Baby Crowning
It says that becoming a mother completes a woman. Giving birth to a child is a divine experience, after all, you have the power to give bring life into this world and that should make you feel special. Your body starts preparing for this many days before you go into labour.
Video: Baby Crowning During Birth - Everything You Need to Know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0hkzsU_N3k
What is Baby Crowning?
During labour, along with each contraction, the head of your baby starts appearing through your vaginal opening. One of such contractions tightens and relaxes the uterine muscles that help the baby to come out through the birth canal. This is the time when you need to start pushing. This will make the baby’s head reach the opening faster. However, when the contraction is over, the head will disappear.
Crowning is the moment when your baby’s head is almost fully outside without slipping back inside. The cervix effaces 100% and dilates 10 cm before crowning.
So, if you have wanted to know what does crowning mean in pregnancy, this is exactly what it is.
What is the Duration of Baby Crowning?
The crowning process can last for a couple of hours if this is your first delivery. The duration will go down with subsequent deliveries.
Stages of Labour
Your body starts preparing for the event weeks before the first day of labour. Your baby’s head moves into your pelvis and this is known as engagement.
There are several stages of labour. It starts with contractions and ends with the transition. The most intense stage of labour is the very first stage. However, it is also the shortest.
The ‘active labour’ stage follows next. The contractions are longer and more intense, and your cervix dilates rapidly. Also known as the pushing phase, this stage can coincide with your cervix being completely dilated. This is when crowning in labour starts.
How Is Baby Crowning Performed?
Natural childbirth is a painful process and the only way to get relief from the pain is by delivering your baby. Here are some effective tips that you can keep in mind to manage the pain when giving birth and crowning:
Find your Best Position
The ‘best’ position for one woman might be different from another. Some of the effective ones are:
Side-lying position
is best if you want a controlled and slow childbirth.
Squatting position
is the best when you have a large baby or you have a quick labour.
All Fours Position
is also recommended in the case of a large baby or if your baby is in the posterior position.
Pushing and Breathing
During birth crowning, you will experience an urge to push and this is natural. Your uterus contracts and sends you signals to push the baby out.
It is important to remember that this pushing is not same as pushing your abdominal muscles to relieve yourself. You do not have to bear down while holding your breath, your baby will not get sufficient oxygen if you are doing this. You must push and breathe in a such a way that your baby comes down slowly through the birth canal, in a controlled fashion. This will be comfortable for you and you can conserve your energy as well. The risk of damaging the perineum also reduces.
Keep your mouth open with your neck and jaw relaxed during pushing birth crowning. Learn the art to exhale properly. During labour, put your hands under your breasts, on your abdomen and these muscles should tighten.
Tips for Fighting the Urge to Push
Keep the muscles between your vagina and rectum relaxed by leaning back.
Relax, breathe, and ask your midwife to give you a massage.
Deep breathing exercises will help your body to relax.
Do not fight off the contractions. Use them to make the delivery easy.
How Does it Feel When Your Baby is Crowning?
The feeling is referred to as the ‘ring of fire’. Your vaginal tissues get stretched as your baby’s head becomes visible and this leads to a burning sensation. It stays till the baby’s head slips inside.
Stop pushing the moment you feel this burning sensation. This will prevent your tissues from getting damaged. The first stage of labour comes to an end with the end of the burning sensation.
This burning sensation does not last for a long time but makes you feel numb. The stretching of your baby blocks vaginal tissue, leading to the numbness.
How to Prepare for Natural Birth Crowning
During the ring of fire, the midwife will massage your perineum to reduce the burning and risk of tears. Episiotomy might be recommended for a smooth labour.
A lubricating finger is inserted to massage the perineum for 10 minutes and this can start from the 35th week of pregnancy.
Preventing Tears
Eat healthily and make sure you work out on a regular basis so that your muscles are strong enough to withstand the pressure.
Lubricating the area with oil can help the baby come out easily without stretching your muscles too much.
Lie on your side and push as this will reduce the pressure on your perineum.
Push slowly but firmly and do that while taking long breaths.
Water birth is also effective in preventing tears.
How Can You Relieve the Baby Crowning Pain?
Ask the midwife or your partner to hold a piece of flannel against the muscles present between the rectum and vagina (perineum). This will reduce the chances of any tear and painful birth crowning.
You can also try a warm compress to reduce the pain.
Massaging warm oil on the skin will make it soft and allow for more stretching.
What Happens After Baby Birth Crowning?
During crowning, the doctor will be able to point out if your umbilical cord is wrapped around your baby’s neck or if there is any other kind of obstacle. If your baby gets stuck in the canal, the doctor will manually deliver the baby.
The baby’s complete head emerges after crowning and then the rest of the body.
Conclusion
Crowning is a crucial part of the delivery process known as the pushing phase. It is an indication that the baby is on its way out. Though painful, it is a manageable pain. Apart from the numerous remedies involved, the body has its own internal mechanisms to handle the pain.

Amazing Duck Facts and Information for Kids
Ducks are interesting birds; they can fly in the air, waddle on land and they can swim in water; there aren’t many animals that can do all that. Closely related to geese and swans, these birds are smaller with shorter necks. In popular culture, ducks are yellow with their well-known “quack!” sounds; in reality, ducks are varied in the colour of their feathers and the sounds they make.
Duck Information for Kids
Here are some essential duck facts for preschoolers:
1. Ducks Have a Cosmopolitan Distribution
What this means is that ducks are present almost everywhere on Earth! Most ducks occupy the major continents in both the northern and southern hemisphere. Some duck species from the Northern Arctic hemisphere and in the temperate regions are migratory; they fly to warmer places in the breeding seasons to lay eggs. Ducks in the tropics are not migratory in general. In dry places such as Australia where rainfall can be unpredictable, they seek out temporary pools that form after heavy rains. Some species of ducks are also found in sub-Antarctic islands such as the Auckland Islands and South Georgia. Some have managed to colonise islands such as Hawaii and New Zealand.
2. Ducks Have Varied Feeding Methods
Ducks are omnivores; they feed on a number of food sources such as aquatic plants, grasses, insects, fish, worms, small amphibians and small molluscs. The dabbling ducks feed on land or shallow water where they up-end without completely submerging to reach for anything they can grab with their beaks. Their beaks have a specialized comb-like feature called pectin along the edge. The pectin traps food and grip slippery prey and is highly useful for preening their feathers.
Diving ducks in both freshwater and sea are able to submerge easily to catch prey deeper in the water. They are also built heavier for the purpose and hence have a slight disadvantage when it comes to flying. A few species are specialized to catch and swallow large fish. Many other fresh water species have beaks adapted for dredging at the bottom of lakes and pond looking for worms, molluscs, waterweed and insect larva.
It’s important to note that while ducks eat the bread crumbs people commonly give them, it is not their natural food and damages their health.
3. Ducks Have Many Predators
Being birds, they have many predators. The ducklings are especially vulnerable because of their inability to fly, making them easy prey for animals such as feral cats, dogs, large fishes, crocodiles, snakes and herons. Their nests are also raided by many predatory animals on land, and brooding females are sometimes caught by surprise by cats, foxes, eagles and owls. The adult ducks, despite being good fliers, are also sometimes caught by crocodiles and large fish. In the air, they can be attacked by falcons and hawks. Other than their natural predators, hunters are also a threat to ducks.
4. Duck Reproduction
Female ducks build nests in the breeding grounds where they hatch as well. The nests are built with twigs, reeds, grass or holes in trees. The male ducks attract the females with their colourful feathers, and the females lead them to their nests. Males also guard their nests against other pairs that might try to take over. Females lay 5-12 eggs at a time and sit on them to keep them warm while the males are away with other males. Ducks’ eggs take about a month to hatch, and the mother protects the ducklings while they are vulnerable. They are able to fly in 5 to 8 weeks time.
Other Amazing Facts about Duck for Children
Here are some amazing facts about ducks that are sure to surprise kids:
The Mallard Duck is the most commonly found duck species in Asia, Europe and North America. They are dabbling ducks and are often found in ponds, lakes and rivers. One interesting mallard duck facts for kids is that most of the domesticated ducks have descended from either the mallard duck or the Muscovy duck.
Ducks have webbed feet designed for swimming; they are well suited for water acting like paddles and even lack nerves or blood vessels, allowing them to be used in freezing waters. They are however not very useful for walking, hence the characteristic waddle of ducks.
The male ducks are more colourful than females, and that is how they attract their mates. The females usually have dull feathers of colours that match their surrounding for camouflage. They are vulnerable to predators while incubating their eggs. Hence, they lack colourful feathers that stand out.
Ducks have waterproof feathers, keeping them light and warm all the time. An oil gland located near the tail produces oil that spreads over the feathers to repel water. Underneath the waterproof feathers are fluffy feathers that keep the ducks warm.
Ducklings are quite independent and are ready to leave their nests from the time they are born. They are born with their eyes open and are not entirely dependent on their parents for food. They are able to fly in 5 to 8 weeks to escape from predators.
Ducks keep themselves clean by preening themselves with their beaks. Their necks are flexible enough to reach most parts of their body to preen their feathers and keep them clean of dirt, trapped water droplets, and parasites.
Although “quacks” are the sounds commonly associated with ducks, most species of ducks do not quack at all. Their calls are varied and consist of grunts, whistles, yodels and cooing. Also, males are most often quiet.
While rubber ducks from toy stores are mostly yellow, you won’t find banana yellow ducks in the wild. Neither the adults nor the ducklings are yellow. Instead, males typically have green heads and greyish body while females are a dull brown.
Ducks are highly alert and sleep with half of their brains awake. Those that sleep at the edge of the sleeping groups often sleep with one eye open. They can detect predators with a fraction of a second and escape.
It’s a common misconception that touching a duckling makes its mother abandon it. However, it’s best not to touch them when you come across a brood. You risk scaring the mother away and injuring the ducklings, or you risk being attacked by the mother.
Ducks are interesting birds; they have evolved some amazing ways to keep themselves well adapted to living around water bodies. They are fun and adorable creatures, whether wild or domesticated.

Tell Your Kids The Chhath Puja Story
Come November and it's time for one festival after another! A few days after Diwali is time for Chhath Puja, or one of the biggest festivals of Bihar. If you're observing Chhath or are curious about why Chhath Puja is celebrated, here's a complete story to share with your kids. After all, nothing like our festivals to introduce them to mythology!
Chhath Puja involves worshiping and thanking the Sun God over a period of four days. This is generally accompanied by fasting, as a symbol of respect and gratitude to the Sun - the one whose warmth lets us survive on Earth. This year Chhath Puja falls on November 17 so this is the best time to start learning about it!
How To Celebrate Chhath Puja
During the festival, devotees pray at the riverbank during sunrise and sunset. If your kids say “Why Mamma?”, tell them this: The solar energy has the lowest level of ultraviolet radiations during this time! It's thus the best time to soak in some sun. During the Puja, the Chhathi Maiya Goddess is worshipped. She is believed to be the consort of Surya.
On the first day is “nahai khai” or taking a dip in the Ganges. The recipe of the day is usually pumpkin curry, rice and channa dal.
On the next day, “kharna” is observed and kheer, chappatis and fruits constitute the main meals.
The third day is called “pehla argha”. Today is particularly tough for those observing a fast as they completely abstain from eating anything on this day.
On the final day is “doosra argha” when devotees break their fast and eat kheer, sweets, thekua and fruits. This is the traditional “Chhath prasad” and there's lots of rice, wheat, coconut and ghee that goes into its recipe!
The importance of Chhath Puja also lies in the celebration of the new harvest. Goes without saying, no Sun God, no harvest either! Now that you are all armed with information about Chhath Puja, explain the festivities to your children. Let them help you with arranging for the prasad, setting up the pandal and preparing the materials for the Puja. When sunrise and sunset arrives, you two can pray to the Sun God together and wish for millions of sunlit, beautiful days together! Read more

Winter Diarrhoea - A Common Problem during Winter and our Experience
Its January and winter is at its peak. Winters are the most difficult time for babies. Baby care during winters is challenging. It's the time when your baby may catch infections or may just suffer due to temperature extremities. Winter diarrhoea is one common problem babies may face during winters.
Our Experience
A few days ago, we went out early morning with our five-month-old. We came back 5 hours later and the baby started passing greenish loose stools. First, she did it three times. The frequency increased to 10-12 times from next day. The baby was otherwise fine and well fed. We consulted our paediatrician and he diagnosed it to be winter diarrhoea. He suggested a probiotic for 5 days, a zinc solution for 14 days and ORS. He further suggested keeping the baby hydrated. It took her 10 days to get well.
Is It Serious?
Winter diarrhoea is not a life-threatening condition but still very uncomfortable for babies. So, the following conditions should not be ignored:
If the baby is not active enough
If the baby is not passing urine (at least 6 times a day)
If the stool is too smelly or has blood in it
If the baby is not taking feed properly
If you observe any of the above symptoms, do consult your paediatrician as soon as possible.
What We Learnt from the Experience
The most important thing in winters is to keep your baby hydrated.
Keep your baby warm enough and cover their palms with gloves or mittens while going outside, as babies take their fingers in their mouth which can cause infection.
Allow your baby to rest well.
Postpone any scheduled vaccination when your baby is not well.
Do not ignore any symptom which is not normal for your baby as every baby is different.
Happy winters
