9 Foods That Should Be a Part of Your Growing Child's Diet
Healthy food is the fuel that a growing child needs for his overall development. But getting a toddler to eat nutritious foods is easier said than done. If you are a parent to a toddler, we know that getting him to eat those fresh florets of broccoli sitting on his plate must be preceded by repeated episodes of his meltdowns! But we also know that you don’t give up that easily, and you shouldn't! In his toddler years, your child will grow at a rapid rate. To make sure he stays energetic and healthy, get him into the habit of healthy eating as early as you can! Here’s a list of foods that will ensure your child grows healthier and stronger and falls ill less often!
9 Foods You Should Include in Your Child’s Diet
We have classified these healthy and tasty foods into three categories: foods for brain development, foods for boosting immunity, and foods for weight gain. Read on to learn more about what these superfoods can do for your little one!
Foods for Brain Development
1. Eggs
Eggs are a rich source of essential nutrients that are tied to brain health. Eggs can meet your child's requirements of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and lutein - all of which can improve his concentration power. Choline, a micronutrient found in concentrated amounts in egg yolk, can help in the proper functioning of the brain and regulate mood and memory. Including one egg in your toddler’s daily diet can make his mind works wonders. You can give this versatile food in boiled or poached form. You can also give him scrambled eggs, if he likes - he will get ample protein from eggs in this form too!
2. Whole Grains
Whole grain foods contain fibre, Vitamin E, and omega-3s. While fibre can keep your child satiated, Vitamin E and omega-3s can assist in his brain development. Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for the brain as it improves cognitive function. Eating whole grains is one of the easiest ways to derive the maximum benefits of this vitamin. Some whole grain foods that you can include in your child’s diet include whole-grain bread, brown rice, barley, oatmeal, etc.
In case you’re short on time (or ideas) Timios Zookers would prove to be a great alternative. Timios Zookers are bite-sized snacks made with whole grains like ragi, wheat, and oats and come in really cute shapes that kids love. This healthy snack sans artificial colour and preservatives can even support in his overall growth too!
3. Dairy Products
Milk and other dairy products like yoghurt and cottage cheese assist in brain development of children. Dairy foods, besides offering calcium in high amounts, can also provide a child with protein and B-vitamins, both of which are essential for the growth of the brain tissue. Dairy foods are also high in fat, which is vital for brain health. They keep brain cells in a healthier condition, ensuring that they are able to send and receive information. So whether your child makes a face or wrinkles his nose, make sure he drinks a glass of milk daily. Along with milk, you can even include yoghurt, cheese, or paneer in his diet.
Foods for Building Immunity
4. Berries
Bright and juicy berries pack in Vitamin C, which is crucial for immune strength. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries contain Vitamin C and flavonoids in high amounts, which can protect cells against injuries. So, why not fill your little one’s plate with natures best candy! If he refuses to eat plain berries, add them to his bowl of yoghurt or in smoothies. A sneaky way to get him to eat berries is by luring him to eat healthy energy bars. Timios Berry Bars are made with dates, oats, strawberries, cranberries, honey, and rice crispies. They contain no artificial colour or preservatives. On days, when you have no time to make a wholesome snack for your child, give him a Timios Berry Bar. It will provide him with the energy he needs till his next meal and it tastes ‘berry’ delicious too!
5. Yoghurt
We are well aware that probiotics (or healthy bacteria) in yoghurt keep the digestive system healthy. But not many of us know that they also help the body fight minor infections and illnesses. Yes, that’s true - by eating yoghurt, your curious explorer can fight cold and flu, and ear infections too! You can give him a bowl of fresh (preferably homemade) yoghurt, every alternate day. It packs in calcium and protein, which can also strengthen his bones and keep him full for long. In his toddler years, when your child’s immune strength is still developing, offer him nutritious foods like yoghurt, berries, and Vitamin C-rich foods to boost his immune strength.
6. Carrots
These bright orange and tasty root veggies are dense in beta-carotene, a nutrient which is converted into Vitamin A by the body. Vitamin A helps protect and maintain the mucous membrane, the first line of defence of our bodies, thus making it harder for the bacteria to attack or enter our systems. To work this immunity-boosting food into your child’s diet, you could steam or boil carrot sticks and serve them with a yummy yoghurt dip!
Foods for Weight Gain
7. Fruits, Dry Fruits & Nuts
Fruits like bananas and pears are dense in calories. Bananas contain potassium and fibre and pears are rich in Vitamin C, iron, and dietary fibre. They are also extremely versatile so whether you choose to make banana pancakes, fritters, or a creamy smoothie, you’ll have no trouble incorporating this super-fruit into your child’s diet. Pears can be mashed into a puree for younger kids or they can be sliced and fed to slightly older kids.
Other than fruits, dry fruits and nuts too help in weight gain. Almonds, pistachios, walnuts, raisins, cashew nuts, etc., can be added to your child’s diet. If your little one is too small to eat them, you can powder these tasty nuts and add it to your child’s glass of milk or add it to cereals. Fancy giving something tasty and different to your kiddo? Try Timios Mini Oaty Bites! Timios Mini Oaty Bites are made with dates, almonds, and cashew nuts, oats, berries, honey, malt extract - all of nature’s goodness! These Mini Oaty Bites are tasty plus healthy, and will melt easily in your child’s mouth – so let him enjoy a handful!
8. Cheese
While your child may demand unhealthy foods like fried foods and sweets, you know that giving in on a daily basis will have a negative impact on his health! To help your child gain healthy weight, include high-calorie foods in his diet. What do we mean by high-calorie foods? Cheese is a high-fat and high-calorie food, but it also offers other nutrients like Vitamin D and calcium. A cheese cube or sliced cheese with fruit makes for a healthy snack for your child. Better yet, add grated cheese to his parathas or sandwiches, and watch him have his meals with delight!
9. Peanut Butter
Peanut butter has gained popularity in the last few years and we can see why. It is packed with healthy oils and fats that every growing child needs. It is also a good source of antioxidants and thiamin. The antioxidants can protect your child’s nervous membrane and thiamin can help the brain utilize glucose to keep functioning. Peanut butter can help him gain weight and improve his cognitive function. Slather on the nutritious nut butter on toast, bread slices, or whole grain crackers and you have a creamy, healthy snack your little one will relish! If your child has a peanut allergy, substitute it with almond butter or hazelnut butter, they too are a healthy source of fats!
These are some nutritious foods that children should eat in their growing years. Apart from these foods, there are a plethora of foods you can choose from – everything natural is at your disposal! Here’s a tip - fill his plate with healthy and colourful foods and get creative with shapes - he will be more than willing to eat them! Read more

Simple Tricks to Remove Marks from Walls (Pencil, Pen and Crayons)
It is a moment of pride when you see your child turn into an artistic genius - however, not so much when his works of art are splashed along your walls! Children are curious. You give them a few pencils, pens, and crayons, and they are bound to scribble on pretty much any surface they see, and unfortunately, walls seem to be their most popular victim. Read on to find out easy ways to remove pencil, pen, and crayon marks from the walls in your house.
How to Get Pencil, Pen and Crayon Marks Off the Walls
You cannot always possibly keep an eye on your child and ask him to stop scribbling all over the walls. You can make your child understand that a paper or book is a better choice, but meanwhile, you will have to deal with the existing marks all over your house. So if you are wondering how to remove pencil and crayon marks from walls, then here’s how:
Ways to Remove Pencil Marks
Pencil marks are easier to remove, as opposed to pen or crayon marks. Here are a few ways to remove pencil marks from walls:
Using an eraser to strike off pencil marks is a no-brainer. You can use a good eraser to erase the marks on the wall gently. Make sure you do this slowly and gently; if you don’t, it might make it worse.
Art gum erasers are strong enough to absorb graphite. You can try removing pencil marks on your walls with this as well. They are available at stationery or art stores, and online too.
We all know that baking soda can do wonders when it comes to cleaning. This holds good for pencil marks across walls as well. Mix some baking soda in a bowl of water, and dip a clean cloth into this solution. Use the cloth to gently rub away the pencil marks.
Your daily white toothpaste can do more than just cleaning teeth and killing germs; it can help remove pencil marks on walls as well. Squeeze a tiny amount of toothpaste onto a soft, clean cloth, and gently rub the marks off your walls.
You can try using a dry cleaning solvent as well. These are available at local stores. Dry cleaning solvents are used to remove stains and dirt from surfaces.
Melamine foam erasers or melamine foam sponges are another great way of removing pencil marks from walls. All that you should do is wet the sides a little and rub it gently along the marks. It is an effective abrasive cleaner and is used for cleaning stains on various surfaces like the walls, counters, and floors.
Mild detergent can be used to remove marks from walls as well. Dilute a very small amount of detergent in water, and use a clean cloth to wipe away the marks gently. Make sure you use a very mild detergent to avoid the removal of paint from the walls.
Ways to Remove Pen Marks
Here are a few effective ways to remove pen marks from your walls:
Nail polish removers can remove tough stains like nail paints, so it can come in handy while trying to remove pen marks along walls as well. Dip a cotton earbud in some nail polish remover, and gently try to remove the marks. Use it carefully, as rubbing too hard might cause the paint to come off, too.
Toothpaste, as we mentioned above, can help remove pencil marks, and it can help remove pen marks as well. Gently dab a small amount of toothpaste onto a soft cloth, and wipe it across the stains.
If these tips and tricks do not work, you can get yourself some commercial products from the stores like ink and stain removers that can help remove pen marks from walls.
Ways to Remove Crayon Marks
Crayon marks happen to be one of the most stubborn stains there are, as compared to pencil and pen marks. But removing these marks is possible as well, and here is how:
Crayons are usually wax-based products, which means they can melt. Use your hair dryer to melt the marks off your walls. Once the stains start to melt, gently wipe them away with a cloth and some mild detergent.
While mayonnaise makes for a great dip and spread, it can also work wonders in removing crayon marks from walls. Apply a large amount of mayonnaise over the marks, and let it be for a few minutes. After this, use a clean cloth to wipe away the crayon and mayonnaise. Once you have done this, use another clean, soft cloth and some water to wipe the wall.
Use a ruler or a flat object to scrape off the crayon marks. Do this gently. Once you have removed the most of it, wipe the area with some mild detergent and water.
Most of these methods work effectively. You might be tempted to go ahead and paint your walls, but do this only when you are sure that your kid has learnt to stop scribbling on walls. Before trying the methods suggested above for removing marks from your walls, do keep in mind the type of paint you have used. This is because some of these methods may not be good for specific types of paint and you will end up ruining the wall.

Tips for Parenting a Child Prodigy
Some of the greatest people like, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Mozart, Gary Kasparov, and Nadia Comaneci have one thing in common, i.e. child prodigy. Researchers are divided on whether child prodigies are born or made and then there are those who believe there is a bit of both. Regardless of what the cause may be, if you think your child is a prodigy, here are some of the things you need to understand about them.
What is a Child Prodigy?
A child prodigy is a person (a child) who shows extraordinary skills at a very young age in one or more domains such as mathematics, science or music. A child prodigy possesses unusually in-depth knowledge in his subject of interest for his age and is often intellectually superior to his peers. While the performance of gifted children in the class can be two or three years above their age, a child prodigy can match even the adult professionals in the field.
What Are the Traits of a Child Prodigy?
When you interact with children who are a prodigy, their traits become immediately apparent. Here’s what makes a child prodigy:
1. Large Working Memory
Our working memories enable us to carry out our routine tasks. For example, working memory is used when we need to memorise a phone number someone tells us for a while before writing it down, which we do and may forget after some time. However, it's different with a child prodigy. Child prodigies have an enormous working memory that puts them in the top 1% regarding memory capacity. They can hold information in their heads while simultaneously processing and controlling other incoming information.
2. Higher IQ
It is no surprise that these children are also found to have higher IQ that’s well above the general population. The average IQ of the general population is 100 and prodigies have IQ’s over 128. Although it’s not always the case, it can be said that child prodigies are intelligent but not in the way that we would expect the IQ scores to predict. Sometimes as seen in cases of autism, the highly gifted prodigies are not so different from the rest of the population.
3. Complete Dedication
Child prodigies have a deep commitment to their area of interest and are able to focus intensely on topics for long periods of time. You would often find them completely absorbed in their interest and when this is continued for years, they develop skill and attain mastery of their subject. This is referred as the ‘rage to master’ by Ellen Winner.
4. Extraordinary Talent and Skill
Most often a child prodigy exhibits exceptional talent in one area; some children can show talent in multiple areas. It varies from child to child and the gift that they possess. Also, factors such as the domain of interest and support available to develop it from the family, education and the environment contribute to it.
How to Raise a Child Prodigy
Observing your child’s academic performance and general behaviour will help you identify a highly gifted child. Formal intelligence testing by a clinical psychologist can then confirm if a child is gifted. If you discover that your child is gifted and are wondering how to raise your little prodigy, here are a few tips.
1. Allow Your Child to Lead
In most cases, a child’s passion becomes clear from an early age. If you notice your child shows an interest in a particular field like music or dance, you can help nurture that talent by enrolling him to an activity class. The best way to go about is to support your child's interest and let him take ownership of his talent and its development instead of pushing it on him.
2. Work With Your Child to Set Goals
Help your child to set short-term goals that he can achieve in a stipulated time will build his confidence and help him stay focused. Once the goal setting is done, your role as a parent should only limit to ensuring that his actions support his goals. As your little one gets older, give him more control over how he'd like to be in discipline and manage his work.
3. Do What Works for Your Child
As a child's training time will increase, you as a parent may find it hard to balance family with your child’s schedule. Sometimes it will be challenging to keep up with your child's developmental curve and fulfil demands such as arranging for extra resources or expert mentoring. If your kid is a prodigy, he may not fit into regular schools and may get bored easily with the curriculum. In such cases, he may have to be homeschooled.
4. Lookout for Pitfalls
The high achievers are also prone to pitfalls that go unnoticed under the brilliance of their accomplishments. They are often affected by perfectionism, anxiety and low sense of confidence as the very qualities that contribute to their success make them susceptible to it. Like all children, they require love and care from their parents and need to understand that their failures or success does not influence parental love. Another pitfall to consider is the effect the gifted child’s big dreams and support have on a sibling in the family. It’s important to recognise the passions of both and value them equally.
Are Prodigies Made or Born?
Scientists who study child prodigies, they often argue between nature versus nurture. Two well-known prodigies exemplify the debate: Carl Gauss, one of the most important mathematicians in history, comes from a humble upbringing, while Mozart, was from a privileged background who had childhood lessons in music. Research, however, suggests that for most prodigies, the genetic component has a significant influence. They are often observed to be born with innate capabilities. However their talents alone aren’t enough to fully manifest themselves, dedication and practice are much-needed to develop their natural abilities. Prodigies can demonstrate their talent by the age of 10 or 11, but some show it as early as 3 to 5 years. A supportive environment is critical to nurture their innate abilities, and if it stays unexplored, it may never develop altogether.
With adequate nurturing, child prodigies can be helped to realise their talents fully. They also need to put in sustained efforts to develop their skills.

Becoming a Mother for the First Time: Perspective of an Independent Women
I became a first-time mom when I was 27 years old. I had a miscarriage before and an ovarian cyst surgery. I was elated when I found out that we were expecting again, but at the same time scared because of my previous experiences. But we were very fortunate, and to cut the long story short, we welcomed a lovely boy on 08.02.2018. I knew that having a baby would change my life. I was an independent young woman, living in the city on my own, taking care of my own needs and I felt that I was sufficient and efficient enough to take care of myself and my life. I was ready to take on responsibilities and giving birth to my baby boy did that. What I didn't know was, the responsibility that I was so ready to take on was nothing. It wasn't just a responsibility, it was a sacrifice . That's how I felt. It was a 24x7 job. The nights were long and endless. I was tired, I felt caged with the responsibility of another human life and not just mine. Sometimes I felt like running away, and just sat in the bathroom. I wasn't handling well. I looked at pictures of my friends on FB and other social media, where they kept posting pictures of their babies. They looked happy, they seemed to enjoy the phase and it made me wonder what made them so? Here I was on the verge of breaking emotionally, physically and mentally. And here they were making it look so easy. Did their mom give them any training, or was it inborn? Maybe some people are born with special talents, so many things were spiralling in my mind.
But with two weeks gone, my C-Section stitches were healing up, and I was adapting with my new role. I realised, all I needed was the support from family and friends, which I was very lucky to have and especially a loving husband. That did the trick. But I think, the most difficult part I felt was that life was not just mine anymore. I had to share my everything- my body, my time, my sleep with someone else. I had to manage and adjust with it. And I just wasn't ready for my independence to be taken away from me. But then, I fell head over heels in love with my little one, and it was the easiest thing I ever did, the most gratifying. It made me selfless, and I gave my whole heart away with his one smile, my life has become his and he has become my life.
P.S. - I want to tell those new mom's, struggling with this new phase of life, don't give up, I know it is not easy. It will pass, and you won't even know how the time passes and when you have to start running around for school admissions. Always remember "the nights are long but the days are short".

Social Stories for Kids with Autism - How They Help
Usually, kids with autism tend to generalise one experience with another similar one, which is why a new situation can prove to be quite overwhelming from them. Social stories prepare kids with autism to handle a social event or situation appropriately. Social skill stories for autism are highly emphasised on for improving one’s social skills.
What Are Social Stories?
A social story is a short story which breaks down any new or complex situation into easy-to-understand steps using highly accurate and descriptive information. It answers the 5Ws, i.e. who, what, where, when and why of a social situation using graphic and written information.
The aim of using social stories is to teach a different set of skills to children with autism, such as taking relevant cues in a particular situation, perceiving rules, routines, situations, abstract concepts or events, etc. Social stories help kids to expect the series of events (what comes next) in a social situation and prepare them for executive functioning (planning and organising).
History of Social Stories
The concept of social stories was designed by Carol Gray in 1991. During her career as a teacher, she began to experiment on her idea of 'social stories' to help her autistic students interact well in school-related activities which she aced over the years.
The terms ‘social story’ and ‘social stories’ are a trademark designed and fully patented by Carol Gray.

1. Memory development
Repetitive reading of short descriptive stories helps them in getting used to certain situations, including memory skills and prediction.
2. Viewpoints
Social stories portray different characters within a scenario and their feelings according to the situation. It helps children relate to a situation from various viewpoints, including their own. Ultimately, by understanding how one’s actions result have a certain impact on others, it prompts the development of empathy in kids.
3. Communicative skills
A social story tends to impart information and instructions as clearly and accurately as possible. When kids are given clear instructions, they know how to act or follow through on rules or patterns under such a situation in reality. It adds to the development of their communicative skills.
4. Clear understanding
A social story is individualised as every kid is unique in their own way. They all have different levels of understanding and experience. So when a social story is based on their current understanding and experience level, it leverages their learning skills by deepening their understanding level.
5. Development of literacy skills
Again, social skills are highly descriptive which also help in enhancing the literacy skills of your child.

4. Affirmative Sentences
These sentences are used to emphasise on the importance or support the meaning of a statement. For example:
I will take a bath daily. It is important to maintain good hygiene.
5. Control Sentences
Control sentences are the sentences formed by a kid with autism after reviewing their social story. These are to recollect personal strategies or solutions to use under certain circumstances. For example:
I need to take a bath every day to maintain good health and hygiene.
6. Cooperative Sentences
The aim of these sentences is to help the children understand the important contribution of others in a given situation or activity. For example:
“I want to go to an aquarium. My mom or dad will drive me there”.
7. Partial Sentences
These sentences are used for those children who have developed sufficient knowledge and are understanding of a certain situation. It encourages kids to guess their own and someone else's correct response in a given situation.
How to Use Social Stories for Autistic Kids
Following are some common usage of social stories:
Teaching children to perform a simple task like removing their shoes and placing them on the shoe rack.
Helping kids prepare for a complex event such as organising a birthday party, which includes social expectations.
Assisting children in comprehending and reacting to facial expressions, vocal tones or body language.
Encouraging them to make a choice in a complex setting by giving them options to choose from.
Introduction of social stories at an early stage is better. If you notice signs of autism in your kid at an early stage, opting for social stories for preschoolers with autism may be helpful. Also, if you don’t know how and where to start, it is recommended to take an expert's advice to help your kid learn these skills.

Don't Leave the Steering Wheel of Your Life in Someone Else's Hands
Don't leave the steering...
We live in a society where everyone is interested in other people's lives and want to give their valuable advice to others whether it is needed or not. More than that, there are people who want to control the lives of others. They are so dominating and interfering that they manipulate you, put a lot of pressure, making you fail to even think and understand what's going on. These kinds of toxic people could be so dangerous for you, your relationships, your family, and your mental health. Especially because somehow they make you feel like you are always wrong, you don't know how to make decisions, manage things, raise your kids, treat your husband, maintain your relationships, etc. They make you believe that you don't have any good qualities in you and you should listen to them, or else you will mess up everything if you make any decision or deal with any affair. They actually attack your self-confidence and self-esteem somewhere, to make you unsure about yourself. And when you spend so much time with such people around, you start to believe that way. You know that they are not your well-wishers or friends, but you are scared to go against their word. Because you are scared of failure or are worried about what if it doesn't work, then they would laugh at you, and you would prove them right if you fail. It happens, it's a cycle of thoughts. To get out of it, you need to break this cycle by taking a step forward. Let's see how to deal with this situation and such kinds of people:
1. Start looking and thinking
First of all, you need to address your mental state. When you start looking at yourself and the things around you, start to find out where the problem is. And mostly it's just that you can't do something because you didn't try to do that ever. So start looking and thinking about the things that matter for you and which you need to take control of.
2. Confidence
Whatever the matter is, confidence is the key. Start telling yourself, "I can do it". You become what you believe. Be confident, trust yourself and be sure about each and every step of yours. When you stand up filled with self-belief, half of your job is done.
3. Start taking responsibility
Most of the time, it's just that we don't accept the responsibility of a decision, we have an unknown fear of being responsible for something that doesn't go well. Fight that fear, leave that behind and tell yourself that it's okay if something doesn't work. You're not the first one to fail or make an inappropriate decision. There are people who fail and they learn from their failures. If something goes wrong, it's not the end of the world. When you leave that fear, you start living and enjoying your decisions.
4. Be clear
If you want to take that steering back, you need to be clear, with no confusion, no doubts, and no misunderstandings. Make up your mind and other people's minds very clear about it. You need to tell them that you are in an active mode, you are all there to take control of the situation and ready to take responsibility for the consequences. Sometimes, that energy and force need to be shown, to make them understand your intentions. Just come forward then and there right at the moment of decision making and present yourself firmly at that time.
You are the only one who has control over your personal life, your decisions, your likes and dislikes, people around you somehow affect that. But you should learn to take control in your hands, and learn to hold the steering yourself. Otherwise, they will lead you to the roads you never wanted to be on...
