By the time they are 11 months old, most babies can eat a wide range of items like fruits, vegetables, and meat. Three meals and a snack alongside formula or breast milk are what an average 11-month-old baby needs each day. The meal and snack timings will depend on your baby’s daily routine as well as yours.
How Much Quantity Per Day?
Your baby's appetite will vary depending on his level of activity and his growth spurt to a large extent. The following is an approximate estimation of the quantity of food your baby needs each day:
Up to half a cup of cereal
Up to half a cup of vegetables
Up to half a cup of fruits
Up to 3 tbsp of dairy
Up to half a cup of mixed cereals
Up to 4 tbsp of meat or other proteins
How to Check If Your Baby Is Getting Enough Breast Milk or Formula
While feeding your baby, a few concerns are bound to creep up every now and then. You might wonder if your child is getting enough milk or formula every day - here are some ways in which you can assess this:
Breastfed Baby:
If your baby appears content after every feed, it is an indication that he is getting enough milk.
When you experience a let-down, it is an indication that breastmilk is being replenished on a regular basis.
Check your baby’s urine and see if it is clear and odourless. That is a sign of a well-fed baby.
Your baby has regular bowel movements.
Formula-fed Baby:
Convert your baby’s weight into pounds and multiply it by 2 and 2.5 to get two values that will be considered as lower and upper ranges for the amount of formula your baby needs each day.
As your baby approaches his first birthday, the formula feed is likely to decline to just one big feed per day.
See if your baby wets a minimum of six diapers in a 24-hour period.

Homemade Baby Food Recipes
1. Semolina (Suji) Halwa
Ingredients
½ cup semolina (suji)
1 cup of water
½ tsp powdered cashews/almonds (optional)
½ tsp ghee
1 date, pureed
How to Prepare
Warm the ghee in a pan and then roast the semolina in it. Keep stirring to avoid burning. When the semolina turns aromatic, add the water and date puree. Stir to prevent lumps, and if you are using the powdered dry fruits, you can add them in at this point. When the semolina appears cooked, turn off the heat. Keep the consistency of the halwa a little thin as it will thicken further while cooling.
2. Spinach and Cottage Cheese (Paneer) Pasta
Ingredients
1 cup pasta (penne or macaroni)
1 bunch spinach
1 cup grated cottage cheese (paneer)
Water as required
Salt if required
How to Prepare
First, cook the pasta and ensure it is soft enough for your baby to eat easily. You can also mash it lightly if you want. Wash the spinach well and boil it for a while. Add the cottage cheese to it and cook for a few minutes till the raw smell and taste disappear. Cool this mixture and grind it to a smooth paste with a little water. You can also add in a little salt if required. Mix this with the pasta and serve it to your baby.
3. Creamy Carrot and Sweet Corn Rice
Ingredients
¼ cup chopped onion
½ cup boiled sweet corn
¼ cup carrot peeled and chopped
½ cup of rice
1 tbsp butter
A bay leaf
A pinch of pepper powder
Water as required
How to Prepare
Heat the butter in a pan and sauté the onions in it until translucent. Add the cooked and boiled corn to this. Next, add the chopped carrots and pepper. Saute for a while and turn off the heat. You can cool this and roughly or smoothly grind the mixture depending on your child’s preferences. Boil water to cook the rice and add the bay leaf. Cook the rice till it is soft enough for your baby to eat. Stir in the mixture and remove the bay leaf. Serve it warm to your baby.
4. Apple Chicken Nuggets
Ingredients
1 egg yolk
1 apple- peeled and grated
1 clove of garlic
1 cup chicken minced or ground finely
A pinch of pepper
A pinch of thyme, finely powdered
Some oil to grill/fry
How to Prepare
Mix the listed ingredients except for the egg yolk. Then shape the mixture into small nuggets. Beat the egg yolk well and brush it on the nuggets - you can also dip the nuggets in the beaten egg yolk. Shallow fry or grill the nuggets till the chicken is cooked well. Using olive oil can make the nuggets more crispy and flavorful.
5. Kidney Bean (Rajma) Soup
Ingredients
1 small onion, chopped finely
½ cup kidney beans (rajma) soaked overnight
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1 small tomato- finely chopped
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp butter
A pinch of black pepper powder
Salt if required
Water as required
How to Prepare
Place a pressure cooker on heat and melt the butter. Add the chopped garlic and sauté it for about a minute. Then put in the onions and stir fry till they become soft. Then add the chopped tomato and sauté till it becomes pulpy. Add the soaked kidney beans to this and sauté for a few minutes. Pour in two cups of water and cook the beans well in the cooker till they are soft enough to mash. Blend the mixture to a soup consistency and boil it. Add the lemon juice and pepper along with some salt if you want. Serve in a bowl.
Feeding Tips to Feed Your Eleven-month-old Baby
Compiling an 11-month-old baby food list and using it as a reference can simplify things for you.
Sterilise utensils like spoons, plates, bowls and glasses that you will use to feed your baby. You can immerse these in hot water for a few minutes and take them out when you are ready to serve the food.
Every time you introduce a new healthy food, be sure to keep an eye out for any signs of allergies. Also, be sure to give a gap of at least three to five days before introducing the next new food and only introduce one food at a time.
Try to avoid sugar and salt in your baby’s food at least until the first birthday. Cow’s milk and honey are also not advised unless your baby turns one.
Be sure to supplement your baby’s solid feeds with breast milk or formula based on your child’s demands.
Check with your paediatrician if you have any concerns about your child’s feeding habits.
Your baby is growing up fast and starting to explore the world around him. So, this is the right time to introduce your baby to new foods one at a time and gradually get him to eat what the family eats. Just ensure that the food you offer your child is as healthy and home-cooked.

While introducing solid food to a baby, initially, one needs to prepare watery gruels/soups. As a child gets older, the caretaker/ mother has to increase the thickness of the liquids slowly according to the child’s capacity to swallow. Foods that are too thick can cause stomach upset/ unnecessary load; while excessively watery food might cause the child to remain hungry.
Some kids may eat less on some days and that is absolutely alright. However, if a child eats less for more than 3-4 consecutive days, please visit a doctor to guide further.
A child may eat less during the teething phase or if he/she may not be feeling well. You could increase breast milk /formula feeds on those days. Re-introduce the foods once the child is back to normal.
Don’t stop feeding if the child is suffering from diarrhoea.
You can alter the taste of the food by adding some natural flavours like cinnamon, jeera powder, lemon juice, curry leaves etc. if the child doesn’t accept the food initially.

CMV(Cytomegalovirus) in Pregnancy
Cytomegalovirus infection is a commonly encountered virus in human beings. It causes a mild infection in adults which does not pose any severe health problem, and the body can combat it without any special treatment. Although that's the case in adults, this virus must be treated more seriously during pregnancy. CMV virus has avidity towards pregnancy and has potential to cause congenital CMV in newborns.
What is Cytomegalovirus?
Cytomegalovirus belongs to the virus family Herpesviridaeis and is known to be one of the most common congenital viral infection which affects all age groups. Almost everyone encounters this virus in their lifetime. The virus can stay in a healthy person's body in an inactive form without any symptoms for their entire life and even if it becomes active, the immune system can fight against it without any treatment. The CMV virus can cause severe health conditions if the person becomes immuno-compromised which can be a result of HIV infection. Congenital CMV infection is when the baby is born with the infection. It is identified as the leading cause for children developing hearing problems or even hearing loss due to non-genetic reason. Cmv virus and pregnancy are a highly discussed since it can be a threat to the baby's health.
How Common is CMV?
CMV virus is prevalent and affects the worldwide population. It is estimated that more than 40% of people have encountered this virus by the time they are 20 years of age. Any form of close contact with an infected person can lead to transmission of the virus to the healthy person.
Causes of CMV Infection
CMV spreads from an infected person to another person through body fluids. This includes saliva, urine, faeces, tears, vaginal secretions, semen, bread milk and any other bodily secretion. CMV infection is not related to food, water or animals. Although it is not a highly contagious disease, it is seen to spread quickly among the household as a result of sharing utensils or close intimate contact with an infected individual. Also, toddlers playing or schooling together have a higher risk of transmitting CMV infection to each other.
Symptoms of CMV
CMV usually does not present with any symptoms and the person might not even know they are infected. Even if there are symptoms, they are vague and can often be confused with that of a common cold or other viral infection. It's symptoms generally include:
High fever (above 100F)
Fatigue
A sore throat
Muscle and joint pains
Swollen glands
Weakness and loss of appetite
A weakened immune system which paves the way for other infections in severe cases like pneumonia, hepatitis, etc.
This can further worsen the immune system and make the woman susceptible to common pregnancy infections.
Congenital cytomegalovirus is a condition when the cytomegalovirus is passed on from the mother to the child before birth. It is when the condition is present in the baby at birth. Congenital CMV in pregnancy can happen during any stage where it gets transferred through the placenta to the baby. In these situations, the baby may present with the following conditions:
Low birth weight and smaller head
Enlarged liver and spleen
Jaundice
Pneumonia
In the long term, if it is untreated, it can cause hearing loss, visual impairment, etc.
In most cases, the baby may not present with any symptoms at birth but will develop physical or mental problems later.
Diagnosis of CMV
The symptoms of CMV can be easily confused with that of common cold or throat infection. Almost everyone encounters the virus once in their lifetimes, and once it enters the body, the virus stays in their bodies in the dormant state. Diagnosis is made by a simple blood test of the patient or sample of any other body fluid or even tissue. If the patient is CMV positive, then accordingly the doctor suggests further treatment if required. If a pregnant woman is detected positive, then the doctor may check if the baby has also got the infection. This is usually done by performing an ultrasound to check for any CMV related abnormalities and can be followed by carrying out an amniocentesis. In cases of congenital CMV, the doctor must test the baby at birth or within first two weeks preferably to ensure that it is congenital CMV.
Risks of Cytomegalovirus
The infection due to CMV is usually mild and does not show any specific symptoms. Unless the person's immune system gets compromised, the infection does not pose any major health threats. Even with congenital CMV, the majority of babies (about 80%) do not show any signs and also do not develop any complications in future. However, in the rest 20% severe problems may be seen such as:
Premature birth
Enlarged liver or spleen
Lower birth weight
Smaller head
Inflamed lymph nodes
Even though the baby does not show any symptoms at birth, he may develop some of the following conditions later in life:
Vision loss
Hearing loss
Learning disabilities
Impaired neural development
Lack of coordination
Muscle weakness
Effects of CMV on Mother and Unborn Baby
Most pregnant women would already have antibodies against CMV since they would have encountered the virus before in life. Hence the mother does not face any serious threats from the viral infection. However, for the baby, the infection can be dangerous if transmitted.
How Is the Virus Transmitted from Mom to Unborn?
CMV exposure in pregnancy can go undetected to get transmitted to the foetus during pregnancy or at delivery. This transmission is possible through the placenta depends on the stage of pregnancy when the mother got the infection. If the mother encounters the virus after her first trimester, the chances of the baby being born which congenital CMV are less, but if the mother gets CMV early pregnancy, the chances are higher of the baby being born with the infection. Out of these also, the majority do not display any symptoms at birth or even during later stages of life.
Cytomegalovirus Treatment
Treatment is not required in adults since the immune system of the body is sufficient to fight the infection, but in some cases, the doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs.
How to Prevent CMV Infection?
There are simple ways to protect yourself from the infection. Maintaining a hygienic lifestyle, cleaning toys or surfaces which come in contact with saliva or urine, etc. can go a long way in preventing the virus from entering your body. 1. Time
They lose time with their kids – precious time that they are probably never going to get back.
They gain time for their career – time that allows them to focus on their job and ace it.
The biggest struggle for a working mother is that of striking a proper work-life balance that allows her to have enough time with her children, her family, and enough time for herself, without falling behind or lagging in her job or carer as compared to her colleagues.
2. Health
They lose good health for themselves – as work and family keeps pulling them in opposite directions, health almost always suffers.
They gain confidence and self-worth – which definitely does wonders for their self-respect, and in turn their mental health.
The tight-rope walk that most working moms try hard to do, often ends up with them compromising on their health – especially the food they eat. However, working at par other men and women, and knowing their self-worth surely serves as a healthy boost to their self-esteem and confidence. And a healthy mind is the first step to a happy life.
3. Nutrition
They lose their control of the kitchen – as most of them employ maids to cook for them.
They gain more time to spend with their children – as one of the biggest 'chores' of the house is taken care of by someone else.
Let's face it – one of the biggest duties or jobs of being a mother and a wife is to ensure your family gets nutritious and healthy food to eat. However, it is also one of the most time-consuming 'chores' around the house... which is why many working moms prefer hiring a maid to cook for them. This means the kitchen is going to be reorganised, you are never going to find things where you left them (or when you need them), and there is probably going to be too much oil in the sabzi! But all that freed up time definitely means more time to spend with the children – and one mammoth task off your shoulders!
4. The House
They lose control over how their house is maintained – as there may not be enough time to do things around the house and keep it as neat and clean as they would wish to.
They gain the ability to contribute towards stability of the house – by taking on part of the financial responsibility of the house.
A lot goes into keeping a house neat and tidy, clean, and in proper order. However, working moms may not be able to give as much of their time towards this seemingly trivial but equally important aspect of running a family. On the other hand, the fact that they are contributing toward financial stability of the same house must definitely bring peace to their minds – and a sense of achievement and pride too.
5. Sleep
They lose the liberty of the afternoon siesta – because you cannot possibly sleep in the middle of a meeting!
They gain the liberty to go to bed on time at night – because you cannot possibly stay awake beyond a certain hour after you have been on your toes the whole day.
The day of a stay-at-home mom gets a well-deserved and required 'pause' in the afternoon, where she may have an hour or two to rest a bit. Not for a working mom though! However, the upside of losing the beloved afternoon siesta is that you can go to bed early, with your children. There is no way you can stay awake beyond 10 or 11 after having been on your toes the whole day. You can retire early to bed, and get (or at least try to get) undisturbed 7 hour sleep before you get ready to take on the world again!
6. Friendships
They lose friends – because after giving time to their work, family, and themselves, there is hardly any time left to maintain friendships.
They gain friends – in the form of colleagues!
Friends are your family away from family. They are the first relationship that you forge outside of your family, and come to mean a lot to you through the different stages of life. However, as other things take on higher positions in your list of priorities, friendships take a back-seat. Many working moms will admit that they haven't seen their best friend from school or even college in a long time. But their work place sure offers a lot of potential for new friendships to be formed.
7. Upbringing
They lose their say in their child's upbringing – as they have to rely on other family members to look after their child, who may teach the child things that the mother doesn't necessarily agree with.
They gain the chance to instil great values in their children – by making an example of their own lives.
A mother may not necessarily want to give her child too many chocolates. She may not want for her child to watch so much TV. She may wish for her child to read more books. While a stay-at-home mom can personally look into all these minute aspects of bringing up her child, a working mom may not have the liberty to do so. However, by being independent, self-sufficient, and dedicated to her work, she can definitely set a fine example for her children – a role model for them to aspire to.
8. Special Moments
They lose being a witness to their child's achievements – because your child may just choose to walk or talk while you are attending a conference call in office!
They gain a lot of special moments at office – that come in the form of achievements, recognition, and awards.
The first time her baby walks, the first time the baby says 'mumma' are special moments for sure. Your child's first gold star on his homework, his first medal in the school race, are important milestones of the child that a working mom may have to forego. However, for every lost special moment, she is creating milestones and pitching flags in the outside world.

No woman ever resents her baby for changing her body during pregnancy, but she sure can resent her husband! ||
Husbands don’t have to sober-up and give up favourite foods due to nausea!
While pregnant women have to eat for two, they can’t eat many things for the better health of their baby. At the same time, husbands don’t have to make any such lifestyle changes and continue to enjoy their favourite culinary delights. Saying “we’re pregnant” while enjoying that cocktail is definitely not the right thing to do.
It can prove to be a trigger for your hormonal wife!
The final trimester can be a truly testing time for both husband and wife. But at the same time, the physical discomfort, emotional upheavals and recurring stage of insomnia which the wife experiences makes the final stage of pregnancy more harrowing for her. Thus an innocent proclamation of “we’re pregnant” from an unsuspecting husband can lead up to a full blown fight if said at the wrong time.

World Breastfeeding Week: My Experience With Breastfeeding
Hello, mommies out there!
I just want to share my experience with breastfeeding. Not to criticise any mom who are bottle feeding.
This amazing journey started two years ago. Being a first-time mom with many questions running in my mind some of which was whether I'm ready to take this new role? What if my supply is poor? What if my baby is not able to latch?
With many such questions finally, the day had arrived which was the best moment of my life. Feelings which I cannot express through words when I held my newborn and he just tried his best to feed. Thereafter, he couldn't latch properly. So he dropped more weight than expected.
From then onwards, I started to take a balanced diet with lots of water and food which would help in increasing my milk supply.
I tried to help my son to learn how to feed by trying different breastfeeding positions, and above all the key to successful breastfeeding is demand and supply formula.
Sometimes they feed every two hours, sometimes hourly, sometimes they just do comfort feeding. Eventually, I tried to understand my son's language, his hunger cues, and requirements. Many people advised to let the baby learn to separate nursing and sleep but they were nights when it was nearly impossible to do that. So what I learnt is to let it go. They'll learn at their own pace.
I always tried to be calm because stress further hampered my milk supply. So don't compare what other mothers are doing. Every mother and child are different and unique. There are no hard and fast rules in breastfeeding. So enjoy the journey with time. Today it may be easy, tomorrow it may be very hard, but everything is a phase and this shall too pass.
Every mother goes through this tough yet beautiful phase. She may go through a lot. Some of them like engorged breasts, blocked ducts, sore nipples for which the solution is to frequently feed with proper latching.
My all-time favourite phrase is breastfeeding on demand With time, my son and I have mastered this phase together and created a special bond between us. Now I'm blessed with a second son and still continuing my breastfeeding journey.
Happy breastfeeding week to all mothers! Cherish and relish these moments with your babies. In the blink of an eye, they all will be grown up. Always trust your body and baby. Keep up the positive attitude. If you face any challenges, always seek professional help.
