These are a few questions which every mom asks and seeks answers. As a mom, I am in the same boat too and often worry about my kids’ health and well-being. But over the years, I have learnt that it’s not about how well your child is growing physically or mentally. Actually, it’s about the holistic development of the child and by that it means, your child is developing in all spheres equally – Physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally or psychologically.
What Can You Do for the Holistic Development of Your Child?
There are three secrets which are very simple. But, before I share the secrets, I want to share something which I feel is very important for every mom to understand.
As they say, a happy mom means a happy child. It’s all about being patient and a stress-free mom for your kids to be happy and healthy. Also, kids need your love, attention, understanding and support. Spend quality time with them, talk to them, and show them you care. But remember, every child is unique and you have to keep that in mind in order to understand them better. A happy and healthy child will be a happy and healthy adult.
What are the Three Secrets to Raising Healthy Kids?
1. Good Sleep
It is the most underrated healthy habit and many parents don’t understand the importance of sleep. A good amount of sleep can help your child to stay active and do better in school as they have better attention, learning and memory. In other words, it affects their overall physical and mental health. Kids who sleep on time and sleep well are healthier, happier and successful too.
I have noticed a huge difference in my younger one’s behaviour and overall health after I realised it was due to lack of enough sleep. Now I make sure that my kids’ sleep for at least 7-8 hours every night. Also, following a routine helped us. Earlier on weekends, the whole routine would go upside down but now we make sure that kids follow the same sleeping pattern on weekends too.
2. Balanced Nutrition
This is one thing which most moms worry about – Fussy eaters/picky eaters. Many moms think that if their child is not finishing what’s on the plate, they are not getting enough nutrition. But the right thing is to focus on quality rather than quantity. I believe one should focus on giving a balanced meal to the child instead of focusing on how much they are eating.
Many times,moms feel that kids are not getting the right amount of nutrition from their daily diet. CT Scan In Pregnancy - Is It Risky?
A CT scan or a CAT scan is the common name for an imaging technique called Computed Axial Tomography scan. It is a procedure that uses a computer to combine several X-ray images to generate a cross-sectional, three-dimensional image of the internal organs of the body. Many women worry about CT scan during pregnancy side effects and their queries will be answered in this post. Beyond that, your doctor would be able to explain to you the risks and benefits of a CT scan if you ever need to have one.
Is It Safe to Perform CAT Scan during Pregnancy?
CAT scans use a focused beam of X-rays to generate imagery of the body and this high energy radiation does have the potential to cause harm to a foetus depending on its intensity and exposure range. Ionizing radiations such as X-rays are known carcinogens and their utilization has been speculated as a potential cause for the increase of cancer in developed countries. When CAT scans are performed during pregnancy, there is also concern about the carcinogenic and teratogenic effects of the ionizing radiation on the growing foetus. The highest risk, however, is for foetuses that are under 15 weeks old and at a radiation threshold greater than 50 mGy.
The risk goes up when the pregnant woman’s uterus comes under the field of scanning or a scan is performed in a region in the abdominal or pelvic cavity. When radiation shields are applied, scans expose the foetus to a dose of 1 mGY to 3.5 mGy or radiation. In contrast, the radiation exposure of foetuses from the background radiation (from the sun and space) is 0.5 to 1 mGy for a period of 9 months. The typical dosage the foetus is exposed to during a routine CAT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is about 25 mGy. CAT scans of the head or chest expose the foetus to almost no radiation. Advanced scanners with automated exposure control bring down the radiation exposure to 13 mGy.
Why Are CT Scans Performed?
Pregnant women can sometimes experience non-obstetrical conditions or emergencies that may require the use of CAT scans, some of these conditions include; renal colic, appendicitis, hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion, pulmonary embolism and trauma. The utilization of CAT scans in these instances is highly useful for diagnosis and sometimes maybe the only tool that can be used to gain a proper insight into the condition. CT scans form a three-dimensional image of the internal organs where doctors can get a clear picture of the exact cause of the problem.
The primary diagnostic tool for pregnant women is the ultrasound but it cannot always give detailed views of the organs. When the safer modes of scan such as ultrasound and MRI scans cannot give a definitive answer or there is a time constraint, CAT scans are used as the best imaging option. As a rule of thumb, CT scans are not recommended to pregnant women unless the benefits outweigh the risks of exposing the foetus to the radiation.
Risks of Getting a CAT Scan while Pregnant
Here are some of the common concerns about getting a CAT scan done during pregnancy.
A CT scan involves ionizing X-ray radiation that is a little higher than the ambient radiation we receive every day. The radiation dose from CT scans can be about 10 mSv which is about the same radiation the average person receives from the background radiation in 3 years.
CT scan while pregnant first trimester has the highest risk to the developing foetus due to the carcinogenic and teratogenic effects of the ionizing radiation.
An abdominal condition that requires a CAT scan exposes the foetus to high levels of radiation.
Can CAT Scan during Pregnancy Cause Cancer in The Child?
CAT scans use radiation levels that are very low to cause severe damage to the mother or the fetus. Most scans operate within the ranges of 10 to 25 mGy and the exposure needs to be higher to cause cancer. Teratogenic effects are known to occur when the exposure goes over the threshold of 50 mGy to 100 mGY. A single scan is not of concern; multiple scans raise the risk of radiation exposure. If the exposure goes over 100 mGy to 150 mGy, the risk is serious enough to consider an abortion of the fetus.
CAT scans carry with them some risk. Talk to your provider about the risk vs benefits if you ever need to have one.

Clams Roast
Clams roast is another delicacy of Kerala that is famous among malayalis. Leaving aside the laborious task of cleaning the clams, it tastes amazing and is pretty easy to prepare. Ingredients
1/2 kg clams, removed from shells
1 cup shallots, sliced
1/2 cup coconut cuts
2 sprigs curry leaves
5-6 garlic cloves, crushed
1 inch ginger, crushed
1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed
3 Nos green chilly, crushed
1/2 tsp fennel seeds powder
1/2 tsp red chilly flakes
1/2 tsp chilly powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder (optional)
1/2 tsp garam masala (optional)
1 tsp lemon juice
3 tbsp coconut oil
Salt to taste
Method
Step 1
Clean the clams well in plenty of water. Remove the greyish-black grit around each of them and clean until all the dirt is washed off. Squeeze the clams and keep them aside.
Step 2
Add lemon juice and salt to the clams. Mix well and keep aside.
Step 3
Heat oil in a pan. Add shallots and keep sauteing until it turns brown.
Step 4
Now, add coconut cuts and fry for sometime. Add all the crushed items - ginger, garlic, green chilly, curry leaves and mix well until it turns light brown. Also add crushed peppercorns and fennel powder. Keep sauteing.
Step 5
Add red chilly flakes, chilly powder and turmeric powder. Saute for 2 - 3 min. Add 1 -2 tbsp of water if required, as clams have enough water content. You don't want a runny consistency.
Step 6
Add clams to the pan. Blend it well and cook with closed lid on a medium flame for 15 - 20 min.
Step 7
Open the lid and add garam masala. Add a bit of oil and some more crushed pepper to it. Saute until it turns dry. Sprinkle a few curry leaves. Switch off the flame and serve hot with rice or appam.

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!
