Baby Not Eating - Reasons and Feeding Tips
When your baby is between 4 and 6 months of age, you may want to give him something other than just liquids. If your baby eats, you will be proud, but most babies do not accept transition swiftly. It’s a messy process that involves a lot of tantrums and confusion. They enjoy the fact that they are doing something new like eating. It's like exploring a new side of their mouth. But, most babies tend to slow down with the eating as their growth is less rapid, and hence they need less energy. Sometimes, you will find that your baby will be refusing food! This little person is making his opinions heard. Do not worry. There are many reasons why your baby is not eating, and you do not need to rush them off to the doctor just yet.
Reasons Your Baby Is Not Eating Well
It can be troubling when you see that your baby isn’t eating properly. He would not be able to tell you what is bothering him which makes it difficult to deduce the cause. However, you can check the below list to see what are the possible reasons for refusing food:
1. Too Many Fluids
Perhaps a baby had too much fluids during the day, whether juice or milk-based drinks. Giving these fluids can lower his appetite, so limit everything outside meals to a bare minimum.
2. Too Small
Your baby is not eating food because they may be too young to eat solids. A lot of mothers make the mistake of moving from liquids to solids too quickly. A good point to start with solid foods is 6 months.
3. Tune It Out
A baby could be distracted by innumerable things such as TV, outside noise and what not. Babies process their environment differently, and something as simple as noise will draw them away from their food.
4. The Growth Change
As a baby grows, he requires less to eat; so you need not worry if your child's appetite is shrinking with age. Baby growth is only natural and you should be proud that your baby is growing as per the development milestones.
5. Full Tank
He may be little, but he knows his belly. If he’s refusing every morsel, clamping his mouth shut and pushing the spoon away, your little bundle of joy is telling you that he has had enough. Trust him; he knows his body pretty well!
6. Doesn’t Want Something New
If your baby has decided that he doesn’t like this new food that you are giving him, he is likely to refuse it. Most kids grow out of this phase with time.
7. Allergies
If your little one could be allergic to certain foods and he will try to tell you that this particular item is not good for him. Monitor his behaviour, check for an allergic reaction and see if he is in physical distress.
Tips for Getting Your Baby to Eat
Here are some simple tips you can incorporate into your busy parenting schedule to convince your little one to eat what you serve:
1. Give Him Independence
Allow your child to feed himself. Do not force feed him. Keep options and let him choose what he wants to have. Do not give him certain food item because you like it or is healthy. Let him select and over the period of time he will be ready to try new things. You can also introduce finger foods to your baby.
2. Choice Matters
If you want to see your baby guzzling food, then offer a variety of healthy food choices. And do try to be creative with whatever you cook for him. Experiment with various colours of vegetables and fruits; children are attracted to colours, they will surely eat.
3. Threats Won't Work
Don't threaten them by saying things like “No playing with your toys if your plate is not clean”. This only creates a power struggle. You are not teaching him in a positive way but it is a kind of
4. Don’t Bribe
A lot of parents turn to the “One more bite and you will get a cookie,” approach, but this way you’re encouraging unhealthy eating habits. So abstain from doing these things.
5. A Family Affair
Try to have meals as a family. If your little one sees his siblings eating things they don’t like, they’re more likely to do the same.
6. Don’t Give In
If they firmly state they don’t like something, don't take it off the menu. These little people adjust to new tastes slowly, and you need to introduce it into their diet repeatedly till they realise that they have no choice and give it a try.
7. Play With Texture
Once you switch to solids, you might realise they’re not ready to chomp on big pieces, so you either switch to purees or opt for soups.
8. Get Messy
It’s a discovery of something entirely new. Let them explore the way they choose! They will smash, sniff, and throw it across the room to really get a feel of what this strange entity is that you expect them to put in their mouth. So, be ready for that.
9. Fool Them
If they don’t like a particular thing, change its appearance or get them excited about it. For instance, if they don’t like the idea of eating lamb but prefer chicken, just tell them it’s chicken.
10. Ask a Pro
It’s always a good idea to consult an expert, especially if a 2-year-old baby is not eating food. He would be able to tell you the appropriate solution for your little one and his eating needs. What’s more, he will also offer some sage advice to put your question, ‘My baby is not eating anything, what should I do?’ and your mind to rest.
When Should You Consult a Doctor
Keep a watch on your baby’s eating habits for a few days when he is refusing food. If he is still not eating a healthy amount, then consider taking him to a specialist. Do not panic if it has only been a few days as your baby could be adjusting to a new growth cycle. Although, if he seems to be having allergic reactions to certain foods, take him to a doctor immediately.
In rare cases, if you see these symptoms in your child, it is time to consult a paediatrician:
Vomiting
Blood in stool
Forceful vomiting
Dehydration
Weight loss
Gagging
Persistent diarrhoea
Abdominal pain
Remember, you are going through what every new parent out there has gone through. There is no reason to worry. Your little one is simply communicating his opinions to you and letting you know he would like certain foods, a certain way. Your role as a parent has expanded to include a fresh responsibility that can be quite enjoyable! You do not need to give in nor freak out about your baby's health or why your baby is refusing food. This is another step on the parenting path. Find your space within the realm of parenting and have fun with it.

Tips for Parenting a Child Prodigy
Some of the greatest people like, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Mozart, Gary Kasparov, and Nadia Comaneci have one thing in common, i.e. child prodigy. Researchers are divided on whether child prodigies are born or made and then there are those who believe there is a bit of both. Regardless of what the cause may be, if you think your child is a prodigy, here are some of the things you need to understand about them.
What is a Child Prodigy?
A child prodigy is a person (a child) who shows extraordinary skills at a very young age in one or more domains such as mathematics, science or music. A child prodigy possesses unusually in-depth knowledge in his subject of interest for his age and is often intellectually superior to his peers. While the performance of gifted children in the class can be two or three years above their age, a child prodigy can match even the adult professionals in the field.
What Are the Traits of a Child Prodigy?
When you interact with children who are a prodigy, their traits become immediately apparent. Here’s what makes a child prodigy:
1. Large Working Memory
Our working memories enable us to carry out our routine tasks. For example, working memory is used when we need to memorise a phone number someone tells us for a while before writing it down, which we do and may forget after some time. However, it's different with a child prodigy. Child prodigies have an enormous working memory that puts them in the top 1% regarding memory capacity. They can hold information in their heads while simultaneously processing and controlling other incoming information.
2. Higher IQ
It is no surprise that these children are also found to have higher IQ that’s well above the general population. The average IQ of the general population is 100 and prodigies have IQ’s over 128. Although it’s not always the case, it can be said that child prodigies are intelligent but not in the way that we would expect the IQ scores to predict. Sometimes as seen in cases of autism, the highly gifted prodigies are not so different from the rest of the population.
3. Complete Dedication
Child prodigies have a deep commitment to their area of interest and are able to focus intensely on topics for long periods of time. You would often find them completely absorbed in their interest and when this is continued for years, they develop skill and attain mastery of their subject. This is referred as the ‘rage to master’ by Ellen Winner.
4. Extraordinary Talent and Skill
Most often a child prodigy exhibits exceptional talent in one area; some children can show talent in multiple areas. It varies from child to child and the gift that they possess. Also, factors such as the domain of interest and support available to develop it from the family, education and the environment contribute to it.
How to Raise a Child Prodigy
Observing your child’s academic performance and general behaviour will help you identify a highly gifted child. Formal intelligence testing by a clinical psychologist can then confirm if a child is gifted. If you discover that your child is gifted and are wondering how to raise your little prodigy, here are a few tips.
1. Allow Your Child to Lead
In most cases, a child’s passion becomes clear from an early age. If you notice your child shows an interest in a particular field like music or dance, you can help nurture that talent by enrolling him to an activity class. The best way to go about is to support your child's interest and let him take ownership of his talent and its development instead of pushing it on him.
2. Work With Your Child to Set Goals
Help your child to set short-term goals that he can achieve in a stipulated time will build his confidence and help him stay focused. Once the goal setting is done, your role as a parent should only limit to ensuring that his actions support his goals. As your little one gets older, give him more control over how he'd like to be in discipline and manage his work.
3. Do What Works for Your Child
As a child's training time will increase, you as a parent may find it hard to balance family with your child’s schedule. Sometimes it will be challenging to keep up with your child's developmental curve and fulfil demands such as arranging for extra resources or expert mentoring. If your kid is a prodigy, he may not fit into regular schools and may get bored easily with the curriculum. In such cases, he may have to be homeschooled.
4. Lookout for Pitfalls
The high achievers are also prone to pitfalls that go unnoticed under the brilliance of their accomplishments. They are often affected by perfectionism, anxiety and low sense of confidence as the very qualities that contribute to their success make them susceptible to it. Like all children, they require love and care from their parents and need to understand that their failures or success does not influence parental love. Another pitfall to consider is the effect the gifted child’s big dreams and support have on a sibling in the family. It’s important to recognise the passions of both and value them equally.
Are Prodigies Made or Born?
Scientists who study child prodigies, they often argue between nature versus nurture. Two well-known prodigies exemplify the debate: Carl Gauss, one of the most important mathematicians in history, comes from a humble upbringing, while Mozart, was from a privileged background who had childhood lessons in music. Research, however, suggests that for most prodigies, the genetic component has a significant influence. They are often observed to be born with innate capabilities. However their talents alone aren’t enough to fully manifest themselves, dedication and practice are much-needed to develop their natural abilities. Prodigies can demonstrate their talent by the age of 10 or 11, but some show it as early as 3 to 5 years. A supportive environment is critical to nurture their innate abilities, and if it stays unexplored, it may never develop altogether.
With adequate nurturing, child prodigies can be helped to realise their talents fully. They also need to put in sustained efforts to develop their skills.

Apply For Maternity Leave Like a Pro
A request for maternity leave isn't the same as applying for annual or privilege leaves. It entails a longer period of absence from work. How you apply for it makes all the difference, as you would also want to get all the benefits due to you during this phase.
Stepping out of your job for three months can be stressful for you and your colleagues no matter how happy the impending occasion is. You want to make sure that everyone around you at work is prepared for your absence. Moreover, you need to know when to take maternity leave so that it doesn’t cause anyone inconvenience. So, if you find out you’re pregnant here are some guidelines to help you apply for maternity leave like a pro.
The Professional Way of Applying for Maternity Leave
1. Follow the hierarchy
You may be brimming with excitement and can’t wait to tell your colleagues. But you should hold on to your feelings and tell your boss first. You don’t want the news getting to your boss before you can tell him or her. So act like a professional and be the first to tell him.
2. Don’t be clueless
Writing a maternity leave application letter is an important aspect of a well-arranged pregnancy. Before you pen down your application, you should be aware of the full maternity benefits offered by your company and its maternity leave policy. If you're in doubt about anything, find out from your boss or the person who'll be sanctioning your leave.
3. Communicate correctly
When applying for maternity leave be sure to communicate your requirements correctly, so that there’s no confusion in the weeks surrounding your due date. Be specific about the start date and the desired length of your leave. Don’t forget to mention your due date and attach a copy of your doctor’s certificate in support of it. Include your planned return date too. If you feel you would need extended leave, mention it in your letter and specify the duration of the time required.
4. Give adequate notice
Be sure to check your company’s policy to find out the adequate notice period of handing in your leave application. Better still to hand over the maternity leave notice well in advance, so that you and your colleagues or superiors can plan ahead. Even make necessary arrangements to cover your period of absence.
5. Plan your absence
A long absence from work is always going to be inconvenient for you, your colleagues and your boss too. If your maternity leave is going to coincide with important work then you need to decide upon a few things. Can you rely on anyone else to step in for you? How much of it can you put on hold? Do you need a replacement? You need to be able to set things up in your absence to ensure work is not hampered and that you don’t return to a complete mess.
If you’re in an organization where there are people to fill your shoes in your absence, consider yourself lucky. If you can follow these guidelines in applying for maternity leave correctly it will help you enforce your rights in the event of a disagreement and ensure a smooth transition in the weeks preceding your due date. Every coin has two sides, so did you 2020, continuing in 2021...
Hi, I am Manali Kulkarni, my journey of 2020 a would be mother to a new mom. Of course every woman goes through this, nothing different but at the same time unusual for me. What should I say? Was I fortunate enough because 2020 was full of shocks and surprises... My in-laws and husband were not very happy with the news about my pregnancy, but I took a decision and moved with time, as I am a teacher used to follow my schedule on myself with no mental or physical help... I believed in God and time.... As time passed due to Covid had to stay at home and this happened exactly when I needed rest. of course it was difficult for me to move to my parents place, so had to spend my time with in laws which they were poorly ready to take my responsibility. Thanks to my yoga teacher and Doctor Mughdha Joshi who took a lot of care during that time. Meditation and pranayam, really helps us to boost our energy during delivery , I had a big challenge of maintaining my BP and sugar, which I did with the help of yoga, exercise, listening to music, reading books and tried to balance my diet, One thing I would like to share is, one must fulfill the cravings which I missed as nobody was there to care& I could not do it on my own thanks to lockdown, it helps the mother and the baby to grow healthy mentally. I also missed the dohal jeevan, a function due to Covid which did affect my emotions, and I still miss it truly, during pregnancy one should attend various functions as it makes one feel loved and happy. Even my school gave me stress-free work and stood beside me like a family. Thanks to technology I managed to communicate with my parents and my sister which was a big support, without losing hope I have normally delivered a happy and healthy baby boy at the age of 33, the best gift of 2020, all credit goes to my parents, Doctor, yoga teacher, my friends, my school. The only request I would like to do to the would be mothers is that, listen to ur mom, doc, do yoga regularly , be happy, stay away from any stress, enjoy your motherhood in any situation and most important be mentally prepared for it.
Thank you 2020,
Yours sincerely,
Manali Kulkarni

Bouncer Swing Buying Guide
What is a Bouncer Swing?
The ingenious baby bouncer swing is one of the most coveted baby gears currently available in the market. Flexible, soothing, entertaining and cozy, it is conceived to give babies quality time and help the mothers get on with their chores with their precious tots close-by and safe.
Essentially, a bouncer swing consists of a removable swing seat that doubles up as a bouncer. The bouncer can support babies up to 8 kg and the swing can normally accommodate babies up to 13 kg.
Features of a Bouncer Swing
Bouncer Swing
Must Haves
Reclining Seat: The bouncer seat needs to be spacious to accommodate the possibility of a full recline position.
Removable Head Support: An infant head support is essential for babies under six months.
Motion, Speed, Sound and Light Control Unit: Most bouncer swings offer a control panel which allows motion, speed, sound and light settings in accordance to your baby's preference.
Safety Harness: A five-point harness is the ideal safety belt to keep your baby snug and secure, to prevent injuries that could be serious or potentially fatal.
Removable and Washable Seat Cover: A removable and machine-washable cover, that is also dryer-friendly, is easy to clean and maintain.
Frame: To ensure even weight distribution of the growing child, and allow for some safe movement within the harness. As the baby's weight increases, sturdiness of the frame becomes an essential feature to carry the extra kilos.
Battery Slot: A fully battery-operated bouncer swing allows for more options in music, vibrations and swinging.
Portability: Easy to carry, fold and store away. Good portability would require a light frame, smooth, but stable articulations and a body that is easy to assemble and dismantle.
Good to Haves
AC Adapter: It comes in handy when the batteries wear out. It allows the swing to operate on electricity instead of batteries.
Toy Bar: To hang up your child's favourite toys or mobiles for the child to play with.
Canopy: To provide shade if the baby wants to take a nap.
