Is Diarrhoea a Symptom of Teething?
On seeing your baby's first tooth, you will be overjoyed. But teething can be an uncomfortable experience for a baby, especially when he is unable to convey his pain to you. There are many symptoms of teething in babies and diarrhoea is one of them. If your baby is teething and is suffering from diarrhoea, read to know what you can do.
Why Do Babies Get Diarrhoea While Teething
The connection of teething with diarrhoea has been established as many parents noticed it in their children. However, there is no evidence justifying that teething and diarrhoea are connected. An increase in drooling while teething was also thought to be a cause of diarrhoea while teething. Saliva production in the mouth is more during teething and babies may swallow a lot of saliva during this stage, which may disturb the balance of the gastric system, causing diarrhoea to manifest within. However, even this cannot be taken as the exact cause of diarrhoea in babies.
What is strongly believed today is that both these activities are connected but indirectly, making them almost coincidental but not strange. Teething is a difficult period for an infant. The constant irritation in the gums causes them to reach out for different objects, which are then held in the mouth and chewed. These objects may not necessarily be clean and could have germs and other microbes on them. Since babies tend to put everything they can find in their mouth, the chances of bacteria entering the body are extremely high, and hence they may get diarrhoea. A baby's immune system is also not fully developed and hence his body may not fight bacteria and infections, and as a result, he may get diarrhoea.
While this explanation might be satisfactory, it poses a grave danger for the child. The early years of a baby are usually filled with instances where infections keep occurring all the time. Be it intestinal infections or ear infections, a child is constantly battling them until the immune system becomes strong enough to wade them off. The diarrhoea that emerges during teething could, in fact, camouflage the symptoms of the actual infection. Loose motions might be attributed to poor hygiene practice and would be disregarded as a normal occurrence when, in fact, it could indicate the presence of a stronger infection thriving within that needs immediate medical attention.
How Long Does Teething Diarrhoea Last?
If the diarrhoea manifests primarily when the teething behaviour sets in for the child, the symptoms should usually go away in a few days once the right precautions are taken. However, if the problem continues for around a week or more and tends to repeat every month, you may need to take your child for a medical examination.
Tips To Deal With Teething Diarrhoea In Infants
Diarrhoea that occurs when your child is undergoing teething is quite discomforting, but it does not call for any particular treatment. However, you may need to intervene immediately if the little one has diarrhoea for more than a few days and passes loose stools nearly 5-6 times in a single day. Here is what you can do if your baby has diarrhoea:
1. Talk To Your Doctor
The consistent presence of teething diarrhoea should be brought to your doctor’s attention as soon as possible. This helps in diagnosing the presence of any other infections that might be causing similar symptoms, and corrective action can be taken accordingly. At times, certain medication might also be recommended to counter the condition or the bacteria, too. Talking to your doctor is highly recommended as diarrhoea can dehydrate your infant.
2. Maintain Hygiene
The process of teething causes immense irritation to the gums of the baby. While most babies cry due to it, others attempt to calm themselves down by biting down the gums or chewing on any hard objects they can lay their hands on. These could be toys or even other items specifically bought to counter his teething issues. If these are not kept clean and sanitized regularly, it can be an open invitation for numerous microbes to enter his body, which can cause infections to thrive within and worsen his health.
3. Adjust the Diet of Your Child
If your child is experiencing diarrhoea as a result of teething, an adjustment to his diet could provide some important benefits to his body. Start by increasing the frequency of breastfeeding or formula milk. Give him enough fluids to keep his body hydrated. You can also feed him purees of vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and bananas. Rice water can also be given. All of these foods can keep the diarrhoea under control. Also, If you give cow milk or juices to your child, stop it temporarily until the diarrhoea is relieved.
With the above-mentioned tips, you can prevent diarrhoea from occurring in the first place. Teething is a natural process of the child’s development and diarrhoea is one of its symptoms. But, worry not as your baby will be fine in a few days. However, if the problem persists for long, feel free to consult a doctor!

Tests and Vaccinations
If you are thinking about vaccinations and test, you have to reach out to your doctor and make sure that you are updated with all the information regarding vaccinations. By now most parents would have already gotten most of the prescribed vaccinations. In fact, by the 18th week of the baby, a lot is done.
However, you can take a check to figure out if you are on the right path. Some of the tests you would have taken over the last few months are MMR:(measles, mumps, and rubella), Hepatitis A and MMR (Booster Dose). Just make sure to stay updated on your vaccinations and tests with your doctor. During the period of vaccinations, your child might be down with a fever. This is seen in many children; however, it is good to consult your doctor if you think your baby is struggling too much.
Games and Activities
By now your little wonder will want to start playing and having a good time. It is important to allow your child to spend time playing at this stage. During these days, you will be surprised to see how creative and playful your little one truly is. Some of the things you can give your little bay are paper, big blocks, and toys that aren’t too small. Make sure that your little one can hold it easily and at the same time it shouldn’t be too small as they can choke on it. One thing you can do while your baby is playing is making sure you are around, or an elder is around just to help out and make sure she is not diving into anything dangerous.
You must not deny your little one the freedom to play around and roll around. This is the stage when she starts to enjoy doing things on her own so allow her to identify things she likes and let her be as creative with her games and activities.

When to Consult a Doctor
When you have a little baby, there are chances of visiting the doctor quite a few times. Even if the baby is healthy, you cannot avoid the cuts and bruises that come by. All babies are prone to falling sick faster than adults as their bodies are still developing. Some of the things that you need to watch out for are allergic reactions. Babies can allergic too, and you might not even know. So just make sure to test new food on your baby before feeding her with it. When your little one is running a temperature, you need to meet the doctor soon. At times, you can find rashes and skin allergies, and you aren’t sure how that happened. Well before giving your child medicines, please make sure to consult with the doctor. A few other things that you need to watch out for are diarrhoea, infections, breathing problems and any other unusual behaviours in your little one.
When your baby is 20 weeks old, there are quite a few things that you will start noticing. On one side you will be so happy to notice how far you have come. Just 20 weeks ago, you were trying so hard to get your little one out into the world, and now you are watching her laugh, play, cry and even make you angry. This development is a huge milestone for you and your baby. So make sure to celebrate your success as a parent. Also, it is the time when your child is slowly developing and adapting to patterns and routines around you. Make sure to protect and safeguard your child, but at the same time give her a little space to play around.

Mumma Loves the Baby, She Doesn't Love Me Anymore
Hi, I am V. I am the apple of my Mummy's eye. My Mumma is the most beautiful Mumma in the whole wide world. She loves me a lot. We play together, laugh together, we go to birthday parties and the park together. But nowadays, Mumma is getting fat and tired. She says, "Soon we are going to have a new baby in our home who will play with you and love you." I am really excited. I will have a new friend to play with.
Mumma went to the hospital today. I miss Mumma. Hospital is such a boring place, nothing to do and everyone says, "Keep quiet and sit in one place." This is nothing like the mall. I wish Mumma and I could go to the play zone in the mall.
Oh, it's time to meet Mumma. I missed her so much. I want to hug and cuddle with Mumma but everyone says, "Don't trouble Mummy." They don't know we always cuddle at home.
I met the new baby today. The baby is cute but just keeps sleeping. Mumma finally came back home with the new baby. I want to hold the baby but Mumma says I can't. Mumma keeps telling me not to touch the baby. I want to play with the baby but the baby doesn't do much. The baby just keeps crying and sleeping and does potty in the diaper, eewww.
Mumma doesn't play as much with me anymore whereas the baby keeps cuddling with her all the time. I feel Mumma gives all her attention to the baby.
Has she forgotten me? Doesn't she love me anymore?
To gain Mumma's attention and to make her love me again, I did my homework today, all by myself. I called Mumma to see my effort but she got really angry. She was upset I wrote on the wall.
Mumma is always happy when I recite a poem and dance. Maybe if I do that now, she would love me again, but this time when I started singing, the baby woke up and started crying and Mumma got angry. Mumma only loves the baby, she doesn't love me anymore.
Today Mumma told me that I am big now and should eat by myself. But she keeps feeding the baby all day and says the baby is small. I think Mumma only loves the baby, she doesn't love me anymore.
Mumma says I am big, I should sleep in my room now. The room has my favourite cartoon bedsheets and awesome cartoon stickers on the walls and all my toys are in this room now but I don't want to sleep alone in a different room. I want to snuggle with Mumma and sleep. The baby sleeps close to Mumma, why can't I sleep anymore? Maybe Mumma loves the baby, she doesn't love me anymore.
Mumma made my favourite food and dessert today too. We played together and she hugged and kissed me like before. We made funny faces and the baby laughed too. Today Mumma slept in the middle with the baby and me on two sides. Mumma read us a bedtime story, I hugged Mumma. She kissed me and said, "I love you." I felt happy and dozed off. My Mumma loves the baby but she loves me more.
