No Heartbeat At 6 Weeks - FAQs
Foetal heartbeat is one of the indicators of a baby’s growth, health and development. Normally, a baby’s heart begins to beat after the 6th week of pregnancy. If, during an ultrasound, you don’t hear or see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, it is quite natural to get worried.
What Is a Normal Foetal Heartbeat?
A normal foetal heart rate ranges from 120 to 160 bpm (beats per minute) when it is first detected. The heart rate can then rise to 170 bpm around the 10th week and fall to 130 bpm until the end of the gestational period.
While the myocardium in your baby starts contracting around the 3rd week, a sonogram picks it up only after 6 weeks. The table below lists the ideal heartbeat rate at different weeks of pregnancy.

No Heartbeat At 6 Weeks - Is it Normal?
It is very common to not hear a heartbeat at a 6-week ultrasound scan. In some cases, moms-to-be don’t hear their baby’s heartbeat until they’re 7 weeks pregnant.
Not hearing a foetal heartbeat at 6 weeks is normal and there’s no reason for worry. The gestational age of your pregnancy may also be inaccurate. Due to an irregular ovulation pattern or inaccurate estimate of your last menstrual cycle, you may not really be 6 weeks pregnant. This could also be the reason for not hearing a heartbeat.
The mom-to-be’ds body itself may be one of the factors. A tipped uterus or a large abdomen may make it difficult to hear the foetal heartbeat.
Apart from these, the type of ultrasound also matters. An abdominal ultrasound is less sensitive and may take longer to identify a heartbeat. On the other hand, transvaginal ultrasound is more accurate, especially during early pregnancy, as it is inserted into your vagina and has better access to the uterus.
Is There a Chance of Miscarriage If You Don’t Hear or See a Heartbeat During the Ultrasound?
Lack of foetal heartbeat indicates a miscarriage in the following instances:
There’s no heartbeat and your hCG levels start
You don’t hear a heartbeat in subsequent ultrasound checkups.
Ultrasound measurements indicate that a heartbeat should have been present.
Your doctor may also measure the crown to rump measurements with the foetal pole as a basis to determine the risk of a miscarriage.
If an embryo is larger than 5 millimetres and has no heartbeat, it may indicate a miscarriage. Also, if a gestational sac which is larger than 8 millimetres has no yolk sac or a gestational sac which is larger than 16 millimetres has no embryo is could indicate a miscarriage.
What If There Is No Heartbeat At the 7th Week Ultrasound Scan?
While no heartbeat in follow-up ultrasound scans may signal a miscarriage, there is still hope. If there’s no heartbeat at the 7th week ultrasound, it may still be too early. Assuming seven weeks have passed after your menstrual cycle, you may still be at four weeks during your first ultrasound and five weeks at the subsequent one in case of irregular periods.
No Foetal Heartbeat At 8 Weeks Ultrasound – Is There Any Hope?
If your conception date is accurate and there is no heartbeat at 8 weeks, then you might have lost your baby. However, there are also instances of healthy babies who didn’t have a heartbeat at 8 weeks.
What If You’re Told That You’ve Had a Miscarriage?
If your gynaecologist tells you that you’ve miscarried and suggests a particular course of treatment, make sure you’re confident of the treatment being the right choice. If you aren’t 100% sure, ask for another follow-up ultrasound. You can also wait for a few more days so long as you’re not at risk of an ectopic pregnancy. Alternatively, also get a second opinion from an Ob-Gyn.
Is It Possible to Hear the Baby’s Heartbeat At Home?
According to doctors, it’s difficult to hear foetal heartbeat at home with the human ear. Some expecting mothers claim that they can hear their baby’s heartbeat through their belly, but this can only be possible in a quiet room and in the later stages of pregnancy. If you can’t hear your foetus’ heartbeat at home, schedule a sonogram with a qualified gyneacologist.
How Can You Keep Your Foetus’ Heart Healthy?
There are several reasons why you may not hear your baby’s heartbeat at 6 weeks. Although there’s little you can do about it, you can take the following steps to ensure your foetus’ heart is healthy.
Take folic acid during pregnancy as it prevents congenital heart defects in the baby.
Quit smoking if you do. Did you know that 2 percent of heart defects in babies are caused due to smoking in the first trimester?
Keep your blood sugar levels under control, especially if you have gestational diabetes.
Avoid using Accutane if you have acne as it puts your baby at risk of foetal heart defects.
Stay away from alcohol and drugs to avoid foetal alcohol syndrome and other complications.
Remember that 6 weeks may be too early to hear your baby’s heartbeat. But if you don’t hear it even after 8 weeks, then consult your gynaecologist to rule out possible complications.

What is Tipping/Baksheesh?
Tips are also called Baksheesh in India. ‘Baksheesh’ is a Persian word, which can be referred to as connotation or gratuity offered to a person for the services offered. In simple words, when someone in India renders you any kind of services, you may pay a bit extra than the decided amount as an act of appreciation for the services rendered by that person. It is entirely a personal choice on how much you should tip in India because tipping is not a mandatory culture in India.
How Much to Tip in India?
So, if it's not certain on the rules about how much you should tip in India, then how should one decide on tipping? Well, it is a debatable topic on how much to tip but it mainly depends on how pleased or satisfied you were with the services offered to you. There may not be clear cut rules but there are some loose or random guidelines that may come handy while tipping.
1. At Hotels
When you are staying in a hotel, tipping may become a bit confusing because there are so many people and it may become difficult to decide regarding whom to tip. If ambiguity crops in, choose a guy that served you the most or with whose services you are most satisfied with. Sometimes the bell boy may keep waiting outside your room for a tip after dropping off your luggage; you can have some tens or fifties handy and slip a note or two if you wish to. The best way of tipping in a hotel would be to tip in a central tipping box. These boxes are usually placed on the reception counter and you can tip as you clear your bill while leaving the hotel. The ideal budget should be around 5 to 7 percent of the tariff per night and then multiplying it with the number of nights you stayed at the hotel. If you are concerned about tipping in 5-star hotels in India, well, under such situations you can reduce the tipping amount to 3 to 5 percent.
2. At a Restaurant
When it comes to tipping in Indian restaurants make sure you check the bill before tipping. In most of the restaurants in India, the restaurants usually charge an added amount in the form of service charge. However, do not confuse service charge with service tax because where the latter is taken by the government as part of the tax, the former gets credited in the restaurant’s account. If the restaurant adds service charges you can still tip because there is no surety whether that amount is going to get added to the staff’s salary. If you liked the services or it was exemplary, you can tip anywhere between 5 to 10 percent of the bill value. However, if no service charge is deducted then giving 5 to 10 percent of the bill value is considered polite. Again, if the bill amount is more, you may reduce the tipping percentage to 5 to 7 percent.
3. Tipping Car Driver
When you plan to hire a cab for pick up or drop from the airport or railway station, tipping any amount between INR 50 to 100 is considered a good tip. However, if you have hired a car for a day tour or going a long distance, you can tip the driver anywhere between 200 to 400 rupees depending on your satisfaction level. If on a local city trip you can base your tip on the fact whether the cab driver covered all the local spots. If you have hired a car for a few days and you are travelling with your family and wondering how much to tip a private driver in India, well, if there are 1 to 3 travellers, you can tip anywhere from 300 to 600 per day and if the travellers are anywhere between 3 to 5 then tipping anywhere from 500 to 800 will be considered polite. India is a land where people are warm and make friendly relationships too soon and your driver may be one of them, if he takes you to his house and offers you a home-cooked meal or offers you any kind of such services that were not a part of his duty, you may tip him more.
4. Tipping Tour Guides
When you are on a group trip, you can tip INR 50 to 100 to your guide. However, if you are with your family or travelling alone, INR 100 to 300 is a fair amount as a tip. Again the amount basically depends on how satisfied and happy you are with your tour guides services. If you are delighted with the kind of services you received, shedding anywhere between INR 300 to 1000 will be great!
Where Else to Leave The Tip?
Here are some other places where you can tip:
Anyone who helps you to carry your luggage or bags
The porters at a railway station, airport or hotels
At temples, mosques or other religious places in the form of offerings
To a boat-man or the ferry guy
Tip or pay a few extra bucks to cab-driver takes you quickly to your desired destination.
When Not to Tip?
Tipping is not a norm that is followed in India. However, it is just a polite gesture that most people adopt to express their gratitude towards the services offered by another person. Therefore, if you are not satisfied with the service, do not give a tip. Refrain from rewarding poor service or bad interaction.
Other Guidelines to Remember while Tipping in India
Here are some guidelines to remember or some tipping practices in India:
Whenever someone offers you help in India, you can offer to tip. However, if you do not wish to offer a tip, refrain from taking help.
At hotel, you should make use of tipping boxes for giving tips.
People who help you with your luggage at the hotel, airport or other places can be tipped.
Be very discreet while giving tips or offer tips in a quiet manner. Attracting unnecessary attention may attract beggars or you may have to tip others too.
Sometimes employers may request you to tip their staff, you may do so if you like the services offered.
Offer tips to people or under circumstances when people go out of their way to help or assist you.
Tipping is not a customary tradition in India; however, people still expect it. It is a personal choice on how much you wish to tip. You could make out a shopping list with your child and ask him to write the easier ones. So if your child wants a toy, ask him to include it in your list. Leave little notes for him in simple words, in random places, like on his pillow in his toy basket, or even his school bag. This will encourage him to try reading it on his own and he may even try to write back. Start reading to your child as early as possible and ensure that you weave some reading time into his daily routine. It can even be as little as 15 minutes. The key here is to be consistent and get him interested in reading.
Let him choose what book he wants to read. Take him to your local library and let him choose the books he wants to take home. Having a subject of interest will encourage him to read the book. Make your child tell you the story you have read to him in his own words, so that you can be assured that he has understood what was read out to him. A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
