16 Best Home Remedies for Blocked Nose in Babies
A cold and a blocked nose can make your baby cranky and uncomfortable, and give both of you sleepless nights. If you don't wish to consult a doctor just yet, try out these home remedies to provide relief from a blocked nose.
Natural Remedies for Blocked Nose in Infants
In India, many parents resort to home remedies as they are not only inexpensive but also safe, unlike antibiotics (which may have side effects) and over-the-counter medicines (which should not be given to infants). Here are some of the best home remedies for nose congestion in infants.
1. Focus on breastfeeding your baby. Breast milk has essential nutrients and antibodies that develop and strengthen your baby's immune system. A good immune system will help your baby fight against a cold and cough.
2. You can also put a few drops of breast milk into your baby's nose to open up the nasal passage.
3. You can make nasal drops for your baby at home. To 8 teaspoons of water, add ½ a teaspoon of salt and mix well with a sterilised spoon. Pour a few drops into your baby's nostrils once the solution cools down.
4. Eucalyptus oil is used to treat cold and open up a nasal blockage. Sprinkle a few drops of the oil on your baby's pillow and bedding. Since the smell is too strong for infants, eucalyptus oil shouldn't be directly applied to the skin.
5. Elevating your baby's head with the help of a pillow helps the mucus flow out, thereby opening up the nasal passage.
6. Keeping your baby hydrated is important, more so when she's down with a cold. Fluids dilute the mucus and relieve stuffiness in the nose. You can also feed warm and unsweetened apple juice and chamomile tea (without honey) if she's older than 6 months.
7. Clear chicken soup is another useful home remedy for a cough and cold. Chicken contains anti-inflammatory properties that clear up the nasal massage as well as improve your baby's immunity.
8. In case the nasal congestion is severe, turn on the shower and let the hot water create steam in the restroom. Then, take your baby into the bathroom for a few minutes. You can also give him a bath with warm water.
9. A nasal aspirator can do wonders for a stuffy nose. Just squeeze the air out of the aspirator gently insert the tip into your baby's nostril. Then slowly release the bulb so that the mucus gets sucked into it. Do the same with both the nostrils. After every use, wash the aspirator and sterilise it.
10. A cool mist humidifier will create moisture in the air and clear out the congestion in your baby's nasal passage.
11. In case you don't have a humidifier, keep a bucket of warm water in her room while she sleeps. The warm water will help to ease your baby's stuffy nose.
12. A mustard oil massage is another effective way of treating a cold and nasal congestion. To 1/4th cup of mustard oil, add 3-4 cloves of roughly crushed garlic and methi (fenugreek) seeds and heat it. Once the oil cools down, massage your baby with it. Apply the oil to the nasal bridge, forehead, cheekbones, chest and the back with soft and gentle hand movements.
13. Dried-up mucus is one of the main culprits of a blocked nose. Wet a cotton swab with warm water to clean the insides of your baby's nostrils. Do it gently and with care to avoid hurting your little one.
14. Lay your baby across your knees and pat her back gently. This brings the mucus up from the chest and she can cough it out easily.
15. Give your infant a warm compress. Soak a small piece of cloth in warm water, squeeze out the excess water and place on her nose and cheeks. Repeat this a few times.
16. Roast a few garlic cloves with ajwain until the aroma starts to waft out. Tie these up in a potli and keep it a safe distance from your little one. The fumes will provide relief from a stuffy nose.
When Should You Visit the Paediatrician?
If home remedies aren't working for your baby, she may need a medical check-up. Consider visiting a paediatrician if:
The cold doesn't clear up within three weeks
Your baby takes quick breaths
She is running a high temperature
She coughs up blood
Your baby's condition seems to be getting worse
Your little one has a persistent sore throat
You see her wheezing and her skin turning pale or blue
How Does the Diagnosis Happen?
A paediatrician will check your baby's temperature and observe her breathing pattern. For more clarity on your her health condition, an X-ray may be suggested.
Home remedies for cold, cough and nasal block are practised in every Indian household. However, we must understand that all cases of nasal congestion cannot be cured through home remedies. Especially, care and precaution should be taken in case of babies. In such a case immediate visit to a doctor is a must.

Planning and Brainstorming We Did for Picking Our Baby's Name
When I was pregnant, I spent my nights intently looking for names, rationalising every word, contemplating every search, and assessing my own reasoning - logically and theoretically. With the gender suspense came a cumbersome task of making two lists - one for a baby girl and one for a baby boy. To mitigate the efforts, I delegated one task to my husband - searching for a boy's name was his job. Despite that, (well, I'm sure you know how a woman's mind works!) I kept my search on for both, afraid that I might not like what he selects, and I was also worried that our baby would be nameless until we both agreed on one. And so, our quest went on for nine long months.
Christening ceremony is a one-day celebration, but the background process is a long one. Scanning through my pregnant facial changes (puffed-up eyes, swollen face, and cystic acne) and my sharp bulged-out tummy, most old ladies prophesied that I was going to give birth to a baby boy. Hearing this over and over again for a hundred and fifty odd days, I believed them. During one of our baby talks, we discussed the gender. My husband believes that a name should hold a story and not a fantasy. His dad named him Yasha (meaning - victory through the right hand of God) after their family was delivered from a series of unanticipated distressing circumstances. With this in mind, we didn't want to pick any random name for our baby.
During my morning devotions, meditating on Kings, I was tired of reading through the Kings era. No wonder I hated history. I couldn’t fathom how people killed each other mercilessly. Just for the love of a throne, authority and power, there would be a succession of murders - somebody became king, and he would be killed by a person who wanted to be the next king. And so the series of killings followed. As I was reasoning with my husband one evening, I perceived that God wanted my little baby to become a warrior.
Over long sleepless nights and lots of debates, I chose two names for a baby girl, out of which we both liked and mutually agreed on one. And, yay! We were ready with a baby girl’s name. Task one fulfilled!
The tough task (baby boy's name) was still at bay. We came up with our own lists but failed to reach an agreement, even when the baby was due any minute. It was upsetting. To avoid making our baby a Mr. Nobody, I unwillingly forced myself and half-agreed to one name (Mr.Somebody). Lol. When the day finally arrived, after a 36-hour long labour and excruciating pain, our tiny miracle popped out with a squeaky cry.
As soon as we came to know it's a girl, we both looked into each other's eyes while holding our precious little one and said - Liz Arlene. She immediately looked up, as if she already knew her name.
Here's the meaning of the fulfilment of God's promise of our tiny warrior: Liz - God's promise, Arlene - powerful and complete.

Mealtimes Should Be Fun
Nowadays, babies don't eat their food if we don't turn on television for them or play some animated video in our smartphone. I believe meal time is the most precious time for everyone and that includes infants as well. The time when we eat food should be happy and peaceful. As we take care of our children's physical health by making sure that they eat all the nutritious food, we need to take care of their mental and emotional health too. For this we should try to make our children eat in a peaceful environment. You will have to be a little strict with your child, but that's okay. You must not allow them to watch television while eating. Some tips which I follow for my child:
1. If a child is hungry then he will throw less tantrums and we won't need a television or mobiles to distract them. If your child throws tantrums, you can make some funny faces and feed her.
2. While feeding I always sing rhymes/bhajans or mantras to my child to distract her. She is easily distracted and opens her mouth to eat. Singing mantras or any religious songs to children helps in their emotional development.
3. I always keep looking for new and innovative ways to get my child to eat because singing songs every day or making faces don't work. I pretend to talk to the chair, her toys, wall clock, and any thing around me at that time. I usually say, 'khalo chair! khalo chair! My baby is sharing her food with chair" and then she takes it from my hand.
4. A child's father should also help. My husband also distracts our child while she is eating. At dinner time, my husband jumps, does yoga poses, or runs slowly to get her interested. He does anything and everything possible to make sure she eats her food without watching television.
5. My baby will turn 11 months old. Up until now, I haven't made her watch videos in mobile phones at her meal times. But I give my phone to her for about 10-15 minutes every day so as to make her learn poems.
6. Last but not the least, I read story books to my child. We also play with her so that she can learn the value of playing outdoors and physical health.
Using mobiles can be very dangerous for a child's mental health. It can hamper their physical growth too. Gift your child real happiness. Don't let them get intoxicated by digital world. Try your 200% to feed your child without turning on the television. My husband and I switch off our mobile phones too before going to bed and keep them far away when our little girl is awake or playing. I hope all the babies stay healthy and happy.
