36 Good Habits - That Parents Must Teach Their Children
Children look up to their parents through their lives. Parents are always a point of reference for their children, someone they turn to for guidance whenever they run into trouble, and children pick up this habit early on in their lives. As they grow, children imitate their parents' behaviour and actions, and parents are the role models for their kids. Their wisdom and habits inevitably pass on to kids. Thus, it is important to teach the children to differentiate between good and bad habits, and choose the good ones.

Must-Have Healthy Habits For Children
Inculcating the right manners and healthy habits for children can feel like an uphill battle. But you must be patient and lead them towards the right path. The points described below can be considered healthy habits which kids must have:
1. Healthy Eating
Pro Tip: Make food colourful.
Kids are mostly inclined towards demanding more fast food, chips, sweets, biscuits, and chocolates. You need to make them believe that even healthy food can taste equally good. They can be served a homemade version of noodles, pasta, cakes, cookies, and pizza too.
In order to make children develop this healthy habit, go the colourful way – make it a target to eat each colour of the rainbow once a week, which means eating foods of different colours in a meal. Not only does it have health benefits, but also ensures that the kids have fun eating. Parents should set a healthy example by eating regular, nutritious, and well-balanced food.
2. Physical Activity
Pro Tip: Don’t encourage sitting, move often.
Allowing your children to sit and get comfortable on the sofa and watching television would be a big mistake on your part as a parent. Do not let your kids get into a sedentary lifestyle. Encourage them to get them going, maybe for a walk or exercise or send them to play outdoors. Plan a family activity, make it something fun, and get your kids involved. Educate your kids that being a couch potato, has adverse effects on the health. Some of the health hazards a sedentary lifestyle poses are as follows:
Obesity
Trouble sleeping
Attention disorders
Emotional and social problems
3. Focus on Food-Nutrition Labels, Not Designer Ones
Pro Tip: Encourage children to read and understand food labels.
At a certain age, especially around their teenage years, your kids get interested in the labels of their clothes. Start educating your children about the more important labels that they should take notice of from a young age – food labels. Once they get into this habit, encourage them to learn about the nutritional value of food in the same way.
Show them their favourite packaged foods and point out the vital information on the nutrition labels. Make it a habit for them to read those labels, analyse the nutritional value, and then decide its worth. Advise them to focus on key ingredients such as the amount of saturated and unsaturated fats, sugar, calories, and carbs. Your conscious efforts will help develop healthy habits, which they will carry for their lifetime.
4. Enjoy Family Meals Together
Pro Tip: Make it a priority to enjoy dinner time together.
In the hectic life that we live today, there is hardly any quality time left to spend with family and elders. A busy work life could end up meaning you are unable to sit with children and listen to their stories and personal issues. Make it a priority to enjoy dinner time together with all your family members. You can discuss a number of things and share your views with each other; this will have a long-lasting impact on your children. Other benefits of eating together include the following:
Children start getting comfortable and adjust well in the family
Children develop good eating habits and avoid junk food when with elders
Bonds get stronger
5. Healthy Hydration
Pro Tip: Drink water, not soda.
Drinking soft drinks is the most common trait adopted by small children emulating elders. You need to guide your children and reinforce the importance of drinking water and avoiding soda.
Simply tell the kids that water is healthy and helps to get rid of a number of diseases; whereas soft drinks are unhealthy, as they have a lot of sugar content and add up calories, causing weight issues. Educate them that water is a vital resource, and should be taken in good amounts to maintain proper hydration. When your kids realise how important water is for their bodies, they are sure to choose it over unhealthy aerated drinks.
6. Cleaning Up The Mess
Pro Tip: Provide an organised environment for your growing children.
Cleanliness must be taught to children by default early on in life. Start by organising things properly around kids. When they get accustomed to seeing things in an orderly fashion, they will want to keep them that way too. Once they are old enough, you can assist them and allot time to clean up the mess and place them appropriately. By doing it regularly, they will soon learn and make an effort to organise their things themselves.
7. Be Responsible with Money
Pro Tip: Give them a budget.
As soon as your children become responsible enough to use money to go and buy things, you can start educating them about the value of your hard-earned money. You can get your children into the habit of saving money, by giving them pocket money once in a while, or keep a piggy bank with them.
Give them a budget and encourage them to manage their expenses and save money. This way, your children will learn the value of money and start saving.
8. Sharing is Caring
Pro Tip: Start by encouraging sharing at home.
Children should know the value of certain objects, learn to be grateful, and be modest enough to share it with those who cannot afford it. Also teach them about the intangible things that can be shared, such as emotions, feelings, and stories. Children will learn to share with their family first – parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, extended family, and then with other people. This attitude of sharing will make him or her a better person.
9. Don’t Litter Public Spaces
Pro Tip: Carry a plastic bag to collect your waste; bring it home and dispose it in your dustbin.
Raise your children to be civilised and responsible citizens. Explain that public spaces are not for littering and that one should throw waste into the nearest dustbin. Help them develop this simple habit, and ask them to follow it in all places, as it will help them develop into better people. Make it a habit not to litter, and your children are sure to follow your example. Always look for dustbins to throw things when outside the house. You can carry a small plastic bag with you when you step out of the house and collect all your waste in it – empty water bottles, paper napkins, etc. Bring it home and dispose it in the dustbin instead of simply leaving it at the table in the restaurant, or tossing it on the side of the road, or out the car window.
10. Be Courteous
Pro Tip: Treat people the way you would want your children to treat them – with respect, and courteously.
Being courteous is a virtue admired by everyone. Teach your kids to respect people, be it elders or young ones. Explain to them that even if they encounter someone they are not very fond of, they should be polite and part ways in a decent manner. They should be calm and cordial with everyone. These qualities will stay with them all their life, and they will be always looked upon with respect. Start by treating your children with respect first, and you will see they will pick up on this habit on their own. Be courteous with the maid. Children see, children do.
11. Be Unbiased
Pro Tip: Encourage and foster multicultural friendships.
Children are born innocent and unbiased, and the distinction is a part of social conditioning. As a parent, all you need to do is keep your children away from the tendency to discriminate. Guide them to be unbiased and treat all people equally, be it rich or poor, friend or enemy. You can encourage them to be friends with children of any religion or caste.
12. Do Not Harm Animals or Birds
Pro Tip: Show children documentaries and animal shows on TV.
Children usually get excited around animals and birds. Some feel attracted, some fear them, some get defensive, while some stay calm. They should be educated that animals and birds are living creatures that communicate in their own ways and can be friendly. They should learn to differentiate between creatures that are harmful and those which are not. Advise them to stay away from harmful ones and be kind and friendly to pets. You can educate them about the same by showing them documentaries and animal shows on TV.
13. Exercise Regularly
Pro Tip: Enroll your children for some sport.
Set a routine for yourself and your family to spend some time together for a physical activity such as walking, jogging, swimming, exercising, or doing yoga at home. Exercise will prove beneficial to the entire family in the long run. Starting it early in the children’s routine will keep them active, fit, and flexible. It will help set a healthy lifestyle for your children. Add some excitement to your workout by putting on music. The best way to do this is to enroll your child in some sport. It will teach them valuable life lessons too, the biggest being that of sportsmanship.
14. Do Not Criticise or Bully Anyone
Pro Tip: Always point out mistakes and flaws constructively.
Criticism can make or break young children. At a young age, not everyone is wise enough to take critical comments positively. Parents need to keep a watch and closely guide their children on their interaction and mannerisms. Children should be made to understand that criticism can hurt others, hence they should not speak ill about others. Unnecessary teasing or bullying someone you hardly know just for the sake of fun is wrong and not acceptable. Make it a point to never ever speak ill of family members in front of your child.
15. Be Honest
Pro Tip: Do not lie to your children. Even white lies are lies. Try and be as honest as possible, at all times.
Honesty is a very important virtue and needs to be enforced in kids from childhood. Being a parent, you are the role model for your children. Your actions and words have the greatest impact on them, positive as well as negative. Be honest at all times, especially in the presence of kids. Motivate them to speak the truth under all circumstances.
16. Patience and Perseverance
Pro Tip: Encourage them to take up gardening, or cooking.
It is rightly said ‘Patience is a virtue’, as those who are patient can be at peace, and in today's stressful world, peace is what everyone seeks. Inculcate the trait of being patient early in your children, so they will grow to be calm and peaceful. Teach them to relax, keep calm, and wait for their turn or for certain things to happen at their own pace. Assure them that patience certainly pays off, and any adverse situation can be dealt with at ease. Encourage them to take part in activities such as gardening, or cooking, where results are not instant, and patience is required.
17. Pay Gratitude
Pro Tip: Cultivate the habit of praying twice a day.
Foster a humble attitude in your children and teach them to be thankful for all things, big and small. Cultivate the habit of praying twice a day, after waking up in the morning and before going to bed at night. Follow it yourself, and your kids will learn from you
18. Wash Hands
Pro Tip: Teach them about germs and diseases that they can pick up due to unclean hands.
Washing one’s hands before and after meals is the most common etiquette taught to students from kindergarten. Let them know that washing hands can prevent common diseases such as flu, cold, and other infections. You need to teach them the following basic rules:
Wash your hands before and after meals or after playing in sand
Use clean dry towels, or maybe tissues, to dry hands
Use antibacterial hand wash
19. Brushing Twice A Day
Pro Tip: Do it together – brush your teeth along with your child.
Oral hygiene is very important and requires to be taken good care from early childhood. The habits imparted early on will stay for a long time. Often kids get lazy when it comes to brushing their teeth, but this routine task should not be taken lightly. As a reward, you may occasionally treat them with their favourite sweets. Educate them about the proper ways of brushing:
Brush daily and twice a day
Gargle post meals – This helps avoid bad breath and cavities
Floss the teeth at appropriate times
Clean the tongue using a tongue cleaner
Do not share your toothbrush
20. Clean Ears
Pro Tip: Do it as part of drying up after a bath.
Ears are one of the most vital organs of your body. Neglecting the cleanliness of your ears may lead to a lot of discomfort and even infections. One must take extra care to clean the ears regularly right from infancy. The outer ear should be cleaned with water and wiped with dry towel daily. As children grow, you can teach them to clean their ears themselves.
21. Daily Showers
Pro Tip: Shower twice a day during summers.
Showering is a basic necessity and is recommended for people of all ages. It needs to be done the first thing in the morning after waking up. You can make your children shower twice during the hot days of summer. Alternatively, your kids should take a shower when they come home after playing outdoors. Showering rejuvenates the skin and makes them feel fresh, ready for the day, as well as for a good night’s sleep.
22. Keep Hair Clean
Pro Tip: Teach children the proper way of combing their hair.
Kids need to keep their hair clean. The scalp and hair often get dirty during travelling or playing outdoors. They should wash their hair often, minimum once in two or three days. This will keep them safe and away from lice infestations, dandruff, and excess hairfall. Make it a habit to apply oil on their scalp regularly before washing. Also make sure you use a comb that touches the scalp too while combing their hair. This improves blood circulation in the scalp, and promotes healthy hair growth.
23. Keeping Nails Short
Pro Tip: Explain to them how their nails can cause germs to enter the body
Babies often tend to put their fingers in their mouth, so it is necessary to keep the nails clean and free from dirt. As children grow, you can coach them about the necessity of keeping their nails short and clean. You can explain to them how their nails can cause germs to enter the body through scratching or through the mouth, thus making them sick.
As your children grow old enough to join school, you need to start coaching them about the value of good health and good habits. Apart from the above-listed healthy habits, here are some essential ones for school children to follow:
24. “Please”, “Thank You”, and “Sorry”
Pro Tip: Use these words as often as you can, with and in front of your children.
You should teach your children the three magical words “Please”, “Thank you” and “Sorry”, which will help them tackle many issues with ease. The habit of using these golden words also makes one respected and admired in society. Your children will come across as polite and warm-hearted people. Practise using these words with your kids often, and soon they will use these greetings frequently.
25. Helping Others
Pro Tip: Encourage children to help one person everyday.
Raise your kids to have a helpful nature. Show them the path of humility and generosity. Encourage them to provide a helping hand to those in need whenever and wherever possible. Do your part; help people, be it a friend or a stranger, in presence of your kids, but at the same time, caution them to be careful with strangers.
26. Having A Healthy and Positive Mind-Set
Pro Tip: Inculcate optimism.
Kids are very sensitive and get discouraged easily by small things or when things don’t go their way. It is very important that you get involved and talk to them so you are aware of what your children are going through and what they think about, so they don’t get into any negative self-talk. Avoid false praise; instead, ensure timely acknowledgement of their achievements and efforts. You can help kids develop self-esteem by assuring them of their capabilities and unique qualities and stress that they are loved no matter what. Try to develop their thinking to be logical and practical, so they can have a positive mindset and think accordingly when faced with challenging situations throughout their life.
27. Spend Time with Friends
Pro Tip: Organise play-dates on weekends.
It is said that friendships made in school stay for longer, maybe even for a lifetime. This is because children have innocent minds; they make friends without any selfish motives. And at a young age, friends play a very important role in the social development of your children. Children learn valuable life skills such as communication, socialising, cooperation, problem solving, and teamwork by being with friends.
During teenage and adulthood, good friends become a part of your kids’ support system. Encourage your children to make friends and spend time socialising and relaxing with them.
28. Don’t Skip Breakfast
Pro Tip: Ensure they have a nutritious, healthy start to the day.
Breakfast is the most important meal for all ages. It is especially mandatory for children and school-going kids, as it kick-starts the brain, metabolism, and body functions and provides energy throughout the day. You can provide your kids high-fibre cereals in their breakfast, as they help reduce the risk of diabetes and heart diseases. Getting used to breakfast will prove beneficial for them in their adulthood. Let them know the harmful consequences that skipping breakfast has, and reiterate that not eating in the morning increases the chances of getting obese.
29. Table Manners
Pro Tip: Start early, and encourage independence.
After a certain age, children insist on having meals themselves. Though they may like holding spoons and forks, they fail to do so properly and create a mess instead. They need to be trained to eat on their own in the right manner. You may treat them as grown-ups and start showing them the etiquette of having meals in an appropriate way.
30. Engaging in Regular Physical Activity
Pro Tip: Dedicate 40 minutes to some sort of physical activity everyday.
Children should be kept physically active by engaging them in activities they find interesting, be it playing sports, music instrument, swimming or gymnastics. This habit will enhance the growth of your children in every way. Kids will stay healthy and alert; they will learn to be strong and may likely continue these activities in later adulthood. If your children are not keen on sports or dread going to gym class, keep encouraging them to try new things and expose them to other activities. Sooner or later, they will definitely find something challenging, pleasurable, and fun.
31. Read Every Day
Pro Tip: Make it a part of your children’s bedtime routine.
The best way to inculcate the love for reading in your children is to make it a part of your children’s playtime and bedtime routine. Choose books which would make reading a treat for your children. Make it a daily habit and maintain it, as it will help build the children’s self-esteem, enhance their reading skills, and develop their imagination, vocabulary, and creativity. It proves beneficial in improving relationship and communication with parents.
32. Value Time
Pro Tip: Encourage punctuality.
We are aware of the phrase “Time is money” and know the value of time as well as money. Children need to be taught to make proper use of time, learn to get ready on time, follow daily schedules, and be punctual.
Make them understand the need of being on time to school, because they may be punished for not being punctual. As a family, you may attend several functions or parties. Make sure you reach before or on time for every occasion, and as the children grow, they will inculcate the same habit.
33. Sleep On Time
Pro Tip: Set a regular bed-time routine.
Sleep is most crucial for a growing infant as well as for a developing child. You need to instil the routine “Early to bed, early to rise” in your children early on during their infancy. School-going kids need to be active and energetic every day, for which they require adequate sleep. Sleep helps the body retain all the energy lost during the day. Sleeping early will help your children get enough rest, making the kids feel fresh and active the next day.
Put your children to sleep early and sleep along with them. Having you close will make your children feel secure and have a sound sleep
Go to sleep daily at the same time; this will help set the pattern for the children, and they will learn to sleep on their own
Avoid letting your kids sleep for more than the required time at a stretch. If needed, the children can have a short nap during the afternoon
34. Accept Defeat
Pro Tip: Support them through their failures.
Children are prone to feel upset if they fail. It is your responsibility as a parent to support them and motivate them to take the defeat in a positive way and give their best next time. They need to be informed about life’s ups and downs and made to understand that not every defeat is permanent. It is not always about winning or losing. The effort you put in and the progress you achieve are important too.
35. Work Hard
Pro Tip: Teach your children that there are no shortcuts in life!
Enlighten your kids with the importance of working hard. Cultivate the habit of putting in their best efforts in whatever they do, be it reading, writing, or any constructive work. They should learn the fact that good luck alone does not favour success; it requires strong determination and hard work. You may give your example to your kids explaining how hard you work to earn a living.
36. No Smoking, Drinking, and Drugs
Pro Tip: Quit these habits yourself, and your child will follow suit.
Habits such as drinking, smoking, and drugs largely depend on the family background and upbringing. Ensure that you are fully involved in your children's lives, knowing their shortcomings and supporting them at every stage, as neglect and a lack of communication leave the vulnerable to external influences. You need to educate your kids about such unhealthy habits and teach them to keep away under all circumstances. Also, warn the kids against coming under the influence of peers. As a parent, you can help by firstly not drinking and smoking yourself.
You may teach your children discipline, but whether your child implements it or not will depend on how well you, as a parent, inculcate it in day-to-day life. Show them the right path and encourage them to stay on it, with positive reinforcement and praise.

Baby Sleeping On Tummy
The first twelve months of a newborn’s life are known to be the most fragile. Apart from the numerous infections, allergies, and conditions they may develop, they are also at risk of sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS. Sleeping on the tummy is believed to be one of the causes of SIDS.
Video: Baby Sleeping on Tummy - Is It Safe?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2uUdY-m5QU
Is It Safe For Baby To Sleep On Stomach?
It is theorised that a baby in the first twelve months of their life should not sleep on the stomach because they re-breathe their own air. This makes them breathe recycled air which contains less oxygen and reduces the functionality of the lungs. This can lead to SIDS. Thus, one risk of the baby sleeping on the stomach is fatality due to a lack of oxygen. It is recommended by doctors that parents be cautious not to let a baby sleeping on her front stay so for more than a few minutes.
When Can Babies Sleep On Their Tummies?
According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, the number of fatalities due to SIDS has reduced by 50% because the newborns have been directed to sleep on their backs for at least a year. This allows their respiratory system to strengthen and develop naturally. They can breathe in more oxygen, thus reducing the risk of SIDS. Even after a year, it is best to ensure that the babies do not sleep on their tummies for long durations.
What If My Baby Loves Sleeping On Stomach?
It is important to understand that a newborn does not have the motor skills required to turn onto their belly for the first four months. Once the baby does begin to turn over, it is essential to monitor the baby and their health especially during the time they spend on their belly while awake. Sleeping on the belly must be avoided at all costs for the first year of their lives. A newborn baby’s body has not yet developed the capacity to manage re-circulation of oxygen. The excessive carbon dioxide that is circulated back into the baby’s system when they sleep on their belly can prove fatal. If your baby cannot sleep on its back, contact a paediatric physician immediately.
If Your Baby Rolls Over On To Her Stomach, Should You Worry?
Studies conducted by KidsHealth show that most cases of SIDS occur during the first year of a newborn’s life - a majority of those cases being between two to six months. Babies with naturally lower body strength tend to roll over by the sixth month. This has its benefits, as babies who spend time on their bellies after the first six months while awake can build upper body strength to lift their heads off the ground faster.
Warning: It is essential to monitor the child during this period as SIDS is still a natural risk. Do not leave your baby on their belly unsupervised.
If your baby rolls both when awake and asleep, it could be safe as long as it is after the first six months. This still requires monitoring and precautions. After the first six months, if your baby rolls onto their belly when sleeping, it is critical to remove any impediments to air circulation. This means there should be no blankets, stuffed animals, toys, etc. inside the crib with them. Consult your doctor and take required precautions so that your baby rolling over in sleep doesn’t cause problems.
Baby Sleeping On Belly: Safe Sleeping Guidelines
There are multiple ways to ensure your baby is safe and well rested and that your baby’s sleeping position on the stomach doesn’t cause any harm.
Use a firm mattress: Using a firm mattress will ensure that your little one gets all the support she needs. Do not put her down on a pillow, waterbed, couch or any other soft surface as it may encumber the quality of the air she breathes in. Experts also recommend that you do not place anything inside the crib while your baby sleeps.
Remove bumper pads: These accessories are quite common and almost every crib will come with the option of having the pads fitted. However, it is recommended that you avoid installing these in your baby’s crib as they can be a suffocation hazard.
Don’t let your baby become too warm: Knowing the ideal temperature for your baby to sleep in can be daunting. However, if you feel comfortable in the room in short sleeved clothing, then the temperature is ideal. It is generally recommended to keep the room temperature between 23 and 25 degree Celsius.
Avoid covering the baby’s head: The light blankets you use for your baby should only cover her up to her chest with her arms outside the blanket. This ensures that the blanket doesn’t shift towards the baby’s head.
Use a pacifier: These devices can be a great tool to calm your baby enough to let her get superior quality sleep. However, if she is uncomfortable with it, or if it falls out while she sleeps, do not force it.
Tummy Time When Your Baby Is Awake
While sleeping on the belly is not recommended for babies, it is imperative that they lie on their bellies while they are awake. Use a firm and rigid surface with a mat on it to lay your baby on her stomach. According to Karen Sokal-Gutierrez, M.D., M.P.H., babies need to lie on their stomachs while they are awake as it lets them build upper body strength and helps them breathe better while sleeping.
Do not stress your baby with this activity. Lay her down only for three to five minutes at a stretch in the beginning. You can later increase the time as your baby gets used to it and builds the right strength for it.
Conclusion: A newborn baby can sleep most of the day. This is only interrupted when the baby needs to feed. This crucial part of an infant’s development should be managed with extreme care and caution. Ensure you speak to your primary health care physician and paediatric specialists for a thorough list of dos and don’ts of sleep habits for your baby. Read more

Raising Boys - Things to Keep in Mind for Mums and Dads
Young boys are energetic, loud, active and prone to being roughhouse, and getting them to listen to you all the time is challenging. The goal is how to raise a boy to be a good man who will turn out to be responsible, affectionate and full of character. Consider these tips for raising your boy.
Dos and Don't s When You Are Raising a Boy
Parents of boys understand very well that they can be quite a handful; however, with some clever parenting methods, it’s possible to ensure your boys grow up to be great men. Here are some tips on how to raise a boy correctly:
Dos
1. Monitor Their Aggression
There’s a growing trend of concern among parents lately about their boys are being drawn to violent toys such as guns, swords, weapons or violent video games. What parents perceive as violence when boys pretend to be killing a bad guy is something the child fantasises as saving the world. Pretend-play such as cops and robbers or zombie apocalypse that has fantasy aggression is normal for boys and is even useful in teaching them what is right from wrong. Surprisingly, these games also promote healthy friendships and build self-confidence. However, you need to monitor how much aggression is being expressed in the games. If your child is too rough, other kids may not want to play with him. This is a good time to teach him about empathy and fair play.
2. Let Them Have Their Rough and Tumble Play
Children are physical most of the time; it is a way in which they express their affection. Jumping off furniture, or a hug that seems more like a full body tackle, or rolling on each other in seemingly aggressive play comes quite natural to kids. Although it is exhausting to you, it’s normal and healthy for them. The rough and tumble play fosters positive relationships among children, boys included, and builds their physical intelligence. Then there will inevitably be moments you will have to take them to the emergency room for a stitch or treating bruises from a fall. Although no parent likes to see their child getting hurt, it’s not possible to cushion the whole world around them.
3. Inculcate Polite Behaviour
Part of building good behaviour in boys means you channelise their energies in more positive ways rather than trying to stifle it. Although trying to discipline your boy’s feisty behaviour can push you to your limits, it’s important to keep calm. Parents must at all times avoid responding with their own aggressive behaviour to their boy’s aggressive play. Severe scolding or spanking might curb their behaviour momentarily, but it is seen that children who are severely punished turn out to be aggressive in the long run. Therefore, adopt an approach where you praise them for their good behaviour and when they are well mannered and remind them of that whenever they misbehave. Show genuine interest in things they find appealing and ask them questions about it, whether they like collecting toys or bugs in a jar, stimulate deeper thinking to stop them from becoming impulsive.
4. Emphasise Kindness and Empathy
Boys are seen as 'naturally' rough, but that is mostly the product of society's rigid rules around masculinity. Thus, sensitivity can be taught to boys. To encourage their sensitive side to develop, show them the importance of kindness while playing with others by sharing their toys and being gentle with pets. Read them stories of great men in the past who worked for peace and justice in the world. Search for opportunities in your community such as a volunteer mentoring program where your boys can work with strong role models (both male and female) and learn from them. Explain to them the importance of putting themselves in the shoes of another to understand their pains; it is a start in building empathy in your boys. As the saying goes- Teaching your child not to step on the bug is just as important to the child as it is to the bug.
5. Go Easy on Obsessing Over the Dirt and Noise
When you are parenting kids, there’s no way you can stop them dirtying or muddying their clothes, shoes, toys or anything for that matter. The only way to achieve peace is to let it go, the dirt washes off eventually, but the memories of fun play is cherished for years. Trying to keep things perfectly clean is nothing short of torture for both you and your boys. Therefore, relax the rules a little and allow them to play in the mud as long as it is safe and healthy to do so. As for noise, you can allow them to play in a designated room upstairs or any other room away from your living room. If their noise levels are still too high, take them to a park or a playground so that they can run around and release all that energy.
Don'ts
1. Being an Over-controlling Parent
Boys are heuristic learners; that is, they learn better from their experience. Boys seldom listen to you when you tell them to not swing too high on the monkey bar in the playground. The painful lessons are ones that stick in their minds, and it’s a good idea to let them learn about risks from natural consequences. However, that doesn’t mean you let them charge into something recklessly. The trick is allowing them to experience smaller risks and its consequences that help them understand the varying levels of dangers associated with reckless action.
2 Not Teaching Him Early on About Being Gentle With Everyone
As children, boys can harmlessly play a little rough with their peers, mothers, siblings or friends, however as they get older and reach puberty most boys who are used to roughhousing may not realise that they could hurt someone inadvertently. It becomes absolutely vital then to not engage in roughhousing. They need to be taught from an early age to never to be rude to, hurt or disrespect anyone, especially women, starting from their mothers and sisters. This behaviour has to be reinforced by both the parents by educating them often about how good men behave. Parents should lead by example and tell boys that they should be gentle because older children, peers as well as adults do not enjoy being poked, yelled at, kicked or prodded even playfully.
3. Letting Him Skip Household Chores
Never let your boy skip household chores - it’s critical to engage him in the activity, so he can learn to take up responsibility. This is especially important when you’re going over everything crucial on how to raise a boy child as a single mother. Let him take part in everything from grocery shopping, to cooking and housekeeping.
4. Telling Him That Real Men Don’t Cry
Encourage emotional expression in boys; it’s always better for them to understand and express their emotions in a healthy way, which also includes crying. Learning how to better be in touch with their emotions is a critical skill they need before they can be kind and empathetic men.
5. Telling Him That Boys Don’t Get Scared
To build the right idea of bravery in your boys, they need to understand that everybody feels fear and it’s normal to do so. However, being brave is doing the right things, despite your fears and overcoming them.
Although it can be tricky to stay one step ahead of your son to do your best as a parent, being patient with him and allowing his natural energies to express itself while you direct it in constructive ways is the best way to go.

Multiple Pregnancy - Getting Pregnant with Twins or Triplets
If a woman is carrying more than one foetus the pregnancy is termed as a multiple pregnancy. The early discovery of multiple pregnancies can greatly help the soon-to-be parents, to prepare themselves for the arrival of their children.
What is Multiple Pregnancy?
Multiple pregnancies, as the name suggests, is a pregnancy in which the mother carries more than one foetus in the uterus. The most common type of multifetal pregnancy is twins, where there are two babies developing simultaneously in the womb. Rarely, there are three or four foetuses developing in a single pregnancy.
Understanding the Causes
The formation of identical twins is a natural process that happens by chance. However, there are a couple of factors that influence your chances of having multiple pregnancies.
Age: If the age of the mother is 35 or above, the chances of having multiple pregnancies are reportedly high.
Heredity: Researchers have discovered that the probability of having fraternal twins has a genetic predisposition to it.
Previous History: A history of multiple pregnancies in the family increases the chances of it repeating.
Ethnicity: Historically, women belonging to certain ethnicities stand a higher chance of having multiple pregnancies.
Besides these natural causes, there are some other reasons for multiple births.
Medications for Ovulation: Doctors generally prescribe ovulation-stimulating medications to women who have irregular ovulation cycles. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Clomiphene citrate are generally prescribed by doctors to enhance egg production. These medications can sometimes result in the production of more than one egg, which when fertilized leads to the formation of dizygotic or fraternal twins.
In vitro Fertilization: In in-vitro fertilization, the process of zygote formation happens outside the body. To increase the chances of fertilization, multiple eggs are exposed to the sperms. This gives rise to a higher probability of more than one egg getting fertilized leading to twin or triplet pregnancy.
Signs and Symptoms
There are some early signs of multiple pregnancies that women can look for if they suspect that they are carrying twins.
Morning sickness: Although morning sickness is a very usual feature of the first trimester of a pregnancy, women carrying twins or more, tend to experience an increased level of nausea and vomiting. The tenderness of breast is also relatively high.
Weight gain: Women with multiple pregnancies, tend to gain a couple of more kilograms as compared to those carrying a single baby. However, this is not an early indication of having twins, as the weight gain becomes prominent only after the second trimester.
Bigger bump: The uterus expands to a larger size while accommodating two or more babies, making the baby bump visibly larger.
Increase in appetite: Due to the doubled nutritional needs of the growing foetus, a woman carrying twin babies generally tend to have a sudden increase in their appetite. It is a natural mechanism of the body to increase the nutrient uptake.
These symptoms are very subjective and can differ from one person to the other.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of multiple pregnancies is possible during the initial stages of pregnancy itself with the help of the necessary technologies. Some of the techniques that doctors use to check for multifoetal pregnancy are:
HCG Levels: The hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin is generally elevated in a pregnant woman. These levels are comparatively higher for those carrying more than one foetus. Therefore, the level of HCG hormone in the blood is a clear indicator of multiple pregnancies.
Ultrasound Scan: The regular ultrasound scan will give conclusive evidence on multiple pregnancies. A woman carrying more than one foetus can come to know of it as early as 20 weeks of her pregnancy, through a simple ultrasound scan.
Blood Test: During pregnancy, the foetus secretes a protein called Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) from its liver, which integrates into the bloodstream of the mother. A measurement of the level of AFP is usually done during the 15th and 17th week of pregnancy. A higher level of AFP is one of the early signs of the woman carrying more than one foetus.
Mode of Delivery
The position of the baby inside the womb, vertex or breech, majorly decides the mode of delivery. The baby is delivered either vaginally or through C-section, depending on factors like the position of the foetus, health of the mother and the babies, stage of pregnancy, etc.
Vaginal Delivery
Usually, a vaginal delivery is done only when there are no complications. In the case of twins, if both babies are in a head down (vertex) position, a normal vaginal delivery is possible. However, a normal vaginal delivery also is performed in an operation theatre for catering to any kind of emergency.
Operative Delivery
If the foetuses are delivered pre-term, they are usually delivered through C-section to avoid causing any risk to mother and the baby. In the case where one or both the babies are in breech position, a caesarean is preferred to minimise the risk of any complications. For mothers carrying three or more foetuses, a C-section is always the choice of delivery.
Multiple Pregnancy Risks
It is very important for couples who are expecting multiple babies, to have a clear picture of the various risks associated with it. The general complications that can arise in a multifetal pregnancy are,
Risks to mother
Miscarriage: Sometimes babies in a multiple pregnancy, do not survive long enough to complete the full term. A medical condition called ‘vanishing twin syndrome’ occurs when one of the two babies in a twin pregnancy fail to survive.
Pre-eclampsia: Pre-eclampsia is a condition that leads to hypertension and increased blood pressure in the mother. Chances of having preeclampsia are elevated in multifetal pregnancies and can lead to further complications that can even cause the detachment of the placenta.
Postpartum haemorrhage: Due to the sheer size of the placenta and the uterus in a multifetal pregnancy, the chances of the mother experiencing a haemorrhage inside the uterus are high.
Anaemia: In multifetal pregnancies the nutritional needs of the baby are increased twice or thrice more than a singleton pregnancy, thereby making the mother prone to anaemia.
C-section: The chances of having a C-section delivery are very high with a multiple pregnancy.
Risk to mother’s life: The maternal mortality rates with multiple pregnancies are comparatively higher than singleton pregnancies owing to a number of risk factors like anaemia, haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, etc.
Risks to foetus
Premature babies: Multiple birth babies are at a higher risk of being born prematurely owing to the space and nutritional constraints inside the uterus. Babies born before 28 weeks of pregnancy, have underdeveloped internal organs, leading to postnatal complications. These babies are usually given life support in the neonatal care units until considerable growth is achieved.
Congenital defects: Multiple birth babies have a two times higher chance of having birth defects such as neural tube defects, cardiac defects and gastrointestinal defects, compared to single birth babies.
Twin-Twin transfusion: This is a condition in which monozygotic identical twins who share the placenta do not get an equal share of blood and nutrients. In some rare cases, the blood vessels form in such a way that one of the foetuses gets more blood compared to the other. This condition can lead to growth defects in the undernourished baby.
Intrauterine growth restrictions or IUGR: These are very likely to occur with twins or more, due to the lack of space for the foetus to grow. In such cases, babies appear smaller and do not gain sufficient weight inside the womb.
Precautions to Be Taken in Case of Multiple Pregnancy
Once you have been diagnosed with multiple pregnancies, there are some precautions that you can take to avoid any associated complications.
Higher nutrient intake: As the nutritional demands of the growing foetuses are double, a conscious increase in the consumption of nutrients can go a long way in reducing the risk of undernourishment both for the babies and the mother.
Continuous monitoring: Women carrying more than one foetus are often advised to visit the doctor more frequently to carry out a continuous assessment of the health of the baby and the mother. Regular ultrasound scans are done to check for any kind of anomaly at every stage of the pregnancy.
Rest: Multiple pregnancies of a higher order like triplets or quadruplets warrant a lot of bed rest as these pregnancies are associated with a lot of complications. Depending on the risk factors, doctors even advice women with twin pregnancies to take adequate bed rest.
Stitching of the cervix: Many women who carry multiple babies have increased chances of cervical incompetence. In order to avoid the opening up of the cervix before the completion of the full term, doctors stitch the mouth of the cervix in a process termed as cervical cerclage.
Medications: Doctors often prescribe nutritional supplements in the form of medicines and other hormones like corticosteroids for ensuring a safe delivery.
Future Complications
Many times when multiple birth babies are born prematurely, they are observed and cared in incubators in the neonatal care units (NICUs). After the babies develop the ability to survive without assistance, they are removed from the incubator support. Some common complications with multiple babies are,
Breastfeeding of two or more babies at a time can be a very challenging task for the new mother. Lactation and feeding are very much possible with multiple babies and a lactation consultant can be very helpful in establishing a feeding routine.
Women who have delivered twins or triplets stand a higher chance of experiencing postpartum depression. Having supportive family and friends can go a long way in staying positive and happy.
Pre-mature babies may have some developmental complications in future. Regular postnatal checkups are required to ensure the well being of the babies, especially if they are born with some birth defects.
FAQs
Why is multiple birth a matter of concern?
Multiple births are usually associated with some risks and complications for both the mother and the babies. Special care and monitoring are required for mothers who are carrying more than one baby to keep a check on their health and well being.
Do I need to gain extra weight in case of multiple pregnancy?
As per the standard medical recommendation, the mother’s weight gain is an indicator of the baby’s growth. In case of multiple pregnancies, the weight gain of the mother is doubled or tripled to reflect the growth of the foetus inside.
Will multiple pregnancy affect foetal growth?
Yes. Multiple pregnancies affect the growth of the foetus due to lack of enough space for the growth of the babies. Lack of proper nutrition also can slow the growth process. Sometimes, placental defects or conditions like TTTS can affect the growth of one of the foetus.
Should I exercise if I am pregnant with multiples?
Exercising is very good during pregnancy and practising light exercises for at least 30 minutes in a day can be very helpful in staying active and fit. Only in conditions where the doctor has advised complete bed rest, exercising should be avoided.
A multiple pregnancy is a magical event for a couple and can be the source of unfettered joy and trepidation simultaneously. As with a single pregnancy, it is sure to progress smoothly is the expectant mother is well-cared for.

Baby Car Safety Guidelines
Inadequate car safety may lead to mild injury or serious consequences, including life risk for babies. However, following certain do’s and don’ts can make car travel safe for your children.
Car accidents are known to be one of the most common causes of death in children. However, most of these accidents can be prevented by following car safety guidelines such as using car restraints or not leaving your baby unattended in the car, irrespective of the travel distance. Here are some car safety tips for babies.
Car Safety Tips for Babies
The Dos about Baby Car Safety
1. Use a suitable car restraint
Using a good quality car seat or any other safety restraint is very important while travelling with babies. They should be according to the weight and size of the baby and also fit appropriately according to the model of the vehicle.
2. Position the baby correctly inside the car
Babies should always travel in the back seat and be buckled up properly before the vehicle starts moving. The position should allow them a good head control, especially when fall asleep.
3. Keep your baby within eyesight
Parents should place the car seat in such a way that babies are visible to them from the driver’s seat. This helps in keeping a check on their babies.
4. Take a pit stop during long journeys
It is advisable to take short breaks during long hauls and then resume your onward journey. This allows the baby to spend some free time out of the car seat and also gives parents some rest.
5. Keep the baby engaged
It is better to keep the baby engaged with toys, talk, songs or books so that she does not fidget and can be safeguarded from the risk of falling.
6. Keep the baby hydrated
Giving water and other fluids to babies from time to time during the journey can prevent them from dehydration and heat strokes, which may occur due to the overheating of the vehicle.
7. Dress the baby appropriately
Make your baby wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes, especially when travelling in a hot weather. Use appropriate sun protection cream or accessories, as may be required. Babies may overheat quickly in the car, so take proper care.
8. Display proper car etiquettes yourself
Children learn from what they see their parents doing. So, following good car etiquettes like fastening seat belts before moving, keeping arms inside the car while driving or looking straight while driving can sensitize your kids on safety in cars from an early age.
9. Praise your baby
Always praise your baby with sweet words, hugs and kisses for displaying a good behaviour in the car. This should be done to make them feel better and comfortable for the next journey.
10. Keep emergency numbers and medicines handy
Having emergency numbers of hospitals, road assistance or traffic control authority in your pocket diary or phone can be useful, especially during long travel, accidents or unforeseen circumstances. Also, carry the necessary medicines or prescription for your baby.
The Don’ts about Baby Car Safety
Do not keep any loose or sharp objects lying around in the car, as these can hurt the baby most in case of any accident.
You can use a car sign board for babies to indicate that there is a baby on board.
Do not hold the baby in arms or on your knees; use appropriate car safety equipments instead.
Do not leave the baby unsupervised in the car, even for a few minutes.
Do not allow siblings to play with or loosen the baby’s seat belts.
Do not allow the baby to go into a lying position in the car or unfasten the straps when she falls asleep.
Do not use hard-to-fit car seats, as you may feel reluctant to use it on shorter journeys.
Next time you travel with your baby in the car, keep the above checklist in mind to ensure their maximum safety in a car. Read more
