Baby Rubbing Eyes - Reasons and Prevention
Babies rubbing their eyes is possibly the cutest thing you will see. Their tiny fists rubbing those round curious eyes are sure to tug at your heartstrings. Usually, babies rub their eyes when they feel tired or sleepy, but in some cases, your baby might also be feeling pain due to dust or an eyelash in the eyes, an eye infection, or even an allergy.
Your infant rubbing his/her eyes can be a warning sign for all the above. You need to be alert, so that you can do everything to help prevent your little one from accidentally hurting his or her eyes by rubbing too hard. Let’s look at some of the reasons why babies rub their eyes.
Why Do Babies Rub Their Eyes?
There are several reasons why babies rub their eyes –
1. They Are Feeling Sleepy
Sometimes, along with rubbing the eyes, your baby may also yawn. This means that he/ she is sleepy and tired. When you are tired, your eyes are fatigued. That’s why babies rub their eyes, so that they can try and relieve some of the tension and soreness around the eye muscles and in the eyelids, just like during a massage. This indicates that its time for a good, long nap!
2. Their Eyes Are Dry
Your baby can also rub his/her eyes when they become too dry. A tear film covers the inside eye and evaporates if it gets exposed to air for a long time. This creates discomfort, due to dryness of the eyes, and your baby may instinctively rub his/ her eyes to relieve that discomfort, especially since rubbing creates tears, which bring back moisture to the eyes.
3. They Are Curious
You may notice that when you close your eyes and rub them, you see lights and patterns on the insides of your eyelid. Your little one may have recently developed the motor skills to rub his/ her eyes and is experimenting with this new skill. Your baby may be amazed by the patterns seen while rubbing the eyes, and could be trying it over and over again to experience it.
4. There Is Something in Their Eyes
Your baby may be rubbing his/her eyes continuously if there is something in there causing irritation. It may be specks of dust, an eyelash, or dried mucus. It is important to note that even blinking or tears may be signs of this. If there is an irritant in your baby’s eyes, use a soft wet cloth to wipe the eye and face so that nothing else gets in. After that, use cold water to clean your baby’s eyes (never use warm water inside the eyes). Make sure someone is holding the baby’s head or there is adequate support when you do this.
If you see something stuck in the corner of your baby’s eye, try using a warm, wet cloth or cotton swab to brush it out. If the tears and blinking persist even after that, it might mean the foreign object is still stuck inside the eye. In that case, it is best to visit a doctor.
5. Painful or Itchy Eyes
Another reason for a baby rubbing her his/ eyes might be due to allergies or an infection that may present itself through pain or itching. Symptoms that your baby has an eye infection may include swollen or reddish eyes, discharge, fever, or continued crying. In such cases, it is better to consult a doctor so that he/she can correctly diagnose and treat your baby’s eye infection or allergy.
How Can You Prevent Babies From Rubbing Their Eyes?
You need to take some measures to prevent your baby from rubbing his/ her eyes often, as it might cause injury or scratches to your little one’s eyes. Here are some ways to prevent this from happening.
Try covering your baby’s hands with mittens if he/she has a vigourous eye-rubbing habit. This will protect his/her skin from getting scratched or irritated.
Put your baby to sleep, immediately, if you notice eye-rubbing accompanied by yawning. Establish a sleep routine for your baby and stick to it. Once your baby gets used to it, there will be no more tiredness, and hence, no more eye rubbing.
To prevent foreign objects from getting inside your baby’s eyes, try not to take him/ her to places where there is a lot of dust flying around. If you have to, then properly protect the baby’s eyes and nose before exposing him/her to dust.
Risks of Vigorous Eye Rubbing
While mild eye rubbing when sleepy, etc. Is unlikely to pose any threat, vigourous eye-rubbing may have certain risks. Here are some of the risks of rubbing eyes frequently or with force.
1. Increases the Risk of an Infection
Babies are naturally curious and keep touching everything around them. Not to mention the people around who transfer the germs they carry, when cuddling the little ones. Rubbing the eyes increases the risk of these germs being transferred into your baby’s eye and causing an infection.
2. Worsens Eyesight in the Long Term
Constantly rubbing the eyes leads to thinning of the corneal tissue, worsening eyesight in the long run. While the effects may not be as immediate as an infection, your baby is more likely to grow up with progressive myopia later on in life.
3. Can Cause an Injury
The baby may vigorously rub his/her eye if there is something stuck in there causing irritation. This increases the risk of a corneal abrasion, which can be painful and take long to heal.
Do not worry or panic if you notice your baby developing an eye-rubbing habit. If you think something is bothering him/ her and notice any redness or swelling, try washing the eyes and cleaning the area around them, using the methods explained above. If that does not help with redness, and the swelling persists, consult a doctor. If the eye- rubbing continues to a greater extent, even without redness or swelling, it is still better to visit the doctor once to be 100% sure that everything is alright. After all, no compromises should be taken when it is your baby in question!

Taking Labetalol in Pregnancy - Is It Safe?
Pregnancy is a time when you need to stay in good health to keep all the complications at bay. It is a well-known fact that labetalol is considered effective in lowering high blood pressure during pregnancy, but one must remain very careful about its probable side-effects as well. It slows the heart rate and improves blood flow, thus decreasing blood pressure. However, it does not cure it. The drug is only a part of the complete treatment for high blood pressure, which includes exercise, diet, and overall weight control. Hence, as a precautionary measure, one must know all about the medicine.
What is Labetalol?
Labetalol is a drug used for treating high blood pressure. This medication is termed ‘beta-blocker’ – a group of drugs that can be given orally for long-term hypertension management and intravenously in severe hypertensive situations. Lowering blood pressure helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems. It relaxes the blood vessels and slows the heart rate, which results in improved blood flow, thus decreasing blood pressure.
Is It Safe to Take Labetalol During Pregnancy?
High blood pressure or hypertension is a serious concern for women during pregnancy. It can sometimes cause severe health complications for the mother and the developing baby.
Labetalol for high blood pressure during pregnancy is prescribed to women who have high blood pressure during pregnancy (pregnancy-induced hypertension or gestational hypertension). High blood pressure can lead to damaged kidneys, brain, heart and blood vessels, if not treated promptly. If these organs are affected, it may lead to heart disease, heart failure, heart attack, kidney failure, loss of vision, or stroke.
Sometimes, women who are being treated for high blood pressure before pregnancy are made to switch to labetalol from their previous medicine. It also depends on how many weeks pregnant the patient is. It is, therefore, important to weigh how necessary labetalol is to your health against any possible risk that you or your baby might be in. Ultimately, the decision to start, stop, continue or change any medicine should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider.
Why Is Labetalol Used During Pregnancy?
To control high blood pressure for the health of the unborn baby and the mother.
It can be used as an acceptable oral antihypertensive agent.
Labetalol for high blood pressure during pregnancy is instrumental in causing a smooth and sustained fall in blood pressure and is free of any grievous side-effects.
Labetalol supersedes all other medicines as a first-line drug and can be safely taken in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Side-Effects and Risks of Taking Labetalol During Pregnancy
It has been generally observed that older adults are more sensitive to the side-effects of the drug. It is not necessary that a side-effect will definitely occur, but if it occurs, it may need medical attention. Though labetalol is often prescribed to expectant ladies, some common side-effects are as follows:
Taking medicine daily causes fatigue
A regular dosage of the medicine can also cause an upset stomach
You might find that it sometimes results in a stuffy nose
The medicine, when used regularly, makes one feel excessively tired
Sometimes, it might cause tingling in the scalp or skin
Some patients have also reported dizziness and drowsiness after consuming the medicine daily.
Some side-effects of the medication do not need any medical attention. As the body gradually gets accustomed to the medicine, the side-effects disappear. Even the healthcare provider gives useful guidance to prevent or reduce the side-effects of the medicine. If any side-effect happens to be bothersome, the health care provider must soon be consulted.
Things You Need to Be Careful About
Labetalol is safe as a medicine for hypertension. Nevertheless, one should be careful before taking the medicine and follow the instructions given by the doctor.
Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly.
If it is discontinued suddenly, it may cause chest pain or a heart attack.
Avoid taking the medicine if you are allergic to it.
Discontinue taking it if you have a second or third-degree heart block or very slow heartbeat.
Do not take the medicine if you have any kidney or liver disease, diabetes or allergies.
FAQs
As high blood pressure during pregnancy is a common symptom, there are bound to be many questions that need to be answered to understand it well. In order to alleviate some of the anxieties related to it, you might feel delighted to know about the frequently asked questions related to the use of labetalol during pregnancy.
Is labetalol available as a generic drug?
Do I need a prescription for labetalol?
Are there drugs and supplements that interact with labetalol?
What else should be known about labetalol?
What special dietary instructions should one follow?
Here are some more:
1. What If I Already Consumed Labetalol When Pregnant?
Consult a doctor if you have taken any medicine when already pregnant. The doctor will then decide whether the medicine is still required or you should discontinue it. The doctor will also determine the lowest labetalol dose in pregnancy that will work so that it is safe for you as well as the unborn baby.
2. Can Consuming Labetalol Cause the Baby to Be Born With Birth Defects?
Since most of the baby’s internal organs develop within the first 3 months (12 weeks) of pregnancy, any risk of birth defects will be higher at this time. Only a few studies have been conducted to identify if conditions like hypospadias or heart defects are linked to consumption of labetalol during pregnancy. The studies do not show any such link between labetalol and these defects at present.
3. Can Consuming Labetalol When Pregnant Cause Miscarriage?
One of the most common pregnancy-related issues is miscarriage. It is the spontaneous loss of the baby in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. Miscarriage due to the use of a particular drug is very rare.
There are no assessments on miscarriage after consuming labetalol. Very little evidence of miscarriages proves that it is one’s personal health status which is equally responsible for any such unfortunate eventuality.
4. Does Labetalol Cause Stillbirth?
Losing a baby is a terrible emotional blow. A baby who is born without any signs of life after 24 weeks of pregnancy is called a stillborn child. The mother ‘s health, age, lifestyle, and certain genetic factors are some of the reasons for it.
It is very difficult to say whether labetalol causes stillbirth. There is a higher risk of stillbirth when the blood pressure of the pregnant mother is poorly controlled. Though there are cases where women taking labetalol experienced stillbirth, there are others who had a completely safe delivery. It is the high blood pressure that causes the risk of stillbirth and not labetalol, which actually alters the risk.
5. Does Labetalol Cause Preterm Birth (Before 37 Week), If Taken in Pregnancy?
Labetalol and pregnancy are absolutely common. Preterm delivery is sometimes medically induced by the doctor due to concerns about the baby’s health in the womb or because of the severity of the expectant mother’s high blood pressure. Therefore, it cannot definitely be concluded that the medicines that are used to treat high blood pressure during pregnancy are actually responsible for preterm delivery. Some studies of preterm birth rate were conducted, in which it was found that taking labetalol during pregnancy is not linked to an increased risk of preterm birth.
6. Can Consuming Labetalol in Pregnancy Cause Low Birth Weight?
It is quite complicated a question to affirm. Many of the studies that were conducted on expectant mothers found no evidence that taking labetalol during pregnancy increased the risk of low birth weight in the baby. More studies are required to absolutely confirm that the use of labetalol during pregnancy does not cause low birth weight in the baby.
7. Can Taking Labetalol Cause other Health Problems in the Newborn Child?
It is absolutely uncertain whether a labetalol dose in pregnancy can affect the baby after birth. There are some known side-effects of a labetalol dose in pregnancy, like low heart rate, low blood pressure, and low blood sugar. Sometimes, these effects are found in babies who were exposed to labetalol in their mother’s womb. However, a number of studies have suggested that the likelihood of any complication with the baby after birth is not due to the exposure of the baby to labetalol in the mother’s womb. Therefore, mothers who have been taking labetalol during pregnancy should arrange for the baby to be born in a unit where the baby can be well-monitored and treated for a few hours or days after birth, if required.
8. Is There a Need for Extra Monitoring for Me and Baby During Pregnancy or After Delivery?
When women with high blood pressure deliver their baby, they are usually offered special care and are closely monitored to ensure that their blood pressure is in the correct range and their baby is developing and growing at a normal pace. Most expectant mothers, as part of their antenatal care, are offered a scan at around 20 weeks of pregnancy to determine any birth defects in the foetus. Women who used labetalol in the later stages of pregnancy should ensure appropriate medical intervention and support if the baby shows any signs of adverse effects of ‘beta-blocker’ exposure.
Labetalol and pregnancy are not at all uncommon. One must also know that every pregnancy is unique. It is suggested to all expectant mothers to keep a record of all the medication undertaken during pregnancy in a handheld maternity record so that the doctor can see the medical history of the patient at a glance.

Does Your Baby Need a Play Gym? These 4 Reasons Are Too Good To Ignore!
Why would a baby need a gym? Is this one of those fashionable trends that are out to get poor unsuspecting mothers to sign up or is there some real substance behind baby-gyms? Find out why it may be a good idea to get a baby play gym now!
Physical exercise is essential for babies. Baby play gyms are important activity tools that keep your baby occupied in a variety of ways. They help your little one grow and develop in the years to come.
What Is A Baby Play Gym?
Before you start imagining rooms with machines for exercise, baby play gyms do not resemble adult gym or workout rooms at all! A baby play gym is a soft mat with two arches on either side, from which you can dangle toys overhead. Some gyms have lights, mirrors, baby pianos or tummy pillows to engage your baby in a variety of activities.
Benefits of Using A Baby Play Gym
Getting your baby to use a baby play gym may be the wisest choice you make. They have major developmental benefits for your baby such as:
1. Enhances His Motor Skills
Babies develop motor skills when they use baby play gyms. The toys that dangle from the arches of a baby gym encourage the baby to reach out and grasp them. Also, the baby starts kicking his legs when he is visually attracted to the toys, or the mirrors that reflect their faces, or the sounds that come from the baby piano. Reaching, kicking and grasping help in muscle development around the legs, arms, neck and stomach.
2. Improves His Hand Eye Coordination
Baby gyms also help in hand-eye coordination that helps the baby focus on the object and bring together both hands at the mid-line of the body. Continuous use of a baby gym will improve this reflex and help them develop the fine motor skills that are required for overall development. ||
3. Boosts His Cognitive Development
The hanging toys from the gym are specifically designed to improve the imagination of babies. Sounds, shapes, colours and textures stimulate mental and cognitive development in babies. Regular usage will help the baby recognize different colours, patterns and textures. Some gyms have mirrors attached to them which make the baby see his own face and recognize himself. Baby play gyms speed up the baby’s self-discovery and mental development as compared to those babies who do not use them.
4. Develops His Visual and Sensory Skills
As babies reach out to grab toys, they also learn to focus on objects thereby improving their visual perception. The sense of vision is stimulated and encouraged with regular use of baby play gyms. Although the baby’s vision is blurred at birth, continuous usage from birth till 6 months will see a remarkable improvement in the baby’s visual perception and coordination. Baby play gyms also have mirrors and sounds such as piano keys attached. These help improve self-awareness and sensory stimulation to sound and touch.
Are Play Gyms Safe?
As a parent, you may be concerned about the safety of your baby while using a play gym. However, be rest assured. Baby play gyms are designed especially for babies and are completely safe and fun. They are made with soft mats below that are cushioned and will not cause the slightest injury to even the youngest of infants.
There are plenty of varieties of baby play gyms available in the market. So go ahead, chose a good baby play gym that has a lot to offer to your baby! Go here to check out a myriad of cute, colorful and economical play gyms that your baby won't get enough of!

A Winter Travel Essentials Checklist - 7 Things You Shouldn't Forget to Pack
Whether it is to escape the cold and go to a warmer place or to head to a place that is cold enough to give you an excuse to use your sweaters, travelling in winter is a good idea. Winter breaks present the perfect opportunity to take a mini vacation, during which to indulge in good food, good wine, and shopping (since everything is on sale on account of Christmas and New Year). However, if you’re not careful, common winter ailments can ruin your perfect travel plans.
Pack These 7 Things for Winter Getaways
As a cautious parent on the lookout for the family’s needs, you will surely pack the regular things while going on a trip: extra clothes, important documents, emergency contacts, an elaborate first-aid kit, and all that jazz. However, there are some items you might want to consider adding to your luggage, that will especially guard your family against the winter.
Consider these as not just things to pack, but clever travel hacks for the winter. Ready? Here we go!
1. Anti-allergen and Decongestant
Winters bring on a lot of allergies in a lot of people. The source of these allergies is commonly pollen in the air. However, even those people who are allergic to dust might come down with allergic rhinitis in winter, because we tend to spend a lot of time indoors – and where there are carpets, mattresses and pets, there will also be dust! One of the most common symptoms of an allergy is either a runny or a congested nose. So make sure you carry both – an anti-allergen as well as a decongestant
2. Thermos Flask
Winters bring on dryness and cold (duh!), making it very important to look after our hydration. Of course you can get order whatever you want to your hotel room. But what about when you step out or are on the go? It is best to carry a thermos flask when taking a winter vacation. You can fill it up with your favourite hot drink – be it coffee, hot chocolate, or green tea. It’s best to carry one for each family member. Top it up at restaurants, cafes, or when you visit people.
3. Palm Sugar and Lozenges
Another thing that the dry and cold weather in winter brings on is a dry cough. Palm sugar is best to keep a dry cough away. In fact, it is one of the things you should have handy for winter, irrespective of whether you are travelling or not. Pop a piece before stepping out of the hotel room or house. However, should you start noticing symptoms of the onset of a dry cough (such as excessive thirst, dryness in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, etc.), lozenges would be an effective and inexpensive way to bring the situation under control before it becomes a full-fledged cough.
4. Instant Chicken Soup
You must have noticed how winters make you extra hungry. However, you can’t be constantly stuffing yourself! One light yet filling snack at such times is chicken soup. In winters, however, it has several additional benefits; chicken soup can help boost immunity, it can help you stay warm, and it is one of those ‘feel good’ foods that are perfect for when the temperature drops. Also, you can make it on the go; all you need to do is dunk contents in a flask, and pour hot water!
5. Layering Essentials
Of course, you are going to pack sweaters and jackets, gloves and mittens, socks and thermal wear, and closed-toe footwear, depending on where you are going for your winter vacation. However, an important tip to remember here is to pack clothes that you can easily layer-up or layer-down. Instead of carrying one thick coat, break it up into three layers: a base layer of a thin t-shirt, an intermediate level of a warm sweatshirt or sweater, and a top layer of a thick jacket. Follow the same principle for bottoms. You are not going to spend all your time outdoors; the thinner layers will help you stay adequately warm indoors.
6. Headgear
One of the common reasons for falling ill in winter is exposing the head to the cold winter temperature. Even if you don’t come down with a cold, you may find yourself complaining of a headache. Appropriate headgear can keep such nagging problems away. A woollen cap is your best friend when travelling during winter. However, consider the humble scarf too; the additional benefit you will get with a scarf is that it will also cover your ears. Plus, you can pack multiple scarves to go with each of your outfits!
7. Travel Packs of Lotions and Lip Balm
The important thing to remember when packing lotion and lip balm is to pack travel-sized bottles along with the big bottle. You will sufficiently dab lotion and apply lip balm on your lips upon having a bath, no doubt. But even as you step out to enjoy and have some winter-fun, you may want to re-apply the lotion – especially to your hands (which will get dry as a result of frequent washing). You will also definitely want to reapply the lip balm. So make sure everyone is carrying their own little bottle of lotion and their own chapstick.
Armed with these 7 must-haves, you are ready to conquer any winter adventure! Bon voyage!

Does “Mother-ese” Speed Up or Delay Verbal Development?
You cannot help but want to coo back at your baby and indulge in some baby-talk - and that's normal! Your baby is probably the only person in the world you can be so silly with and they'll still think you are the most awesome person in the universe. But is your baby-talk or 'mother-ese' causing a slowing down of your baby's verbal development?
Baby talk is also referred to as mother-ese and is usually developed with a cooing pattern which is different from normal adult speech. Studies have shown that infants actually prefer to listen to this type of speech rather than standard adult directed speech. Such baby talk is not only important in creating an emotional bond between parents and the child, but it is also important in stimulating the language development centre in the brain.
Why Is Mother-ese an Important Aspect of Language Development?
There are lot of benefits of talking to an infant using motherese as a language pattern. Perhaps the most important benefit is that it stimulates the development of language in children. It has been proven that children who learn the fastest are those who receive most acknowledgement in a loving way from parents or caregivers. While talking to the baby using mother-ese, special attention and focus should be given to the child’s response.
Focusing on language development of your child is both about the quantity and quality of the words parents speak. It is important to note that this comes naturally to parents when they perceive babies as whole people – or able communicators ready to be informed about the happenings in their lives – and in turn share their thoughts and feelings. Comprehending this simple truth and interacting naturally will help the language development of your child exponentially.
So yes, Motherese definitely helps (not hurts) your baby! Here are a few tips to stimulate the language development of your child:
1. Use Your Authentic Voice
It is important to understand the difference between motherese and gibberish baby talk. Motherese means talking to your child in a way in which the words are stretched and intonated in a musical way. For e.g. instead of saying “good morning” we can say “gooouud morningggg”! It is extremely important to use your authentic tone and voice while just stretching the words a little bit.
2. Read Books and Tell Stories Responsively
Reading books responsively means reading with animated tones and actions. Let the baby stay on one page for five minutes and take in the pictures and words on the page while you are reading the story.
3. Relax, Be Patient and Do Not Test Your Child
When parents are worried or anxious, babies are able to sense those feelings. It is very important to create a conducive environment for your baby’s learning by feeling relaxed and being patient. What children need most of all to be able to start talking is the trust of parents and caregivers. When we test our children, we are not trusting them. As parents we are excited to test what our children have learnt and also show it to other family members. However, do remember that performance pressure makes toddlers more likely to clam up.
These strategies mentioned above help you engage with your baby and also encourage the language development of your child. Through practice, infants are able to determine who the positive and encouraging caregivers in their development are. When mother-ese is accepted and enjoyed by your child it expedites their language and cognitive development greatly. Read more

Q. my baby girl is crying because of gas. can please tell how to relieve gas?
Dr Vandan H Kumar
Paediatrician
A. from your history it appears that your child is having colic pain due to gas in abdomen
in colic pain you can give anti colic medicines like colicaid 0.5 ml to the child and this medicine can be given maximum three or four times per day but to prevent this problem kindly do regular burping for 15 to 20 minutes.d
do not kee ep the child back on the bed after one burping (all gas is not removed with one burping)
during the cdolic episode you can do stomach massage and limb cycling movements and if the child is more than 2 months of age you can give tummy time also.
advisable to learn more about it from your doctor.

Dr Vandan H Kumar

A. the sleeping pattern of the child changes from time to time and will improve with increasing age of the child. if the growth and weight gain of the child is proper along with proper urine stool then there is no need to worry regarding the sleeping pattern.
you have to just see that the child is not having any disturbance during the sleep because it can occur due to gas as well as due to digestion problem. aldso see for the comfort of the child and see the bedding on which the child is sleeping.
try to prevent temperature variations around the child that is from hot to cold and cold to hot weather because that also can cause disturbance in the sleep. d
