15 Innovative and Fun Brain Games for Kids
Getting your kids to realise the value of stimulating the mind is always an uphill task. Watching them get absorbed in controversial cartoons such as Doraemon may make you cringe but what can you do? If you tell them to be productive, they simply protest in their adorable little voices claiming that if they have no homework, why should they do extra work? Now, this is a reasonable request and even the most authoritative moms would feel a tinge of pain. However, this doesn’t mean you resign yourself to having lost this battle or force them to do something they don’t want to do. The solution lies in getting your kids to stimulate their brains through fun activities in the form of games.
Importance of Brain Games for Kids
Brain games help stimulate the brain and make your child think in unconventional ways to solve a problem. Just like physical exercise, the brain needs its own form of stimulation to improve upon areas like analytical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. The best part is that kids are likely to be open to the idea of a game as compared to, say, reading books.
Challenging Brain Games for Children
1. Sudoku
This game is a sensational hit for all ages and is known to arrest the decline of brain function in older people. It involves a grid with some numbers inside them and the rest is empty. The aim of the game is to fill up all the missing numbers. While it looks deceptively simple, the catch is that you cannot repeat the same number in the same row or column. The defining feature of this game is that it challenges your child to think 3-4 steps ahead and can help in planning.
2. Blue Block
Blue Block is a mobile game that has an interesting backstory to keep your child engrossed. The objective is simple: to free the Blue Dragon by rearranging the blocks so that it can reach the exit. It teaches kids that brute force isn’t always an option and simple logic can make their actions effortless!
3. Colour Code, Master Mind and Guess the Code
Both the games have been clubbed together as they have similar objectives, that is, to figure out a random code. Hints are given to allow your child to deduce what the code might be. These games help your child to analyse the information provided and use it logically to figure out the code.
4. Memory
This game ranks high in the recommended brain games for kids as it helps improve the memory. The objective of the game is to uncover all the similarly paired flashcards on a grid. A maximum of two cards can be revealed simultaneously after which the picture inscribed on them is hidden. Only if the cards are similar will their picture side be shown permanently. In this way, your child must remember the correct location of the cards to uncover all of them. This game helps improve attention and focus of a child.
5. Brain Fitness
An addictive mobile game, Brain Fitness is an overall brain workout that helps exercise logic, attention, and retention of information.
6. Simply Smarter Kids
This game makes use of audiovisual cues which must be remembered in the correct sequence. It is designed to help develop and improve short-term as well as long-term memory. No parental supervision is required for this game.
7. Lumosity
This game has been scientifically designed by neuro-physical researchers for optimal brain function. It has over 60 tasks that test your child’s reaction time, memory, attention, flexibility and problem-solving skills. The user interface has been beautifully designed, fusing art and science into a fun-filled brain development game.
8. Puzzle
Puzzles are a good unsupervised activity as your child’s curiosity would keep them engaged with the game. They help in brain development as they build children's spatial reasoning as well as hand-eye coordination.
9. Word Hunt
This game incorporates flashcards with pictures and needs to be matched with the corresponding word that describes it. For instance, the flashcard may have a picture of a fish. Here, your child will have to choose the picture associated with the word fish, for example, water. The flashcards can be of different categories such as animals, flowers, household objects, etc. This game is great for children around 5 years of age who are still learning new words. It teaches them to remember names and also identify the words associated with the objects.
10. Find That Thing
While this game is similar to word hunt, the only difference is that it requires physical activity on your child's part. This game can best be played in an open area such as a park or playground. You take out the flashcard and your kid must then find the object which is mentioned on the flashcard. For example, if the word on the card is “Park Bench” your child will have to locate one in his surroundings. This game helps improve their comprehension too.
11. Maze
This simple game can be found in activity books, mobile apps and even in some parks. The gameplay is simple: find the path to the exit. This has numerous benefits for the child such as:
It helps in hand-eye coordination as your child needs to trace the path correctly.
It improves their problem-solving abilities by forcing them to think out of the box. If one approach fails, they adapt and find other possible routes to get to the other side.
12. Hide and Seek
It is one of the games played by kids all over the world. It helps children improve their analytical skills. For a young developing mind, it helps them distinguish a viable hiding spot from a bad one.
13. New Languages
Apart from learning their mother tongue, kids can be exposed to another regional language at home. Studies have shown that this helps stimulate their prefrontal cortex which is also linked to improved memory. Simply making your child sign up for a language class is not enough, however. While they may learn the language in the class, no doubt, it is important that they find a way to actually speak in it and practice it. For instance, if they are learning Punjabi, you can engage in activities like watching a Punjabi movie together, or listening to Punjabi songs, etc. to increase their exposure to the language. You may even ask them to interpret a movie or a song for you. While it is unlikely that they will give a flawless translation, it will boost their confidence and make them eager to learn.
14. Board Games
Games like Snakes 'n’ Ladders, Monopoly, Othello, and Chess are all good as they help you understand your child’s social skills. Is your child being patient and waiting for their turn? Does he cry and behave like a sore loser when he loses a game? You will observe these skills when you play along with them, and whenever needed, you can teach them to lose gracefully and win with humility.
15. Musical Numbers
Getting your kid to learn writing numbers can be a little difficult as they sometimes find it difficult to grasp abstract concepts. Musical numbers employ visual aids as well as music to make learning fun and interesting. First, set up Lego blocks of ascending numerical values across your child’s room. For example, you can place one Lego block in the middle of the room and two blocks near the bedside table. This can be done till the number 10, 15 or 20, depending on how many numbers you want your child to learn and the availability of Lego blocks. Next, set up a music system with your child’s favourite songs in a place nearby so that it is audible from the room. Then, start the music and dance with your kid like a crazy person; they’re bound to join in! Finally, stop the music and scream a number! This is when your child must run to the area of the room with the correct Lego blocks. This process can be repeated until they learn all the numbers. This game can be used to make them learn alphabets as well - simply substitute the Lego blocks with alphabet blocks.
Things to Remember While Playing Brain Games With Your Child
Children don't always respond well to brain games. Sometimes, they just want to have fun. Here are a few things you need to remember while introducing them to these brain games:
1. Be Patient With Your Child
The child may not understand the game at the first go, or might not like the game immediately. You may let him play another game and slowly introduce the new brain game after a few days.
2. Get More Participants
Sometimes, the number of participants can encourage your child to play a brain game. Create an atmosphere of fun with some lemonade and snacks and you are good to go.
3. Always Participate
At times, you will be tempted to leave your child alone to play a game and do something else. You can let him play alone once in a while, but if you continue doing so, your child might lose interest and do something else without you knowing. Your involvement is required for you to know how much your child is improving. So, ensure you always participate.
Playing brain-boosting games can help your child learn and improve existing skills without really knowing that he is learning. Your little one will become more creative, and he will try to find different ways to solve a problem. By playing these games, your kid will also be able to concentrate better, and you'll see a significant improvement in his observational and reasoning skills. To hone his other skills, get activity boxes designed for kids. By trying out the activities in these boxes, your kid will be able to nurture his other talents as well.
As parents, developing your child's brain is your responsibility. However, if you force your children to do something they don’t like, they may not put effort into it. Just try and make your kid read the newspaper and see what happens! The solution lies in finding games that your child responds well to and getting yourself involved as well.

How to Lose Weight While Breastfeeding Without Reducing Your Milk Supply?
Extra nourishment and lack of physical activity lead to the build-up of weight during pregnancy. After the delivery, shedding those extra kilos becomes a priority for most women. However, the next task at hand is to ensure that your baby gets all the necessary nutrition in the first few months after birth. In the initial months, the only source of nutrition for the baby is the mother’s breast milk. It is, thereby, very important for the mother to continue eating nutritious food and going on a diet is not an option.
Is It Safe if You Are Trying to Lose Weight While Breastfeeding?
A planned weight reduction program is safe even when you are breastfeeding. Having a sudden drop in weight is not recommended and a gradual, phased out decrease is ideal. The best way to reduce weight is by adopting a healthy lifestyle, consuming low-fat food, and following a moderate exercise routine on a daily basis. Breastfeeding also aids in stimulating weight loss, as the body will use your stored energy in fat to make milk for the baby.
Proper nursing combined with a balanced diet and exercise will help in the reduction of weight without having any impact on the quality or quantity of the milk to be fed to the baby. Breastfeeding and weight loss can go hand in hand.
When to Start Losing Weight While Breastfeeding?
Having a baby and managing your priorities during the first few weeks after delivery can be challenging, as your munchkin will need extra care. At this point in time, losing weight should not be worrying you. The excess weight has been put on over a period of nine to ten months and you should give it at least that much time to shed those extra kilos away.
You can wait for around six weeks after delivery to kick start your weight reduction regime. The initial six weeks can be considered as a transition period where the baby and the mother are trying to adapt to the changes in their life. It is important to focus on the baby at this time and not get distracted by any other activity.
Different Ways to Lose Weight When Breastfeeding
Weight reduction after pregnancy needs to be systematic and well planned. Given below are some tips on how to lose post-pregnancy weight fast while breastfeeding:
Adopt a moderate exercise routine: Start off with exercises which are not too taxing and heavy on the body. Develop an exercise routine that includes light walking for 20 to 30 minutes along with your baby. Increase the intensity of your exercises gradually. However, be cautious and do not burn too many calories while you are breastfeeding.
Do not cut down on food intake: Starving yourself might reduce your weight instantly, but it will also make you weak from the inside and reduce the production of milk. Consult your dietician and draw up the right diet that caters to your daily needs. This will ensure that you avoid unhealthy food and, in the process, do not put on weight.
Drink water: Drinking plenty of water is a good way to keep a tab on your weight. Water will aid in the digestion process and also remove toxins from the body. It is important to stay hydrated while you are breastfeeding. Water will help you do just that. It will also fill your tummy, thus, making you feel less hungry.
Breastfeed frequently: In order to produce milk, the body will use the stored energy in fats. Breastfeeding will burn a lot of calories and that is why it is important to maintain a good balance between exercise and food consumption.
Healthy Diet For Weight Loss
Following a good post-pregnancy weight loss plan while breastfeeding will ensure that the baby is not deprived of any essential nutrition and, at the same time, you are on track for weight reduction.
1. Eat Frequent, Smaller Meals
Having smaller meals at regular intervals will keep your tummy full and help you avoid unnecessary cravings during the intervals between meals. Ensure that your meals are high on nutrition. Avoid junk and fried food completely.
2. Eat Nutritious Foods
Have a healthy mix of food items in your diet plan. Given below are the ideal group of items that you should have in your daily diet.
Healthy foods
Description
Carbs and proteins
Include a good mix of food rich in carbohydrates and proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of a cell and very important for the growth and development of a child. Carbohydrates give energy to the body to carry out daily activities.
Healthy fats
Consumption of healthy fats is important to nourish the body. Avoid trans-fats and saturated fats consumption and include mono-saturated and polyunsaturated fat foods in your diet.
Food high on iron and vitamin C
Food items like leafy vegetables, whole grain, dried fruits and beans are a good source of iron. Citrus fruits, tomato, strawberry and bell peppers are high on vitamin C. Consumption of these food items will provide stability to the body, improve immunity, help lose weight and provide nutrition to the child.
Fish
Omega 3 fatty acid help in development of eyes and brain and fish is a great source of this mineral.
Whole foods
Fiber rich food items such as fruits and vegetables should form an important part of your over all diet.
3. Consume Vitamin Supplements Daily
Vitamins help the body to absorb calcium and reduce the risk of developing ailments such as blood pressure and diabetes. Vitamins also boost immunity and protect against seasonal diseases such as cold and cough.
4. Avoid the Following Foods
The following foods items must be avoided while you are breastfeeding:
Spicy food. This might upset the child’s stomach
Junk food and food with trans or saturated fat
Caffeinated drinks
Consumption of alcohol
Avoid vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower
Consult your doctor or dietician before adding any food item to your diet plan.
It can be challenging to lose weight after delivery. It is important to have patience and exercise self-control while trying to shed weight. It is not healthy to go on a crash diet and try to lose weight instantly. This will not only affect your health adversely, but will also have an impact on the baby’s health. Instead, make a plan on how to gradually decrease your weight and stick to the plan.

Fun With the Fish: What you Must Do With Kids at the Aquarium
Excited about taking your kids for a trip to an aquarium? You must have told them about the fun and excitement coming their way. But do spare a thought for a list of important dos and don’ts. Here are some general instructions and safety tips for kids at an aquarium.
Kids love outings and if the place they’re visiting includes an aquarium then they’ll be all the more delighted. The experience is one of a kind and even you’ll be amazed. However, there are certain things that you need to consider when taking children such as how to stay safe and make the most of the visit.
How to Plan a Visit to an Aquarium with Toddlers
1. Prepare Them
The atmosphere inside an aquarium is completely different from that outside. It’s darker and cooler and if you don’t share this piece of information with your little ones beforehand, they may get nervous when they enter. Make sure you tell them how an aquarium looks like and also a bit about the kind of creatures they’re likely to see.
2. No banging!
Kids get really It’s not surprising to see them knocking and banging on the glass of fish tanks to try to get their attention. Too often parents let their kids run wild with no regard for rules. Give clear instructions to your children on how to behave in an aquarium. Tell them that they can go close to the tanks and look at the sea life, but banging, kicking and shouting are a big no.
3. Give Them Touch Tank Instructions
Instruct your kids to use only two fingers to touch the sea life and under no circumstance should they grab fish or take them out of water. You can ask them how they’d feel if someone were to grab them unexpectedly to help them understand the concept better.
4. Schedule The Visit Smartly
There are a few activities that they can enjoy on a trip to the aquarium but only if you plan the visit well. A two-hour walk through the place will only wear your children out. Take a break, visit the cafeteria and let them relax for a while to get ready for even more exciting activities such as live demos and touch tanks. This way, they get to catch almost everything without being dead tired.
5. Be Prepared to Leave Anytime
Even as you prepare the kids for a visit, you never know how they’ll behave once inside. Aquariums these days have fish tanks by the side, overhead and even beneath the floor. Young children may freak out a little seeing so much all around. If you find your little one getting uncomfortable, take him to the cafeteria or a walk outside to calm him down. Leave if you feel that your little one is uncomfortable.
The instructions and safety tips for kids at aquariums shared here should give you a fair idea about what to expect on your visit and on how to keep your children safe and comfortable. You want them to enjoy the trip to the fullest so take the time to follow through. They’ll probably want to return again and again! Read more

A New Perspective to Christmas!
Christmas brings happy vibes and sudden surge of excitement among children. How about applying a new learning this Christmas!
Christmas is one of the most sought after festival for children and it suddenly changes the vibe and brings a happy wave in the cold wintry days.
Children are most excited about Christmas because it is all about meeting friends, exchanging gifts with them, receiving gifts from their most favorite Santa Claus and relishing yummy treats. A month prior to Christmas my girls start discussing and preparing their list of things they want from Santa. Letter to Santa is in full swing and they are at their best behavior because Santa shouldn't get upset in any way. As a mom, I am super happy because I can put all kind of healthy food down their throat with no or very less resistance from them.
Anyway, I am sure we will have a hearty laugh over this when my girls grow up.
Well, intermittent meeting with friends, receiving gifts from Santa Claus and a lot of baking will happen this year too, but, what else can we do to make Christmas special this year? Although 2020 has taught us a lot yet there's one last lesson to learn and imbibe from this year which is sharing, caring and some detachment. Its an unfortunate story but there are children who don't get to enjoy festivities the way many others do. Why not let your child take responsibility for one child and bring a smile on their face?
Together, I and my little ones decided to do something this Christmas and here's what it is. It is extremely difficult to part with one's favorite things. Be it your favorite set of clothes, accessories, and in the case of kids their toys, storybooks, games and the list goes on. There are so many emotions attached to your favorite set of things. Holds true for adults too!
A couple of days back, I and my gals were speaking about Santa's arrival and the number of gifts he will carry with him for all the children this year. Well, this kick-started quite a meaningful conversation between us. I asked them, 'how would our domestic help, (who they call aunty) feel if we gift her daughter some toys on Christmas?' My girls were thrilled with the idea. Then came time to drop the bomb. I suggested, 'How about each of you give one of your favorite toys to her?' They immediately went into thinking mode. I am sure there was a tussle in their little mind of why is mom asking us to part with our toys. I told them that every year on Christmas Santa gets you whatever you desire. How about both of you becoming little girl's Santa this year?. Pop came the question 'But mama she can write to Santa just the way we do' to which i said, 'she can't read or write so if you become her Santa and share your toys with her, she will be happy just like you and can celebrate Christmas with a big smile'. I knew Christmas would have hardly made any sense to that little girl but she would have felt special and that's what I was intending to do with my girls. Moreover, I had to start this with my girls at some point and there was no special time than Christmas as this is one festival kids relate to, the most.
I was surprised to see my girls showing no resistance to the idea of gifting their toys. I thought they wouldn't want to part with their favourite things and that it would require some convincing. But many a time kids astonish us with their sense of understanding. They immediately decided what all to gift her and have even kept those things aside.
This year lets extend a helping hand to whoever we can and in whatever capacity we can. Making someone's day with a genuine effort is the most remarkable present one can ever give. The brighter side of this is, your children too get to experience the joy of giving and being sensitive to humanity. After all, acts of generosity start from home. One more important lesson I am sure would have resonated with my girls. And that is 'sense of detachment to objects'. It's a big word for them but there has to be a start somewhere and I am happy that they got a glimpse of what detachment is!
I hope you found this episode useful. Do share your views on the article.

How to Take Care of Newborn Babies: Pointers for First Time Parents
Newborn babies are bundles of joy who enlighten every parent’s life and help them embrace parenthood, a journey of learning, love, and patience. Whether opting for the best clothes or choosing the right skincare products, parents want what is best for their baby. These unprecedented times have left a lot of parents under stress, especially first-timers. With no crèches or help available currently, no masseuse for massaging and bathing the baby, nuclear families have limited access to help from the baby’s grandparents. New mums and dads are now sharing the baby care responsibilities dealing with their doubts and uncertainties.
While first-time parents may have some apprehensions about massaging and bathing the newborn, adopting some simple steps can make this routine a fun-filled activity. Since the baby’s skin barrier is the first line of defense from the outside world, keeping it clean, hydrated, and moisturized is essential. Choosing the right products which are clinically proven mild will ensure that the baby’s skincare needs are met 100 percent.
Providing baby care is both an art and a science, and it is crucial that new parents feel confident about it. Nowadays, brands have evolved to meet the needs of babies and are also designed to turn moments of care at every age and stage into opportunities to strengthen the baby’s connection to their parents, making it safer and more accessible.
Massaging with love
Newborn babies are very wiggly, and massaging them can be a task. Choose a gentle oil to massage your baby’s skin, a product that is fast and easily absorbed, ultralight with no unwanted residues left behind on the skin. Using slow and positive strokes, not spending too much time in one area is the best way. A regular massage with a gentle and loving touch can help parents grow their bond with their child and lead to a baby’s healthy cognitive development.
Choosing the right bathing products is essential to ensure that your precious moments with your baby also do well for the delicate skin. Parents need to support the baby with one hand while washing with the other. Choosing a less slippery baby wash is very important, something that is easy and fast to rinse. With innovations like the one hand, easy-to-use pump packs, user-friendly products don’t dispense excess quantity and allow parents to keep one hand on the baby. Thus providing extra care, helping prevent spills, and clean-ups. The experience of using such products enables parents to be more comfortable, confident, and focused on the baby’s comfort. Even a new dad can bathe the baby confidently!
Haircare
As the baby grows into a toddler, adding baby shampoo and conditioner to nourish the toddler’s hair is a great idea. One should opt for shampoos that rinse quickly, are specially formulated not to sting the baby’s eyes, and are mild. These shampoos will gently unlock knots and tangles without any fuss, especially for toddlers who have thick and curly hair. Using a two-in-one shampoo with conditioner can also be considered for your baby’s hair care.
Keep your baby’s skin hydrated.
A baby’s skin is delicate, while it absorbs water faster than an adult’s skin, and it can also lose its water content more quickly. After a bath, it is recommended to use a light moisturizer or lotion especially developed for a baby. Regular moisturizing will help to retain the moisture levels of the skin and prevent dryness. Using a moisturizer developed especially for baby skin is beneficial in protecting and maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
These steps will not only ease you into the process of baby care but will also give you the confidence to manage your wiggly toddler!
