How To Teach Kids To Pump A Swing In The Playground
As adults things like cycling, swinging and sliding down a slide may seem like no-brainers, but for a little child, these tasks are much more daunting! If you want to teach your child to use a swing, you first need to understand how to break down the motion. Let's look at how your child can learn to pump a swing with ease.
As your child turns 4-years-old, he can keep himself in motion on a swing all by himself. Here, we list some easy tips that can help you teach your kid to pump a swing in the playground. Scroll down to discover them.
1. Choose A Low-Hanging Swing
Initially, make your preschooler sit on a low-hanging swing so that he can sit on and get off it all by himself. Being on a low-hanging swing makes it easy for your preschooler to reach the ground to jump off, which otherwise was difficult with a high-hanging swing.
2. Feel The Motion Of The Swing Alone
Once your preschooler sits on the swing, tell him to hold and pull on the chains or ropes of the swing. Now, ask him to lean forward and backward all by himself by holding onto the ropes. When this motion continues, the swing tends to move with the weight of the child, slowly increasing in speed.
3. Bend Knees And Kick The Ground Backwards
As your preschooler learns to move the swing slightly by leaning forward and backwards, teach him to enjoy long swings forward and backwards. Tell him to bend his knees and hit the ground with his toes and ball of the foot backwards. This will make his swing propel forward at a greater distance. As your preschooler swings far forward, he is bound to swing back automatically. As he swings back, tell him to bend his knees and continue enjoy swinging.
4. Use ‘Kick and Bend’ Trick To Pump a Swing
If your kid is finding it difficult to learn to swing easily, try this trick. Stand at a safe distance in front of your preschooler who is sitting on the swing, stretch your hands flat forward, and tell your little swinger to kick your hand. This will make your preschooler put his feet up high in the air and then bend his legs to pump the swing. Make another grownup person to stand at a safe distance behind your swinging preschooler. Tell your little swinger to bend his knees as he swings backwards, after hitting your hand in the front. Repeating ‘Kick and Bend’ trick will train your preschooler to pump a swing on his own and enjoy swinging without your assistance soon.
5. Demonstrate Swinging
Watching others swinging and learn to swing simultaneously is a brilliant idea to teach your preschooler pump a swing all by himself. If you find an empty swing next to your preschooler’s swing on the playground, sit on the empty swing and demonstrate step-by-step swinging to your kid. First, demonstrate slow motion swinging and then fast swinging. Tell your preschooler to follow your lead and swing side-by-side to help him understand the technique till he gets it.
6. Praise Your Child

From being a happy, friendly and fun loving woman, I stopped my job and preferred staying at home all day. Even car rides made me vomit. Not only, did I not like going out but I did not like people coming home to meet
me too. I wanted to stay alone. And everyone said why you are depressed; it was a planned pregnancy. Yes, I wanted it. But my dear family and friends, though it was very much what I wanted and I was happy to conceive I was still under pregnancy depression. It is then I realised that depression is not with what you have and what desires are fulfilled, but it is to do with hormones in the body. The day I delivered my baby, I was back to my old self with a bang. Thankfully postpartum depression did not get to me but trust me that is very common too. I openly discuss with family and friends as when I was in distress and realised that many of my friends were in the same phase but never disclosed to anyone as they knew they would not
be understood. The most common response is that " oh! She has everything in life then why is she depressed. We are struggling but still happy."
We need to understand depression is not about having things in life. It is a medical disorder, and it needs family and friends support and doctors help. I am a doctor, but it took my depression to realise this. Be supportive friends.

Ingredients
For the broth (for 12 serves)
1 tbsp (tablespoon) olive oil
1 large onion
2 stalks celery, including some leaves
2 large carrots
1 bunch green onions (scallions)
8 cloves garlic, minced
8 sprigs fresh parsley
6 sprigs fresh thyme
2 bay leaves
1 tsp (teaspoon) salt
2 quarts water
For the vegetable soup
1 tsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped lengthwise
2 carrots, shredded
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
4-5 celery leaves
1 cup cabbage, finely cut lengthwise
4-5 fennel leaves
8-10 asparagus spears
1/2 cup green peas
1 bay leaf
2-3 sprigs fresh thyme
4 cups vegetable broth
Salt to taste
1 tsp pepper for seasoning
Method
For the vegetable stock/broth
Step 1
Scrub and chop vegetables into 1-inch chunks. Greater the surface area, the more quickly vegetables will yield their flavor.
Step 2
Heat oil in a soup pot.
Step 3
Add onion, celery, carrots, scallions, garlic, thyme, parsley, and bay leaves.
Step 4
Cook over high heat for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
Step 5
Add salt, water and allow to boil.
Step 6
Skim and discard any foam from the surface.
Step 7
Simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes or more until the vegetables are soft, and the stock is flavorful.
Step 8
Remove from heat.
Step 9
Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer set over a large saucepan.
Step 10
Discard the solid vegetables.
Step 11
Stir in the salt if required. Use immediately.
Step 12
For later use, refrigerate in airtight container, for up to 3 days or freeze in small containers for up to 1 month.
For the vegetable soup
Step 13
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
Step 14
Add the onion, season with salt and pepper.
Step 15
Cook, until translucent, about 5 minutes with occasional stirring.
Step 16
Insert the carrots and garlic, season with salt and pepper, and cook.
Step 17
Stir occasionally, until the garlic is fragrant, about 2 minutes.
Step 18
Add the celery and other hearty vegetables of your choice such as cabbage and fennel and the bay leaf and thyme.
Step 19
Season again with salt and pepper and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Step 20
Add the broth and any faster-cooking vegetables such as asparagus and peas.
Step 21
Let the soup come to a boil.
Step 22
Reduce the heat to low and gently simmer, uncovered until the vegetables are thoroughly cooked, about 15 to 25 minutes.
Step 23
Taste and season with additional salt and pepper as needed.

First Response to Help Your Child Cope with Trauma
Life throws up many experiences. Some experiences and events are happy; others sad and then again some are shocking and traumatic. Trauma is an unexpected, sudden event that leaves one in shock. Children too are bound to experience trauma in some form or the other. A child’s age, personality, family support and prior exposure to trauma determine how a child ends up coping with trauma.
When faced with a child who has experienced trauma, remember that no two children react to a traumatic event in the same way. In this situation, it's imperative that you help your child with a suitable first response. But in order to do this, you must be able to spot the signs of trauma.
Signs of trauma
Irritation, sadness, anger, guilt or shame
A state of confusion or worry
Self blame
Clingy
Shunning other people
Disobedience
Flouting rules
Some children may also experience stomach aches or headaches. Others might be unable to do simple tasks like going to the toilet or dressing up on their own. If you see that your child has fever, is sweating profusely, has a rapid pulse, is dizzy or is unable to respond to you, then call an ambulance, or rush to the emergency room of the nearest hospital -it is imperative that you seek medical care at once.
First response
Your first response helps your child to cope after a traumatic event:
Check for signs of shock, injury or illness
Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if required.
Warmth, comforting hugs and words help. Keep saying, “It's going to be alright” or the equivalent.
Don’t be alarmed if your child refuses to eat or drink immediately after a traumatic event. A smaller appetite or lack of it in this situation is normal.
A safe and secure place for your child to read, play or draw under supervision is the next thing to look for.
If possible try to find a space that is away from reminders of the event.
Listen to your child. Do not stifle him if he wants to speak. Be a good listener.
Give your child his favorite toy or blanket. Just anything familiar and comforting to hold on to.
Encourage your child to spend time with other people like family and friends. This will help restore normalcy and help him realize others are around for support.
Spending time talking about the event in a calm manner will help your child cope better. If you can talk about a stressful event calmly some semblance of normalcy will be restored for your child.
Allow your child to care for other people such as siblings and friends. Keep him away from media as much as you can.
If required let your child talk to a counselor.
Finally, remember each child is different. Do not rush your child when he is coping with trauma. A lot of patience, warmth and understanding on your part will help your child. Your first response is critical and most likely the determining factor of how your child will cope with trauma in future. Most children are understandably very upset when faced with trauma but the good news is that most of them recover and are able to get on with their lives. Read more

I am Vaishnavi. I am 32 years old now. And I have been married for 5 years. We have been planning pregnancy for 3 years but nothing was falling into place despite all investigations being normal.
So we decided to go for IVF. After multiple investigations and injections, 2 cycles of embryo transfer were done and both of them failed. We were so depressed, so depressed that we hardly knew what to do next. Though my husband was very supportive, I was so worried about going out with friends, to attend family functions etc. I would fear if anyone would ask me how many kids you have, aren't you going for any treatment. I would feel low in front of my cousins who had got pregnant without any issues and delivered babies, though they are younger to me.
Somehow we came out of failed ivf and decided to go to another ivf centre. All the tests were repeated and again embryos were freezed. They left a gap of 1 month before embryo transfer. And that 1 month, changed our lives. I missed my periods for the first time. To our astonishment my pregnancy test showed THE SECOND RED LINE. We were over the moon. But still we could not be hundred percent relieved. We always had a sense that something might go wrong.
Everything went on well for a few days. Then I had a episode of bleeding at 7 weeks. We were frightened to death. But by God's grace, my little boy was strong enough to sustain it. I was told there is small blood clot and was advised complete rest. Still I was having spotting on and off. Each time it would panic us so much. But I had complete trust over God. He need not have given my baby to us at that point in my Life. So I was sure he would not take it away from me.
The spotting settled slowly by 10 weeks. The second trimester went on well. The third trimester was again a roller coaster. I was not able to feel the baby movements on and off. So my husband bought a fetal doppler and we would check baby's heartbeat two to three times a day to be sure he is fine inside.
Finally the day came. I was told my cervix is not that favourable for normal delivery. I dint want to take the least chance. I opted for a caeserean section. My husband came inside the OT. We were so happy to welcome our little champ into this world with a big cry. That moment on may 28,2020, 5.12am will be the happiest moment in our lives. Read more
