4 to 6 Months Old Baby Sleep
Getting adequate sleep is very crucial for a baby as all their vital organs and bodily functions require a good amount of rest in order to develop. As a parent, it is important that you ensure your child gets a good amount of sleep by observing their sleep patterns and ensuring they do not stray from a regular routine.
There are ways in which a parent can establish good baby sleeping habits and it will require some effort on your part to identify these patterns in your child.
Video: 4 to 6 Month Old Baby’s Sleep Pattern
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRUniNQct6o
What is My Baby's Sleep Pattern?
Every baby is different and you need to be sensitive to your baby's needs and patterns so that both of you get the rest that you deserve. The good thing is, you can try and teach your baby how to achieve a proper sleep pattern, which will take care of your baby's complete sleep requirements for the day and also give you much-needed rest.
A 4 month old baby sleep pattern can differ from a baby who is slightly older, say, a 10-11-month-old baby, so watch out for this.
By around 4-6 months, your baby will begin getting used to a regular sleep pattern. There are instances where some infants might require breast-feeding at night, but the frequency of this happening tends to reduce.
How Much Sleep Does My Baby Need? (4-6 Months)
Babies at this stage and age, generally sleep around twelve to sixteen hours a day. This includes the longer night-time sleep, with two naps in the day.
During The Day:
On an average, daytime sleep is around three to four hours, spread throughout the day. The need for naps during the day may reduce as your baby grows older and her sleep regularises.
During The Night:
At night, babies typically log around 10 hours of sleep. By the time babies are 6 months old, most of them sleep through the night for 9 hours, or maybe even longer.
How To Establish Good Baby Sleeping Habits
You can start any bedtime routine which works in order to get your baby to sleep. A few soothing activities and actions that lead to drowsiness always work. You can also give your baby a nice warm bath after which some singing or stories can signal the end of the day. These activities could be utilised as a bedtime ritual for many years, even as your child grows up.
In time, you would prefer that your baby falls asleep on their own. That would require you to complete any night-time routine you have before placing the baby inside the crib when they’re drowsy. If they do cry, it is better to move away for a few minutes and allow them to settle and fall asleep on their own. Resist the urge to cuddle them, especially if you want them to learn to fall asleep on their own. If the crying continues, you may consider holding the baby a bit longer..
Are There Any Sleep Problems At This Age?:
There are a few 4 to 6 month old baby sleep problems that need to be addressed if they are recurring, but with practice and time, your baby will start getting used to sleeping on their own. Babies can suffer from separation anxiety also, so make sure you watch out for the signs.
Baby Sleep and Development:
Having adequate sleep is necessary to prevent a baby from being cranky all the time and also keep them healthy and free from illnesses. As their bodies are still developing, getting enough sleep puts babies in a position of adequate rest, ensuring all body functions are carried out at optimum levels. Development of the immune system is an especially energy-consuming developmental milestone, alon with brain development. Both require the baby to be well-fed and well as well-rested.
Sleep Tips for 4 To 6 Months Old Baby:
Indeed sleeping is an important aspect of baby development. It is also one that is relatively easy to manage, as compared to having to deal with an illness or nutrition problems, etc.
Following are a few simple tips that can be followed to ensure your baby gets good sleep. :
If your 4 month old naps on their back, change this habit. Ensure that they nap on either side or their stomachs.
Provide them a surface that is firm and cover the mattress with a sheet that is snug.
Do not put other stuff – like pillows, soft-toys, etc. – inside the bassinet or crib. If required, place a baby monitor. It can be used as an effective sleep solutions for babies as you can try and listen for cues of your baby waking up in the middle of the night when you're not in the same room.
Avoid overheating of the room and of your baby too. Ensure the baby always feels cool (but not cold), and is sleeping in ambient environment. Try to avoid over bundling.
Try giving them a pacifier to suck on while asleep. If the baby seems unwilling to accept it however, then don’t try to force it on them.
Watch out for any hazards like cords, wires or ties that can affect the baby. Ensure that their sleeping environment is safe and sound.
What if baby wakes at night? Do not worry. This might be because they are distracted or need some pacifying before sleeping. Ensure that they are completely asleep when you place them back in the crib.
Signs of a Sleeping Baby
A few months post your baby's arrival, you will notice sleep patterns and signs emerging. A 5 month old baby sleeping a lot is a good sign as they need a lot of rest. As a parent, you just need to ensure that they are not sleeping more than the normal number of hours they do.
Often new mothers may have trouble identifying signs of sleepiness. Here are a few signs of a sleeping baby:
Their facial expressions can go from being relaxed to grimacing.
They can start looking away from you and stare into space.
They rub their eyes and ears.
Heavy yawning.
Clenching their fists
Some babies have their own idiosyncrasies when it comes to sleeping, so the faster you can identify them, the better.
Always ensure your babies get good sleep and have a peaceful early childhood. This is because the amount of nutrition and rest they get in their first few years plays a major role in their development later on.

Salt and Sugar for Babies - Reasons to Avoid Them
Salt and sugar are used as flavour enhancers in our food, but excessive consumption of both salt and sugar can lead to serious health problems in adults and children. According to health organisations worldwide, adults should limit salt consumption to ¾ and one teaspoon per day. Sugar consumption should be limited to 6 teaspoons a day for women and 9 per day for men. Salt and sugar should be avoided for babies as excessive consumption is harmful and can cause problems such as impaired kidney function, tooth decay, decreased immunity, etc.
What Is the Daily Requirement of Salt and Sugar in a Baby’s Diet?
According to various health organisations, infants should not be given any salt until six months of age. Their sodium needs are met by the salt contained in breast milk. Babies aged between 6 months to 1 year should be given no more than 1 gram of salt per day, which contains 0.4 grams of sodium. The salt intake of toddlers aged between 1 and 3 years should be limited to 2 grams per day and children aged 4 to 6 years should consume no more than 3 grams of salt per day.
Babies do not need added sugars or refined sugar in their diet. The sugar requirements of the baby can be met by foods rich in carbohydrates and other naturally sweet foods, such as fruits.
Why Should You Avoid Sugar and Salt in Your Infant’s Diet?
Here are the reasons why you should avoid including salt and refined sugar in your baby’s diet:
1. Affects Kidney Function
Excessive salt intake can impair kidney function as the infant’s kidneys cannot process and eliminate high levels of salt from the blood. This strains the kidneys and can cause kidney-related diseases at a later stage.
2. Causes Kidney Stones
Excess sodium from salt can also cause the body to excrete more calcium in the urine. This calcium can form kidney stones. Kidney stones cause symptoms such as severe pain in the body, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, burning sensation while urinating, and blood in the urine.
3. High Blood Pressure
Excess salt intake can cause high blood pressure or hypertension. Babies who consume too much salt can develop hypertension as adults.
4. The Danger of Dehydration
Babies who have excess salt in their bodies are in danger of dehydration, as salt causes the body to lose water in the form of urine and sweat. Infants will not be able to indicate that they are thirsty, and adults may not realise that they are dehydrated until serious symptoms show up. Dehydration can result in kidney stones, joint and muscle damage, constipation, and liver damage.
5. Brittle Bones
Too much salt consumption causes increased sodium levels in the body. This, in turn, causes excretion of too much calcium. Thus, the body loses calcium, which is essential for the development of strong bones. Calcium depletion can lead to a condition called osteoporosis which makes the bones thin and brittle.
6. Tooth Decay
Consuming excessive amounts of added sugars can cause painful cavities and tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth use sugar from foods to produce acids that damage the teeth.
7. Obesity
Too much sugar in the diet means more calories. Even in an active baby, this could result in a lot of unused calories which get converted to fat and stored in the body. Obesity or having excess body fat is very unhealthy for a baby.
8. Diabetes
Eating too much sugar can lead to type 2 diabetes later in life. Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.
9. Lethargy
High blood sugar levels can result in the overproduction of the hormone called insulin which regulates blood sugar levels. Too much insulin can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, leading to lethargy, inactivity, and tiredness in the baby.
10. Hyperactivity
Since sugar is absorbed into the blood very quickly, high sugar consumption causes the blood sugar levels to shoot up. This leads to higher adrenaline levels and causes hyperactivity in children.
11. Poor Dietary Habits
Consuming excess salt and sugar as a baby leads to a pattern of poor dietary choices later in life. This, in turn, causes lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
12. Rejecting Breast Milk
If babies begin to like the taste of salt and sugar, they may avoid or reject breast milk. This is detrimental to the growing baby, as breast milk contains several vital nutrients essential for the baby’s growth and development.
13. Will Not Know the Real Taste of Vegetables
If the baby’s food contains too much salt or sugar, it will mask the original taste of the vegetables. The baby will start disliking the taste of vegetables if it is not masked by too much salt or sugar.
Tips for Introducing Solid Foods to Your Baby
Introduce one food at a time so that you can easily spot allergic reactions in your baby. Wait for two-three days between offering different types of food.
Puree everything so that your baby can eat the food easily. As he grows older, you can give him solid food in small pieces but keep an eye out for foods like uncooked peas, firm fruits and vegetables, nuts, etc. as they can make him choke.
Avoid using silverware and use spoons made of plastic or silicone as they will be better for the baby’s tender gums.
Don’t try to overfeed the baby. When the baby stops enjoying the food or avoids eating, you should stop feeding him.
FAQs
Here are the answers to a few frequently asked questions about salt and sugar intake in babies:
1. How will your baby get sodium if you completely avoid salt?
The baby’s sodium needs are met by breast milk for the first six months. Apart from this, most foods naturally contain sodium. So the baby’s salt intake should be less than 1 gram per day for the first year.
2. How can you add flavour to the infant’s food without adding salt?
Foods can be made flavourful without the addition of salt. Spices such as cumin powder, asafoetida, cinnamon, and herbs like coriander and mint can flavour the food and enhance the taste. You can also flavour the food using onion and garlic. However, spices must be added in minute quantities, and new foods should be introduced slowly (1 tablespoon on the first day, two the next, and so on) to make sure there are no allergic reactions. Herbs must be thoroughly washed and finely chopped or minced. They should be introduced into the baby’s diet only after seven months of age.
3. What are the substitutes of sugar for baby food?
There are plenty of naturally sweet substances that can be used as sugar substitutes. These include any fruit puree, date syrup, and honey. However, date syrup and honey should not be given to infants below 1year of age.
4. Will my baby eat bland food without salt? What if he does not like it?
Adults cannot eat bland food without salt as they are used to eating food rich in a variety of flavours. A baby has never tasted salt and will therefore not feel that the food is bland. In case the baby does not seem to like the food, you can try to enhance the taste using flavour enhancing spices like cumin, cinnamon or asafoetida, herbs like mint or coriander, and garlic or onion.
5. When do I start adding salt and sugar in baby’s food?
You need not give a baby salt until one year of age. If you do want to introduce salt, limit it to less than 1 gram per day for babies older than six months. However, it is better to avoid salt for babies under one year of age. Giving sugar to infants less than one year of age is not recommended. Baby foods do not require added sugars. You can use natural sugar substitutes like fruit puree, date syrup or honey. Even fruit juices given to babies must be diluted to reduce the sugar content.
Salt and sugar can do more harm than good for babies. Hence, it is better to avoid them at least until the baby turns one year old. Processed foods should also not be given to babies as they contain high amounts of salt. Many commercial baby foods may also contain added sugars. Check the ingredients carefully to determine the salt and sugar content if you use commercial baby food. Keep your baby healthy by giving homemade food without added salt or sugar.

Shaken Baby Syndrome
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a severe internal injury to a child's head caused due to forceful or violent shaking. It results in permanent brain damage and at times can prove to be fatal. Usually, there are no apparent signs but at times the baby may vomit or show signs of irritability. In severe cases, complications like seizures, visual impairment, cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment may occur along with retinal bleeding.
What Is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Shaken Baby Syndrome is brain damage in a baby caused due to inflicted brain injury. It is a serious form of abuse and is also known as Abusive head trauma (AHT). Vigorously shaking a baby by parents or caregivers in anger or frustration may result in this type of injury.
How Common Is It In Babies?
No one can place an exact number on the babies suffering from SBS. It has been estimated that approximately around 1000 to 1500 such incident occurs in infants every year. It mostly occurs in infants between the age group of 3 months to 8 months and up to the age of 5 years. However, as the child grows older, his chances of SBS are less compared to a newborn or infant.
How Does It Happen Only To Babies?
A baby's head is large and heavy compared to the other parts of the body and the neck is weak. Thus when someone shakes him, his head and neck move vigorously which jerks the brain inside the skull causing it to bounce back and forth. This forceful and uncontrolled movement causes the brain to bruise, bleed and swell along with the retina.
Can Abusive Head Trauma Happen Accidentally While You Are Playing With The Child?
Regular methods of play like tossing the child in the air, bicycling with the baby, bouncing the baby on our knee cannot cause AHT. Even a fall from the couch or any high furniture will not cause it until it is a severe fall. Only forceful and violent back and forth shaking movement can cause it.
Who Is At Risk Of AHT?
Although AHT can happen till the age of 5, infants between the average ages of 3 to 8 months most often suffer from it. However, new born babies, between 6 to 8 weeks old, are more prone to it.
What Are The Causes Of Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Infants are at a risk of brain injury when they are shaken forcefully or vigorously which results in Shaken Baby Syndrome. It is so because –
The skull of a new-born baby is very soft. If it gets hit even with a soft object like a pillow while being shaken, an infant's brain may get injured.
Babies have heavy and large heads in comparison to their body.
They have weak neck muscles which do not help in holding the head straight.
The blood vessels in the brain of a baby are very delicate. Therefore, when the head is shaken pressure is exerted which causes haemorrhage.
Signs And symptoms Of SBS
Signs and symptoms may vary from one baby to another, according to several factors like the age of the baby, how much force was used, how often he has been abused and for how long. However, some of the common symptoms are –
Irritable mood and persistent crying
The baby may vomit
The baby may lose his appetite
The baby may stop smiling or babbling like before
In serious injury, the baby may experience seizures
He may have difficulty in breathing
His body may become limp
Slow heartbeat
The baby may have trouble hearing
Retinal bleeding
In severe case, the infant may go into coma
He may also have other signs of physical abuse like broken bones, burnt marks, and bruises.
Baby may become excessively lethargic
The skin may turn pale or bluish
How Is Diagnosis Done?
To diagnose the problem, a doctor will first ask for a detailed medical history of the baby. He will also ask about the time when the behavioural changes started occurring. He will get a thorough physical examination of the infant done and look for bruises or any other signs of abuse. Since the brain is bruised in SBS, the doctor may take a blood pressure reading. Imaging tests, like MRI or CT Scan, will also be done to look for bleeding or injury in the brain. The infant may also have to undergo X-Rays in order to look for broken bones if any. Apart from these tests, a doctor may ask for other tests to be conducted to rule out other causes.
Complications And Long-Term Effects Of AHT
The complications and side effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome or AHT is long term. It can pose serious problems for the infant in the long run like –
The infants may experience seizures and have uncontrolled muscle movement.
He may be unable to see, speak or interact normally with others for the rest of his life.
He may suffer from Cerebral Palsy which affects the limbs and muscles, thereby making the movement of a person near impossible.
The infant may have intellectual and learning disabilities. He may never be able to talk or even if he talks, may not talk normally like children of his age.
The child may have emotional and behavioural problems.
Treatment
A baby with SBS or AHT requires emergency care which usually includes life support like oxygen and surgery to immediately stop internal bleeding in the brain. Furthermore, if the child suffers from other kinds of abuse along with it like burns, broken bones etc., doctor may administer treatment for that too. Ophthalmologists' may also be required to treat the child since retinal bleeding is common in an infant who is SBS-affected.
Prevention
Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome is not impossible. All you need to do is –
Resist any urge to shake your baby. It is usually an outcome of anger or frustration in parents due to various reasons like the child crying continuously, postpartum depression, stress etc. However, just remember to back count until the anger/frustration gives way to the calmness in you.
Understanding that for a newly born or an infant crying is his only way to show displeasure or to put his feelings across.
Parents must also understand that as the infants grow and mature, the crying will become infrequent.
Parents can practice yoga and breathing exercises which will help them to lessen their stress.
Asking a friend or a family member to come and babysit sometimes while the parent can have some "me time", can help the parent to feel relaxed and handle stress better.
Enrolling in parenting classes can teach the parent ways to manage stress and how to handle crying infants.
If the parent hires a nanny or help to look after the baby, he/she should be guided properly and forewarned about SBS. In order to keep a regular watch on the help, the parent may install CCTV cameras.
When Should You Call The Doctor?
A doctor should be immediately called in when you see any of the symptoms of SBS like seizures/convulsions, breathing problems, or retinal bleeding, or if you suspect that your baby has SBS.
What To Do When Babies Cry?
The first thing to remember when your baby is crying is to relax. Remind yourself that it is a passing phase and with time your baby will mature and his crying will become infrequent. After having given yourself an inner "pep talk", try out the following –
Lift your baby and caress him and do a little talking with him.
Then wrap him in a blanket so that he feels secure.
Try creating noises which will help in drowning the other noises. You could even sing something to him like a lullaby.
Do the swinging movement (either in your hands or you could even place him in a cradle in case he has stopped crying by now)
You could also let him suck on a pacifier. Better still, breastfeed him (or give him a bottle of milk). In case he is crying due to hunger, that will pacify him.
In case you sense something wrong with your baby, take him to a doctor immediately.
Understanding the essential causes of Shaken Baby Syndrome is the best way in which we can prevent it. It requires a cooperative effort in identifying, investigating and preventing SBS in children. Everyone should be equipped with the knowledge of SBS so that any individual can easily detect it, manage it (if they see anyone affected by it) and try and prevent it.

4 Foods To Encourage Weight Loss in Toddlers
A weight loss diet for overweight kids should not put pressure on your little one. It should be incorporated in normal food. Yes, you always introduce healthy food options to make it a smooth process. Don't cut back on calories drastically. It could affect your child's health!
Your child doesn't need to go on a diet to lose weight. Rather, all you really need to do is concentrate on feeding your baby certain foods that'll aid in weight loss. Here is a compilation of foods that'll for sure cut your baby's flab.
How to Lose Weight for Overweight Toddlers
1. Fruits
It comes as no surprise that vegetable and fruits are good for your kid. However, avoid corn and potatoes. Tropical fruits like bananas and pineapples (super rich in sugar) also contribute to weight gain. Try apples, grapes, oranges, kiwi and berries. Start your kid’s day with eggs. They are a great source of protein and will keep your little one full and will help him lose weight. Once you're conscious of your child's weight, overweight children and weight loss will cease to be a nagging issue.
2. Avocados
There's no harm in letting your little one eat fats—as long as they are not harmful. A light avocado snack with a healthy dip could be perfect for your little one. Avocados contain oleic acid, which will fill your child and prevent him from being hungry all the time. Make sure you give him only a quarter or a half an avocado. The creamy fruit is beneficial because it's filled with fiber and protein.
3. Broccoli & Leafy Greens
Most kids stay away from broccoli. Therefore, you'll need to find a way to make the veggie palatable. This veggie is known for cancer-preventing powers and is full of fiber and low on calories. Just make sure to serve your little one small portions of broccoli every alternate day and watch the pound melt away. Leafy greens include spinach, kale, collards, and a few others. Green vegetables are low in carbohydrates and calories and loaded with fibers. They also contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Need we say more?
4. Grapefruit
One fruit that deserves mention for its weight loss properties is grapefruit. Sweet and yum, you can cut grapefruit into pieces and serve your child as an afternoon snack to keep him feeling healthy and fit. Grapefruits also help reduce insulin resistance, a metabolic abnormality that causes a number of chronic diseases. Giving your little one a few pieces of grapefruit before his meal will keep him full and satisfied.
Remember, you just need to improve your child's diet without enforcing it. Small changes in food habits will help your toddler lose the extra weight. Don't restrict him from eating his favourite food. Just smartly cut down on it. Of course, a cheat meal here and there will do no harm. After all, it's all about eating in small portions. Also, try to keep the servings creative and interesting to attract the attention of your child. Read more

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. But it is really very difficult to say anything without proper examination. It is advisable to get yourself evaluated by a gynaecologist and follow doctors advise properly. You can also book online doctor’s appointment on FirstCry where the doctor can guide you properly.
Thanks and take care

A. usually fixed. better to show to specialist always as they get the correct diagnosis. try to avoid self and extra medication that will only complicate this and create more damage to the child
