Hair Loss in Babies: What's Normal and What's Not
Every baby is unique, and every child develops differently. However, parents often worry if their children are developing properly. Under normal circumstances, a developing child can still face several problems that could be as severe as infections or as tricky to understand as hair loss.
Hair loss is usually dismissed as a ‘simple’ problem. However, a child’s hair loss, if not natural, can impact the child in numerous ways- especially psychologically. It is essential to understand if the loss of your child’s hair is normal or if there is something else that may need your attention.
Is Hair Loss in Babies Normal?
In the first six months after birth, a child will lose what is known as birth hair. This is the hair that a baby is born with, and this hair is meant to fall off. Small amounts of hair fall post this period is also considered normal. Just like adults, hair loss to a small extent is to be expected in children.
If the hair fall is excessive and not related to the baby's birth hair, it might be a cause of concern. This may require medical assistance, but before going to consult your doctor, it is best to evaluate the possible causes of hair loss in your baby.
What Are the Major Causes?
Some of the major causes of hair loss in children are:
Alopecia areata: One of the reasons for hair fall could be alopecia areata. This condition causes the immune system to attack the hair follicles all over the body. It can cause smooth bald patches throughout the scalp and is known to impact the speed of hair growth.
The function of the thyroid hormone: Thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism can lead to excessive hair loss.
Underactivity of the pituitary gland: If your baby’s pituitary gland is under-active, he may have a condition called hypopituitarism which can cause extreme hair loss.
Trichotillomania: It is a condition observed in slightly older babies where they compulsively pull their hair out. This could be a reason for hair fall.
Physical damage: Tying your baby’s hair too tightly or other forms of physical damage to their hair could lead to irreversible hair loss.
Infection: A variant of the ringworm infection called tinea capitis is highly contagious and can cause hair loss, flaky, and itchy scalp and redness on the scalp.
Hair problems: Lice infestations and the presence of dandruff can cause hair to fall.
Most parents think newborn baby hair fall could be a sign of something more serious. If limited to small amounts, hair loss is expected at any age. Talk to your doctor to get an insight into your baby's hair loss.
When Is It a Serious Problem?
Excessive hair loss could be due to numerous issues. It could indicate nutritional problems, infections like cradle cap, or other medical issues. It is advised that you observe your child closely and talk to your doctor if the hair loss is continuous and excessive.
What Can You Do If Your Infant’s Hair Is Falling Out?
There are numerous ways to combat hair fall, some of which are:
Using medicated baby shampoos to fight infections.
Completing a course of antibiotics that is prescribed by your doctor.
If your baby sleeps on one side, try making the other side comfortable so that he doesn’t develop a bald spot.
It is a common practice in some cultures around the world to shave off the baby's birth hair. It is believed that shaving off your baby’s birth hair will help avoid any bald patches. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove the validity of this practice.
What If Your Baby Is Completely Bald?
This is extremely common. Many babies are born bald. You can rest easy even if your baby doesn’t grow hair till his first birthday. Each baby has a different cycle of development. Don’t panic about your baby having a bald spot, because unless there are any other symptoms, it is normal. Talk to your doctor if you fear other symptoms exist or if you need further clarifications.
Tips to Prevent Infant Hair Loss
Here are some tips to help you avoid infant hair loss:
Don’t tie braids that are too tight.
If your baby has Trichotillomania, consult a child specialist.
Use a mild shampoo and don't shampoo your baby's hair every day as it can dry the scalp.
Avoid anti-dandruff shampoo unless there is a dandruff problem.
Avoid combing your baby’s hair more than once every other day.
Don’t overuse oils.
Wash your baby's hair only once a week.
Don’t medicate your child unless a doctor prescribes the medication.
Don’t dry their hair with heat.
Only use medicated shampoos if a doctor prescribes it and use it only for the time they recommend.
Put a hat or cap on them if it’s too hot outside.
Use a soft-bristled hairbrush to comb your baby's hair.
For more tips and help contact a dermatologist or your paediatrician.
When Should You Visit a Doctor?
Under most circumstances, if in the first six months, the only symptom is hair fall, there is no need to see a doctor. However, if your child’s hair continues to fall after the age of 6 months, visit your baby's paediatrician or a dermatologist. If the hair fall is present with other symptoms like redness, itchiness, ring-like scars, boils, or pain, you must seek medical attention immediately.
It is essential to understand that hair fall could lead to numerous psychological problems in older children. If required, a child psychologist can be consulted to help the child deal with the issue. In infants, hair fall is common, and the best way to put your mind at ease would be speaking to a doctor. Remember that hair fall can be preventable only if the correct action is taken. Reading about hair fall and other conditions can also bring you some peace of mind.

Twin Foetal Movement - Feeling The Babies Move
When you find out that you are expecting twins, you are obviously happy but nervous too. The thought of how the pregnancy will progress leaves you anxious. You will also wonder about the movement of your babies move in the womb. Do you want to know how it feels like when your twins move in your womb? Read this article to find out. The following article outlines what to expect when it comes to twin pregnancy in terms of movement, at various stages.
How Early Can You Feel Twins Moving?
Early foetal movement or quickening in case of a twin pregnancy cannot be felt until you reach the 18-20 weeks, which is the same average for a singleton pregnancy. In case this is not your first pregnancy, or you have a lean body, then the flutterings are likely to be felt faster. Placenta positioning also plays a role in this. Front facing (anterior facing) placentas may inhibit the flutterings from being felt.
Difference in Movements between Twin and Singleton Pregnancies
In case of a twin pregnancy, babies quickly run out of space in the womb. In a twin pregnancy, you will be able to detect individual kicks, elbow jabs, punch, a pressing sensation in your abdomen as the babies move around in a limited space. You will also be able to sense these movements towards the end of the second trimester. But the mothers who are expecting a single baby will not be able to feel the foetal movements up until the third trimester.
Is It Possible to Feel Twins Kick or Move Separately?
Early in the second trimester, some mothers can feel their twins kick or move separately, as there is space in the uterus. The chances for this increases provided the babies are settled on different sides, or one below the other in a sandwich position. However, there is an equal possibility that mothers are not able to distinguish between their twins as they spend most of the time huddled together, and a set of 8 limbs (4 hands and 4 feet) are intertwined.
How to Count Twins' Kicks in the Womb?
Once you start sensing foetal movements, your gynaecologist will advise you to keep track of it. This phase is very exciting for an expectant mother as she can observe the baby's general pattern of movement. The following are the steps to calculate the number of kicks:
Observe the movements twice a day. It should be checked both in the morning and in the evening. Make a note of the time when you feel movements such as flutters, kicks, rolls etc.
You can stop counting when you reach 10 movements.
If you observe that it takes an interval of more than an hour to reach 10 movements, go for a walk, munch a snack or drink some fruit juice and then count again.
If you don't feel any movements for two hours or more, get in touch with your doctor.
With twins, there is a space restriction compared to single babies, so it is even more important for the mother to note the movement patterns. Keep a tab of the movements, in vis-à-vis daily activities such as while having meals. If deviations are noted, contact your practitioner.
Should You Worry If Twin Foetal Movement Stops?
Towards the later stages of pregnancy, you reassure yourself by counting the foetal movements. However, there may be a period of lull, when the babies go silent. However, this is not a matter of immediate concern. It may just be a case when there is less room for their acrobatics. But if you notice a marked decrease in the movements, you should see a doctor immediately. The doctor will check if there is a discordant growth-a case when one baby outgrows the other. Another case could be a low level of amniotic fluid. Again, discordant growth need not signal a problem and is quite common. Only in case of a significant difference in size between the twins, it is a matter of concern. This can be caused by:
Nutritional deficiency due to a problem with the umbilical cord or placenta.
Twin to twin transfusion syndrome.
How to Make Sure That The Babies Are Fine
When you are expecting twins, you will be anxious about the health of your babies. In case you have trouble feeling baby movements, your healthcare provider will suggest numerous ways to ensure the safety of your twins.
Your doctor will have you scanned more often if you are pregnant with twins. The ultrasound may be used to assess foetal growth. Another common way of assessing foetal health is Non-Stress Test (NST). It is a simple procedure in which the heart rate of the foetus is monitored to get an understanding of its health.
Once you reach the 16th week of your pregnancy, you will experience movements (flutterings) in your womb. These will be the first movements of your babies. It is known as 'quickening'. If you are prima, you may not feel the movements this early. The early detection of foetal movements depends upon numerous things.
By 24 weeks, your twins will look like newborns and their sense of hearing will have developed. The movements of twins by 24 weeks may become one-sided at times, depending on the position of the babies which could change often. If the movements are felt for a period of 2 hours or more, then you must see a doctor immediately.
Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful experiences in a woman's life. In the case of a twin pregnancy, it is normal for a woman to get worried but you must not let those fears impact your health. If you face any problem, consult a doctor and you will have a happy pregnancy.

The Epitome of Purity - Bisleri, the Original Mineral Water Brand
Due to pollution, gulping down tap water or water from any contaminated source is dangerous. Carrying one’s own water bottle is a good idea, but it’s unmanageable to do so all the time because that water will get exhausted at some point, and bottled water will have to be bought. So, whenever I need to make a choice while buying a packaged water bottle, I have my eyes only on Bisleri.
Did you know that according to the Economic Times, Bisleri is deemed the #1 trusted brand in India? Well, when I came to know about it, I wasn’t shocked because the brand truly justifies it. I am really happy that I got an opportunity to discover the manufacturing process of Bisleri by visiting their manufacturing plant.
My Experience at the Bisleri Plant Visit
Being a mother, I have grown more conscious of the ingredients in the products that my kids are consuming. So, when it comes to packaged water, I have always preferred Bisleri because they are dedicated to providing safe and pure drinking water to their customers.
To be honest, I have always trusted the brand on their claims, but I never got an opportunity to visit their manufacturing plant and witness the whole manufacturing process. This time, my wish came true. There were a bunch of questions in my mind regarding the purity of the brand and their usage
of plastic – what’s a better way to get those answers than by yourself?
My daughter Angel accompanied me to the Bisleri plant visit because I thought it would be a great learning experience for her. But, children below 10 years of age are not allowed in the main plant. So, I left her in the play zone with the children of my fellow bloggers.
At the plant, we were provided with a headcover, shoe covers and gloves in order to maintain the hygienic environment of the plant. As I went inside, I saw how small and big water bottles were packaged and prepared.
It was a great learning experience for me – now, if I’m paying INR 20 for a 1 litre Bisleri bottle, I actually know what has gone behind manufacturing it!
Key Learnings From the Plant Visit
Before going for the Bisleri plant visit, I had a plethora of questions that I always wanted to ask the brand manufacturers. And, guess what – all of them were answered! Here are the key things I learnt at the Bisleri plant:
Every single Bisleri water bottle has to undergo a 10-step quality process
and over 114 quality tests before it comes to us.
With A-1 quality, they have the lowest production and distribution costs
in order to serve their buyers better.
Why Bisleri Stands Apart From Other Packaged Water Bottles
Bisleri has gained a reputation over the last 50 years as the leading brand in the packaged mineral water industry. Their strong distribution network and quality of water have helped Bisleri emerge as one of the most trusted brands.
Here are a few reasons why I still prefer Bisleri over other brands:
The first and main reason is the quality of water by Bisleri. It is rightly a symbol of purity and goodness.
The bottle comes in different sizes, so the consumer has a lot of size.
Options to choose from according to their requirement.
The brand is affordable and provides top quality water to its customers.
The brand supports various causes associated with the environment, such as plastic recycling, ozone treatments, rain water harvesting, etc. So, buying a Bisleri bottle indirectly means you are supporting those causes as well.
Robust Purification Method Employed By Bisleri
As mentioned eariler, the purification method adopted by Bisleri is a 10-step quality process that includes 114 tests to ensure the quality of the water is high. During my visit to the Bisleri plant, I studied these steps closely. So, here is a brief description of the process – it will make you trust Bisleri even more!
STEP 1: Collection of Water
In this step, the water is collected from reliable water sources. This water undergoes around 11 tests to ensure that it is fit for consumption.
STEP 2: Ozonisation
In this step, ozone helps kill the micro-bacteria from the raw water.
STEP 3: Sand Filtration
This step removes any sand and dust particles from the water up to the size of 30 microns. It includes 3 tests.
STEP 4: Carbon Filtration
Carbon filtration is a double filtration process that helps remove dust particles while ensuring the odor, color, and taste do not change.
STEP 5: Reverse Osmosis
In this step, 2 tests are performed to remove excess salts and minerals to seal the purity of the water.
STEP 6: Mineralisation
In this step, vital minerals i.e., magnesium and potassium are added to the water. That renders a little bit of sweetness to it, making it healthy for consumption.
STEP 7: Micron-filtration
This step carries 2 tests that assist to remove the tiniest particles up to the size of 0.25 microns.
STEP 8: Re-ozonisation
This step locks the purity and goodness of the water.
STEP 9: Careful Bottling
This step contains around 12 tests. Bisleri makes sure that the plastic bottles used to package the water are blown on site so as to avoid any contamination of their product.
STEP 10: Quality Control
After all the steps, the Bisleri bottle is sealed properly with a label that contains all the required information i.e., manufacturing date, batch code, manufacturing location, and time. They guarantee to deliver the best product to their customers.
Is Bisleri Safe for a Child?
Bisleri’s packaged drinking water is an amalgamation of minerals, hygiene, purity and goodness. What else would you want from a packaged mineral water bottle? They keep a constant check on the colour, taste, pH levels of the water while meeting the legal requirement of the water – having magnesium,
calcium, and alkalinity just to name a few!
I’m sure there are many moms out there who are bothered by the consumption of water from plastic water bottles. But this 10-step purification process makes Bisleri an excellent and safe option for children and adults alike.
Bisleri is not just a regular packaged drinking water brand – it is so much more. Each drop in the bottle is clinically tested by professionals – that makes it 100% safe for consumption! The brand ensures hygiene and purity and does not compromise with the quality of the water.
All these qualities in one water bottle? Sounds amazing, right? Whenever you’re going for a holiday or a getaway, quench your thirst with Bisleri. Because #HarPaaniKiBottleBisleriNahi!
You can book a visit to the plant and check the veracity of all these claims that Bisleri makes. Simply click on https://www.bisleri.com/book-a-visit

The Benefits of Helping Preschoolers Understand and Discuss Their Emotions
Your baby has grown up entered the terrible two's. Every emotion is overwhelming for him and he most likely will not know how to express how he is feeling. Learn some tried and tested ways to help your child understand and express their emotions in a healthy way.
They aren't called the terrible two's and three's for no reason. Or for that matter even the fearsome fours. All these scary terms boil down to the exact same thing – your child hasn't learn to recognize and deal with emotions just yet. This more often than not leads to tantrums and major meltdowns that leave you feeling helpless, frustrated or even anxious!
Some may say they'll grow out of it and indeed they will, but is it wise to just “let them be” or are there some life lessons to be taught at this fragile stage? Are there some long-term benefits to be learnt at this point?
Studies prove by both theory and practicality that emotional intelligence begins to develop at a very young age. If children are taught to find solutions to overwhelming emotions, they can gain a lifelong skill at a tiny age. It is proved that such children are less aggressive, kinder adults who are better at academics as well.
There are a few conscious things caregivers can do to help children in this stage of life.
1. Give Emotions A Name
Helping your child put down a concept or association to the image can help him deal better with it. Observe the behaviour, whether it be yelling, crying or not speaking at all, and take the child through a 'reflection' process. Ask then why they are behaving that way, what made them unhappy or angry. They will learn to associate different stimuli with certain emotions.
2. Make Emotions 'Normal'
Try not to classify emotions as good or bad at the age when children are learning to deal with them. Every emotion at this stage is overwhelming and so normalizing every emotion helps to comfort them when they are angry, sad or fearful. It helps them know that every human being feels these emotions, helping them get a better perspective. Give them examples of when you felt the same way and how you reacted. And find a solution to the emotion that helps comfort and reduce the burden of it.
3. Develop Acceptable Solutions
Teaching a child what actions are appropriate to an overwhelming emotion is as important as teaching them the emotion itself. Help them to verbalise what is okay and what isn't. This is also a good time to teach them “time outs”. For e.g. taking a break by yourself when you are angry with someone or napping when tiredness makes you irritable.
4. Read Picture Books
This doesn't seem like the obvious choice but reading fiction actually helps a child understand empathy. Apart from that, the pictorial representations help them understand emotions through illustrations better.
Did you use any of these methods to help your child emote better? Did you have other techniques of helping your child express his emotions in a healthy manner? Do write in and let us know! Read more

Children are God's Blessings and Rare Gifts to Mothers
All children are God's rare gifts to all mothers. My girl, Karthika Lakshmi is a wonderful gift in our beautiful life. My motherhood phase is going happily after the arrival of my daughter. She always wakes up at 5 am every day, almost before all the other members of our family wake up. She plays indoor games, especially with her dolls. She smiles beautifully. Sometimes, she cries because of going outside with bike. She likes dressing and wearing beautiful dresses. She likes massages with coconut oil. She always eats calmly without giving any trouble to the family members. She always goes to the temple with her grandmother. She even goes out sometimes with her grandparents, mostly with her grandfather. She likes drinking milk. My daughter Karthika Lakshmi is a very active girl. She always watches serial with us. She also listens to beautiful music with me. My daughter Karthika Lakshmi has two elder cousin brothers, Rishi Varun and Sai Vasanthi. She plays games with them. She has given me a lot of joy and happiness with her cute behaviour.
Being a mother, I prefer to give her nutritious food like oatmeal, badam, full-fat milk, and the mixed nutrition powder with brown millets, toor dal, chana dal, kaju, badam, oats, pasta, corn and other healthy nutrients. Sometimes, I give her popcorn and jowar flakes, wheat flakes. These are very healthy foods. Breastfeeding a baby is also important. Breastfeeding plays a major role in the life of mothers as well. Breastfeeding is best for babies till two years of age as a mother's milk has lots of vitamins and minerals that helps a baby grow healthily. Breastfeeding useful in preventing some health diseases like asthma, cough, cold, motions, fever and pains and so on. Breastfeeding milk has lots of vitamins like Iron, vitamin D and rich in calcium and folic acid, B complex vitamins and so on.

Contribution – M For MotherhoodThis post is for all the new mommy’s out there!!
This is a tribute cum life experience for all the lovely ladies or more particular to be “Mothers” who have been verge of life altering experience post giving birth. As newly crowned mother, we are new to almost everything. By the time we ready to cope with up physical changes in our body, our relative or friends will usually come up with weird parameter of judging motherhood.
We then being weep that how can someone judge us when they may not even know, what we went through or are still going through as everyone body is different. We then continuously reflect on their belief and judgement, which make our heads churn. The inverse is when we start getting conscious to such weird advices of our society.
To sound more commanding, the so called umpires of Motherhood have draw out unwritten norms for a lady to transform into a perfect mother. After careful analysis, I feel those norms no more then the fiction of their lopsided imagination. Let me quote some example or personal experience like – ‘oh the baby is not sleeping well’ she may not be having enough milk, she does not gaining much weight, she croes a lot, and the list goes on.
Being living in a society where in people always criticize a women if she is mother and a working women. No matter how much we try to manage everything but society will see the other side of the coin. Being mother is definitely not the end of road, but it is the start of new beginning.
While we gradually adapt and evolve to the new life, but the controversial point remains as to how can some of us be so insensitive in the grab of teaching others.
I am mother of 10 month old baby girl and transformation from a carefree girl to a growing mother. The moment i saw those two pink lines till today, while I am writing this blog, I clearly recall that evening, I freaked out. I am trying and trying level best like everyone else to be good mother.
Most of us have to assume the role of mother and homemaker at some point of time and its the beautiful part of human evolution.
In my point of view, My honest rant is that we just want some guidance and friendly advices. So all the experienced and traditional but judgemental ones, who are being sarcastic all the time, support us, guide us with warmth to be a good mothers and good human being. With load of hope , sincerely pray that in trying times, we accept and guide each other as pillar of support with open mind and spread positivity.
Listen to everyone advice, but do what your heart say!! As a mother you know what is right for child.
