Cervical Mucus and Ovulation
Ovulation is the process during which the ovary releases a mature egg into the uterus. Ovulation usually occurs around the middle of the menstrual cycle. If a woman has unprotected sexual intercourse within upto 72 hrs since ovulation, chances are high she will get pregnant.
Ovulation and CM are closely linked and can be used to improve chances of getting pregnant because the composition of cervical mucus keeps changing throughout the menstrual cycle. This means, by studying the CM being produced by her body, a woman can actually tell whether she is ovulating or not.
The menstrual cycle is primarily governed by 4 hormones – follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), oestrogen, and progesterone. In response to changing levels of these hormones, the woman's body enters different phases of the menstrual cycle.

2. Watery Cervical Mucus

3. Egg White Cervical Mucus (EWCM)

It has pretty much the same consistency, texture, and transparency as raw egg white. If you hold EWCM between your fingers and try to stretch it, it will extend for up to 2 inches without breaking.
EWCM is the most fertile kind of CM. This is your best chance at trying to conceive!
4. Sticky Cervical Mucus
Sticky cervical mucus is usually found a couple or three days after ovulation. It indicates that your body is changing and you are entering the luteal phase.
This would not be a good time to try to conceive.
How to Check Cervical Mucus?
There are several ways in which you can check the state of your CM.
1. Check your Toilet Paper
Usually a little bit of your mucus will get rubbed off on your toilet paper when you wipe yourself after peeing. Check for the kind of cervical mucus that your toilet paper catches. If there isn't enough, you can try again by inserting the tissue paper in your vagina a little deeper.
NOTE: Make sure your toilet paper is clean. Always store toilet paper in a clean and dry place, and keep it covered at all times to avoid catching an infection.
2. Check your Panty Liner
A lot of women use panty liners when they know they are going to be out of the house for long hours. A panty liner is a smaller, thinner, softer version of a sanitary napkin that absorbs unnecessary moisture and residual urine after you are done peeing, and keeps your panty dry. It also keeps you feeling fresh. Your CM can get deposited on your panty liner too at times. So you can simply take a closer look at it next time you pee.
3. Use a Surgical Swab
A surgical swab is like a cotton bud, but with a thicker 'bud' of cotton, and a longer stick. Usually surgical swabs are used by doctors and technicians to collect samples for inspection and diagnosis of diseases. They are easily available at a chemist. Make sure you buy a sterile swab. Inspect the sample just as explained above.
4. Insert a Clean Finger
A toilet paper may end up absorbing the water content from your CM and hence change its consistency. To avoid such a possibility. You may simple insert one or two fingers in your vagina, and 'swab' your cervix with your fingers.
Things like consistency, texture, and elasticity can be better assessed with your bare fingers than with tissue papers.
What Can Cause Changes to Cervical Mucus?
The composition, consistency, colour and at times even the smell of CM are all governed by the level of the four primary hormones that affect and control the menstrual cycle, viz. FSH, LH, oestrogen, and progesterone. A careful balance between the levels of these hormones will govern the amount and quality of CM produced during the menstrual cycle.
As explained previously, the quantity and type of CM produced by a your body depends on which stage of the menstrual cycle you are in. This is a natural and healthy process, and there is nothing to worry about. However, several other factors are known to affect the quality of CM. Let us try and understand what can cause changes to cervical mucus.
1. Contraceptives
Different contraceptives work in different ways. The most common ones – oral contraceptives – work by preventing ovulation. However, a lot of women may be unaware that contraceptives are also effective because they increase the amount and thickness of the cervical mucus being produced. Women on contraceptives typically produce thick mucus which acts as a barrier and prevents sperms from swimming through it and reaching the uterus.
2. Hormonal Imbalance
Many a time, due to reasons like weight gain, stress, etc. a woman might experience hormonal imbalance. There are a lot of things that go wrong because of hormonal imbalance in the body. One of the effects is a change in the CM.
3. Disease or Infection
An infection or a disease will greatly alter the body's microflora. For example, if a woman contracts a urinary-tract infection (UTI), the pH of the CM may change. 4. Stress

This CM plug closely resembles nasal mucus in composition: it contains immunoglobulins, and antimicrobial peptides (short protein chains) that are similar to those found in the nose. In appearance this CM is thick, cloudy, and sticky.
6. Breastfeeding
It is a known fact that lactation suppresses ovulation. No ovulation means low oestrogen and high progesterone levels. This condition mimics the few days right after your menses, and so your cervix will also be in the corresponding state: it will be dry, with very little to no CM.
7. Weight Changes
Not all, but some women report of changes in either the quantity, or quality, or both, of their CM when they go on a diet. While small changes may go unnoticed, extreme weight gain or loss, and extreme changes in your diet might produce more perceptible changes in your cervical mucus.
8. Travel
Changes in cervical mucus while travelling are usually in response to change in water conditions. If the quality of water used for bathing and drinking is poor, your body will quickly adapt to this and produce a CM that will be slightly more cloudy and sticky than normal, as a defence mechanism, to keep infections away.
Hostile Cervical Mucus
Hostile cervical mucus is the kind that either does not allow sperms to survive in it, or affects their motility, or both. Hostile mucus may be either too dry, thick, acidic, or may even contain antibodies that make it impossible for sperms to survive in it.
A woman whose body is producing hostile CM may or may not conceive during her lifetime. Understand that such a woman is different from a woman who is not ovulating. A woman who is facing the problem of hostile CM is still ovulating; her body is producing a healthy egg each month. However, the hostile CM is preventing sperms from reaching this mature egg. A hostile CM is hence also called 'infertile cervical mucus' sometimes.
Factors that Cause Hostile Cervical Mucus
For a woman whose body ordinarily produces healthy cervical mucus, production of hostile cervical mucus can be an indication of several health conditions.
One of the ways to understand if your body is producing hostile mucus is to correlate the kind of CM being produced to the stage of the menstrual cycle you are in; if the CM is different from the expected CM of that menstrual stage, chances are something is 'off' and you need to see a doctor. Usually, medication can correct the situation, and with counselling, you can be on your way to conception soon.
On the other hand, it has also been observed that some women naturally produce a CM that is not very conducive to conception. There could be several factors that give rise to such a situation: lifestyle, food habits, physiology, etc. It would be advisable for women to first consult a doctor and understand what their normal/regular CM is like, before trying to conceive.

Positive Discipline : How to Discipline a Child in a Way That Actually Works
Let’s play a quick word association game.
I will say one word, and you will say the first thing that comes to your mind when you read that word. Don’t think for long. Just say the first word that occurs to you. OK, here we go.
Sky.
Night.
Discipline.
Chances are, when you read “sky” the first word that came to your mind was “blue” or “high”.
When you read “night” you might think of the words “dark” or “day”.
What about “discipline”? What did you think of when you read that? In my case, I would probably have gone with “punishment” or “set right”.
The idea of discipline being synonymous with punishment is ingrained in our psyche. The first thing we think of when we hear the word “discipline” is usually something negative.
However, did you know that the word discipline originates from the Latin word ‘disciplina’ which means teaching, which in turn comes from ‘discipulus’ which literally translates to pupil?
Yet, I can bet that very few who tried the little exercise above would have thought “teach” when they first read the word “discipline”.
For whatever reason, over the years, discipline has gone from meaning “to teach” to “to punish”!
Today we explore “positive discipline” an idea that focuses on reverting things back to the roots – when children do something wrong, instead of punishing them, parents teach and guide them to set the behavior right.
So, how do we go back from “to punish” to “to teach”? In small baby steps, of course!
Here are a few tips to get started, and by following some of these (pick a subset of the ones that work for you), slowly we can change our perspective about “discipline”
1. The core of positive discipline: There are no bad kids, just bad behavior.
Think about that for a minute and you will realize how true the statement is. This is the basic premise of the positive discipline concept. Once we as parents recognize that inherently our kids are not bad, they are just behaving badly, the rest of it will slowly fall in place.
For instance, suppose your child hits another child. The first thing you feel is probably embarrassment and shame, followed closely by a fear that your child may have a “mean” streak. If you go with that feeling and call your child a “bad girl” or “naughty boy” you reinforce the negative image of your child both in your own mind and in your child’s.
Your child may just be hungry/sleepy/tired or any of the hundred different stress triggers that may have made her act out. In other words, something in your child’s environment is influencing your child to behave badly. When we accept that it was just a behavior that was bad, and the child herself is fine. For instance, instead of screaming, “Why did you do that? I don’t understand how you can be so mean sometimes” you will be in a much better situation to say “That wasn’t the best behavior – we do not hit our friends”.
At this point, I have to admit, I have a pretty strong-willed child and this will likely just get a “back answer” from her (or the water works, if she is already feeling guilty about it), but in her mind (and my own), I have planted the seed that she is not bad, it was just bad behavior, and it becomes easy for both of us to deal with it positively using one of the other techniques below.
2. Instead of pointing out what the child did wrong, show the child how to set things right
Building on the example above, let’s consider the best case situation first where you catch your child before she actually hits. However, instead of saying “Don’t hit” or “NO hitting” try saying “Use your words” or “Ask nicely”. When you say “Don’t hit” it does not give the child any information of what she should be doing instead. Without that knowledge, she may just end up going with her original plan to hit or she may choose to go with some other option which is equally bad – like shoving the other kid.
Now, on the other hand, if you catch the child after the incident, convey that what she did was wrong and give her an “out”. For example, you could say “That was not a good choice, we don’t hit our friends. Do you want to say sorry and make Kaylee feel better?” and if your child is not ready to say sorry yet (mine usually needs some time), you can continue with “Until we are ready to say sorry, let’s sit here and read a book” (This is sometimes also referred to as).
3. Be kind but firm; show empathy and respect
Now, in her mind, what she did was right and justified. It can be very frustrating when she insists on some wrong behavior as being right (mine is 5, and she can justify her actions until blue in her face with “She started it, she didn’t share the toy”). As parents, instead of arguing back, we just need to stay calm and repeat what we said in a kind manner but very firmly. For instance, repeat “Hitting hurts, we do not hit our friends” and “Yes, sharing is good, but we do not hit someone even if they don’t share” and different variants of it, over and over without losing temper or raising voice.
It also helps to show some empathy – for instance, “You really want the doll that she is playing with, but hitting is not the right choice.” Just by empathizing with your child that she really wants the doll, you can win half the battle.
4. Whenever possible, offer choices
After offering empathy, you can take it to the next level by offering her some choices. Choices give your child a sense of control. Not only is she not “bad”, instead of being “punished” she is given control… sometimes, that’s more than enough to snap a child out of a funk. This is one of the most common recommended by experts.
Simple choices like, “That was not nice, do you want to make Kaylee feel better by giving her a hug or by saying you are sorry?” or “Do you want to say sorry and continue playing with Kaylee or do you want to read a book with me until you calm down?” go a long way.
Remember to pick your choices carefully though, because once a choice is offered, and your child picks one, you need to honor it.
5. Treat mistakes as opportunities to learn
A child will often act out because she perceives it as the means to get to an end. When teach them not only that what they did is wrong but also empower them with alternatives, it will help them in the future from using it as a tool even when you are not around.
Try not to launch into a lecture though. If possible use examples and recollections from past behavior. “Do you remember last time when Tim hit you and how much it hurt? It made you mad/sad, right?” or “Remember when you fell off the chair and bumped your head? When you hit someone, it hurts the same way.” Read more

Most kids love paneer. So, if you want to make them something special for lunch, pack in some paneer dish. Here is a new way of serving them paneer with chapatis – make wraps out of it. For these Kadhai paneer wraps, we have cooked a delicious Kadhai paneer curry and have wrapped it inside a chapati, along with some sliced onions. There will be no leftovers in your kid’s lunch box - we can assure you of that.

Ingrediants
6 whole-wheat flour chapatti
200 g paneer block, cut into ½“cubes
1 onion cut in square chunks
1 small capsicum, chopped in square chunks
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 green chili, minced
½ tsp red chili powder
2 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
1” ginger piece, julienned
½ tsp garam masala
1 tbsp dried fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi)
Handful of chopped coriander leaves
2 tbsp oil
To Assemble
1 onion, thinly sliced
3 tbsp ketchup
3-4 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped
Method
Step 1
Heat a pan and dry roast coriander seeds and cumin seeds. Take them off heat and make a coarse powder of it in a pestle and mortar
Step 2
In the same pan, add oil. Add the ginger garlic paste, minced green chili and chopped onion. Sauté for a couple of minutes. Add the chopped capsicum and tomatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add the roasted spice powder, salt, red chili powder and stir. Add ¼ cup of water and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Step 3
Now add the paneer pieces and cook it till the paneer pieces are coated with the gravy. Add dried fenugreek leaves, garam masala and coriander leaves. Stir. Top it up with the julienned ginger.
Step 4
To assemble the wrap, apply the green chutney on the chapati. Place 3 tbsp of the Kadai paneer filling in the centre. Place some thinly sliced onions and chopped coriander leaves over it. Roll the sides into a tight roll.
Step 5
Pack them into aluminum foil and add them into your kid’s lunch box.
