Intake of Potassium During Pregnancy - Need and Importance
When you’re pregnant, you experience radical hormonal changes. These hormonal changes are often the cause of numerous illnesses, diseases and conditions commonly experienced while being pregnant. To counteract this, it is important to have a diet that is specifically designed to balance out these changes. One nutrient that is considered important for this purpose is potassium.
What is Potassium?
An essential mineral that the body requires, potassium is responsible for numerous important body functions. It helps maintain a balance of electrolytes and fluids inside the body while also being responsible for sending signals and impulses from your nerves to your muscles to help them contract.
Role of Potassium When Pregnant
When you are pregnant, your body expands and will need extra minerals to counteract the side-effects of pregnancy. Here’s why:
Fluid retention is a common problem in pregnancy. Consuming potassium helps alleviate this issue.
It is common that women have an electrolyte imbalance during pregnancy. This can cause your immune system to become weaker. Potassium combats against this.
Leg cramping and restless leg are common during pregnancy and could be caused due to a mineral imbalance. Potassium along with calcium and magnesium is important to avoid this.
What Should Be the Ideal Daily Intake of Potassium?
It is extremely important to note that potassium shouldn’t be consumed in large doses. A potassium overdose in your body can be just as dangerous as having low potassium levels. When consuming supplements or foods rich in potassium, consult a doctor to understand what your natural potassium levels are and the quantity of the supplement you should consume. A general guideline for daily intake of potassium is 4,700 milligrams if you’re not breastfeeding and 5,100 milligrams if you are.
What is the Normal Range of Potassium During Pregnancy?
The normal range of potassium during pregnancy depends on how far along you are. For instance, during the first trimester, the normal range is between 3.6 mmol/L to 5 mmol/L, during the second trimester the normal range is between 3.3 mmol/L to 5 mmol/L and during the third trimester you can expect a normal range between 3.3 mmol/L to 5.1 mmol/L. Doctors consider a range of 4.4 mmol/L a safe range to maintain during the entire span of the pregnancy.
High Potassium (Hyperkalaemia) in Pregnancy
High potassium levels are extremely dangerous during pregnancy, it can cause a strain of a condition known as hyperkalaemia and in some cases, which can lead to kidney failure or cardiac arrest. It can also cause severe and near-fatal dehydration and aggravate a type of type 1 diabetes of the mellitus strain.
What Are Its Causes
There can be numerous reasons why you get hyperkalaemia. Some of these are:
Overdose of certain drugs
Overdose of supplements
Eating too much potassium rich foods
Signs and Symptoms
It is important that you identify hyperkalaemia as soon as possible and seek medical attention for this. Here are some signs and symptoms of this condition to help you identify it.
Irregular heartbeats
Extreme fatigue
Chest pains
Irregular pulmonary functions that lead to trouble breathing
Numbness
A tingling feeling
For more signs and symptoms of this condition please consult your doctor.
Effects of High Potassium During Pregnancy
The effects of high potassium during pregnancy can be dangerous. It can lead to miscarriages, premature delivery or in some cases a fatal outcome for both the mother and child.
How to Treat It
Early diagnosis is essential to treating this condition. If diagnosed early you will be
Given calcium supplements to prevent damage to heart muscles
Administered insulin, certain diuretics or sodium polystyrene sulfonate to lower potassium levels
Severe cases may call for dialysis if there is kidney failure.
It is usually considered a medical emergency and should be treated in a hospital environment with 24-hour care surrounding the mother.
Low Potassium (Hypokalemia) While Pregnant
Another strain of hypokalaemia is the one where your potassium levels are far too low. This can be equally dangerous for the body and should be treated with care. A potassium deficiency can also lead to muscle cramps, trouble with the delivery and other unwanted outcomes for your pregnancy.
What Are Its Causes
Here are a few causes for low potassium during pregnancy:
An imbalanced diet
Constant vomiting leading to mineral imbalances in the body
Diarrhoea leading to a mineral imbalance in the body
Fluid retention
Signs of Potassium Deficiency
It is important to identify and treat a potassium deficiency during pregnancy. Here are some low potassium in pregnancy symptoms.
Muscle cramps
Weakness or tiredness
Heavy constipation
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Depression
Irregular heartbeat or rhythm
A tingling feeling
Numbness
Extremely dry skin
Low blood pressure
Effects of Low Potassium During Pregnancy
The effects of low potassium are commonly considered dangerous. However, a high potassium level is considered much worse and can lead to fatal outcomes. In extremely rare cases where the potassium is extremely low, it could, in theory, lead to cardiac diseases but this is highly unlikely. It is more common to face a condition known as Edema which is irregular swelling and inflammation throughout your body during pregnancy or you can get a form of UTI due to water retention. This is also a cause of premature delivery. If you think you have these symptoms see a doctor immediately.
How to Treat It
Treating low potassium during pregnancy can be extremely easy. Here are a few ways to ensure you bring your potassium levels up:
Eat a well-balanced diet with potassium-rich food like potatoes and avocados
Take the recommended dose of potassium supplements
In extreme cases, your doctor may restore potassium levels through the use of intravenous administration of electrolytes
Can You Take Potassium Supplements
At this point, 'the question can you take potassium pills while pregnant' must have crossed your mind. The answer is yes, you can take supplements but stick to recommended doses that your doctor prescribes and run it by him before you start. It is considered safer to eat potassium-rich food, however, as the chances of an overdose are less likely.

Never take supplements without talking to a doctor. An imbalance in potassium levels can be extremely dangerous.
Don’t exceed recommended dosages of supplements.
Don’t focus on only potassium when planning a diet. This can cause an imbalance in other areas of your nutrition chart.
When adding potassium to your diet, it is recommended that you seek the advice of your doctor and draw up a meal plan with the help of your nutritionist. Remember, a balanced diet is not overly reliant on one mineral. Talk to your nutritionist for more information on how to plan your diet when pregnant.

12 Most Important Nutrients Needed for Strong Immune System in Kids
Your little one is growing up pretty fast and you're wondering where the time has gone. Somewhere in the middle of his first feed and his thousandth sleepless night, you've found yourself reading and re-reading hundreds of nutrition charts for your child. As parents, it is important for us to figure out the best diet for our little ones, in sync with their developmental needs. While breastfeed is enough and essential to build a baby's immunity for the first 6 months, the struggle begins when it’s time to introduce solids. What should we feed our babies to ensure their immune system becomes strong and they stay healthy?
A good way to build your child's immune system is to understand their nutrient needs and supplement their daily diet with the nutrients needed for developing a strong immune system. Doctors recommend that parents start following an immunity-friendly diet early in life, as this is the time when our children are most susceptible to catching infections. Also, if children develop the habit of eating a balanced, wholesome meal right from babyhood, this habit will continue when they become adults.
Here are the top 12 nutrients - and the associated foods - that your little one must eat to build his immunity.
Vitamins
1. Vitamin A
Vitamin A acts as an antioxidant that effectively helps strengthen the immune system of your baby by protecting him against infections, measles and carcinogens.
What to Feed: Foods rich in Vitamin A include colourful foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, peas and tomatoes.
2. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an important antiviral and anticancer nutrient that is used by white blood cells to combat infections and inflammations. It is most commonly found in citrus fruits. However, you'll be surprised to know that Vitamin C is found in all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables too!
What to Feed: Citrus fruits like oranges and lime, spinach, bell peppers, papaya and strawberries.
3. Vitamin E
Similar to Vitamin C, Vitamin E also helps fight off infections and is an extremely crucial immunity booster. It is also great to maintain healthy skin.
What to Feed: You'll find Vitamin E in nuts like almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts.
4. Folate/Folic Acid
Folate is the natural form of this nutrient, while Folic Acid is the synthetic form of a type of Vitamin B that helps in maturity and multiplication of white blood cells. This is key to developing a strong immune system.
What to Feed: Green vegetables like broccoli and spinach and dried legumes like beans and lentils are a good source of folate. These are excellent foods for developing a strong immune system in kids.
Minerals
1. Manganese
Manganese helps your child's immune system protect them from heart disease and certain types of cancer too! It is also helpful in balancing blood sugar levels.
What to Feed: The best sources of Manganese are nuts, cereals and leafy vegetables.
2. Selenium
Selenium is a powerful antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic mineral that helps in protecting your body from a range of diseases and infections.
What to Feed: This mineral is found in tuna, barley, Brazil nuts and sardines - all these are excellent immunity boosting foods for kids.
3. Zinc
Zinc helps in controlling any inflammations in your body and it helps restore weakened immunity as well.
What to Feed: Zinc is found in oysters, lean meats, baked beans, yogurt and chickpeas.
4. Copper
Copper deficiency slows down the activity of infection fighting cells. Copper is essential in traces for healing and repairing injured tissues too.
What to Feed: Copper is found in foods like lentils, almonds and beef.
5. Iron
Iron helps your little one's body produce energy by carrying oxygen to the cells. Iron deficiency can weaken your immune system drastically!
What to Feed: Good sources of iron that are excellent immunity boosters for kids include lean meant, legumes, leafy vegetables and fortified foods.
6. Sulphur
Sulphur fulfills a lot of functions to help you maintain a healthy immune system. It helps clean your body of toxins, and along with Vitamin C, helps develop healthy cells as well. Sulfur also helps reduce allergic reactions and parasitic infections.
What to Feed: Sulphur is found in cruciferous vegetables, dry fruits, eggs and legumes.
Other Nutrients
1. Proteins
Adequate intake of proteins is essential in maintaining your body's immunity system. Proteins are categorized majorly into antibodies, enzymes, messengers, etc. and help your body fight foreign particles and regulate the immune system.
What to Feed: Meat, eggs, nuts and seeds are excellent sources of proteins.
2. Essential Fatty Acids or Good Fats
Fats in general have become associated with obesity and an unfit body. However, in an effort to cut down on non-essential fatty acids we end up cutting down on the intake of essential fatty acids or good fats too! These are extremely important in enhancing the immune system's function, so make sure you do not deprive your child of them.
What to Feed: Flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, and cod liver oil are good sources of essential fatty acids and are excellent to increase immunity in kids.
Now that you know the best foods to develop your child's immunity, start including them in his day-to-day meals. Your little one's body will be able to stay safe from infections, germs and diseases. Read more

Shilpa Shetty Just Shared an Experience About Her Post-Baby Body That's Unbelievable But True!
There is a world of difference in our bodies before and after the birth of our baby. We gain weight, our skin feels loose, and our tummy protrudes. But we see these things as normal after-effects of childbirth. Unlike celebrity moms who seem to bounce back within weeks, we need to accept our postpartum bodies for a long time. We don't have that kind of money or time to splurge on quick and professional weight loss! However, it may be time to rethink this viewpoint. Recently, Bollywood mom Shilpa Shetty, who has always been the 'Fittest Mom', shared an experience about her post-baby body. It happened to her a few months after her delivery, when she was out having lunch with her husband Raj Kundra.
Shilpa became mother to a baby boy Viaan back in 2012. After her delivery, she remained confined to the house for several months at a stretch. This is a common practice in India, when many moms remain confined indoors after delivery, to recover their health and devote complete attention to their baby.
After seven months, Shilpa went along with her husband one day for lunch. This was one of her first times out in public since the birth of her baby, and she was already feeling nervous. Our body changes so much after we become mothers that it can be daunting to come to terms with it. But isn’t this a normal part and parcel of motherhood? Doesn’t it happen to everyone? Well, Shilpa hadn’t prepared for what happened at the restaurant.
“I didn't get out of my house for seven months (after the birth of my baby). After my delivery, I went with my husband for brunch. There were a few ladies sitting. They laughed. I heard them say, 'She hasn't still lost her weight'.
They were laughing and talking about my weight. It was very daunting…”
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Source: https://www.idiva.com/[/caption]
Shilpa, who has always been synonymous with fitness, was actually being targeted for “being overweight” and “not losing weight fast enough” after the delivery of her child. When we look at her now, so fit and glowing at 41, it really seems incredible that she too, like many of us mothers, had to suffer so much pressure and body-shaming for something that is not even in our control.
On Getting Her Mental Strength – and Body – Back
The incident at the restaurant definitely shook Shilpa from within. But it also depicted the sad reality of our society: people will always judge. They will judge you for not losing baby weight; they will judge you for trying to lose it too quickly. As mothers, we are all targets for criticism and judgment; yes, celebrity moms included! Learning from that experience, Shilpa decided to shake off all this judgment and not hide away. Eight months after her delivery, she returned to work with the dance show Nach Baliye. Her body was still recovering and it was a challenge to come out in the public eye, especially when she looked a lot different from before.
“Nach Baliye was my first outing after pregnancy, eight months after I delivered. I was very scared. Clothes weren't fitting me. I was size 16, double the size I've ever been in my life.”
She now started working on getting her pre-baby body back, not to shut out judgmental people, but because she wanted to do it for herself. Fitness had always been important to her, and as a mom, being fit and on her toes was now even more important than before. She did not take to strenuous gymming or crash diets as these are unhealthy ways to lose weight after pregnancy. Instead, Shilpa Shetty's fitness regime consisted of a 20 minutes workout, comprising simple activities like walking, taking the stairs, and yoga. The yoga pose Vajrasana has especially helped her get fit by boosting her metabolism and digestion. She recommends it to every new mother.

On Fellow Mom Kareena Kapoor Khan
What Shilpa went through after her pregnancy is a situation that now faces Kareena Kapoor Khan. She recently became a mother to a baby boy, and she too, like Shilpa, has been synonymous with fitness. Bebo has always looked ravishing and fit and gone through incredible body transformations through sheer willpower and hard work. However, she gained 18 kgs during her pregnancy – kilos that will (and should) take time to shed. Shilpa spoke about her, commenting on how this "pressure to look good" is one that all moms face, everywhere:
"As an actress, I can understand the emotion and pressure on her. I can understand that emotion of being judged, especially as an actress and someone who has been synonym with having a good body and being into fitness. I had the same pressure when I became a mother."
Well, we are glad that Bebo too is taking it gradually and not obsessing about getting her pre-baby body back. She is relying on these post-pregnancy fitness mantras to recover her strength and strictly staying away from anything that is harsh or takes a toll on her postpartum body.
Becoming a mother is a delight like no other. It is also a natural, transforming experience that changes your body in many ways. It is wrong to expect – or for anyone else to expect – that our bodies will bounce back to their old shape after delivery. Instead, this is a gradual and consistent effort we need to take to start feeling healthy and energetic again. We need to do this not to show our family members or friends. We need to do this for ourselves. Shilpa summed it up beautifully:
“People love to talk about others but you've to understand what fitness means to you. It doesn't matter what other people think of you. It is a part of our life we are going to be judged anyway. When you're working, that gives you enough inspiration or goal. Some do it for their loved one, some for work, I think you've to do it for YOURSELF.” Read more

Questions to Start a Conversation With Young Kids
It's time you get to really know who your kids are. Do you wish to have a decent conversation with your kid but never quite know how to go about it? Check out our list of questions to ask your young human. We promise you'll never be tongue-tied or at a loss for words again!
Your child is growing and so is his mind, and you want to know all the thoughts that go on in his head. Unfortunately, your child refuses to initiate conversation most of the time. And since you are not a mind reader, it is up to you to take the lead.
Here Are 10 Questions You Must Ask Your Child to Get Them Talking
1. If You Could Change Any Part of Your Dry, Wiich Part Would You Change and Why?
What a break from the usual “how was your day” icebreaker! Your child will gladly tell you which part of his day was far from perfect and why it was that way. Just like adults, kids too love to complain.
2. Do You Know What Made me Laugh Today?
If the above doesn't work, it could mean that your kids need a little push to get talking. And what better way to do this than to share something funny with him? One you are done narrating, you are definitely going to get a good response to question 3!
3. Did Anything Make You Laugh?
If something did amuse your kid today, he will share it with you! However, be prepared for your kid to say something like “no. I had a really boring day.” And if he does say that, it would be a good time to ask him question number 4.
4. Did Something Upsetting Happen?
Sometimes, your child will say the day was boring when in fact something made him feel sad and he doesn't want to talk about it – at least not until he is asked. Asking him about it in a calm manner will make it more likely for him to share exactly what happened. ||
5. What is the One Thing About You that Most People Don't Know?
This is the one question that is sure to have some interesting answers! And who knows, you may get to learn something new about your kid too!
6. Which is Your Favourite Song?
This is a classic question that always works as most kids love music. And since new songs come out every day, the answer to this question will never get old. In fact, it will change way too often.
7. Who Do You Love the Most in the World?
As a mom, it is natural that you will want your kid to love you more than anything and anyone else. And chances are high that he will say just that. However, be prepared for a variety of answers – his favourite soft toy, his class teacher, or even dad. Don't worry, ma! Your kid loves you a lot, and they say love cannot be measured.
8. What Time of the Day are You Most Happy – Morning, Afternoon or Night?
Want to know if your kid is a morning bird, an evening lark or a night owl? All you have to do is ask this question!
9. Have You Ever Been Happy and Sad at the Same Time?
What, you thought little kids can't be philosophical? If yes, your kid's answer to this question will definitely change your mind. Little kids can be very wise, you see.
10. Which Animal Would You Like to Have as A Pet and Why?
You may think you already know the answer to this question because you have seen how lovingly your child looks at the neighbour's cat, dog or parrot. But kids say he darnedest things! So you might hear of made up animals (parrot-cat!), creatures that don't exist (unicorns!), even cartoon characters (Doraemon!) Hear them out before you tell them that the mentioned animal doesn't exist. Or don't. It's totally your call.
Remember, never force your kids to answer a question if they don't feel comfortable. Of course, you can always try to persuade them, but if they refuse after a few tries, don't pressure them. Just like adults, kids too have some thoughts they would like to keep private. It is up to us as parents to respect their boundaries, especially if you want them to respect yours. Read more

Q. my baby girl is crying because of gas. can please tell how to relieve gas?
Dr Vandan H Kumar

A. from your history it appears that your child is having colic pain due to gas in abdomen
in colic pain you can give anti colic medicines like colicaid 0.5 ml to the child and this medicine can be given maximum three or four times per day but to prevent this problem kindly do regular burping for 15 to 20 minutes.d
do not kee ep the child back on the bed after one burping (all gas is not removed with one burping)
during the cdolic episode you can do stomach massage and limb cycling movements and if the child is more than 2 months of age you can give tummy time also.
advisable to learn more about it from your doctor.

Q. my baby girl is not sleeping at night.

A. the sleeping pattern of the child changes from time to time and will improve with increasing age of the child. if the growth and weight gain of the child is proper along with proper urine stool then there is no need to worry regarding the sleeping pattern.
you have to just see that the child is not having any disturbance during the sleep because it can occur due to gas as well as due to digestion problem. aldso see for the comfort of the child and see the bedding on which the child is sleeping.
try to prevent temperature variations around the child that is from hot to cold and cold to hot weather because that also can cause disturbance in the sleep. d

A. Could be due to stomach pain and sometimes kids have an aversion to a particular breast and they do not like to take direct breastfeeding also since you haven’t mentioned the current age of your child I would recommend you to kindly consult a specialist one time
