Vaginal Changes During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can bring about a lot of changes in a woman's body. If you are pregnant, you know what we are talking about. Your body must be going through a lot of hormonal changes during this time. You must have noticed certain changes in your body like weight gain, breast tenderness, shiny hair and skin, etc. But there's a lot that happens 'down there' during pregnancy which you may not have realised yet.
Vaginal changes are hard to notice in early pregnancy. There will be virtually no change in the first trimester because it’s too early. However, you will notice certain changes in the second and third trimester. Your lady parts will change as a result of the hormonal changes, even in outward appearance. The changes in the hormonal levels in the body can also result in the appearance of varicose veins, which affects around ten per cent of pregnant women. These veins disappear around six weeks before labour, hence you need not worry about that. Read on to know what all changes pregnancy can bring about in your vagina.
Changes That May Happen to Your Vagina During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, a whole lot happens below the belt. Some of the vaginal changes in early pregnancy are mentioned below.
1. Your vagina’s pH level will change.
During pregnancy, there will be more blood flow to the parts of your body which will be involved in labour. This includes your uterus and vagina. The increased blood supply will alter the pH balance of the chemicals down there, resulting in a doughy, gluey scent. Yes, your vagina will smell different and chances are you will be able to sense it because of your heightened olfactory senses. However, if you notice that the smell is overpowering or foul, do consult a doctor as it could be a sign of an infection.
2. Your vagina will taste different.
The changes in the taste of your vagina can go unnoticed if your partner does not speak up about it. This change in taste is due to the enhanced blood flow to the vagina, which alters the balance of the chemicals in the genital area. The taste will be more salty and metallic during pregnancy.
3. There will be more discharge from your vagina.
Most women think that vaginal discharge during pregnancy occurs only close to the time of labour, but that is not true. Pregnancy is characterised by an abundance of hormonal changes in the body of the woman, which can result in the changes in labia during pregnancy. Your vaginal walls will be stimulated to produce a milky discharge called leukorrhea, which can help keep your lady parts free of any infections. So, don’t be afraid if the vaginal discharge is more than usual.
4. You may get urinary tract infections.
You will be at the risk of contracting urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy. As your pregnancy progresses, your enlarged uterus will press up against the bladder, which can stop the bladder from draining completely. This can cause a urinary tract infection.
5. Your vagina may become extremely sensitive.
An increase in the blood flow to the vulva during pregnancy can make it engorged and sensitive. It may swell and become sensitive.
6. You might get varicose veins down there.
Another change caused due to the increased blood flow into the vaginal area is the occurrence of varicose veins. The walls of the veins are under pressure, as a large amount of blood progresses through them slowly. This is the reason for the appearance of varicose veins in expectant women.
7. Your vagina will be more vulnerable to yeast infections.
Yeast infections are common in women, whether they are pregnant or not. Around 75% of women are affected by yeast infections. However, pregnant women are more susceptible to yeast infections because of an increase in oestrogen levels and changes in the pH levels.
8. Your vagina’s colour might change.
The signature colour of the vagina is usually pink but it might change during pregnancy. Increased blood flow down there may lead to this change. It is also known as Chadwick’s sign. The hormones affecting pigmentation may also turn your labia and vulva into darker shades of blue during pregnancy. This change may happen as early as four weeks, and it could also be one of the early signs of pregnancy. But there is nothing to worry about. The blue or purple colour should disappear shortly after you give birth to your little one.
9. You might notice more ingrown hair.
The large amounts of oestrogen in the bloodstream may result in faster growth of pubic hair, which can then get clogged in the pores due to profuse sweating.
10. Your vagina may feel itchy.
Yes, you might feel itchy down there. Increased vaginal discharge, changes in the pH levels, and other changes may leave you uncomfortable and you might feel itchy. Itchiness down there is a common symptom of pregnancy and can happen anytime, but if it persists for longer than you can take it, consult a doctor soon.
A woman's vagina plays a key role in the pregnancy journey. During pregnancy, some changes are bound to occur in your vagina - they may seem strange but they are completely normal and expected. None of these changes lasts long and won’t affect your pregnancy. Furthermore, your lady parts will return to normal quickly after your baby comes into the world. However, if these changes get in the way of your day to day life, talk to your gynaecologist about the same.

Do You Spoon-feed Your Baby? This Study Has Very Important Advice for All Moms
At around six months of age, many mothers start introducing their babies to solids and semi-solids. To make this change, we feed our little darlings using a spoon. It is easy to feed foods such as purees, mash, soup, etc., using a spoon, which is why it becomes a constant companion for meal-times. Many of us continue to feed our baby with a spoon for several months as it helps ascertain that the child has had enough food. However, a study in the field of child development has pointed at a big risk for all spoon-fed babies. It is important to take note of this and make changes in our baby’s feeding accordingly.
The study was conducted by Amy Brown, an associate professor at Swansea University. For her book “Why Starting Solids Matters”, she has extensively studied babies, their weight and eating behaviour. Her research points at a major precaution we must observe when feeding our babies:
Babies who are spoon-fed for a long time are at a much HIGHER risk of developing childhood obesity! These babies may struggle with weight problems for several years. Importantly, these results are independent of other factors such as the mother's background, birth weight, weaning age and breastfeeding.
We will be honest, this came across as quite a shock, especially as feeding babies with a spoon is a habit with many moms. However, obesity is not a problem we can choose to ignore. The number of cases of childhood obesity are rising dangerously, and it exposes our kids to several serious problems ranging from heart disease and diabetes to self-esteem and social development issues.
Why Spoon-feeding is An Obesity Risk for Babies
Amy explained the link between spoon-feeding and obesity in detail, and also stressed the need to use a baby-led approach for weaning: When babies are fed with a spoon, it is not easy for them to understand when they feel full and have eaten enough. Neither their brain nor their stomach is so well-developed yet. This means that parent-led spoon-feeding can often lead the children to eat more than they need or want.
On the other hand, when the baby feeds by himself and is allowed to handle foods, he can control the intake and eat at his own pace. This promotes appetite regulation and healthy weight gain trajectories.
Infants weaned using a baby-led approach are also better able to stop eating when they felt full. This means they are less likely to become overweight due to overeating. Bonus: youngsters who are given the opportunity to feed themselves are more likely to be adventurous as well as become healthy eaters when they grow up!
When & How to Stop Spoon-Feeding Your Baby
The expert recommendation is to stop spoon-feeding your baby after the age of six months. At this time, you should slowly let your baby handle foods and attempt to self-feed. Usually, babies are ready to start self-feeding by the age of 6-9 months. You will, of course, need to spoon-feed from time to time as the baby cannot handle cutlery properly yet, but the idea is to let the baby try.
Remember that every baby is different and some may take longer to be ready for baby-led weaning. Check for the following signs in your baby to understand if it’s time to stop spoon-feeding them:
Your baby can stay in a sitting position
Your baby can hold their head steady
Your baby can co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth
Your baby is grasping food or objects with the palm of the hand
Your baby can swallow food and not push it back out with their tongue
If you see the above signs in your child, you can start teaching them to self-feed! A few healthy and safe options to teach your baby to eat with a spoon are:
Well-cooked pasta
Mashed vegetables
Scrambled eggs
Porridge/pudding
Note: Strictly avoid foods such as grapes and peanuts as they might cause choking in kids. Also supervise your child at all times.
Two Other Expert Feeding Tips for Babies
Once you have ruled out extended spoon-feeding as an obesity risk for your baby, also keep these two precautions in mind:
1. Let Your Baby Decide the Quantity
Never force feed. As a rule, babies should be allowed to eat as little or as much as they want when learning to feed themselves. If they fail to eat enough in one meal, space their meals out more closely so they are eating more often. Many babies find it difficult to eat too much at one go as their stomach is still small. You can also compensate for uneaten food through healthy snacks and making the next meal-time earlier.
You can read more about understanding your baby’s appetite here.
2. Watch Out for Signs That the Baby is Full
Most babies will show clear signs when they have had enough to eat; we just need to spot them. Amy says, “When you are waving the spoon around and saying ‘Here comes the big aeroplane - let's finish it’, if they clamp their mouth shut, forget about it.”
Some other signs include turning their head away, saying (or trying to say) ‘No’, and spitting out food. Don’t force your baby to eat if you observe these signs.
Remember: healthy eating habits start early, and so do weight-related problems. Sticking to expert-recommended feeding precautions right from childhood is a good way to ensure your baby is getting adequate nourishment, without being at risk of obesity.
Children can develop obesity in their early years even if no one else in the family is overweight. It is imperative that we exercise this caution when feeding our little darlings. Read more

If You Shave or Wax Your Body Hair, You Must Know These Important Facts
We are Indian women, and predominantly, have dark hair. We thus tend to shave/wax more than people with lighter hair. If you do not see the need to, that's a completely individual choice. But you can refer this fact-sheet to a friend who would rather get rid of the fuzz than sport it.
India, the land of tropical climates, sweat patches, butter chicken and hair. Now, don't get us wrong; we are gorgeous people with exotic looks and our dark and thick hair is enviable. Our body hair says a lot about us too! However, when our bodies are full of the same dark, thick hair, it can feel rather vexing to many women. Also, heat and hair DO NOT go together.
Thus begins the rigmarole of threading, plucking, waxing, shaving, laser hair reduction, over and over again. We can choose not to if we want, but if you are one to love no-fuzz and resort to shaving or waxing, here are some important things you should know. They are critical for your skin's health.
Shaving – Lowdown
“Don't shave, wax...your hair growth reduces and your legs will be smoother longer.” You've heard this before and we know it. Do you think this is true? Let’s look at some myths and facts we know all too well and get down to busting or affirming them, shall we?
1. Hair Grows Back Thicker, Denser and Pokier!
Incorrect. Shaving does not make your hair grow back thicker and faster. Your hormones and genetics are the only things that control this. But you can swear by it! Well, this is what actually happens. When you shave, your hair gets cut on the surface and not in the natural way a hair strand narrows at the tip. This makes it appear thicker and pokey.
2. Dry Shaving is A-Okay
Not recommended. Remember, a blade is running over your delicate skin layer. Water helps the razor blade glide smoothly over your skin. In fact, we'd recommend using conditioner to soften hair before you shave it.
3. Shaving Every Day Is Bad For Your Skin
Actually, shaving everyday removes dead skin cells and makes your skin smoother. If you have faster hair growth, it is completely okay to shave every day. Some of us prefer to let our hair grow out a little and that is okay too.
4. It Is Okay To Share a Razor
Bet you thought we were okay to say its okay. It is not. The obvious reason is that it isn't hygienic at all. Secondly, someone else's razor may not be best for your skin or vice versa. This is true especially if you are sharing with your husband, as men's razors have blades designed for men's facial hair.
5. New Razor Blades Cut More
Actually, old blades that are blunt tend to cause more nicks and cuts because we tend to press them down harder on our skin. Either way, be careful to only glide the blade smoothly over your skin. Putting excess pressure on the razor can also cause cuts.
6. Because Shaving Exfoliates, It Will Help Reduce Tans Too
Shaving does not remove the tan even though it does remove dead skin. This is only a shaving hair myth. Your skin anyway has its own cell renewal process which takes place every 4-6 weeks. New skin cells push to the top of the topmost skin layer, pushing dead skin cells off. Don't worry, rock that tan!
Now we know what shaving does or doesn't do and this is why we love it:
It’s fast
Relatively pain-free
Can be done without any major technical knowledge
Cost-effective
You don't have to wait till the hair grows back to a certain level
Sounds good to us but let's give waxing a chance too, yes?
Waxing – The Lowdown
“Waxing is too painful, but it removes tans, and ingrown hairs!” True? Let's find out.
1. Hair Needs To Be Very Long Before It Can Be Waxed
True to a certain extent. People wax smaller eyebrow hair as well so it doesn’t really have to be very long. This would essentially make people with lesser hair growth non-eligible for waxing, which is not true. While hair needs to be slightly longer than stubble for wax to grip on, it doesn't need to be “long”.
2. Waxing Removes Ingrown Hairs
Ingrown hairs are ones that grow under your skin and will occur no matter what hair removal method you are using. The key to freeing these trapped hairs is to exfoliate regularly and preferably before a waxing or shaving session. Laser Hair Reduction is another great way to remove ingrown hairs.
3. Waxing Harms Your Skin
Nope, not true! While waxing your face can cause wrinkles, waxing your body doesnt cause any long-term harm. The skin on the face is more sensitive and using wax on the face can cause the skin to become loose over time and get wrinkled. Waxing your body, on the other hand, may only cause minor side-effects like redness and bumps that usually settle down in a few hours. In fact, it exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells. If you're still worried about waxing, you can try a safer and relatively less painful method called sugaring! Understand what is sugaring by watching the video below:
https://youtu.be/b1E8RPShhvM
4. Waxing Removes Tans
Tanning is caused when, during sun exposure, excess melanin is secreted and deposited on the outermost layer. When you wax, your tan does lighten to a certain degree.
Now we know what waxing does or doesn't do and this is why we love it:
It removes tans to a certain extent
Hair removal lasts up to 2-3 weeks
Hair feels softer
Most times someone else does it for you
Now that you have all the myths busted and facts affirmed, choose the one that suits you the most. Go on and take your pick to get fuzz-free, silky smooth skin! Read more

Good and Bad Drinks For Your One Year Old
Supermarkets are packed with all types of drinks. It's up to you to choose which health drink is best for toddlers. With such a long list to pick from, knowing the good from the bad is vital. After all, many drink options look great but aren't all that beneficial.
Reading through nutrition labels when choosing drinks for your toddlers is cumbersome. You’ll never be able to pay attention to facts when you have your little one tugging at your shirt. Here’s an easy way for you to distinguish good and bad drinks for toddlers. Choosing one won’t be difficult anymore.
The Best and Worst Drinks for Toddlers
1. The Healthy Stuff
Water
Plain water is the best choice for a healthy drink. It helps hydrate and regulate body temperature. Your child can also be guarded against urinary tract infections and constipation. Water is a source of fluoride too, which is an important ingredient for healthy teeth.
Whole milk
Your child could do with an extra dose of whole milk, which is a vitamin-rich drink for one-year-old children. It’s a source of vitamin D and calcium, in addition to containing protein and other nutrients. A daily intake of around 16 to 20 ounces of milk will ensure your toddler gets her requirement. If you’re thinking of introducing him to low-fat milk, wait till he touches the 2-year-old mark. Limit the milk to just two cups a day.
Fresh juice
If your child wants to have juice, opt for the fresh stuff that serves as nutritional drinks for toddlers. Concentrated juice and other commercial products contain a high quantity of sugar and not much else. Fresh juice, on the other hand, has vitamins and minerals in addition to sugar. Limit your toddler’s intake of juice to 6 ounces daily.
Smoothies
While these drinks may not quench your child’s thirst throughout the day, they’re very healthy. A smoothie will give her her requirement of nutrients. Try preparing concoctions like milk with oranges and a mix of yogurt, bananas and strawberries.
2. The Unhealthy Stuff
Soda
You would never intentionally give your child drinks that are packed with sugar and calories. Aside from commercial fruit juices, soda is a big source of refined sugar and is an unhealthy drink for toddlers and older kids alike. It can cause tooth decay and obesity too. Leave such drinks on the shelf and opt for healthier choices instead.
Caffeine-based drinks
Just as you wouldn’t dream of offering your toddler a double-shot of espresso, keep her away from other drinks that also contain caffeine, no matter how little. These include iced tea, energy drinks and vitamin water. Unlike an adult, toddlers are a lot more susceptible to the harmful effects of caffeine. It can also disrupt afternoon naps and cause tummy troubles, headaches and lack of concentration.
Choosing the best drinks for your toddler doesn’t have to be as hard as you imagine. Just remember to avoid giving sugary and caffeinated drinks, and stick to those rich in nutrients. When you maintain a balance between healthy drinks and those that every little toddler likes, you needn't worry. Read more

Thank you 2018 - The Best Ever Thing Happened in My Life!
2018 - You are one of the most memorable years of my life!
Everyone welcomes New year with lots of joy, a bundle of hopes and expects many good to happen in the new year. And the joy of unexpected things can't be explained in words! I welcomed 2018 in the same way as it started with an unexpected good news! On one side, where my happiness had no boundaries, on the other, I was a little bit confused and tensed! It is my prince's arrival into our lives - and most certainly the best ever thing happened in my life!
Yes, the good news is about my pregnancy. The most important phase of a woman's life. Like every other woman, I dreamt of my having my own baby. I thought about his growth and enjoyed his movements inside of me. Though I have faced many ups and downs, felt depressed sometimes and of course screamed, "This is the worst year". But today, I am saying this from the bottom of my heart, 'You are the best memorable year in my life'. Surely, you deserve this, because all the pressures and many issues taught me the reality of life and strengthened me to face the challenges ahead. The first eight months I have been eagerly waiting for my Naanu (Prince), and no sooner the day arrived. It was 18th August 2018, Saturday 15:15 hrs, my little Prince came into this world with the help of Dr. Tina Singh Mam.
18-08-18 - The day when I first touched my son. As it was a C-section for me, I could not hold him that day, I was just allowed to kiss him. My first touch, I kissed him on his left chubby cheek. Yes he is so chubby, that moment is unforgettable and finger crossed, saying no other things in my life can beat this feeling. Last four months I was busy taking his care, recovering from my surgery. As a new mom, I have many challenges and pressures, but his innocent smile wipes off all those worries. My day starts with seeing his face, enjoying his smiles, hugs, tantrums, watching his silly activities and singing lullabies. His cherished smile when I say "I love you I love you...." is a praiseworthy gift to me.
I always want to name my baby or at least add a name to nakshatra name according to my wish, I'm a bit selfish about naming my son because round the clock I use to call his name, don't I have the right or freedom to name my little one? Finally, after a small revolution and by God's grace we named him according to my wish. I sorted out the name in memories of my elder sibling and my dearest uncle whom I'm the most affectionate about. Everytime I or my family call him, he recognized his name and responds with sparkles in his eyes and the thought of calling his name gives me goosebumps!
I named him "VEEREN", yes - VEEREN, who gave meaning and fulfillness to my life. Veeren love youuuuu so much naaanu!
Once again Thank You 2018 for all these cherished memories..

5 Finance Tips for Single Parents
Single parents should take stock of their finances to ensure a secure future for their kids. It is never easy to be both the caretaker and breadwinner for the family, but the payoff is worth it. Therefore, single parent finances should be channeled from the word go.
Being a single mom means that you don't just have a hard time emotionally, but also financially. When you're walking such a tightrope, looking out and securing your and your child's future should be paramount. When you map out a way to secure your child's future, you contribute to his growth as a human being and also feel confident along the way. Financial planning will enable your child to follow his dreams and make you a proud mom. Here are some financial planning tips for single moms that can't ever be sidelined.
Single Parent Finance Ideas
Budget
As a single parent, one of the first and most important things to do is to make a budgeting strategy. Set realistic goals that you can achieve. Set aside money for bill payments, school fees, and some extra yet useful shopping too. Of course don't forget to invest in long term policies and save, even if that means putting it in a piggybank. Remember, any or rather all types of saving will reap you benefits.
Emergency Savings
Most single moms are always living on the financial edge. Large bills, decreased work hours, or an unexpected medical emergency can eat into your earnings. Creating an emergency savings fund will help save the day in most cases. Look over your budget for the month and try to cut back on things that you can do without. Consult a financial advisor for a plan that will benefit your kid in the long run. When you create this fund, ensure that you do not dip into it. Let it remain untouched and watch how it matures.
The Contingency Plan
It is important that you make out a will in case of an emergency to place your possessions and estate in safe hands. While it might not be the best pastime to draw up legal documents, it does however secure your kid's future. When you make these choices, it relaxes you. It gives you the peace of mind that no matter what, you have made arrangements to ensure that your child is in need of nothing and is secure.
Manage Debts
While you may have a weakness for splurging on designer bags or shoes, saving for a rainy day should take precedence when you're a single mom. That doesn't mean you should live an austere life. It just means that you need to start paying for the stuff you buy as opposed to raking up large credit card bills. Set aside a small sum for your monthly splurge. The rest of your income can be divided in other parts. A significant amount should be deposited for your kid's future. This is one of the best budgeting tips for single moms.
Life Insurance
Life can be very uncertain. It is always good to safeguard your kid and yourself from any potential risk. Getting a life insurance that suits your pocket is always advisable. This is important because a high monthly premium can be difficult to handle. You could also ring up a friend who is an expert in the field before committing to a scheme. Once you are well-informed, you can make the right choice.
These tips will provide the best financial assistance to single parents. Since they do not have the support of a second person, it becomes imperative to think smarter and act faster. These suggestions will definitely ensure a comfortable and stress free future for you and your child. Read more
