Breathing Exercises during Pregnancy
An average human being can live without water for 3 days, without food for 3 weeks, but cannot live for more than 3 minutes without air. One of the most important things a pregnant woman can do is making sure she is effectively breathing for two.
So, what do you need to do if you are breathing for two? Breathe twice as fast? Let’s find out.

5 Effective Breathing Exercises
Breathing is very important during pregnancy; it ensures efficient removal of waste products as well as a plentiful supply of oxygen for both the mother and child. Effective breathing purifies and calms the nervous system and induces a feeling of pleasant well-being.
Pregnancy and childbirth are both situations that are helped by effective breathing. There are some breathing exercises that can be very beneficial during pregnancy both for you and your baby.
Before beginning any breathing exercises, make sure you have a yoga mat or a folded blanket to sit on. This can be substituted by a comfortable chair where you can rest your feet on the floor while exercising. Exercises where you hold your breath are not advised during pregnancy since they can restrict oxygen intake and compromise oxygen supply to the baby. It is advisable to wait around three hours after the main meal, or an hour or two after a light meal or snack to practise breathing exercises.
1. Breathing through Morning Sickness and Early Pregnancy Fatigue
Calm breathing exercises for pregnant ladies help immensely when you are suffering from morning sickness. It also helps with fatigue, muscle, and joint pain. Relax your body and sit on the ground, cross your feet and take your awareness away from the discomfort in your stomach and throat area. Be aware of the ground beneath you and the support it gives you as all the tension in your body melts away muscle by muscle, with each breath. Breathe deeply and rhythmically through your nose. Keep your attention on the sound and rhythm of your breath. Now try to slow down and deepen each breath. Be aware of the air filling and leaving your abdomen. After a couple of minutes, you will notice how much calmer you are. Take a power nap if you want and get ready to eat a healthy, sustaining meal.
2. Breathing from Your Stomach
Practise doing this by keeping an object on your abdomen as you lie relaxed on the floor. Focus on the object and on moving it up and down as you take in deep breaths. Count a number in your head, as you bring it up and the same number as you bring it down. Belly or diaphragmatic breathing is excellent for pregnancy since it can result in 1/3rd more oxygen being inhaled.
3. Breathing from the Chest
After around 5 minutes of belly breathing, start chest breathing. The rib cage and thoracic cavity expand to the sides, front and back for each inhalation and exhalation. Practise for as long as you are comfortable. Practise alternatively with stomach breathing.
4. Shallow Breathing
When done in between deep breathing practice, shallow breathing helps by giving a good boost to your lungs. Do this for a minute while you get ready for more deep breathing.
5. Cool your Body with Practices like Sheetali & Sheetkari Pranayama
Inhale through your mouth. Extend your tongue out of your mouth and roll it like a straw. Suck in cool air through this straw with a loud noise and exhale through your nose. Alternatively, bare your teeth and suck in air noisily through your mouth and exhale through your nose. Both these practices cool the body. Pregnant women need cooling because of the added metabolic activity and hormonal changes.
Breathing Techniques for Labour
Using breathing exercises during labour can help you manage the pain by helping you work through it. First, find a pattern that works for you, then work on practising your breathing. Practise regularly, many times a day. You can use these breathing patterns to get through daily irritations till they become deeply ingrained in you as a response to stress.
1. Slow Breathing
Slow breathing is the art of breathing through contractions when labour begins. The contractions can be intense, so it would be difficult for you to talk during this time. Practise slow breaths, counting to a number comfortable for you, and exhaling while being relaxed. Make your muscles limp when you exhale to help you relax.
2. Shallow, Faster Breaths
At the active phase of labour, you can shift to light breathing. You can do this in between contractions with faster, shallower breaths at around one breath per second. The inhalation should be quiet with clearly audible exhalation. Practise by visualizing a panting dog. Doing this for small intervals in between episodes of pain can help in pain management.
3. Expulsion Breathing
This is a practice where slow breathing is interspersed with exhalation, a sigh, and a blow. It is to be done when your cervix is dilated. Many inhalations - up to 5-6 shallow breaths - should be followed by one long sighing exhalation. Take a big breath, curl your body forward, and bear down, while holding your breath. Try to relax the pelvic floor while simultaneously bearing down.
Benefits of Breathing Exercise
Most situations in a pregnancy are helped largely by breathing practices. Some of the main benefits are:
1. Helps Deal with Morning Sickness
Staying curled up in bed, unable to keep anything down, can be a miserable experience. Try calm deep breathing. It will help you deal with the nausea.
2. Breathing to Fall into a Deep and Rejuvenating Sleep
Deep breathing with active visualization of images of your muscle groups relaxing can put your body in a state of relaxation. After this, one can imagine the healthy growth of both the mother and the child to help you fall into a happy sleep.
3. Breathing through Pain and Discomfort
Delivery pains can also be managed through deep breathing.
4. Breathing Through Times When You Think Your Pregnancy is in Trouble
Take 5 deep, slow breaths while you think of 5 symptoms which tell you that there is a reason for panic. If there is nothing – good, crisis averted. If there is something – breathing helps you rationalize the problem so that you can inform your doctor in a calm and coherent manner.
5. Breathing When People are Giving You Advice
You may be troubled with unwanted advice during pregnancy. Breathing exercises can help you deal with this. This needs to be done with a smile as you grit your teeth and think to yourself “I'm pregnant, not uneducated, or stupid, or ......” Whatever the reason, breathing helps.
Breathing is the essence of life yet we do it without being aware of it. Many forms of exercise such as yoga and karate understand the importance of breathing. It helps calm the mind and can even make excessive pain tolerable. While being pregnant, one can employ some of the listed breathing techniques to help with any pregnancy-related pain.

The pollution we are exposed to every day has caused our skin and hair to become dull, lifeless, and unhealthy. To add to that, the chemicals that are abundant in the products we use have made our hair and skin prone to more damage. How do we tackle this? By making our own cosmetics, of course!
Try These 6 Homemade Cosmetics for Healthy Hair and Skin

is a list of a few basic cosmetics we all use on a daily basis, and
the easy and doable ways to make them at home. These recipes are
completely chemcial-free, so using them regularly will most
definitely help restore the shine and health of your skin and hair.
Read on.
A word
of caution: some of these recipes require the use of fire, so we
suggest that you be extremely careful while trying them. Make sure to
follow proper fire safety rules in order to stay safe.
1.
Moisturiser
Making
this DIY moisturiser is easy and effective.
Ingredients:
1 tbsp aloe vera gel (natural or store bought) 7-10 drops of coconut oil 1 vitamin E capsule (or you can substitute this for about 1 tsp of almond oil) A container for storage
Directions:
Take the aloe vera gel and coconut oil in a bowl and mix thouroughly. Cut the vitamin E capsule and pour its contents in the mixture. You can use almond oil as a substitute. Mix the three ingredients properly and transfer them into a small storage container. Use whenever required. In case you want to make more, simply increase the proportion of ingredients.
2.
Kajal
This
recipe is perfect for those who can never leave their house without
kajal. Now, make your own chemical-free version of the same. However,
be careful during this because it involves fire and the vessels that
you’d be using will get extremely hot during the process. Keep
yourself safe from any burning.
Ingredients:
7-8
almonds
A
small earthern pot or diya
2
glasses (made of glass)
A
few drops of almond or castor oil
A
steel plate
A
spoon
Matches
for lighting
Small
container for storage
Directions:
Take the almonds and put them in the diya. Take a match and light all the almonds till they are completely on fire. Put the two glasses at a short distance from each other, and keep the diya with the burning almonds between them. Rest the steel plate on the glasses and make sure it hovers right above the diya. Try not to leave too much of a distance between the plate and the diya, as the soot is what we want for the kajal. Let the diya burn till it dies out. Let the plate cool for a couple of hours. Flip the plate once it is completely cool. The plate should have a lining of black soot. Take a few drops of almond or castor oil, put them on the soot, and scrape it off the plate. The soot mixed with the oil should look like a thick paste. Transfer the mixture into a small container. Add a little more almond or castor oil to adjust the thickness of the kajal. Let it sit for some time. Your kajal is ready. You can use it as a liner as well.
3. Lip
Balm
Another
staple in our purses is lip balm, as it helps us with dry and chapped
lips. Read to know how you can make your own natural lip balm using
simple ingredients.
Ingredients:
1
tbsp coconut oil
1
tbsp beeswax
A
few drops of essential oil of your choice (jasmine, lavendar,
peppermint)
A
small cut part of your lipstick (optional)
Directions:
Take coconut oil and beeswax in a bowl. Put the bowl over a pot of boiling water, and stir till the two melt. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for fragrance. Add the small piece of lipstick for tint. Store in a container and let solidify. Your lip balm is ready.
4.
Hair Mask (for Oily and Dry Hair)
Using a
hair mask at least once in two weeks is a great way to maintain the
health of your hair. Instead of spending a hefty amount of money on
parlour treatments, read on to see a great DIY trick for soft and
silky hair.
Ingredients:
1
egg white (for dry hair, use the whole egg)
3
tbsp curd
1
tsp lemon juice
2
tbsp coconut oil/almond oil
Directions:
Break an egg (just the white for oily hair, and whole for dry hair) in a bowl. Whisk. Add the curd and whisk till there are no lumps. Add the lemon juice and coconut/almond oil and mix to form a mixture. Make sure it’s not too runny. Apply from roots to the tips and keep for at least 2 hours. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
5. Shampoo
Ayurveda
has all the answers to our different ailments and problems, and yes,
there is a recipe to make chemical-free cosmetics too. Read on to
know how to make your own shampoo. Note that these ingredients are
available both in market and online.
Ingredients:
2
tbsp shikakai powder - for short hair (use more for longer hair)
1
tbsp reetha powder (adjust according to hair length)
1
tbsp amla powder (adjust according to hair length)
Water
Directions:
In
a bowl, mix the shikakai, amla, and reetha powder.
Add
water gradually and keep stirring the mixture to adjust the
consistency. The mixture should be like a paste and not watery.
Your
mixture is ready.
On reaching the desired consistency, use it exactly as a shampoo – wet your hair, and apply this mixture from root to tip and massage it in. The reetha powder in the mixture causes a lather.
An important thing to note: when applying this mixture on wet hair the first time, there is a chance that it may not lather. This simply means that there is a lot of dirt/oil in your scalp and hair, so continue massaging it in your hair and wash it off as usual. Keep applying and washing the mixture till you see lather. Once you do, it means your scalp and hair are clean and fresh.
6.
Leave-in Conditioner/Hair Serum
A good
leave-in conditioner is supposed to help in keeping the hair soft and
frizz-free in the pollution and bad weather. Here is how you can make
an effective hair serum at home.
Ingredients:
2
tbsp coconut oil
1/2
cup aloe vera gel
1
tbsp almond oil
A
few drops of essential oil for fragrance
3/4th
cup water
Spray
bottle
Directions:
In a bowl or jar, put water and aloe vera gel. Mix thoroughly. Add the coconut and almond oils and mix. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil and mix. Transfer the mixture into a spray bottle, and use on wet/damp hair.
These were a few homemade recipes for your most commonly used cosmetics. Who said you need to pay a great amount of money on chemical procedures and products? You can find most of these ingredients in your home, and the others are present with minimal chemicals. You can make these cosmetics at home for healthy and glowing hair and skin. What to Do When You Are Tired of Saying No To Your Baby
Your baby is now over 12 months and you are certainly experiencing some changes. These changes may be so new and unexpected that they may test your patience. This age brings with it independence in different areas like walking, grabbing onto things and exploring the world around your little one. This sense of independence will drive him to explore the whole household or anywhere else you may take him. Some instances will be a bit difficult to handle, like your baby pulling down the table cloth and curtains. Your 1 year old might even empty powder bottles and pull down all the books from the shelf. The thought of it is making you cringe, isn't it? When no amount of “Nos” work and you're nearly pulling your hair out, what do you do?
One thing that you as a parent should understand is that your baby at 1.5-2 years will want to explore things more than his capability. Your parenting, then, should involve patience and innovative ways that will stop your child from doing something that is not right or safe without screaming at him. Your little one is innocent and naive and doesn’t understand the boundaries of what is safe or not, appropriate or not; teaching him is your job.
There are more ways to say “No” than actually saying “No”. Here are some ways you could try.
1. Distraction
Children often have a short attention span, making it easy to distract them. Distraction will help move your child away from anything you do not want him to do. The moment you observe that your little one is up to something mischievous, get him out of there by luring into some favorite toy. The curiosity of your child can be sometimes dangerous and distraction will surely help. Firm “Nos” tend to make children rebel or do wrong things on the sly.
2. Falling to Learn
Let your baby learn from mistakes. Needless to say that you need to keep a close watch on the safety of your baby but a few falls to let him learn aren't so bad. Let your child stumble upon a thing and fall. Once a baby knows that certain things may lead to pain, he will steer clear of them on his own. Be there to comfort him when he falls, of course!
3. Safe Arena
Rather saying a harsh “no” to everything unsafe, why not make your house a bit safer for your child? This is a much cleaner approach. Your baby will not be exposed to any kinds of unsafe activities. Hiding all sharp objects and covering open switch boards are some examples.
4. Non-verbal Language
Why not teach your baby to understand “No” through signs? This can be a change in the tone of your voice or a certain stare at your baby. Your little one will understand that you are not happy and should stop immediately. This approach will help you big time at social gatherings or anywhere outdoors where you'd rather not yell at your child.
You as a parent should remember is that it is rather a high expectation from your baby to say that he is sorry at this age. Understanding the world from a child’s point of view is crucial at all times. A “No” to everything will deprive your child from learning a lot of things. Clearly define the situations where a “no” will help and where it will not. The best thing to do will be to lead by example. Be gentle and kind at all times even when you're being firm about what is wrong. Your baby trusts and loves you and as long as he feels safe, disciplining him will not be as stressful as it could be. Happy Mommying! Read more

The Strong Bond I Share with My Sister
"It's okay..even if you are getting a better college, you should be taking admission in the same college in which your sister is studying. I don't want you to face any issues in a new college .", said my father in a strong voice, that no one could oppose to.
The bags were packed and I reached the hostel. My elder sister whom I called 'Dii', was waiting for me. She introduced me to a few of her colleagues and my seniors too. I felt a homely environment both in the hostel as well as college. Being the sister of a senior, no one ever dared to rag or bully me. I felt more confident than my other friends did. Studies also went on fine. After 2 years, she passed out from the college and went to another city for work.
After 2 more years, I also got a job in the same city and the same MNC in which she was working already. So, was this my good fortune. I was just elated and happy again ?. And our parents also didn't think twice before letting me join this job. So, we were together again.
The journey of life then took her to marriage and then kids and same followed with me too. However, this journey is not at all easy. It's full of ups and downs. It's almost a roller coaster. But the support that I have always got from my sister cannot be mentioned in words.
Each and every decision that I took in my life had been always influenced by her in some or the other way. When I feel I am facing a situation that I am not meant for, I assume she is in my place and think what she would do if this had happened to her. Yes, it becomes easy, of course, and sorted out ?. She has been a pillar of strength in all odds of my life.
Today, I am a mom of two and she is too. We stay in different cities. We talk often. Many things we speak about cannot be told even to parents, but can only be shared with your trustworthy sibling.
I remember how we were entirely opposite in likes and dislikes in our childhood. How we fought for the smallest and most silly things. I always felt that Papa loves her more and she always felt that Mummy loves me more. I think we still have this common issue ??. But it doesn't matter, yeah !!
What matters most is the love, the eternal and perennial support for each other whenever needed.
I wish our children also share a similar bond of love and affection forever.
Lots of love to my sister.
Dear readers, I am sure you would also have such a loving sister/brother, do share your thoughts on this blog. Thank you.
