When and How to Teach Numbers to Kindergarten
Understanding numbers is an important skill that kindergartners need to master. Children encounter and observe various concepts of mathematics since infancy, such as quantity comparison and pattern recognition. Once children reach preschool age, you can start teaching them numbers in a fun and interactive way.
Teaching numbers to children is simple. Parents can motivate them to relate numbers with activities they perform on a daily basis. However, they will only begin to truly comprehend the meaning of numbers until they are around five years old.
When to Teach Numbers to a Child?
It is a great idea to start introducing numbers to your child after she turns one. You can start with number rhymes, like ‘One, Two, Buckle My Shoe’, ‘Ten Green Bottles,’ or 1,2,3,4,5, Once I caught a fish alive’. You can also point out simple objects or things they encounter in their daily lives, such as one apple, two dogs, three chocolates, and so on. Here are some tips that will help you teach numbers to preschoolers:
1. Teach Counting with Number Rhymes
Using rhymes and songs is a fun way of learning numbers for kindergartners. You can use number songs and rhymes like ‘10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed’, ‘This Old Man - He played One’, ‘The Ants Are Marching One by One Hurrah,’ etc. to teach kids about numbers in an immensely enjoyable manner. Show the numbers on your fingers as you sing together with your child so that the child knows that a particular number relates to that many fingers.
2. Incorporate Numbers into Daily Tasks
Use numbers in daily tasks that your child does with you. For example, ask your child to help set the table and place one fork or two spoons with each plate. You could also get her to count peas or apples, thus connecting numbers with quantities. Another idea is that you can encourage her to count her toys as they help you put them away after playing.
3. Play Number Games with a Group of Kids
Kids learn better when they are playing with each other. You can encourage some healthy competition in the group to motivate them, too. Get them to sit in a circle and take turns counting numbers.
4. Write Down Numbers and Make the Child Draw that Quantity
Write down numbers in a drawing book and have your child draw something that denotes that quantity. For example, write 3 and ask her to draw three flowers. For 4, you could ask the child to draw four ice cream cones. You can also do the opposite of this by drawing several quantities of an object and asking your child to count them and tell you the number.
5. Point Out Numbers on Ad Boards and Vehicles
When you go out with your child, you can point out numbers on ad boards or vehicles and thus help her recognise the numbers by sight. This will be helpful later on when your child begins writing numbers.
6. Teach the Order of Numbers with Connect the Dots
This game teaches kids the order of numbers. Use a chalkboard to form a shape with numbered dots. Next, help your child connect the dots to draw that shape. For example, you could use 8 dots to make an octagon shape and help your child draw an octagon. You can also buy connect-the-dots books, which have numerous drawings outlined by numbered dots. These dots need to be connected sequentially to draw the shape. Once the shape is drawn, let your child colour the shape to make the game more fun.
7. Count Fingers and Toes
Counting fingers and toes is a great way to introduce pre-schoolers to numbers. You could make them count the fingers on each hand and ask them to compare the number of fingers on each hand. You can also ask them how many big toes they have or how many little fingers they have.
8. Make and Use Flash Cards
Make flash cards with numbers zero to nine and use these to play various number games with your child. For example, you could place the numbers in a random order and help your child arrange them in the correct sequence.
Children are quick learners, and they can grasp concepts with ease. Introducing numbers to kindergartners in a fun way will help them understand numbers easily. Pre-schoolers tend to memorise numbers. However, they will gradually begin to understand what the numbers mean when you relate the quantity of everyday objects to the numbers. But why do babies wake up early in the morning and what can be done to rectify the problem?
What Does Waking Up Early Mean?
Most babies and toddlers wake up between six and eight in the morning. If you find that your baby’s time of waking up is slowly getting earlier, you may have a problem on your hands that could be caused due to many different factors.
Reasons Why Your Child Is Waking Up Too Early
Here are a few reasons for early morning waking in babies, and a few suggestions about what to do about it.
1. Teething
Waking up early is one of the first sleep-related symptoms of teething.
What To Do
When your little one is awake, try to get her teething objects so to alleviate the pain. A washcloth that has been frozen can work wonders as well. During sleep time, try Ibuprofen or Tylenol so that your baby will be able to sleep for long hours.
2. Environmental Factors
For both babies and adults alike, the early morning hours of sleep are much lighter and so environmental factors such as noise from outside, songs of the birds, traffic or sunlight coming in through the window, may result in your toddler getting up too early.
What To Do
If your baby is disturbed by noise, then your best bet is to try and buffer any sound that comes in by using a fan, a radio, or a machine to play monotonous music all through the night. If sunlight is the problem, invest in some thick curtains that will keep the sunlight out until opened, or you can always opt for covering the window screen with newspapers or blackout blinds.
3. Insufficient Naps
Children under the age of three need to take naps during the day in addition to their nightly sleep to get the full amount of sleep required. If they miss out on any naps or take too many, it could lead to them waking up early.
What To Do
Try to get your little one to take longer naps during the day, but if that is not possible, you should try to put her to bed an hour early every night so that she can make up for the lost sleep.
4. Hunger
If your baby is under nine months of age and is still being breastfed, then your baby will need to be fed at night. Generally, after four months of age, a baby will need to eat once or twice during the night but not more than that. If your baby is hungry, she may wake up and cry.
What To Do
If your baby wakes up hungry, it could be that she has developed an association with breastfeeding and sleep. You can break the habit by introducing a bottle to her.

5. Overtiredness
A consistent bedtime routine works well for children, but often parents wait to put them to bed until they see the child yawning or rubbing their eyes. This can lead to their little one being overtired. The child may sleep as soon as you put her to bed but she may wake up in between or early in the morning.
What To Do
Most infants and toddlers sleep between 6 pm and 7 pm. But if you make your little one sleep before that she will get enough sleep. If she wakes up earlier, you can always treat it as a night awakening and tell her it is still night and that it is still sleep-time.
6. Stress
Stress makes a child work harder to function, which causes the body to release stress hormones like Cortisol. Cortisol makes babies cranky and over-alert, causing them to wake frequently or earlier than usual.
What To Do
Try to find out what is causing the stress to your baby. Sometimes, a change in the routine such as a mother going back to work may child to stress. Pay attention to your child when you are around her, particularly, when she is awake and make her sleep an hour earlier.
7. Nap Transitions
Waking up early is normal during the time of nap transitions as your baby will be getting less sleep during the day.
What To Do
Try to make small changes to your baby’s nap time every day over a period of a week or ten days. Push the morning nap to later, such as 11 or 11:30 and then eventually to twelve at noon. If she wakes up after only an hour but does not seem well rested, soothe her back to sleep and if this doesn’t work, you can always make her sleep early in the evening, i.e. around 7 pm.
8. New Milestones
Sometimes your baby may wake up early and practice her physical or cognitive skills, such as sitting up on her own or playing with one of the toys in her crib.

Do not interrupt or respond to your baby as long as she is not fussing. This should pass naturally in one or two weeks.

Generally, if your baby wakes up by or after 6 am in the morning and is happy and full of energy, your baby does not have a sleeping problem. This is age appropriate when it comes to the development of your baby if she is getting undisturbed sleep at night and the proper amount of nap time during the day.
What If Your Child is Waking Up Within 30 Minutes of Desired Wake Up Time - Should You Worry?
Some babies tend to wake up half an hour before their desired wake up time and if you have a two-year-old waking up too early you may be dealing with a case where it is time to either shorten the nap time or drop one of the naps from your baby’s schedule as she may be getting too much sleep. However, no two children are the same and some children may prefer to have long naps. सुबह-सुबह! अरे सुनते हो अजय! तुम स्कूल में ठीक से छोड़ आए न मनिषा को? वार्षिक परीक्षा है 12वीं की।
क्यों चिंता करती हो आभा? "अब अपनी बेटी बड़ी हो गई है, उस पर भरोसा रखो। वह स्वयं भी अपना सही-गलत समझती है।"
नहीं जी। "ऐसी बात नहीं है, मुझे अपनी बेटी पर पूर्ण रूप से भरोसा है।" वर्तमान में आस-पड़ोस के माहौल को देखकर थोड़ी बेचैनी होती है।
अभी कल ही की तो बात है| मनिषा बता रही थी कि उसकी सहेली सुषमा की बड़ी बहन सुरेखा को मुंबई से एक दिनेश नामक लड़का, अपने माता-पिता के साथ विवाह के लिये देखने आया| जो अमेरिका में एक मल्टीनेशनल कंपनी में मैनेजर है। "वर और वधु पक्ष की सारी बाते निश्चित होने के बाद तय हुआ कि सुरेखा और दिनेश शादी से पूर्व 6 महिने तक लिवइन-रिलेशनशिप में रहेंगे|" और उसके बाद उनका धूमधाम से विवाह रचाया जाएगा। अब आप ही बताईए, बेचारी सुरेखा क्या जाने लिवइन रिलेशनशनशिप और दिनेश ने बाद में उसे धोखा दे दिया तो?
बदलते वक्त के साथ समाज और रिश्तों की परिभाषा भी बदल गई है। खासकर बड़े शहरों में वह भी विदेशों में चल रही इस प्रक्रिया के अनुसार यहाँ पर शुरू करने में लगे है। "विवाह में बंधने वाले दुल्हा-दुल्हन का पवित्र रिश्ता तो आजकल की युवा पीढ़ी के लिए महज एक हँसी -मजाक या गुड्डे-गुडि़यों का खेल ही रह गया है।"
"ऐसा नहीं है आभा, हम सभी को अपनी सोच सकारात्मक रखने की बहुत जरूरत है।" ठीक है युवा पीढ़ी का विवाह के संबंध में विदेशों के रिवाजों की देखा-देखी बदल गया हो| और अभी हाल ही में सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने लिव इन संबंधों को स्वीकृति दे दी हो, परंतु हाँ वर-वधु के साथ-साथ उनके माता-पिता को भी इसके निर्धारित नियमों को पहले समझना अति-आवश्यक है| ताकि हमारी भारतीय संस्कृति के अनुसार विवाह एक पवित्र रिश्ता जिंदगी भर निभाने में सरलता हो सके।
"नहीं अजय ऐसी बात नहीं है| मैं भी सकारात्मक ही सोचती हूँ पर सुरेखा की पूर्व की कहानी शायद आप जानते नहीं है| पहले भी उसके साथ कुछ ऐसा घटित हो चुका है जो नहीं होना चाहिये था।"
“आभा कुछ बताओगी भी” कि ऐसे ही विचार व्यक्त करते रहेंगे हम लोग? लेकिन रूको अभी, आज मनिषा की आखिरी परीक्षा है, मैं उसे लेकर आता हूँ। "फिर अपन सब एक साथ तुम्हारे हाथों से बने स्वादिष्ट भोजन का आनंद भी लेंगे और साथ ही सुरेखा की कहानी भी सुनेंगे ताकि मनिषा भी सुने।"
"मेरा तो मानना है आभा, कि हमारे जैसे हर माता-पिता जिनके बच्चे 12वीं कक्षा में पहुँचे हों, और चाहे वह बेटा हो या बेटी| इस विषय पर परिवार में उनके साथ खुलकर चर्चा होनी चाहिये ताकि जब वे कॉलेज की पायदान पर पहुचेंगे तब उन्हें अपना हर कदम, भला-बुरा सोच-समझकर उठाने में सहायता मिलेगी।"
फिर अजय मनिषा को लेकर आता है और सभी साथ में भोजन करते हैं। चलो मनिषा बेटी अपना भोजन भी हो गया है, अब तुम्हारी मम्मी कहानी सुनाएँगी जो तुम्हें भी शायद पता नहीं है।
हाँ, मम्मी सुनाओं न, मै भी सुनने के इच्छुक हूँ।
तो सुनो बेटी तुमने अपनी सहेली सुषमा की बड़ी बहन सुरेखा के बारे में बताया था न? वह तुमने अभी की स्थिति बताई, पहले उस बेचारी पर क्या बीती यह किसी को भी ठीक से मालूम नहीं है, "वह तो एक समाज सेवी संस्थान में जहाँ मैं बीच-बीच में जाती रहती हूँ। वहाँ पुरानी सहेली ज्योती मिल गई, सो उसने बताया।"
सुरेखा जो परिवार की बड़ी बेटी थी और घर में दादी से लेकर सभी रिश्तेदार उसकी शादी के बारे में ही हमेशा पूछापाछी करते| दिन-ब-दिन उम्र भी होती जा रही थी न उसकी, पर सुरेखा ने कला विषय के साथ एम.ए. की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की थी| और वह अपने पैरों पर खड़े होना चाहती थी| शादी के बारे में उसका दूर-दूर तक कोई विचार भी नहीं था। "उसके विचारों से सहमत होकर माता-पिता ने भी उसका हमेशा की तरह आगे बढ़ने में साथ दिया।" सुरेखा को कलाकृति संस्थान से जुड़ी और उसको ऐसे ही अभ्यास करते-करते छोटे-छोटे सीरियल्स एवं नाटकों में भाग लेने का अवसर मिलने लगा| और मुंबई में उसके साथियों की अच्छी-खासी मंडली बन गई। "अब तो सुरेखा के वारे ही न्यारे हो गए और सब जगह से कार्यक्रम प्रस्तुत करने के लिये बुलावा भी आने लगा।"
"ऐसे ही दिन गुजरते गए, सुषमा छोटी थी सुरेखा से जो हमारी मनिषा संग एक स्कूल में पढ़ती है| पर सुरेखा बड़ी होने के कारण माता-पिता को दिन-ब-दिन उसकी शादी की चिंता सताए जा रही थी| पिताजी का रिटायरमेंट भी पास में था।" खैर! माता-पिता के सोचने से क्या फर्क पड़ता है, होता वही है जो किस्मत में लिखा होता है।
अजय समझ में नहीं आता शादी का यह पवित्र रिश्ता जो पति-पत्नि को जिंदगी भर साथ निभाना होता है, जैसे कि हर परिस्थिति में हम दोनों निभा रहे हैं। पता नहीं आजकल इसको हँसी-खेल क्यों समझा जाता है?
अब सुरेखा का सपना सच हो चला था, उसे मनपसंद काम जो चुना था| पर घर में दादी पिताजी को सुरेखा की शादी करने हेतु बहुत उकसा रही थी। "दादी और माता-पिता को सोचना चाहिए था, शादी जैसा पवित्र बंधन जिसकी बागडोर सिर्फ विश्वास पर टिकी होती है, बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे सुरेखा का रिश्ता पक्का कर दिया।"
सुरेखा अपने काम से जब घर आई, तो उसकी माँ ने बताया कि समीप के रिश्तेदार ही हैं समधि जी। इकलौता लड़का है और उनका मुंबई में ही कपड़ों का व्यवसाय है| जो बेटा और पिता मिलकर करते हैं, अच्छा-खासा मुनाफा हो जाता है। "लड़के का नाम राजेश है बेटी, तुमको और कुछ पूछना हो तो अपने पिताजी से पूछ लेना।"
सुरेखा ने दूसरे ही दिन अपने पिता से राजेश से एक बार मिलने की इच्छा जताई तो पिता ने कहा कि अपनी रिश्तेदारी में ही है और देखने-दिखाने की क्या जरूरत? दादी ने हाँ कर दी है और मैं कुछ सुनना नहीं चाहता बेटी और "फिर उम्र भी तो निकली जा रही न तुम्हारी और हाँ उन्होंने कहा है कि तुम्हें अब काम करने की जरूरत भी नहीं है।"
"यह सुनकर सुरेखा क्या बोलती, अपने माता-पिता और दादी की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए बिना जाने-पहचाने व्यक्ति से सिर्फ कि वे रिश्तेदारी में करके शादी के लिए हाँ कर दी और करती भी क्या बेचारी। बार-बार के शादी के तानों से तंग आ चुकी थी सो हाँ कर दी।"
फिर क्या था, चट मग्नि पट ब्याह भी संपन्न हो गया| सुषमा छोटी थी, इतनी समझ नहीं थी उसको, पर सुरेखा विदाई के समय बहुत रोई, अपने माता-पिता से मिलकर। "वे ही तो उसके जीवन के पालनहार और सर्वस्व हैं।"
सास-ससुर एवं राजेश संग आ गई ससुराल सुरेखा, उसे कुछ मालुम ही नहीं था| अपनी ससुराल के बारे में और न ही माता-पिता ने भी कुछ पूछताछ करने की जरूरत समझी। "शादी जैसा पवित्र रिश्ता रिश्तेदारी में ही है और बिल्कुल आँखे बंद करके विश्वास के साथ कर दिया।" पर सुरेखा का संघर्ष अभी यही खत्म नहीं हुआ था| ससुराल में नई-नवेली बहु की न कोई रस्म और न ही कोई रिवाज, मन ही मन सोच रही सुरेखा यह कैसा विवाह हुआ भला?
"विवाह के पहले दिन सासुमाँ बोली, राजेश किसी काम से गया है करके और रोज बेचारी राह देखे और राजेश रात को घर में रहता ही नहीं।" दिन भर अपने व्यवसाय में व्यस्त और रात में ऐसा, अब तो सुरेखा को नई ही तस्वीर देखने को मिली ससुराल में, और तो और उसका काम भी छुड़वा दिया। अब वह करे तो क्या करे, विवाह जैसे पवित्र बंधन में जो दो दिलों के पवित्र रिश्तों के साथ ही दो परिवारों के मधुर रिश्तों को बनाए रखता है| सुरेखा के दुल्हन के रूप में देखे हुए सपने एक पल में धराशाई होते नज़र आने लगे।
अब वह करे तो क्या करें? माता-पिता और दादी से भी बोल नहीं सकती थी। "फिर उसने ठान लिया कि राजेश का राज जानकर ही रहेगी, आखिर उसने फिर शादी की ही क्यों मुझसे?" इतने में क्या देखती है सुरेखा कि रात को 12 बजे राजेश शराब के नशे में धूत होकर किसी लड़की के साथ घर आया, अब तो सुरेखा के होश उड़ गए। "राजेश भी सुरेखा को कुछ गलत बातें बोलने लगा, अब तो सुरेखा रोज ही इस तरह से जुल्म बर्दाश्त करने लगी। "आखिर एक दिन सास-ससुर से हिम्मत करके पूछ ही लिया कि अपने अय्याश बेटे के साथ मेरी शादी क्यों रचाई? और इस पवित्र रिश्ते का महत्व नहीं समझा आप लोगों ने। "आप लोगों को क्या लगा, शादी जो है गुड्डे-गुडि़यों का खेल या कोई हँसी-मजाक?"
सास-ससुर बोले अरे बेटी सब्र रखो, थोड़े दिनों में सब ठीक हो जाएगा। हम थोड़े ही आए थे, यह रिश्ता लेकर, वो तो तुम्हारे पिताजी ने पूछा तो हमने हाँ कर दी और राजेश से भी नहीं पूछा इस रिश्ते के बारे में।
सुरेखा सिसक-सिसककर रोने लगी और बोली अरे माँजी ये तो सरासर धोखा है और आप लोगों ने पिताजी से जैसा चाहा वैसा ही विवाह संपन्न कराया उन्होंने, "फिर आपको राजेश से पूछ लेना चाहिए था पहले।" अभी भी आप अपने बेटे को कुछ भी समझा नहीं रहे हैं, "आखिर आपको मेरी जिंदगी बरबाद करके क्या मिला?"
"फिर राजेश से बात की, तो वह बोला कि मैं तो ऐसे ही जिंदगी बसर करुँगा, कोई ज़ोर-जबरदस्ती है क्या?" सुरेखा से कहा कि तुम्हे जो करना है वह कर लो, तुम मेरी तरफ से आज़ाद हो। वह तो अच्छा हुआ था कि सुरेखा ने अपना काम पूरी तरह से बंद नहीं किया था| "सो अपने साथियों संग पुन: काम शुरू कर दिया ताकि मन लगा रहे और माता-पिता को अभी कुछ भी नहीं बताया।" उसने सोचा कि शायद कोई राह निकल आए और थोड़ा समय भी लिया सोच-विचार करने के लिए। पर जब एक दिन सारी हदें पार कर दी राजेश ने तो "इसने अपना ससुराल छोड़कर हमारी समाज-सेवी संस्था में शरण ली, माता-पिता के पास नहीं गई, बहुत नाराज़ थी उनसे और फिर वे उसकी बात सुनते नहीं, क्योंकि पहले भी नहीं सुनी, इस तरह से विश्वास टूटता है रिश्तों में जो सबको बनाए रखना अनिवार्य है।"
समाज-सेवी संस्था ने उसको राजेश से तलाक लेने संबंधी सहायता प्रदान की और सारी औपचारिकताएँ पूर्ण करते हुए सुरेखा के माता-पिता को भी बुलाया। वस्तु-स्थिति से अवगत कराया और कहा देखिए व सोचिए, "आज आपने बेटी सुरेखा का भविष्य संवारा है या बिगाड़ा है।" उसकी शादी का फैसला बिना सोचे-समझे और "सुरेखा से बिना कुछ पुछे किये जाने का अंजाम देख लिया आप लोगों ने।"
अब आपसे विनती कर रहे हैं कि उसकी जिंदगी उसे स्वतंत्र जीने दिजीये और "शादी जैसे पवित्र रिश्तें में बांधने से पहले उसे विचार तो करने दिजीए।"
इसलिए अजय और मनिषा तुम्हें यह कहानी सुनना जरूरी थी, मैं चाहती हूं कि तुम भी अब 12वीं कक्षा में आ गई हो तो ऐसे ही जिंदगी के उतार-चढ़ावों की कहानी से तुम भी कुछ सिखोगी ही न? "आखिर मैं भी एक माँ हूँ और तुम मेरे और अजय के रिश्ते को बचपन से देख रही हो बेटी, साथ ही हमारी भारतीय संस्कृति निभाना भी नितांत आवश्यक है।"
इसलिये अजय वर्तमान में फिर से जो सुरेखा फैसला लेने जा रही है,अपनी जिंदगी का| मुझे लगता है कि युवा पीढ़ी के हिसाब से सही निर्णय हो भी सकता है| पर अपने माता-पिता और सुषमा के साथ अच्छी तरह से विचार-विमर्श कर ही लेना चाहिए| "साथ ही लिवइन रिलेशनशिप के नियमों को विस्तृत जानने के पश्चात ही कोई निर्णय ले| ताकि पूर्व की तरह बाद में पछताना न पड़ें।"
"हाँ भाई आभा तुम बिल्कुल सही फरमा रही हो , आखिर तुम समाज-सेवी संस्था से जुड़ने के पश्चात काफी जागरूक जो हों गई हो।"
यह सब सुनकर मनिषा बोली माँ तुम्हारी मिशन सक्सेसफुल रही है और मैं अब समझ गई हूँ। भविष्य में आपसे यह वादा करती हूँ कि शादी जैसे पवित्र रिश्ते के संबंध में आप दोनों की सहमति से ही राजीखुशी कोई भी निर्णय लूँगी|

What do you miss the most when you look back to your childhood? Mamma's cooking, playing at the park, monkeying around the house, and...school. It's odd how our school days take up a permanent place in our heart, even though a lot of us dread everything about it growing up! “Thank you so much for having me here for this memorable annual day, and if the kids at the back can't hear me, I'm sure they've been told not to scream and shout, they must be very well behaved. But if you can hear me guys, the wizards, the witches, the wonders of Oz - this is all about following that little yellow road!
It's about discovering your journey - it's about making friends along the way, respecting the teachers that teach you, because these are things that will never change in your life. You will move on from a school into life itself, and you will find new teachers, new guides, new friends, but the only that thing that you will remember - as this nostalgic feeling in the pit of your stomach - is who remembers your DNA? Who remembers what you're truly like? And that's what school life is about.

That was beautiful, Sush! Our team has already started reminiscing school days and making comparisons that go – we didn't have it as hard as our kids do! But even without the jazz, you can get back in shape through a fitness challenge.
Prerequisites for Taking Up a Fitness Challenge
While you may be all geared up and raring to go for a fitness challenge, do consider the following before taking one up:
1. Body Readiness
However simple your labor and birth were, you need to have your doctor’s okay to start exercising. Parts of your body may still be sore and intense activity may hurt you.
2. Time
This is possibly the greatest challenge of all! Newborns need to be fed, changed and held frequently, and you need to eat and rest too. If you have an older child, there is even less time.
3. Safety
If your baby is now crawling, you need to be extra cautious when exercising so that you don’t end up hurting your little explorer!
Home Workout Essentials
While it’s a great idea to have a treadmill or elliptical trainer at home, they aren’t essential to stay fit. Get only these basics for home workouts:
1. Yoga Mat
Make sure it’s padded enough to comfort your sore muscles and is non-slippery.
2. Dumbbells
If using these for the first time, get 1 kg dumbbells.
3. Resistance Bands
These are optional at the beginning, but sturdy ones with a good stretch are very helpful as you progress.
4. Swiss Ball
This is also optional but extremely recommended for strengthening your body with low risk of injury.
5. Supportive Shoes
Get a pair that offers good arch support and can tolerate some bounce.
Home Exercises for New Moms
When exercising, remember to do only as many intervals as time will allow; 10 minutes at a time is great. You can also build your own custom workout by mixing and matching moves and interspersing each with a 1 minute cardio interval. Here are some workouts to get you started:
1. Squat
Hold two dumbbells in both hands with feet hip-width apart and back straight.
Push your buttocks backwards, bending your knees so that they don’t extend beyond your toes.
As you bend, move your arms back towards your buttocks, without bending your elbows. Do 8-10 reps.
2. Bridge Pose
Lie on the floor, back straight, arms by your side and knees bent with feet flat on the floor.
Inhale and lift your buttocks off the floor, anchoring your feet and upper back.
Hold for a few seconds and lift your lower back, forming a bridge from your shoulders to your knees. Make sure you’re tightening the muscles in your buttocks and pelvis.
Hold for as long as you can and lower slowly to the floor.
3. Lunge
Hold two dumbbells in both hands, arms by your side and feet hip-width apart.
Take a step forward with one foot, bending both knees to a 90 degree angle, ensuring the knee doesn’t extend beyond the toes.
As you lunge, extend both arms forward, palms inwards. Hold for a moment and come back to starting position.
Repeat with the other leg, doing 8 reps in all.
4. Knee Lift
Tightly fix one end of a resistance band to a wall.
Stand on the right side of the band, holding it in the left hand, and place the other hand on the hip, keeping feet shoulder-width apart.
Do a bicep curl, bending the left elbow. Keep wrists firm as you feel the tension in your upper arm.
As you release the bicep curl, lift your right knee to hip level, maintaining balance.
5. Push Up
Place your palms firmly on the stability ball and assume a push up position with balls of the feet anchored on the floor in a straight line from head to heels.
Bend elbows outward, keeping abs tight and lowering your body to the floor, back straight.
Hold for a few seconds and return to starting position. Do 8-10 reps.
6. Chest Fly
Lie on the floor with dumbbells in both hands, arms extended outwards to both sides. Keep your back straight and eyes should always look straight ahead towards the ceiling.
Inhale and squeeze your chest muscles; extend both arms upwards. Keep your wrists straight.
Exhale and lower your arms down to the sides but don’t let them touch the floor. Do 8-10 reps.
These home workouts will definitely get you started on your way to fitness. Remember to not rush through the exercises and do only as many reps as are comfortable; there can be tension but not pain.
