8 Easy Tips For Teaching Self-Feeding To Your 7-9 Months Old Baby
Is your 7-9-month old baby showing interesting in feeding herself? Do you see her grabbing a spoon and taking it near the mouth all by herself? If you nodded along gladly, then you can encourage your little one’s self-feeding efforts with some simple tricks.
Lots of seven to nine months old babies show interest in eating their food by themselves; however, most of their attempts fail. That’s because your baby is too young to grasp and hold food pieces or a spoon in her hand. Some habits of your baby that tell she is trying to feed herself include:
Grasping food or objects with her hand’s palm
Bringing hand to mouth repeatedly
Grasping food using thumb and forefinger
Holding and playing with a spoon
Swallowing foods, besides liquids
Rubbing food between her fingers or in her hair
If you find your little one trying these activities, then you can be sure your baby is trying to succeed in her self-feeding efforts. So, it’s the right time to teach your dear little angel self-feeding with some engaging, simple tricks.
Here are eight helpful tips that can help improve your baby’s self-feeding efforts.
1. Introduce Finger Foods to Your Baby
Choose finger foods to encourage your baby’s self-feeding efforts. These foods are easy to consume, dissolve in your infant’s mouth easily, and don’t break to cause choking. Some of the nutritious finger foods that you can offer your 7 to 9 month old baby include:
Slices of fresh fruits, such as mango
Peeled apple and orange slices
Soft potato wedges
Cooked or steamed leafy greens and vegetables
Soft cooked pasta
Scrambled egg yolk
Petite toast points with soft, thin creamy cheese
Tofu cubs (soft)
Make sure you avoid raw vegetables as they are difficult for an infant to digest. Also, avoid sugary snacks, such as cakes and biscuits. Most importantly, since your baby’s chewing skills are not fully developed yet, never leave your baby unsupervised while she attempts to self-feed. This will prevent the risk of choking.
2. Hone Your Baby’s Pincer Skills
Your baby’s pincer skills are not well-developed when she is 7 to 9 months old, so you might find your little one grabbing food using her fist or her entire palms. A little encouragement can help her. Hone your baby’s pincer skills during playtime. Spread out some easy-to-grab toys or plastic rings around your little one and show her how to pick them up with your thumb and fingers one at a time. Hold your baby’s thumb and index finger with your hand and teach her to pick the rings. This will hone her pincer grasp and help her grab the food easily.
3. Provide Baby a Suitable Spoon
Even though you can find different shapes and sizes of baby spoons in the market, angled spoons with bulky rubber grips are the most suitable for a 7-9-months-old baby. These spoons support self-feeding efforts. Your little one can grab them tightly and aim the food in the angled spoon to her mouth easily.
4. Encourage Hand-Eye Co-ordination
Teach your 7-9-months-old baby to scoop cereal in her spoon. Train your baby to hold a fork and stab a green bean. Guide your little one to move a semi-liquid filled cup or bowl near her mouth. Practicing these techniques will help improve your baby’s hand-eye co-ordination skills and promote successful self-feeding attempts.
5. Serve In Bowls With Suction Cups At Bottom
Choose to serve food in a baby bowl that has a suction cup at its bottom to help it stick firmly to your baby’s table or high chair while your baby eats from the bowl. Serving your baby in such a cup will improve her concentration in scooping the food out of the steady bowl.
6. Involve Baby In Family Meals
Even if it may not suit in your baby’s scheduled feeding, try to involve your baby in your family mealtimes at least once daily i.e. either during your lunch or dinner. Babies are good observers. So, your baby can observe you and other family members’ eating style during mealtimes and follow the same.
7. Support Independent Feeding
Allow your baby to be an active participant during her mealtime. Even if she may mess around a bit, encouraging independent efforts to take food or a cup near the mouth by herself will promote her self-feeding efforts. You can provide your baby lidded beakers or mugs to let them drink water or milk on their own. Initially, support the lidded beaker with your hands and train your baby to take it near her mouth to drink. Similarly, spread small, easy-to-grasp soft cookies in front of your little one and guide her to grab and take them near her mouth on her own. Practice independent feeding or drinking a few times daily, and you will find your baby succeeding in her self-feeding efforts soon.
8. Be Patient
Last, but not the least, be patient. You may find your baby banging the food tray, spilling the food, and creating a mess as she learns to eat on her own. But don’t lose your cool. Be patient. Give your baby plenty of time; let her continue self-feeding efforts till she succeeds. You may need to do a big cleaning task at end of her meal, but be calm.
Did you teach your 7-9 month-old to eat on her own? Which tricks did you try to encourage your baby’s self-feeding efforts? Share your experience with other new moms by leaving a comment below. Read more

Urinary Incontinence during Pregnancy
Not spoken about very often, one of the side effects of pregnancy and childbirth is the leaking of urine much to the dismay of expectant mothers. Urinary incontinence or leaking of urine at unexpected times can affect mothers when they experience a cough, laugh or sneeze. But it is certainly not something to be embarrassed about as it affects 30%-50% of new mothers and is extremely common.
What is Pregnancy Incontinence?
Soon after you conceived you find that you experience difficulty with bladder control during pregnancy. Don’t panic or be embarrassed! It is only going to get worse during the last trimester when your growing baby exerts pressure on your bladder. Bladder incontinence in pregnancy can be annoying and frustrating, yet it is quite common. You urinate when the muscles around your urethra relax, allowing the urine to flow, and after urination the muscles contract, holding the urine flow until you are ready to empty your bladder again. The fluctuation of hormones during pregnancy and the pressure exerted by the uterus on the bladder interferes with the normal way the urethra relaxes and contracts. This leads to stress, and you may urinate when you exercise, laugh, walk, run or even cough.
What Types of Incontinence are Experienced During and After Pregnancy?
There are several types of incontinence experienced during and after pregnancy:
Stress Incontinence - Stress incontinence in pregnancy, the most common during pregnancy, is the loss of urine owing to increased physical pressure on the bladder. The bladder sphincter, a muscular valve which controls the flow of urine is stressed owing to pressure on the bladder by the uterus during pregnancy. Urine leaks out of the bladder when additional pressure is exerted especially when a woman coughs, sneezes or laughs.
Urgency Incontinence - Women with an overactive bladder also have urinary incontinence during pregnancy. Their bladders have uncontrollable spasms which affect the urethra preventing it from controlling urine due to strong contractions. This kind of incontinence can be experienced after childbirth as the pelvic muscles weaken owing to an episiotomy or long labour.
Mixed Incontinence – Urgency incontinence along with stress
Transient Incontinence - A medication that you take could cause temporary loss of urine
What are the Causes of Pregnancy Incontinence?
The bladder rests right above the pelvic bones supported by the pelvic floor. The bladder relaxes and fills with urine through the day with the sphincter keeping it closed until you can use the washroom. During pregnancy and childbirth, the pelvic muscles are put through a lot of tests due to several causes.
Weight
Weight is a major contributor to stress related incontinence. By the third trimester, the uterus is resting on the bladder and its supporting ligaments causing them and the surrounding muscles to stretch. Any physical movement puts extra pressure on the bladder causing stress incontinence.
2. Hormones
Pregnancy is nothing but a frenzy of fluctuating hormones. These changes affect the bladder lining and the urethra. The hormones make your tissues and joints more elastic to prepare for delivery, in turn, weakening the muscles that control the bladder from releasing urine.
3. Constipation
Pregnancy more often than not is characterized by constipation which puts a strain on the pelvic floor causing incontinence.
4. Medical history
Women who suffer from diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or have had a stroke in the past could also suffer from incontinence.
5. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
More than 40% of women do not treat their UTI’s completely, and it is one of the major symptoms of incontinence.
Post-childbirth, especially during vaginal delivery, prolonged pushing could damage the nerves. This contributes to incontinence during pregnancy.
Which Pregnant Women are Most at the Risk of Experience Urinary Incontinence?
Some women are at an added risk of suffering from incontinence during pregnancy
Conceived at an older age
Over-weight or obesity
Have had a vaginal delivery before
Have had a pelvic surgery
Smoking as it could lead to a chronic cough
How is the Diagnosis Done?
When you reach the final weeks of pregnancy, leaking urine may be confused with leaking amniotic fluid. A doctor is the best person to ascertain the cause. If there are no signs of labour or infection, a doctor may perform other tests. A doctor may conduct a bladder stress test to see if you leak when coughing or exert pressure on the body. A bladder scan using ultrasound also helps to determine if the bladder is emptying itself completely. There could also be chances that you may be suffering from UTI which needs to be treated.
Treatment for Urinary Incontinence in Pregnancy
Lifestyle changes and bladder management are the effective first lines of treatment for pregnancy incontinence. Some useful tips:
Do the Kegels:
Aim to do five sets of Kegel exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor. The best part is these exercises help your pelvis during and after labour too.
2. Bladder training:
To practice timed voiding, use a chart and record your urinating times and intervals. Start with retraining your bladder. Start with visiting the toilet every hour for a certain period of time. Then change the schedule by increasing the duration. Eventually, you can change it to a comfortable time limit to empty your bladder.
3. Cut down on caffeine or carbonated drinks:
Caffeine and fizzy drink may make you want to visit the toilet often. Drink more water or decaffeinated drinks instead.
4. Reduce liquid intake at night:
Limit the number of beverages in the evening to avoid frequent trips to the bathroom or leaking at night.
5. Eat a fibre rich diet:
A fibre rich diet reduces constipation thereby reducing stress on your pelvic floor.
6. Control your weight:
Extra weight around your abdomen increases pressure on the bladder. Try to control your increase weight by doing exercises and leading an active lifestyle.
7. Medications and devices:
Sometimes, doctors suggest the use of devices to block the urethra and block the pelvic muscles. Doctors also prescribe medication to muscle spasms in the bladder or an overactive bladder.
Kegel Exercises to Control Urinary Incontinence
Kegel exercises are a proven technique to control urinary incontinence during pregnancy. The exercises help to tighten and strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor region. Strong pelvic floor muscles improve the function of the urethra and the bladder sphincter which controls the flow of urine.
To locate your Kegel muscles, start by sitting on the toilet and urinating. Stop urinating mid-stream, and the muscles that you use to stop the flow of urine are the Kegel muscles. Alternatively, insert a finger into the vagina and try to get the muscles to tighten around your finger.
How to perform the exercises:
Relax the muscles in your abdomen, thighs and glutes
Tighten the pelvic floor muscles
Count 10 until you hold the muscles
Count 10 after you relax the pelvic floor muscles
It is recommended to do these exercises 10 times in the morning, afternoon and night. These can be done anywhere - at your desk, in the car while driving or even on your sofa.
Prevention
There is no definitive way to prevent urinary urgency in pregnancy. However, there are few exercises that can help gain some control over the pelvic muscles to control urine discharge. Regular Kegel exercises help to train the bladder and control flow of urine. Try to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles which are not only important when you are pregnant but even otherwise. Pelvic floor muscles sag if not used regularly so it is helpful if you practice exercises that will strengthen the muscles.
When to Consult a Doctor
Consult a doctor if you experience urinary incontinence during early pregnancy. This is to rule out any possibility of urinary infection that could lead to further problems. Urinary incontinence will definitely set in during the later stages of pregnancy and last for a few weeks after delivery too. However, if you suffer from incontinence for six weeks after delivery, be sure to get checked.
Most women dismiss a few drops of leakage of urine as nothing to worry about or shy away from discussing incontinence with the doctor. If you find that incontinence is hindering your daily routine during or after pregnancy, seek immediate help from the doctor. In the meanwhile, practice suggested techniques to minimize risk and embarrassing encounters owing to incontinence and unexpected leaks.

How to Decorate Room Shared by Siblings
Decorating a room that is shared by siblings can be quite a task. The trick is to accommodate the interests of your children. There are few siblings’ room decorating ideas that will help mom's maximise their kids’ room space and give it a personal touch along the way.
Let's admit it, decorating a room shared by siblings is a bigger challenge than making the crème brulee Le Cordon Bleu your mom-in-law loves. You have to rack your brain and decide whether the room deserves a cohesive look or it needs to be decorated on a share-share basis that gives each kid their own little space? While the room’s size will influence your final call, here are some tips to set you in the right direction.
Shared Room Decorating Ideas
1. Free hand
Most kids know what they want, and are not afraid to ask. In such a scenario it would be best to let them decide the decor for their room. Letting them decide on a wall colour or allowing them to choose the bed wouldn't suffice. When you give your children free reign to choose the decor for their shared room, they will be able to express their creativity and connect better as roommates too. It's their living space after all, why shouldn’t they have a say in what they want? So, if you ever want to learn how to decorate siblings’ room, just simply let your kids take charge and watch them do up the room in whatever they both think fit.
2. Shelf to the rescue
If your kids are among those who are fierce about their privacy, although staying in the same room, you can give it to them. You can use a drywall partition with shelves on either side to divide the room into two halves. This will ensure privacy for each child. Each side of the shelf can be occupied by your kids to stack their books, toys, and stationery. This will also help in saving up space in the room. You can paint the shelves in their favourite colours. However, do remember this is one of those siblings' room decorating ideas that go well with large rooms!
3. Shared theme
If your kids are in favour of sharing the same theme for their bedroom or don't mind having the same bedding, then you can decorate their rooms by first taking care of the walls. You could use wallpaper that both kids agree on or paint the wall in a colour that both think cool. You can add accessories like fans, table lamps, bedsheets with vivid cartoon characters painted on them. Alternatively, you can paint all the walls with a solid colour barring one and encourage your children to draw or paint on that plain wall for a unique personal touch they'll be proud to flaunt.
4. Twin theme
Kids these days have a mind of their own. They do not want two different themes but want their individual space. If you have twins, a girl and a boy, you can divide the room into a ‘pink’ and ‘blue’ section. For the girl's section add white and pink frills and lace to a pink four post bed, set up a doll house, and add pop pink curtains for a saccharine sweet look. For the boy's section, you can incorporate a maritime theme. You could do this by installing a rowboat shaped bed with a wood finish, striped curtains, and lighthouse themed wallpaper to let your boy enjoy a full blown nautical feel. This will ensure that both kids remain happy with their section of the room. This is one of the best sibling room ideas to employ for a not too large room.
5. Accessorise right
In order to decorate a shared bedroom, one must think smart. Choose furniture that both kids can share and which doesn't cram the room too. Think of collapsible table and chair sets, foldable beds, and easy to move settees. Ensure that the furniture matches the overall room decor and is gender neutral. Opt for an ivory coloured bunk bed and go for yellow and white striped panelled walls. Place an oversized durrie in navy for an energetic contrast in the room. Get a foldable study table with two small bean bags thrown in. This wouldn't just keep both the children happy, but will give them ample space to move around too.
These bedroom ideas for siblings sharing rooms will ensure that your kids stay happy and in harmony with each other. Whether you give your child's room a sea chart wallpaper or add a superhero cupboard, a little personalisation will go a long way in keeping them happy and squabble free. Read more

Modern Style Dos and Don'ts when you're Expecting
Following trending styles during pregnancy is a good thing, but it should never be at the risk of feeling uncomfortable. Instead, focus on comfort and ensure that the styles and clothes you choose suit the changes your body will undergo in the nine months to come!
Eager to try on a pretty jumpsuit or a sheer dress when pregnant? While there's nothing stopping you from giving it a try, it may not be the best idea. Instead, choose a style that suits your personal taste and flatters your figure. Listed below are some major fashion dos and modern style don'ts when pregnant:
Modern Style Do's When You're Expecting
Loose-fitting clothes including dresses and tops can be your new best friends. Choose stylish maternity clothes that suit your body and highlight your curves.
Opting for darker shades is always a smart choice. They can help slim your frame and accentuate your best features. A maxi dress in inky black should be a staple in every mom-to-be's wardrobe.
Choose dresses and tops that don't hug the waistline. Balloon and blouson tops are trending and will fit into your wardrobe perfectly.
Softer fabrics will skim seamlessly over your baby bump. Stylish maternity clothes in chiffon are a good choice owing to the fluidity of the fabric. Kurtis and tops that are made from similar light materials are wonderful to wear especially on warm days.
If you have glowing skin, show it off with a good moisturiser, a couple of coats of mascara, a dab of lip gloss, and a few sprays of your favourite perfume before heading out. Keep the make-up subtle, even on special occasions. You want your complexion to steal the spotlight!
Pregnancy can take its toll on you, so take time to pamper yourself at least once a week. A walk, a massage and even a facial at the salon can really lift your spirits. You deserve these little treats!
Timeless accessories like tote bags, statement necklaces and open-toed sandals can amp up your outfits easily. Splurge on them once in a while to feel fabulous.
Modern Style Don'ts When You're Expecting
Try not to force yourself into clothes that fit you pre-pregnancy. Adapting to your new figure is important.
Mid-rise pants are a fabulous option when jeans are just too tough to get into. They're comfortable to wear and look very stylish.
Don't go for tops that are several sizes too large. Instead, opt for printed tunics and kaftans that are elegant and timeless.
Avoid wearing clothes that have a slim fit as they may pinch and nip you.
Keep racy underwear like thongs at the bottom of your lingerie drawer as they can be uncomfortable to wear when pregnant. You can always go back to them post pregnancy.
Taking heed of this list of style dos and don'ts during pregnancy will help any new mom to stay on trend. It will also help you dress for your new figure. With these minor tweaks to your wardrobe, you're sure to make waves with your incredible style during pregnancy. Read more

What items should you carry to the hospital when you leave for delivery
Based on my experience, I'll tell you what one must carry when going for a delivery. However, I suggest you make a list of all the items you think you must carry. When you pack you bags, check each item in the list. Or if someone else is packing the bags for you, just handover the list to them.
The first thing you must carry without fail is your documents. These include hospital records, id proofs, medical insurance id proofs and if possible note down phone number or email id of the point of contact for medical insurance (if you have plans to claim)
Next, pack bags for both the mother and the newborn baby. So here is what you would most likely need.
If you are planning to get your delivery done at a multispeciality hospital you might not need to carry any or most of these items. Because, big hospitals do provide all these. However, in a mediocre hospital, you might want to carry these
A basket/ A bag for keeping clothes and essentials of both the baby and the mother.
Stuffs for the mother:
Clothes: It is best to carry feeding gowns. Wearing a pyjama/leggin especially if you have undergone a C-section atleast for the first 2-3 days would be extremely difficult. During winters and rainy you may also want to carry sweaters
Inners: Carry some inners. It is best to carry old ones so that incase if they are stained due to heavy bleeding or so you can just dispose them
Pads: This is most probably provided by the hospital. But some hospitals only provide pad that look like a heap of cotton. If you wish, you can buy post delivery pads
Toiletries: You would need items like your soap, brush, toothpaste, comb during your stay in the hospital
Slippers and socks: You may want to carry your slippers. Keep a pair of socks handy especially when the weather is cold
Breastpads: It is likely that your breasts are full milk may ooze out from your breasts making all your clothes wet. This is irritating and causes discomfort. You may want to buy breastpads
Sanitizer: You may need a sanitizer
Stuffs for the baby:
Baby clothes: Your newborn would need some clothes to put on. It is best to buy, wash with a mild soap and some dettol and dry the clothes
Diapers, wipes and rash creams: Now its a choice you make for your baby. Even so using diapers while in hospital is a wise choice. Most parents are skeptical when it comes to usage of diapers because they think it causes rashes. However, this is a myth. If used appropriately, diapers do not cause rashes
Swaddle sheets: Babies cant just fall off to sleep in this new environment. From a very comforting and secure environment when they step out, they need to feel secure. Swaddling is the best thing to do for your baby to sleep peacefully. You can buy swaddle sheets online or use cotton dupattas as swaddle sheets
Toiletries: Oil, soaps, lotions. You can just buy a baby set which has all these items
Towels: After bathing your baby, you would need towels to dry your baby
Dettol
A bowl and a small spoon
All or most of the above items might be provided by your healthcare facility. It is best to talk to your healthcare provider to know more. Some parents however, want to carry items by themselves for them and their newborns.
Stuffs for the bystander:
Your husband or mother might be accompanying you during your stay in the hospital. They may want to carry their essentials too. It is best to keep their items in a separate bag.
Last minute packing:
1. Mobile phone and charger
2. Camera (optional) Read more
