How to Increase Haemoglobin - 8 Best Ways
Haemoglobin is a type of protein found in the body that is responsible for the production of red blood cells and transports oxygen to other organs. Having low haemoglobin count can make it difficult for your lungs to expel the carbon dioxide as your cells collect this from various tissues in the body in order to expel it. In short, a low haemoglobin blood count not only leads to fatigue, anaemia, and other symptoms, it could also be fatal to your well-being.
What Is Meant by Low Haemoglobin Count?
The normal haemoglobin count in men is 14 grams per decilitre of blood while for women the normal range is 12 grams per decilitre of blood. Low haemoglobin blood counts lead to consequences like anaemia resulting from iron deficiency, pregnancy complications, liver issues, and urinary tract infections.
Diseases related to a low haemoglobin blood count include:
Cancer
Chronic Kidney Disease
Hypothyroidism
Hodgkin's Disease
Leukaemia
Nutritional Deficiencies
In general, if your haemoglobin blood count is not too low, you won't feel much of a difference, however, with lower levels, your quality of life will be impaired due to fatigue and other health complications arising from it. You could have low haemoglobin levels if you're going through menstruation since severe blood loss is known to lead to a low haemoglobin blood count.
Ways to Increase Haemoglobin Count
There are various ways you can increase your haemoglobin blood count. Here are 8 ways to increase haemoglobin in your body:
1. Eat Foods Rich in Iron
Maximise your iron intake by eating foods like shellfish, kale, spinach, and fruits and vegetables. We recommend iron-rich foods like raisins, dates, eggs, green beans, and leafy vegetables like spinach. Nuts and seeds like Brazil nuts, almonds, chia seeds, and cashews are other fantastic options in terms of foods to increase haemoglobin fast. For those who like meats, ground beef and chicken breasts are popular iron-rich food sources.
When adding meat to your diet, go for low-fat lean meats and opt for grass-fed varieties. For 3.5 ounces of chicken breast, you get up to 0.7 mg of iron while 85 grams of ground beef supplies up to 2.1 mg of iron. Seafood like clams, oyster and caviar are also known to help you meet your everyday RDA for iron and clams are known to be the best go-to source for it - supplying a whopping 28 mg of iron and 22.1 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams of it.
2. Increase Your Folate Intake
If you are wondering how to increase haemoglobin in blood despite increasing your iron intake - the answer is folate.
Folate or Vitamin B9 is required to make red blood cells in your body. By increasing your folate intake through your diet, your iron levels and haemoglobin production will go up. To increase your folate intake, eat foods like beetroot, avocados, peanuts, kidney beans, beef, and lettuce.
3. Using OTC Iron Supplements
If you've got a severe case of anaemia or other health issues due to a low haemoglobin blood count, you may find it helpful to supplement. There are various supplements available like multivitamins and exclusive OTC iron supplements. If you're planning to go for the over-the-counter ones, talk to your doctor regarding the required dosages based on your bloodwork. And remember, it literally takes months of supplementation for your body to yield results so don't expect a turnaround in a few days.
4. Improve Your Iron Absorption Rates
All the iron intake in the world won't make a difference if your body is not able to absorb it. This is where pairing Vitamin C-rich foods like lemon juice and strawberries and leafy green vegetables will help. Include Vitamin A and beta-carotene based foods in your diet, since these two nutrients aid in the absorption and use of iron in the body. Good sources of these include fish, liver, sweet potatoes, collard greens, mangoes, squash, and carrots. However, avoid consuming too much of these, as an overdose of this nutrient can lead to a condition called hypervitaminosis A which causes joint paint and headaches.
5. Drink Herbal Teas
Drinking herbal teas such as nettle tea can help in increasing haemoglobin levels in your blood. Just stir in two teaspoons of dried nettle levels and let it sit for 10 minutes. If you want some flavour, add a pinch of honey or dry date powder for taste. Drink it and make sure to have this two to three times a day for best results. You can also try dandelion tea. Buy the edible parts, powder them, and make herbal concoctions out of them. If you want, you could take these in the form of supplements form but ask your GP about it before doing that.
6. Exercise
Improving your blood circulation is a surefire way to increase your haemoglobin production since your body creates more RBCs to meet the demand for increased oxygenation to various parts. If you're looking for recommendations, HIIT and Cardio are your best bets. Opt for whole body workouts if you don't know where to start and if you are facing health implications. Do low-Impact workouts or hire a professional trainer or physical therapist to help you out.
There are tons of options where workouts are concerned but the key takeaway is to start at a place and pace that works for you. With time, you can increase the intensity or difficulty levels but start easy, especially if you've been sedentary for a while.
7. Increase Your Vitamin C Intake
Vitamin C influences haemoglobin production in your body so if you up its intake, you'll notice pleasant results. Eat fruits like apples, pomegranates, and citrus fruits like oranges and lemons that are rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C basically boosts your haemoglobin absorption. And if you like to eat pomegranates, you'll like its juice too. Drink a glass of fresh homemade pomegranate juice. Avoid processed foods and drinks since those are loaded with added sugar and are low in nutrients. Eat as natural as you possibly can to boost your absorption.
8. Befriend Lentils/Legumes
Lentils and legumes are not only excellent plant-based sources of protein, but they boost your iron intake and up your haemoglobin levels with time. Good sources are mung beans, fava beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, and adzuki beans. Try pairing these with brown/black rice and you'll have meals which are not only filling but ones that help you meet your daily nutritional requirements.
Some of these foods are also rich in zinc and selenium; these trace minerals can influence the haemoglobin production in your body.
FAQs
Here are a few common questions with regards to your haemoglobin levels. Keep in mind that there's no "one-size-fits-all" approach when it comes to boosting your haemoglobin count which is why it is important to consult your doctor before eating anything. Now, without further ado here we answer your queries:
1. How Much Iron Do You Need Daily?
Your iron intake depends on your age, gender, weight, and overall well-being. Roughly, adults require a minimum of 8 mg iron a day while women between the ages of 18 and 50 need up to 19 mg per day.
2. What Causes Low Haemoglobin Levels?
Low haemoglobin levels are caused by various factors. The most common reasons are a sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, and consuming substances which are iron blockers like caffeine, specific drugs, and medications. Having any medical diseases or health complications like hypothyroidism, diabetes, and anaemia could also influence and lead to low haemoglobin levels in the body.
3. What Happens If Your Haemoglobin Is Low?
If your haemoglobin level is too low you'll experience symptoms like fatigue, weakness in the muscles, unexplained bruising, and recurring headaches. You'll notice a rapid but irregular heartbeat and have pale skin. Ignoring these symptoms and worsening your condition could lead to complications like anaemia and in extreme cases, even death if left ignored. If your condition is serious, you may even require a blood transfusion or immediate medical treatment.
In a nutshell, if your haemoglobin levels are too low, your organs won't get sufficient oxygen. This could lead to organ failure, impaired lung function, and cause other serious side effects and health complications. Hypercapnia is another condition which may arise from too much Carbon dioxide build up in your body.
We've talked about how to boost your haemoglobin production but you must also understand that poor lifestyle habits and nutrition are the root causes behind it. As long as you work on that, you won't have to worry about low haemoglobin levels.

10 Fun Ways to Get Toddlers to Brush their Teeth
Teaching good oral hygiene to your child is very important and this must start from a young age. But to get your little one to brush her teeth properly in the morning or before bedtime can be quite a hassle. Either they may get distracted very quickly or they may develop an aversion to the habit itself. But you can make brushing teeth a fun activity for your kids. Let’s see how below.
Why Toddlers Hate to Brush Their Teeth
Kids not brushing teeth is the number one problem that most parents face during child rearing. Toddlers, in particular, might resist brushing their teeth as it might seem like a boring and tiring activity. Even if you explain the concept of good dental care and the importance of preventing cavities to them, they still might not understand and further think it is a tiresome activity. Also, when your child becomes a toddler, he or she might try to stop doing things they were previously fine with. Like cleaning up toys, getting dressed or brushing their teeth. They do this to test boundaries and check what is permissible and what they can get away with. The solution is to make brushing teeth a fun activity for them, along with explaining why it is important for their dental health and well being.
How to Make Brushing Teeth Fun for a Toddler
There are several ways you can turn the activity of brushing teeth into a game for children, one in which they can participate and enjoy. Below are a few creative ways on how to get kids to brush teeth
1. Set a Reward
A fun way is to buy or make a calendar for that particular year. Buy a sticker set which your child will love. Tell him that if he brushes his teeth properly every night and every morning for 2 minutes, he gets rewarded with a special sticker placed on the calendar for that day. Keep every day’s sticker a surprise for him. Eventually, when he fills up the calendar with stickers, give him a bigger reward like a toy or a special outing.
2. Be a Good Example
Brush your teeth along with your child. Show them what a good job mommy is doing brushing her teeth. Make sure that they see how well you brush your back teeth, clean your tongue and brush your gums. Make each step exaggerated and showy. In the end, smile at the mirror and show your child how white your teeth are. This can help them learn by example.
3. Let Them Practice on You
Although this is slightly tiresome, it is a good way to get your child interested in brushing his teeth. Open your mouth and ask your child to practice brushing your teeth using a toothbrush. Give fun reactions and praise your child for his good work. Make sure to seem like it is an exciting activity so that your kid will also want to join in. You can also ask him to practice on his toys or stuffed animals with a make-believe toothbrush.
4. Add Some Music
Play some fun music during the 2-minute brushing teeth ritual. Dance along with your kids to the music (maintaining proper brushing of course) and tell him that when the music stops, that means he’s also done with brushing his teeth! There are many apps you can download which plays music for this exact purpose.
5. Change Your Toothpaste Often
There are many interesting flavoured tubes of toothpaste available in the market for children. They will start to brush solely to taste the flavour that they like. Children will also love to see their favourite characters on the packaging and will get encouraged to brush their own teeth this way. For kids less than 3 years of age, you can buy a fluoride-free toothpaste so that they don’t get harmed even if they swallow a bit of the toothpaste by mistake.
6. Turn it Into a Game
You need to make sure your child brushes his teeth for two whole minutes for proper dental care, so make it a race. Race your children against each other or against you while using a timer to see who brushes continuously the longest. You can also make a story about sugar villains attacking your child’s mouth, and the only way to keep his mouth safe is with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You can even tie a scarf around your child like a cape so that he can be a superhero fighting away the sugar villains. Your child will get excited and try to be a superhero every day. But don’t exaggerate on how his mouth is filled with villains, he might become traumatized. Just a little bit of light-hearted storytelling will do.
7. Make Them Independent
Kids love to do ‘grown-up’ things like dressing by themselves or eating without any help or drinking from their own cup. Tell them that brushing teeth is another grown-up activity which you trust them to do on their own – finding the toothpaste, opening the tube and squeezing it out on their toothbrush. This can help hone their confidence, independence, and motor skills. It will also make them proud to be recognized as an equal by an adult and will make them continue to do it so that they can be ‘grown up’ too.
8. Take Them Shopping
Make brushing teeth an important activity in their heads by taking them on a special shopping trip to pick out their own toothpaste and toothbrush. This extra level of dedication will make your child think that brushing one’s teeth is a revered ritual and he should do it to the T.
9. Let Your Dentist Help
If your child does not listen to you when you talk about oral care, maybe he will listen to another adult. Children often want to impress other adults they meet. Especially if the adult is an important looking doctor. If your child looks up to your dentist, take him there and let the dentist talk about why brushing one's teeth is very important. You can also let your child bring his toothbrush along so that the dentist can demonstrate. This will leave a lasting impression on your child’s mind and encourage him to mimic the dentist too.
10. Make it Family Time
Let your whole family brush their teeth together. Make it a special family time in the mornings and in the evenings. Children will look forward to this activity and will get encouraged to brush their own teeth. You can do this till the child learns the importance of brushing every day. After all, a family that brushes together, stay together!
It might be frustrating for you if your child is slow to make brushing a regular habit but don’t lose patience or hope. A child can always be inculcated with good brushing habits. Make sure never to create fear using threats that you will take him to a dentist if he doesn’t brush properly. Instead, use the above ways and don’t forget to praise your child for all the good work!

Picking Toys and Books for School Kids
All kids are not the same and their individual personalities begin to show up when they start going to school. While choosing toys and books for a school-age kid, parents should know his likes and dislikes; and choose accordingly.
When children start going to school, they start learning numbers, letters and language skills. A lot of toys, games and books, ranging from simple puzzles to high-tech electronic gadgets, encourage this type of learning. If children enjoy practicing the things that they learn at school, it increases their capacity to retain whatever they learn.
This is why it is important to pick the right toy or book for a school going child. However, finding appropriate toys and books for your school going kid requires an understanding of the play ideas that will suit his age so that he is able to enjoy and learn from them. What is more important is that the parents take out time to indulge in the play activity with their school going kids. They can bond over an interesting game or story in a book. During this engagement, the child learns and parents understand about his likes or dislikes.
Types of Toys and Books for Your Kid
1. Science Toys and Books
Toys that help in bringing out the little scientist in your kid include: magnifying glasses, kaleidoscope, periscope, telescope, microscope, a garden kit, anatomy kit or a magnet kit. Children love to play with these toys, reinforcing the knowledge they learn from school.
2. Video Games and Computer
Computers have several educational games that teach maths, reading and language skills to your child. There are also role-playing games that count strength levels, points or money, helping in developing maths skills. Strategy games improve your child’s ability to think and solve a problem, and the ability to work towards a goal. Other racing and action games help in improving hand-eye coordination.
3. Board Games and Strategy Toys
School going children are able to understand things better, and hence, enjoy playing games with rules with their friends and family. This helps in improving their social skills. There are many board games that require a lot of logical thinking and strategizing. These games improve your child’s maths skills, memory, spelling and also reading skills.
Some good board games might include:
Scrabble
Chess
Pictionary
Monopoly
Scrabble
Othello
Checkers and Chinese checkers
Dominoes
Snakes and ladders
Pick-up sticks
Bingo
4. Brain Teasers and Puzzle Games
Playing games like puzzles and brain teasers help in improving a child’s hand-eye coordination, visual perception, problem solving skills and patience.
5. Creative Toys and Art Books
These help to enhance your child’s creativity and bring out their talent. They refine your child’s ability to communicate their feelings and ideas visually.
6. Sports
Children require physical activity for better health. Sports also develop intelligence in your kids. Most popular ones include tennis, basketball, bikes, baseball, etc.
7. Musical Instrument
School age children should be encouraged to learn to play musical instruments according to their interests like a keyboard, guitar, drums or a karaoke. This way they can discover their musical talents.
School going children require complex games and toys that stimulate their intelligence and enhance the skills they learn at school. So the next time you are out shopping for your little one, make sure the toys or games are not just fun but educational too. Read more

A. usually fixed. better to show to specialist always as they get the correct diagnosis. try to avoid self and extra medication that will only complicate this and create more damage to the child

A. You should have started going from the very beginning itself once you get to know you’re pregnant but since you haven’t reached that now if you’re pregnancy has been healthy last five months please get it checked with your doctor also if you need to start with any supplements or diet the doctor would advise you after a ultrasound so please visit your gynaecologist
