How to Sleep After Cesarean Delivery
No mom can ever forget the sleepless days and nights that follow delivery. While parenting is no doubt a wonderful experience, the initial few weeks after childbirth can be tough. The recovery period after a C-Section delivery will be painful and require the better part of your patience and courage. But remember, this is a temporary phase and you will sail through it eventually.
Why Is It Difficult to Sleep After a C-Section?
Sometimes, during pregnancy and after pregnancy, a woman’s airway is unable to function smoothly due to increased hormone levels and increased abdominal volume. This condition is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and observed in a lot of women. Improper breathing and collapsing of the airway makes it difficult to stay asleep when you manage to find the time to. Another significant reason why moms suffer from insomnia, fatigue and depression after a C-Section delivery is the pain. But, with proper care and precautions, you’ll be able to recover faster.
How Does Sleeping Position Affect the Quality of Sleep after a Cesarean?
While pain medications almost always help you fall asleep, an appropriate sleeping position will ensure better breathing and a sound nap. Choosing the most comfortable sleeping position will reduce the strain on your abdominal muscles, in turn, reducing the pressure on your incision.
What Are the Best Sleeping Positions to Adopt after a C-Section Delivery?
There is no single sleeping position that works for everybody. What works for one mom may not work for another. It’s a process of trial and error till you find a sleeping position that suits you best. You can choose from these best ways to sleep after a C-section delivery.
1. On the Back
A lot of women vote sleeping on the back as the most comfortable position after a surgery. In this position, your incision won’t be under any pressure anymore. You can also put a pillow under your knees. The only downside is that you can strain your belly while sitting up or getting out of bed. After a few weeks, try rolling on to your side if it doesn’t hurt much. Women with high blood pressure may be advised against this.
2. To the Side
You might find it comfortable to sleep on your side soon after delivery. Sleeping to the left side aids optimum blood flow and digestion (which you very much need). You can use pillows to support your belly and hips. An advantage of sleeping to the side after a C-Section delivery is that you can prop yourself up on your elbow and push with your arms to sit up and get out of bed. Tip – breathe out while pushing yourself up.
3. Elevated Upper Body
Friends who have had a cesarean delivery will tell you that pillows are your lifesavers. They’re indeed right. Prop yourself on a pile of cosy pillows so that your entire upper body is elevated, not just the head. This position facilitates better breathing and easy sleeping for many suffering from OSA.
4. In a Recliner
For many women, finding comfort in any position becomes really difficult. But many moms have claimed to have slept in a recliner or rocking chair. Of course, it doesn’t feel like sleeping on a bed, but it makes getting up easier. You can also breastfeed with ease.
Tips to Improve Quality of Sleep While You Recover
For new moms, it is important to have sound sleep even if it is for a short duration of time. Since good quality sleep helps you recover faster, here are some tips to keep in mind:
Follow your doctor’s advice and don’t discontinue your medication to get better sleep.
Avoid exerting yourself, climbing stairs, or lifting weights heavier than your baby. You might run a risk of inviting complications and losing sleep. If you give your body time to heal, the pain will subside eventually and also help you sleep better.
That said, an optimum amount of movement and exercise can boost blood circulation and quicken the healing process. Once you feel better, you can start with short walks in and around your house. It will help you get better sleep at night.
Eating right is very important. Anti-inflammatory foods and foods that are high in Vitamin C like berries and broccoli should be included. You can also eat nuts and seeds.
Constipation is not uncommon for new moms. We advise you to drink lots of water and include fibre-rich foods to your diet. You can also ask your doctor about using a stool softener for better bowel movements. An irritable tummy can cause discomfort and make sleeping difficult.
Avoid getting up from bed too often during the first few weeks. You can request your husband and family to bring your baby to you when needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions on how to sleep after undergoing a C-section. Here we’ve answered a few of them.
1. Is It Okay If I Roll Onto My Belly While Sleeping?
Although rolling onto your belly is something you don’t have control over, deliberately sleeping on your stomach is advised against. That’s because the incision site will be sore and undergoing recovery. As the pain gradually subsides with time, you can sleep on your tummy if you find it comfortable.
2. Getting Out of Bed Is Very Difficult for Me Afte a C-section. Any tips?
While getting up from your sleeping position, turn to either side and prop yourself up with the help of your elbows. You can also ask a family member to assist you with this. First, assume a comfortable seated position and then let your legs dangle over the side of the bed. Put your feet on the floor and rest for a minute before you stand up. This method will make getting out of bed in the morning easier.
These are some of the most comfortable ways for good sleep after a C-section. Your emotional health is your first priority. A healthy and positive mind accelerates physical recovery. A happy you is what your baby needs right now.

5 Gadgets to Avoid During Pregnancy
Our level of comfort has moved from wired technology to wireless technology. But do we realise the side-effects that are associated with wireless gadgets? More importantly, such gadgets harm the little one in your tummy without you even realizing it!
If you’re a mommy to be, you probably spend a lot of time shopping for baby essentials online, talking to near and dear ones, scrolling through social media on your laptop and what not. But have you ever stopped to think about the damage that gadgets can cause to the development of your unborn child? Yes! It’s true. Excess use of wireless gadgets exposes you and your child to radiation.
There are two kinds of radiation exposure that pregnant women should worry about. The first is non-ionizing radiation, which comes from household appliances such as microwaves, ovens and television sets. The second is ionizing radiation which comes from X-rays. For years, people have grown increasingly worried about the dangers of high-frequency radiation from cell phones, wireless telephones, WiFi routers and microwave ovens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOF3i399Qww
KEY TAKEAWAY: Most home appliances release non-ionizing radiations, which are not as harmful as ionizing radiations. However, Dr. Teena Thomas (Obs-Gyn) recommends that as a precaution, use of these gadgets should be kept to a minimum during the nine months of pregnancy.
During pregnancy, smartphones should be used only on a need-base, and should be kept as far away from the body as possible.
Switch to using landline phones preferentially over mobile phones to further minimize use.
Stay away from radiation by keeping such gadgets far from your bedroom, especially while going to sleep.
While studies conducted right now are not conclusive as to the extent to which gadgets affect babies and pregnant women, we may never know the long-term effects, and so prevention is better than cure.
5 Gadgets to Avoid During Pregnancy
No doubt, smartphones and wireless gadgets have made life easy! But we fail to realise the cons that come along with this ‘ease’. You’ll be surprised to know the extent to which wireless gadgets affect the behavioural traits of the tiny munchkin in your womb. Here’s a list of gadgets that every woman should avoid during pregnancy.
1. WiFi Routers
On the use of Wi-Fi technology, the World Health Organisation says,“Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.” What’s important to understand scientifically, is that children have an absorbent brain tissue and thinner skulls, leaving them more susceptible to microwave radiation than adults. A study published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure found that children are more vulnerable to risk from radiation as compared to adults. Most women don’t know that WiFi routers and cellphones increase pregnant women's risk of suffering a miscarriage by nearly 50%.
2. Microwaves
Microwaves work by using electromagnetic radiation to raise the temperature of a food. This radiation creates electromagnetic fields (EMF). It is believed that EMFs cause low birth weight and birth defects. Food heated or cooked in the microwave should be avoided during pregnancy for the same reason. Heating food in plastic plates or bowls is hazardous since plastic containers have a cancer causing element called Bisphenol A(BPA),which is harmful for you as well as your baby.
3. Laptops
Worry not! Laptops and computer screens, if used in moderation, are safe for use during pregnancy. The concern arises, however, when pregnant women use laptops for a long period of time. Laptops get warmer with use and if you put it on your tummy, the heat can harm your baby. It’s best to place the laptop on a cushion or a table or use a cooling pad.You should make sure you practice proper posture when pregnant by putting your laptop on a desk or table and sitting upright in a chair. That way, the heat won’t get to your fetus, and you’ll have less back and arm pain in the long run.
4. Cell Phones
Cell phones are the main source of radio frequency-electromagnetic fields. Pregnant women who may have used their cell phones just two or three times a day still have an increased risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with behavioural conduct, managing emotions and dealing with common problems of relationships later in life.
5. Bluetooth Headsets
Even though Bluetooth headsets are most convenient when it comes to communicating while commuting, their radio frequencies are as harmful as that of microwaves. The bottom line is that it is a wireless gadget that attracts radiation right to your brain through your ear. Even though it’s debatable, wireless gadgets such as Bluetooth headsets must be kept well away from the body when you’re pregnant, as a precaution if not a legit safety measure.
Effects of Cell Phone Radiation on Pregnancy
Of all the gadgets mentioned above, cell phones are common across most households and it’s simply impossible to imagine a single day without them. Cell phones emit high-frequency radiation as compared to other gadgets, which make them unsafe for use during pregnancy.According to Yale School of Medicine, “Exposure to radiation from cell phones during pregnancy affects the brain development of the offspring, potentially leading to hyperactivity.” Exposure to cell phones before birth increases your child’s risk of developing certain behavioural problems. Pregnant women must stay away from cell phones for numerous reasons – mainly because at a developing stage, your baby’s brain is fragile and more vulnerable than adults. Your baby’s brain has very little bone protection, which is why there is greater absorption of radiation. Using a handset just two to three times a day is enough to raise the risk of babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reach school age. It is also believed that these radiations alter the DNA of adults. Just imagine their impact on your sensitive foetus!
So all the mommys-to-be are advised to keep their cell phones away from their abdomens and limit cell phone usage for their child’s sake.
Cautions about Using Gadgets during Pregnancy
Even though it is impossible to completely rule out the existence of wireless gadgets, there are a few measures that can be taken while using gadgets which will reduce your baby’s radiation exposure.
Distance is the key. Stay away from wireless gadgets and you’re good to go.
While using your cell phone, make sure you wear earphones to avoid bringing the phone near the brain.
Make it a point to turn off any electronic gadget when not in use, especially at night before going to bed. This minimizes radiation exposure during sleep time, which is essential since that’s the time when the body does a lot of DNA repair work.
Toggle mobile data on and off. Mobile internet services (2G, 3G, 4G) emit high frequency radiations and must be turned off when not in use.
Relocate the WiFi router and other wireless gadgets away from your bedroom.
Replace WiFi technology at home with wired Internet. This might sound like going back in time, but for the duration of your pregnancy at least, this should be considered.
There are quite a few gadgets that will assist you when you’re pregnant. The important thing to remember here is that even though most gadgets are useful, they’re simply adding to your radiation exposure. Moderation is the key! Excess use of any gadget is harmful, both for you and for your baby. To be on the safe side, it’s best advised to use wireless gadgets in moderation, so that you and your baby are healthy and happy.
