How to Treat and Prevent Neck Rash in Infants
A neck rash in babies is a common occurrence, as babies have soft and delicate skin. Babies usually have chubby necks with many skin folds, which makes them vulnerable to rashes, particularly till the time they are unable to hold their necks up by themselves. Most rashes are not a cause of concern, as they disappear on their own when babies learn to hold their neck up without any support.
What is Neck Rash in Infants?
A neck rash in infants usually occurs when the skin turns red and itchy. The affected skin is likely to appear bumpy or scaly. It normally appears in the skin folds of the neck. Infants of about four to six months commonly suffer from neck rashes due to various reasons like fungal infections, prickly heat, skin irritation, and so on.
What Causes Baby Neck Rash?
For the effective treatment of neck rashes in babies, it is necessary to know the cause of the rash first. Some of the reasons for a rash on a baby’s neck can be:
1. Prickly Heat
A baby may develop a neck rash due to prickly heat, especially during summers when the temperatures are high. As a result of this, sweat may get trapped below the skin and block the sweat ducts. Red bumps can appear on the baby’s neck, which may turn itchy. Such a rash is also called heat rash or sweat rash.
2. Stork Bites
Sometimes a red/pink patch or birthmark may appear on the baby’s neck if the blood vessels beneath the skin get dilated or stretched. The birthmark is likely to be more noticeable when the baby cries or if the room temperature changes. Stork bites are usually temporary and vanish with time.
3. Milk Drool
During breastfeeding, some excess milk may get spilt on to the baby's neck, which gets collected in the skin folds. If not cleaned properly, the skin may remain moist and eventually develop a rash.
4. Fungal Infection
A rash may appear on the baby’s neck due to a fungal infection. Fungi like candida tend to thrive in wet, warm places. The skin folds of the baby’s neck may become the perfect breeding place for such fungi if sweat and moisture get trapped in them.
5. Skin Irritation
The creases in the skin of the baby’s neck may continuously rub against each other and also against the baby’s clothing. This continual friction may irritate the skin, resulting in a neck rash.
Neck Rash Symptoms in Babies
The typical symptom of a neck rash in babies is the appearance of red spots which may result in itchiness and pain. Some babies may develop a fever as well. In some cases, babies may experience a loss of appetite. Overall a baby may feel irritable and distressed.
Treatment for Infant Neck Rash
More often than not, infant neck rash can be treated without any difficulty.
1. Cleaning And Soothing The Skin
It is desirable to use a fragrance-free, mild baby wash to clean the baby’s neck properly, using gentle strokes so that the skin is not irritated further. Gently pat the neck dry after washing, with a soft cotton towel, instead of rubbing the area. Also, air-dry the skin folds in the neck, so that it is completely dry and devoid of any moisture. After washing, you may apply a gentle moisturiser or skin ointment on the baby’s neck, in order to soothe the skin.
2. Dealing With Common Neck Rashes
Rinsing the neck area with cold water may bring the baby some relief from pain and irritation. Common neck rashes usually heal on their own and may not require any medical intervention. If a baby develops a neck rash due to fungal infection, the doctor may prescribe a yeast cream or anti-fungal cream to treat the neck rash. Applying topical 1% hydrocortisone cream may also prove useful. However, prolonged use of hydrocortisone is not advisable.
3. Treating Heat-Related Rashes
You may like to remove or reduce the baby’s clothing to allow the skin to breathe and cool off. Use pure cotton, which is a soft and breathable fabric. Keeping the baby in an air-conditioned room or cool place can help relieve some of the irritation and discomfort faced by him. Applying calamine lotion on the neck rash can help in calming and comforting the skin.
Home Remedies to Cure Neck Rash in Your Child
Here is a list of some simple home remedies that can prove beneficial in curing neck rash in babies:
1. Light Cotton Fabrics
Dress your baby in breathable, soft cotton clothes, instead of synthetic clothing that may irritate the baby’s delicate skin. Avoid overdressing your baby, as too many layers of clothes can trap sweat inside and not allow the skin to breathe freely.
2. Mild Detergents
Always use gentle detergents that are devoid of harsh chemicals to wash the baby’s clothing, towels, and linen. Also, unscented detergents are preferred.
3. Corn-starch
You may find putting a little corn-starch on the neck rash after bathing the baby useful in keeping the affected area dry and moist-free. This can stop the rash from growing further.
4. Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress on the neck rash may provide relief to the baby from itchiness and pain. It may also soothe the skin by reducing inflammation. A cold compress can be applied a few times a day. Always remember to pat dry the area afterwards.
5. Good Hygiene
Practising good hygiene habits for the baby can protect him from getting rashes. Bathe the baby regularly, paying special attention to the skin folds while cleaning. Properly dry all parts of the baby’s body, especially the creases. Keep in mind to clean any milk that may have spilt on to the neck while breastfeeding.
6. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has anti-microbial properties, which makes it an excellent home remedy to treat neck rashes in babies. Applying coconut oil on the neck rash can help decrease inflammation and itchiness.
7. Boiled and Cooled Water
Avoid using regular water to bathe your baby, as it may contain harsh mixtures or harmful microbes that can aggravate the neck rash. It may be a good idea to use boiled and cooled water instead. Also, use lukewarm water, rather than hot water, to bathe babies.
8. Baby Talcum Powder
Sprinkling baby talcum powder, particularly in the skin folds, after bathing the baby can help prevent rashes and control the growth of existing ones.
Preventive Measures
Certain preventive measures to be kept in mind while dealing with neck rashes in babies are:
It is important that the baby’s neck is cleaned properly and remains dry, in order to prevent the development of a neck rash.
Avoid over bathing your baby, as it can make his skin too dry. You can always wipe the baby clean with a damp cloth, in case he creates a mess.
It may help to keep the baby in a well-aired room or cool temperature, especially during summers. Heat and humidity may lead to the formation of a neck rash.
Resist the urge to over-dress your baby in too many clothes or cover him with heavy blankets.
Make it a point to dab away the baby’s drool or dribbled milk that may get collected in the skin folds of the baby’s neck to deter the appearance of a neck rash.
When to Call the Doctor
Sometimes, treating the neck rash with home remedies may not be enough. There can be times when you should call the doctor, such as the following:
If the neck rash shows no sign of improving or disappearing
If the rash seems to be spreading to other parts of the body
If the baby develops a fever along with the neck rash
If the neck rash turns into pus-filled blisters
Neck rashes in babies are more likely to occur during the early months after birth. Therefore, it is important for parents to take special care during this time to prevent the appearance of a rash. Moreover, it is easy to treat neck rashes with simple home remedies. Nonetheless, if the baby has a fever along with the rash, which starts to turn into pus-filled blisters, contact your doctor right away. Read more

Rice Water for Infants: How to Make & Health Benefits
Rice water is the starch left behind in the water, along with other nutrients, when boiling rice. Most mothers prefer feeding rice water to their babies before introducing mashed rice in their diet. As rice is known to be a low allergen food, it is an ideal first solid food to be fed to babies when they wean from breast milk. Being easy to digest and nutritious, it is a great drink to start with for babies older than 5 months. Apart from giving energy, rice water also has other benefits in treating diarrhoea, eczema and fever. Read further to learn the benefits of rice water.

Benefits of Rice Water for Babies
Rice water which is easy to prepare has several nutritional and functional benefits for the baby, some of them being:
1. Weaning
Rice water is the perfect starter to wean the baby from breastfeeding. Many of the Asian communities start with feeding rice water before introducing solid foods in the diet. Being nutrient-rich and easy to digest, rice water is perfect to prep the baby’s stomach for solid foods. However, it lacks all the essential nutrients contained in breast milk and should not be given as a replacement.
2. Vitamin Rich
Rice is a good source of vitamins such as niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and vitamin B6. These essential vitamins are involved in the development of the nervous system, vision, skin, digestive system and converting the food consumed into energy. Being water soluble, they dissolve into the water when rice is boiled in it.
3. Treats Diarrhoea
Rice water is effective when given along with oral rehydration solution (ORS) to treat diarrhoea in infants. It reduces the bowel movements and makes it less watery. It also has more calories than ORS and releases carbohydrates slowly in the intestines. It can be used along with solids foods and ORS to help the baby recover from diarrhoea. Rice water for baby constipation is the other way in which it can be highly useful. Offering plenty of water in every sip, it eases constipation.
4. Soothes Eczema
Rice water can be used to soothe the baby’s dry and scaly skin in case of eczema. Exposing skin to bath water containing rice starch is shown to significantly improve healing of the skin. Among mothers who worry about using too many creams and ointments, rice water works well as a treatment free of side effects.
5. Energy Booster
The drink is rich in carbohydrates and a great source of energy for all babies, while being easily digestible. By releasing carbohydrates gradually, it keeps the child’s energy levels stable throughout the day.
6. Fevers
It is a great source of energy and nutrients when babies have a fever and eat poorly. Along with providing them strength, it can also help bring down the fever.
7. Economical
Rice water can be made with all types of rice available in the market, as almost all the varieties of rice have mostly the same nutrient content. Nothing goes waste in the process, as the rice can be consumed by the mother while the babe is fed rice water.

Rice being the staple food in many parts of Asia contains plenty of essential nutrients. The approximate nutritional values are tabulated below:

Are There Any Disadvantages of Rice Water?
1. Lacks Adequate Nutrition
Since rice water mostly contains dissolved nutrients from rice, its nutritional value is not nearly as much as whole rice, and hence, does not provide sufficient amounts of calories lost during diarrhoea. As it lacks sodium and potassium, which are vital to the body, it can only be used along with ORS to treat diarrhoea.
2. Not a Replacement for Breast Milk
Rice water also cannot act as a replacement for breast milk or formula as it doesn’t contain all the essential nutrients required by the baby.
3. May Cause an Allergy
If children are prone to food allergies it is advisable to apply a little rice water on the skin to test before feeding them. If they are allergic to oats and barley, it is likely that they are allergic to rice as well. Some of the symptoms of an allergy include bloating, stomach ache, vomiting, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, rashes etc.
Caution Before You Start Giving Rice Water
To safely introduce rice water into your baby’s diet, always consult the paediatrician on when to start rice water for babies
Always check for allergies before feeding the baby. Apply a little rice water on his skin or feed in small amounts at first and look for signs such as vomiting, rashes, difficulty breathing etc.
Never replace rice water with milk or formula. You can always mix rice water with formula powder for added benefits
It is important to thoroughly rinse and clean the rice before boiling it. Since pollutants or contaminants can cling to it in the rice mills, rinsing it thoroughly with warm water is necessary.
Selecting good rice also ensures that the proper nutrition reaches the baby. Since most of the varieties of rice have more or less the same nutrient value, choose medium or small-grained rice, as it comes at a lower cost
Avoid adding soy milk along with rice water, as it can aggravate food allergies. Cow milk can be added, provided your baby is already used to it.
Exercise caution with brown rice. Although brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, it contains fibrous layers which need to be strained effectively. These fibres can be difficult for the baby to digest.
How to Make Rice Water?
Making rice water is an easy process and requires only two ingredients.
2 tablespoons of rice
1 cup of water
Procedure:
Thoroughly rinse the rice with warm water to remove any dirt or impurities.
Place the rice in a saucepan and add water. Boil it until the rice becomes soft and tender.
Strain the rice and collect the water in a cup.
The rice water is ready. For babies older than 12 months, a pinch of salt can be added for some taste.
Dilute the rice water before feeding it to the baby.
Rice water is a simple and safe addition to the baby’s diet, whether they are weaning or old enough to eat solid foods. Consult your paediatrician before introducing rice water to your baby for the first time.

8 Women-Friendly Destinations in India
It has been taken for granted that India is not safe for a woman to travel alone or in groups. However, the country still offers some breathtaking destinations which offer safety for ladies. Refer to our list of such amazing women-friendly places in India before you make your travel plans.
Longing for some “me” time with no one to answer to and no chores to complete? We believe every woman needs to experience the joys of a solo or girlfriends-only vacation. However, the thought of being alone in India can be daunting. Fret not! We recommend a few women-friendly destinations where you can rediscover yourself and unwind – with your mind at rest.
8 Women-friendly Travel Places in India
1. Mysore, Karnataka
Karnataka in southern India has long been considered one of the safest places for a women traveller. Even late in the night, though it's best to avoid being out, the streets are packed with tourists. This city of palaces and amazing attractions like Chamundi Hills, Jubilee Chowk, Karanji Lake and St. Philomena's Cathedral is a sheer delight if you love history and architecture. Before leaving, pack in a visit to Devraj market and capture the beautiful flowers (perhaps on camera) to surprise hubby!
2. Hampi, Karnataka
If you've been putting off that visit to the iconic Virupaaksha and Vittala temples and many waterfalls of Hampi, here's good news: the beautiful place abounds in friendly and cultured people who will put your reservations as a solo woman traveller to rest. You can let your hair down, shop for traditional bohemian clothes and go rock-climbing. Your family will love to see you in your new liberated avatar.
3. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Few things can equal the spectacular sight of the evening aarti at the ghat of the Ganges in Varanasi. Essentially a tourist destination and frequented by scores of people over the year, the city is considered a safe choice for women. There are also a number of women helplines if at all you need any help. In Varanasi, you can emerge from your daily routine of housework and immerse yourself in the fragrance of incense sticks, music on a boat ride or the changing moods of the waves.
4. Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir
Women and serenity should not be separated for long! If you're the adventurous sort, you will love Ladakh for it's mesmerising landscape, unique weather, the stunning nine-storied Leh palace and the quiet Shanti Stupa. One of the most peaceful spots in our list of women-friendly cities in India, we do recommend getting your girlfriends for this one. The ruggedness might ask for some help!
5. The Andamans
A group of islands primarily supported by the tourism industry, Andaman has designed its laws and regulations to ensure safety for women. There are authorised guides to show you the sights and sounds especially if you're exploring rainforests. Opt for beach resorts that offer snorkelling, scuba diving and island-hopping. Let the white beaches and transparent waters give you breathtaking memories but do check with your doctor before leaving if you are pregnant or have heart trouble.
6. Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh
Considered widely to be a safe and peaceful weekend getaway, the intricate temple carvings here are among the most beautiful art creations in the world. The Archaeological Museum and temples of Lakshmana, Parshwanath and Adinath are also breathtaking. The best part is how you can recover from your strained mommy nerves by indulging in an Ayurvedic massage or a yoga session.
7. Kaziranga, Assam
If you're a wildlife or photography enthusiast, Kaziranga has a lot to offer you. Known for conserving the rare species of one-horned rhinoceros, it's wetlands, savannah grasses, and mystical foliage make for an amazing experience. Since the park is government-run, its elephant rides and jeep treks are considered safe options even for women travellers. We still advise keeping with the group; you just might spot leopards, elephants, and the Assamese macaque!
8. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
Few destinations parallel Rajasthan in the warmth of the native population. The golden city boasts of a rich culture and ethnic tradition which you can experience from atop a camel! Reconnect with yourself with a spectacular view of the setting sun and top this up with mouth-watering Rajasthani food. The friendly ambience is sure to make you feel welcome and safe.
There, you can now embark on a trip to one of these women-friendly destinations without working yourself up about safety. However, the golden rule must never be forgotten: exercise caution, travel light, dress appropriately and be wary of strangers. Better safe than sorry, we say! Read more

Live and Let Your Child Live
Life really changes after becoming a parent. There is always a person who watches you and observes you constantly. He wants to be like you. There is no better feeling in the world than this! There is someone who wants to be like you gives you a joy that you cannot explain in words. It's unconditional love. But everything comes with a price tag.
As a parent, I worry that what if my child adopts the other side of me. I am not supposed to show it to him but sometimes when emotions and carelessness take over, I cannot help it. I am growing a lot rather than growing up him. Parenting is not rocket science. It’s just that you need to introspect and nurture yourself more.
We happened to travel outstation for a family function last month. My one-year-old was happily roaming around and babbling. There was one old lady, a grandmother of another 1-year-old. She was playfully asking her grandchild, "Where is her head, eyes, etc.?" The kid cheerfully responded to her grandma’s questions. I was admiring the cuteness of the kid.
In no time the old lady turned around and started asking my daughter the same questions. My daughter didn't answer her and was staring at the grandma pointlessly. The grandma had a sarcastic dialogue ready, “She is one year old. Why is she not answering any questions?”
I wanted to say, “Oh! She understands only Turkish; maybe you should speak in that language.” But I didn't respond. I don't in many situations where I feel it is useless. It is better to walk past from certain things and certain people who are not good to you. It's good for your inner peace!
Many times in my life, I have felt lonely in a group just because they talk about things that I do not know or I’m not much familiar with. I have felt bad for not knowing certain things. But over the years, I have realised that whatever I know is just a drop in the ocean. No one in the world is a jack of all trades. So when a grown-up can’t handle a situation like this, imagine how a little one can go through it?
Whenever you put a child in a situation like it, try placing yourself in it. How will you feel? A child is not a trash-bin in which you can throw anything you want and don’t want. Asking questions to a child and expecting a child to have the knowledge about everything because a fellow child knows a lot or perhaps more is a crime. If you think reciting poems or knowing national emblem is the benchmark because someone else's child knows it is absolute foolishness. As you know very well, knowledge doesn’t have a horizon. You can never know about all the things in the world. Limiting your child’s intelligence within a spectrum like growing a bonsai coconut tree. You cut, shape, and limit its growth, whereas it has the potential to grow bigger.
A child has better things to do and a better way to live. A child observes everything and explores a lot. A child admires nature in an absolute way. If you don’t know anything, you don’t have any opinions, your mind is free to receive what is there. Just be with them and see things through their eyes. It will be fine. If a child can admire simple things in life even when he grows up, then he has been raised right. That is the right parenting! And that's the parent I want to be.
I want to admire kids as they are. I don’t intrude in their innocent games. I don’t attack them with questions often unless they are interested in speaking. But I keep an eye on them to prevent undue incidents. I don’t try to impose knowledge. They know better than us and they know enough for their age. It’s just that they don’t know to communicate better.
We should not try to rob childhood from any child. Please don’t expect your child to behave properly every time. When someone says, "well-behaved" kid, I cannot control my laughter. “What exactly
does it mean with a child?”
Messy rooms, scattered plates, spoiled clothes, hanging toys, roaring noises will be a beautiful memory to have when you look back. You will have loads of stories to tell when your child grows up. After all, you yearned to live this life with your little bundle of joy. Don’t let external situations or some people affect you. Just be with your child and let him live!
