10 Uncommon Signs & Symptoms of Pregnancy
When you’ve decided to have a baby, signs and symptoms of pregnancy are much awaited. Missed periods, morning sickness, sore breasts are some common pregnancy symptoms, but there are also some uncommon or unusual pregnancy symptoms which indicate that you’re pregnant. If you’re intrigued to know more about these unusual pregnancy symptoms, we suggest you read this article.
10 Unusual Pregnancy Signs and Symptoms
The human body is a complex system, and pregnancy brings many changes to it. Thus, as soon as you become pregnant, your body starts showing specific symptoms. Sometimes pregnant women tend to show strange signs of pregnancy. So, if you notice any of these happening to you, it could be the sign of a tiny being growing inside you.
1. Insomnia or Reduced Sleep
If you’re finding it difficult to go to sleep at bedtime or waking up at night, it may be a hint that you’re pregnant. We suggest that you stay calm and relaxed, exercise and reduce your caffeine intake to get better sleep.
2. Nasal Stuffiness or Bleeding From the Nose
As strange as it may sound, some pregnant women experience nasal stuffiness or nose bleeding early into pregnancy. This may occur due to lack of moisture in the body. You can either use natural remedies to provide moisture or talk to your doctor about it.
3. Excessive Passing of Gas
If you’re feeling all gassy and bloated, it may be a sign of pregnancy. Yes, it’s possible! Pregnancy takes a toll on your gastrointestinal tract and leads to gas. If you’re burping more than usual and it’s not because of something you’ve eaten, you should get a pregnancy kit and check for yourself. Stay away from gas-inducing foods to avoid putting your stomach under too much distress.
4. Increased Vaginal Discharge
Vaginal discharge is normal during pregnancy, and if you notice that it has increased of late, it may be an indication that you’re pregnant. However, if your vaginal discharge is foul-smelling or has a changed colour than before, it’s best to consult your gynaecologist.
5. Changed Bowel Movements
Pregnancy hormones tend to make the organs slow and sluggish. So, a change in bowel movements is also a sign of pregnancy, though an uncommon one. Slower functioning intestines means difficulty in passing stools, and thus, constipation. We recommend that you add a lot of fibre to your diet and drink adequate water to keep your bowel movements smooth.
6. Metal Taste in the Mouth
Some pregnant women feel that they’re chewing on something made of metal. This occurs due to the surge in estrogen and progesterone in the body and is called dysgeusia. It’s a condition which leads to a distortion of the sense of taste. You can relieve this by sipping on cold drinks, eating sugarless gum products or even trying out some spicy food.
7. Heartburn
Pregnancy hormones affect the valve between the oesophagus and the stomach, causing leakage of stomach acid into the oesophagus and further leading to heartburn. You can reduce the severity by consuming small and regular meals. Refrain from eating heavy, spicy and fatty food items, and caffeinated and aerated beverages.
8. False Period
Experiencing bleeding even when the period isn’t due may be another sign of pregnancy. Bleeding happens when the implantation process takes place, that is, when the embryo attaches itself to the uterine lining. However, sometimes a false period could be a sign of ectopic pregnancy, cervical irritation or other pregnancy-related complications. Get immediate medical help if you experience heavier bleeding, a piercing backache, excessive cramping or other such unusual symptoms.
9. Changes in the Breasts
If your breasts have started becoming bigger and you’ve also been experiencing breast tenderness or soreness, it’s probably good news. The areola or the dark part around the nipples may also become darker for some pregnant women. This happens because the body preps up for breastfeeding.
10. Changes in Libido
Pregnancy does all sorts of weird things to your body, so changes in your libido are also possible. Some women who’re carrying a tiny one may show a drastic rise, while others may see a considerable fall in their sex drive. However, this is normal and shouldn’t cause any worry or concern.
The human body is very complex, and when any change takes place, signals are noticeable. As soon as you get pregnant, your body starts showing all sorts of symptoms that act as cues. As soon as you register any of the common or uncommon pregnancy symptoms, we suggest that you take a pregnancy test or meet your doctor to confirm the good news and have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

Top 7 Children's Stories by Roald Dahl
Reading is more than a hobby, which when cultivated from an early age in children can benefit them academically and prepare them for the future. In the age of smartphones and gadgets, kids hardly ever pick up books (other than their school books, of course!), and this curbs their creativity and imagination. The key to encouraging reading habits in children is by starting early. But most parents struggle to find age-appropriate books for their children, which is why we bring to you some books of an all-time favourite children’s author, Roald Dahl.
Author for the Month of January – Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl is our author for the month of January. Dahl was a British novelist, poet, short story writer, screenwriter, and a fighter pilot. Roald Dahl, a man with too many titles under his belt, was one of the greatest storytellers for children in the 20th century; and his stories continue to inspire kids even today. His famous characters, Willy Wonka, The BFG, or the Old-Green-Grasshopper are etched in our minds. Dahl, by writing such brave and unreal characters, has given children the freedom to dream, imagine, and most of all, enjoy. There’s another reason why he is our author of the first month of this New Year. Roald Dahl’s books explore the themes of courage, following dreams, love and longing for family, greed, etc. all in one story. Your child will learn a lot from his books. So, in this New Year, let your child start reading books by the man whose characters will instil the idea of ‘dare to dream’ in him.
7 Children’s Stories That Your Kids Should Read
Get your hands on these books for your curious little child. We are sure your child will find it hard to put down these books.
1. Matilda
[caption id="attachment_210275" align="alignnone" width="354"] Source: https://www.telegraphindia.com/opinion/who-is-matilda/cid/1439873[/caption]
“Matilda said, "Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it's unbelievable...”
This fantasy story is about a five-year-old girl, Matilda Wormwood, who finds solace in books. Matilda is an intelligent and brave bookworm (of course!), and has special powers too. We know the last bit just made you even more curious! Matilda is extremely insightful even at such a young age; she is wise and understands the behaviour of people in and out. She helps her teacher, Miss Honey to outwit the evil headmistress of her school, Miss Trunchbull. Matilda is a girl different from her peers, but extremely kind.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
On reading this story of Matilda, your child will understand that intelligence is the greatest superpower.
This story will inspire your children to imagine and dream. Your child will understand that for the magic to happen, one must believe in it.
Another lesson that Matilda gives kids her age is that it’s okay to be different and unique.
2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
[caption id="attachment_210284" align="alignnone" width="625"] Source: https://galleryroulette.com/culture/fascinating-behind-the-scenes-facts-about-willy-wonka-and-the-chocolate-factory/?subpage=2[/caption]
“I, Willy Wonka, have decided to allow five children – just five, mind you, and no more – to visit my factory this year.” – Willy Wonka
“I've heard tell that what you imagine sometimes comes true.” – Grandpa Joe
The story of Willy Wonka, an eccentric chocolatier, and Charlie, the poor, brave boy is loved by people of all ages. Charlie is about to embark on a journey of pure imagination, and soon, his dull life is going to turn into an adventurous ride (not to mention full of vicissitudes). Many times a day, poor Charlie would see other children munching on bars of creamy chocolates greedily, but at that time, little did he know that one decision from Willy Wonka was going to change his life. His life changes from rags to riches (with some twists, of course!), and his wishes come true.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
This book thrives on the idea of imagination. Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory is purely out of imagination. This book will make your child realise that there doesn’t need to be a limit to his imagination.
Your child will also learn from this book that it is important to always believe in his dreams. Just like Charlie, your child’s golden ticket to his dream will never seem far away, if he believes in it.
Greed gets us nowhere – only in trouble! This lesson is for both kids and adults alike.
3. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
[caption id="attachment_210289" align="alignnone" width="318"] Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6687.Charlie_and_the_Great_Glass_Elevator[/caption]
“You’ll never get anywhere if you go about what-iffing like that .” – Willy Wonka
“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men,” Mr Wonka said.”
‘Charlie and the Glass Elevator’ is a sequel to the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. If your child is not yet ready to say goodbye to Charlie and Wonka, hand him this book. We just need some more of Willy Wonka because even his eccentric character can teach some really important life lessons to your child.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
On reading the above quotes, you can understand how succinctly Roald Dahl manages to tell children that they do not always need to be serious in life.
This book will inspire kids to take risks in life. Well, not any extreme risks,; but just enough to get ahead in their lives.
Most importantly, no matter where your child goes and what becomes of him, he must remember that having fun is necessary because a life without humour and fun is only half-lived!
4. James and the Giant Peach
[caption id="attachment_210295" align="alignnone" width="324"] Source: http://www.bannedlibrary.com/podcast/2016/2/11/banned-49-james-and-the-giant-peach-by-roald-dahl[/caption]
“Come right up close to me and I will show you something wonderful.” - Old Man
“My dear young fellow,' the Old-Green-Grasshopper said gently, 'there are a whole lot of things in this world of ours you haven't started wondering about yet.”
By writing this story of James, who lived with his two mean aunts, Roald Dahl established himself as a children’s writer. By narrating the tale of James, the Old-Green-Grasshopper and his insect friends, and a giant magical peach, Roald Dahl introduced children to the world of magic. The old man in this story is sneaky and cannot be trusted, whereas the Old-Green-Grasshopper, bugs, and their friends are friendly. The above two quotes from the different characters will make your child understand that no two people are the same.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
This story will widen your child’s horizon of imagination.
This book will also teach your child that he should never judge anyone by their appearance, but by their behaviour.
On reading about James who longed for love in his childhood, your child will also understand the importance of family.
5. The Witches
[caption id="attachment_210298" align="alignnone" width="309"] Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6327.The_Witches[/caption]
“It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like as long as somebody loves you.”
“You are still yourself in everything except your appearance. You've still got your own mind and your own brain and your own voice, and thank goodness for that.”
‘The Witches’ is the story of a boy who lives with his grandmother. He stumbles upon a witch convention where the witches are planning to get rid of every child living in England. The boy and his grandmother plan to fight the witches and save the children. But can they defeat the vile witches?
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
In this book too, the author’s gives a strong message to children - appearances can be deceptive. This book again will teach your child to never judge a person by their looks.
On reading this book, your child will be proud to have you in his life. He will understand that having people who love you is the greatest gift one could ask for.
6. The Twits
[caption id="attachment_210307" align="alignnone" width="500"] Source: https://viewsfromthesofa.com/2015/12/11/which-roald-dahl-books-havent-been-films/[/caption]
"If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face."
“...if you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
The Twits is believed to be inspired by Dahl’s deep hatred for beards. It is a story of an old couple who have lived with each other for so long that they hate each other, but can’t live without each other. “Mr Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever.” They are ugly and keep playing ‘twits and tricks’ on each other. Your child will surely enjoy a hearty laugh while reading about the Twits.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
This book will teach your child to always be happy and do good in life.
Another lesson this book gives to the readers is that in the end, good always triumphs over evil.
With this book, Dahl tries to teach children to be kind to others because being kind and doing good things for mankind makes one happy and takes them ahead in life.
7. The BFG
[caption id="attachment_210311" align="alignnone" width="626"] Source: https://www.theguardian.com/childrens-books-site/2016/feb/21/the-bfg-roald-dahl-review#img-1[/caption]
“Two rights don't equal a left.”
“We is in Dream Country,' the BFG said. 'This is where all dreams is beginning.”
The BFG is an unlikely story of heartwarming friendship between a girl, Sophie, and a big friendly giant. Sophie fears the big friendly giant, but he tells her that he doesn’t eat people. The two of them have a clever plan to catch all the bad giants. Your kid will have to read this book to know how far they succeed.
Why Your Child Should Read This Story
This story will teach your child that friends are important in life. They may be different from us, but we need them.
This book will also teach kids that they should try to make the best of any situation.
These are some of the famous stories written by Roald Dahl, whose witty characters are forever engraved in our hearts. We hope your children enjoy reading these books - every bit of them - as much as we did telling you about them. Since we are talking about Roald Dahl’s books, it’s only fair that we depart with his words too.
“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place, you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books.”
― Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
No, we aren’t asking you to take such extreme measures like throwing away your television set; all we are suggesting is that you install a bookshelf (with all sorts of books in it) in your child’s room, giving him the freedom to explore the world. One day, your child will definitely say what Matilda said-“I'm wondering what to read next. I've finished all the children's books.”
Until then, keep getting good books for your child. Soon, we will be back with more stories from a new author. Keep guessing who’s our author for the next month!

The Easiest Way To Do a Perfect Home Manicure In 8 Quick Steps!
The elegance of perfectly manicured, beautiful hands is unmatched. But maintaining them all the time - especially while running around behind kids and managing house chores - seems next to impossible! Those monthly manicure sessions at the salon are sure to add up to the cost and time that you don’t have to spare. So, is there a solution?
Yes - a home manicure! You don’t have to compromise on having healthy and beautiful hands; you can just get a manicure at home! With these simple steps you can imitate a salon-like manicure at home in 15 minutes, all the while saving a ton of money.
What You Need
Nail Polish Remover
Cotton Buds
Soft Towel
Nail Filer and Nail cutter
Moisturising Hand Lotion
Nail Polish
Shallow Bowl
Warm Water
Cuticle Cream and Stick
Base Coat and Top Coat
Anti-bacterial Liquid Hand Soap
Getting Started
Step 1: Prep Time
Remove your nail polish (if any) with a cotton bud and nail polish remover. Wash your hands with soapy water.
Step 2: Trim It All
Use a nail cutter to trim your nails, if required. Then, shape them using a nail filer. Move the filer smoothly in one direction, moving from one end towards the other. Do not saw back and forth.
Step 3: Time To Relax
Fill up a shallow bowl with warm water and a few drops of anti-bacterial liquid soap. It’s time to relax - soak your fingers in this water to soften cuticles before gently patting them dry. Remember, as tempting as it may be, over soaking your fingers can cause harm to your skin - so keep it to 3 minutes or less!
Step 4: Time for Some Cuticle Care
Apply cuticle cream liberally and start pushing back the cuticles gently using a cuticle stick. Remember to not go overboard. Any free edge of the cuticle needs to be trimmed and not torn off - it’s not only painful, but will also rip off the cuticle bed that protects your nails from bacteria and infections. Wash your hands with clean, warm water once you’re done.
Step 5: The Most Important Step - Moisturizing
Apply some hand cream and massage your hands well till the cream is absorbed completely. Before moving on to the next step, wipe off excess cream from your nails gently using a cotton bud.
Step 6: Build Your Base
Apply a base coat - preferably with a nail strengthening formula and let it dry for a few minutes.
Step 7: Time For Some Colour
Pick your favourite nail colour and start applying it to your nails. Keep in mind the three strokes method - one stroke in the center of the nail before two strokes on the side! Take your time and apply the nail polish smoothly for minimal mess. Nevertheless, keep some cotton buds dipped in nail polish remover handy.
Step 8: Stay Safe With a Second Coat
Once the first coat dries (ideally in 10 minutes), apply a second coat in the same way. Make your nail polish last longer with another top coat. Keep in mind to let the previous coat dry completely to avoid smudges!
And you’re done! Time to show off your pretty manicure! Weekly manicures at home are sure to keep your hands looking beautifully elegant at all times. Now, let your hands do the talking with their shine!

10 Effective Tips for Helping Your Kids with Homework
As parents, you might be forgiven for thinking that the most difficult part of raising a child was the first few years. Even though that time was fraught with new complications and difficulties, the most difficult part of raising a child still remains the period in which he goes to school.
Education is of paramount importance, as it plays a huge role in how your child develops in the future. Education molds his personality and prepares the child to tackle various problems and stand up to the world around him. Therefore, the importance of education and consequently, homework, cannot be understated- you need to pay a lot of attention to your child’s homework to ensure that he grows up right.
Helping your child with his homework will not only help him understand the topics being taught better but also gives you a chance to bond with your child. A lot of light-hearted moments can result from the time, and you have the chance to get closer to your child. However, you must ensure that you do not do all of the work required of him- the best thing to do is to gradually nudge him and point him in the right direction, and then let him figure it out for himself.
Let us take a look at ten ways in which you can help your child do his homework.
How to Help Your Child with Homework?
You need to ensure that you are not too obvious while helping your child out so that he understands the topics on his own with your guidance.
1. Plan it Out
The moment the new academic year begins, you have to have a plan as to how you will approach studies for your child this year. This applies in the case of homework for kids who are grown up, too. You need to improve upon the benchmarks set by your child in the previous year, so plan carefully. In fact, get the help of your child to plan it out so that he feels committed to the goals as well. Analyse what went wrong the last year, and try to improve upon it.
2. Routines are Gold
You also need to ensure that there exists a routine in the case of doing the homework, right from the first day of school. Implementation of the routine means that the child is involved in what goes on in class each day, and learns whatever is being taught without any backlog. Within a few days of starting this practice, you will find that the routine becomes a part of his life and he has no qualms about doing the homework each day.
3. Give Power to Your Child
In some instances, the parents are in a hurry to finish the homework, so they end up doing most of the work themselves. Being a spectator with no contributions will not help the child in any way. In fact, it becomes counterproductive as they always think that you are there to bail them out. Therefore, ensure that you always put your child in command of the situation. Your child has to try to figure out the answers themselves, and you simple nudge him into the right direction whenever he strays.
4. Correct them Afterwards
Never be impatient when watching your child do his homework. For example, While he is writing an essay, let him complete it before pointing out the mistakes in it. You may notice a lot of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes when he writes it, but refrain from pointing it out while he writes them- interruptions in the process can lead to your child not learning well. You can explain each mistake after they are done so that they do not repeat those the next time over.
5. Set up Space
Your child must have a location within the home to do his homework in- it is equally important as setting a routine. With a safe space, he feels comfortable and can dive headfirst into the homework in front of him. It is imperative that he feels relaxed so that his concentration does not waver from work. You should ensure that your child is undisturbed when he is in this space- noise-cancelling headphones and setting up the table along a wall can also help your child focus well.
6. Choose a Time
This is an important part of setting up a routine, as it can affect the concentration levels of your child too. You need to make your child do his homework at this particular time so as to ensure that it becomes a routine to be followed every day. Choose the time according to both of your preferences- accommodate his wishes while choosing the time, too. Do not make him miss his favourite TV show in order to do his homework, as it can result in disdain and ultimately, lack of focus from the child.
7. Include Breaks
While you set up the homework time for your child, be sure to include a few breaks in between. Contrary to the popular misconception among parents, breaks do not reduce the productivity of their child- they improve it. Your child gets a few minutes to replenish his energy levels and is able to attack the problems in front of him anew. While setting up breaks during the study time, make sure to get your child’s input on how they should be. Some children may prefer periodic breaks, while others may prefer to take a break after each assignment and the likes.
8. Tell him your Expectations
Right from the time you start with homework for kindergarten children, you have to ensure that the child knows what is expected of him. Ensure that he knows what will happen if he fails to complete his work in time. Make it clear from the start, so that the onus is upon him to finish the homework. Do not get angry at him if he intentionally fails to complete his work- rather, discipline him by carrying out a preset activity, like reducing TV time or taking away his video games for a time.
9. Know the Teachers
You are not the only person who is involved in the academic development of your child- so it is highly recommended that you meet the teacher of your kid once in a while. Understand what the teacher expects from your child so that you can help him develop into that level. Also, get to know the homework policies of the teacher, so that you can tailor your home-routine around that.
10. Offer Rewards
If it is important to discipline the child for failing to complete the tasks in the given time, it is also equally important that you reward him when he completes his homework ahead of time. In the homework schedule that you set up, try to set up rewards and incentives so that your child exactly knows what he has to do in order to get his treats. Some of the most common rewards for young children include electronic gadgets, longer playtimes with his friends and even purchasing new video games at the end of the schedule.
It is important for parents to ensure that homework is perceived as a fun activity by their children, rather than monotonous chores. They have to be involved in the activities- after all, learning the topics underneath is the actual goal of giving homework to children.
