly. It is quite normal and can be treated easily.
Most women have dry, itchy skin around the neck, face and in the stomach area. And in some cases, pregnant women may also develop cracks and deep fissures that may bleed. This mostly happens during the first three months of pregnancy.
Having dry skin is more than common during pregnancy but there is no need to panic if you have it too. It can be treated with the help of simple home remedies. It is desirable to prevent the occurrence of such a condition from the very beginning as dry skin is prone to infections. Besides, it may become a cause of inconvenience in your day to day functioning of life. And if the condition gets severe, it is suggested that you seek immediate medical attention.
When Does Skin Appear Dry During Pregnancy?
Usually, skin appears dry during the initial months of pregnancy or in the first trimester and it may remain dry up until the third trimester in some cases. The neck, hands, stomach, and face are the most commonly affected areas. But other areas like elbows, knees, and heels may also turn dry. Some pregnant women may also experience itchiness in the thighs, breasts, and arms as well.
What Causes Dry Skin During Pregnancy?
By now you know the major cause of dry skin is hormonal changes. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can rob your skin of oil and elasticity, and make it dry. But hormonal changes alone are not responsible for dry skin. A lot of factors can lead to skin dryness during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, the body requires more fluids to cope with the demands of the growing baby and there is always a risk of dehydration which can trigger skin dryness.
The pregnancy hormones during pregnancy can stimulate the oil glands to produce extra oil resulting in acne. Frequent washing of face to combat oiliness of the skin and breakouts may cause the skin to become dry.
Dry skin during pregnancy can be a result of pregnancy-related stress.
Dietary changes during pregnancy can also affect the elasticity of the skin.
Possible Complication of Skin Dryness
Dry skin is more likely to become scratchy or itchy. Scratching the skin can lead to small tears or cracks in the skin, thus making it susceptible to infections and scarring. If a pregnant woman already has a history of eczema, in such a case, dry skin can also cause an eczema outbreak. Acute and widespread dryness of the skin which does not get cured by home remedies will need professional medical evaluation and treatment.
Tips to Deal With Dry Skin During Pregnancy
The following tips can be used while dealing with dry skin:
Use mild cleansers to clean your skin rather than harsh soaps which can raid the skin of the essential oils. Always remember to pat dry your skin after washing instead of rubbing it.
Certain lotions are believed to soothe and moisturize the dry skin like calamine lotion, unscented petroleum jelly, Vitamin E oil.
You can use a homemade bathing soap made of pure coconut oil, honey, pregnancy-safe natural oils like citrus and liquid castile soap. A soap made with these ingredients can soothe the dry skin.
Home remedies for dry skin during pregnancy also include yoghurt. Yoghurt contains protein and lactic acid. It not only effectively cleanses the skin but also hydrates it. It also promotes the removal of dead skin and tightening of pores.
You can also try using milk for baths. The lactic acid in milk soothes and hydrates the dry skin. You can prepare a milk bath by mixing half a cup of baking soda, half a cup of cornstarch, and two cups of powdered milk in your bathwater.
Using a cleanser made by blending apple cider vinegar and water in 1:2 ratio can prove beneficial as it will restore the natural pH balance of the skin and thus help in treating dry skin.
If you are troubled with dry skin, refrain from wearing synthetic clothes as they trap heat which can aggravate the condition. Opt for comfortable cool, cotton fabrics. But, do not starch the cotton clothing.
Resist the temptation to scratch the dry skin no matter how itchy it feels. Scratching can cause small cuts or cracks in the skin leaving it exposed to infections.
Avoid swimming in the swimming pools when your skin is dry as the chlorinated water of the pool can further distress the dry skin.
How Can You Prevent Your Skin From Getting Dry During Pregnancy?
Prevention is better than cure so make little efforts today to avoid the big problem in future. You can prevent dry skin during pregnancy by following the listed points:
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Avoid dehydrating drinks like caffeine, tea, energy drinks, and soda. Instead, go for fresh fruit juices, ginger ale, or green tea.
Include foods with high water content in your diet like green leafy vegetables, fruits like watermelons, soups. Also, maintain a healthy and balanced diet during pregnancy to have healthy skin.
Eat fatty foods like olive oil, nuts, and avocados as they promote healthy skin.
Use hydrating face masks or mud packs once in a while as they may prove to be useful in keeping the skin soft and supple.
Keeping a healthy and active lifestyle during pregnancy by taking walks, doing light exercises can also benefit the skin in many ways.
Tackle pregnancy-related stress by practising meditation, yoga, breathing techniques, and listening to soothing music.
Before stepping out in the sun, always apply sunscreen with a good SPF on the exposed skin to protect it from the sunlight.
Always shower with lukewarm water. Using hot water can rob the skin of its natural oils. So take a bath with warm water!
Apply a hydrating lotion or nourishing body oil immediately after bathing to retain the moisture of the skin. It is better to use creams and lotions consisting of natural ingredients. Avoid perfumed and chemical moisturizers.
Use a humidifier in your room during the night - it will help maintain the moisture levels of the room.
When to Consult a Doctor
Normally, dry skin patches during pregnancy can be treated without difficulty. Usually, they are not dangerous, though they may be a source of discomfort. You may have to consult a doctor in certain situations. In the following cases, you should see a doctor -
In case you have eczema or atopic dermatitis.
If you get folliculitis, a condition where hair follicles swell and become sore or red.
If you have cellulitis, a bacterial infection.
If the dry skin cracks up or develops deep fissures that start to bleed.
If the dryness is spreading to other areas of the body particularly originating from the abdomen and then affecting the arms and legs as well which in turn become scratchy and develop red patches. This can be a result of a condition known as Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques (PUPP).
If the colour of your urine is dark and the stool is pale in colour, it may be because of a condition called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), a pregnancy-related disorder of the liver which affects the normal flow of the bile. This condition can be dangerous for the baby as it can lead to premature delivery or even stillbirth.
If you experience intense itching and dryness specifically on the palms and feet. This can be suggestive of a condition called OC (Obstetric Cholestasis).
Skin conditions like dry skin are normal symptoms of pregnancy and usually harmless. Most of these conditions get cured on their own after pregnancy. Therefore, instead of worrying focus on enjoying your pregnancy and the arrival of your bundle of joy.

Is Milk With Bovine Growth Hormone Safe For My Toddler To Drink?
All mums know that milk is a must-have food for their child. At least that's what their mum repeated to them since childhood! Hence, even though a child is fussy about drinking milk, mums constantly look out for ways by which they can feed milk to their toddlers. But after reading the eye-opener book on “What's in your milk?” by Dr Samuel Epstein, back in 2006, all doting mums surely have become extra careful with what kind and how much milk they are feeding their kids.
Bovine growth hormone, or bovine somatotropin (also called bGH, rbGH, bST, or bST), is a natural peptide hormone produced by cow's pituitary glands. The genetically modified variant is administered in cows to make them mature faster and produce more milk. Here’s the deal- many health organizations now do not propagate the use of milk with bGH in it.
Here are the main reasons for the red flag:
Since bovine growth hormone received FDA approval in 1993, some studies raise a red flag for the use of this milk:
1. Disturbing health trends
We now see rising cases of obesity, cancer and early onset puberty. Some studies link these to bovine growth hormone. They claim that it can't be absorbed by our intestines which only have receptors for human growth hormone.
2. Increased health problems in cows
Cows that are given bGH injections are more prone to health problems like lameness, reproductive trouble, and udder infections like mastitis.
3. Milk contamination, mastitis, and antibiotics
Cows given rBGH are more likely to develop mastitis, an inflammation and infection of mammary tissue. Some studies show that this leads to bacteria and potential pus in milk. Further, treating infected cows with large doses of antibiotics can cause the antibiotics to show up in the milk. These antibiotic residues can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is a serious health problem.
4. Increased IGF
Injected cows may produce a hormone called insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). A number of studies show that this increases the risk for several cancers especially colorectal, prostrate and breast cancers as it survives digestion and passes into the intestines to get absorbed by the blood.
There's another side to this discussion. There are some studies which contradict others about the harmful effects of rBST on cows. They say that the presence of a little extra IGF-1 in milk doesn't put people at any extra risk because IGF-1 does get broken down by the human digestive system. Ultimately, therefore, the decision about buying milk from such cows has to be taken from you.
Honestly, whatever you think about growth hormones in milk, it is now fairly easy to avoid them if you want. Buy milk or other dairy products like cheese, yogurt, and ice cream that are labelled as being rBST-free, or buy organic milk. One can also buy a milk alternative that is fortified with vitamin D and calcium, such as soy milk, almond milk, hemp milk, or rice milk, etc. Read more

Oral Hygiene Instructions for Infants to School-going Children
Oral Hygiene is the practice of keeping the oral cavity, which includes the teeth, gums, and tongue clean. Parents should start maintaining oral hygiene of their child within a week after birth. The best time to counsel parents regarding oral hygiene is when the mother is expecting because parents to be more receptive at the time. As a dentist, I am here with some oral hygiene instructions for all age groups of kids.
1. Infants (0-1 year old )
Clean and massage the gums with a moistened gauze piece or wet cloth after every feed.
This helps in enhancing blood circulation in the gums and promotes growth of healthy bacteria.
In some kids, the first tooth comes at six months of age, whereas for others, it may come at around one year. So, on the basis of number of teeth erupted, use of a soft toothbrush is advised.
2. Toddlers (1-3 years old )
This is the best age to introduce your child to a tooth brush, if you have not done it earlier.
Brushing should be done by the parents, as the motor skills of children in this age group are not as developed.
Brush your child's teeth only with an infant sized toothbrush with soft bristles.
Only a non-fluoride toothpaste is advisable for kids under three years of age.
3. Preschoolers (3-6 years old)
A fluoride toothpaste can be introduced to kids, once they turn three years old.
The brushing technique of the child should be properly supervised by parents, or parents must assist their children in brushing teeth.
4. School-going kids (6-12 years old )
At this age, children now possess the dexterity to brush their teeth by themselves, but initially still require monitoring and reinforcement.
A fluoride rinse and floss can also be introduced to kids in this age group
The ideal time to replace your child's tooth brush is every three months or when you see the bristles appearing worn out, whichever comes sooner. Oral hygiene practices at home from an early age is very important to prevent condition like cavities and gingivitis in kids.

11 Little Money-saving Hacks That Will Help You Save Up a Small Fortune!
Do you often shop for little things without realising the huge dent you’re carving on your bank balance? Do you fear to make eye-contact with your passbook every month-end? Do you swear to save a buck or two every time you get your paycheck, and somehow, end up overspending? If you can relate to any of these, this article is just for you!
Saving is not everybody’s cup of tea! If you’re broke by the end of the month and really want to do something about it, there’s a bunch of things you can try! And don’t worry, we’re not asking you to go to the extreme and cut your debit/credit cards. Instead, we’re offering you some money-saving hacks that will help you save a ton of money!
11 Quick & Easy Hacks to Save Money
Here’s a list of the simplest money-saving hacks that you’d wish you knew before. Read on! You can thank us later!
1. Clear your Browsing History
Imagine this: you visit site ‘x’ to book airline tickets, and the fare is Rs. 2000. You exit site ‘x’ and move to site ‘y’ to compare the prices. Site ‘y’ quotes Rs. 2,400. So you come back to site ‘x’ to make a transaction, and you see that the original fare of Rs 2000 has gone up to Rs. 2500 in just a matter of minutes. Cursing your luck, aren’t you? Well, it’s not bad luck. It is, in fact, an excellent trick adopted by most sites to push buyers to make a transaction by inducing the fear of having to pay extra later. What you need to know is that as soon as you exit site ‘x,’ its crawler starts following you. It comes along with you to site ‘y’ and decodes that you’re interested in purchasing an air ticket. So when you came back to site ‘x,’ you can see an increased price, leading you to believe that if you leave now, you might have to pay extra the next time you visit. Genius, right? An easy way around this loot is clearing your browsing history immediately after exiting site ‘x.’ This way, the site will think of you as a new visitor every time you visit, quoting its minimum fee! Ka-ching!
2. Delete your Card Information from Sites
This hack is linked directly to the buyers’ psychology. We often order food, clothes or knick-knacks online, and most of us have saved our card information to make our transactions easier. What we don’t realise is that just because it’s an easy way to pay, we’re spending more than we should. Every time you make an online transaction, make it a point to delete your card information immediately. So when you’re tempted to shop the next time, your brain might not want to go through the effort of adding all the information again, and you’ll end up abandoning your cart, simply out of laziness! And if not laziness, you’ll give a thought to whether the product is worth all the effort.
3. Pay in Cash
This is not just a hack – it’s a habit that you must stick to, irrespective of whether you’re shopping online or offline. When you use your card to make a payment, the amount looks merely like a number to you. But when you pay in cash, you realise the amount of money that’s slipping out of your hand. The next time you visit a grocery store or go shopping for that matter, do yourself a favour and make a list of the things you need. Based on that list, chalk out a budget and carry that much cash. Leave your card at home so that you shop consciously, and you’re not tempted to go out of budget. Also, when you carry cash instead of your card, you’re likely to spend less. Isn’t that what you’re looking for?
4. Consider Potluck Parties Instead of Going Out
Eating and drinking at fancy restaurants is okay once in a while. But if you’re a social person, going out too often and spending every time can be the reason why you’re unable to save money. If you’re looking at maintaining your social life and saving some money side-by-side, you should consider hosting potluck parties. Potluck parties can really be fun, especially in the case of large groups. Host it at your place and prepare one main dish. Ask the others to prepare either a side dish or an appetizer. One could bring a bottle of wine, and one can make an easy dessert. Not only is this cost-effective, but you also get to eat a variety of food in a comfortable environment. To take it up a notch, you could rent and watch a movie, play some music or host some games to keep the fun alive.
5. Switch to Prepaid SIM Cards
By using postpaid SIM cards, you’re giving yourself the liberty to spend as much money as you want for an entire month, and when the bill arrives, you have no choice but to pay! You can save quite some money here. It’s simple - switch to prepaid SIM cards. All you have to do is select a pack in advance, pay the amount (which is always lower than postpaid data packs), and use just that data for the entire month. Various service providers have these amazing monthly data packs that will cost you far less than what you would otherwise spend
6. Get Savvy With Coupons
We often get these vouchers and coupons along with daily newspapers and magazines. Most of us take one good look at the coupon and throw it out. Well, that’s like throwing away money. The hack here is to save these coupons; rather, collect them. These coupons often have a validity of 3 months or so. It is mostly restaurants, salons, and local stores that send these coupons to advertise their products. Save them and make it a point to use them in time. The other way to get coupons is by signing up for the rewards program of stores. If you have shopped at a store once and filled in your contact number or email-id while paying, you’re already a part of their rewards program. Keep an eye on the offers these stores come up with, especially during your birthday month.
7. Purchase Electronics at the Right Time
Keep this in mind, especially when purchasing electronics or other durable goods – every store has its monthly targets. The salespeople in these stores have a set number of products that they have to sell each month. If you enter these stores towards the end of the month, you’re more likely to get huge discounts because the salesperson is mainly looking to shoot up his numbers for that month. You need only ask for it! Wait, there’s more! Every salesperson holds a unique code that’s called an “Employee Discount.” It basically means that every salesperson, irrespective of whether he is working in a shoe store or an appliance store, holds the authority to offer a minimum discount (valid even when no offers are running.) Ranging anywhere between 10% - 35%, you need only ask (or push) the person to use his code on your purchase.
8. Lower the Brightness of Screens
This is a necessary hack to reduce your electricity consumption. When you purchase a television set or a computer, make it a point to reduce its brightness before getting it installed at home. Do the same with the existing screens at home. When these models are on display in stores, their brightness levels are intentionally set high to make them look attractive. But such high levels of brightness can shoot up your electricity bills. By lowering the screen brightness, you can cut down upto 40% of your electricity consumption, thereby saving you quite some money on your bills!
9. Grow your Herbs
Herbs like basil, coriander, mint and curry leaves are used in most dishes almost every day. Even though these herbs are readily available with local vegetable vendors, you end up spending quite some money to purchase these greens nearly every week. The easier way around is growing these herbs yourself. Purchase either seeds or small plants and shift them into bigger pots at home. They are fast-growing plants that survive can every weather, and if you take good care of them, you might not have to spend money on purchasing herbs for the next decade. Think about it! Why stop at herbs? You can grow vegetables like potatoes, onions, chillies, and cucumber too! Besides, kitchen gardens are easy to maintain, and you can be assured of the fact that what you’re eating is organically grown.
10. Paint your Roof/Building in Light Shades
Who thought that basic science could save you some bucks? Here’s how! Heat tends to penetrate the walls of the house, especially if you have dark walls/roof, thus increasing the temperature of the house. To stop grilling in a hothouse, you’re more likely to fire up the air conditioning and switch on all the fans. The solution is simple. If you’re a homeowner, paint the roof and walls of your house white. Lighter shades naturally absorb less heat and keep your house cool. Painting the house might not seem like it’s worth the investment now, but in the long run, you will end up using less electricity than before!
11. Sell your Rubbish for Cash
Ever clean your closet and end up with a pile of unwanted clothes? Most Indian households prefer to use old clothes as rags, but if those clothes are good enough to be reused, why not sell them? Various online and offline stores accept not just old clothes, but also shoes, school uniforms, plastic material and even old furniture for cash. Instead of throwing out what you think is waste, look for things that can be resold. Various local vendors give out cash for old plastic or glass bottles. Just like you can sell your newspapers, you can sell other recyclable material too!
It’s true that hard earned money can vanish in the blink of an eye. This is exactly why we’ve come up with this list of easy, money-saving hacks that will help you save up a small fortune. Try these hacks and collect the money in a box - money that you’d otherwise spend. You’ll see for yourself the amount you can save by doing things a little differently! Spend consciously!
