Vaginal Swelling During Pregnancy
As your pregnancy progresses, you simply cannot wait for your little bundle of joy to come out into the world. However, sometimes, certain health issues during pregnancy can ruin your happiness. Morning sickness, nausea, and back pain are common during pregnancy, and so is vaginal swelling. Vaginal swelling is a condition that can happen during pregnancy and make you extremely uncomfortable. In this article, we shall talk about vaginal swelling during pregnancy, its causes, symptoms, and different ways of treating it.
What Is Vaginal Swelling?
The swelling that occurs in the vaginal area including the vulva and vaginal lips (labia) is termed as vaginal swelling. It also affects pregnant women. Let’s look at some of its causes.
Causes of Swollen Vagina During Pregnancy
Here are some reasons why vaginal swelling during pregnancy can occur:
1. Increased Blood Flow
During pregnancy, blood flow around the pelvic region increases to support the growing fetus. This increase in blood flow may cause swelling of your vagina.
2. Poor Hygiene
Vaginal swelling could also be a result of improper hygiene. If you are negligent about your vagina, it may become the breeding ground for microbes and thus result in swelling and inflammation.
3. Hormonal Changes
Your body undergoes various changes during pregnancy one of them being changing hormones. These hormones can affect the flora of the vagina and lead to various kinds of bacterial and viral growth, and in turn, swelling.
4. Use of Certain Products
Use of certain products may also result in vaginal swelling. These products may trigger an allergic reaction in your vaginal region, leading to inflammation and redness.
5. Sexual Intercourse
Sometimes, lack of lubrication during sexual intercourse or prolonged sexual intercourse may cause vaginal swelling.
6. Cysts
Cysts in the vaginal region can cause vaginal swelling too. Sometimes, these cysts may also be cancerous.
7. Inflammation in the Vaginal Region
Sometimes the inflammation of the vaginal arteries and ducts may cause oedema. Oedema may lead to accumulation of fluid causing swelling in the vagina.
8. Eating Unhealthy Foods
This may come as a surprise but it is true. Your eating habits too can affect the health of your vagina. If you eat too much of junk food or make unhealthy eating choices, it may lead to vaginal infections and swelling.
9. Bacterial Vaginosis
Vaginal swelling can also occur due to bacterial vaginosis (BV). If this is the case, it should usually resolve on its own, but a doctor may recommend antibiotics to speed up the healing process.
10. Yeast Infection
When there is an overgrowth of the Candida fungal species in the vaginal area, it can lead to vaginal swelling. Symptoms include burning, redness, pain during sex and urination, irritated skin and thick vaginal discharge.
Signs and Symptoms of Swollen Vulva in Pregnancy
Following are the signs of vaginal swelling during pregnancy:
Smelly vaginal discharge
Inflammation around the vaginal region
A burning sensation while urinating
Bleeding sores or blisters
Irritation or pain around the vagina
Itching in the inflamed area
Can Vaginal Swelling Affect the Baby?
Usually, vaginal swelling does not cause any harm to the baby in your womb. However, if you have vaginal swelling due to a GBS infection that is Group B strep, then you may infect your baby too. In case you are tested positive for GBS, your doctor will administer a course of antibiotics to cure your infection. But if your baby catches this infection, then your baby may experience extreme lethargy and difficulty in feeding after birth.
How To Treat Vaginal Swelling When You’re Pregnant?
Here are some effective ways of treating vaginal or labial swelling during pregnancy:
1. Refrain from Scratching
You may feel all itchy and uncomfortable, but refrain from scratching any blisters or oozy lesions in your vaginal region.Scratching can further spread the infection and cause more complications.
2. Maintain Hygiene
It is important to maintain hygiene to avoid vaginal infections from aggravating and spreading further. However, do not wash excessively as that may spread the infections to other areas.
3. Do Not Self-treat
It is recommended that you seek medical help as soon as you notice any symptoms of vaginal swelling. Do not self-treat or self-medicate as it may cause complications with the pregnancy.
4. Take Prescribed Medication
After a thorough physical examination, your doctor may prescribe antifungal or antibiotic medicines. In case the infection has spread to other areas, a stronger medicine may be given.
Effective Home Remedies for Vaginal Swelling
You may also try home remedial measures to get rid of itchy and swollen vaginal lips during pregnancy:
1. Drink Water
Drinking water can cure vaginal swelling. It helps in not only reducing the burning sensation, but also the chances of the infection spreading. This is because as you make frequent loo visits, the bacterialget cleared out from your body.
2. Cold Packs
You can use cold packs to ease vaginal swelling and inflammation. Alternatively, you can take bath with cold water too.
3. Use Garlic
Garlic is very effective in treating vaginal swelling. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of garlic work effectively in reducing the swelling. You can make a paste of garlic and apply it on your vagina for a few days to get relief from swelling.
4. Increase Your Intake of Probiotics
Increasing your probiotic intake can help in balancing the overgrowth of bad bacteria and yeast in your body. You can add buttermilk and yoghurt to your diet.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar
The antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar can provide relief from vaginal swelling. You can put some ACV in a bathtub and soak yourself in it for 10 to 15 minutes.
When Should I Go to the Doctor?
You should go to the doctor if:
Swelling and itching doesn’t go away after a few days.
You experience abnormal discharge.
Your vulva has developed ulcers or small bumps.
How Can Vaginal Swelling Be Prevented?
Here are some tips to prevent vaginal swelling during pregnancy:
Maintain vaginal hygiene at all times. Pregnancy makes you more prone to infections, thus taking good care during this time can help to ward off infections.
Do not use scented soaps to clean your private parts as it may cause allergic reactions.
Always wear comfortable underpants, preferably made from cotton fabric. Do not use tight underwear as it doesn’t allow your skin to breathe.
Maintain a nutritious and healthy diet. Do not eat unhealthy foods that may trigger vaginal swelling and itching.
In case your vaginal skin is dry and itchy, you should keep it moisturised.
Vaginal swelling can be very painful and uncomfortable during pregnancy. However, with proper care and timely medical intervention, your condition can not only be managed, but complications can be avoided too.

Taking Cold Medicine during Breastfeeding - Is It Safe?
If you have a cold, it may interfere with just about everything that you do. So it’s no wonder that at the first sign of it, you would hit the pharmacy or take some cold medicine. However, this may not be recommended while you have a little one depending on your for its nutrition. If you are a breastfeeding mom, you will need to take precautions before you take any cold medicines. While this does not mean that you cannot take any at all, it is better to know what is safe and what isn’t.
Can a Breastfeeding Mom take Medicines for a Cold?
Can breastfeeding mothers take cold and flu tablets to get relief from the symptoms? Yes. However, you should be wary about the ingredients in these medicines as they can be passed on to your baby through breast milk. Hence, it is always recommended that you check the ingredients or get prescription medicines from a doctor after having explained your condition.
Safe Cold Medicines for Breastfeeding Mothers
Here is a list of safe and best cold medicines for a breastfeeding mother.
1. Paracetamol or Acetaminophen
Medicines with the active compound acetaminophen like Tylenol, Crocin, etc., can be taken for a cold while breastfeeding. An analgesic, acetaminophen can relieve you from fever, inflammation, and pain. Although acetaminophen will pass on to the baby through your breast milk, it will not cause any harm.
2. Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is considered safe for the baby and only passes on to the baby in micro-quantities, which does not harm. Ibuprofens like Advil are non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs which can lower fever, pain and inflammation. It can also be used for flu, headache, or cold caused by sinus infections. It is best to get a prescription for this as it is not recommended for women with asthma and stomach ulcers.
3. Dextromethorphan
This is safe for breastfeeding moms and is generally taken to suppress cold and cough. However, women with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, and liver disease should not take the medicine as it could make their condition worse.
4. Bromhexine and Guaifenesin
These are prescription medicines and can cure a chesty cough by loosening the mucus in the chest through the cough-reflex. These are safe for both the mother and the child.
5. Amoxicillin
This is an antibiotic used to treat cold and sinus infections. Although, there have been some isolated cases of side-effects in babies, these resolve on their own and hence the medicine considered safe for lactating moms.
6. Zinc Gluconate
This cold-relieving medicine is an over-the-counter drug, but it is recommended that you consult a doctor before taking it. It can be used a gel, which is administered through the nose. The localized, topical application when limited to 12 mg a day makes it safe for mothers and babies.
7. Chlorpheniramine and Hydroxyzine
These are antihistamine drugs and are used to treat allergy-induced stuffy, blocked or a runny nose. You may even be prescribed this during hay fever. These are considered safe for lactating moms and babies as only a small amount is passed on through breast milk. While isolated incidences of colic, drowsiness, irritability were noticed in babies, these were resolved without any medical intervention.
Unsafe Cold Medicines during Breastfeeding
Following are the cold medicines that you should avoid when breastfeeding.
1. Aspirin
Aspirin can lead to acidosis in babies which lowers the ability of the kidneys to maintain the pH levels in the blood and makes it more acidic. It can even cause Reye’s syndrome in babies which can make their blood thin and cause the liver and the brain to swell.
2. Codeine and Dihydrocodeine
These are analgesics, which convert to morphine in the liver after consumption. They affect the central nervous system and also cause diarrhoea, drowsiness, and weakness in the baby as it breaks down slowly in the still-developing liver of the infants.
3. Pseudoephedrine
Used as a decongestant to clear accumulation of mucus in the sinus and the nasal passage, this drug can lower the production prolactin in the mother. This can reduce the supply of breast milk by around 24 percent and cause the baby to be underfed.
4. Phenylephrine
Also a decongestant, this drug is known to have similar effects as that of pseudoephedrine. It is also believed to cause drowsiness in babies.
5. Xylometazoline and Oxymetazoline
These are commonly used in nasal sprays. Since there isn’t enough evidence to confirm their effect on breastfeeding moms and babies, it is advised that you avoid them.
Cold Medications Precautions to be Taken
While taking any form of medications for a cold, these are the precautions that you will need to keep in mind.
Avoid medicines with a high alcohol content.
Take single-ingredient medicines to limit your baby’s exposure to OTC drugs.
Take medications after you breastfeed and avoid breastfeeding for two or three hours after taking the medicine to avoid exposure to the baby.
Avoid taking extra-strength medications or dosages as they will stay in your system and milk supply for longer.
If you take lozenges, ensure that you read the ingredients. Avoid anything with povidone-iodine as it increases the level of iodine in breast milk which can increase the risk of transient hypothyroidism in babies.
Side-Effects of Cold Medicines on Breastfeeding Mom and Baby
Some safe cold medicines can cause minor side-effects like drowsiness, irritability, and jitters in babies. These are often known to resolve themselves. Certain others that are deemed unsafe can cause a range of side effects like lowering the supply of breast milk in the mother, making the blood acidic, causing organs like the brain and liver to swell, etc. These medicines should be avoided at all costs during breastfeeding.
When to Consult a Doctor?
Most of the times, a cold can be mild and subside within a few days. However, if it persists and you notice symptoms like wheezing, facial pain, ear ache, a severe cough, etc., you will need to consult a doctor. These symptoms could indicate more than a cold, for example, ear infection, strep throat, pneumonia, flu, sinusitis, and bronchitis.
Although taking OTC drugs for a common cold is the norm, it is advised that you consult a doctor before taking any medications while you are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid any complications for the baby and you. Read more

Getting Pregnant After IUD Removal - How Long Does It Take?
Many women, who don't want to get pregnant (but have a healthy sexual life), resort to different birth control measures, ranging from pills to hormonal contraceptives like an IUD to prevent pregnancy. But with time, they may want to have babies as they might feel that they are ready for the new responsibility. If your choice of protection was an IUD and now you feel that you are ready for a baby, obviously, you will have to get the IUD removed. But can you get pregnant once the IUD is removed? If yes, then how long will it take for you to conceive? Worry not, we have answers to all your questions.
What Are the Chances of Getting Pregnant After IUD Removal?
Discontinuing the use of contraceptives affects a woman's hormones, menstrual cycle, and her fertility. But a woman’s fertility also depends on the form of contraception that she uses. Intrauterine devices or IUDs are the least disruptive forms of contraceptives.
The use of IUD has little to no effect on the fertility of a woman. It also doesn’t affect the menstrual cycles of a woman much. If you get your IUD removed, your normal menstrual cycle should return in a short time. And once removed, it should not take you too long to conceive.
The use of copper IUDs or hormonal IUDs also doesn't affect pregnancy rates. The cause of infertility due to the use of IUD is scarring in the fallopian tubes following Chlamydia infections and not the IUD itself. Hence, the chances of getting pregnant after the use of the IUD remains the same as before its use.
How Long Does It Take to Get Pregnant After IUD Removal
Many women ask if they can get pregnant immediately after the IUD is removed. Well, the simple answer to this question is 'yes'. It is possible to get pregnant soon after the IUD is removed, especially if a woman uses the non-hormonal type of IUD, which does not affect fertility. This type of IUD prevents conception without affecting a woman’s fertility and is very similar to a condom. Find out how long it takes to get pregnant after the removal of a copper IUD and hormonal IUD.
1. After the Removal of Copper IUD
After the removal of a copper IUD, the body does not need any time to restore its ‘normal’ cycle, hence a woman can get pregnant soon. As long as a copper IUD is being used, it will prevent pregnancy and as soon as it is taken out, fertility is restored and pregnancy can occur in the subsequent months.
2. After the Removal of Hormonal IUD
The same goes for using a hormonal IUD. It is possible to get pregnant in the first cycle without the IUD, as the hormones used to prevent pregnancy are removed along with the IUD.
Ways to Enhance Your Fertility After IUD Removal
Almost all women can have successful pregnancies from three months to within a year of removing the IUD. But it is always good to help the body transition off the IUD through fertility-enhancing therapies. These can improve the uterine environment, help in normal mucus secretion, normalize the menstrual cycle and offer many more benefits. So, here are some tips that you can try if you are trying to conceive after IUD removal:
1. Get a Fertility Cleanse
Getting a fertility cleanse will prove to be a great way to normalize your body after an IUD removal as the IUD affects the cervical mucus and uterine environment. A fertility cleanse also detoxifies the liver and helps in toxin metabolism which aids the uterus to cleanse out old blood during your menstruation.
2. Chart Your Menstrual Cycle
Doctors recommend waiting for 1 or 2 cycles after IUD removal before trying to conceive, as it makes it easier to find the exact date of the pregnancy. Having a regular cycle and determining your fertility window will improve your chances of conception, hence it’s important that you track your periods.
3. Try Evening Primrose Oil
Some women might experience an imbalance of healthy cervical mucus after coming off IUD. The evening primrose oil is rich in linoleic acid (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and helps improve the fertility of the cervical mucus. Its recommended dose is 1500-3000mg per day from days 1-14 during the menstrual cycle when you are trying to conceive. However, before using this, it is suggested that you check with your doctor.
4. Restore Hormonal Balance With Herbs
Women who experience irregular menstrual cycles after an IUD removal can benefit from using herbal preparations that are made for hormonal balance. Tribulus is an Ayurvedic herb that has been in use for a long time now to promote reproductive health. Hormone-based IUDs disrupt ovulation and some women might need support with the libido after removal. Tribulus helps balance both the libido and monthly ovulation.
5. Try Self Fertility Massage
A self-fertility massage is an effective low-cost way to boost fertility naturally after getting the IUD removed. A massage helps restore healthy blood flow to the uterus and heals any scar tissue that may have formed. It also prompts the removal of any waste or toxins accumulated during the hormonal birth control.
FAQs
1. How Do I Prepare for IUD Removal?
You don't need to do anything, in particular, to prepare for IUD removal. The process of IUD removal is less painful than the process of putting it in.
2. How Long Does it Take to Remove an IUD and How Will I Feel While It is Being Removed?
The process of IUD removal doesn't take much time - your doctor will be able to pull it out in minutes. However, it may take longer if your doctor has trouble getting it out. And you might experience some mild cramps while your doctor removes it.
Getting pregnant after an IUD removal is possible and it won't affect your fertility. And, you can always try the above ways to enhance your fertility.

11 Office Desk Plants That Will Make Your Work Environment More Peaceful
What does a good office workspace look like? Air-conditioned? Full of stationary material and cluttered desks? No, it's the plants. They add positive vibes to your environment, cleanse out toxic particles from the air and make you feel a million times better. Whether you've been looking for recommendations for the best office desk plants or just want a few simple suggestions to get started with, we've got you covered.
Best Plants You Can Add to Your Office Desk
Many people don't keep plants on their office desk because of the maintenance that comes with it. The following plants thrive even when you care for them negligently. They neither need a lot of watering, and space, nor perfect lighting.
1. Devil's Ivy
Devil's Ivy is a plant that features heart-shaped leaves and has white or darker shades to them. They're not high on the upkeep and take up very little space. The best part is that they are very adaptive to various lighting conditions.
2. Aglaonema
Known as the Chinese evergreens, Aglaonema is popular for having leaves that change colours. The leaves can go from deep green to light silver. Aglaos translates to 'bright' and nema to 'thread'. According to ancient Chinese tradition, this plant is symbolic of a long life, making it one of the most thoughtful and cultural office table plants out there.
3. Aloe Vera
The gel extracted from the leaves of this plant is an excellent skin moisturiser. Aloe vera doesn't take up much space on your desk either and absorbs any benzene and formaldehyde present in the air.
4. Snake Plant
If your office environment looks dull and the air is too dry, you should get a snake plant. The leaves of these small desk plants can withstand harsh weather conditions and even thrive in environments that have low lighting. Just like the plants listed before, they don't take up much space either. In addition, they last up to one month without water.
5. Cacti
If you want an office desk plant that looks cute and doesn't require much care, then go for the cacti. They thrive well even without much care and in bright light which means the window sill is the perfect spot to keep them. Just make sure no hands can reach the plant accidentally wherever you keep it.
6. Bamboo Plant
The bamboo plant for your office desk can add a bit of zen to your workspace. If you want a plant that creates you a peaceful environment and keeps negative energy away - get this. Indirect sunlight is the ideal lighting condition for this plant and it grows well in both soil and water. It's also considered one of the lucky plants for offices.
7. Weeping Fig
The Weeping Fig grows in the tropical forests of India and is an attractive plant for your office desk. The enemy of this variety is cold air so position them at a place where there is none to make sure they thrive.
8. Dracaena
Dracaena is a great plant that grabs the spotlight for being one of the best office desk plants. It doesn't wilt easily and can survive even the toughest weather conditions. The leaves are really colourful and stand out even more when placed in areas with less lighting. It's one of the best low maintenance desk plants.
9. Peace Lily
If you want a gorgeous office desk plant that cleans the air and absorbs harmful particles, go for the Peace Lilly. It requires moisture and proper drainage so that's a little bit of effort you have to put in there. But the reward for proper upkeep is beautiful and shiny leaves that bring life to your office workspace. Definitely one of the best indoor plants for office desk!
10. Oxalis
If you'd like a tinge of purple in your office, try the oxalis. But be warned, it doesn't like a moist environment and cold weather conditions. However, it doesn't require much maintenance too and thrives really well in spots where there is partial sunlight.
11. Asparagus Fern
Asparagus Fern grows out of pots and the leaves look simply beautiful. They're ideal for warmer climates and in terms of maintenance, you should take care not to overwater them. Place one of these anywhere on your desk but make sure that the plant doesn't get direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight is the ideal lighting condition for this plant.
Having a plant on your office desk can do wonders for your mood and health. You'll start feeling a lot happier and not so lonely during the quiet hours if you work overtime. These are some of the best office desk plants that keep you company and you don't have to worry about caring for them too much. Next time you go shopping for plants, you know what to look for.

Is Your Happiness Just About Someone Else's Happiness Over Yours?
Sometimes, your in-laws can have too many expectations from you, and it can get stressful. You try to fit in their world so that you get a pat on the shoulder for being a good daughter in law. You worry about their opinion and go the extra mile to make sure you stay in their good books. You try every possible way to keep things the way they want you to. Well, that's a very obedient and nice daughter-in-law a family could ever have, and it's a joy you are a part of theirs.
When you were busy running errands for the family, when you were busy looking after your husband's wellbeing, when you were busy monitoring your child's activities, when you were busy ensuring your parents-in-law were doing good, and when you were busy making everyone a healthy meal, did you spare some moments to worry about your wellbeing, too?
We, sometimes, overlook our own problems and forget how to take care. It definitely is a good call to be prioritising the family, but we should realise our mental and physical wellness matters so much to run a happy family.
So, spare some time to pamper yourself by going out, have fun with friends, go dine out with your husband and children, go on a shopping spree, enjoy a vacation, make your husband make something special for you, visit the spa, hit the gym, movies, etc., or at least get some sound sleep. Get your husband to look after the child when you nap, let your parents-in-law or your older siblings or your mom be with the baby when you go out, invite friends over if you can't step out, etc. Plan a getaway if you have a better privilege.
If you can't have any of these, you are for sure stressing yourself, and your body and mind are screaming for help. No matter how much you take care of your family, a little bit of "me" is a must for a happy and healthy you.
