How to Teach Your Child to Apologize (Say Sorry) and Actually Mean It
Along with words like 'please' and 'thank you', the other important word your child must learn is 'sorry'. Learning to say sorry is a hard thing to teach as compared to the other two, because it's not easy to teach your child to swallow his ego and let go of his pride when saying it. Your child might also not feel that his actions were wrong or that it requires him to apologize. At times, it is difficult to ensure that children actually mean it even when they are not willing to say sorry.
Why is It Important for a Child to Learn to Apologise?
Apologising is not just a social gesture because it helps your kid in identifying his mistakes, taking responsibility for it, and healing the relationship. At times, your child might squeak a sorry just to make you feel better. In such cases, the child does not learn anything from it. It is important to teach your child that saying sorry is not just a simple standby solution. He should learn and understand how he has affected another person by misbehaving. It is easy to force or push your child to say the word 'sorry', but making him understand what he has done is far more critical.
Easy Ways to Teach Your Child to Say “Sorry”
For raising your kid to become responsible enough to apologise and accept his mistakes, practice these tips.
1. Teach Your Child When to Apologise
It is hard to make a small kid understand what is right and wrong. But it is important to start bringing these two concepts into their awareness as early as possible. You can begin by explaining the meaning of an apology and pointing out that apologies should be made when he makes a mistake. Encourage the kid to empathise so as to help him realise his wrongdoings, like asking him how he would react if another kid did something similar to him.
2. Show Your Child How to Apologise Correctly
Start teaching your kid the different components of apologising the right way, because a good apology is not just muttering the word under his breath.
Make eye contact
Stand up straight and still
You should encourage the kid to add words into his apology like telling the listener what he did wrong so the listener knows that your kid knows what he did.
Your child can also end the apology with a promise of doing better in the future.
To ensure that his mistake has been forgiven, your child can follow up with a question.
Teach your child to use the correct tone of voice when apologising. You can do this by saying 'I'm sorry' in different tones to help your child understand what sounds genuine and what doesn't.
3. Help Your Child Deal With His Emotions
When you talk to your child about what he did that requires an apology, there are chances that he might be defensive of his actions. In this case, take some time and ensure that he understands why you asked him to apologize and why he shouldn't feel embarrassed. Let him know that accepting one's mistake takes courage.
4. Be Neutral
It is never a good idea to fall into two extremities - you should neither be too defensive of your child’s actions, nor blame your child and support the other child. You will also be hearing a lot of “he did it” or “she started it”. Try and remain calm in such situations and explain to them that both of them have to apologise to each other. If your child feels bad afterwards, explain to him that conflict happens between two people and that both of them contribute to it. So even if it did not start because of your child, it is still important to apologise.
5. Let Your Child Apologise in His Own Way
Sometimes he may not want to apologise at the time. In such cases, it is better to give kids, especially the older ones, time to calm down and think about what they've done before apologising. He can also apologise in his own way, like giving a hug, or a flower, or even a note. It is more important that your child is willing to say sorry and that he understands his mistake.
6. Make Your Child Aware of The Consequences of Not Apologising
If your child repeatedly refuses to say sorry for what he did, talk to him about the consequences he has to face because of his behaviour. You could say that his friend might not talk to him again and will refuse to play with him.
7. Walk the Talk
Never forget that you should be a good role model for your kid. When you make a mistake, you should never refuse to say sorry to your kid. Your child will never understand the significance of 'sorry' if he never hears it in the house. So when it is necessary, apologise without getting very defensive about it.
8. Focus More on the Good Behaviour
Always remember that the more your child starts to differentiate the right from the wrong, the lesser he will have to apologise. Therefore, good behaviour should be focused on more than teaching him to apologise because when the child keeps repeating his mistakes, his apology becomes meaningless. So first prep your child to identify his wrongdoings and amend them. Eventually, he will learn to avoid making such mistakes.
9. Remember to Show Love
When your child does something wrong, never let him feel unloved. Forcing a child to apologise will only make him feel more shameful and angry. Therefore, the best thing you can do is to make your child understand his mistakes and help him figure out the solution.
This process can be hard at first, but your child will gradually start developing responsibility, and he will start understanding the consequences of his actions and behaviour. He will start developing empathy, and you will definitely end up being proud to have raised a polite kid.

How to Help a Child with Behaviour Problems at School - 5 Effective Tips for Parents
It can be embarrassing to get a note or a phone call from your child’s teacher about their behavioural problems in school. Whether he said something nasty to a fellow student or got into a fight at recess, there’s no need to panic. Even the best of children slip up now and then.
How to Teach a Child to Behave in School?
If you find that your child has behavioural issues in school, there are several ways to break down the situation and understand and correct it. Here are some tips on how to work with a child with behaviour problems at school:
1. Establish Regular Communication with Your Child’s Teacher
The first step is assessing the situation to understand what may be driving your child toward bad behaviour. Is their misbehaviour an isolated incident or is he getting into trouble regularly? If it is the former, then monitor it for a few days to see if it resolves on its own. If it’s the latter, then get in touch with their teacher on a daily basis to learn about their behaviour.
Teachers generally have an established system of communication with the parents to keep them informed of children’s behaviour. Some may use smiley faces with colours such as green, yellow and red to indicate good and bad behaviour or some may prefer to write a quick note. Request them to send you this information on the child’s behaviour every day- and not only on the day the child misbehaves. Getting good smileys is a great morale booster for your child, and he will eagerly show you that he has had a good day at school.
2. Reward Good Behaviour
One of the best ways how to help your child behave in school is to reward and reinforce good behaviour. Appreciate him when he receives good remarks and reports from the teacher and celebrate his success to motivate him to keep it up. Setting up a reward system to act as an incentive for good behaviour is an idea that works very well. Establish daily behavioural goals and reward him when he reaches it. A simple goal would be to get 3 smileys from the teacher every day or five check marks for good behaviour.
His rewards need not cost you any money. Instead, a reward can be a set of privileges on a daily basis, such as extra video game time or anything else that he enjoys to the fullest. Daily rewards will help him stay motivated. You can offer him larger rewards on a weekly basis if he continues to achieve the daily goals for the whole week. A trip to his favourite play park or a play-date with his best friend is a good weekly reward.
3. Focus on the Positive
Going by the psychologists at the Child Mind Institute; instead of spending time correcting kids who misbehave, it’s more productive to praise kids who behave well. The point is to give more attention to good behaviour in children and less attention to disruptive behaviour in class. Since most children seek attention and praise, this approach will, over time, increase good behaviour.
For example, consider a child who blurts out a question without raising his hand or pokes another child ahead of him in the line. The teacher will find a child in the group who demonstrates good behaviour such as raising his hand before asking a question or follow line discipline and praise him for it.
4. Work with Them to Solve Problems
On days when your child is struggling with his behaviour, sit with him and come up with solutions on how he can do better the next day. Ask him what led to his behaviour and let him know you will help him to be better tomorrow. Talk with him calmly and ask for his inputs that might help. Kids can sometimes explain what went wrong and the solutions are often simple. He may have become disruptive because he is bored and the solution would be a more challenging task.
Sometimes, children misbehave to cover up something. For example, if they are unable to perform a task, they would be disruptive as they would rather appear “bad” than “stupid”. So they’d tend to act out instead of asking for help. If your child isn’t ready to talk about things, don’t push him. You can postpone it to when he is having a good day.
5. Get Outside Help
When instances of your kid misbehaving at school continue despite your efforts to solve the problems, it’s a good time to consult a therapist for your child. Get recommendations for a therapist who is willing to work with your child without using the medicinal approach at first. Consult someone who can help the child deal with the emotional issues causing them to act out in school and work alongside their teacher to improve them.
With patience and strategic intervention, it is possible to correct misbehaving children.

Motherhood is the Most Beautiful Ornament That a Woman Wears
To my dearest baby, this is the journey of my pregnancy and the beautiful two months of your arrival and many more to come!
My Journey of Pregnancy
It was nine beautiful months of my journey with you in my womb and I was awaiting your arrival. This journey of pregnancy transformed me into a more strong, positive, and confident woman - it gave birth to a mother in me. You are such a beautiful soul, you have taught me to manage you in the toughest of situations. Despite my health going down; despite the physical changes I was going through; despite those rare mood swings I carried, I always enjoyed the times when you were inside me. I hope we will carry this bond once you are out of my womb and stay happy for the rest of your life. I would also thank your dad who took utmost care of me every single moment. It was like - we were both pregnant. He understood my mood swings and tried to cherish me. He was just waiting to hold you in his arms and feel your gentle touch. We just wanted you to be healthy and safe. We want you to stay healthy throughout your life. We decided to teach you the best of things. And then you came into our lives.
You are the magical wand I received.
Let's make the most beautiful moments together,
Let's learn all new things and explore this beautiful world together.
Your Beautiful First Month
I can't believe it has been a month since you stepped into our world. Time went so fast. It still flashes in my mind, the way you arrived from my womb and cried out, in a way saying, "momma, here I am, your cute little dream who has arrived safely. The first kiss, your little fingers, your tender skin, your soft lips, your cute little eyes, your happy smile.. everything was new for us. You were the most awaited soul of the family. This day a month ago was the most memorable and happiest day for our family. A very happy first month and hope to have all smiles on ur face in the days to come.
Your Beautiful Second Month
It has been two months now since your arrival. You turn every day into a magical moment. I am not sure how the last 30 days passed. Watching you grow is a feast for my eyes. The way you start our day with your sparkling smiles; the way you respond to our talks with your tiny legs doing all gymnastics brighten our days. Your strong fists resisting grandma's massages; your video conversations with your dad; your silent talks with ur mama; your playful acts with your grandpas; your sweet dream grins and bad dream cries - everything you do seems new to me and puts me in awe. How can my tiny soul do so many intelligent things? How can a cry be just a means of communication for a baby to express everything he wants? Sometimes, it is such a challenging task for a mom to understand what her baby needs. This is how nature is designed by God. Your anger, your hunger, your pain and even your discomfort - I am trying to understand your cries. I hope I am doing all that you need. You are the best gift I received and I promise I will raise you in the best possible way.
We have many more moments to celebrate. In the end, I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to carry a beautiful soul like you in my womb. I love you to the moon and back my baby.

What Do Fit People Do That You Must Too
1. Love Your Body
It's natural to feel insecure of your body, thanks to a sea of fashion magazine covers featuring hot women. But remember one thing, we're all different and therefore we all have different body types. You can be perfectly fit on the inside and yet not have the ideal figure on the outside. This doesn't mean you're any less than someone who does have the ideal figure. In fact, you may be fitter than them! Love your body. Period.
2. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise
If you want to pick up one healthy habit of people who always stay fit, pick this one up. Find a way to love working out. Look forward to it. Let it become therapeutic for you. Allow your training to become one of the best parts of your day. Once you've done so, fitness will never leave your life.

Yes, it's a total win-win situation and one of the most important healthy habits of those fitter than you.
4. Have a 'Cheat Day'
Cheat days are the days you live for, the days you can eat anything you want to. Practicing physical fitness takes immense discipline and will-power. But then, all this can often be frustrating. This is when a 'cheat day' comes in handy. Pick one day of the week when you get to splurge on any kind of food - from warm, freshly baked brownies to chocolate tarts. Whatever you want. These cheat days will pamper your sweet tooth and keep you from going overboard with an over-curated diet.
5. Have a Wholesome Breakfast
Staying skinny doesn't mean skipping your meals, especially breakfast. What do fit people do? They find a version of breakfast that's healthy yet suitable for their food needs. A healthy and wholesome breakfast means adequate energy to go through your day and regular workout too.
Fitness can take some time to incorporate itself into your lifestyle permanently. But once you use these techniques, you'll fall into the habits of those who always stay fit. Fitness will then not be a challenge but a reality! Read more

Indian Researchers Find Miraculous Idea to Save Lives of Preemie and Low Birth Weight Babies
Every year in India, 8 million babies are born prematurely and have low birth weight. These babies face a great challenge for survival in their early years – a challenge they have to fight with their gentle, delicate body. Of all the risks such babies face immediately after birth, the biggest is this: losing their body heat. Hypothermia, a condition where body temperatures fall below 36.5C or 97.7 F, can be near fatal for your preemie baby and bring on asphyxia, sepsis or even pneumonia. Our country continues to lose babies to hypothermia every year – indeed we have the highest number of infant deaths caused by premature birth – with the doctors and parents failing to keep them warm enough…
A prematurely born baby, or a baby whose birth weight is lower than normal standards, requires intensive care for several months after birth. During this period, your baby may be kept away from you in the NICU where he is placed in an incubator and is under observation day in and day out. When your baby is finally discharged from the hospital and you take him home, unfortunately, the risks are far from over. Babies are still susceptible to infection and illness – and to getting too cold. Of all the care new mothers administer to their babies, the most important thing is to maintain a newborn’s body temperature. This is trickier than it sounds, as you may take your baby’s temperature now and it may fall in the next few minutes – something you can easily overlook. Every moment is crucial for your newborn, and every moment that is unsupervised is a potential risk. But how can you possibly keep track of his body heat every second of the day, while at home?
Bangalore Team Creates a Baby Bracelet to Save Lives
It is precisely this challenge that a Bangalore-based startup called Bempu has set out to resolve. They have created a baby bracelet that constantly monitors a baby’s temperature and immediately sounds an alert if it goes too high or too low. These bracelets are powered by a battery that runs for a month, which is the most critical period for newborns. Medical professionals have received this invention with cheer and enthusiasm as it provides a targeted solution to keep babies monitored and healthy. Doctors across the country have started using the Bempu bracelet while babies are in the NICU. They have also started prescribing them for babies who are being discharged so they can live risk-free at home.
“New mothers are very worried about whether their babies are too warm or too cold. The bracelets are better than a thermometer because they are continuously monitoring the baby’s temperature. (With a thermometer) Say you take the baby’s temperature now, it can fall after 30 minutes, and you may not notice!”
- Dr Sanjay Wazir, Director, NICU, Gurgaon Hospital
Currently, the Bempu team is running a pilot scheme in Rajasthan, with the aim to make these bracelets a free handout for all babies being discharged from government hospitals. This is especially important as several government hospitals have a chaotic and under-staffed atmosphere – something that tremendously aggravates the risk for preemie and low weight babies who need constant monitoring. Moreover, many parents cannot afford to keep their baby in these hospitals for a long period as they need to travel back to their village for work. Even though they may realize that their baby needs the extra care, and want to do their best, the decision is affected by several factors, money and daily wages being an important one.
“The beds are always filled, the entire family is in the waiting room every day, there are often three babies in one incubator, where there should be only one. There’s a lack of staff, the nurses are overworked, running around with competing priorities. In all that, its hard to manage all these high-risk babies.”
How to Identify and Lower Your Baby’s Risk of Hypothermia
While these bracelets are powerful devices to regulate your baby’s temperature and seek medical help if something goes wrong, it is important to also train yourself in this regard. If your baby shows lower energy levels than usual, has reddish and cold skin, is not feeding well, or has a cool feeling in the abdomen, it is possible that he is going through an episode of hypothermia. As mom to preemie or low weight baby, you need to be especially careful to protect your baby from hypothermia and know exactly what to do if the temperature is too low or too high:
Make sure your baby is well covered to prevent loss of heat but without overbundling him. Keep all potential choking hazards or things that could induce suffocation (loose blankets, pillows) far away from his bed
Keep your baby’s room temperature comfortably warm, using a thermostat and a humidifier if needed
Your baby may need the support of an incubator again in cases of severe hypothermia. You must call an ambulance at the earliest to get your baby under medical supervision
Cheers to the team at Bempu for coming up with something so thoughtful and effective for the children in India and across the world. If your baby was born under high risk conditions, we recommend you have a talk with your doctor and consider a method like this to keep your baby’s temperature regulated. Your little darling is very sensitive for the first few years of his life, and you must extend to him all the care you possibly can. Read more
