15 Common Baby Health Problems and Diseases
Babies are most vulnerable just after birth. They may be born with certain congenital conditions or may contract infections easily. If you are a new parent, you should be aware of the common health problems that babies encounter and how to tackle them so that you can take care of your baby in the best way possible.
Common Health Problems in Newborns and Infants
Infants are vulnerable just after birth and as they make a transition from the safety of the womb to this world. It is the time when they learn to breathe, feed, and more. It is also the time when their lungs, heart, brain, kidneys, liver, etc., learn to coordinate. If they feel any discomfort, the only way they can communicate is by crying. As a parent, you should try and understand what might be troubling your baby and consult your baby’s doctor immediately.
1. Birth Injuries
Sometimes, during the birth process, a baby may suffer a physical injury. It is called birth injury or birth trauma. A birth injury could result from the use of the forceps while getting the baby out of the birth canal. Most babies recover quickly from the trauma of childbirth. A breech baby may suffer fractures of the tender bones due to the pressure exerted in birthing, instruments used, etc. The doctors will evaluate and treat the baby if such injuries are severe.
2. Jaundice
Jaundice is very common in newborns and infants. It occurs when there is an excess of bilirubin in baby’s blood, which causes yellowish pigmentation of the skin. This is a fairly common problem as many babies are born with neonatal jaundice. It occurs because the baby’s liver is not mature enough to get rid of the excess bilirubin in the blood. Neonatal jaundice normally resolves with time. In most cases, it should disappear within 2 to 3 weeks of the baby’s birth. However, if it persists longer than 3 weeks, it could be a symptom of an underlying condition and parents should check with their baby’s doctor.
3. Colic
Colic is very common in babies but that does not make it easier for parents to handle. When a baby cries continuously for no apparent reason, he may have colic. The exact cause of colic is not known and some theories behind it suggest that it could be because of gas, hormones that cause stomach pain, overstimulation by light or sound, or a growing digestive system. Colic starts at 2 weeks in full-term infants and should subside by the time the baby is 3 months of age. However, if this condition persists, it could be because of intolerance to milk formula or some other underlying condition. It is best to consult a doctor to get the condition diagnosed.
4. Abdominal Distention
Abdominal distention can occur in newborns and healthy infants. One of the prominent causes of abdominal distention in infants is swallowing of excess air. As a parent, you need to observe the belly of your infant. Newborns have protruding and soft bellies. If your baby’s belly feels hard and swollen when you touch it, it could be because of gas or constipation. As the baby’s body begins to adjust to feeding, the problem should get resolved. However, if a bluish tinge persists and much distention of the abdomen is present, it could mean a serious underlying problem with the internal organs.
5. Bluish Skin and Apnea
Newborns tend to have bluish hands and feet. However, the blue colour fades in time as the blood circulation improves in their bodies. But if you notice bluish tinge around your baby’s mouth and it persists for long along with breathing difficulties, it could mean that the baby’s heart and lungs are not functioning well. Your baby could have apnea if his breathing stops for 15 to 20 seconds and he has bluish skin. Underlying condition indicated is a heart problem that needs medical attention and intervention.
6. Vomiting
Sometimes babies vomit or spit the milk they feed - it is a common occurrence. This is why mothers tend to burp their babies to prevent them from throwing up. After being fed, however, if your baby throws up the milk and you notice a greenish colour in vomit and he continues to vomit, then it could result in a serious problem. Infants can get dehydrated very quickly and medical help and treatment may be needed. Lactose and breast milk intolerance is also a fairly common problem that needs medical support and monitoring. Frequent vomiting and spitting up of the milk could be due to an underlying infection or digestive problems.
7. Coughing
If the flow of the milk is too fast, the baby might cough while being fed. Persistent coughing and gagging while being fed could indicate a problem with the lungs or the digestive system. Coughing at night continuously may indicate whooping cough or respiratory problems. If your baby coughs while being fed or at night, you must take him to a doctor at the earliest.
8. Respiratory Distress
This occurs when there is insufficient oxygen for the baby due to a blockage in his nasal passage. The baby may have bluish skin because of the lack of oxygen. It takes a few hours for the newborn baby to learn to breathe normally. Once normal breathing is established, there should be no more bluish colouration. If wheezing, grunting, and bluish colour persist, checking with a healthcare professional is a must.
9. Anaemia
Children of anaemic mothers are born anaemic. Anaemia is a condition in which red blood cells are less than normal as per a child’s age. Anaemia is the lack of haemoglobin, indicating that the level of oxygen in the blood is low and that the blood is thick. Medical intervention is a must as untreated anaemia could prove to be fatal.
10. Fever
Fever is an indication that the body is fighting an infection. However, high and persistent fever above 101 degrees in newborns and infants can lead to seizures and brain damage. If your baby has a high fever, you must take him to a doctor and get the necessary medication.
11. Skin Problems
Problems like diaper rash and cradle cap are common skin issues which can be painful for a baby. The baby may get diaper rash because of wearing wet or soiled diapers for long or because of an allergic reaction to the dyes or contents of the diaper. Frequent changing of diapers and use of a good diaper rash cream is recommended. If the baby has cradle cap, it could be because of excess oil production by skin glands surrounding hair follicles. The main symptom of cradle cap is scales on the scalp. You can wash your baby’s hair with mild shampoo on a daily basis to loosen up and remove the scales on his scalp. This condition should resolve within a few months, but if it doesn’t, check with your baby’s doctor.
12. Ear Infections
Ear infections are common in babies. When a baby has an ear infection, he may tug at his infected ear and will be very fussy. Viral infections are common but they subside within a few days. Bacterial infections, however, can persist for long and can even lead to loss of hearing and may need antibiotics.
13. Oral Thrush
Oral thrush is a yeast infection occurring in the mouth of the babies. Also known as oral candidiasis, this infection is common in babies. It causes white lesions on the tongue or inner cheeks. If your baby has oral thrush, check with the doctor if it is serious enough to administer anti-fungal medication.
14. Cold and Flu
A cold and flu affect almost all infants and newborns as they adjust to the outside world. Although a cold and flu may appear insignificant, it should not be taken lightly as a cold and flu can develop into pneumonia and other serious diseases in newborns and infants.
15. Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is a common reaction to antibiotics and infections in infants. If your baby has diarrhoea, keep him well hydrated by giving him oral saline and water. Also, monitor his stool - if you notice a change in his colour and texture of stools, consult a doctor. Just like diarrhoea, constipation is also very common in infants and newborns. If your baby is constipated for more than three days, check with your baby’s doctor.
Most often, health problems and diseases in newborns and infants resolve on their own with time as babies get stronger and learn to cope. But parents should be very careful. Take your baby for regular checkups to the paediatrician, maintain hygiene, and most of all, have a calm and serene mind. If your baby has any discomfort, please consult your doctor. Meanwhile, enjoy the arrival and adjustment phase with your baby. Not every cough or sneeze is serious!

Say a Permanent No to Smudged Lipstick
Enjoying the appeal of smudge free lipstick is every woman’s dream. Apply these tricks for nicely painted in-place colours that highlight your features and complexion to perfection. Yes, now you can say ‘goodbye’ to lipstick smears and unattractive smudges. Step out with confidence in a pout coloured with perfection.
Do lipstick commercials or Emma Stone’s skilfully coloured pout make you crave for flawlessly painted and smudge-free lips too? While applying lip colour seems no great shakes, holding the colour in place without a smudge is an art few can accomplish. Here, we bring to you some proven tips to avoid smudged lips, which'll help you avoid embarrassments at a party, on a date, or while delivering a presentation alike.
How to Keep Lipstick From Smudging
1. Softer Lips for Smudge Free Lipstick
Feel your lips; are they soft, parched, flaky or dry? As a rule, lipstick smearing is inevitable if your lips are not moisturized. So, if you're struggling with a sun-burned or rough pout, then expect your lipstick to be uneven and flaky. Within a few minutes, the colour will run beyond your lips or flake off easily. What do you do? As a long term solution, just grab a small sugar cube and use the same to soften your lips. Set a weekly alarm for this beauty chore and your smudged lipstick will soon be a thing of the past.
2. Consistent Moisturising is a Must
Make your lip balm or petroleum jelly your best friend; these products are useful for locking in the moisture and ensure head-turning lipstick hues. However, remember to dab off any excess before applying your lip colour. Matte lipsticks (and other variants too) need a dry surface to grip on. So, if your lips feel heavy or sticky even after removing the balm, simply dab on some sheer powder before applying your lipstick.
3. Powdering The Gloss
If highly pigmented gloss is your scene too, then you surely need this tip. Keep a two-ply tissue (separated into separate layers) handy for setting the powder. Slick on your favourite colour and prevent the lipstick from smudging by blotting it with a layer of tissue. Repeat with the second coat. Next, apply a thin layer of sheer powder on to the other tissue and use it to absorb all excess moisture from your gloss. The act seals in the colour and makes it last longer that you may ever imagine. Are you ready to rock the night without any lipstick bleeds?
4. Line The Colour on Your Lip
To avoid feathering, use a line-filling lip liner that matches the shade you intend to use. Thereafter, reach out for a compact lip brush for tracing a concealer around your lips. Two coats of your concealer should do the trick and highlight the lip colour to perfection. And then, a dash of translucent powder gets you those perfect set of lips. Get ready to pout!
Your lipstick can make or break the effects of your makeup. Keep smudging at bay and gear up to attract more attention with nicely coloured lips that don't bleed—today! Read more

My Baby's Experience With HFMD and How We Overcame It
I found out about HFMD (Hand Foot Mouth Disease) recently, when my little one (4 months old) began to cry, without stopping, one day. His head felt extremely hot, and I thought, as we had taken him to a hill station for his first outing, just a day earlier, the climate change and exposure to nature may have made him like this. The next day, he refused to take formula milk in the afternoon, and a moment later, breast milk, too. My whole concentration, then, was my little one. Around 7.pm he started to cry, so I decided to feed him milk in a bottle, but when he was about to drink, he cried out loud. Thus, I understood that he was, indeed, hungry but couldn't suck the nipple of bottle. There was a strike going on at the time, and all private doctors wouldn't be available for consultation until the next morning. I called one of my friends, a homeopathic doctor, and she said it was a sore throat, as his symptoms showed, and to try feeding him warm water. However, when I tried to do so, he began to cry, the moment the spoon touched his tongue, and wouldn't stop crying for the next one and a half hours. He was tired and sucked a bit, and I noticed some pink coloured rashes on his legs, like mosquito bites. However, I was more focused on his discomfort in drinking milk. After a whole night of crying, my mother, brother, and me took my baby to the hospital at 6:30 in the morning, and we consulted our family paediatrician. He examined him, and discovered it is HFMD. His mouth was full of sores, which was why he couldn't drink anything. Spots even began to appear on his hands. The doctor gave him a suppository to clean his bowels, after which my baby slept for an hour. However, he refused to eat even after he woke up. Finally, I took the help of a filler to feed my baby milk, drop by drop. Thankfully, he was slowly able to drink that. Though a large intake of fluids is necessary for HFMD, my baby was too young. The doctor prescribed calamine lotion to apply to the sores, which I did, and my baby's spots did not turn into blisters. Though HFMD can also bring blisters, there's nothing to worry about. Just give your baby plenty of fluids, make him rest more, apply lotions prescribed by the physician, and wait 3 days for the spot to get healed, and you will definitely see the change in your baby.

Perfect Marriage? The road is always under construction! A simple uncomplicated guide of Basics.
A girl, especially an Indian girl is always bought up with an idea of a perfect fairy tale marriage story, from the time she is born literally! She is conditioned in such a manner, that she always feels that life after marriage will be a bed of roses and they lived happily ever after kind of a saga! Many of you will agree? However, any relationship, especially a marriage is never a perfect one. It has to be tailor made. Two people have to strive together to make it perfect or better said a happy marriage! Here are simple mantras that I share with you today, in a complicated world, where the institution of marriage has become a complex issue.
Simple tips for a happy married life :
Communication : When two people are in a relationship, they assume that somethings are to be understood without communicating. It's a mistake. You have to talk it out to your partner about your feelings, what do you want, or share your problems with them. It's impossible to know feelings in another person's heart, as human behavior is unpredictable. So communicate openly about every small thing that matters to you both. Have an emotional connection,in other words empathy. Most of the problems will be resolved by communicating effectively.
SHARE WE TIME: All of us are running in some kind of a race, where we are wanting to reach a particular goal. The personal lives go for a toss, without us even knowing about it. Hence a couple must take out time for themselves doing things that they love doing. Watch a movie together, get intimate, go for a long drive or just for a cozy candle light dinner. It sounds simple, but has a positive impact on the relationship.
Don't take each other for granted : We often don't value people who are most close to us. A husband and wife take each other for granted many times. Give importance and value each other's presence. Make each other feel special, without any occasion. Say I love you just like that. Cook a meal together. Exchange duties of child care. It will go a long way when you learn to value each other by using these simple gestures.
Accept Weaknesses and Strengths of each other : As said earlier perfection is a myth. Everyone has shortcomings. Accepting each other the way we are brings a lot of understanding and compatibility in one another. As we know our partner, we can react, act and handle each other if we know our strengths and weaknesses well. So accept each other!
Ditch the mobile and social media Excessive use of the social media is creating unnecessary tension between couples nowadays. While conversing with our partners too, our heads are in the phone rather than in their eyes! Phones are taking away precious moments of love and communication. So keep away the phone after a specific time and pay attention to your partner. It will definitely help.
Appreciation and Respect :
Last but not the least, compliment each other for simple things that you do for one another . Appreciation makes wonderful impact on an individual. Who does not like praise and respect. Respect each other's work, time, responsibilities and just the person you're with! It will go a long long way in making a bond strong and evergreen.
Marriage is always a road under construction, needed to be built with love, respect care, trust and understanding. To make it a fairy tale " happily ever after " work on yourself continously. Your partner and you are the Boss!
Hope you enjoyed reading this post. Share your mantras too in the comments section. Would be wonderful to know more ideas! Until then have a wonderful journey of marriage always! Read more

A. the average birth weight of neonates is about 3 kg.
during the first few days after birth, the newborn loses
extracellular fluid equivalent to about 10% of the body
weight.
most infants regain their birth weight by the age of 10 days. subsequently, they gain weight at a rate of
approximately 25 to 30 g per day for the first 3 months of life.
thereafter they gain about 400 g weight every month,
for the remaining part of the first year. x
an infant usually doubles his birth weight (taken as 3 kg) by the age of 5 months. the birth weight triples at 1 year and is four times at 2 years of age.
the weight of ca child at the age of three years is usually
five times that of the birth weight.

A. Some women may have vomiting throughout their pregnancy. The most common reason for vomiting during the third trimester may be gastritis. Make sure you eat small frequent meals, preferably every 2 hours. If your baby's weight during checkups are adequate..u needn't worry much about this. You can also consult your doctor and take anti emetics and PPIs if the vomiting is bothering you or interfering with your daily activities.

Q. Is it okay is the baby does not pass stool for one day?

A. For breastfed infants it depends on age. During the first month of life, stooling less than once a day might mean your newborn isn't eating enough. However, breastfed infants may go several days or even a week between bowel movements, using every drop they eat to make more baby, not poop.
