Baby Lip Shaking - Causes, Complications, and Treatment
When you become parents, your life revolves around your baby. If anything happens to him, you immediately want to take him to a doctor. If you notice your baby's lip quivering, you will obviously wonder if the action is normal or if it requires doctor's attention. While any kind of tremors and jitters might raise alarms in your head, it is important to know why they exist in the first place.
What Does Lip Quivering Mean?
In certain situations, you might notice that your baby’s lower lip begins to tremble or quiver rhythmically. It might seem as if he is about to start crying, but that will not be the case. If this tends to repeat often over a few days, such a condition is termed as lip quivering in a baby.
Signs and Symptoms of Baby Lip Quivering
The signs and symptoms of lip quivering or lower jaw trembling in a baby will be evident from his behaviour. Those can also be accompanied by a few others, at times.
A slight tremor that exists primarily in the areas of the legs, chin, and lips, keeps occurring at a certain rhythm.
The tremors or quivering continues for a few seconds and then stops.
Such quivering exists primarily when the surrounding environment has changed its temperature, or the baby is hungry or irritated.
Reasons Why an Infant's Lower Lip Quivers
If your infant’s lower lip has been quivering incessantly, there is a good possibility of a medical reason being behind it.
1. Presence of Birth-related Defects
One of the reasons why a child's lower lip quivers without control is defects that might be present since birth. These usually cause the movements of the child to be jittery as well. These birth complications could range from an improper level of blood sugar in the body to a major calcium deficiency as well. In a few cases, if the supply of oxygen in the baby’s body has been cut off during birth, it could cause this condition to set in, too.
2. A Nervous System That is Yet to Develop Fully
While birth-related defects are a valid reason for the quivering lip, most cases end up being a case of the child’s nervous system struggling to catch up with progress. These shakes, jitters and quivers may not stay restricted only to the lip, and make their presence all over the body, including the jaws, hands, legs, and so on. All of these are a result of the nerve signals being sent erratically to various body parts, from a nervous system that doesn’t have the full capability yet. Most of the times, these symptoms fade away in a few months after birth.
How Trembling of Lips is Diagnosed in Infants
Doctors usually conduct a bunch of examinations in order to diagnose trembling lips in babies. The major step before delving further is to be able to separate a pathological tremor from an actual physical one. This will help in charting a path, depending on the possible cause of the tremor.
In most cases, doctors tend to bring in a neurological expert to diagnose the infant, especially if the quivering has existed for more than three months. He can then use various details, ranging from pregnancy complications, labour duration, and many others to form an opinion.
Tremors and quivering are all linked to the functioning of the nervous systems. Therefore, multiple tests can be conducted to determine the state of the brain, including blood tests of a particular kind, electrolyte examination, or cerebrospinal fluid tests, which take into account various interdependent factors as well.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) might be used to determine the physical structure of the brain. Neural sonography can also be opted.
Further diagnosis might require conducting a test of the nutritional presence in the blood vessels located in the head. These could be combined with an x-ray of the neck, as well as an EEG to compare neural signals.
Complications of Lip Quivering in Babies
Seeing a baby's jaw trembling will alarm you, of course. Most doctors will examine the baby right away and diagnose the issue. In most cases, if no anomalies are detected in the child, it is just a matter of time before your baby’s tremors disappear completely.
However, if the quivering is a result of a pathological problem, then there is a risk of further complications existing due to it. A child might suffer from perinatal encephalopathy, resulting in malfunctioning of the brain. At times, it could even cause hyperglycaemia or cerebral haemorrhage in worst cases.
Treatment Options for Baby Lip Trembling
While most conditions of a trembling lip in a child do tend to fade away a couple of months following the birth, there are some treatment options you can opt for, in case it continues even after three months or so.
1. Water-related Therapeutic Techniques
Some amount of soothing in the form of water can help calm down the quivering action of the child and allow him to relax. Such baths should be conducted on a daily basis and in an appropriate manner. The water used for these baths should not be too hot or too cold. Certain herbal oils can be used in hot bath water, primarily those derived from valerian root, lemon balm, or mint grass.
2. A Specific Medical Massage for Relaxation
Massages might seem to be too intense for an infant. However, there are certain medical massages that are administered to babies who are as young as even a month old. These are beneficial irrespective of any abnormalities in a child. Most of the techniques make use of a minor vibration, rubbing of various body parts, as well as kneading and stroking the muscles, allowing the internal organs and bodily processes to be stimulated in the right way.
3. Oxygen Therapy
Since the lack of oxygen during birth is one of the reasons for instilling the quiver in an infant, oxygen therapy is recommended for children combined with enough body rest. In medical terms, most of the conditions that result in tremors or jitters in the body, can all be tied down to a perinatal pathway within the nervous system. This displays such conditions in the presence of low levels of oxygen termed as hypoxia.
4. Replenishing the Deficiencies in the Body
At times, doctors might determine that the presence of certain deficiencies might be the reason why the quivers have set in a child’s body. In such a case, supplements might be prescribed for some major elements, such as magnesium, calcium, glucose, and so on. These will be infused intravenously for faster response, which helps in quick synthesis within the tissues of the nervous system. Similarly, it allows them to absorb oxygen easily as well.
5. Advanced Medical Techniques
In a few extreme cases, the presence of internal pressure within the cranium might be detected in the child. This can lead to severe seizures later on, as well. Therefore, it becomes necessary to administer certain corticosteroids to correct the problem as well as carry out punctures in the spinal cord for treatment. Medications meant to counter any convulsions might be used as well, along with other drugs that enhance blood flow to the brain and even make use of physical therapy.
When Does Newborn Lip Trembling Stop?
Lip trembling in a newborn baby tends to disappear after a couple of months or so. By then, the nervous system has matured enough for such symptoms to fade away fully.
How to Prevent Lip Quivering in Babies
In case a baby's lower jaw or lip is shaking repeatedly, it is best to hold him close to you and calm him down. Massaging and bathing can yield good results as well. Make sure the diet of the child is balanced properly and there are no deficiencies present.
Points to Remember
Remember to stay calm and keep your baby calm if you notice that his lip is quivering. Go ahead and touch the area that is trembling, which could even make it stop temporarily. Talk to other parents and figure out if they encountered something similar, too.
If you are trying to find out why a baby's bottom lip quivers, then you will have to take your baby to a doctor and after certain medical checkups, he may help you determine why this might be happening. However, you must know that quivering is pretty normal in most babies, and it will fade away in good time.

Your Baby This Week : 11 Month Week 3 Old
Your child understands more than he says, and he knows that everything around him has a name to it. Some of the 11-month-olds are ready to say those words, but they will file it away for future reference. Soon, you’ll be able to say, “Where’s the ball?” and he will show you. As you may have noticed, your baby is all about “testing” what he can do, and how things work. This is how the elderly, infants, and young children learn about the world around them. Babyproof (and, later, a child-proof your home), so that there is a “yes” environment in which to play, rather than one full of no-nos. If you find yourself saying “no” to a lot of things, your baby could be desensitized to it and begin to tune it out completely. Whenever possible, make an effort to redirect his attention to something more acceptable. Children learn through repetition and practice.

Rickets in Children
Rickets is a preventable disease of bones that is caused by the deficiency of vitamin D and calcium. It occurs in children only in their growing years and leads to softer, weaker bones that bend into abnormal shapes or fracture. Rickets can affect babies as young as three months and go all the way up to adolescence. With early treatment involving adequate supplementation of vitamin D and calcium, rickets can be treated effectively. If left untreated, rickets can cause physical disability that can be permanent.

What is Rickets?
Rickets is a deficiency disorder that results in weakening and deformation of bones in children. It is caused by the prolonged deficiency of vitamin D, which is necessary for the absorption of calcium by the body. Lowered levels of calcium either due to poor absorption or a lack of sufficient amounts in the diet cause the bones to become soft and weak. The bones take a slightly bowed shape and give the children a deformed appearance in the legs. Globally rickets is common in children between the ages of three and 18 months. Rickets in babies less than a year old is mostly caused by vitamin D deficiency.
Who is At the Risk of Getting Rickets?
Infants and children are at the highest risk of rickets. Children who come from poor family backgrounds suffering from malnutrition have a high risk. Children who are less exposed to sunlight can have a deficiency of vitamin D as sunlight is needed for its production. Those growing up as vegans have a zero intake of dairy products and get lesser calcium. A lack of both vitamin D and calcium gives rise to the highest risk of rickets in children. In sunny countries, rickets is caused more by a lack of calcium intake than due to low vitamin D levels. Other risk factors involve children who suffer from diseases that interfere with the absorption of vitamin D such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, cystic fibrosis and kidney related issues.
Causes & Risk Factors of Rickets in Children
Rickets is mainly caused by insufficient amounts of:
Vitamin D (either through diet or sunlight exposure)
Dietary calcium
Both vitamin D and calcium
Vitamin D is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. It is also found in foods such as oily fish and eggs. A deficiency of vitamin D stops the body from absorbing calcium and phosphorus. Calcium is mainly found in dairy products such as milk and is essential for children to develop strong bones.
There are several risk factors for getting rickets and include the following:
Age: Rickets broadly occurs between the ages of six and 36 months. This is a period of rapid growth in children and their bodies need a good supply of calcium and phosphates to build their bones.
Diet: Children raised as vegetarians or vegans have a greater risk of developing rickets as meat, eggs and dairy products contain ample amounts of calcium and much-needed nutrients. Children who have lactose intolerance or have a hard time digesting milk or dairy products are also at risk. Babies who are only breastfed also have a risk of developing rickets as breast milk lacks enough vitamin D to prevent rickets.
Skin colour: Children with darker skin have a natural barrier against sunlight in the form of melanin. This means their skins produce lesser vitamin D when exposed to the sun.
Geographic location: Exposure to sunlight is needed by our bodies to produce vitamin D and children living in latitudes with lesser sunlight are at a risk.
Hereditary: Hereditary rickets is one form of the disease that can be passed on through genes. Such children have kidneys that do not absorb phosphates well.
Rickets Signs and Symptoms in Kids
The symptoms of rickets include:
Tenderness or pain in the bones of the arms, legs, spine and the pelvis
Short stature and stunted growth
Weak bones that fracture easily
Muscle cramps and in severe rickets, seizures
Dental problems such as:
Delayed formation of teeth
Enamel erosion and holes
Defects in teeth
High number of cavities
Abscesses
Skeletal deformities such as:
Bowlegs; legs that look curved like a bow
Oddly shaped skull
Protruding breastbone
Oddly curved spine
Deformities in the pelvis
Bumps in the ribcage
Thickened ankles and wrists
What the Complications Might be
If left untreated, rickets can cause physical deformities and serious effects such as failure to grow, abnormally curved spine, deformities in the limbs and dental defects. The delay in teething is accompanied by weak tooth enamel and malformed teeth. In babies, it can lead to the delay in the closing of the anterior fontanelle which is the soft spot at the top of the baby’s skull. In severe rickets with very low levels of blood calcium, children can develop seizures. It is a medical emergency and should be treated immediately.
How is the Diagnosis Done
Rickets is diagnosed by a complete physical exam combined with the assessment of medical and nutritional history. In the physical exam, the doctor will gently press on the bones to look for tenderness and pain. Apparent signs of deformations in the limbs and skull are also made a note of. If the child doesn’t have severe symptoms such as tetany or seizures, X-rays of long bones and ribs are obtained. Laboratory testing for vitamin D, alkaline phosphate, electrolytes and the parathyroid hormone are conducted to check for their levels. If there is a match between those and X-rays revealing obvious deformities in the skeleton, rickets is confirmed. The laboratory tests also reveal different causes of rickets which can then be used for treatment.
Treatment for Rickets in Kids
Since most cases of rickets are caused by the deficiency of vitamin D and calcium, treatment involves increasing the child’s intake of vitamin D and calcium. The doctor determines how much of the two is needed based on the child’s age and cause of rickets.
Treatment can involve:
Intake of foods rich in vitamin D and calcium
Intake of vitamin D and calcium supplements
Vitamin D injections administered every year in case the child is unable to take supplements by mouth
Exposure to sun in the form of outdoor activities or sunbathing
When rickets is a complication of another medical condition, treating the underlying condition often resolves rickets.
Children with deformed bones or spine maybe advised corrective surgery and the use of braces and supports may be needed till the bones get stronger.
Children with genetic rickets would need a combination of a special form of vitamin D and phosphate supplements for treatment.
What to Expect After Treatment?
Regular follow up is needed to check for healthy levels of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood and body. X-rays will be done at regular intervals to check for bone growth and density. Treatment outcomes are excellent in children with nutritional rickets when diagnosed early. Adequate supplementation with vitamin D and calcium can start showing results in a matter of weeks to months. Bowing of the legs in some of the longer standing rickets cases can also resolve on their own without surgical intervention. However, in children with an advanced stage of rickets, some of the damage can be permanent.
How to Prevent Your Child From Getting Rickets?
Several preventive measures can be taken to ensure your child doesn’t get rickets. If the child spends enough time playing outside in the sun and eats nutritional food rich in vitamin D and calcium, it keeps rickets at bay. Few minutes of sunlight a day, few times a week is helpful in producing vitamin D. The daily requirement for both infants and adults is about 10 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin D a day. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consider taking the recommended 10mcg of vitamin D a day as a supplement to ensure the baby has enough. Also, children between 1 to 4 years old should be given a 10mcg vitamin D supplement on a daily basis.
When to Seek Medical Advice
When children show signs of rickets although they are given plenty of nutritious food rich in calcium and vitamin D, its time to seek medical advice. Genetic disorders and other illnesses can affect the absorption of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus leading to rickets. A different treatment approach is needed in these cases.
Rickets is an easily preventable disease with proper nutrition and supplementation. It can be avoided by getting enough sunshine every day and eating foods rich in vitamin D.

6 Nutritious Steamed Food Recipes That You Can Make for Your Family
Our nutritionists, doctors, and elders always tell us to follow a healthy lifestyle. We also know it well that we should eat nutritious food and give up junk food if we want to stay healthy and fit. Processed foods contain preservatives, sugars, and unhealthy calories, and eating home-cooked food is the best bet if we want to stay healthy, but eating steamed food can be healthier. Steaming food is the simplest way to cook food. There are several other benefits of eating steamed food which we have discussed in this article.
How is Steamed Food Beneficial for Your Health?
Steamed food has many health benefits which are listed below:
1. It Helps Lower Cholesterol Levels
Steaming foods like lamb and pork can remove their fat content. It is difficult to separate the fat from the meat by other methods of cooking like grilling, frying, or roasting. Eating steamed food, which is devoid of fats, means less calorie intake, which in turn can control your cholesterol levels. Also, since steaming does not require the use of oil, you have a healthier and lighter meal on the table. It is a wonderful idea to include steamed foods in your weight loss diet.
2. It Helps Preserve the Colour, Flavour, and Fibre
Steaming is a method of cooking which helps retain the original flavour, colour, and texture of the vegetable as closely as possible. What you get is the entire nutritive value of the vegetable along with its rich colour and texture. Adding spices to the water could lend some additional flavours too.
3. It Helps Retain Micronutrients
Conventional cooking methods tend to drain a vegetable of its vitamin and mineral content. Steaming ensures that biotin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, Vitamin C, B12, niacin, thiamine, and vitamin B are retained in the vegetable. Also, minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorous, and zinc remain intact when you steam the vegetables.
4. It is a Simple Way of Cooking
Steaming food by stacking layers over each other can help you save precious time in the kitchen. It is also much simpler because there isn’t a lot of preparation involved and you can get most of it done with a single heat source.
Tips and Tricks to Steam Your Food
Don't think that steamed food is boring and bland. You can add a little punch to your steamed food with a few handy tips:
1. Try the Classic Taste
Add a dash of olive oil, salt, and peppercorns in a pan and toss the veggies in it. Then steam in a steamer. Be sure to use extra virgin oil for a good flavour.
2. Use Herbs
You can add whole parsley, thyme, rosemary, basil, or lavender to the food before steaming. Remove them before serving the dish. Steaming chicken this way can make it absolutely flavoursome.
3. Sweet Tooth Cooking
To enhance the flavour of naturally sweet vegetables, you can add a bit of balsamic vinegar or red wine to the food before steaming. You could do this for steaming fish and meats too.
4. Make it Citrusy
Add a dash of lemon juice to your steamed food to get a unique flavour. You could use lemon slices while steaming vegetables to get the same effect too.
