Taking Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) during Pregnancy
Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin is one of the most important vitamins that your body requires during pregnancy. It has several benefits and the deficiency of this vitamin during pregnancy can cause a lot many complications to the mother as well as the baby.
What Is Riboflavin?
Riboflavin is a vitamin that comes under the Vitamin B group. The body requires it to metabolize fat and protein. It also helps in converting carbohydrates into glucose which is required to energise the body. Riboflavin is found in many of our daily food items, but since it is soluble in water, it gets easily drained out of the body. Hence, it is important to include food items rich in Vitamin B2 in your daily diet. It helps treat migraines and corneal ectasia.
Importance of Vitamin B2 in Pregnancy
Riboflavin or Vitamin B2 is extremely important during pregnancy. Following are the reasons why you should increase your intake of Vitamin B2 during pregnancy.
Morning sickness and nausea can make you tired during pregnancy. But if you take Vitamin B2 in the right amounts, you can combat fatigue and feel energized.
It helps in the development of the baby’s bones, nervous system, and muscles in the womb.
The deficiency of this vitamin may trigger preeclampsia or can maximize the chances of the baby having birth defects, so perhaps you realise how important this vitamin is.
Riboflavin helps in the absorption of iron which prevents anaemia during pregnancy.
It also prevents muscle cramping which is quite common during pregnancy.
Recommended Daily Intake for Pregnant Women
Vitamin B2 supplement during pregnancy should be taken only if it is prescribed by your doctor. Other than that, the body gets enough Riboflavin through a healthy diet and the multivitamin prescribed by your doctor during pregnancy. Generally, about 1.2 – 1.3 milligrams of Riboflavin is recommended. However, during pregnancy, an increase of 0.3 – 0.4 milligrams in the daily intake of the vitamin is usually suggested.
Riboflavin Deficiency
The deficiency of riboflavin occurs when our diet lacks the generally recommended amount of Vitamin B2. This causes skin lesions, lesions in the digestive tract, or sometimes neurological disorders.
Some of the symptoms of the Vitamin B2 disorder include:
Fissuring and dry scaling of the surface of the lips
Swelling of the lips
Ulcers and cracks on the corners of the mouth
Rashes and scaly skin on the scrotum and vulva

FAQs
Some of the frequently asked questions on riboflavin during pregnancy are as follows.
1. Who Is At the Risk of Riboflavin Deficiency?
Pregnant women, particularly vegetarians, suffer from lactose or gluten intolerance or have eating disorders like anorexia, are likely to have riboflavin deficiency.
2. Is It Safe to Take Riboflavin Supplements during Pregnancy?
Vitamin B2 supplements should be taken only after consulting a doctor or only if prescribed by the doctor.
3. Is It Necessary to Eat Riboflavin-rich Foods Every Day during Pregnancy?
Riboflavin being water soluble gets flushed out of the body through urine, bile, and sweat. The body is unable to store much of it. Therefore, it is essential to eat riboflavin-rich foods every day.
4. Can You Take Vitamin B2 Supplements while Pregnant?
Vitamin B2 supplements during pregnancy can be taken only if it has been prescribed by the doctor. Otherwise, a healthy diet which includes green leafy vegetables, meat, grains, cereals, skimmed milk, yoghurt, nuts, eggs, and the prenatal multivitamin supplements prescribed by the doctor is sufficient enough to meet the daily recommended riboflavin dosage for pregnant women.
5. What Happens If You Take Too Much of Vitamin B2 during Pregnancy?
Since riboflavin is water-soluble, it gets drained out of the body through urine, sweat, and bile. Therefore, there is rarely a chance of the body having an excess of it. However, an overdose of riboflavin and pregnancy at the same time may cause a number of side effects:
Diarrhoea
Frequent urination
Sensitivity to light
Allergic reactions like hives, swelling of lips, tongue or the face
In rare cases, one may suffer from a severe allergic reaction or respiratory problems
Although having a normal level of riboflavin is mandatory during pregnancy, overdoing it by taking additional supplements may cause health complications. It may pose a risk to you as well as your baby in the womb. So, take it in optimal amounts and if you have any doubts, you can always consult your doctor.

8 Things your Husband Finds Unattractive - Avoid Them Now!
Women can be quick at finding fault with husbands, but do you know that men also have their own list of likes and dislikes? Maybe you're turning your man off with things you take for granted!
Do you know that men can be as picky as women? They might not appreciate everything you do or don't do. The next time your husband gives you that stare, stop and think! There might be a few things he doesn’t find too sexy.
Things Husbands Find Unattractive in Their Wives
1. Too much body hair
While not every man is turned off by body hair, too much of it lists among the 10 things men find unattractive. If you’ve been putting off your waxing sessions, get to them soon.
2. Zero skincare
Your husband loves glowing skin. If you welcome him home with an oily face and chapped lips, chances are he’ll get turned off. Take proper care of your skin. Motherhood’s no excuse to ignore this!
3. Poor oral hygiene
Just like women, what husbands find unattractive in wives is lack of oral hygiene. You can never expect your man to be attracted to you if you smile at him with yellow teeth or have bad breath.
4. Too-coiffed hair
What men really love in women is silky hair through which they can run their fingers as they whisper sweet nothings. If your hair is sticky with gels and sprays, your man will definitely not like it. Even if you want to style your hair, skip the excess products.
5. Face caked with make-up
Too much make-up is something that most men don’t like. Agreed, you need foundation to hide blemishes and get a smooth complexion, but why overdo it? Use just the right amount and blend it into your skin so that you don't look like you’re wearing a mask!
6. Clumpy eyelashes
Mascara is a wonderful product that can make eyes look beautiful. But if you use too much of it, your eyelashes will stick to each other and this is what your hubby finds unattractive. Make sure you use a product by a well-known brand to ensure good quality and no allergies.
7. Too much fragrance
Yes, men love fragrance. But, if you thought that too much of it will attract your man, think again. Spray just a dash of your favourite perfume behind your ears and on your wrists to attract your man.
8. Checking your make-up in public
Your husband wants to show off his pretty wife, but not one who keeps staring at the tiny mirror in her compact instead of socialising with his friends! The next time you feel the need to check your make-up, go to the powder room and fix it in private.
All said and done, try to be as natural as you can. There’s no need for pretence in your relationship, and this is something he’ll appreciate wholeheartedly. While you should make the effort to look good not just for him but for yourself too, remember that natural beauty trumps an overly made-up face any day! Read more

How to Deal with Postpartum Depression
Life sometimes throws a challenge at you when you least expect it. A similar thing happened with me when I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of my baby to enjoy my journey of motherhood. Instead, I found myself utterly depressed after my child was born. Almost all mothers go through the period of baby blues, anxiety, and nervousness, but for some new mothers, these symptoms are very severe which leads to depression. I was one such mother who went through depression. Statistics reveal that around 10% to 15% of the new mothers suffer from postpartum depression and almost every mother experiences baby blues.
Hormonal imbalance is largely responsible for this condition but it's extremely important to understand the difference between baby blues and depression. New mothers tend to feel tearful, exhausted, and irritable because of sleep deprivation, fatigue, and hormonal imbalance but if it's a case of baby blues, one gets back to their normal self after a few days or sometimes, after a month or two. On the other hand, postpartum depression can surface 2-3 weeks after delivery and may worsen with time. It can last for months, and in my case, it lasted for more than a year. When you are suffering from PPD, you lose interest in the things you once enjoyed, you are not able to bond with your newborn, and you may not feel like doing anything. The worst is that nothing seems to get you out of this helpless situation. You are overwhelmed by negative feelings and consider yourself one bad mother. Some new mothers even become suicidal.
There are certain things that should be done to come out of PPD which are as follows -
1. Accept
First of all, accept your condition and don't deny the fact that something is wrong. Don't suffer alone; share your concerns with your husband, mother, or a friend. It's utterly important to see a doctor and seek his/her advice.
2. Think Positive
After accepting that you are going through depression, the next difficult thing that you will have to do is try to stay positive. Negativity during this period is so strong that staying positive may seem far fetched, but remember to tell yourself over and over again that it's just a passing phase and will go away soon. Keep reassuring yourself that you will be back to your normal self again. I am telling you this from my own experience. As long as I was in denial and had a negative frame of mind, I was getting worse, but when I started to believe that I would be fine, I began to improve.
3. Eat Healthy
It's extremely important to take care of your food choices. The right amount of nutrients are essential to heal the mind and body. Deficiencies can aggravate this condition. So make sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables and never skip your meals. Consume healthy foods like milk, cereals, ghee, pulses, eggs, etc and avoid junk food to provide your body with all vitamins and minerals to stay fit.
4. Exercise and Meditate
Healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Try to make an exercise routine for yourself. Be it walking, running, or yoga and meditation. I did meditation to recover from PPD. Meditation helps you build a positive frame of mind which is a challenge during this time. Above all, have faith in God; He will definitely take you out of this gloominess. It is not going to last forever.
5. Develop a Hobby
It's extremely essential to have some 'me' time. Amidst all the chaos that has taken over your life, it is extremely important that you take time out for yourself. Be it painting, reading, or cooking. You should do whatever you like to do. You won't feel like doing any of the things but you need to push yourself to keep you busy.
6. Spend Time with Your Loved Ones
Spend time with your husband; go out for a movie or shopping. Do the things together which you two used to do before the baby's arrival or meet your friends. Having a heart to heart talk with your girlfriends or sister can be a great stress buster. You might cut off yourself from the people around you but never do that. Talk to them even if you don't feel like doing that.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel because I have been through this tunnel. However gloomy it might seem, but always remember that it's a passing phase and it shall pass, a beautiful life is awaiting you. The most important phase of your life - MOTHERHOOD.

Quitting My Job for the Sake of Precious Pregnancy
I was a booming engineer, with my skills and abilities I was on top of my career ladder. With my dreams and hopes it was almost 5 years of working. Once my mother had told me, whatever may be the situation never quit from your work. I believed in her words and wanted to do so, but my fate had different plans.
Me and my husband were in love for more than 5 years and we convinced our parents. With their blessings we had a great wedding. Soon after 3 months, I was conceived. We had planned properly that we will not plan anything as I was having PCOS. So,everyone was happy. I was super excited. As it was our first time, we visited the gynaecologist when I missed my periods and after a pregnancy test and ultrasound of 35 days she prescribed some medicines and told everything is fine. Our bad luck she didn't call for 45 day scan for heartbeat checking.
Because of some circumstances we had to change the doctor. I was going to my job as usual. Doctor used to tell that it is precious pregnancy. One day at my workplace I almost collapsed. Then Doctor said I have to be on bed rest until I enter 2nd trimester. So, I was on bed rest since I was one and half month pregnant. I was on leave from my job.
Exactly after 2 months 10 days, bleeding started and I was in shock. I was rushed to hospital, after ultrasound it was found that baby's heartbeat not found. Fetus was not developed well. So, I had my first miscarriage. it was devastating. I was advised that next pregnancy I should be in bed rest from the day I get conceived.
I was mentally and physically upset and I took time to recover. During investigation it was got to know that I had hypothyroidism and was not prescribed any medicine for that.
We took time and after 4 years of marriage, we planned and started with folic acid tablets from 3 months. I conceived and it was the happiest thing for me but more than that I was so scared. During that time I was doing my job well and was on verge of promotion in my software field.
It was given a strict instruction to be on bed rest. I had no choice than quitting my job, as it was my precious pregnancy. I was on bed rest during my pregnancy. Still bleeding happened when it was 13th week of pregnancy. Got a cervical stitch at 24th week as cervix was dilating. Had a emergency C section at 32nd week. My baby was born preterm and I was not shown to her as she was shifted to another hospital. I saw her after 2 days of my delivery and I felt all the pain and bed rest was worth for her. I felt she is my world. I could hold her in my arms and breastfeed her after 9 days.
Now she is 18 months old healthy and beautiful. I have no one to take care of her so, I have not yet joined back to work. I feel like when will I start my work, when will I be the same old person and I know I am a different person now. But I can't leave her in anyone's hand, as I know no one can love her and take care of her as I do.
