Anterior Placenta During Pregnancy
The placenta develops in the first weeks of pregnancy. This flat, pancake-like organ is attached to the uterine wall and provides the developing baby with the oxygen and nutrients it needs, while also removing waste products via the umbilical cord. The placement of this organ can be at the front, back, or sides of the uterus, depending on where the egg gets fertilised. An anterior placenta pregnancy is when the placenta gets placed along the front of the uterus.
What is Anterior Placenta?
The fertilised egg, which will grow to become your baby, travels along the fallopian tube and embeds itself along the uterine wall. The placenta forms wherever this egg is embedded, which can be at the top, sides or in the front and back wall of the uterus. When the egg embeds itself along the front wall of the uterus, it forms an anterior placenta. You will know if you have an anterior placenta pregnancy during the ultrasound scan performed around the 20th week of the pregnancy. An anterior placenta baby is just as safe as any other baby, as its development is not impacted in any way. An anterior placenta pregnancy does the job of nourishing your foetus.
Is Having an Anterior Placenta Considered a Problem?
All positions along the uterine wall are normal sites for the development of the placenta. Placental health and the development of the baby do not depend on its placement. Therefore, it is not a problem to have an anterior placenta.
In cases where foetal movements are not felt, even at the 23rd week, going for a foetal health assessment can be reassuring for mothers.
Despite its location close to the surface of your abdomen, an anterior placenta does not pose any additional dangers to the health of the foetus. This is because there are many layers - the thick uterine wall, abdominal muscles, and fat that insulate it from the exterior world.
Birth complications caused by an anterior placenta are few. It is only when the placenta is placed low on the uterine wall that birth complications may occur.
The placenta travels over the course of pregnancy and it is possible that a low-lying placenta will move into the upper part of the uterus and cause no complications by the time of delivery.
However, if the anterior placenta is lying very low in the uterus at the time of delivery, it might partly or completely block off the cervix. This would make a caesarean section necessary. This condition, called placenta previa, is a rare condition.
What Are the Symptoms of an Anterior Placenta?
An anterior placenta has no specific symptoms; it is only detected by the absence of a certain symptom. The doctor may suspect an anterior placenta if a handheld doppler will take a little longer to find the foetal heartbeat or the mother feels no movement by the 23rd week. A foetal assessment and ultrasound are a good idea in this case.
Complications in Pregnancy Due to an Anterior Placenta
An anterior placenta does not in general present any complications during gestation. However, it might seem vulnerable and prone to complications because of its position. This is the exception, rather than the rule. The placenta, being a vascular and blood-rich organ, means that any tearing, rupture, cutting or needling poses the risk of excess bleeding. Some of the anterior birth complications are:
An anterior placenta can pose complications during delivery if a caesarean section is required. The anterior placement could make incision placement more complicated or may result in more bleeding during the delivery.
Complications are faced during needle positioning during amniocentesis. This includes risks of seeding, bleeding, and tears in the membrane.
An anterior low-lying placenta has a chance of complications like placenta previa. This may partly or completely block off the cervix, necessitating a caesarean delivery.
Placenta accreta is a complication faced when the anterior placenta grows over the site of the old caesarean section scar and the placenta grows into, and through, the wall of your uterus.
Ultrasound and MRI scans can be used to diagnose all these conditions well ahead of delivery to make sure that plans for a safe caesarean birth can be made.
Is C Section the Only Birth Option?
If one has an anterior placenta, caesarean is not the only option while giving birth. If the vaginal opening is not covered, those having an anterior placenta have a good chance of giving birth normally.
Placental Grading
The placenta goes through a process of calcification and maturing over the term of pregnancy. It develops calcium deposits and some parts begin to die, only to be replaced with fibrous tissue. This calcification is the basis of grading of the placenta, with:
Grade 0
This is from inception in early pregnancy.
Grade I
This is at around 31 to 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Grade II
This is at around 36 to 37 weeks of pregnancy.
Grade III
This is at around 38 weeks of pregnancy; not before 37 weeks.
At grade III, the placenta is severely calcified. This calcification is considered a normal part of pregnancy, and not a source of concern.
Care needs to be taken in cases of premature calcification with pre-existing conditions like placenta previa, diabetes, high blood pressure or severe anaemia. This is because research indicates that if placental calcification occurs before the 32nd week of pregnancy, the baby may have a low birth weight.
Complications due to placental calcification are not common, and in most cases, calcification does not affect the development of the foetus.
Factors That Cause Placental Complications
An anterior placenta is not in itself a cause of complication. Complications occur only when it combines with additional conditions like an anterior low-lying placenta, placenta previa or a placental abruption. In all these cases, complications occur if a C – section is indicated or if the placenta gets detached from the wall of the womb.

Without moving your head, movev your eyes to focus on the left and right thumb alternately.
Repeat 10 to 20 times.
Shift your focus to breathing.
Breathing Pattern:
Inhale while looking straight.
Exhale while looking sideways.
4. Rotating Eyes
This is another exercise that is good for your eyes.
How To Do:
Keep your legs straight in front of your body.
Put your left palm on your left knee.
Keeping your elbow straight, hold your right fist above your right knee and point your thumb upward.
Keep your head still direct your gaze at your right thumb. Focus.
Now make a circle with your thumb while keeping your elbow still.
Repeat this movement in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction five times.
Then repeat with your left thumb.
Breathing Pattern:
Make sure you inhale during the upper arc of the circle and exhale when performing the lower arc of the circle.
Once you are done, close your eyes and relax.
5. Front-to-Side Gaze
This exercise will help ease your eye pain.
How To Do:
Sit in a comfortable position and stretch your legs out.
Close your left fist and then hold it over your left knee. Direct your thumb upward.
Now, keep your head still as you shift your focus from a point directly in front of you to your left thumb.
Repeat the exercise with your right thumb.
Close your eyes and let them relax.
Breathing Pattern:
Inhale as you focus on a point in front of you.
Exhale as you direct your gaze at your left thumb.
Repeat 10 times, with each thumb.
6. Up-to-Down Gaze
The up-to-down gaze is a great way to relax stressed eyes.
How To Do:
Sit with your legs stretched in front of your body.
Place your fists on the knees with the thumbs pointing upward.
Keeping the arm straight, slowly raise your right fist.
Follow the thumb with your eyes.
Then, gradually follow the movement of your right thumb as you bring it down.
Repeat with the left thumb.
Practise five times with each thumb.
Breathing Pattern:
Inhale while looking upward.
Exhale while looking downward.
7. Tip of the Nose Focus
Focusing at the tip of your nose can help you concentrate.
How To Do:
Sit down with your legs crossed.
Raise your right arm and bring it in front of your nose.
Your right fist should be closed and your thumb should be pointing upward.
Focus on the tip of your thumb.
Now, bend your arm and bring the thumb to the tip of your nose.
Let your eyes follow this movement.
Focus for some time on the tip of your thumb and take it back to the original position.
Repeat this exercise five times.
Breathing Pattern:
Breathe in as you bring the thumb to the tip of your nose.
Exhale as you move your arm away from your nose.
8. Near and Distant Viewing
This is a great exercise you can do at work when you've been looking at the computer for too long.
How To Do:
Sit down or stand in front of a window with a clear view of the horizon. Keep your hands by your side. Gaze at the horizon for 5-10 seconds.
Then, concentrate at the tip of your nose for 5-10 seconds.
Practice this exercise 10-15 times.
Breathing Pattern:
Inhale while you're looking at a point which is far away. (Distant viewing)
Exhale while you bring your gaze to the tip of your nose. (Near viewing)
Once you have completed any of the above exercises, lie down in Shavasana for 10-15 minutes with your eyes closed. You can just close your eyes if lying down is not possible.

I still remember the horrible pain which stopped me from holding my 1-day-old baby. After a caesarean delivery, I was feeling so weak and withered. I was super excited to hold my bundle of joy but I couldn't and I had to console myself by just seeing her lying beside me. The very first day I tried to breastfeed her, I felt so much pain and my milk was not coming out. Once again, I could not feed and feel my baby. She was fed formula milk until I could feed her.
It was my husband who pacified me and managed to feed our baby; when my girl cried, he got up, held her in his arms and made her sleep, although my husband sleeps like a baby. During pregnancy, I used to puke during the night twice or thrice but I don't remember a day when he would wake up to help me. And now, he woke up whenever my girl made a little move. He stayed at the hospital with me without a single thought.
Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital and taken to my home. I took a bath and lay down on the bed, my girl sleeping alongside me. My husband came with a tray full of fruits and gruel and served me. He made sure of every thing that needed to be taken care of. When my girl peed and pooped, he changed her nappy; although we were in a joint family, he took the entire responsibility as he used to say, "This baby is mine too and I am her father how can I miss this opportunity to attach my baby with me". Those 7 days after my delivery, whenever my girl woke up in the middle of the night for 3-4 hours, my husband also woke up with her and walked around the room holding her. He made me take complete rest as my stitches were so fresh and I was prescribed not to lift anything heavy for 7-8 days, not even my baby, except for when I would be feeding her.
He consumed his leaves to stay with us for almost 2 months. Those days were the most crucial days where I saw the other side of my hubby who is caring and understanding, full of love and sympathy, and takes the full responsibility to look after our baby. I certainly say that he is my backbone. Even though I could not stand straight properly, he aided me emotionally and physically. I guess, the word 'soulmate' definitely made for him.

A. A lot of times normal delivery is actually seen in these cases also if the doctor is quick and the child cooperate then yes normal delivery is very much possible but some doctors don’t take a chance with the health of your child and so they normally suggest C-section so let’s see what’s your situation by the end when you are into your labour
