20 Must Know Facts About Space for Kids
Space - a term that is shrouded in mystery and one that contains many marvels of the universe. There are way more than billions of galaxies in space and just imagining the far corners of the universe is an incomprehensible feat for the human brain!
In this article, we've gathered a list of 20 interesting facts about space for kids which, hopefully, will serve as a starter guide to the wonders of space. Read on and enjoy.
Fun Facts and Information About Space for Children
Ever wondered about the Sun, stars, moon or asteroids and felt that it never made sense? Fret not, we've got you covered. Here are 20 interesting facts about space for kids which will leave you mesmerized by the mysteries and wonders of the universe.
1. Asteroids
An asteroid speeds down into the Earth's stratosphere every year, but luckily, it burns up to smithereens before it reaches the atmosphere. Lucky for us! Here's another fun fact about asteroids- the first asteroid was discovered in 1801 by an Italian Mathematician and Astronomer called Giuseppe Piazza. The asteroid was known as 'Ceres.' Most asteroids are composed of rocks and metals.
2. Tire Tracks on The Moon
There are tire tracks and signs of mankind's footsteps on the Moon. The reason for this is because no winds blow on the moon.
3. The Sun
It takes more than a million Earth-sized planets to fill up the sun! Not just that but the sun is considered approximately 300000 times larger than the earth and is 14.9 billion km away! It has been forecasted that there will come a day when the Earth will be consumed by the sun.
4. Manmade Objects in Space
The first manmade object to enter space was launched by a Russian satellite named Sputnik back in 1957! 'Sputnik 2' was launched by the USSR on November 3, 1957, and a homeless dog named 'Laika' was launched along with it. Laika was the first dog to enter space but passed away unfortunately since the satellite couldn't make it back to Earth.
5. Why The Moon Glows and Tracks Us
It's a fascinating fact indeed that the sun's rays bounce off of the Moon's surface which later is passed on to the Earth, thus making it appear as if the moon is glowing. What makes this even more fascinating? It takes only 1.25 seconds for the moon to do just that!
Additionally, since we move a very small distance on the Earth, it appears as if the moon is following us.
6. Spaghettification
Do you love spaghetti? Well, that's what any human will turn into once he lands inside a black hole in space. 'Spaghettification,' is when you're literally, we quote, "pulled and ripped apart" by gravitational forces when landing inside a black hole. This makes it impossible for lifeforms to survive in black holes.
7. Day And Night
The Earth rotates on an invisible axis and orbits around the sun just like the other seven planets in the Solar System. Day and night occur depending on which side of the earth faces the sun. The Earth takes 24 hours to make one complete rotation which leads to days and nights on our planet.
8. There Are Eight Planets
Previously, Pluto used to be considered a planet just like the rest of the remaining ones in our solar system. Pluto wasn't large enough to be considered a planet and hence, was dubbed, as a 'dwarf planet.' This is why there are eight planets in the solar system and not nine anymore.
9. Scars on The Moon
There are lots of natural phenomena occurring on the Earth all year round like erosions, tsunamis, earthquakes and other natural disasters which constantly lead to the reformation of the Earth's surface. The Moon doesn't have this going for her which is why the Moon has got a lot of craters and scars in comparison to the Earth.
10. High and Low Tides
The high and low tides of oceans are caused due to the gravitational pulls of the moon and the sun.
11. Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first man to ever touch the Moon's surface and walk on it. He landed on the moon in 1969, and the only way to wipe off his footprints (and other astronauts') is by making another space body hit and demarcate the moon's surface.
12. Meteoroids
The size of a meteorite ranges between the speckle of dust to 10 meters in diameter! We refer to giant meteoroids as asteroids. When solid debris from space enters the Earth's atmosphere and lands on the surface, we call it a meteorite. On the other hand, if it burns up midway when falling through the atmosphere before reaching the surface, we call it a meteor.
13. Black Holes
Black holes are regions of space where no light or particulate matter can escape the space. This phenomenon is due to the intense gravitational pull of these so-called 'Black Holes' which makes it impossible for even light rays or electromagnetic radiations to pass through.
14. The Star 'Aldebaran'
One of the most amazing space facts is about the Pioneer Spacecraft that was sent to a star called the Aldebaran in space back in 1972. NASA scientists discovered signs of this spacecraft again in 2003. What makes this discovery astounding is the fact that it normally takes 2 million years to reach Aldebaran.
15. The Unknown Universe
The depths of the universe are still a mystery to many scientists as 96% of its total mass remains yet unknown. Over 80% of the matter in the Universe cannot be seen through which is referred to as 'Dark Matter' and is theorized to be made from undiscovered subatomic particles.
16. The Milky Way
The Milky Way is located at the heart of our galaxy or at the centre of the Solar System. Just like the Earth, the solar system revolves around the milky way. This has been recorded to be at 170 miles a second!
17. The Invisible Planet
There is only one planet that is invisible to the naked eye, and that is Neptune. You may be wondering how Scientists saw it? Well, they didn't. Arithmetic calculations and observations contributed to its sighting.
18. Stars
Stars are basically huge balls of hot gases (such as mixtures of hydrogen and helium) that glow in space. The sun is a star too, and there are approximately 100 billion stars in our galaxy, and the Milky Way is just a band of stars that form in our night sky!
19. 90377 Sedna- The Planetoid
One year on Sedna is equal to 10,500 years on Earth. Sedna is an asteroid that's referred to as a planetoid because it shares similar physical features as that of the Earth. It's located at a distance of about three times as far as Neptune within a hypothesized Oort Cloud. It's considered a dwarf planet too.
20.Silent Space
Space is completely silent since there's no atmosphere in it. Sound waves can't travel in space either since there's no medium to travel for sound waves. Radios are used in communications as radio waves are transmittable in space.
And here's a bonus space fact- Venus is the hottest planet in the universe with a recorded surface temperature of 450 degrees Celsius!
These interesting facts on ‘Space’ will leave your kid spellbound. These facts will be a great addition to his knowledge. But for his all-round development, you need something more. Your 50 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Your baby 's first birthday is close. He is almost a toddler, and whether or not he has started walking, he will definitely reach the toddler status when he turns one-year-old. Your little one is now beginning to talk, wave, eat proper food during mealtimes and enjoy his favourite music and books. He’s developing a shining personality. On an average, a 12-month old baby has a weight of 9 kgs and a length of 76 cm. Compare this to how your 50 week-old-baby weighed when he was born, that’s some growth right there!
50 Week Old Baby’s Development
Few steps forward, one step back could be the description of your baby’s development at this stage. You may have seen him wave goodbye to you a few weeks ago, but since then, he never has stopped. This is no reason to worry, it just means that all his energy is being directed to an emotional adjustment – for example, when you go away for work or his routine suddenly changes. The energy he used to use for simple skills like waving is now fully focused on developing a brand new skill. Such regression can happen when your baby is mastering a new skill to dazzle you with. Your baby’s vocabulary will also grow at this point even if he is not saying a bunch of new words. His brain is constantly observing new things and absorbing new information so keep talking to him using correct, full sentences, and keep encouraging. You can start using pronouns like “I am going to come out with you” instead of “Mama is going to come out with you”.

50 Week Old Baby's Developmental Milestones
You can expect to see the following 50-week-old baby milestones in your little child:
Your baby will insist on feeding himself with a fork or spoon.
Your baby will be able to handle and drink properly from a cup.
Your baby will be increasingly curious and start investigating each object he sees.
Your baby will start recognising your expressions; if you nod and smile, he will proceed with doing something, if you look terrified, he will stop.
Your baby will be more interested in toys that move or can be pulled and pushed, like rolling cars, balls, carts, etc.
Your baby might start to learn how to kick and throw.
Your baby will be able to take out objects from a container and return them back if once shown.
Your baby may be able to understand a few words like ‘drink’, ‘ball’, or ‘cup’.
Your baby may be able to scribble with a crayon.

Feeding
Your breastfed baby may continue to breastfeed even after 1 year of age. If you are following a child-led approach to breastfeeding, you can continue letting him take the lead. Some days, maybe in response to a virus or cold, he may breastfeed frequently while other days he might be too distracted to breastfeed and may resort to feeding frequently at night. Your milk supply will adjust accordingly. You can continue breastfeeding as long as you wish. When your baby turns 50 weeks, it is your decision whether or not you want to pump milk, depending on how your breasts react and your baby’s need for breast milk. Some mothers shift to giving their babies cow milk, and some continue to give breast milk. If you have developed a routine of pumping and storing milk and your baby is more than happy to have it in a cup when you are away, then you can easily continue with it.

Sleeping
Once your baby turns one and sleeps next to you in bed, you may wonder if now is the time to shift him to a crib or a separate room. Some families set up a nursery with a cot or a crib and you may envision your baby sleeping there, or you may find it easier to have him beside you in case he wakes up at night for a feed. Depending on what works for you, you can continue that or else you can do the transition slowly, for example, move the cot gradually from the bedroom to the hall to the separate nursery. For some days after shifting your baby to a cot in a separate room, you can lay a mattress on the floor and sleep next to him till he gets used to the shift. Having the same light, sound, and atmosphere in the new room can make your baby feel more at ease.

50 Week Old Baby Care Tips
A few ways in which you can take care of your 50-week-old baby:
Encourage your child to walk by giving him lots of opportunities and not stopping to pick him up every once in a while.
Give him your finger, in the beginning, when your child is trying to walk as it will make him feel at ease.
You should give whole milk to your baby when you are weaning him, but if you have a family history of obesity, cardiovascular issues or high cholesterol, the doctor might recommend low-fat milk.
Your baby will watch and mimic everything you do, so don't show any negative behaviour in front of him.
Keep away dangerous objects from your baby as this is the age he will put everything in his mouth.
If your baby is clingy, don’t encourage it by stopping your task to cuddle him. Instead, include him in your task like giving him a piece of cloth to hold if you are doing laundry.
If your baby rejects some food, cook it in a different way next time and feed it to him.
Let your baby play, observe, and eat his food. Playing with food is also a learning process, and if you rush him, he may get stressed.
Tests and Vaccinations
This is about the time to go for a doctor’s checkup as your baby is turning one-year-old.
1. Tests
Your doctor will take your baby’s measurements, do a physical check to know if he is meeting his milestones as per his age; he will see if he is talking, pointing, walking and so on. The doctor might also ask how many words your baby can speak, so count them and keep a rough number in mind.
2. Vaccinations
Most vaccinations to be taken at this stage are boosters for what your baby has previously received. These include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Polio, Hib, DTaP as well as the first doses for MMR and chickenpox.
Games and Activities
Below are a few games and activities you can play with your little one:
Sit across your baby with your legs spread on both the sides. Playfully roll a ball to him and ask him to roll it back.
If your baby is standing on his own, you can show him how to kick a ball. First, show him by doing it yourself. Next, place the ball in front of his legs and help him swing his leg to make contact with the ball.
Place a few light items like an empty cereal box, a container or a soft drink can at a small distance away from your baby. Demonstrate rolling a ball to knock them down. Give the ball to your baby and ask him to roll it like you, to knock the items down. This will help develop his comprehension skills.
Play tag with him while running around a room, asking him to catch you. Your baby will pick up the game and try to crawl or walk after you. This will help him develop his gross motor skills.

When to Consult a Doctor
You should consult a doctor in the following cases:
If your baby has difficulty seeing objects, squints often, tilts his head to see, or rubs his eyes often, take him to see a doctor as he may have vision problems.
If your baby’s eyes are reddish, teary, sensitive to light, or has pus in them, he may have pinkeye so consult a doctor soon.
If your kid is vomiting frequently, take him to the doctor to check if he has lead poisoning.
If your baby’s weight suddenly drops at this stage, don’t stress, it is normal for toddlers to gain height more than weight close to one year of age.

Benefits of Eating Capsicum during Pregnancy
Capsicums are available in multiple colours and each type has a specific benefit to offer during pregnancy.
1. Red Capsicum
Eating red capsicum during pregnancy is beneficial massively since it contains cancer prevention properties due to the presence of lycopene antioxidants within it.
2. Green Capsicum
Green capsicum is highly recommended for women due to the presence of natural silicon in it, which keeps nail and hair healthy during pregnancy.
3. Yellow Capsicum
The presence of lutein zeaxanthin is quite high in yellow capsicum. It helps in combating free radicals and boosting the immune system during pregnancy.
Side Effects of Excessive Consumption of Capsicum while Pregnant
Although eating capsicum is beneficial during pregnancy, in certain conditions eating it may prove harmful for the mother-to-be and the baby.
Capsicum contains numerous seeds in it, which have a strong tendency of triggering allergies in a person who already suffers from them. These can result in rashes on your body or sneezing cycles, which may not be safe during pregnancy. Similarly, consuming a lot of capsicum can upset the internal balance of the stomach, causing frequent stools or indigestion, too.
Mothers are strongly advised to stay away from capsicum while breastfeeding since it can make the breastmilk spicy for the child. Similarly, it is best to stop eating capsicum a couple of weeks prior to delivery, since it can cause thinning of the blood and result in excessive bleeding during childbirth.
How to Choose a Right Capsicum & How to Store It
When purchasing capsicum from the market, opt for ones that are firm, with an evenly coloured skin that is smooth and spotless. Stay away from capsicums that look dry or wrinkled. Make sure you wash them before use or storage and use them as freshly as possible.

Why Involving Kids in the Kitchen Is Important
Raising children is a challenging experience. Everyone has a unique style of raising children.
One of the ways that work the best is 'involvement'.
Involving children in your daily tasks either by explaining what you do or by making them help you, is a super-efficient way of raising kids that instils many qualities in them.
When children see their parents make food for them and enjoy the kitchen environment, they develop the urge to work in the kitchen.
Guided activities in the kitchen develop many sides of their personality; some of these activities are:
Observation - At a younger age (8 months to 2 years) when a parent shows them activities like cutting, cooking, mixing, and kneading, it is fascinating for them, and they tend to 'Observe'. Kids are keen learners, and their concentration improves. Good observation skills are preliminary for learning and development.
Teamwork - Children working in a team is a good quality to learn at a young age. For instance, if the mother asks the child to peel the potatoes or arrange vegetables in the vegetable tray, the child will ask the mother questions at every step, and the two will work in coordination to complete the task.
Knowledge - Child's knowledge of ingredients improves when they learn practically. They also see the easy way of doing things in the kitchen.
Fine Motor Skills - Holding things, passing something in the kitchen, tearing leaves or other food items, and dehulling pulses and seeds are activities that develop the fine motor skills and improve hand-eye coordination
Ability to Question - Children learn to ask 'why' as they work in the kitchen with their parents, and this develops their reasoning skills.
Leadership Skills - By imitating their parents in the kitchen, they learn to take charge and own the food that they are making. This develops the idea of ownership and good leadership skills.
Time Management - When food needs to be prepared within a certain time frame, for instance, by lunchtime, children may see you hurry the process and stick to time deadlines. This teaches them the importance of time management.
Special Bond – Working together in the kitchen can develop a lifelong bond between the child and the parent. These memories stay in young minds forever!
Starting from asking questions to the development of motor skills, these activities can instil in your child many values. How can you get your child engrossed in the kitchen activities? Here is a list of possible activities that you can indulge in with your child in the kitchen:
AGE 8-18 MONTHS :
Recognising the fruits and vegetables and stacking them in their respective places in the kitchen.
Peeling the potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Shelling peas and cleaning green leafy vegetables.
Naming the fruits, vegetables, flours, butter, sugar and other ingredients present in the kitchen.
Mixing and stirring the flour or salads.
Observing the step by step method of preparing food.
Knowing the types of equipment used in the kitchen like the refrigerator, microwave, gas stove, induction, blender, water purifier, etc.
AGE 18 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS
Cracking eggs.
Cutting soft foods.
Setting up the table.
Cooking foods that do not involve the use of heat. Foods like salad, tossing cooked pasta with sauce, sandwichs, corn chaat, etc. can be made by children.
Supervision of Time - Asking children to call the parent when there are a specific number of whistles on the cooker.
Using different types of kitchen equipment like peeler, masher, blender under an adult's supervision.
Apart from channelising the energy of children, kitchen activities keep them interested and develop an inquisitive approach. Children might even enjoy these activities and can go one to become chefs. This is one way you can explore the hidden talents of your kids.
The only thing to be careful about is safety. Measures have to be taken to ensure that kids are safe and do not harm themselves or others.
