What person doesn’t like chickpeas? It is a favourite dish enjoyed by all. But when you enter your pregnancy you might have to be careful about what goes into the system, chickpeas being one of them. From the first trimester to the third being conscious about your diet is an essential step to consider.
But that does not mean that chickpeas are a complete no-no. There are more benefits than drawbacks that make it a good choice for any pregnant woman. Read on to explore both the benefits and the side effects.
Are Chickpeas Safe during Pregnancy?
Chickpeas are regarded as one of the safest food items during pregnancy. The Only thing one needs to remember is to cook chickpeas properly till it softens properly. And, another thing is to always eat chickpeas in adequate quantities. Owing to the high nutritious value, chickpeas provide proteins, minerals, and required folic acid levels.
Chickpea Benefits for Pregnant Women
Chickpeas can benefit both the foetus and the mother in numerous ways. Read on to find how.
1. Averting the Neural Tube Defects
Studies suggest that chickpeas are rich in folate or aptly known as the folic acid. The presence of this acid in the body has proved to be a boon as it helps in averting neural tube defects.
Research is evidence of the fact that folic acid present in chickpeas has avoided neural defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Usually witnessed in the first month of your pregnancy, these neural defects may not take much time to influence your health. So the next time you wonder, is besan safe during pregnancy? Remember the high levels of folate that are actively working to keep the foetus healthy.
2. Prevention of Anemia
Anemia is a condition in humans where either the red blood count diminishes or the haemoglobin value witnesses a downfall. Thus, normal blood count and haemoglobin are desired.
Iron is one constituent that helps in generating red blood cells significantly. And, interesting the sumptuous chickpeas contain nearly 22% of iron in every 100 grams of chickpeas serving. Needless to say, the iron would consequently boost the red blood cells in the system thus no more feeling of exhaustion or nausea.
3. Great Source of Energy
Pregnancy is no play work. A woman feels all tired and exhausted during the crucial months of pregnancy. You will need the extra energy to carry that extra weight of your womb. But it is the intake of chickpeas that come to the rescue.
A whole serving of chickpeas contains proteins, iron, and even the required calorie levels. One can’t ignore the black chana benefits in pregnancy. The black chickpeas provide the required energy levels for bearing the challenges one may face during pregnancy.
4. Brain Development
Chickpeas comprise of choline, i.e. a micronutrient that aids in brain development and building healthy nerves. When you munch on your favourite chickpeas, you indirectly help the fetus in development of the brain and the spinal cord.
A hundred grams of serving of chickpeas contains 43 grams of chlorine. What could be better than that?
5. Overall Foetus Health
Chickpeas contain manganese that aids in developing bone strength and cartilage. This nutrient also aids in cell protection, and in the metabolism of amino acids and carbohydrates.
A woman needs about 2 mg of manganese in a day’s time. Women get about 1.69 mg of manganese from one cup of garbanzo beans, i.e. 164 grams.
Effects of Eating Chana during Pregnancy
There are some effects of eating chickpeas that you are ought to know. Some of which include:
Pregnant women are most conscious about their increasing weight. Eating chickpeas can help you keep obesity levels in control.
Chickpeas can lead to allergic reactions if you have a history of sensitivity to chanas.
Chickpeas can also lead to acidity in some women. But worry not, soaking the legumes overnight can help you do away with the acidic content.
Chickpeas may cause kidney stones or even gout due to the excessive uric acid discharged from its intake. Purine contained in chickpeas is the cause of generation of uric acid.
If you are suffering from diarrhoea, chickpeas should be avoided as it may worsen the situation
Consuming high fibre food such as chickpeas can help reduce constipation. But eating partially hard chickpeas can cause digestion problems you would want to avoid when pregnant.
Eating too much of anything is harmful. Same goes the case for chickpeas. Eating chickpeas on a regular basis can lead to stomach ache and discomforts while pregnant. Though the reason is not known, it is believed to be bloating or gas accumulation.
In some women who are allergic to soybeans, they may also become allergic to chickpeas. Avoid eating chickpeas for it may cause itching, nausea, or even an upset stomach.
How to Cook Chickpeas?
Here are some tips when preparing chickpeas. Important ones to know include:
To start with preparing a delicious chickpeas dish, you need to soak them in water overnight.
Prepare the dish in the morning by boiling the chana for about half an hour and sautéing it with spices.
If you are opting for canned chickpeas, you just need to open the can and start enjoying the meal. Though this form of boiled or roasted chana during pregnancy is not healthy to eat.
Once you boil the chickpeas be it Kabuli chana or the black chana; add salt, pepper, tomato, and coriander leaves. This makes for a great snack that relishes the taste buds.
Kabuli chana during pregnancy is a recommended diet option. You could roast Kabuli chana with a bit of olive oil and spices in the oven. This could make for a crunchy snack to munch on.
Add boiled chickpeas to your daily intake of soups. You would surely love the flavour and the great taste that would satisfy your hunger cravings.
Add garbanzo beans to your one cup serving of yoghurt for a great tasting experience. You could also add cucumber or raisins for making for a flavorful treat
These were some benefits and side effects associated with chickpeas. Looking at both the side of the coin, remember to include chickpeas to your diet but in adequate quantities. Maintaining the good health of you and the fetus is all that matters.

Save that Saree! Carry a Saree Without Tripping Over
The different ways to drape a saree add to its beauty. But there are many women who aren't comfortable wearing one. You can see them walking with one hand holding up the pleats and the other trying to keep the pallu in place. Learn how to drape this elegant garment.
The saree, oozing with panache, is one garment that can never get old- no matter how the fashion scene changes. It personifies grace and elegance and does the practical job of camouflaging problem spots. But do you shy away from wearing one due to fear of tripping over it? Well, no more! Learn to drape this six-yard wonder with élan!
6 Helpful Tips to Avoid Tripping over Your Saree
From you tipping over the lower hem of the saree, to the saree falling off itself if not tucked in properly - there are many unfortunate mishaps that can happen when it comes to wearing a saree. Here are 6 simple tips on how to drape a saree and keeping wardrobe malfunctions at bay!
1. Pin it up
How often have movies shown saree pallus flying with the breeze? Though it seems ethereal, a constantly flapping pallu in reality would be irritating and unmanageable! So this is the first and foremost of saree draping tips we want to share with you, and that is - secure the pallu! If you don't, you’ll end up thinking of nothing else but trying to keep it from going crazy. Thanks to the little safety pin, you can put it neatly in place. Just pin it to your blouse and you’re done.
2. Stitch a fall
It might seem cumbersome to go to the tailor and get a fall stitched to a saree, but it’s worth the effort. This ensures that no matter what way you drape the saree, it falls perfectly and doesn’t get entangled about your ankles or look clumsy.
3. Low is a no-go
Don't drape a saree so low that it literally sweeps the floor. Even if you feel that looks picturesque, it’ll be a nuisance. Imagine trying to get your little one to sit still when your saree is caught in your heels! You’ll be watching your step and and end up gathering it in your hands to avoid tripping.
4. Tie it at the right height
To have a saree fall a couple inches off the floor, tie it at the right height. Be prepared for some trial and error. You might've to attempt it several times to find the perfect height. If you prefer tying it low to show your belly button, make sure to consider the height of the petticoat too as it tends to slip down sometimes.
5. Wear medium heels
Whoever said that stilettos are the only shoes to wear with a saree! While they definitely look gorgeous and are great if you can walk comfortably in them, for most women the ideal choice is shoes with medium heels. Kitten heels are stylish and popular. And in case you want to go higher, try block heels as they’re easier to balance on.
6. Be fabric-wise
When shopping for a saree, you may be tempted to buy satiny soft ones made super-stylish by celebs. Avoid the temptation! As pretty as they are, they slide and need plenty of pins to hold in place. Instead, opt for sarees in chiffon and georgette that are easy to drape and manage. You also want to avoid heavy sarees that have a tendency of pulling down petticoats.
Drape your six-yard wonders confidently with these tips on how to wear a saree. Have the perfect pleats by getting them stitched in place. They’ll give you the comfort of wearing a dress and no one will be able to tell the difference! Read more

Preparing Your Dog For Your Baby’s Arrival
Introducing dogs to a baby, or training dogs for a new baby in the house, can be a tricky thing. Dog owners who are expecting to become parents soon must also consider the life transition their dog will go through once a new baby becomes a member of the house. Preparing your dog for the baby’s arrival and introducing your baby to your dog should therefore be a well thought out and planned activity.
Dogs have always cherished the position of being a man’s best friend. While dog owners cherish the presence of their dog in every aspect of their life, the arrival of a new born baby becomes a tricky aspect to handle for both the dog and the owner. New parents become overly insecure about their baby and tend to forget or ignore the needs of their pet. As a result, the dog often feels rejected, confused and resentful towards the new baby.
Training Dogs For Baby's Arrival
Start preparing your dog for a change in feeding schedule as once your baby will arrive, you will not be able to adhere to proper meal timings for him. Train your dog to be flexible so that once your baby arrives, your dog doesn’t become fussy about his food.
Hire a dog walker or develop a walking schedule for your dog which would give you some breathing space once the baby arrives. You will be operating on very little sleep for quite some time after the baby is born. Your frustration should not be vented on your dog. So plan ahead and save yourself some trouble.
Start training your dog to anticipate new smells and sounds around the house. Introduce him to smells of baby lotion, nappies and formula as well as sounds of nursery rhymes. A baby’s arrival can be a confusing phase for your dog. Make the transition smoother for him by training him in advance.
Train your dog to become less vocal and more polite. A jumping dog when you have the baby in your arms can be annoying as well as dangerous. So train him now to remain on all fours. Also train him to bark less and be less vigilant. This will eventually help your create a more calm environment in the house which is suitable for your baby’s nap time.
Your dog will have to learn to be more obedient once your baby is around. So start conditioning him to respond to instructions like sit, stay, down and go away. This will save you a lot of time and energy and keep both your baby and your dog happy and safe.
Introducing Dogs To Baby
Once your baby has arrived, plan the first interaction between your dog and your baby very carefully.
Get a helper or your spouse to leash your dog when you bring your baby in his vicinity for the first time.
It is normal to be nervous about this event, but instead of showing your unease, motivate your dog in a calm voice and keep giving him treats when he first gets introduced to the baby. This will help him relate to the baby in a positive manner.
Don’t shout at your dog if he tries to show dangerous levels of excitement around the baby.
Let your dog practice some hand target before you let him sniff your baby for a short while.
Once the first introduction is over, distract your dog with a chew-toy or some treats and simply hang-out with him while you hold the baby calmly. This will help your dog understand the normalcy of the situation and accept the baby faster.
It may take some time for both you and your dog to adjust to this major family change. But if you make sure to shower some love on your dog every once in a while and keep things as normal as possible, your baby and your dog will soon learn to be the best of pals. Read more
