Baby Sneezing - Reasons and When to Worry
Does your little one sneeze a lot? If yes, then you must be thinking that she is sick. Her every sneeze or sniffle might make you wonder that something is wrong with your baby. But you need not worry if your little one is sneezing too much. Read on to know why your newborn sneezes so much and what you can do about it.
Is it Normal for a Newborn to Sneeze?
If your newborn sneezes a lot, you should be reassured that her body is working just fine. Sneezing is a healthy action and you should be happy to see your baby sneezing. It is a reflex action controlled by the nervous system which helps clear the dust particles in the nasal passage or to remove congestion in the respiratory system. The air we inhale is filled with dust particles, chemicals, pollutants, germs, and other impurities which needs to be cleaned through sneezing. So, if your 2-month-old baby is coughing and sneezing but does not have a fever or other symptoms, you need not worry.
Instead of worrying about the frequent sneezes, you should be happy that your baby's body is reacting in a natural way. Sneezing will help clear the dust particles and impurities clogged in the tiny nasal passage of your baby and keep the flow of air in and out of her nasal passage in a natural way.
Why Does Your Baby Sneeze So Much?
All newborns have a different pattern of breathing. For instance, some babies may take rapid short spurts of air and then slowly steady their breathing. So it will take your little one a while to master the art of breathing normally. Sneezing is a common phenomenon in newborns but there are quite a few reasons why she might be sneezing a lot.
1. To Clear Impurities in the Nose
Newborns usually breathe through their nose and it takes them around 3-4 months to breathe through their mouth. It is difficult for them to make a sudden transition from nose breathing to mouth breathing. Hence, babies need to sneeze quite often to clear their nose and resume their normal breathing pattern.
2. Due to a Tiny Nose
Newborns have tiny noses, and tiny noses mean tiny nasal passage. Your little bundle of joy's cute tiny nose also has a narrow nasal passage which can easily attract dust particles from the atmosphere. Hence, your baby may sneeze to clear his nasal pathway.
3. To Unclog a Blocked Nostril
Babies often suffer from a clogged nostril. When you breastfeed your baby, her tiny nostrils may get pressed or flattened (as she might be clinging to you). This may cause a temporary block in her nostrils which then gets unclogged by sneezing.
4. Due to the Presence of Irritants in the Air
The irritants like cigarette smoke, strong cologne or perfumes, dust particles, etc., present in the air can also make your baby sneeze. Babies also vomit milk; if your little one vomits milk, it can enter her nostril and cause irritation and sneezing. Since your little one can't snort or sniff to get rid of the impurities, she may eventually have to sneeze. In order to prevent this, you can keep your house ventilated. You can either install exhaust fans in your house or keep the windows open frequently for better air circulation.
5. Due to Fever or Illness
Sneezing in babies can also be a sign of a cold. The most common symptoms of cold include upper tract respiratory infections, sneezing, coughing, and nasal discharge. Due to an immature immune system, your baby may catch a cold from other members of the family, if they have a cold. So as a parent, you must ensure that anyone who takes the baby in their arms washes their hands properly and uses a sanitizer if needed before holding the baby. Alternatively, you can also use anti-histamines as per the doctor's prescription. Also, once infected with cold, immediate treatment is required to prevent severe infection.
6. Due to the Dryness in the Air
As your little one has a tiny nasal passage, the mucus in her nose may dry easily. You may witness this more in the winter months or at dry places or in air-conditioned rooms. As a result, she may sneeze more often. In order to avoid this, you can use make her use a vaporizer - it will help lower nasal dryness.
7. Due to Some Allergy
Hay fever can also be one of the causes if your baby is sneezing frequently. Also known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever causes nasal congestion. The impure particles in the atmosphere cause allergic reactions which lead to hay fever. It can also occur due to dust, insect bites, or animal hair. This can be avoided by protecting babies from foreign particles and allergies. Since it is not practically possible to do so, you may also use anti-histamines as per doctor's prescriptions.
When to Consult a Doctor
Babies sneeze quite frequently in a day and at times in a row which is again very normal. But if your baby has a runny nose and is sneezing all the time and shows symptoms of a cough and fever, then you should consult your baby's paediatrician immediately. Also, if your baby suffers from the following symptoms then she will require immediate medical attention:
If she is breathing very fast or is panting for breath, it means she is finding it difficult to breathe. Consult a doctor soon.
Forceful chest movements and straining while breathing is also a sign of illness and difficulty in breathing. If your baby has difficulty breathing, take her to a doctor.
If your baby seems to eat less than she used to before and also feels less energetic then take her to a doctor and get a checkup done.
If your baby sleeps more than the usual 8-10 hours of a day and has low energy levels you must consult your doctor immediately.
Some other common signs which newborn babies experience include hiccups and rattling noises while sleeping and breathing, etc. Some babies even make funny noises while sleeping which can also be considered as baby snores. But remember there is no reason to panic till you witness some very serious signs of illness. Regular doctor visits and detailed discussion regarding the baby breathing patterns will put your mind at ease.
Newborns sneeze all the time and it is normal. However, if it is accompanied by a runny nose and fever, then your little one might be sick. Take her to a doctor and get her checked. Take care of your little one and she will be fine!

Best Sleeping Positions during Pregnancy
A sound sleep is what all pregnant women crave, but it is often difficult to get. Sleep disturbances are not very uncommon during pregnancy, and almost all pregnant women face these sleep issues, especially as the pregnancy advances past the first trimester.
During pregnancy, getting a comfortable night’s sleep gets harder than ever due to anxiety, hormonal fluctuations, and most importantly, the physical changes. The size of your growing belly, aching back, swelling in the legs, and the urge to empty your increasingly sensitive bladder make it inconvenient to sleep comfortably in your regular sleeping position like sleeping on your back. As pregnancy progresses to the second trimester, you may find it harder to find a comfortable sleeping position. In this situation, it is natural to get worried and have questions such as how to sleep during pregnancy to get a sound sleep and whether sleeping on back in pregnancy is safe.
A good night’s sleep is essential for pregnant women. As per experts, during pregnancy, the best sleeping position is to sleep on your left side which is ideal for you as well as your baby-to-be. This position allows maximum blood flow and increases the nutrient absorption to your placenta and your baby. Sleeping on your side enhances kidney function too which aids in the elimination of waste products and reduces swelling in your feet, ankles, and hands.

Why Normal Sleeping Positions Are Uncomfortable In Pregnancy?
The usual sleeping positions, like sleeping on your belly or on your back, will get difficult as pregnancy progresses to the second and third trimesters. This is because of the discomfort caused by the increasing size of the abdomen, back pain, shortness of breath and heartburn.
What Is The Correct Sleeping Position?
During pregnancy, the correct position to sleep, without a doubt, would be to sleep on your side and that too on your left side. The largest vein supplying blood to the heart is located on the right side, so sleeping on your left side is recommended. The ideal position is to lie on your left side with knees bent and pillows between your legs.
Experts advise that keeping a pillow behind your back and under your belly will give you optimal sleep with less strain. It is recommended to wear loose and comfortable clothing in a breathable fabric like cotton while sleeping.
Which Sleeping Position To Avoid While Pregnant
Sleeping on your back or on your stomach should be avoided during pregnancy as it can lead to many health issues, as explained below:
While sleeping on back during pregnancy, your growing uterus presses onto your spine, the muscles of your back, your intestines, and also your blood vessels, especially the inferior vena cava (this is the vein which brings blood back from your lower body up to your heart). This can decrease the blood circulation to your heart and to the foetus, hindering the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the baby. This interference with circulation can also lead to hypotension (low blood pressure) and swelling.
In addition to circulation problems, back sleeping can aggravate backaches and contribute to the development of haemorrhoids, varicose veins, and shortness of breath. It can also make digestion less efficient.
As the pregnancy progresses, the increasing size of the abdomen and tenderness in the breasts make it almost impossible to sleep on your stomach.
Tips To Be Comfortable While Sleeping
Listed below are a few other positioning tips for safe and comfortable sleep during pregnancy.
Keeping your legs and knees bent with a pillow between your legs and another pillow behind your back will give more belly and back support.
If you experience heartburn, it is very helpful to lie on your back almost in a half-seated position, with some soft fluffy pillows propped up behind you.
For relief from back pain, sleeping on your side with a pillow under your abdomen will help.
In case you are experiencing shortness of breath in the later stages of pregnancy, try lying on your side and put a pillow under your side to raise your chest.
Staying in one position throughout the night is not comfortable, so shifting from side to side while favouring the left side is the best solution for a cosy sleep. If you wake up on your back or on your tummy in the middle of the night, do not panic. Just turn onto either of the sides and go back to sleep.
Pregnant women are required to take several precautions and bring about necessary changes in their lifestyle for a smooth pregnancy. Trying these new sleeping positions is just one aspect of those changes. It is normal to feel uncomfortable for a few nights or even a few weeks as the body is used to random sleeping positions. Rest assured that this will become easier as the pregnancy progresses. Give some time to your mind and body, and you will soon be able to adjust to the new positions. Read more

So, would-be moms, take your footwear fashion to a different level quite effortlessly.
As much as you'd like to wear them, stilettos and platform heels aren't exactly the best footwear choices when pregnant. It gets increasingly difficult to walk in them as you enter your second and third trimesters since your feet start to swell, and you get heavier. Thankfully, there are other shoes that are just as fashionable and are a lot comfier. Here's a look at five of the best maternity footwear you can get.
Types of Pregnancy Footwear
1. Thong Flats
Easy to slip on and a dream to style, thong flats are a must-have footwear for pregnant ladies. The open design is very ventilating and leaves your toes free to wiggle. Get a pair of simple black flats with braided straps to wear on a day-to-day basis. For special occasions, you can try an embellished pair with stone and bead details.
2. Ballerina Shoes
Ballerina flats are another must-have in your shoe collection. They go with just about anything! You can wear them with long, flowing dresses just as easily as you can with salwar kameez and pantsuits. Just pick designs according to the occasion. You can go for a beige pair with gold-toned details to pep up your everyday attire, and opt for attractive navy cap-toe ballerinas to smarten up your outfit when you need to go somewhere special.
3. Low-heeled Wedges
A pretty pair of strappy wedges is just the thing to lend oodles of style to a summery cotton dress. Choose a low-heeled pair that's easy on your feet. You can also wear it with wide-legged pants and a cool shirt. Wedges with jute heels are the ideal pregnancy shoes for daytime wear and casual evening dates. You can try wedges with buckles and studs if you're looking for dressier designs.
4. Kitten Heels
Women who can't do without heels but don't want to wear anything higher than two inches will find kitten heels to be perfect. They're fabulous for special occasions and can put a stylish spin on everyday maxi dresses and sarees too. Choose between peep-toes and full fronts to suit your mood.
5. Espadrilles
The breathable cotton uppers of espadrilles make them the top picks for wearing on warm, balmy days. How about a sunny yellow pair to go with the weather? It could play up a solid-coloured white dress and a crocheted shrug. You could try two-toned pairs, nautical-themed striped ones, or ones with Aztec prints too.
Pregnancy is an exciting time to try out new fashion. You may not be able to wear stilettos, but you can rock pregnancy footwear like flats and kitten heels just as easily. Enjoy experimenting and putting together fashionable outfits that speak of your style sense. Read more

My Journey of Pregnancy: A Bliss!
'Sharing is Caring' - A line from infant rhymes is not just a line but more of a fact. Mindfully, the journey from the first to the last day before delivery is full of challenges and different from others.
In my first trimester, I felt fragile but didn't have any prominent signs as I have heard that you vomit and feel nauseous. But the same was not with me.
In the second trimester, it was pretty challenging. I used to vomit after every meal. Mostly, when I had brinjal or bottle gourd. I never felt like eating sour and savory. I liked to eat potatoes and milk. I took some pepsin syrup to digest food and to avoid the feeling of vomiting. I took a folic acid tablet, Curlon, fatty acid, and Omega 3 tablets every day. My gynecologist had also prescribed me an amino acid sachet to maintain fluid in the uterus, which I think was below a certain level. I was also given hormone injections weekly for upto 24 weeks.
In my third trimester, I was very chilled; all my aversions were gone away. I enjoyed it and started preparing my bag for the hospital and surfing online, watching needful videos, always thinking positive and passing positive vibes. My tummy was growing, and I loved it. I ate everything I liked and wanted to. Luckily my weight didn't increase, and I kept enjoying family time.
My doctor had given me calcium and iron tablets. She also recommended a women's energy drink as my leg used to pain a lot.
I started getting kicks and turns at higher rates than usual. At night, the kicks were so hard that I couldn't sleep. However, internally I was happy. If you are pregnant or have gone through the journey of pregnancy, I'm sure this story is highly relatable to you!
