Your 18 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Your baby is officially 18 weeks old and you might have witnessed quite a few developments in him in the past months. While it may seem to you that he has turned 18 weeks so soon, you know it well that's not true! You have had sleepless nights and done everything possible to take care of him and help him meet his milestones. By now, your little one must have discovered his feet and toes and he will start rolling over any day now, if he hasn't already. By this stage, most babies ramp up their development even more and get a good idea of how to handle themselves. Learn everything you need to know about your 18-week-old baby's development.
Your 18-week-old Baby's Development
Your baby will continue to gain weight but his weight gain will reduce a bit in comparison to the previous months. From now on, his emotional and mental development will start. That being said, there are still many changes that will happen in the physical behaviour and motor coordination portions of his body. Having started rolling over already or being pretty much on the verge of doing that, your baby will now fall in love with the concept of movement and would want to engage himself in carrying it out. Your baby may constantly wriggle if you hold him or wrap him, and at times might bump his head on the floor or fall of the couch, and so on. If your baby has started rolling over, you need to take extra precautions to prevent the worst from happening.

Your 18-week-old Baby's Milestones
By this week, your baby will find everything interesting and intriguing. He will even be intrigued by his own body parts; he will discover his hands and legs. He will observe his fingers and toes, will see how they move, and attempt to put them in the mouth. He will soon gather how to use them the best. This could mean that he will be able to put his legs on the bars of the crib and push himself to move around in that space itself. Don’t be surprised to see your baby in a weird position moments after you leave him there on his own.
Although wrapping your baby when he sleeps will help him prevent from doing any harm to himself, many recommend leaving your baby as is. This will allow him to move his limbs a lot more than before, which will then help him learn to walk.
By this time, your little one's teeth will start preparing themselves by taking their positions under the gums and erupt slowly. If your baby has early teething tendencies, there is a high probability that the front teeth of the bottom gum might already be starting to show themselves near the surface, just about to cut it.
Your baby will now learn about his own individuality and will understand that the sounds he makes will be different from yours. He will see your face in the mirror alongside his own and will learn things from you.
Slowly, he will start interacting with the familiar faces around him - he will also start trusting them. This also means that strangers might make him wary and he may cry looking for you among strange faces. But the more time your baby spends with them, the more he will start trusting them.
By this time, his perception of space, depth, and coordination will have improved quite a lot. His judgement in going for objects and grabbing them will be met by a reduced number of failures. Being able to look at multiple objects and follow those with his eyes will start becoming a normal task for him.
His communication skills will develop a lot (as per his age though) more as he will try to imitate the sounds you make and establish contact with you. This can be escalated further as you repeat back the sounds he makes but in a louder voice or a different tone. It acts as validation and encourages him to communicate more often. Using different objects to make sounds will also help in the same way.

Feeding
Most mothers tend to start making their way to return back to work or at least take some time off to catch up with work-related activities from home. This might necessitate feeding your baby via a bottle especially if he has been purely feeding off your breast all this while. Many babies do accept the bottle quickly since the increased flow and convenience works in their favour. Other babies might want breastmilk and may not accept the bottle readily.
One way to work this out would be to keep a bottle by your side while you are breastfeeding your baby. You can introduce the bottle gradually. If you introduce it slowly and repeatedly, it will make your baby believe that the bottle is an extension of you and start drinking from the bottle as well. Gradually, you can then let your baby lie by your side and feed him using a bottle or ask somebody else to help you out with that. Some babies reject a bottle but accept milk through a cup or so. If any other person is going to be taking care of the feeds in your absence, do make sure they have a proper understanding of how much feeding is necessary and an approximate schedule that your baby is used to.
If possible, pump the breastmilk and store it so that it can be given via bottle; and resort to giving the formula only if this isn’t a possibility. Your parents or relatives of the earlier generation might take care of your baby and find it appropriate to introduce solid foods since that was the norm in their times. It is important to make it expressly clear to abstain from giving any solids. Your baby might show interest in wanting to taste something on seeing others have their food but don't start with solids yet. Your little one is still too young to be given solids.

Sleeping
For an 18-week old baby, sleep still remains the most important aspect of his growth. Any distractions may disrupt his sleep and make him cranky. If others are taking care of him, do let them know of any techniques or any music that is beneficial in making him fall asleep quickly. Holding him for a while, cuddling him, or taking a small stroll in the pram, and other such activities can make him fall asleep. There isn’t a particular need to wrap your baby up when he sleeps at this age. But you must make sure that there are no hard toys or objects on your baby's bed while he sleeps or he might hold them in his sleep and get hurt.

Tips to Take Care of Your 18-week-old Baby
Here are some tips you should follow while taking care of your 18-week-old baby.
You can introduce bottle feeding to him, but the transition should happen slowly and gradually, plus it should be comfortable for your little one.
Your little one will soon start rolling now, so keep toys that have sharp edges away from him. When your little one is asleep, make sure there are no hard toys near him.
Try hanging playful objects above your baby to keep him occupied when he wakes up.

Tests and Vaccinations
The vaccines of PCV, diphtheria, polio, rotavirus and others are usually administered once the baby has completed 4 months and before he completes 6 months. If the vaccines have been given before, no vaccination is necessary now. If not, your doctor will assist you in developing the right schedule for them.
Games and Activities to Keep Your Baby Engaged
Your baby’s power to remember and recall will start developing a lot more in these weeks and it is necessary to keep that progress going. As sounds are important, so is silence. By talking to him constantly, you can introduce the concept of being quiet by whispering or talking softly (or not talking for a while and just observing him). These little acts and games will help him recognize sounds better. The act of saying “shhh” and then talking gently to your child can be quite an experience for him. At the same time, you can make it fun for him by talking to your baby via a baby monitor. This can also be done by recording your voice on the phone and playing back the audio from another corner of the room. Just the presence of your voice will bring about a smile and recognition on his face.

When to Consult a Doctor
Babies are curious and by now you must have figured that out! Your little one will be curious too and he will be curious about himself and will notice different things about him. But if your baby doesn’t seem to have any interest or doesn’t seem to register his presence at all, it is definitely strange and should be checked with the doctor.
This could also be in case of new toys and games, too. And if your baby doesn't show any interest in interacting with others and seems lethargic, it could be because of some health-related issues. So you must take him to a paediatrician immediately.
Your baby’s mental and emotional development will be rapid at this stage and it will give him a personality in future. You will also see other developments in him! Your baby's progress can bring a sense of relief and you should feel proud of him. But if you feel that your baby is not developing as per his age, do consult a doctor and get him checked!

Best Investment Options for Girl Child in India
Every parent wants to provide a stable financial future for their child. One way for parents to ensure this is by looking into investment options that will help the child get the best education and have access to the finest career options. Parents also have to plan for unforeseen expenditures and emergencies in their child’s life. Providing your daughter with a secure financial future is the responsibility of every parent and the best gift that you can give her to get ahead in life.
Why is an Investment Plan for Your Girl Child Necessary?
In India, parents of a girl child have to plan for future expenses that are required for their daughter’s education, and career. In addition to this, they also have to think about saving for their daughter’s wedding expense as this is primarily borne by the bride’s parents. Apart from this, parents may also want to plan for unexpected requirements like medical expenses or unplanned travel. Hence, a good investment plan for your daughter is necessary to ensure her financial security and successful future.
Where and How You Can Invest for Your Daughter?
There are several investment options available for a girl child in India. Some of these include:
1. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-sponsored investment option specifically for the girl child. It is the best investment plan for the girl child. Parents can invest for two girl children, and the account has to be opened before the daughter completes ten years of age. You can invest until your daughter turns 15. This scheme offers an interest rate of 8.1% per year, which is higher than other similar schemes. In addition to this, the interest is tax-free and the amount invested is also tax exempt under Section 80C. The minimum deposit for the SSY in one financial year is Rs. 1,000 and the maximum is Rs. 1,50,000. This investment scheme reaches maturity when the girl completes 21 years of age. The minimum deposit has to be deposited annually, failing which there will be a penalty of Rs. 50 per year that will be levied. The payout can be obtained when the money is required, such as for higher education or wedding expenses. Parents who are looking for a risk-free investment option with tax benefits and average returns can opt for the SSY.
2. Mutual Fund SIPs
This is one of the better-yielding options for investment schemes for the girl child in India. Parents who are looking for higher returns and are willing to accept an element of risk can go for Mutual fund SIPs. SIP means systematic investment plan in which parents can invest money at frequent intervals to create a corpus for their daughter. This money is invested by the mutual fund's company into a combination of the debt and equities market. It is best to invest in SIPs as soon as your daughter is born so that the benefits are higher. The Mutual Fund SIPs are usually long-term funds with investment periods of around 10 years. Mutual Funds have several child-specific options, and they invest the money into a well-planned combination of debt and equity. This way, the capital is preserved, and the returns are moderate to high. This investment option can provide annual returns between 10 to 15%. However, Mutual funds do now help you get tax benefits. Also, they are vulnerable to market risks, and therefore, it is best to seek help from a qualified investment advisor and do thorough research before investing.
3. PPF
Public Provident Fund (PPF) is the best investment plan for a baby girl, especially if you are looking for a risk-free option where the capital is secure. If you start investing in a PPF scheme when your daughter is a newborn, the fund will increase over 15 years and benefit from compounding. This means that the initial money invested generates earnings which are then reinvested to generate further earnings. The PPF scheme is a government-backed investment option that has a tenure of 15 years. It has an interest rate of 7.6% that is tax exempt under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. The minimum deposit amount is Rs. 500 and the maximum are Rs. 1,50,000 within 1 financial year. Partial withdrawal can be availed from the 7th year onwards.
4. Child Plans
There are several insurance plans for the parents that give a lump sum pay-out to the child in the event of the parents’ sudden demise. In such a case, all the remaining premiums are waived if the policyholder expires. The insurance company will continue to invest the money for the child. The returns from investing this money are paid out to the child periodically so that the child’s upbringing and education are hassle-free. Before selecting an insurance plan, it is a good idea to do thorough market research and consult with an investment planner. This will help you choose an insurance plan that will provide for your child even if you are no longer around.
5. RDs and FDs
Recurring Deposits (RDs) and Fixed Deposits (FDs) are another safe and risk-free investment option for your daughter. Both these have fixed returns with zero risks. You can invest a particular amount, and you will get a fixed interest on that amount. Once the tenure is completed, the investor will receive the capital and the interest. The difference between the two is that FD is a one-time deposit, whereas RD requires you to deposit a specific amount at regular intervals. The interest rate for FD is marginally higher than the interest rate for RD. The FD interest rate varies from 5.25% to 7.9% for 1 year. The interest rate for RDs is between 6.9% to 8% for 1 year.
How Much Money Do You Need to Invest?
When you invest money in your daughter’s future, you need to plan for the corpus she will receive. You also have to adjust for the inflation rate at the end of the maturity period. Below is a sample plan for 2018:
The present cost of higher education
Rs. 25 lakhs
Inflation
5%
The amount required after 20 years for education
Rs. 66,33,244
Amount to invest each month to get the goal amount in 20 years at 10% per annum interest
Rs. 8,663
Parents consider it a duty to ensure that their daughter has a secure financial future by investing in various schemes. You can decide which scheme to choose by thoroughly researching all the girl-child investment options available in India and pick a plan that caters to your specific requirements.

5. Beachy Gender Reveal
Combine your gender reveal and your pregnancy announcements into one, and have a blast while you are doing it.

Siblings can announce the arrival of their new bestie better than anyone. There are many fun ways to have your child make the announcement, and writing it in the sand near a couple of sandcastles is a great one!
7. Family Beach Announcement
If you already have a child, you can have a playful family picture at the beach with a sonogram of your little one included.
8. Beach Time Frolicking
Spending frolicking on the beach can be plenty of fun, so why not include a notice board that announces your latest miracle while holding up your baby’s sonogram to show off to your friends and family.

10. Beach Baby Letterboard Announcement
You don’t even need to be in the picture for this one or have a fancy photoshoot day. Instead, enjoy some time on the beach with a letterboard making the announcement for you against a beautiful beach background.
11. Pet Pregnancy Announcement
Dogs and cats are family members, too, so you can always include them if you have a furry family member in your pregnancy announcement.

When it comes to making beachy announcements, writing directly on the sand is a great idea. You can pose in the same picture, or you can take a picture of your message, along with some cute baby shoes.
13. Bikini or Trunks
If you are not ready to make a gender reveal, or you don’t want to know yourself, you can always make everyone even more curious with a “Bikini or trunks?” board. Hang up a girl’s bathing suit and boys swimming trunks on a make-shift clothesline on the beach with a message, and you are all set!
14. Footprints in the Sand
Plant the “dad plus mom equals baby” image for a beachy and simple pregnancy announcement on the sand. Dad’s footprint plus mom’s footprint equals a baby footprint.
15. Baby on Board
If you and your partner are surfers, this is the pregnancy announcement for you. You can pose with pictures of surfboards representing mum and dad, as well as one for the newest family member.
16. Arggh, Baby Matey
You cannot think of the sea and not think of pirates. This announcement will work even better with a big brother happy to get a first mate finally.
17. Boat Baby
Boating is another favorite for those who love the beach, so if you enjoy some time on the water, you can always use that to help make the announcement a bit more fun.
18. Sunset Announcement
Brighten up your pregnancy announcement at the beach by going for some lovely sunset shots. With the beautiful setting sun reflecting on the surface of the water and peeking through the clouds in a colorful array, your picture will shine just as brightly as the new life you made.
19. Flip Flop Fun
Any beach outfit is incomplete without a pair of flip flops, so post a pic of mum and dad’s feet wearing flip flops and place a pair of baby flip flops in between.
20. Baby Boots
Baby boots are popular for making pregnancy announcements, and there are many ways to use them. If you want simplicity with meaning, a picture of mum and dad holding baby boots with joined hands is a great way to make a subtle yet meaningful pregnancy announcement.
With so many ideas for a pregnancy announcement at the beach, you are practically spoilt for choice. Use any of these ideas as inspiration for your big pregnancy announcement day.

Dealing Reflux Problem in Babies - Please Do Not Panic Rather Be Alert
My daughter was just 16 days old, when one evening she started to cry and that was non stop. Like every new mother I thought she was hungry and started feeding her. But she was refusing to feed. I could not understand what was wrong. It was evening 8 pm. I called up my husband and asked him to rush home. Meanwhile my daughter was crying without stopping and my heart started to beat faster. it was almost 3 hrs that she was continuously crying. I kept on trying to feed her thinking that may be her stomach was not full. And then all of a sudden she vomited all the milk and also milk started to come out of her nose. We got horrified and rushed to the hospital. The emergency immediately got her admitted. The Paediatrician called us inside the cabin and said " Please do not worry. We have kept her under observation. We shall have her chest X-Ray done and let you know".
I stayed at the hospital entire night with my husband. I was just not ready to leave my princess alone. Morning her X Ray was done and the doctor called us once she had the report. She said " Please be seated and be calm. Your daughter is facing Re flux problem. Re flux is a syndrome where babies tend to vomit whenever they are fed. So, you need to take some precautions for her. Since the milk has spread in the lungs, so there is a minor infection. That shall go in 2-3 days.
a. Give her burp whenever she takes her feed.
b. Never lie her straight on the bed.
c. You should always keep her at a height of 45 degrees, whether sleeping or feeding. You can buy her a car cot and she can sleep very well on that.
I asked her " But till when shall it continue??"
"With passing age this shall disappear" replied the doctor.
We brought her back home after two days and planned to go to my native for my maternity leave. Since I was very scared and was in panic, my husband decided to take me and our daughter to my native town.
At my native we consulted another doctor. He said " You need to monitor your child. If she keeps losing weight then she is definitely suffering from Reflux problem, and if she is not then it is not reflux."
And started the journey of 45 degrees..whether it was me or any one from my family..we ensured that my daughter was at 45 degrees only..not even 45.5 degrees. Giving her burp was extremely important. Even carrying her in my arms, I used to keep her at 45 degrees. This continued for 6 months and we visited the doctor. She had gained weight..though not much but yes there was again. I felt relaxed and on the advice of the doctor started to lie her on the bed with the help of a pillow.
I still cannot forget those two days of my daughter's stay at hospital. But sooner the ailment is diagnosed, precautions can be taken.

Helping Kids Cope with Loss and Death
The death of a loved one can be a stressful event for your child. Death is a difficult concept to explain to a child. Most kids do not fully comprehend the concept of death. It is a hard task for any parent to explain these concepts, more so if they are grieving themselves. Find out how to go about it.
When anyone in the family dies, parents face difficulty to understand how to help children cope with the loss. Here are some tips to help your kid overcome the grief and how to answer the questions he is likely to ask you.
1. Be honest
It is very important to be honest with your child. Do not use euphemisms like the dead person has ‘passed away’ or ‘gone away’. Children are unable to look beyond the literal meaning and will be confused or will expect the person to come back. Use clear expressions that he can understand like ‘his body stopped working’. You could include your religious beliefs like ‘he has gone to heaven’ or the concept of rebirth.
2. Make sure the child doesn’t feel guilty about the death
Preschoolers are very centered on themselves and consider themselves responsible for things happening around them. Make sure your child does not, in any way, feel responsible or guilty for the death; especially, if it’s someone he interacted with regularly. Explain to him that being angry with someone or fighting with them or wishing them gone cannot make them die. Also, make sure they do not feel guilty if they want to get back to playing.
3. Talk to him
Help him recognize and express his feelings. Ask him how he’s feeling. Help him identify sadness or anger and help him verbalise it. Talking about feelings is a great way to start resolving them. Sharing your own grief with him will encourage him to share his feelings with you.
4. Give ideas to your child on handling grief
You could ask him to come to you for a hug or cuddle up with a favourite toy when he remembers the person who died. If your child seems reluctant to talk, try to get him express his feelings through toys, books or drawings.
5. Try to keep the routine going:
It is very important to keep the routine going because your child derives a certain comfort from it.
6. Do not get annoyed at unusual behavior
Some children regress due to grief. They might start thumb sucking, bed wetting or talking in baby language. The changes are often temporary, and your child will get over them with time.
Questions You Can Expect
Preschoolers are curious by nature. Be prepared for a barrage of questions. Also, be prepared to answer the same questions over and over again because they process feelings and information in short spells over a long time. They might seem to have forgotten the person and then will come back to you with a query about him.
Here are Some Questions you Need to be Prepared with
What is ‘dead’?
Is dying the same as sleeping?
Are they hurting, feeling cold?
Will they come back?
Will they come back if I am good?
How did it happen?
Try to answer his questions as honestly as you can. If you do not have an answer, do not hesitate to say you do not know it. With an open atmosphere at home, the child will learn to handle his feelings and overcome them soon. Read more
