Be Your Own Boss! 5 Tips for Successful Freelancing
Many women quit office work to stay at home and take care of their children. However, the urge to be financially independent remains. If you're one of the many who feels this way, getting started as a freelancer can give you the best of both worlds.
Being a working mom is never easy. You need to juggle between your house and job which often leads to your little ones feeling neglected and you exhausted. A better and popular option is to work from home. If you have a flair for writing, why not become a freelance writer? It gives you the freedom to work at your convenience.
What Is a Freelance Writer and Do You Match up?
If this is your first venture into freelance writing, you may not know much about this role. A freelance writer is one who writes content for one or many clients. She’s a self-employed individual and is not on the roll of any one company. She gets paid for the content she writes and has the freedom to choose the projects she’d like to work on. (You can take a look at the other kind of jobs available for stay-at-home moms here.)
How to Become a Successful Freelance Writer
1. Keep Rediscovering Yourself
We take it, since you are considering becoming a freelance writer, that you have fairly decent language skills. A lot of online courses will also help you brush up your basic language, grammar, and writing skills.
However, as a writer it is not only important for your language to be correct and your grammar to be strong; it is also important to keep reinventing your style, tone, voice of writing. This is the key to becoming a successful freelance writer. Depending on your client's requirement, nature of his business, etc. You may be required to adopt a formal tone, a casual tone, a quirky tone, etc.
Expert Advice: Try and experiment with different sectors or business. Write as many different kinds of articles as you can, to practice your writing skills (movie reviews, product reviews, essays, news-based articles, etc.).
2. Start a Personal Blog
The best way to experiment with your writing style is to start your own personal blog. A lot of free blogging websites will allow you to create your own blog-URL. The best part about having a personal blog is – it is your personal space. You can write/explore whatever topics you feel like in this space. You can write about new things that catch you interest, or topics that you have always felt strongly about.
Once you become adept at blogging, start sharing your work on your social media platforms. Tap into as many social networks as possible, and push your content to people. Seek their opinions, and work on the feedback you get.
Expert Advice: Pick topics from current affairs. This way, what you write will be relevant to your readers, they will want to read it, and you will remain abreast with whats happening around in the world. One of the most important quality of some of the best freelance writers, is that their content is 'relevant and relatable'.
3. Send out Feelers to Potential Clients
In your quest to become a freelance writer, you need to send out query letters to potential clients you’d like to work for. Make sure they’re impressive and highlight your skills as a writer. This doesn’t mean weaving together bombastic words just to show off your vocab! It means writing clearly and simply to get your point across.
You can even build a portfolio for yourself. Make a collection of some of your best pieces. You can pick from your own blog, or once the work starts flowing in, you can choose from different writing projects you have delivered to different clients so far.
Expert Advice: Keep scouting job portals, and classifieds section of the newspaper for potential new clients.
4. Find a Niche for Yourself
When it comes to writing content, you’ll be faced with different types of content like technical, academic, fashion, beauty and health. Deciding on your niche is always a good idea. It’ll help you find a job that suits you perfectly.
While, there’s no need to restrict yourself to one particular niche, it would be good to develop exceptional skills in 2-3 areas. That will make scouting for new clients easier for you. At the same time, try and pick 3-4 allied areas to focus on too (so you don't get bored or limit yourself to only your niche topics.
Expert Advice: If you are unable to decide on particular niche areas, try and take a look at two things: the kind of content you yourself consume and the books you read, and the kind of topics that you feel very strongly about. That will give you leads to pick niche areas.
5. Research is Key - and you MUST Do it Well
One of the most important tips for freelance writers is to research. Don’t write without understanding the topic. Take the help of books or search the web for information. The world now is more well-read and observant than it was before – you do not want to make a fool of yourself and be trolled!
Also remember, research is two-pronged: there is the research that you do to gain perspective on an issue that you don't have much idea about, and there is research that helps you verify facts, also known as fact-checking. Both are important, so make sure you are adept in both.
Expert Advice: While you may 'look for inspiration' on the web and in books, never ever copy someone's work and present/publish it as your own. Plagiarism is a serious offence in the world of freelance writing. Steer clear of the temptation to copy or even rehash someone, even if you may idolise their work/them.
6. Do not Underestimate the Value of a 'Well-Read' Mind!
;It's called reading. It’s how people install new software on their brains.” - Randy Glasberge
One of the earliest steps you can take towards becoming a sound writer is to first become a voracious reader! The more you read, the more you are aware of different perspectives, the more your ideas and thinking is challenged, and the more you will have to say, express or opine.
Expert Advice: While most people by and large find autobiographies and non-fiction boring, always remember – 'people' are the best books you'll ever read. At least read one biography or non-fiction novel every three months.
7. Networking and People-skills Go a Long Way
Any kind of freelance business will not thrive unless and until you actively network yourself. Go out and meet people every chance you get. Get interested in what they do for a living. One of the ways to explore this is to look for online forums that can put you in touch with like-minded people. Most of these forums are free, and several of them have meet-ups on a regular basis.
Expert Advice: Find a group or organisation in your city that will give you exposure to more and varied people. Also explore your current social circle for potential connections.
8. Visiting Cards Bring in Business
We know this one might sound bit too much. However, the one way to make people remember they have met you, and the service you are offering, is to turn your interaction tangible. The best way to do this is to hand them a visiting card.
It might seem unnecessary, but is very important. Even big CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg have a visiting card (and a rather smart-assy one at that!). If such a famous man who needs no introduction also has a visiting card, why shouldn't you?
Expert Advice: The simpler and uncluttered your visiting card, the greater impact it is bound to make.
It’s common for content to be rejected or returned to writers for rework. Don't let this demotivate you! Use it to perfect your art instead and you will succeed eventually. Read more

Homemade Baby Bibs for Your Child
Baby bibs are very handy when you have messy little kids. Most bibs you find in a store are of poor quality. Here is how to make homemade baby bibs without taking a lot of time.
Why Do Infants Need Bibs?
Many parents have the question of why babies should wear bibs and at what point of age, but the answer depends on what stages of development the baby is. They could start using bibs in just a couple of weeks. Why do they need bibs?
Babies are quite messy even if they don’t start eating solid foods.
They also tend to drool excessively which might dampen their clothes really fast.
Bibs make it easier to take care of your baby’s clothes when they reach the age of spitting up, which is roughly around 0-3 months.
Spitting is reflux that happens when they drink the milk a little faster.
Bibs are very easy to wash too!
How to Make Baby Bibs at Home?
When you buy baby bibs from the store, it is always way too small. You can thus create your DIY baby bibs with patterns so that it is big enough for the baby and it will cover their bellies properly staying mess-free while they eat.
1. Choosing The Right Fabric
Making a bib can be fun because they are very easy and quick to make and it does not cost anything. You should first take 2 pieces of fabrics that measure 14 and 16 inches. They are inexpensive, or you could even use some fabric from any other leftover project.
For making a set of bibs, you could use organic cotton print for the front part of the bib. You will find a variety of organic cotton with many cute prints made using natural dyes, which are low-impact.
You could use PUL (polyurethane laminate) for backing. This is the same material used in the production of cloth diaper covers. You can use PUL for extra protection for the clothing of the baby but note that PUL is not always needed.
For the backing, you could also use terry cloth fabric, but this is not advisable as it does not offer the same protection as PUL. In case you are planning for an entire cotton option, then this is your best choice. For this, you could take an old towel.
For the back layer, you could simply use cotton muslin. This material is very inexpensive and is always available. You might also be able to find the organic version of this material.
2. Making a Baby Bib Pattern
All around the web you will find a wide variety of baby bib patterns. If you are planning to use a bib you already have with you then all the way around the bib you will need to add an extra ½ inches for the seam allowance when you create your pattern in proper order.
Take a piece of butcher paper or a newspaper and then lay the bib on them. The snap or the Velcro should be undone so that the bib is flat on the paper. Starting from ½ inches from the edge, trace around the entire bib on the paper. You could work your way around using a small sewing gauge ruler. After you are done, cut along the lines you drew. Now, this piece you made is to be used as your pattern.
For the pattern, if you cannot access the bib, then you could always use a free printable one from the internet. You could also draw your own design if you are very crafty.
You should also decide whether you are going to use a snap press or a hook and loop to fasten the bib. This can be based on what you have access to and is just a matter of choice. You could also choose Velcro.
3. Supplies You Will Need
Fabric
Matching thread
Pins
A sewing machine
Velcro or snaps (or any other option you have on mind)
Baby bib pattern
4. Sewing Baby Bibs Instructions
Preparing to Sew:
The fabric you are going to use must be pre-washed.
Place your pattern down face-up and keep it on the right side of a single thickness of the front fabric you use. If you had decided on fabric with designs, then ensure that you keep it the correct way concerning your pattern.
Cut around the pattern after pinning it to your fabric.
Pin it, the wrong side up, after flipping the pattern over. This should be done to your backing fabric to a single thickness of the right side. You should then cut around the material.
The two bib pieces should be pinned together right sides.
Sewing Instructions:
Though the pattern has a seam allowance of ½ inches, you could stitch the full allowance which is ½ inch through the inside curve of the neck. You do this so that the neck opening is spacious around the neck of the baby. Outside the bib and around the top sew the ¼ inch allowance.
Along the bottom edge, please leave an opening of about 3 inches wide. Sew all the way around the cube starting from one of the bottom corners and stop 3 inches before you reach the starting point of the bib.
Along the inside curve of the neck, clip the seams and cut the notches anywhere else the bib curves outward. You do this so that the bib will be allowed to lay flat when it is flipped right side out.
Turn the bib through the 3 inches opening so that it turns right side out.
Focusing on the edges of the bib, press it down so that the seam is placed flat.
You should also make sure that you press the 3 inches opening under so that the bib is even with the seams on both the sides.
Starting from the top edge, stitch 1/8 inches all the way around.
If you had decided to use snap-press, then add the snaps at the end of the wings that meet at the back of your baby’s neck.
Or if you had decided to use a hook and loop, then you will need to decide on the width which should be of the right size for the pattern of the bib. About 1 inch long cut a piece and sew each of these sides to the ends of the wings which meet at the back of the baby’s neck.
Making your baby bibs is a really simple and fun project you could do by reusing old material!
As you can see, baby bibs are very important and easy to make. But do not forget to remove the bib when your baby falls asleep. This can be dangerous, and you need to be careful especially when they sleep soon after they eat. It is best to remove it after feeding them.

Expecting Little Bundle of Joy Soon....Yes!!!!
I am an expecting new mom-to-be, waiting for my first baby and I am in the 36 th week. Like all new expecting mothers, I am also very anxious about the labour and delivery.
As far as now, with Almighty's grace, everything is going fine through out the pregnancy.
I was working till my 6th month, and then I couldn't continue since my doctor felt like my cervix was short and to rest is better. So, I was resting, I didn't do much work.My mom was a great support to me.She use to take very good care of me.
Moving close to the end of pregnancy, also builds up a fear of labour, first of all I start thinking will I get labour pain?, or will the 40th week also get over and will I be induced for labour pain?, will I be able to withstand the pain?, will I deliver the baby normaly or due to any reason if the doctor suggests c-section ,what will I do?. I have a big bundle of questions wandering in my mind always.still I try to calm down myself and hoping for the best soon.As of now I use to walk and do very simple excercises, hoping those will help me.My doctor told me to limit on carbs, so we can avoid the risk of gestational diabetes.
My haemoglobin levels are very low, only 7.5, in my 32 week.
So my doctor suggested to take iron injection twice a week, inorder to increase the my hb. I am trying to increase hb through diet also. But still iam afraid whether my hb levels will hike up or not. Only after a set of doses taken my hb level in blood will be checked and i am eagerly waiting with fingers crossed.
I am equally curious about my new born baby, purchasing new born essentials even though iam not clear about the exact essentials I am buying whichever I think might be useful. I am all excited to setup my hospital bag also. So, hoping everything to be fine in my delivery.

Wonderful Life With My Son and Loving Every Moment of Life Spent With Him
I have a 2-year-old son and I raise him alone. I'm a single mom but I give him so much love and care that he doesn't need anything else in life. This pandemic life is a little hard but I'm trying my best to be the hero and the she-man for my son. Need help but I'm just trying on my part to fulfil my son's dream. I will raise him so well that he will value things more than the price. My husband got into an extramarital relationship when my baby was just a month, but now that I'm a single mom, I'm raising my only prince so well. We do not need to worry about anything, placing all our trust in God. This lockdown life is really hard at the same time I get more time to play with my baby and have fun playing with him. I pray that we get a better life one day and with a head held high and I hope I will be able to give the best education to my son and he will make me proud someday and he will help me to grow old with lots of love and care. I'm jobless at the moment, so life is hard but yes I have faith in God that he will show me his miracle. Life is beautiful when we smile and live only in the present. We must avoid living in the past or the future because today is very precious. My every second is so precious because every moment I breathe with my son, he always makes me feel good and better. Life is so pleasant when I spend time with my son and he loves being with me. He is so cute and funny that always makes me happy.
If there is any single mom please don't be sad but be the hero for your child and try everything in life to be happy. Don't worry about anything and give all your faith in God.
I need financial support from someone who could help me fulfil my dream and my son's. But I will keep this problem with God because I know he will be there for us and help us get what we want in life. I will never make my son feel lonely or depressed but will make him laugh and play.
