10 Home Remedies for Jaundice in Newborns
Jaundice is very common among newborns. It occurs when the bilirubin level in the blood is high. Usually, jaundice in newborns is harmless. It easily gets cured on its own within a span of one to two weeks after the birth of the baby. But if the bilirubin level remains high, the baby should be hospitalized. There are some remedies that one can try to treat jaundice in newborns. However, one should consult a doctor before giving these to a baby.
Natural Ways to Treat Jaundice in Newborns
It is normal for a baby to be suffering from jaundice when he is born. There are several modes of treatment that you can try to treat jaundice in newborns. Below is a list of remedies that you can try to treat jaundice in newborns.
1. Breastfeed your baby frequently.
If your newborn baby has jaundice, feed him frequently. Breastfeeding your little one frequently will help eliminate the bilirubin from his bloodstream and flush it out through stool and urine. Babies with jaundice sleep a lot. If your baby has jaundice, he might sleep a lot too. So wake him up at regular intervals to feed him. In case you don't breastfeed him, give him two ounces of formula milk at each feed.
2. Use a Bili-blanket.
Using a bili-blanket is a convenient and inexpensive way of treating neonatal jaundice. It is a portable phototherapy device which is effective in treating some degrees of jaundice in newborns at home itself.
3. Make your little one bask in the sun.
If your baby has jaundice, keep him in the sunlight for 1-2 hours daily. However, see to it that the baby receives the slanting rays of the sun before 8 o'clock in the morning. The rays of the sun will help reduce the bilirubin content in the blood and cure jaundice.
4. Try the extract of Ziziphus Jujube.
Give 1 ml of Ziziphus jujuba fruit extract thrice a day to your newborn till his jaundice is fully cured. It will reduce the bilirubin content in the blood by flushing it out. However, consult a doctor before giving it to your baby.
5. Use supplements.
Newborn babies with jaundice should be fed more in comparison to babies who have no such health issues. In case breast milk is not enough for your bundle of joy, you can give him infant formula milk.
6. Give carrot and spinach juice a try.
Finely chop both the vegetables together and squeeze out the juice. Give a few drops of the juice to your baby after consulting with a doctor.
7. Give sugarcane juice.
The vital sugar in the sugarcane helps the liver to fight jaundice better. Therefore give a few spoons of the juice 3-4 times a day can treat jaundice in small children. However, do remember to extract the juice at home instead of getting it from street vendors.
8. Give wheatgrass juice.
A few drops of wheatgrass juice can be added to the formula milk and given to a baby suffering from jaundice. Wheatgrass juice also helps get rid of excess bilirubin from the liver. If your baby has jaundice, you can try this remedy. Even you can drink a glass of the wheatgrass juice as it will be passed on to your baby through your breast milk, which will ultimately benefit your baby.
9. Try the sun-lamp therapy.
Keep the baby under a special sun lamp. This is a home phototherapy method which can be tried if your baby's bilirubin level is continuously increasing.
10. Drink tomato juice.
Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene and are good for the blood. If tomato juice is consumed early in the morning, it can cure liver-related problems and help in curing jaundice. Since newborns cannot have tomato juice, mothers are recommended to drink it. The nutrients of tomato juice will reach the newborn's body through the mother's breastmilk and help him heal better.
These are some remedies that you can try for your newborn after consulting with your doctor. There are some herbal remedies for jaundice too, but they cannot be administered directly. So the mother can take herbal supplements like dandelion tea, basil tea, comfrey tea, etc., as they are high in antioxidants, which can help detoxify the baby's body.
Sometimes, a newborn may suffer from jaundice because of drinking the mother's breast milk. In such, a case, the mother should stop breastfeeding him.
Majority of the newborns are born with jaundice and it hardly requires any treatment. Within a week or two, jaundice gets cured on its own. For this kind of mild jaundice, you can take the help of home remedies (of course, after consulting a doctor). But if the bilirubin level keeps on increasing, you must immediately take your newborn to the doctor. There is no reason to worry if your little one gets it; however, it shouldn't be left untreated.

Douching during Pregnancy - Is It Safe?
There are many women who are unaware of the concept of douching. And with good reason. Douching is not usually undertaken because there doesn’t seem to be a necessity. While some women might do so to feel clean down there, they might begin to ask the question can douching while pregnant cause a miscarriage of their baby? Let us understand what douching is and whether there is a necessity for it or not.
What is Douching?
To understand what douching is, it is necessary to know what completely constitutes a vagina. The entire region that starts from the cervix inside the body, down to the opening outside, is termed as a vagina. It is made up of numerous muscles serving various functions and contains a number of bacteria and discharges that take care of its cleanliness. Douching is the procedure of using fluids made from a combination of baking soda and vinegar to clean the vagina. This is done by squirting this mixture inside using a bottle and a nozzle.
Is Douching Safe for Pregnant Women?
Vaginal douching during pregnancy is not recommended and is actually advised to not undertake at all. Unknown to us, there are a huge number of microorganisms and bacteria that are constantly working towards maintaining a healthy environment in the vaginal tract. These are also responsible for taking care of any harmful bacteria that might enter, thus carrying out an antibacterial action and preventing any infections. The various discharges that occur to make women wet, but these also make it difficult for external bodies to stick in the vagina, and rarely do smell or cause any irritation.
But when you douche, the chemicals of the fluid end up disrupting the pH balance present in the vagina, which is necessary for all these processes to continue and the good bacteria to thrive without any problems. In order to make the area smell better, using perfumes or other aromatic chemicals react adversely with the inner tissues, leading to further irritation. It could even open the doors for infection as well.
Harmful Effects Of Douching In Pregnancy
When pregnant women undertake douching to keep their vagina healthy, they are, in fact, causing a lot of harm to the area and making in unhealthy in various ways.
First off, douching can reduce the chances of you getting pregnant if you are attempting to conceive. All the natural processes and bacteria constitute an integral part of the reproductive system. Introducing any foreign elements into a system that is well-balanced and self-sustaining could cause an impact, which might even result in a failed conception as well.
Douching can result in pushing the bacteria that are ought to be in the vagina, deeper into the body. These then reach the fallopian tubes and ovaries and begin to infect them. A fertilized egg, in such a condition, could attach itself somewhere else instead of the uterus, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy. Such a condition is harmful to the woman and needs to be treated immediately.
In case of pregnancy already present, douching exposes the vaginal tract to a number of external factors, which might be responsible for triggering a premature delivery as well. Having a childbirth way before the full-term of pregnancy could result in the baby having numerous complications, or even be stillborn. Chances of exposing the uterus to infection, resulting in endometriosis, or the infection finding its way inside the amniotic sac, all increase due to douching.
Most women carry out douching more as a reason to feel clean psychologically since it doesn’t actually bring any biological benefits. One might opt for douching with water while pregnant, but that too isn’t fully safe since the water itself might not be absolutely clean and free of microbes. It is best to leave the vagina as is, and not indulge in it. Your pregnancy will continue unabated and you will have a healthy baby as well.

A Guide To Tubectomy (Tubal Ligation)
There are many methods of contraception available for both men and women. Some of these involve minor surgical procedures and are usually permanent methods of contraception. Tubal ligation, also known as tubal sterilisation of women, is a common procedure and there are many methods of doing this.
What is Tubal Ligation?
In a layman’s language, tubal ligation is also known as getting your ‘tubes tied’. In this method of female sterilisation, the Fallopian tubes which carry eggs from your ovaries are blocked by clamping, sealing, or severing them. This prevents sperms from getting to the eggs and fertilising them, thus effectively preventing pregnancy. This type of tubal sterilisation can be done through a laparoscopic procedure, mini-laparotomy, or tubal implants.
How Effective is Tubal Ligation?
Tubal ligation is considered almost 100% effective. But there is a 0.5% chance (5 in 1000) that women who have had tubal ligation will become pregnant one year after the process. In the five years after the procedure, there is a 1.3% chance of pregnancy. Improper surgery or being pregnant at the time of the procedure are reasons why a pregnancy might occur after tubal ligation.
Is Sterilisation Right for you?
Sterilisation is recommended only for those women who are sure that they do not want any more children. It is also a good option for those who have health issues that might worsen due to pregnancy and for those with some serious hereditary condition that you do not want to pass on. Discuss it with your spouse, family, and doctor before you arrive at a decision on whether this is a good option for you.
Is Tubal Ligation Painful?
In some types of tubal ligation, an incision will have to be made on your body. Your doctor will also administer general or local anaesthesia depending on the type of sterilization you have opted for. When general anaesthesia is given you will go to sleep and wake up only after the procedure while local anaesthesia keeps you awake the entire time but the area is numbed so you do not feel anything during the time.
Types of Tubal Ligation Procedures
The common types of tubal ligation procedures can be classified as those that require an incision and those that do not. Laparoscopy and mini-laparotomy belong to the former category while tubal implants also known as Essure is in the latter category.
1. Incision Sterilisation
The two methods of incision sterilisation are laparoscopy and mini-laparotomy with both requiring either local or general anaesthesia.
Laparoscopy is preferred for its quicker recovery time, being less painful and less invasive. The entire procedure takes only about 30 minutes and causes minimal scarring. Most women can return home the same day.
A mini-laparotomy is considered a major surgery and is usually done under general anaesthesia during the first day or two of childbirth. It is also performed during a C-section.
2. Tubal Implants
The process of putting in tubal implants or Ensure does not require any kind of incisions as it is performed through the cervix and the vagina. Metal springs are inserted into the Fallopian tubes and gradually scar tissue forms around it causing permanent blockage in the tubes.
How to Prepare for the Sterilisation Procedure?
Tubal ligation can be done at a hospital and also in some outpatient clinics. Your doctor will discuss the reasons why you are opting for this procedure and want to know if this is a well-thought-out decision. You will be informed of the type of sterilization procedure best suiting your individual circumstances. Many women choose to have this surgery shortly after childbirth or in combination with some other surgery. If you are not having this procedure immediately after childbirth, you might be asked to use contraception for one month prior to and one month after the procedure.
Procedure For Incision Sterilization
The laparoscopic procedure for tubal ligation and the mini laparotomy are termed incision sterilization.
In laparoscopic sterilization, you will be administered local or general anaesthesia after which the doctor pumps gas into your stomach cavity to help visualize the organs better. A couple of small cuts will be made near the belly button through which the doctor will insert a laparoscope to pinpoint your Fallopian tubes. Once located, the tubes will be closed off and the procedure is completed. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes.
A mini-laparotomy is commonly done after childbirth and after general anaesthesia is given, the doctor will make a cut near the belly button. The Fallopian tubes are brought up through this cut and clips are used to block them while in some instances, a section of the tubes is cut off.
Procedure For Tubal Implants
If tubal implants are the method of sterilization, there is no need for any kind of anaesthesia. Your doctor will dilate the cervix just before the procedure and then pass a thin catheter through the vagina and cervix up to one of the Fallopian tubes. This catheter will place an implant in the tube and repeat the process with the other tube. X-rays will be taken afterwards to ensure the implants have been placed correctly and the tubes blocked.
How will you Feel after Tubal Ligation?
You may experience cramps like when menstruating or experience some amount of vaginal bleeding as a result of uterus movement during the procedure. If you had a laparoscopic procedure, the gas used might cause your stomach to be swollen for a day or two. The gas might also cause back or shoulder pain for a while. It is important to call your doctor immediately if your incision starts to bleed, you get a fever or a rash, you find it difficult to breathe, there is a continuous pain in your belly, or you see an unusual discharge from your vagina.
Even after a tubal ligation, your periods will continue as before until you reach menopause. Sterilization does not bring about any hormonal imbalances, unlike birth control methods that rely on hormonal factors.
How Long does it Normally Take to Recover after Tubal Ligation?
Recovery times will vary depending on your lifestyle, your health prior to the procedure and the kind of tubal ligation you opted for. After laparoscopic tubal ligation, you are likely to go home the same day. Recovery from a mini-laparotomy may take a few days. If you had tubal implants, you are likely to be able to return to your normal routine the same day. A follow-up examination will be scheduled for a couple of weeks after the procedure.
Can Tubal Ligation be Reversed?
In some instances, tubal ligation can be reversed though it is a major surgery and you will have to be in the hospital for a few days. The chances of a successful reversal will depend on factors such as the type of tubal ligation done, your age, time elapsed since the procedure, and the damage your tubes have experienced. Pregnancy rate after reversal vary greatly and range between 30% and 85%.
Reversal of tube ligation puts you at a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy which can be a life-threatening condition.
Risks and Complications
Since tubal ligation is an abdominal surgery conducted with anaesthesia, there are certain risks and complications that can occur such as:
Organ damage to the bowel, bladder or major blood vessels
Reaction to anaesthesia
Failure of the wound to heal and a possibility of infection
Pain in the pelvis or abdomen that lasts for a long time
Permanent scarring at the site of the incision
The risk of complications is higher if you have had abdominal or pelvic surgery prior to this. A history of obesity or diabetes also increases the possibility of complications after tubal ligation.
How Soon can you have Sex After Sterilisation?
Your doctor will be able to give you a timeline on when it is safe to resume having sex after a sterilization procedure though most people wait for a week or two. If the tubectomy has been done soon after childbirth, the wait time might go up to four weeks at a minimum. Some women may experience pain or discomfort during sex for up to a year after Essure implants.
Does it Provide Protection against STDs?
No, tubal ligation is only a form of permanent sterilisation and does not offer any kind of protection from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) for men or women. Sterilisation is only a means of effective birth control. Using a condom is the best way of lowering your chances of contracting or spreading STDs as male or female sterilisation methods are of no help here.
After tubal ligation with incision method, no backup birth control is required. But when it comes to tubal implants, it is recommended that you use some other form of birth control for about three months. After this period, an x-ray can help confirm that the procedure has been successful and you can stop using other methods of birth control. It is normal to think that sterilisation might change you in some way. However, you will not gain weight, grow facial hair, or bring on menopause. Just make sure that sterilisation is the best choice for you before you plough ahead.
