PMS or Pregnancy: Symptoms & Differences
As you step into the week before you start your period, you might experience various physical and emotional symptoms. However, some of these symptoms are similar to the symptoms of pregnancy. Let us look at some information that you can bank upon to clarify your concerns about pregnancy symptoms and premenstrual symptoms.
What Is PMS?
Premenstrual syndrome, also known as PMS, refers to various physical and emotional symptoms that women experience one or two weeks before their menstrual period. These symptoms vary from person to person and disappear when the period begins.
PMS Versus Pregnancy Symptoms
Some symptoms of PMS are similar to those of pregnancy. The intensity of PMS varies from woman to woman, and similarly, the symptoms of pregnancy are also person-specific. As is the case with both PMS and pregnancy symptoms, some women may be affected badly, some may experience only mild discomfort, while some may be less impacted overall. Symptoms such as nausea, frequent urination, fatigue, mood swings and headaches are part and parcel of both PMS and pregnancy, which is where the confusion lies - the difference between the two can be quite challenging.
Let us look at symptoms related to PMS and pregnancy and analyse ones that are common to both. Let us also understand how to differentiate if these symptoms indicate PMS or early signs of pregnancy.
Common Symptoms of PMS
Some women experience emotional stress during PMS, while others experience aches and other physical discomforts. Let us look at some common symptoms of PMS:
1. Tender and Swollen Breasts
Some women feel that their breasts become tender or even swell up during PMS. Breast sensitivity or tenderness can vary from woman to woman and can range from mild to severe. The tenderness increases before the period starts and decreases as the period progresses. In most cases, the tenderness disappears after the bleeding stops. In some cases, the tissues of the breasts may feel different and women might experience heaviness coupled with pain and tenderness.
2. Muscle Cramps, Back Pain and Spotting
Many women experience cramps before their periods, which often continue through the periods. Cramps (dysmenorrhea) are intense and last for more than a day. These cramps decrease during the days of the flow, and gradually disappear till the flow stops.
Some women also experience spotting alongside cramps before their period begins. Pain in the lower back is another common symptom that women experience before and during their period.
3. Aversion to Food or Food Cravings
Some women crave for specific food items like chocolates, sweets or savoury items, while other women feel nauseated looking at food and don't feel hungry.
4. Mood Swings
Mood swings are a common PMS symptom. Many women experience a rollercoaster of emotions before they start their period. They tend to cry, feel low, overwhelmed, extremely happy, and generally sensitive.
5. Fatigue
Some women feel extremely exhausted before their periods, even when they have not indulged in any strenuous activity.
6. Pimples or Acne
The effect of hormone fluctuations before periods can have an impact on the skin as well. A majority of women experience acne and pimples, and this is known as premenstrual acne. Premenstrual acne disappears easily, but in some cases, a doctor may prescribe hormonal contraceptives to reduce the occurrence of premenstrual breakouts.
7. Weight Gain and Bloating
The body tends to retain water just before the period begins. This is why some women experience bloating before their period, and they notice minor changes such as clothes feeling tight around the body and the feeling of the stomach bulging out as if they have just had a large meal. Many women also gain weight before their period begins. These symptoms vanish as soon as bleeding begins.
Let us now look at some symptoms of pregnancy.
Common Symptoms of Pregnancy
It is important to note that not all women experience the same symptoms. However, most women will experience at least some of these symptoms, and knowledge of these symptoms will help you figure out if you are pregnant. A better way to confirm pregnancy is by performing relevant pregnancy tests.
1. Breast Sensitivity
Breasts are sensitive, and you may experience tenderness, heaviness or soreness if you are pregnant. Breast sensitivity is one of the first and most common signs of pregnancy. Changes in your breasts can be experienced about two weeks after conception.
2. Sleepiness
You may experience fatigue and exhaustion because of the metabolic changes occurring in your body to support a new life.
3. Nausea and Dizziness
Another common symptom of pregnancy is feeling nauseous, especially in the morning. This is called morning sickness, and it is caused due to the rising levels of progesterone. It is usually accompanied by dizziness.
4. Increase in Basal Body Temperature
If you are pregnant, your basal body temperature will increase. The temperature may rise between 0.5 and 1.5 degrees and will remain high.
5. Mood Fluctuations
Feelings of depression, crying spells and feeling extremely overwhelmed are some symptoms related to moods and pregnancy. The hormonal changes in the body are responsible for these mood swings and sensitivity.
6. Food Cravings and Aversions
Food cravings are common if you are pregnant. Your food cravings may be completely wild or totally normal - you may crave foods like pickles or other savoury items, or food that you have never liked or enjoyed before. These cravings may come and go, or stay during the entire duration of pregnancy. Some women may also have severe aversions to certain foods - even foods they once loved.
7. Darkening of Areola
The oestrogen levels in the body increase during pregnancy, and this increase leads to the expansion of the size of the areola or the nipple. The areola may also darken during this time.
8. Cramps
If you are pregnant, you might experience mild cramps in the lower abdomen area or lower back.
9. Skin Darkening
Some women experience a sudden change in their skin colour. This phenomenon is referred to as melasma, and it most commonly occurs on the chin, the upper lip, the forehead, and cheeks.
10. Frequent Urination
The need to relieve yourself frequently can indicate that you might be pregnant. During pregnancy, the uterus grows and pushes the bladder, leading to frequent urination.
11. Headaches
Sudden headaches might occur due to hormonal changes, which are common during pregnancy.
Symptoms Common to Both PMS and Pregnancy
Now that you have seen some of the symptoms of PMS and pregnancy separately, here are the symptoms of PMS vs pregnancy to help you identify what are you experiencing. Some symptoms that are common to both include:
Food cravings
Breast sensitivity
Mood swings
Exhaustion or fatigue
Cramps
Difference Between Periods and Pregnancy Symptoms
If you have a delayed period, you might wonder if your symptoms are pregnancy-related. A comparison of the signs of periods vs pregnancy would give you a fair idea. Following are the signs that can help you decide whether it is PMS or pregnancy:
1. Breast Pain
Is breast pain a sign of pregnancy or periods? Well, here's the difference:
PMS
Pregnancy
The breasts are usually swollen and tender and are accompanied by some pain. The tenderness, swelling and pain subside when the period starts.
In addition to being sensitive, the breasts get sore; this occurs two weeks post-conception. The pain may last longer.
2. Food Cravings and Food Aversions
Some women crave specific food items during PMS or pregnancy.
PMS
Pregnancy
You might crave sweet or savoury food items. However, you can resist your temptations most times.
Your craving can range from pickles to any other item that is not a part of your usual diet. These cravings cannot be controlled; you will feel satisfied only after eating the food.
3. Feeling Bloated
PMS
Pregnancy
Bloating is natural due to fluid retention, which can give a feeling of fullness. Your weight might increase and then decrease when your period starts.
You may bloat more during pregnancy, especially after eating a meal because of the steadily fluctuating hormones.
4. Cramps
PMS
Pregnancy
During PMS, cramps can be intense, accompanied by back pain.
The cramps can be mild and occur in the lower stomach and the lower back region.
5. Acne or Pimples
PMS
Pregnancy
Acne or pimples appear before the period, and some women take it as an indication that their period is around the corner. However, in many cases, they disappear after the period or when the period starts.
Acne that appears during pregnancy persists for a longer time and can be one of the distinguishing signs between periods and pregnancy. In some cases, skin darkening can also be observed during pregnancy.
6. Mood Swings
PMS
Pregnancy
Mood swings are very common during PMS and they subside when you get your period.
Mood swings last for a longer period and might recur in some women.
7. Fatigue
PMS
Pregnancy
If you feel tired and your periods are around the corner, it could be PMS.
If you feel extremely tired and want to sleep the entire day, it could be a sign of pregnancy.
8. Headaches
PMS
Pregnancy
Headaches occur due to hormonal changes and subside as the period begins.
Changes in the hormonal levels can cause sudden headaches that last for longer periods and can be extremely painful.
9. Feeling Gassy
PMS
Pregnancy
Hormonal surges slow down the gastrointestinal tracts, which can make women gassy. However, they can often control it from letting out.
As you do not have control over your muscles, it becomes difficult to control the gas and you may let it out.
10. Spotting
PMS
Pregnancy
Spotting is rare during PMS and might occur in some cases along with cramps.
Women experience spotting with mild abdominal pain during the first few days after conception.

Your 28 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Your baby is now a bundle of energy that is always moving. By this age, your child's brain development has occurred in a significant manner. It will be a great idea to follow up on the developmental milestones that the child is supposed to be passing, but worry not if these have not occurred. Milestones are not rules but simply guidelines to give you a better idea of the baby's progress.
A 28 Week-Old Baby's Development
A 28 week-old baby's weight is much more than what it was when he was born, because of the muscles strengthening greatly in the child. Your child will already have learnt to crawl by now, so make sure to keep any choking hazards away from the floor. Rolling around is also common, and your child might be choosing to roll around everywhere, too.
This chosen method of movement varies greatly in children, so it should not be focused upon too much. Some babies might still be struggling to crawl, but some others might already be starting to pull themselves up to stand. In terms of brain development, the child is also improving well. The brain controls the practising of muscles, and powers towards learning to stand up and walk.
By this time, your child will also be hungrier than ever. Appetite increases are common, as the child need energy more than ever in order to power his rapid movements and brain development. Learning new skills also require a lot of energy at this time, and there will be very less resting periods for the body of the baby. In any way, this period involves rapid development on all fronts.

A Twenty-Eight Week-Old Baby's Milestones
While the child is bound to have passed a few milestones by this time, it is perfectly okay for children to be slow in progress. These milestones are not rules, but rather guidelines which help parents get an idea of how the growth is progressing.
Crawling will be the norm now, with your child moving rapidly to wherever he pleases. If he is already pulling himself up using furniture and other supports, your child is ahead of the curve already.
Cruising is also something that your baby will be doing, and it involves him standing up using supports to strengthen the muscles of his feet and calves to support walking.
It is common for your baby to walk around in this manner a lot, particularly if you have some furniture arranged in a close manner.

Feeding
By this age, you will most likely have introduced solid food to your child apart from breast milk. However, some babies might still not be too inclined towards solid food. It is important to remember that the regular inclusion of solid food in the diet of the child will most likely occur only by the age of one, so you must not force solid food onto the child in any manner. You can encourage her subtly by making solid food available to him by including him during the family dinners, but remember to remove whatever is left with her by the end of the meal. If you try to force him to move onto solid food, this might create negative associations and result in the baby not accepting solid food at all. By twelve months of age, the child will likely have moved onto solid foods which the family consumes. A couple of baby teeth may also have sprouted in his mouth by this time.
A common problem with children at this age is tongue tie. This means that the tongue of the child is unable to move as required, which makes him unable to move the food from the front of the mouth to the middle and back in order to swallow it. Chewing also becomes a problem, with the child being unable to move the food sideways as necessary for the teeth to chew it properly. Some symptoms of this problem occurring include gagging, choking, coughing or vomiting while solid food is given to the child. If you suspect this is the case, it is best to pay a paediatric dentist a visit. He will assess whether the functioning of the tongue and check whether it was an issue back during the breastfeeding days.

Sleeping
For the 28-week old baby, sleep will be disruptive. You will find the child waking up during odd hours of the night, and crying out for your attention. This occurs as a result of muscle practising, which is the phenomenon where the muscles of the child strengthen during the time he sleeps.
Co-sleeping is most preferred by parents at this time so that they can cater to the needs of the child in a better manner. Co-sleeping involves the child sleeping with the parents, in the same bed. You need to ensure that the guidelines for safe bed-sharing with your infant are met so that there is no difficulty for the parents as well as the baby. By this time, your baby will be able to latch and detach by himself during breastfeeding. Therefore, mothers can sleep or take a nap while they breastfeed the child, making sleeping that much easier.

A 28 Week-Old Baby's Care Tips
Teething toys will be comforting to the child, as the eruption of teeth will be occurring in his mouth at this time. You can give your baby cold or chilled items occasionally so that the discomfort of teething is numbed when they bite into the item.
Bed sharing is easier to manage, but ensure that your child gets a safe sleeping space during the night.
If the baby is showing difficulty in consuming even pureed or mashed food items, checking the possibility of tongue tie is necessary.
Do not force solid food unto him, as it can create bad associations in the long run.
Tests and Vaccinations
During the period of four to seven months of age, the child will be given a host of vaccinations. The third shot of a number of vaccines is given at this time, including DTaP, polio vaccine, Hep B, Hib, PCV and rotavirus vaccines. These ensure that the child does not contract diseases like diphtheria, polio, tetanus, hepatitis B, flu and some other ones as well. If the doctor thinks that your child is at risk of being infected by meningitis, meningococcal vaccines will also be prescribed for your child.
Games and Activities
The muscles of the baby’s legs and feet will have strengthened adequately enough to support his weight by now, so you might find your baby jumping around or walking with support at this time. If she is bouncing on your lap, it is fine to support him with your hands under his arms so that his legs develop quicker.
As grabbing and throwing is the norm now, you will best help him develop if you allow him to throw his toys as much as he likes. Also, you should avoid retrieving the thrown toys as much as possible- this means that the child has to move for it himself, thus helping the muscles of his legs get a great workout. Floor play must be given a lot of preference, as it helps the child stand up and walk that much sooner.
Your child will also be a keen listener by this age. He might also start contributing babble to the conversations around him, setting the tone for the second year when most of the speech development takes place. He will most likely have understood the ‘speak and pause’ process of conversation, which means that he will enjoy it a lot when his parents speak to him. In order to stimulate his brain further, you can repeat the sounds he makes back to him and then waiting for him so that he speaks during his turn.

When to Consult a Doctor
After vaccinations, it is common for your child to have fever or rashes at the site of vaccination. However, if these symptoms persist for some time, it is best to give the doctor a visit. If you notice something off with your child with your motherly instincts, it is better to take him to the doctor anyway- better safe than sorry, always.
Seven months might have passed in a jiffy but in terms of development, your baby has gone through a lot. He is already sitting and even standing up, and moving onto solid food. Enjoy this time with your child to the fullest.

Swaddling a Baby - When & How to Do It Right Way
Swaddling is recognized as a highly beneficial action for the baby. However, there are times when it might turn out to be harmful if not done using the proper technique. Generally, baby swaddle is implemented for babies below one month of age. For babies above that age, swaddling might cause constraint on the movements and the growth of the infant.
Video: How to Swaddle a Baby Step by Step Guide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZVuwl8NlK8
What is Swaddling?
Swaddling is a technique of pacifying the babies by wrapping them in a blanket to ensure that the baby is cosy and comfortable. It also pacifies the baby by offering them warmth. A baby can be swaddled in two ways. One method is tighter in order to be more protective while the other is done in a loosened fashion leaving the arms free. While swaddling can still be done after the baby is one month old, it can be done as the infant sleeps to minimize any impact on their mobility.
Why Swaddle Your Baby?
Swaddling is done to improve the sleep of the baby by soothing the baby.
Initially, it might be difficult, and the baby might even get frustrated. But eventually, this process enhances calm, peaceful and better sleep.
It improves the neuro-muscular development of the baby.
It helps in reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and its effects by keeping the babies on their back during sleep.
It helps infants to get uninterrupted sleep for a prolonged period.
It helps recreate the womb space and comforts the baby with a familiar surrounding during its first month.
When to Swaddle Your Newborn?
When to swaddle is a personal choice of the parents. Some do it any time of the day whenever the baby gets fussy. Others follow this only during the night, habituating the baby to sleep quickly when it is wrapped.
How to Swaddle a Baby?
There are many techniques followed while swaddling but the most common procedure is explained below -
To swaddle, place the blanket out horizontally, with one edge folded down.
Place the baby facing-upwards on the blanket, with its head above the folded edge.
Align its left arm, and wrap the left side of the blanket over its body and tuck it in-between right shoulder and the right side of the body.
Then put the right arm down and wrap the right side of the blanket over its body under the left-hand side.
Fold or twist the blanket's bottom loosely by pleating it under one side of the baby. Make sure that the baby's hips can move and that the blanket is not too tight.
This is the most common way to swaddle where we put the baby on its back and gently drape the blanket like a diamond. This is done by tucking the edges diagonally making sure both the legs are free and out of the blanket. Other swaddling techniques include square swaddle and sleep sack swaddle. The square swaddle is a technique wherein a baby is placed on a blanket that resembles a square before beginning the process. The sleep sack swaddle is a product that has an adjustable swaddle wrap which is designed to prevent the startle reflex in babies. Choosing a technique is all about the comfort level of your baby. These swaddling techniques are suitable for newborn babies who are not used to sleeping well and require to be held all the time.
Note that baby swaddle is a double-edged sword as it has equal benefits and drawbacks depending on the kind of technique followed to swaddle a baby.
The process of swaddling may cause an interference in the bonding and attachment between babies and parents. There are also a few common physical problems that are noticed. The major physical challenges your baby might experience due to incorrect swaddling are:
1. Overheating
Overheating is one risk that can occur if the baby is not swaddled properly. The baby may not be able to move freely inside, and this can cause a rise in body temperature
2. Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a medical condition where the growth and development of the hips are hindered due to being locked up in an immovable state. Whenever the babies move their legs, the femur bone movement inside the socket supports the happening of changes to the joints. Otherwise, the socket will develop into a plate-like structure leading to shallow sockets that cause problems with hip movement. This might affect the functioning of the joints in the long run
3. Respiratory Tract Problems
When a baby is tightly swaddled, it restricts their ability to breathe which could lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The correct way to swaddle a baby should be followed or else the likelihood of upper respiratory tract infections increases
When to Stop or Avoid Swaddling a Baby?
When to stop swaddling is one of the major concerns that all mothers have. Swaddling is a technique which may limit the movement of limbs. Limb movement is essential for the development of muscular and central nervous system. As per the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), you should consider stopping swaddling when your baby looks like he is trying to roll over. Many babies learn to do this between 4-6 months.
Can You Swaddle a Newborn at Night?
Yes. Swaddling can be done at night, but the right procedures must be followed to ensure the baby gets good sleep. If you do follow the right techniques and precautions, then you can swaddle for 4-5 months. should be
Precautions to Take While Swaddling
There are a few precautions that can be followed if you want to swaddle your baby. These include:
It is not recommended to allow a swaddled baby to sleep on its stomach position as it might increase the risk of SIDS. They are swaddled and kept with their back lying on the surface to avoid suffocation and breathlessness.
The health of the baby in combination with his/her respiratory rate plays a crucial role in deciding the extent to which one can swaddle them. Ensure that the baby is taken for regular check-ups before going ahead with the swaddling.
The material used for swaddling can be used as an aid in the minimizing the related after-effects of swaddling. Generally, lighter and soft blankets are used for wrapping babies to avoid any physical discomfort.
It is not advised to swaddle babies very tightly. Sometimes, parents do this to avoid baby freeing up himself/herself easily and getting hurt. Holding on to the baby tightly, on the other hand, would obstruct breathing and cause dislocation along with dysplasia.
A movement monitor can assist in monitoring the movements of the baby when swaddled for longer durations and help the parents look out for warning signs. If these little precautions are followed, parents don’t need to worry about how long to swaddle baby.
Swaddling helps parents to put their infant children to sleep. During their first month in the outside world, infants need all the rest they can get. Though there are some inherent dangers, using the right techniques on swaddling will ensure that the baby will be safe and sound. Read more

7 Simple Steps To Teach Your Child To Catch
Playing catch is a strong indicator of your child's hand-eye coordination and helps in motor skills development. If your toddler needs to hone his catching skills, read on to find how to go about it.
Even though your preschooler is able to roll and throw a ball at an early age, he might find it difficult to catch a ball or any other object coming in his direction successfully. Catching is a developmental activity which needs a good amount of practice. Help your child get there by helping him understand the basics of catching. We've listed some simple, helpful steps help you teach you out.
1. Receive and Push a Ball Across The Ground
Teach your kid to receive a ball that is rolled towards him across the floor and push it back to you. This simple step inculcates the concepts of reciprocal game, cause and effect (push the ball so that it rolls back), and taking turns.
2. Learn Catching a Ball Using Both Your Hands
Try an underhand toss technique and throw a big soft ball towards your kid’s chest. Initially, guide your kid to catch this big ball by using his entire hands from arms till palms and cradle the ball to his chest, as if your kid is hugging the big playground-sized ball. Once his accuracy to catch the big ball improves, teach him to catch the ball only by using the palms and fingers of his hands.
3. Catch a Tossed Ball Just With One Hand
Instruct your kid to put his one hand in his pocket or hold it behind his back. Now, you stand across and toss a ball towards your kid’s chest and encourage him to catch it by using his free hand only.
4. Drop and Catch a Bouncing Ball Using Both Hands
Move to the next level of learning the catching skill. Guide your child to drop a tennis ball and, as the ball bounces back up towards him, tell your kid to catch it using both the hands. Here the technique your kid should learn while catching the bouncing ball is to catch the ball at the waist height, which is lower than the chest level and is bit more difficult and hones your kid’s catching skills.
5. Drop and Catch a Bouncing Ball Using Just One Hand
Once your kid masters dropping and catching a bouncing ball with his two hands, encourage him to try the same and catch the ball with just one hand.
6. Bounce and Catch a Ball Game Involving a Partner
Stand in front of your child at about distance of 10 feet and play catching the bouncing ball with your kid. Bounce the ball towards your child, let him catch, and then ask him to bounce it back to you. Begin by throwing the ball such that it bounces to the mid-line of your kid’s body. Once your child is able to catch ball bouncing across the mid-line of his body, you start bouncing the ball to his sides.
7. Play Over/Under Catching Game
Playing over/under catching game is a challenging activity. You need two balls and two players. When you are playing this catching game with your kid, designate you as ‘over’ and your child as ‘under’. You need to throw the ball that is given to you over i.e. in the air towards your child and your child should catch it. Your child needs to throw the ball that is given to him under i.e. bounce the ball on the ground towards you and you should catch the bouncing ball. Play this without letting both the balls slip on the floor. Later, you can exchange your positions with you as ‘under’ and your kid as ‘over’ and play again. Read more

A. Do consult your doctor as soon as you can. It's important to find the real reason because without that, proper medication is not possible.

A. usually fixed. better to show to specialist always as they get the correct diagnosis. try to avoid self and extra medication that will only complicate this and create more damage to the child

A. You should have started going from the very beginning itself once you get to know you’re pregnant but since you haven’t reached that now if you’re pregnancy has been healthy last five months please get it checked with your doctor also if you need to start with any supplements or diet the doctor would advise you after a ultrasound so please visit your gynaecologist
