12 Wrong Sleeping Habits That Can Harm Your Baby
There's nothing more beautiful and peaceful than watching your baby sleep. She has a smile on her face, and what look like signs of a dream already. But is your precious darling really sleeping well? Is it possible that she is learning bad sleeping habits that can affect her health as she grows up?
Bringing up a child is a full-time, strenuous affair, and sleep-time is one of the major factors that make it thus! Newborn not sleeping at night, baby waking up constantly, or baby refusing to fall asleep are just some of the common problems we face as parents.
12 Bad Sleeping Habits That Are Not Good for Your Babies
In an effort to end these baby sleep problems, we often resort to practices that are actually unhealthy. Have you been making any of these sleeping mistakes with your child?
1. Every Room Is Your Baby's Bedroom
Put together a restless baby with an exhausted mother and what do you get? Bedrooms all over the place! Your baby may fall asleep in his stroller, the car, your sofa, or even his high chair. Sleeping in unfamiliar environments does little to soothe his nerves, and also dilutes his mental association of a bedroom with relaxation. This makes it one of the baby bad sleeping habits you should avoid.
Solution: Difficult as it will be at first, strive to stick to a familiar bedroom for your baby. This is the space he takes his day naps in, and this is where you hope he will sleep through the night.
2. Sleep Schedules Change Every Day
Baby sleep schedule? Babies don't need to have sleep schedules – or do they? Just as with adults, kids also need to have a more or less consistent sleep schedule. This lets them feel drowsy at around the same time day after day. At the heart of most nap-time struggle is inconsistency – putting your baby to bed too early when she's in the mood to play, or too late when she's already more tired than she should be.
Solution: While some flexibility in baby sleep cycles is defninitely okay, try and keep the variation as low as possible.

3. You Don't Follow A Bedtime Routine
Babies are such tiny people; why do they need a bedtime routine to settle down? Well, turns out good sleeping habits for babies are very important for overall health and development! Following a routine before going to bed everyday helps babies calm down and relax, thus making things easier for themselves as well as Mamma in the long run.
Solution: This can be as simple as giving him a warm bath, playing a lullaby in the background and dimming the lights. Skipping this can make your baby restless and affect the quality of his sleep through the night.
4. You Miss Out on Her Body's Sleep Cues
Babies are different from adults in many ways – their sleep timings and habits included. When babies feel drowsy and tired, they display a number of cues which you need to track.
Solution: Is your baby rubbing his eyes, whining or being restless for no apparent reason? Chances are he wants to nap. Missing these cues means your baby's natural sleep window has passed, and his body will now send out cortisol - a stress-related hormone that can overstimulate him!
5. Her Bed Is Too Big for Her
Your baby is definitely growing up fast but is she big enough to sleep in that large bed yet? Making the transition too early affects their sleep and may even be dangerous, especially if they topple over trying to be little explorers!
Solution: Well, until she can climb out of her crib by herself, probably not. Many kids are not ready for a big bed until around two years of age.
6. She's Staying Up Late but Waking Up Early
How does that work? Babies don't operate like us where staying up late is concerned; their internal clock wakes them up in the morning all the same. This means that if you let your baby go to sleep late, she is simply going to be too tired the next day.
Solution: If she has been waking the whole household in the wee hours of the morning, try making bed-time an hour or so earlier. If you're wondering just how much sleep she needs, this bedtime chart for children will be able to help you. Use it to help form health baby sleeping habits.
7. You Are Co-Sleeping Because There's No Other Choice
What can you do when your baby simply refuses to fall asleep on her own, even after you've tried every conceivable way to help her? If you have been practising reactive co-sleeping, or sleeping together out of compulsion, you are giving in to a sleep crutch.
Solution: Hang in there, soothe your baby, and make sure he is drowsy when he goes to bed. She will eventually be just fine.
8. Your Baby Is Dependent on Sleep Crutches
How do you put your baby to sleep? Most moms engage in rocking, swinging, singing a lullaby, or giving a gentle back massage. While these are understandably your go-to solutions in the middle of the night, what if they are becoming sleep crutches for your baby? Very soon, your baby may be unable to go to sleep without them, and never learn to self soothe when they wake up.
Solution: Baby sleep patterns by age will change, and what you need to do is ensure your little one doesn't fall asleep to these behaviours.
9. You Eventually Give In to Her Crying
Your baby has woken up and she is crying her heart out! How can you not get up to comfort her and put her to sleep again? Of course you must. But alongside, you need to ensure that this doesn't become a sleep crutch.
Solution: If you decide to give her some time and then get up to comfort her, she understands that Mamma will finally arrive!
10. Mom and Dad Don't Share Sleep Time Roles
Regulating your child's sleep patterns is no child's play! The ultimate goal is to make sure your baby's sleeping habits are in order, and that she's slowly learning to soothe herself to sleep on her own.
Solution: It is absolutely essential for you and your husband to share roles here– say, deciding who will rock the baby to sleep and who will get up at midnight every day of the week!
11. You're Relying Too Much on Night-time Feedings
Many moms believe– and observe – that nursing seems to be the only way to get their baby to sleep. This need not be the case. Babies often look to feed because they know you're available and who ever said no to milk?
Solution: Check with your paediatrician on when you can discontinue feeding at night, and start working on this right away.
12. You Take Her Erratic Sleep for Granted
This is probably the most widely held sleeping mistake that nobody ever fails to perpetuate! While a new baby is going to take time to settle into a sleeping pattern, this doesn't mean you will have to go without sleep until she's a toddler!
Solution: The key is to be patience and keep working on embedding the right habits in your child. It will happen just when you are thinking of giving up.
Remember - healthy sleep habits = happy baby!

World Milk Day 2019 – Date, Significance and Activities
Milk has always been a healthy drink because of the high range of nutrients in it. It is the primary source of nutrition before infant mammals can digest any other types of food. Every year, World Milk Day is celebrated to publicise the activities that are related to milk and milk producing industries around the world.
What Is World Milk Day and When It Is Celebrated?
Every year, World Milk Day is celebrated on June 1. This day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to recognise the significance of milk as a global food. It was first observed on June 1, 2001. This day intends to bring attention to all the activities that are related to the milk industry. Since there is an increase in the demands of dairy production, fields related to this such as dairy education, veterinary pharmaceuticals, research, and cattle food supply are also benefited. There are so many schemes in India like Intensive Dairy Development programme, Dairy Venture Capital Fund, and Strengthening Infrastructure for Quality and Clean Milk Production that have made India become the #1 country for milk production in the word. This is why the world milk day in India is very famous.
History and Significance of World Milk Day
The importance of this day is to increase public awareness about every aspect of natural milk such as the origin, nutritional value of milk and its products, and its economic importance throughout the world. It is celebrated in many countries like Columbia, Malaysia, Germany, Romania, USA, UAE, etc. Milk is at the centre throughout this day. The International Dairy Federation launches a variety of promotional activities describing the significance of milk as an amazing addition for a healthy and balanced diet on its website online. So, many members from varied health organisations work together and take part in the celebration to spread the message of milk to the public with the help of different promotional activities throughout the day.
World Milk Day has had an impact on the population and helped them understand the reality of milk. Milk is an amazing source of many healthy nutrients like magnesium, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin A, folates, vitamin D, protein, healthy fats, etc. It provides instant energy to the body as it contains good quality proteins including non-essential and essential amino acids and fatty acids.
The different World Milk Day themes over the years were:
The theme for 2012 - “Drink Fresh Milk, Body Fit, Smart Brain”
The theme for 2013 - “Milk for Health and Prosperity of Southeast Asian region”
The theme for 2014 - “Milk is the First Food for Human” and “World Class Nutrition”
The theme for 2015 - “Milk is the First Food for Human”
The theme for 2016 - “Raise a Glass”
The theme for 2017 - “Economic Development, Livelihoods, Nutrition”
The theme for 2018 - “Drink Move Be Strong”
Different World Milk Day Activities
This day is celebrated by the association members on an international and national level to convey the message through many promotional activities. Press releases, news, articles, etc. are published to highlight the health benefits and nutritional value among the consumers. On a national level, free milk camps are organised, engaging the local celebrities to give out free milk packets to children. Various other programs are also conducted like quiz competitions, discussions, essay writing, sports activities, etc. by schools, colleges, universities, and other such educational institutions to encourage students.
World Milk Day is the best opportunity for us to think about the health and nutrition of milk. It is a natural source rich in calcium which promotes strong bones and protein which is good for healthy muscles and hunger-busting.

These 6 Things Can Cause Serious Injuries To New Mothers. Please Be Careful!
Being a new mother comes with an abundance of joy and happy experiences. But let's face it - motherhood can also be extremely hard on a mother's body. A slight bend to pick up a toy from the floor can keep you glued to your bed for the next 3 days! What may begin as a minor sprain or an ache can turn into major injuries. Everyday activities of a mom like breastfeeding or picking the baby up can cause sudden jerks and strains to the muscles, joints and tendons. If you are not careful enough, this can result in serious accidents, and may also mean you are unable to look after your baby as well as you'd like.
A mother's body goes through a series of changes, right from the time of conception. Her body just doesn't remain the same anymore. Pregnancy and post-delivery changes can cause an overall impact on your bones and muscles as well, even though you may think these changes are just 'hormonal'. For example, changes in hormones during pregnancy can loosen the tissue around your joints, permitting the pelvis to accommodate the baby before and during delivery. This slackness of the muscles remains for a while even post-delivery and can take a toll on your overall abdominal and pelvic muscle activity too.
Studies suggest that any repetitive pain or strains affect more than just a person's body. In case of mothers,if these pains are untreated, they can even lead to emotional stress and postpartum depression.
Here are 6 activities that you MUST guard against as a new mother, and preventive measures you should take to avoid injury.
1. Carrying/Picking Your Baby in an Awkward Manner
If you do not pay attention to your posture when you pick your baby up, you are potentially risking a back strain. It takes only a single move (repeated over a course of time, of course) to result into a bad posture and weak core muscles. Also, whenever you exert your back, the disk between the vertebrae along with the muscles and the ligament areas can also suffer strain.
What should you do to avoid this?
Whenever you need to lift your baby or pick up a toy from the ground, ensure you bend your knees and not your torso. Hold your baby close to your belly button whenever you are ready to stand up. Bending the torso puts the spinal area at risk for an injury.
The next best thing is to take plenty of rest whenever you experience a slight discomfort in your back. Also, a cold or a hot pack can come to the rescue.

2. Supporting Your Baby with a Bent Wrist
This is something most mothers do without realising the effect it can actually have on them. The wrist is a particularly tender and a sensitive area and actions like rotating and making a fist can actually hurt more than you know!Wrist inflammation isn't a rare occurrence and can be very painful for many women.
What should you do to avoid this?
Always hold your baby in a fashion that you keep your hand and wrist in the same line. This will typically help bend your wrist to hold your baby's head.
Whenever possible, lift your baby with both arms or simply take help of a baby carrier if you need to take them for a walk/strolls.
While pushing a stroller, place your palms on top of the handles. This will help minimize the urge to bend your wrists.
3. Carrying Your Baby with a Bent Hip on One Side
Very rarely do we pay attention to our posture when we carry and hold our baby. Most of the times, mothers carry their baby on one hip and tilt their pelvis. However, doing so for a prolonged period can cause severe discomfort.
What should you do to avoid this?
Hold your baby with both arms as this will enable distribution of body weight equally on both legs.
Also, switch sides regularly instead of holding the baby on just one side.
4. Hunching While Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is perhaps one of the most frequently carried out activities as a new mom! Many new mothers complain about a strained shoulder and neck muscles at this time. However, they overlook the root cause of it. When you push your neck forward for hours together, it can strain the neck and shoulder muscles resulting into wear and tear.
What should you do to avoid this?
Whenever you feed your baby, keep looking upwards time to time and also engage in some neck rolling stretches.
Also, use a footstool and a pillow to raise your baby while nursing and keep your arms free to ensure you aren't bearing your baby's weight. This will provide rest to your arms and shoulders.
5. Not Paying Enough Attention to Your Baby's Toys and Nails
This is important not just for hygiene purposes. Paying special attention towards the length of your baby's nails and the toys he/she plays with can also ensure YOUR safety! There have been many instances in which a simple playful act of throwing a toy in the air has ended up hurting the mother's eye.Your baby's nails too can hurt your - or his - eyes, if not clipped in time.
What should you do to avoid this?
Ensure your baby's nails are clipped short all the time. Their scratches can be as painful as paper cuts! Use this guide to cut your baby's nails without causing him any pain
Also, make sure you only buy toys that have soft edges and are devoid of any metal or sharp objects.
6. Baby Tantrums Can Result In Accidents Too!
As bizarre as it may sound, your baby's persistence and mood swings can be quite dangerous for you! And what's worse is that you wouldn't know when to expect it either. When you refuse something, kids tend to throw a full blown tantrum that includes throwing things at you or grabbing you, leaving painful marks and bruises.Mothers in many cases end up getting physically hurt.
What should you do to avoid this?
Distraction is the key. Whenever your baby or toddler throws a tantrum, distract them with something that would catch their attention and fancy instead. Well, this will ensure your safety too!
You can also try some of these real mom solutions to tame the tantrums. Other moms have found success with these tips that include playing soothing music and splashing about in the water.
Yes, being a new mommy is definitely awesome, but it can also be quite painful (literally speaking!). However, there are always ways of getting around. You cannot replace these experiences and activities, but following these precautions will help you minimise risk of injury.
Remember - you must take care of yourself first if you want to be fit and healthy to look after your baby! Read more

How to Interact with your Newborn Child?
Interacting with your newborn baby can be a challenging task. Since the only mode of communication for a newborn is crying, adults often feel at a loss when it comes to interacting with the babies. It is advised to keep your baby engaged, but too much of the stimulation is known to make the babies irritable. So, what should you do?
The ways you choose to interact with your baby will allow your baby to learn things such as communicating, socializing, moving and understanding the environment surrounding him. One of the major things your infant will learn during the initial weeks is associating with your touch, voice and face. Your role is to promote your baby’s learning by triggering off his senses in a positive way with gentle caresses, soothing sounds and friendly smiles. It is surprising to know that even at such a young age, infants love to explore and learn about their surroundings. An infant loves to observe faces, especially the face of his mother. The baby will connect with your voice and slowly start responding to it by appearing alert. In fact, when you start communicating with your baby, he will become familiar with your voice, associating it with comfort and warmth.
Rooting Reflex in Babies
This is another inherent quality in infants which allows them to respond to certain stimuli such as touch, voice and facial features of people surrounding a child which will contribute in their understanding of the world around. In response to stimuli, your baby may turn his head around, for example, when you touch the baby’s cheek, he will open his mouth and look at you, ready to eat. The baby will exhibit these reflexes when he is wide awake and highly stimulated. Once he has learnt his response the baby may respond accordingly and the next time you stroke his cheek while he is breastfeeding, the chances are that he will pause.
When to Interact with your Baby?
During the initial month, your infant will spend most of his time either drowsing or deep in sleep like an angel. It is only over a span of several weeks that a baby matures and remains alert for a longer period of time. It is vital for you to be able to recognize when your baby is ready to interact with you and when he wishes to be left alone. If the baby is awake but too active, like if he is flipping his arms, squirming or kicking his legs, chances are that he will not focus on you. If you try to gain his attention, he will get irritated and may start crying. This is a typical sign of over-stimulation. On the other hand, if he is awake and not too active, you can divert the baby’s attention towards you by trying to interact.
Suggested Activities to Interact with your Newborn
1. Give the Baby Company After a Good Night’s Sleep
It is a good idea to let the night be quiet and calm for the baby, and plan a fun-filled day of activity for him. It does not mean taking your child around for grocery tours. You can let family members mingle and spend time with the baby, talking and playing with him. Put a comfortable booster seat or high chair in the hub of your home and let the baby watch human movements. While you are watching the television, you can let your baby sit and enjoy with you. The baby may not understand what’s going on, but you can keep talking to him at short intervals and have a hearty laugh over some funny television time.
2. Silent Strolls for Your Baby
Let your little one enjoy precious moments of silence. When the day is bright but comfortably cool, take him along for a stroll in his comfortable stroller. You can also sing a soft and rhythmic song that he will start associating with you in the future. Let the baby gaze around and enjoy the serene environment.
3. Maintaining Physical Contact with Your Little One
It is important that you maintain physical touch with your baby. Skin-to-skin contact is essential to make your little one feel loved and cared for. Just hold the baby close to your body, giving him comfort and reassurance. You can also lie down and place the baby on your belly and rub his back gently.
4. Give the Baby Interesting Visuals to Get Amused
Your little one will not be able to differentiate between images just yet, but the idea to introduce the baby to different colours, sizes and shapes is great. Take your newborn to locations that are amusing and soothing. These playful methods will certainly have a positive impact on the cognitive development of your baby.
5. Try to Make It a Two-way Conversation
Try to invite some positive response from your little one. Sing nursery rhymes which involve using different sounds. These will entice your baby in learning different sounds and respond to them in his own manner.
Understand that your baby’s normal language development will have a broader range of alphabets and sounds, but it is best to start early. Your baby does enjoy hearing your voice, so go ahead and indulge in some gibberish and baby-talk! Read more
