Is It Safe to Give Barley to Your Baby?
Barley is considered a good food for babies as it is filling and has plenty of nutritive properties. However, owing to the presence of gluten (a kind of protein), it is not advisable to make barley the first food for your baby. This is because there has been evidence to suggest that it can compromise the baby’s immune system as it increases the risk of Celiac disease (an autoimmune disease triggered by gluten). It is also not recommended for babies who are allergic to wheat as there is a chance of a link between wheat allergy and barley allergy.
When Can Your Baby Start Eating Barley?
It is recommended that babies be started on a barley-based diet only after they are at least seven or eight months old. Follow the three-day rule as you do with all new foods. This means, wait for three days after introducing it to assess if your baby displays any signs of allergy, and do not introduce any other new foods in these three days.
Barley is a versatile food item and you can make it smooth or chunky according to your child’s preferences. But it is best to start off with a little quantity of smooth barley cereal.
Benefits of Barley
Babies have small stomachs and can eat only very little amounts of food at a time. Thus, it is essential that you make every meal of your baby a nutritional one. Barley is one super food that can pack a nutritious punch at meal times. This is one reason why barley water for babies has been a time-tested favourite.
Improve Digestion:
A rich source of dietary fibre, barley can help stimulate digestion and regulate your child’s bowel movements. A healthy gut means a healthy baby.
Strong Bones:
The presence of a good amount of phosphorous in barley can help strengthen your baby’s bones. After calcium, phosphorous is what our bones are made of.
Boost Iron Absorption:
Barley contains a significant amount of copper which promotes absorption of iron in the blood. There is no point in feeding your baby iron-rich food if it is not being absorbed properly.
Strengthen the Liver:
Studies indicate that including barley in the diet on a regular basis has been useful in safeguarding the liver from damage by reducing the excess production of bile acids.
Anti-fungal Properties:
Barley contains a variety of biochemicals which are known for their anti-fungal properties.
How to Choose and Store Barley for Infant Food
Hulled and pearled barley are the best choices for storing and cooking purposes. Hulled barley contains more nutrients but the pearled ones are easier to cook. Both varieties are ideal for use in soups, stews, and broths wherein they fluff up to a much bigger size. Milled or ground barley is another option.
Pearled barley can be stored for many months if placed in a cool and dry place. If the barley is packaged, it will likely have a use by date for reference. Milled barley is best stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Irrespective of the type of barley you use, it is best to buy in small quantities to prevent spoilage and wastage.
How to Cook Barley Cereal?
If you buy pre-packed barley, there are likely to be cooking instructions provided. Around one cup of uncooked barley is likely to turn into three to four cups of cooked barley!
Take about two tablespoons of barley cereal and an adequate amount of water in a bowl and mix the two till all the lumps are gone. Then cook this over a low flame for about 15 to 20 minutes or in a microwave till it is well done. You can then add some formula or breastmilk to make a thin paste before feeding it to baby. You can also add pureed fruit to this cereal for some variety in flavour and natural sweetness.

Things to Remember
Here are a few things to remember when buying and cooking barley:
Babies cannot digest whole barley so avoid buying it
Store pearled barley in an air-tight container. You may even refrigerate it.
Before consumption, check stored barley for freshness
Start by buying small quantities
Barley needs to be cooked well so that the baby does not get an upset tummy. Also, remember to feed only small portions of barley to your baby. Feeding an excessive amount can lead to bloating as barley contains a high amount of fibre.

Foods for Healthy Hair - Restore Strength and Quality to Your Locks
All women desire long, shiny hair. We do everything in our power to get beautiful locks. We try various shampoos, hair oils, serums, hair masks - almost everything to strengthen our hair. But don't focus on our diet, do we now? A secret to healthy hair is a good diet. If you want to restore the shine in your hair and bring back the bounce in it, it's time you make diet alterations. Read this post to know about the foods that are good for hair roots and your scalp.
What Foods Should You Eat for Strong and Healthy Hair?
A healthy and nutritious diet is of vital importance for your body, but it is equally good for your hair. In today’s scenario where we expose our hair to pollution and chemicals, the hair loses its natural lustre and texture. To help your hair regain and radiate its lost strength and vitality, here are some foods for healthy hair growth:
1. Eggs
Have you ever noticed that most hair care products contain egg proteins in them? Our hair is mainly made up of protein and keratin. Hence a diet that includes ample protein is a sure-shot way to healthy and strong hair, and eggs are just a great way of achieving that. Eggs also contain great amounts of Vitamin B12, which seeps deep into the hair roots and nourishes and repair the hair.
2. Red Meat
Red meat is a great option for maintaining the health of the hair. It is loaded with iron, which easily penetrates deep into the hair follicles and helps in improving the hair texture. Iron is also vital for aiding the absorption of other vital nutrients by the hair follicles. Red meat, which contains sulphur, decreases inflammation and improves blood circulation, thereby protecting the hair from falling.
3. Salmon
If you love to eat fish, including salmon in your diet is an excellent way of improving your hair health. Salmon is a great source of Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids cannot be produced in our body, and thus we require other sources to provide us with this nutrient. The omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial for our hair scalp as it helps in hydrating the hair shaft and for nourishing the hair too.
4. Oysters
Oysters are powder-packed with the goodness of various vital nutrients, which are essential to maintaining healthy hair. Being a rich source of protein and iron, oysters are an apt food option to maintain healthy tresses. Also, these are loaded with zinc. Lack of zinc in the body may lead to hair troubles too; therefore, include oysters in your diet.
5. Cottage Cheese
Cottage cheese is one of the widely consumed dairy products in India. This versatile product can be added in main course dishes, desserts, soups, salads and other culinary preparations too. It is loaded with the goodness of calcium and protein, which can help in dealing with your hair issues. Casein and whey protein prove to be beneficial for your hair too.
6. Coriander
Add this fragrant green herb in your diet if you are facing hair thinning or hair fall issues. Eating coriander on a regular basis can help you get rid of toxins from your body. An excess toxin in the body may make it difficult for the nutrients to get transported to the scalp. Lack of nutrients may thus lead to dry and lifeless hair, which may cause other hair problems. Therefore, to flush out the toxins from your body and to get healthy locks, sprinkle chopped coriander to all the dishes you make.
7. Flax Seeds
The crunchy and nutty flavour of flax seeds can instantly enhance the flavour of any dish, and these highly nutritious seeds are great for your hair. Being a rich source of iron and omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseeds are a great addition to your diet if you want your hair to grow faster. Eating flax seeds can also improve your scalp health. You may eat raw flax seeds or include it in your food in the form of oil.
8. Poultry
Include more poultry in your diet to make your hair stronger and thicker. The presence of high amounts of protein, zinc, iron, and vitamin B are some of the essential vitamins and minerals that work wonders for your hair. More quantity of protein in your diet helps your hair too because protein acts as the building blocks for our hair.
9. Asparagus
Asparagus is a wonder food that contains Vitamins A and C. It also contains folic acid, a part of vitamin B, which aids the absorption of protein and helps the hair grow faster and stronger. Presence of Vitamin E and silicon help in hair growth and also helps in maintaining the overall health of the hair. Include just a bowl of this nutritious food in your diet and get thicker, shinier, and healthier locks in no time.
10. Milk
Milk is loaded with calcium and is an abundant source of protein. Together both these nutrients help in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. Include a glass of milk (preferably cow’s milk) in your diet and get bouncy and flowy tresses that everyone will adore.
11. Citrus Fruits
Oranges, sweet lime, and other such citrus fruits are loaded with lots of Vitamin C, which is excellent for the hair as it helps in the production of collagen. If you have always desired shiny, bouncy and nourished hair, add more and more citrus fruits to your diet and see your dream come true.
12. Broccoli
Broccoli has gained quite some popularity in our country because of the immense health benefits it offers. It can improve blood circulation to the scalp and add extra shine and lustre to your hair. Broccoli contains good amounts of Vitamins C and A - both these vitamins prove to be vital if you wish to have a beautiful mane.
13. Avocados
To stimulate your hair growth and maintain a healthy scalp include avocados in your diet. Avocados are natural hair moisturisers because they contain monosaturated fats, which help in rendering natural moisture and shine to your tresses. They are aptly called the food for hair as they help your hair to grow at a faster pace.
14. Tomatoes
The red and juicy tomatoes are one of the best foods for hair. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is a type of an antioxidant. Lycopene helps in the maintenance of collagen in our body, which further helps in protecting the hair from damage and keeping it healthy and shiny.
15. Mangoes
If you relish juicy and sweet ripe mangoes, then you can simply forget your hair related worries. Because mangoes are great food for your locks. Mangoes contain beta-carotene, vitamin E, and other essential nutrients that help in circulating more oxygen to the scalp and improve blood circulation.
16. Legumes
Foods such as kidney beans, chickpeas, peanuts and other such foods are great for the hair. This food group is filled with natural moisturising agents that are helpful in providing natural shine and gloss to the hair. They also contain loads of protein, which is vital for hair and scalp health.
17. Green Vegetables
Green vegetables offer abundant health benefits. Most green vegetables contain Vitamin A and Vitamin C, and iron and selenium in good amounts. All these nutrients are good for the hair. Try and eat veggies to derive maximum benefits for your hair.
18. Nuts and Dried Fruits
If you are battling with hair problems, nuts and dried fruits like almonds, walnuts, figs, dates etc. are some options that should become a part of your daily diet. If eaten on a regular basis, they help in strengthening your hair and promoting blood circulation.
19. Oats
Oats help in preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth. The potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous content in them make the hair thicker and shinier.
20. Guava
Guava is loaded with Vitamin C, which helps in collagen production. This helps in hair growth. Lack of Vitamin C can make your hair lose its shine and make them brittle too. However, by adding guavas to your diet, you can get shiny and healthy hair.
What Foods Are Not Good for Hair?
Where some foods should be added to your diet for good hair health, other foods should be strictly avoided. Here are some foods that are bad for your hair:
1. Sugar
More than required amounts of sugar can harm your hair. This is because increased amounts of sugar can hamper protein absorption, which can adversely affect your hair.
2. Artificial Sweeteners
Most artificial sweeteners contain aspartame, which is believed to increase hair fall or hair loss.
3. Sword Fish
Bigger fish like swordfish contains high amounts of mercury in them. High amounts of mercury in your blood may cause hair loss or other hair troubles.
4. Fast Food
Fast foods are loaded with fats and starch, which can clog the pores on your scalp, which can lead to hair loss and other hair related issues.
5. Alcohol
Alcohol hampers zinc absorption and also leads to dehydration. This may make your hair dry, brittle and more prone to breakage.
FAQ'S
Here are some frequently asked questions:
1. What Should We Eat to Reduce Hair Fall Immediately?
The main reason for hair fall is the lack of iron in the body. Include foods rich in iron such as spinach and other green leafy vegetables. Also, ensure that your diet consists of protein-rich foods like eggs, milk, legumes etc. because protein acts as building blocks for the hair.
2. Which Fruit Juice is Good for the Hair?
Kiwi and guava juice; apple and carrot juice; and strawberry and apple juice are some great fruit juice options for getting healthy hair because these are rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C, helps in promoting hair growth and also prevents hair loss.
Try to include as many foods as mentioned above in your diet to make your hair stronger and more beautiful. If you are allergic to any of the suggested foods, refrain from adding it to your diet and ask your doctor for the alternatives.

Does Your 1 Year Old Wave Bye-bye?
A 12-month-old baby waving hands is a joy to watch. However, is there something you can do to help children reach this milestone?
The little gestures and sounds a 1-year-old makes is a way of communication. Long before your baby learns to speak, she tries communicating with you through different gestures. One such milestone that she can reach quite early on is waving.
Hand Waving Milestone in Toddlers: When Is It Achieved?
Doctors believe that most babies start waving their hands by the time they turn 9 months old. However, it isn’t a perfect wave. In babies, it’s more akin to hand flapping. With time, they learn the right way to wave and the meaning of it as well.
What the Baby Waving Milestone Means?
Unlike adults who wave to bid goodbye or catch attention, there are other meanings for the same in babies. They may find it to be the easiest way to communicate their feelings. When your child waves, try to understand the meaning of the action. Hand-flapping is quite common in excited toddlers. This generally happens when they see something they like and want to draw your attention to it. It could also mean that they want to get their hands on it. Hand waving can be associated with irritation too. Gauging the intention behind the wave can give your toddler more confidence.
How to Teach Your Baby to Wave?
Whether your baby knows the real meaning of hand-waving, it’s important she tries to reach this milestone soon to build her communication skills. You can help by waving to her when she’s paying attention. Ask your partner and other members in the family to do the same. Repeat the gesture as often as possible and tell her that the wave means bidding goodbye. You can also hold her hand and say "Bye bye" while waving. Initially, the wave will be associated with a number of meanings, but as your child learns to clap and point, you’ll find that she uses the waving gesture for more specific things. Soon, your 1-year-old baby will learn to wave bye and with time, you won't have to look for too many interpretations.
Know Not to Hit the Panic Button
Most babies start waving hands or at least flap them by 9 months. Some who are 12 months old wave to bid goodbye. However, a toddler needn’t necessarily confirm to these stages. If you feel that your child seems to be lagging, don’t panic. Just make sure that you keep communicating with her and teach her the gesture. Effective communication is the best way to help babies reach this milestone faster.
If there doesn’t appear to be much progress in spite of your efforts, you might want to consult a doctor. He’ll take your child’s health into consideration and try to determine if there are underlying issues to be dealt with. Till then, continue to work with your baby patiently and lovingly.
Has your child reached the hand-waving milestone yet? How did you help her achieve it? Share your tips and help other mums! Read more

Breastfeeding Diet Tips for Vegetarians, Semi-Vegetarians & Vegans
A healthy start is what you look for when it comes to your little bundle of joy. Especially, while breastfeeding, you take great care to provide your child with the best possible nourishment. But your well-being is equally important. What your child gets as nourishment comes from you. The quality of your breast milk depends on your intake of protein, calories, vitamins, and minerals. And if that is of the right amount, then you do not have to fret over it. However, for optimum nutrition, based on your diet plan, you might need some supplements so that you or your child do not miss anything. The care you are going to take now in your diet is going to take care of you both.
Is Going on a Vegetarian Diet While Breastfeeding Safe?
Yes, it is. If you are thinking that you would not be getting enough nutrients, then think again. Even without having meat, you can have plenty of vegetables to provide you substantial nutrients.
Types of Vegetarian Diets
There are three types of vegetarian diets:
1. Lacto Vegetarian
A plant-based diet with lots of dairy products, but without eggs. Dairy products are a good source of Vitamin D, protein and calcium. With a considerable supply of Vitamin B12 and calories from dairy products, getting nutrition from such a diet would not be that difficult.
2. Ovo Vegetarian
It contains eggs and plants but dairy products are a strict no-no. Eggs are a good source of nutrients such as protein, calcium, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids, among many others.
3. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian
The best one, hands down. With eggs and dairy products to boost your body, you might not need any other supplements.
Tips to Consider When Following a Vegetarian Diet
Here are some tips to guide you through your diet.
Calories and proteins are a must. Eat accordingly.
Dairy products in your diet should be fortified with Vitamin D.
If egg suits you, then have one each day.
For extra vitamins or supplements, give your doctor a call.
Is Going on a Vegan Diet While Breastfeeding Safe?
A vegan diet is exclusively plant-based without meat, fish, eggs, or dairy products. That is why you should pay additional attention to your diet if you wish to follow a completely vegan diet while breastfeeding. You have to take special care about your calories and nutrients consumed in your vegan breastfeeding diet plan.
Tips to Consider When Following a Vegan Diet
Plant-based diets are extremely healthy but low on calories and nutrients. Supplements are required to fill in the gaps to make the 'vegan breastfeeding diet plan' a compelling one and having B12 in this diet is essential. Here are some tips that you will find useful while maintaining a strict vegan diet.
As plants are low in calories, make sure that you have plenty of alternatives or supplements in your vegan breastfeeding diet plan to complement the need.
Protein can be obtained from eating lentils, rice, nuts, beans, dark green vegetables and whole grain bread. Have them in plenty to meet your body's requirement.
B12 is a vitamin that can only be found in animal products. Preventing the deficiency of it is of utmost importance. Supplements are the best way to meet your body's requirement but make sure your doctor approves of it as well.
Plants laden with zinc are in plenty but your body responds better to animal products containing zinc. Hence, a lot of nuts, beans, grains, seeds, and leafy green vegetables should also be a part of your vegan breastfeeding diet plan. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are also good sources.
Dairy products are rich in calcium. But dark leafy vegetables can provide it to you as well. Beans, soy products, or fortified orange juice are also good sources. Dried figs are rich calcium carriers.
You can meet your iron requirements from mushrooms, tofu, nuts, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, iron-fortified bread, and cereal. Your diet plan should have a mix of foods containing high Vitamin C to make them more effective.
Fish is a good source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an Omega-3 essential fatty acid, which is an essential nutrient for your baby’s brain and eye development. However, it can't be part of a vegan breastfeeding diet plan. But flaxseed, hempseed, and walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which your body can transform into DHA but the amount may be too less.
Your iodine intake can be met with salt or seaweed and it can work well with your diet plan. It is needed for thyroid gland development.
Have you ever thought that a vegan breastfeeding diet plan can include sunlight? Well, it does, in a way! Your body gets a healthy dose of Vitamin D if you spend a few moments outside in the sun. But avoid the sunlight in excess; if the climate is too harsh, it is not advisable at all.
If you or your doctor feels like you're deficient in any of the nutrients mentioned above, you can always turn to supplements to meet the requirements.
Is Going on a Semi-Vegetarian or a Pescetarian Diet When Breastfeeding Safe?
A semi-vegetarian diet includes meat and animal products in it occasionally. If consumed in a balanced way and on a daily basis, a semi-vegetarian breastfeeding diet plan can assist you in leading a healthy life and in providing your baby with enough nutrition.
A pescetarian diet, on the other hand, does not contain any meat products. It's very similar to a vegetarian diet, but it includes fish. Fish is a very good source of protein, vitamin, minerals, and Omega-3 fatty acids, which can sufficiently take care of a new mother.
Tips to Consider While Following a Semi-Vegetarian or Pescetarian Diet
If you opt for a semi-vegetarian or pescetarian diet then you should follow these tips:
Variety is the spice of life. So, enjoy the vast array of dietary options to the fullest but maintain a healthy diet.
Proteins and calories are a must. Each morsel should contain healthy nutrients.
For pescetarians, well-cooked, low-mercury fish is a good choice. A healthy dose of shellfish on a weekly basis is a plus.
Vitamins and supplements always come in handy. But try to have nutrients from healthy foods than depending on supplements for your nutritional needs.
If you're following any of the mentioned diets, ensure that you take adequate measures to meet your nutritional requirements.
