When & How to Take a Pregnancy Test
Are you trying to conceive and have missed your period? Then the only thing lurking in your mind right now must be whether you are pregnant. This is the most nerve-wracking moment of any woman’s life. Now, all you would want to do is grab a pregnancy test kit and find out the truth! But pregnancy test kits are not always accurate. Some basic steps must be followed to get a reliable result. This article will guide you on how and when to take pregnancy tests at home and when to visit the doctor to get a confirmation about the arrival of the most awaited member of the family.
What is a Pregnancy Test?
A pregnancy test is designed to check the level of hCG (Human chorionic gonadotrophin) in the blood. hCG is a hormone which is secreted by the fertilized egg after it implants itself in the uterine lining. The test can be taken at home with the help of a pregnancy kit which is available in all drug stores. You can also visit an OB-GYN for the same. If you plan to take the test at home, then you must follow all the steps mentioned in the kit. If you prefer to see an OB-GYN, then he/she will test your blood sample. Please note that a blood test is more accurate than a urine test.
How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
From the moment you conceive, your body starts changing drastically. Your body produces hCG which doubles every 36 to 48 hours as your pregnancy progresses. This hormone can be detected in your blood as well as urine. The pregnancy test done using a kit works by detecting the level of HCG in your urine. As soon as your urine meets the specially treated strip in the kit, within minutes it shows whether hCG is present in your urine or not. If 2 coloured vertical lines appear in the test area, it means that your test is positive, and if only a single line appears, it means that the test is negative. However, this may vary from kit to kit. Hence, it is always advisable to take a second opinion from your gynaecologist.
How Accurate are Pregnancy Tests?
The accuracy of the test depends upon following the exact directions as mentioned in the test kit. It also depends on testing on the right day and the right time. First, you must remember that if you follow the steps mentioned in the kit accurately, then the result is also 99% accurate. But once again, it is always advisable to double check the result with a blood test through your gynaecologist.
When is the Right Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?
Have you been planning to have a baby and indulging in sex with your partner sans any precautions? And have you missed your periods, since then? If yes, then you must go for a test to confirm if you are going to have a baby.
1. What is the Best Time of the Day to Take a Pregnancy Test?
The best time of the day to take pregnancy sample is the first urine in the morning. When you sleep throughout the night, your body holds the urine in the bladder for the whole night. This urine is highly concentrated and has high levels of everything, including hCG. Hence, if the urine test for pregnancy is done first thing in the morning, chances are that the result will be 99% accurate.
2. What is the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test After a Missed Period?
Taking a test too close to the date of the missed period may give you a false positive, so it is advisable to wait for a week before using your kit!
3. Early Signs That Indicate That You Should Perform a Test
Some early signs of pregnancy that can act as an indicator to take the test are as follows.
If you notice spotting or light bleeding, then you can consider taking a pregnancy test. This usually happens when the embryo implants itself in the uterus
If you feel cramping in the tummy
If your breasts feel tender and you get a feeling of discomfort in your breasts while wearing your bra
If you feel exhausted all the time
If the smell of food and other things around you makes you uncomfortable
If your taste buds start longing for food, you never liked before or if you feel aversion towards your favourite food items
If you notice excess vaginal discharge along with soreness
If you feel constipated most of the time
These signs show up in the first seven to ten days of ovulation. Take the test if you notice one or more of these symptoms.
What are the Different Pregnancy Tests Available?
Pregnancy tests are of two types, a urine test that you can do at home with the help of the pregnancy kit and the other is a blood test which is done in a medical centre. Both the tests scan the presence of hCG hormone in your body. hCG a pregnancy hormone that gets produced in the body only once the embryo is implanted in your uterus.
1. Blood Test
A blood test is the most accurate way of confirming a pregnancy. Here is a detailed analysis of blood tests done to confirm pregnancy.
2. Qualitative HCG Test
This test is done at the medical centre. This test is usually recommended 10 days after you miss your period. This test scans the traces of hCG in your blood sample and therefore the status of your pregnancy.
3. Quantitative HCG Test
This is a blood test conducted in a medical centre to scan the presence of hCG in your body. This test is more accurate and traces the exact amount of hCG in your blood. This can detect even the lowest level of hCG during the very early stage of pregnancy.
Urine Test to Confirm Pregnancy
A urine test can be done at home and is very convenient. All you have to do is buy yourself a pregnancy test kit from any medical store and you are good to do the test all by yourself. These kits come with instructions. Just follow the instructions on the kit and you will most likely get an accurate result. You can do the urine test one week after you have missed your periods.
1. What’s the Best Time to do This Test?
While you can do the urine test any time during the day, yet the morning time as soon as you get up is the best time to perform the test. This is because the first urine of the morning is highly concentrated and the chances of getting an accurate result are higher.
2. How Long Does the Test Take to Work?
It takes about 5 to 10 minutes for the urine test to work. Any result that you read after 10 minutes can be misleading. Also, don’t look for a result before 5 minutes have passed. That will be inaccurate too.
3. What Does a Positive Pregnancy Test Look Like?
When a second line appears along with the control in the pregnancy test stick, it means that you are pregnant. In some test kits there will be 2 separate windows and in case of positive result, lines will appear in both the windows. Please note that the same result must be confirmed with a blood test at a medical centre.
4. What Does a Negative Test Look Like?
In case of a negative result, only the control line appears and nothing else. You can repeat the test one week later again to confirm this result or visit your doctor and get a blood test done.
5. What About a Faint Line?
A faint line means that the amount of hCG hormone in the blood is very less. This is quite acceptable during early pregnancy. The concentration of hCG increases in the body as the pregnancy gets older.
Pros and Cons of Taking a Test to Confirm Pregnancy
While pregnancy test kits are quite popular and easily available these days, it helps to weigh the pros and cons of using one.
Pros:
A pregnancy test is the fastest way to confirm if you are pregnant or not after you miss your menstrual cycle.
Even in scenarios where you were not ready to conceive but had a birth-control failure, you can confirm your pregnancy status through a pregnancy test.
Sometimes in case of early pregnancy symptoms, you may get close to accurate result 4 to 5 days prior to missing your cycle, through the pregnancy test.
Cons:
Sometimes the result of the pregnancy test done using a kit can be misleading.
In many cases, even chemical pregnancies appear positive on the kit but later lead to a miscarriage, while in some cases, the results appearing as negative in the pregnancy kit have turned out to be positive later.
Hence, it is advisable to get a blood test done after the pregnancy test at home for the confirmed result.
FAQs
Here are a few frequently asked questions about pregnancy test kits:
1. What if no lines appear on the test?
If no lines appear on the pregnancy test stick, then the test will stand invalid. In most of these cases, the problem is with the kit itself. To be on the safer side, repeat the test after 2 to 3 days.
2. When does the test need to be repeated?
In cases where a faint second line appears on pregnancy test kit or no lines appear at all, then a repeat test may be required just to be sure.
3. What does 99 percent accuracy mean?
When a second line appears distinctly on the kit, then it is 99 percent confirmed that you are pregnant. 99 percent accuracy means, if the test were repeated 100 times (with a kit from the same brand/company), it will give correct result 99 times. so there is a 1 in 100 chance that the test give an incorrect result.
4. Does taking medication affect the result of a pregnancy confirmation test?
Yes, taking medication does affect the result of the pregnancy confirmation test. As discussed before, in order to be absolutely sure, a home pregnancy test or a urine test must be followed by a blood test at a medical centre.
All pregnancies are different and so are the circumstances. This article will help you to determine the status and circumstance of your pregnancy. Here’s wishing you a happy pregnancy.

Leg Development in your Newborn
Waiting for your little one to be on his feet? As parents we are eager to observe this milestone in our babies. We wait to watch our tiny bundles of joy take the first steps of life by standing on their own little feet.
Your little one will take his first steps only between the ages of 8 to 12 months. Initially they will require support by holding on to your fingers or things at home, but as months pass by they learn to take their steps alone. But right now, when your moppet is still an infant, he will need the opportunity to move and stretch his leg muscles in order to promote leg development.
When Does Leg Development Begin?
Leg development starts later than arms and upper body development. As a newborn, his leg muscles are still in the early stages of developing and could even display stiffness at first. He will not have too much control over his legs at this point. Gradually, with physical development and supported by your touch and gentle exercises, his leg muscles will get stronger. The stronger your baby’s leg muscles are the sooner and steadier on feet your baby will be. It is important for you to understand and encourage your baby to flex his leg muscles as he nears this important milestone.
Eventually, as your baby crosses 6 months, she will start using both her hands and legs to crawl. During this stage she will stretch, flex and strengthen her muscles to push herself forward. At about 8 months she will begin to hold your hands or hold on to objects to stand. At this point she has gained enough strength in her leg muscles to be able to bear weight and stay steady on her feet. At round 11 to 12 months your tiny tot will make her first attempts to take those tiny little steps to move forward.
Importance Of Leg Development
Leg development is one of the most important milestones in your baby’s life. For him to be fit and capable in the outside world, he needs to learn to sit, stand and walk. The strengthening of the leg muscles help in gross motor development which help babies sit, stand, and run. It also helps babies explore, be mobile, and interact with the environment. They can actively participate in activities with kids their age. Babies gain control and posture of their leg muscles by stretching and moving their legs.
Encouraging Your Newborn’s Leg Development
Although there is still plenty of time for your newborn to take his first steps, it is important that you encourage and engage him in activities that enhance leg development:
1. Tummy Time
A good idea is to give your baby frequent tummy times. Tummy time not just aids in the development of upper muscles, but it also enables your baby to bend her legs back from the knees and use it for forward movement. This way she will learn to crawl and walk sooner.
2. Leg Exercises
If your baby is experiencing stiffness in his legs, make sure you help him move around. Simple activities like a massage, a roller-coaster movement of his body, and gently cycling his legs are useful.
3. Play Time
Getting your baby a baby gym that lets him tug at things and use his limbs is a good idea to fuel his muscular development. Also make sure you let him move around in open and free, though protected, space at home.
Use the developmental milestones of leg development as a guidance to monitor your baby’s progress. Some babies achieve them sooner, and some push in a few months later. However, if you think something is amiss, you should speak to baby’s paediatrician to diagnose a developmental delay. Read more

Teaching your Child True Sportsmanship
A sporting attitude is necessary to promote healthy minds, healthy bodies, friendships and life skills which ensure a good life for the children. Being a true sportsman will give them the right attitude to deal with problems later in life.
Sports form an important part of preteens as it helps them stay active. While parents must always encourage their kids to partake in an organised structure of play, and support competitive behaviour, it is vital to instill an attitude of sportsmanship. It is important to teach them that playing is for fun and not for winning. The children should be taught that, winning or losing is not the main goal, but to participate and play in a team is more important for them. Also, there will be days when they will win and when they lose. They must not get disheartened, and must take it as a part of the activity. Children who do not exhibit sportsman like behaviour are more likely to deal poorly with other problems in life. They end up blaming someone or the other and in many cases their own self which leads to low self-esteem. On the contrary, a good sportsman will grow to become a good leader, team player and a confident person.
Helping Children Learn Good Sportsmanship
Children should be taught to have fair expectations from themselves. No lying, cheating, fraud and unfair means should be followed by any child to win or achieve success. Congratulating the winners is a sign of real strength and a child must learn this skill. Also, being a good loser is one of the most difficult thing to learn. Sports is a good way to teach children to accept defeat. Parents and coaches must help teach this skill.
A child should be taught to have a positive attitude towards other children. He should be taught never to criticize other players and mock them while at play.
Teach your child that he does not have to be the star player or the winner every time, it is okay to lose sometimes and have a setback. A person learns more from his setbacks than from his achievements because this way he realizes his strengths and weaknesses in the game.
Always praise the efforts put in by your child, irrespective of his winning or losing. At times, when he is feeling he has not performed well, teach him not to lose hope and work harder the next time.
When your child is acting inappropriately, explain him why his actions are unacceptable and how he should act. Make sure your expectations are consistent and strict. The child must be taught to listen to the advice of parents and coaches to have excellence in sports.
Teach him why it is not just about him but his entire team. Instill in him the spirit of teamwork so he learns to appreciate others’ efforts as well. This will help him a great deal to tackle problems that he might face as an adult.
The best thing about letting the child participate in a sport is that the child gets chance to experience emotional highs and lows in a controlled and friendly environment. Sports can give your child the chance to learn about being part of a team, winning well, bouncing back from a loss and coping up with unpleasant experiences such as injury or aggressive behavior. The most important thing a child learns is to enjoy the fun of participation and teamwork.
So adopt the right measures and help your child grow with real sportsmanship. This will not only help him during play but will also impact other aspects of his life in a positive manner. He will grow to become someone who is responsible for his actions and takes defeat at its face value. Read more

Types of Childhood Illnesses
Much as we dislike it, illnesses are a part of growing up. It is a heart-wrenching experience to see any child suffering through illnesses. Arm yourself with information on dozens of childhood illnesses like chicken pox, asthma, fever, etc.
Children are prone to various infections. Most illnesses are caused by bacteria or viruses, and can be prevented by maintaining basic hygiene standards. Get to learn about the various types of illnesses that can bug a kid.
1. Chicken Pox
Symptoms of this highly infectious disease include red, itchy spots all over the body accompanied by mild fever as in flu. The spots turn into blisters with scabs, which eventually fall off. Getting this disease once often provides immunity for life. The earlier a child gets it, the milder the intensity. Applying calamine lotion can provide some relief, accompanied with paracetamol to bring down a fever.
2. Asthma
A large number of children suffer from asthma. It is a disease that causes the bronchi to clog up, leading to incessant coughing, difficulty in breathing and wheezing. It is aggravated by environmental allergens. It is difficult to prevent the disease, but an attack can be prevented by careful supervision and medication. Most children outgrow it over the course of time.
3. Common Cold and Flu
It is almost impossible to prevent cold and flu since it is caused by over 200 different viruses. It causes a runny nose, headache, sneezing, sore throat, fatigue and fever. Though it isn’t dangerous, it does cause the kids a huge amount of discomfort. It goes away within a week or ten days. All you can do is give your child the relief medication.
4. Whooping Cough
This is caused due to a bacterial infection and is characterized by fever, cough, and nasal discharge. The cough is often followed by wheezing and vomiting and can last up to three months. It is infectious, and children should be isolated till they complete the antibiotic dose.
5. Gastroenteritis
This is caused due to a digestive system infection. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain or nausea. It often causes immense dehydration, so it is important to ensure that your child drinks plenty of fluids.
6. Fifth Disease
This is one of the milder viral diseases. Tiny red flecks appear on the child’s cheek and later on spread to affect his arms, thighs, and buttocks. The red rash-like specks make it look like a child has been slapped, and hence it is also called the ‘slapped cheek’ syndrome. It is infectious, but it goes away on its own.
7. Hand Foot Mouth Disease
Just as the name suggests, the child develops blisters in the mouth and on his hands and feet. This is also an infectious, viral disease and might be accompanied with mild fever. The child will find it difficult to eat, so you will need to give him mashed foods and easy to swallow semi-solid food.
8. Scarlet Fever
It is characterised by mild fever, a sore throat and rough rash that begins from the armpits and the groin and spreads to the neck and torso. The child gets a rough pink tongue called ‘strawberry tongue’ due to skin peeling. It is passed on to the child due to infection from coughs and sneezes of another infected person.
Make sure your child is vaccinated against diseases like Chicken Pox and Whooping Cough. Practicing basic hygiene rules like washing hands frequently, especially before a meal, and covering the mouth while coughing can go a long way in keeping your child healthy and disease-free. Read more

A New Journey Called Motherhood - Breastfeeding and Other Initial Problems
I am a mother to a 3-year-old baby girl. It was relatively easier for me to bring her up because of the support from my in-laws and husband. So, for the first-time mommies out there, I suggest that you take all the help you can get since it will be easier for you and less stressful. As you will have to breastfeed your baby, match your sleeping patterns with that of your child's sleeping pattern. Cook, clean, and take care of the baby accordingly.
Initially, owing to the lack of breast milk production, I had to give cow's milk mixed with water to my baby. This was a major cause of stress for me as I felt that I was not a good or complete mother. I was not able to satisfy the basic need of my child. The paediatrician suggested that I should get adequate sleep, eat healthy and nutritious food, and drink at least 4 litres of water every day to start producing milk efficiently. And it did work. I started eating lots of greens, methi seeds laddoos, etc. All thanks to my mother. And slowly, I could see the difference in the quantity of milk I was producing.
Stress and less water intake are major reasons for lack or little milk production. However, it is the time when one should try to relax, enjoy time with the baby, and follow a proper nourishing diet to make sure that the baby is fed well. Post this problem, I dealt with another problem of returning to work after 4 months and leaving my baby in the care of my mother in law. After staying with the baby for so long and suddenly leaving the baby, resuming work was not easy. Initially, I started with 3 hours of work or half a day work, and gradually increased the working hours. As I was working with a consulting firm, it helped me. Again since the baby needs to be breastfed at least for initial 6 months, the problem I faced was resolved by buying a breast pump. I went for the manual one. I used to pump milk before leaving and this ensured that the baby was taken care of till the time I returned from work. My best advice to the new moms out there would be to learn, alter, or incorporate things in your life as you go along in your journey with your child. Every child is unique and so are their needs. What worked for me might work for some and might not work for some. So, create a routine that is comfortable for you and your baby.
Happy Motherhood!!
