Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) for Fertility Control
Breastfeeding is a natural way of providing nutrition to your baby. Breastfeeding your baby is recommended at least for the first six months of your baby’s life to build up his immunity and aid growth. While it has its list of benefits for your baby, you are not left out of the equation either.
Breastfeeding can also be an effective method of contraception for women. Although effective only for a limited period, you can explore the possibilities and suitability of this method for you.
What Is Lactational Amenorrhea Method?
Lactational amenorrhea method is a natural birth control method based on the biological fact that breastfeeding delays menstruation in women. This provides a window period for women to use breastfeeding as a form of birth control without any additional requirement for contraception.
The Effectiveness of LAM Contraception
When used properly, with all the conditions effectively fulfilled, LAM can be about 98% effective as a form of birth control. There is only a 2% chance that you can get pregnant with this method. If you do not want to take the risk, you can always use contraceptives that are compatible with breastfeeding like IUDs, diaphragms, etc.
How Does LAM Contraceptive Method Work?
Breastfeeding causes the body to release certain hormones. These hormones are also known to interfere with the process of ovulation, which essentially means that your ovaries will not release any eggs as long as you are breastfeeding your baby on a regular basis. And since no ovulation, it means no pregnancy.
Who Can Use This Method?
Lactational amenorrhea can be used by breastfeeding mothers who meet the following conditions.
Your menstrual bleeding has not commenced after delivery. The initial period of bleeding due to delivery is not considered as bleeding for this purpose.
You are breastfeeding your baby every day as and when the baby requires it.
Your baby is under six months of age.
When all three conditions are met successfully, you can use LAM as an effective method of birth control with less than 2% chance of pregnancy. However, when even one of the above conditions is not met, you will need to start an alternative method of contraception to prevent pregnancy.
Who Should Avoid LAM Method of Birth Control?
Women should avoid using LAM as a method of birth control under the following circumstances.
1. When Your Period Returns
After the postpartum bleeding of 56 days, if a woman has consecutive bleeding for two days or if she notices that her periods have returned, LAM is no longer advisable. This is because you will begin to ovulate and your fertility would have returned.
2. When the Baby is Fed Supplements or Baby Sleep Through the Night
The hormones that prevent ovulation are released due to the suckling of the breast by the baby. If you are not regularly breastfeeding your baby, then the chances of your baby suckling your breasts are reduced. This reduces the level of fertility suppressing hormones. If your baby is known to sleep through the night, then there will be long intervals between breastfeeding. Intervals of over four hours in the day and over six hours in the night can also render LAM ineffective.
3. When the Baby is Older Than 6 Months
If your baby is older than six months, he will be on the other nutritional foods too and hence will breastfeed less often. This can reduce the efficiency of LAM.
Certain medical conditions also rule out the possibility of LAM, which are as follows:
If your baby has specific infant metabolic disorders.
If you use drugs for mood alteration.
If you use reserpine, bromocriptine, cyclosporine, antimetabolites, anticoagulants, radioactive drugs, lithium, or ergotamine.
AIDS or HIV+ mothers may not be able to breastfeed as the virus can be transferred through milk. Hence LAM is not effective.
Active tuberculosis in the mother may pass on to the child when the infant is placed in direct contact with the mother.
How Can You Use LAM?
To effectively use LAM as your birth control method, you will need to begin breastfeeding your baby regularly. It is best to feed the baby on demand and at least about ten to twelve times every day in the first few weeks. In the subsequent months, you can breastfeed about eight to ten times every day.
THere should not be a gap of over 4 hours in the day and over 6 hours in the night between feedings. If your baby does not want to be fed eight to ten times a day, you will need to encourage him a little.
If you do not meet even one of the eligibility conditions for LAM, you will need to stop using it as your sole method of birth control and opt for alternative contraceptive methods.
Can This Method Be Used while Pumping and Bottle-Feeding?
No, LAM is not effective if you are pumping or bottle feeding. For LAM to work your baby needs to suckle your breast triggering the suppression of ovulation. This is not possible if you are pumping or bottle feeding. Certain doctors may even suggest you to stop allowing your baby to suckle on a pacifier in case it affects his desire to suckle your breasts.
Advantages
The advantages of using the LAM method of birth control are as follows:
It does not cost you anything.
It is simple to use and is rather a by-product of a task that you are already performing.
It rules out the need for any visits to a doctor or the use of an external drug.
It does not interfere with sexual intercourse as it uses no external method of contraception.
LAM may also help the woman return to her pre-pregnancy weight as breastfeeding is known to burn about 300 to 400 calories a day.
Disadvantages
There are certain disadvantages associated with LAM. Some of them include:
It is a temporary method of contraception and works best for only six months.
If you feed formula to your baby, it is not a feasible option for you.
If you are a working woman, you will not be able to breastfeed your baby frequently, rendering LAM ineffective.
Predicting when your ovaries will release an egg may be difficult. Hence, it is best to get a different method of contraception when you start menstruating again.
It does not protect you against any sexually transmitted diseases.
While prolonged lactation method can be used even after your baby turns six months, it may not be a practical option for all the mothers. Especially since babies need to get all the nutrition they can get from other food sources to develop properly. This will make it difficult to breastfeed them over 8 to 10 times every day.
However, LAM method is an effective form of birth control if you fulfil all the requirements. It is important to switch to a more reliable method of birth control to prevent pregnancy when even one of the conditions of LAM are not met.

1. Adhere to Park Rules
Amusement park accidents often occur because a kid tries to defy the park rules like trying to climb a fence, struggling to overload a particular ride, attempting stunts while on a ride, disregarding warnings from park authorities. Parents need to ensure that their kids follow all park safety rules particularly on dangerous rides like roller coasters. They may like to impress upon their kids that the posted cautionary signs and rules are not intended to cast a damper on the fun quotient but to confirm everyone’s safety at all times. For example, if a certain ride doesn’t allow kids below a specific age, you must conform to it instead of trying to get your way through. Similarly, in case, you think the safety restraints installed on a ride are not suited for your body type, do not attempt the ride.
2. Be Aware of Your Child’s Limitations
At amusements parks, most rides display cautioning signs indicating risks for people with an underlying condition. In case you feel that your kid’s health condition or an old injury (a back issue or a heart problem) may get worse by a ride, do avoid it. Please pay heed to all such warnings while bearing in mind your kid’s physical limitations.
3. Avoid Restricted Areas
There can be several reasons for an amusement park to close off or restrict a particular area. Mostly it is done keeping public safety in mind. Therefore, respect those restricted area signs and refrain from entering them merely to satisfy your curiosity. In case your kid tries to enter beyond a barricade or climb over a fence, he may be risking severe harm. If you happen to misplace a personal belonging like your mobile falling into a delimited area, do not try to retrieve it all by yourself. Inform the authorities and ask for their help.
4. Apply Ample Sunscreen
Be sure to lather your kid with sufficient sunscreen before taking him for an amusement park outing. The harsh sun rays can play havoc on his or her delicate skin leading to brutal sunburns even when exposed for a short duration of time. Reapply sunscreen every two hours to avert any likely harmful sunburn. Opting for a waterproof sunscreen may be a good idea. Also, keep your kid adequately hydrated to prevent heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Refrain from offering too many drinks laced with sugar additives as they can easily dehydrate young kids. Sipping plain water may be the best thing to do.
5. Strength in Numbers
Amusement parks are usually very crowded. There is always a possibility of losing a kid in the chaotic crowd. Therefore, the more adults for every kid, the better as it is then easy to keep a watchful eye on them. You can also note down your phone number on a slip and pin it on to your kid's clothes for emergencies. Even if your kid knows your phone number by heart, he may forget it out of nervousness in case he gets separated from you.
6. Clothing Choices
It may be a great idea to dress your kids in bright clothes which stand out from far in a crowd. You can also clothe your kids in matching outfits for ease of identification. You can also select some unique accessory like a cartoon backpack, quirky hats which can help you spot them easily.
7. Set a Drill
Formulate a plan regarding what to do in case the kids get separated. Upon reaching the amusement park, earmark safe places and designate meeting points like a parking booth, info kiosk, a prominent landmark that everyone can find easily. Explain to your kid to reach out to park security for help if he gets lost. Go over the set protocol several times so that he is clear about it.
8. Carry a First Aid Kit
Bring along a well-provided first aid kit to cater for emergencies. You will be grateful for having essential supplies on hand when handling kids instead of having to go looking for a medical station at the park.
9. Click a Picture
It may bear well to take a picture of your kid before leaving for the park. In the incidence of him getting lost or separated, the recent photo revealing how he is dressed and looks like may prove valuable in finding him. It is also possible that under stress you may not be able to recall all the crucial details. You may want to click more than one picture of his from different angles.
10. Escort Your Kid to the Restroom
Ensure that you accompany your kid to the restroom or for that matter everywhere. Some parents in the garb of giving autonomy to their child may allow them to go to the restroom alone. However, avoid doing so at an amusement park. Situations can quickly get out of hand and may take a turn for the worse. If entering the bathroom with your kid is not viable, then stand just outside the door.
It's natural to get carried away and denying something to your kid might seem difficult. But if you feel that a waterslide or a ride is not safe for your kid, then it is probably not! Pay attention to park safety concerns and be mindful of the safety tips. Go with your instincts which guide you to make the right decision.

Every time your baby waves her hand or kicks out, she is taking in information about how her body parts work in isolation, and together. While engaged in movements like rolling over, crawling or sucking, your baby is actually laying the foundation for her muscle development, which in future, will enable her to do multiple functions like spooning food into her mouth, kicking a ball, and so on.
2. Mental Development
Movement and play encourage your baby to use her mind and body together. It encourages her to think. For instance, a simple game of peek-a-boo will teach your baby that even if you disappear from her line of view, you are still there. Your baby learns how to solve problems using movements. For example, if she wants a toy which is out of her reach, she rolls over or crawls towards the toy and grabs it.
How can you Help your Baby Move and Play?
Movement and play are a natural instincts in your child’s development, and it need not involve expensive toys. Your presence and time is more valuable to your baby than any expensive gadget or toy.
Free Play on The Floor
Playing on the floor helps the baby to work on her posture that will later help her sit erect. It will also help her strengthen her muscles which will make activities like crawling, rolling over, etc. easier for her to do. Place your baby on a warm and comfortable mat and encourage her to move. For instance, you could show her, her favourite toy, and keep it just out of her reach so that she will be tempted to grab it. Never force movements that your child may not be ready for. Also, never leave a child unattended. For babies, lying on their tummies for shorter periods of time is beneficial as it helps to strengthen their backs. Most babies dislike this position, so help your baby by distracting her, or getting down to her level so that she feels comforted. You can keep some appropriate music in the background and move your hands in tune to the song, while making facial expressions to go with it. Show her colorful pictures and dangling toys to encourage her eye movement. This will also be a good exercise for her eyes. If your baby is above 6 months, you can give her toys of different sizes and textures (keeping in mind that they are age-appropriate) and encourage her to touch and feel them. This will encourage your baby to start using her fingers to hold objects. Help your baby to move her body, or to crawl by making interesting spaces like a cardboard tunnel for her to crawl through. Make sure you let the baby lift her body up, and eventually stand up. You can give her a hand to lift her body up if she wants to get something on the sofa, rather than physically lifting her. Make sure you have durable furniture for her to hold while she tries to lift her body up.
Use every opportunity possible to cuddle your baby and express your love. With even a simple peek-a-boo, your baby may kick out or wriggle her hands in response. Get involved in her play as much as possible and cherish her early play adventures. Read more

A. A lot of times normal delivery is actually seen in these cases also if the doctor is quick and the child cooperate then yes normal delivery is very much possible but some doctors don’t take a chance with the health of your child and so they normally suggest C-section so let’s see what’s your situation by the end when you are into your labour
