20 Effective Home Remedies for Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a contagious viral disease that affects children under the age of ten. It is caused by the coxsackievirus. The virus spreads through contact with unwashed hands, surfaces contaminated with faeces, an infected person’s stool or respiratory fluids. The symptoms of this disease include fever, sore throat, tiredness, painful ulcers, sores on the inside of the mouth and tongue, and blisters or rashes on the hands, feet, buttocks, elbows, and on the back of the knees. This disease is self-limiting and goes away on its own within a week to ten days. It cannot be prevented by a vaccine or cured with medication. However, there are some home remedies that can help your child tackle the symptoms of this disease. Once your child heals, the chances of him contracting this disease will be rare, as his body will have developed immunity against this virus.

How to Prevent Catching Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
Practising good hygiene goes a long way in keeping diseases at baby, and it’s the strongest defence your child can have against this disease too. Make sure your child washes his hands regularly and thoroughly with an antibacterial soap, especially after he comes into contact with surfaces that can have germs on them. Your child should wash his hands before and after every meal, after playing outside, and mainly after using the washroom. It’s also equally important to keep your surroundings clean. Disinfect any area that your child regularly uses, especially if it’s a shared space. Similarly, make sure things like toys or pacifiers (things that your child can put into his mouth) are definitely cleaned and disinfected.
The symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease can make children very uncomfortable and irritable. The rashes and blisters can be very painful for the little ones. So, try these home remedies to soothe the symptoms and make your child as comfortable as possible.

24 Months (2 Years Old) Baby Growth and Development
So, you finally have two candles on your baby’s birthday cake! You may also be wondering about the infamous phase of- terrible two’s. There is no doubt that you are likely to face some challenging moments now as your baby of 2 years old turns even more independent and assertive. With his range of skills increasing and his imagination taking flight, he is becoming his own unique and distinct little individual.
Your baby of 24 months old may not always behave the way you expect him to. There may be outbursts of frustration when he can’t have his way. But as parents, it may do you good if you maintain a relaxed attitude.
There may be no dull moment with your 2-year-old baby around; his continuous chatter as he tries to thread three or four words together to compose a sentence will keep you amused. You can even have meaningful conversations with your baby now.
2 Years Baby Development
A baby can chart significant developmental milestones as he turns two yeard old. However, these 2-year-old milestones are general guidelines and in no way establish a set pattern of growth. Every child may take his own time to progress. So, parents should not unnecessarily fuss over their child if he doesn’t seem to be covering the supposed milestones.
Physical Development
During this age, your baby may further learn to coordinate and apply his fine motor skills to do several things. Most parents may worry if their baby has the ideal weight or not. An average 2 years baby weight can be anything around 23 to 28pounds. Some of the physical developments that a baby of 2 years old is likely to display are:
He may be walking up and down the stairs with ease.
He may be able to walk backwards without difficulty.
He may be getting better at balancing himself like standing on one foot which aids him to climb.
He may be drawing circles and other shapes.
He may be able to hold crayons between his thumb and fingers.
He is successfully able to stack blocks to build a tower.
He may wear few items of clothing with little help.
Social and Emotional Development
Your baby may now be ready to share things with a friend or a sibling though not always. He may still prefer playing all by himself though he won't mind a friend playing by his side. The following social and emotional development may get manifested in a 2 years old baby:
A toddler at this age may waver between acting like a big kid and wanting to be treated like a baby. Such emotional dichotomy is typical of this age and may arise if there has been a change in his routine or he wants some of your attention and love.
Your baby may start becoming aware of the gender differences. For example, a boy may imitate his father like his walk or sense of dressing. Girls are likely to copy their moms like trying to put on lipstick.
It is also possible that kids may not imitate the same gender role model. It is totally normal to do so. Kids, being naturally curious, like to experiment with a lot of things.
Your baby may not feel so anxious about being away from you.
Your baby may have some episodes of defiance and emotional outburst.
Cognitive and Language Development
By now your baby may be able to point out the familiar things if he happens to see them in a book like balloons, a dog. But he may not be able to relate to abstract concepts yet. Some of the features of cognitive and language development can be:
Your baby may like to sort out his things and organize them into categories.
He may begin using a few phrases to twine a sentence.
As he starts to build awareness of his separate identity he may talk about his likes and dislikes.
He may be able to comprehend simple instructions and follow them.
You may hear a lot of “why” from your baby. At times he may say it because he wants a genuine explanation. Other times he may use it simply because he doesn’t know how else to express his curiosity.
Your baby may begin to know concepts like sooner or later, better or worse and so on.
Behaviour
Your baby at this age is likely to be very persistent. He may want things in a particular manner and can get frustrated if things don’t happen accordingly. You may have to face some whingeing or whining from time to time. He may also not take kindly to being refused things or on being told no.
Sometimes kids tend to whine because they are tired or hungry. Tackling these two issues may solve the problem of whining. Sometimes kids may feel stressed or want some of your attention. Usually hugging or comforting them may stop the whining. You can also try distracting your baby with some interesting toy or engage his attention in some exciting activity which may divert his mind.
A toddler at two usually tries to test the authority of his parents and the extent of his power in controlling things. So, giving in to his whingeing may not be a good idea. Try to be gentle yet firm when handling such tricky situations. In case the whining persists ignoring it altogether may work.
Food and Nutrition
For a 2 years baby, food can become fun. Your baby by this time may be joining in during family meals. The prospect of eating by using cutlery on his own may be exciting for your baby. You can expect a lot of mess but let him be.
Your baby’s molar teeth may be starting to arise which means his chewing skills are likely to be better. Your baby may develop erratic eating patterns meaning eating a lot during one meal and then hardly eat anything during the next. Resist the urge to force-feed your baby on occasions when he shows no inclination to eat. Offering a healthy snack like a portion of some fruit or piece of cheese to your baby in between meal times may prove helpful. You can also try raw vegetables like carrots, cucumber sticks or slices of tomato.
If your baby seems to be a fussy eater try being inventive with his baby food. For example, allow him to dip raw vegetables like carrot sticks in nutritious dips, use tasty spreads to make rolls, offer him a healthy smoothie made of milk, fruits, and yoghurt, use cookie cutters to shape sandwiches into animals, flowers.
Sleeping
By this age, your baby may be ready to make the shift from a cot to a bed of his own. The transition, however, may be slow and in phases. Your baby may take time to cope with the change. You can start by letting him nap during the day in his bed to get used to the idea. Involve him in setting up his bed like spread his favourite bed sheet; put some of his favourite stuff toys on the bed.
If you are concerned about your baby’s safety while he is sleeping in his bed, you can install a stair gate at his bedroom’s door. You can also put a bed guard or safety rails to prevent your baby from falling out of his bed.
Play and Activities
Activities that involve a lot of imaginative play, language and interaction may prove beneficial for your baby’s overall development. Activities like toy hide and seek, dressing up toys, catching the ball, Simon says can not only be entertaining but also a means to learn different skills.
To channelize your baby’s energy employ him in outdoor play, take him often to the park and on walks to the neighbourhood. He may come across several interesting things on the way which can broaden his awareness levels.
If you like to encourage your baby to share more readily you can introduce him to the concept of taking turns. For example, you can suggest colouring a picture together and then take turns to colour it. Your baby may also enjoy dancing, singing along with actions and jumping.
Tips for Parents
Here are a few tips about your baby’s care and development:
Your baby may be ready to try potty training. Allow him to set the pace and gradually initiate the concept.
It is important that you constantly communicate with your toddler. It will help him to increase his vocabulary and develop a better command over the language.
Maintain a nutritious diet for your baby. Keep introducing a newer variety of foods. For example, if your baby is used to plain idlis try idlis with vegetables or rava idlis for a change.
In case your baby is not fond of drinking milk offer alternative forms like fish, yoghurt, cheese.
It is normal to feel flustered once in a while but try and be patient with your baby. Keeping your calm may help you sort out tough situations rather quickly.
Consult a Doctor if
You can schedule visits to a doctor at regular intervals to weigh and measure your baby’s height. You can discuss any concerns you may have regarding your baby’s growth or diet. It is always better to clarify any lingering doubt than to regret not asking later on.
The terrific twos can be an exciting phase. Your 2-year-old baby is a continuous work in progress as he actively explores the world around him. As parents, you may like to provide him with the right support and encouragement, access to different activities along with lots of love and affection.

Baby's Chapped Lips - Causes, Signs and Remedies
As the weather starts changing, it brings with it differences temperature and humidity levels. This can result in days where your little one’s skin and lips can get dry, which further leads to cracked and chapped lips. Since babies’ skin gets moisture from the milk they feed on, they have drier skin as compared to adults that can easily get affected by a change in the weather conditions.
Should You Worry If Your Baby Has Cracked Lips?
For young babies - especially newborns - dry lips should always be a cause for concern. If ignored for too long, dry lips can end up cracking or splitting and also develop into sores.
One of the reasons for cracked lips in babies is the habit of the baby to constantly suck on his lips. However, cracked lips is a strong sign of dehydration in your child. Weather changes and exposure to the wind can often cause this as well, but if your child tends to breathe from his mouth more than his nose, that could cause the lips to be chapped as well.
What Are the Causes of Chapped Lips in Babies?
The reasons for an infant’s dry lips can vary from personal habits to environmental conditions.
1. Dehydration
The causes of dehydration are two-fold: one is mostly dry weather that can pull moisture out of the baby’s skin, and the second is being in weather that can keep the baby perpetually sweaty. To add to that, if the number of feeds a baby needs is not up to the mark, the body will not be hydrated enough. This can lead to dry lips. Some signs of dehydration in babies are:
Sunken eyes
Crying with no tears
Cold and blotchy hands and feet
A fast heartbeat
A ‘soft spot’ on the baby’s head
2. Deficiency in Nutrition
The presence of chapped lips is another sign that indicates the baby’s current nutrition not being enough. If a newborn baby has been diagnosed with lower levels of certain nutrients in the body, his lips will fail to retain moisture. This is often aggravated by a baby having low immunity.
3. Reaction to Allergies
Allergies can exist in a child in multiple forms, but some of them can be triggered even by wearing certain types of clothes. Sensitive skin can react to a lotion or cream, or even the cloth that is used to drape him. If the mother uses a certain chapstick and tends to kiss the child often, that, too, could trigger an allergy.
4. A Tendency to Breathe via the Mouth
Mouth breathing allows air to be around the lips constantly. This air invariably picks up any moisture that it finds in its path. The presence of an illness that involves a blocked nose often leads to mouth breathing in babies and causes cracked lips, making them uncomfortable.
5. Fluctuations in the Weather
Babies need to be in a safe and controlled environment, especially when they are just born because their skin is not used to the extremities of the weather. Hot summers, cold winters or windy days can allow moisture to soak from every source, leaving your little one with chapped lips.
6. Sucking or Licking of the Lips
The tendency to keep sucking on something is quite strong in the initial weeks. This causes babies to keep poking out their tongue and sucking on their lips constantly. The saliva in the mouth evaporates from the lips gradually and leaves them dry. This repetitive cycle causes cracks to appear on them.
Do Babies Get Chapped Lips Due to Breastfeeding?
A newborn spends the maximum amount of time feeding off the breast, and that may seem to have a connection with the presence of cracked lips. But feeding is not what causes the lips to be chapped. Breast milk, on the contrary, can help chapped lips heal. If the baby latches well and gets enough feeds throughout the day, the chances of dry lips actually seem to reduce.
What Are the Signs of Chapped Lips in Infants?
For a newborn’s chapped lips, the symptoms can be:
Lips being predominantly dry as compared to your own
Cracks appearing on the surface of the lips that may go deeper
The skin around the lips starts getting darker in colour
The lips are sore and have a slightly reddish colour to them
The cracks are intense and cause blood to seep out at times
How Can You Treat Chapped Lips in a Baby?
In the case of babies, there are certain remedies you can use to bring speedy relief and alleviate discomfort.
1. Infant-Safe Lip Balm
One should never resort to applying balms and creams that adults use. There are specific balms available in the market that are made especially for newborns – they are made of natural ingredients that are mild and suited for a baby’s delicate skin. It’s always best to get your doctor’s go-ahead before making a purchase, though.
2. Petroleum Jelly
Made from lanolin, this acts as a potent moisturiser for your little one’s lips, helping heal the cracks faster. The presence of lanolin makes it a gentle healer and is absolutely safe, even if your baby ends up licking his lips and consuming it in that fashion.
Take a tiny bit on your finger and slowly apply it on your infant’s lips. Try using these at night when the baby sleeps so that it stays longer and the lips get the time they need to heal.
3. Coconut Oil
An age-old remedy, many parents opt for using the oil since it is readily available at home. The main constituent of the oil is lauric acid which brings about the healing and doesn’t affect the baby. Disinfect your finger and dab a little oil on it. Rub it on baby’s lips and repeat multiple times whenever dry.
4. Nipple Cream
These creams are manufactured keeping two things in mind - one, that the nipples need to heal, and two, that the baby will end up consuming some cream when he feeds. Hence, this cream is completely safe for your baby and serves a similar function when applied to his lips. Do get a doctor’s green signal before proceeding.
5. Breast Milk
This is the safest and the most natural way to heal cracked lips. Use your nipple to gently put some milk on his lips or dab it with a finger. Don’t rub it on his lips. The milk allows the lips to be hydrated and the natural ingredients accelerate the healing.
What If Your Child Has Chronic Chapped Lips?
Chronic chapped lips in a baby might indicate a nutritional deficiency or even extra consumption of vitamin A. There are rare instances where babies contract Kawasaki disease – a condition that causes inflammation and fever and is prevalent in babies between the ages of 6 months and 2 years. However, dry lips, in that case, are accompanied by other symptoms including fever and red eyes. So if that seems to stay for longer periods, get your child checked.
How to Prevent Cracked Lips in Infants
Prevention is better than cure, more so in the case of infants. To prevent cracked lips in infants, maintain an optimum temperature at home and use a humidifier if needed. Cover your child in proper clothes and protect him from the sun or strong winds. Also, make sure to feed your baby more often during hot weather to keep the baby’s hydration levels optimum.
Chapped lips might be a very common condition for grown-ups. But the sensitive nature of the baby’s skin and the dependency on feeding through the mouth can make it quite painful and uncomfortable for him. Treating this in the right way the moment the signs appear can help it from getting more severe.

At What Age Can Your Child Go to a Daycare/Childcare Centre?
With fast-paced lives and work demands, present-day parents may be required to put their children in a daycare centre. However, the question in most parents’ mind is, "What exactly is the right age for my child to go to a daycare?" Well, this article will help you take the right decision for your child.
What Is the Best Age to Put Your Child in a Daycare/Childcare Centre?
Whether to send your child to a daycare or not is your personal choice. However, in most cases, it may depend on your work schedule, demands and also on your child. Ask yourself a few questions before you make this decision:
Does my child feel uncomfortable in the company of strangers?
Will my child feel overwhelmed in a noisy environment?
Will my child feel comfortable and adjust easily to a new environment or place?
Will my child indulge in various kinds of activities and games with kids from his age-group?
These questions will help you decide whether sending your child to childcare is a sound decision or not. However, if you are wondering about the minimum age for child care, it varies from centre to centre. Some may allow babies as young as a few months old, whereas other centres may be suitable for toddlers and older children only. Therefore, you need to find a daycare centre that is best suited to your child’s age and other requirements.
Benefits Your Kid Will Get from a Daycare/Childcare Centre
A mother is supposed to take care of her baby and forsake everything else for the sake of her baby. Although that's an ideal scenario, it isn't feasible as most nuclear families have working parents. In such a situation, it becomes difficult to stay at home and take care of the child, and the only option that parents are left with is to send their child to daycare. However, if you are sceptical about sending your kid to a daycare centre, here’s what you should consider:
It is a safe, and structured environment where the staff is equipped to take care of the needs of babies and older kids.
It is a great place for your growing kid to develop better social, language and other skills.
Your child will interact and indulge in activities with children from his age-group, thus helping him become better prepared for formal education.
Your child will become more independent and may experience less separation anxiety as he gets habituated to being away from parents from a young age.
Things To Remember While Choosing a Care Centre for Your Child
Some people believe that daycare centres are best suited for toddlers and older children, while others feel that it's best to leave a child in family daycare. Whatever your decision might be, it's important to keep in mind a few things before choosing a daycare centre as per the age of your child:
Babies - 1 - 12 Months
If you are wondering at what age an infant should be considered for day-care, let us clear your doubts. Infants or babies need special one-to-one care from a single caregiver, preferably at home itself. However, there are many daycare centres that offer more personalised facilities for younger babies or infants. Babies need a safe and clean environment because this is the time when they start experiencing the environment around them. It's important to carefully choose and select a daycare centre because babies take time to adjust and develop attachment. Changing centres may not be advisable for young babies.
Toddlers - 1 - 2 Years
Requirements of a daycare centre for toddlers is more or less similar to that of babies. Toddlers are little explorers, and they need to be around someone who lets them be themselves and understands them well. People taking care of toddlers must have oodles of patience and energy. Childcare centres which have a low carer to children ratio work best. One of the best things about sending your child to daycare is that he gets to interact and socialise with same age-group children, which he may miss out on at home.
Preschoolers - 3 - 5 years
Children of this age group are learners and pick up language, social and other skills real fast. So, if you are looking for a daycare centre for your 3-5-year-old kiddo, it should be a place where he not only feels safe and comfortable but also gets to brush up or acquire new skills. Opt for a place that offers an array of activities for your kid.
Every parent has different requirements as far as sending their child to a daycare is concerned. Take into consideration some of the recommendations we've shared in this article and make the right decision for your child.

A short poem for family members close to your heart!
1. ‘A Family Is Like a Circle’ by ‘Nicole M ONeil’
A family is like a circle.
The connection never ends,
and even if at times it breaks,
in time it always mends.
A family is like the stars.
Somehow they’re always there.
Families are those who help,
who support, and always care.
A family is like a book.
The ending’s never clear,
but through the pages of the book,
their love is always near.
A family is many things.
With endless words that show
who they are and what they do
and how they teach you so you know.
But don’t be weary if it’s broken
or if through time it’s been so worn.
Families are like that –
they’re split up and always torn.
But even if this happens,
your family will always be.
They help define just who you are
and will be a part of you eternally.
2. ‘Families Can Be’ by ‘Catherine Pulsifer’
Families can be big or small
The people can be short or tall
They can be full of girls and boys
They can be quiet or full of noise.
Families play a part of life
Even when there is some strife
But families can be full of love
They are truly from God above.
Appreciate your family each day
Don’t wait until they are old and gray
Be sure to say I love you
As families are with you through and through.
3. ‘A Family History’ by ‘Julia Kasdorf’
At dusk the girl who will become my mom
must trudge through the snow, her legs
cold under skirts, a bandanna tight on her braids.
In the henhouse, a klook pecks her chapped hand
as she pulls a warm egg from under its breast.
This girl will always hate hens,
and she already knows she won’t marry a farmer.
In a dim barn, my father, a boy, forks hay
under the holsteins’ steaming noses.
They sway on their hooves and swat dangerous tails,
but he is thinking of snow, how it blows
across the gray pond scribbled with skate tracks,
of the small blaze on its shore, and the boys
in black coats who skate hand-in-hand
round and round, building up speed
until the leader cracks that whip
of mittens and arms, and it jerks around
fast, flinging off the last boy.
He’d be that one—flung like a spark trailing only his scarf.
4. ‘Family Tree’ by ‘Alison Jean Thomas’
It seems strange to me
That a family tree is drawn from the top of the page.
Instead, draw mine with roots deeply planted in firm ground
Like forefathers, whose stories retold,
Nourish us.
Draw the trunk giving support and power,
Strongly branching out
So that young shoots can reach high
And buds,
Some yet unfurled,
May catch dreams in sunlight.
5. ‘We are Family’ by ‘Michael J Burt’
When talking about poems about life and family, this one cannot be left out!
We are family,
although we do not resemble
although I am black and you are white
although you are rich and I am poor
We are family,
even though I am democrat, and you are republican
even though your ancestors are from Iraq, and mine are from Africa
even though you teach the class I’m enrolled in
We are family,
although I’m a poet and you are a singer
although you are old and I am young
although I’m a gentleman and you a lady
We are family,
even though you praise Allah and I praise Jesus Christ
even though I love football and you play soccer
even though you are a Sagittarius and I’m a Cancer
We are family,
although I prefer rhythm and blues and you love blue grass
even though you have a car and I have a bus…to ride
although I have love and you are alone
even though you dress one way, and I dress the other
although my family loves me and yours does not know of you
We are family,
you and I are family,
me and you are family,
no matter what the difference is
family we are, forever
because we are here, and here is earth
and earth is our home
so here, we will live,
we are family.
6. ‘What is Family’ by ‘Unknown’
This simple poem about family is sure to tug at your heartstrings!
What is family without a dog?
That’s like our Mayor without a blog.
You don’t need to watch what you say,
If you require help, you won’t have to pay.
A family can sometimes be a disease,
Insane migraine that smells like cheese.
I never knew what’s the big deal?
A bunch of people that eat the same meal.
In the end, it’s not that bad,
As long as Mom is not always mad.
The trick is to laugh and take this lightly,
If you need salt, just ask politely.
7. ‘To My Sister’ by ‘William Wordsworth’
This popular poem about family is adorable, to say the least!
My sister! (’tis a wish of mine)
Now that our morning meal is done,
Make haste, your morning task resign;
Come forth and feel the sun.
Edward will come with you—and, pray,
Put on with speed your woodland dress;
And bring no book: for this one day
We’ll give to idleness.
8. ‘My Parents’ by ‘Brittany W’
You are both special in every way,
Encouraging me more and more each passing day.
You both are the reason why I’m so strong.
With you two at the helm, not a thing could go wrong.
You’ve both helped me through many trials and tribulations.
You’ve made things better in every situation.
Thank you both for always being there
And showing me that you truly care.
Words could never explain how I feel about you,
But I hope you know that I truly love you two!
9. ‘All In a Family Way’ by ‘Thomas Moore’
My banks are all furnished with rags,
So thick, even Freddy can’t thin ’em;
I’ve torn up my old money-bags,
Having little or nought to put in ’em.
My tradesman are smashing by dozens,
But this is all nothing, they say;
For bankrupts, since Adam, are cousins,
So, it’s all in the family way.
My Debt not a penny takes from me,
As sages the matter explain; --
Bob owes it to Tom and then Tommy
Just owes it to Bob back again.
Since all have thus taken to owing,
There's nobody left that can pay;
And this is the way to keep going, --
All quite in the family way.
My senators vote away millions,
To put in Prosperity’s budget;
And though it were billions or trillions,
The generous rogues wouldn’t grudge it.
‘Tis all but a family hop,
‘Twas Pitt began dancing the hay;
Hands round! -- why the deuce should we stop?
‘Tis all in the family way.
My labourers used to eat mutton,
As any great man of the State does;
And now the poor devils are put on
Small rations of tea and potatoes.
But cheer up John, Sawney and Paddy,
The King is your father, they say;
So ev’n if you starve for your Daddy,
‘Tis all in the family way.
My rich manufacturers tumble,
My poor ones have nothing to chew;
And, even if themselves do not grumble,
Their stomachs undoubtedly do.
But coolly to fast en famille,
Is as good for the soul as to pray;
And famine itself is genteel,
When one starves in a family way.
I have found out a secret for Freddy,
A secret for next Budget day;
Though, perhaps he may know it already,
As he, too, ’s a sage in his way.
When next for the Treasury scene he
Announces “the Devil to pay”,
Let him write on the bills, “Nota bene,
‘Tis all in the family way.”
10. ‘I Love My family So Much’ by ‘Mahfooz Ali’
This is one of the best family reunion poems, suitable for when you see them after a long time.
To be a part of a family like mine
is so divine
where love is shown
hurt is shared
our love for each other is never impaired
we talk
we laugh
we cry
but we are a family
and we do it all together
for as a family
we do it all as one
you hurt one
you hurt all
and as a family unit
we will all stand tall
for we are family
a family full of strength
a family full of love
a family no one can touch
that’s why I love my family so much.
11. ‘Family In My Life’ by ‘Julie Herbert’
My life is filled,
With loving people.
This makes me feel,
So darn grateful.
I am honored for those,
Wonderful people.
They make life so,
Real darn peaceful.
So thank you, Mom,
And thank you, Dad.
You’ve both made me,
So darn glad.
And then there are Grandparents,
Sisters, brothers, uncles, and aunts.
You’ve all given me,
Everything I could want.
12. ‘For a daughter who leaves’ by ‘Janice Mirikitani’
A woman weaves
her daughter’s wedding
slippers that will carry
her steps into a new life.
The mother weeps alone
into her jeweled sewing box
slips red thread
around its spool,
the same she used to stitch
her daughter’s first silk jacket
embroidered with turtles
that would bring luck, long life.
She remembers all the steps
taken by her daughter’s
unbound quick feet:
dancing on the stones
of the yard among yellow
butterflies and white breasted sparrows.
And she grew, legs strong
body long, mind
independent.
Now she captures all eyes
with her hair combed smooth
and her hips gently
swaying like bamboo.
The woman
spins her thread
from the spool of her heart,
knotted to her daughter’s
departing
wedding slippers.
13. ‘A Snowflake Falls’ by ‘Ruth Adams’
One night I saw a snowflake fall.
Past memories it did recall.
And as the snow fell to the ground,
So quietly without a sound,
I watched until a blanket made,
To glistening white - brown earth did fade.
An untouched cover until the dawn.
The sun arose; it was soon gone.
I thought of friendships in the past.
Seemed perfect though they did not last.
And family ties once meant so much,
Now rarely do we keep in touch.
So quickly life can take a turn,
Yet slowly we do seem to learn.
So many things in life can change
And suddenly be rearranged.
In our slumber while we do sleep,
For granted blessings thought to keep,
For same as night does turn to morn,
An untouched blanket can get torn,
The things that we have overlooked,
Ignored, rejected or mistook,
As melted snow does turn to slush,
Relationships can turn to dust.
So this year for the holiday,
Praise God for blessings given today.
Don’t take for granted they’ll remain,
That life forever will be the same.
Let’s be the most that we can be,
For all our friends and family.
Unlike the snowflake on the ground,
Let’s keep in touch and stay around.
14. ‘Look At Your Loved Ones’ by ‘Kelly Roper’
When family are gathered ’round
There’s so much love in the air.
If you ever wonder who has your back,
Just look at your loved ones there.
15. ‘Family Tree’ by ‘Unknown’
Everyone is curious about their family tree,
How many Aunts? Was it one or three?
There’s just so much you could find,
You were living in the blind.
It’s certainly great to know your roots,
For the holidays, you’ll find recruits.
It’s just really nice to know,
What your genetic pool will show.
If your family is real small,
You may need to make a call,
Ask around and grow your tree,
With this knowledge, you’ll be free.
16. ‘The Rose Family’ by ‘Robert Frost’
The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But the theory now goes
That the apple’s a rose,
And the pear is, and so’s
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose -
But were always a rose.
17. 'Sonnett' by 'Christina Rossetti'
Sonnets are full of love, and this my time,
Has many sonnets: so here now shall be;
One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me,
To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home;
To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee
I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;
Whose service is my special dignity,
And she my loadstar while I go and come.
And so because you love me, and because
I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath
Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:
In you not fourscore years can dim the flame
Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws
Of time and change and mortal life and death.
18. ‘The Necklace of Love’ by ‘Frank Stanton’
No rubies of red for my lady —
No jewel that glitters and charms,
But the light of the skies in a little one’s eyes,
And a necklace of two little arms.
Of the two little arms that are clinging,
Oh, ne’er was a necklace like this!
And the wealth of the world and Love’s sweetness impearled,
In the joy of a little one’s kiss.
A necklace of love for my lady,
That was linked by the angels above;
No other but this — and the tender, sweet kiss,
That stealeth a little one’s love.
19. ‘Home, Sweet Home’ by ‘John Howard Payne’
Mid pleasures and palaces, though we may roam.
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home;
A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there,
Which, sought through the world, is ne’er met elsewhere.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
There’s no place like home.
An exile from home, splendor dazzles in vain;
Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again;
The birds, singing gayly, that came at my call —
Give me them — and the peace of mind, dearer than all.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
There’s no place like home
20. ‘My Mother and I’ by ‘Birhana Chan’
My mother and I
Have fun together.
My mother and I
Help each other.
My mother and I
Go places together.
My mother and I
Love each other.
