Baby Blowing Raspberries - A Developmental Milestone
An infant goes through numerous developmental milestones that his parents anticipate and celebrate. Some of them are well known, like rolling over, crawling or even talking. A lesser-known one, perhaps, is blowing raspberries. Here, we discuss the meaning of this relatively underrated milestone, also known as ‘razzies’ or spit bubbles.
What Is Meant By Blowing Raspberries?
The giggle-inducing bubbling sound that infants make with their lips and tongue is known as blowing raspberries or ‘razzies’. It creates a funny noise akin to a motor humming. It happens when a baby blows bubbles from the mouth. This is hilarious to watch and produces an overload of oxytocin for mother and child as they bond, but it is also a significant development and antecedent to the language capabilities of the baby.
When Do Babies Start Blowing Raspberries?
Babies start blowing bubbles as early as two months of age. When a 2-month-old baby starts blowing bubbles, it is a sign that he is experimenting with his mouth and that it is a precursor to speech development. But not all infants blow bubbles or raspberries. Those who spit and blow bubbles, also display complex mouth movements like licking their lips often. Although babies begin blowing bubbles around two months of age, the true razzies begin at around five months. By the sixth month, your little one will blow bubbles, making raspberry sounds and drooling.
Why Do Babies Blow Bubbles?
Blowing spit bubbles helps prepare the baby for future developmental milestones like chewing, drinking, and talking, all of which are essential for his survival. An increase in the production of saliva from 3 to 6 months also helps the baby prepare for the arrival of his first tooth. The raspberries are concurrent to babbling sounds, imitation of other sounds, and cognitive smiling.
Does Blowing Raspberries Help Improve the Digestive System of the Baby?
Blowing raspberries also has an important connection to the digestive ability of the baby. The saliva released help in neutralising stomach acids while converting starch to sugar during the digestive process. When a baby blows bubbles, it helps in reflux control, softening of the food, and in the prevention of tooth decay.
How Does Blowing Raspberries Benefit a Baby?
When a baby blows raspberries, he may make funny noises and may strain facial muscles while concentrating. This is, in fact, helps him develop control on his tongue, lip, and cheeks simultaneously.
1. Facial Muscle Workout
Blowing bubbles and raspberries helps the baby exercise the muscles needed for independent lip movement, separate from the jaw and tongue. It also improves the lip tension required later to seal a cup while drinking water and other liquids.
2. Babbling
Blowing bubbles also help in the language development and speaking abilities of the baby. The babbling begins to sound like distinct letters of the alphabet like m, d, a.
3. Helps in Teething
When a baby blows bubbles, it also helps in teething. The excess saliva produced when a baby blows bubbles helps soften the gums for the arrival of the first tooth.
How Can Parents Encourage It?
Blowing raspberries is just a small yet crucial milestone. If your baby is blowing raspberries, encourage this behaviour as it will help develop speech and language acquisition skills in your baby. Here is what you can do encourage it:
Imitate every little sound that your child makes. Be conversational with your child. Try adding new sounds to the conversation and pause to see if the baby is mimicking you.
Sing to your infant and bring in variation to the pitch and tone of words. Sing fast and then go slow. Try a few words loudly and then go into a soft whisper.
Help your baby make a rolling sound by rubbing your finger on his tiny lips.
Gently blow raspberries on the baby’s arm or belly to help him understand how it is done.
Sing along to familiar songs and let your baby watch your lips as they move.
Pretend-play with the baby and make him use toy phones to help him babble or talk.
Engage the baby’s sound and sight skills for better understanding.Recite rhymes that involve hand movements while singing.
Most importantly, let your child hear your voice all the time. Talk to him as often as possible to help him develop his facial muscle strength.
When to Consult a Doctor
Babies most likely learn to laugh, coo, and turn towards sounds before they attempt to blow bubbles and babble. Most infants blow raspberries by the age of 5 months. If your baby doesn’t blow raspberries by this age, you don’t have to panic. Some babies skip the raspberry stage altogether, but they make sounds with their lips and mouths – and this is a good sign. However, if your baby doesn’t show any sign of blowing bubbles by eight months of age, consult a paediatrician. The doctor will be able to look for signs of speech delay or underlying neurological problems in your baby and may suggest a treatment for the same.
Blowing raspberries is an important developmental milestone. When your baby blows bubbles, you may not expect it and might discourage it – considering is as a bad habit, but don’t. Spit bubbles are actually a workout for your little one’s mouth. So encourage him to blow raspberries and enjoy the raspberry-blowing phase by blowing back at your child, giggling with him, smiling at his smile, and by having a wonderful time together.

Home Remedies for Teeth Sensitivity to Deal with the Pain
Teeth sensitivity is something many of us suffer from. Since our teeth are super-sensitive, almost anything may cause sensitivity like not brushing teeth well, brushing teeth for too long or too many times, acidic and sour food, sweet food, teeth grinding, tooth decay, cavity, recent dental work, etc. Thus, preventing teeth sensitivity is difficult. However, there are few home remedies which can help you to deal with the dental condition.
How to Treat Sensitive Teeth at Home
Tooth sensitivity is that sharp pain which you experience when you take something very cold like ice-creams or hot like tea, coffee or something sour like tamarind or lemon. However, this condition is curable and listed below are few such home remedies for sensitivity in teeth.
1. Oil Pulling
You can try this with either coconut oil or sesame oil. This remedy helps in flushing out the Streptococcus mutans bacteria from your mouth which helps in curing teeth sensitivity. Both the oils have anti-bacterial properties and thus reduce as well as prevent plaque build-up. This remedy improves overall oral health and prevents dental problems.
How to Use It
Take a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil (extra virgin, if possible) in your mouth.
Swirl the oil around in your mouth for a good 15-20 minutes.
Then spit it out and rinse your mouth well with warm water.
Then brush your teeth with toothpaste (preferably ones which are meant for sensitive teeth).
Make this your morning ritual before brushing your teeth every day.
2. Salt Water Rinse
Salt has anti-bacterial properties and therefore rinsing your mouth with salt mixed in lukewarm water kills the bacteria which causes sensitive teeth and also heals a toothache or sore gums which may have been caused by new dental work.
How to Use It
Rinse your mouth with lukewarm salty water.
Swirl it around your mouth, and if in case of severe pain, you can just hold it in your mouth for some time.
Spit it out and continue the same with the rest of the water in the cup.
Then, after you have finished, rinse your mouth well with plain water twice.
Do this rinse twice daily until you get the desired result.
3. Clove with Olive Oil
Cloves have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties. It also works as an analgesic and therefore good for toothaches and sensitive teeth.
How to Use It
Make a paste of ground cloves and olive oil or sesame oil.
Apply this paste on the affected teeth/tooth for an hour or so.
Then rinse it off with water.
In case you have clove oil, just take a little of the oil in cotton and place it on top of the tooth or you can also rinse your mouth with lukewarm water mixed with 5-6 drops of clove oil.
You may use either of the remedies twice daily until the sensitivity gets cured.
4. Guava Leaves
Guava leaves contain flavonoids, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which gives relief in teeth sensitivity and toothache.
How to Use It
Try chewing on some tender guava leaves and then spit them out.
You may even boil few guava leaves in some water and rinse your mouth with it after it cools down.
Try either of the guava leaf remedies twice or thrice a day to get good results.
5. Garlic
Being anti-bacterial and a natural anaesthetic, Garlic reduces tooth sensitivity, toothache and any kind of infection.
How to Use It
Crush one garlic clove and mix it with a few drops of water and salt.
Apply it and leave it for some time.
Lastly, rinse your mouth with salty lukewarm water.
You may also rub half a garlic on the affected tooth/teeth for a good 10-15 minutes.
Once done, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water.
Follow either of the garlic remedies 2-3 times a day until the sensitivity or pain ceases to exist.
6. Oregano Oil
This oil has anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Thus it helps in reducing pain or sensitivity in the teeth due to the cavity or other dental problems.
How to Use It
Dab some oregano oil onto a cotton ball and apply it on the affected tooth. Keep it for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
You may even mix few drops of the oil in a cup of lukewarm water. Swirl the solution in your mouth and spit it out.
Repeat either of the remedies 2-3 times daily.
7. Hydrogen Peroxide
The anti-bacterial properties in hydrogen peroxide help in killing germs which cause cavities and other oral problems. It is also an excellent teeth whitener.
How to Use It
Mix 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide and water in equal amount.
Use this solution to wash your mouth.
Do not do this for more than 2 -3 times a week and do not swallow the solution; spit it out completely.
8. Salt and Pepper Paste
Both these ingredients are analgesic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Therefore, apply the mix of both these ingredients helps in reducing teeth sensitivity.
How to Use It
Make a paste of the salt and pepper using a few drops of water.
Then apply it on the sensitive teeth.
After about 15-20 minutes, rinse off your mouth with lukewarm water.
Repeat this remedy every day until the sensitivity in your teeth ceases to exist.
How Can You Prevent Teeth Sensitivity?
Teeth sensitivity can be quite painful and can affect your daily life. Therefore preventing it is best. Here are a few tips by which you can stop your teeth from getting sensitive.
Toothpaste which is for sensitive teeth contains potassium nitrate. This helps to block the tubules in the dentine which have been exposed due to the wearing off of the teeth enamel. However, regular and continuous use will only help.
Brushing your teeth the right way can help you to prevent sensitive teeth. Brush your teeth with soft bristles and brush gently for two minutes. However, brushing for too long may wear away the tooth enamel and cause sensitive tooth.
Consult your dentist for pain barriers that are done to prevent sensitivity in your teeth. Getting a fluoride varnish or plastic resins can help cure teeth sensitivity for some time until it does not wear out after a few months or a year.
Put a mouth guard at night or change the way you sleep if you grind your teeth at night. If you have a habit of grinding the teeth when tense or angry, be alert and conscious to stop yourself from doing so.
Try to prevent your mouth from getting dry especially when you are down with a cold and breathing through your mouth since you have blocked nostrils. Having a dry mouth causes oral infections resulting in dental problems. Drink a lot of water and avoid too much intake of coffee and tea to overcome this problem.
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water after eating or drinking something. You may also use home-made mouth wash to rinse your mouth twice a day to aid oral hygiene.
Make lifestyle changes like avoiding acidic food and caffeinated beverages which may cause tooth decay and other dental problems.
If you suffer from acid reflux, consult a doctor and get it treated at the earliest since acidity erodes the enamel from your teeth and causes sensitivity.
What Foods Should You Stop Eating If You Have Food Sensitivity?
Foods which are sour, hot and cold are the primary causes behind sensitive teeth. However, avoiding the foods listed below will help you in preventing teeth sensitivity.
Fizzy, black and carbonated drinks
Ice-creams
Hot caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee
Hard candies like lollipops and lozenges
Citrus fruits like pineapple, lemons, oranges, grapefruits
Acidic food
Alcohol
Tobacco products
FAQs
Below, we answer some frequently asked questions for people whose teeth are sensitive to cold and hot beverages, sour and acidic food.
1. When to Talk to a Dentist about Teeth Sensitivity?
You should consult a dentist if you have too much sensitivity in your teeth or you experience sensitivity in any particular tooth or gum area.
2. Does Flossing Help Sensitive Teeth?
Flossing when done gently can help in removing plaque. This plaque if not removed properly can cause the teeth to rot and decay resulting in sensitive teeth. Floss once a day to remove plaque to aid oral health and prevent sensitivity.
3. Does Brushing Too Hard Cause Teeth Sensitivity?
Brushing your teeth too hard or for too long may cause the tooth enamel to erode. This exposes the dentine which connects the tooth’s nerve endings. When this is exposed and comes in contact with something cold or too hot, it causes pain.
Although sensitive teeth are a common dental problem and not a serious health hazard, it causes temporary uneasiness and pain. Therefore, try avoiding the condition by brushing and flossing your teeth gently twice a day and visit the dentist at least once a year.

Overcome Your Miscarriage Fears
It is said that with pregnancy, a woman completes all her roles. The ability to give birth to a child is a special and life-changing experience. Unfortunately, due to certain unforeseen factors, some pregnancies terminate spontaneously.
Sometimes, a pregnancy can go awfully wrong. When this occurs, it is called a miscarriage. Approximately 15% of known pregnancies conclude with a miscarriage. In a majority of these cases, 80% of them occur in the first trimester and are least likely to occur past the 20th week mark.
What is a Miscarriage
A miscarriage is a medical condition that is termed spontaneous abortion. However, it is not an abortion, as it is commonly understood. It is the loss of an unborn baby, which occurs prior to the 20th week of gestation. If the miscarriage occurs past the 20th week of gestation, then it's called a late miscarriage. This type occurs in very rare circumstances.
There are some common symptoms women experience while having a miscarriage. These are:
Severe abdominal pain
Cramping
Bleeding that systematically progresses to heavy
Passing of tissue
Fever
If you are pregnant and experience such symptoms, please contact your obstetrician/gynecologist immediately or visit your local emergency room.
Currently, the actual cause of miscarriage is not completely understood. Miscarriages that occur in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy are usually caused by chromosomal abnormalities within the infant. Chromosomes are minute cellular structures, which carry the body’s genetic information. Genes are responsible for determining an infant’s physical attributes such as hair and eye colour, gender and blood type. These chromosomal problems are a chance occurrence and are unrelated to the parents’ health.
In some cases, miscarriages may also occur due to the following factors:
Hormonal problems
Uterine bleeding
Infection.
Exposure to workplace or environmental hazards such as toxic agents or radiation
Kidney disease
Incompetent cervix
Lifestyle choices such as drinking alcohol, smoking, consuming drugs
Radiation
Thyroid disease
Congenital heart disease
Medications such as Accutane
Severe malnutrition
Uncontrolled diabetes
Currently, there is no evidence, which suggests that sexual or physical activity leads to a miscarriage.
How Are Miscarriages Diagnosed And Treated
Your obstetrician/gynecologist will request for an ultrasound test and also perform a pelvic exam to confirm that a miscarriage has occurred. If the uterus has cleared, no treatment is required. Sometimes, the uterus does not completely empty out, in which case dilation and curettage is performed. In this procedure, dilation is induced and any placental or fetal tissue left behind is removed. Medications may be administered as an alternative dilation to perform the same procedure.
What Are Some Ways To Avoid Miscarriage
In most cases, the miscarriage cannot be prevented because the cause is difficult to determine. However, most women can lower their risk of a miscarriage by taking the following precautionary measures:
Not smoking while expecting
Not consuming illegal drugs or alcohol while pregnant
Eating a well-balanced and healthy diet which includes at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
Preventing certain infections such as rubella
Being at a healthy weight before becoming pregnant
Your Weight And Preventing Miscarriage
Women who have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30 are at an increased risk of miscarrying. The best method of protecting your health and that of your unborn child is loose the excess weight BEFORE becoming pregnant. A healthy weight is the best to reduce your risk of miscarrying. Even during pregnancy, it is absolutely vital that you maintain some level of activity just as swimming or walking. Perform all exercises only after consulting with your physician.
Learning that you are expecting can be an elating experience but then finding out a few weeks later that you have miscarried can throw you into an emotional tailspin. For many women, dealing with a miscarriage often sends them into depression. Some develop a fear of miscarriage and feel they won't be able to carry a baby to term. Others may feel inadequate and feel a deep sense of loss. It is at this time that women need a lot of support and comfort from their family and friends. Speaking to a doctor about getting pregnant again and how to avoid miscarriage in the future can also help. Read more
