Oops, 10 Things It's Best Not To Say In Front of Your Indian Mother-in-Law
Mother-in-law! How does the word make you feel? Happy, scared, irritated, angry, anxious, nervous or a mix of all this? Your MIL may be the sweetest human being on the planet, but as per unofficial statistics, 81.5% women have some or the other worries about their MILs! These start before they get married and the mother in law problems continue for ever and ever!
Jokes aside, we are a culture that has always seen in-laws in a light of respect, obedience, but also some dread. Can the MIL ever be like your own mother? How should you talk to her and how should you not? Times may have changed, but trust us, there are some things that are still best left unsaid to an Indian saasu ma.
We spoke to moms around us and put together this list of things you should avoid saying to your mother-in-law.
Unwise Things to Say to Your Mother in Law
Disclaimer: The points mentioned in this article are meant in jest and not intended to offend anyone. Much love to mothers-in-law; we may fight with them, criticise them, and tell tales about them, but most of us know deep within – they will be there for us when we need them.
1. I’m Thinking of Going to My Parents’ Home
You mean maayka? Didn’t you know your husband’s house is now your house, and that family you grew up with for some twenty years is now paraaya (stranger). It’s another story that your sister-in-law keeps coming to visit every now and then and even stays for as long as a month. But she’s the daughter of the house; you are the daughter-in-law. Why one earth would YOU want to visit your parent’s home?
Tip: Many of us have experienced – some MILs are happy to let us go when they feel we don’t really want to. So, next time you’re planning on going, don’t look too interested, or just suggest that you'd rather go another time. Chances are, she will give you ‘permission’!

2. Could I Wear a Dress to the Function?
Why? Where are all your sarees and salwar kameez? Good Indian bahus don’t wear Western clothes to functions. Even actresses like Priyanka Chopra are criticised for wearing dresses when they go for functions like meeting important people.
[caption id="attachment_178078" align="aligncenter" width="328"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
3. I’m Not Ready to Have a Baby Yet
Listen, it’s very important to do everything according to the right age. There is a right age to get married, to have children, to live, and to die. If you delay pregnancy so much, your body will give up and then how will your in-laws get their waaris (heir)?
[caption id="attachment_178079" align="aligncenter" width="245"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
4. I’m Not Good at Cooking; Can I Keep a Maid?
Wait, you are a housewife, right? Why does a housewife need a maid? Even working women need to cook for their family; it is their prime resposnibility. Didn’t your mother teach you how to cook?
Many MILs can competently whip up 7-course-meals from starters to desserts, so this one will have her totally judging you.
[caption id="attachment_178081" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
5. My Mom Never Cooked It Like That…
Oh, it gets worse and worse! When you move into a new family, the new methods and lifestyles are what you need to adopt. So, if your mother added onions to the oil first and your MIL adds garlic first, you know whose rule holds ground. Talking about this is a leading source of conflict with mother in law, fellow moms report!
[caption id="attachment_178082" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
6. These Saas-Bahu Serials Are Such a Waste of Time
Excuse us, but they are NOT! If they were a waste of time, would they be running for years and years? Would every MIL know the serial theme song, when it played, and when the reruns were? These serials with their fantastic storylines, amazing fashion tips, and larger than life characters are what Indian culture and good bahus are all about. Oh yes, good saas too.
[caption id="attachment_178085" align="aligncenter" width="350"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
7. I Think That Saree Looks a Bit Tacky
Haww, did you even know that saree your MIL picked out for the wedding, or gave you as a gift, was modelled from a saas bahu serial? Those shows are ace when it comes to fashion sense, and if you find it tacky, there has to be some deficit in your perception as far as fashion is concerned. To avoid mother in law trouble, simple solution would be to steer clear of such fashion talk.
[caption id="attachment_178087" align="aligncenter" width="270"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
8. I Really Miss My Family…
So, you’re unhappy in your husband’s house? Your in-laws mistreat you? No? Then there is no legit reason for missing your family! This is a common sentiment especially in a controlling mother in law.
[caption id="attachment_178089" align="aligncenter" width="485"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
9. I Will Raise My Baby The Way I Like
Your MIL has a lot of experience of raising kids. Her kid is now your husband and what a fine man he is! That said, it is a distant dream if you think you’ll raise your baby minus interference and mother in law advice. Unless, of course, if you are among the lucky few whose MILs are helpful without being overbearing. A lot of us simply end up in awkward positions when we can neither accept nor refuse what our MIL has to suggest for the baby – from nappies to first foods.
[caption id="attachment_178090" align="aligncenter" width="250"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
10. I Understand What My Husband Wants
This one is extremely delicate. So, of course you know your husband, but can you know him better than the one who gave him birth, potty trained him, saw him through schooling and college, and consented to marry him off? Whatever the answer to that is, it really is best not to challenge authorities on this one. Let your husband bask in the glory of love from both the lovely ladies in his life!
[caption id="attachment_178094" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Have you said any of these things to your MIL yet? We bet you have – some of them cannot really be avoided, no? While some of us are blessed to have MILs who see us just as their own daughters, others have a hard time figuring out how to deal with mother in law issues. Read more

Eclipse and Pregnancy - Is It Harmful for Pregnant Women?
An eclipse is a natural phenomenon like a sunset and a sunrise. The Earth and its moon are in constant motion. Thus, they are bound to cross over each other at some point in time.
What Is an Eclipse?
An eclipse occurs when a star or planet is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another astronomical object or having another object pass between it and the viewer.
What Is a Lunar Eclipse?
When the earth is in between its moon and the sun, a lunar eclipse occurs.
Can a Lunar Eclipse Harm Your Baby in the Womb?
It's believed that an eclipse has bad effects on pregnant women. However, there is no scientific proof to support this belief.
How Age-Old Beliefs Affect Pregnancy
If you avoid eating and drinking during an eclipse, it can cause dehydration and have adverse effects on you and your baby. This can also increase your blood pressure, affecting your baby’s health.
If you notice these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.
Dizzy spells
Severe headache
Fainting
Acidity
What Is a Solar Eclipse?
When the Earth's moon comes in between it and the sun, it's called a solar eclipse.
Can a Solar Eclipse Harm Your Foetus?
It's believed that gazing at the sky during an eclipse can cause miscarriage or deformities. However, there are no studies that support this.
Myth vs Fact
We do the myth-busting for you and tell you the facts here:
1. Myth: Stay Indoors and Don’t Look at the Sun
Fact: Turns out, the elders were right with this one! Pregnant women shouldn't look at an eclipse with naked eyes because:
The sun’s radiation during an eclipse is harmful.
It can affect the exposure that your retina will have to the intense visible light of the sun.
This can cause retinal burns and damage to the light-sensitive rods and cone cells.
2. Myth: Don't Cook, Eat or Drink During an Eclipse
Fact: This is true. The sun rays can't reach the Earth during an eclipse, causing a drop in the temperature. This causes bacteria, microbes, and harmful germs to multiply.
Neither solar eclipse nor lunar eclipse have any effect on your pregnancy. Whether to follow the generation-old beliefs and customs is your choice.

Teaching Toddlers To Sit in a Chair
Encouraging toddlers to sit on chair can be a daunting task for parents. Since they're so energetic and easily distracted, it's tough getting them to listen. However, it's important to start teaching them to sit still as it enforces discipline and teaches them when to play and when not to.
Toddlers can get very fidgety and uncomfortable when they’re asked to sit still and behave for a while. It can send parents into frustration, trying hard to keep their patience! Yet, there are times when you really want kids to sit still and quietly especially when out at a restaurant with the family, or when there are guests at home. How does one achieve this? Let’s find out.
When Can Toddlers Sit in a Chair By Themselves?
Toddlers between 20-24 months old are usually capable of sitting in a chair by themselves. Some children might even start earlier than that. It’s believed that as soon as a toddler is able to pull himself up from his sleeping position to a wobbly sitting posture, he’s ready to be trained to sit on a chair. However, making a 24-month-old toddler sit still is another matter! He’s full of energy and wants to explore everything. Fortunately, it’s not impossible and with a few hints, you should be able to succeed!
Tips for Teaching Toddlers to Sit on a Chair
Make your toddler practice sitting still, even if without a chair. You can also make a game out of it and challenge him to sit still for as long as possible, and reward him with an incentive like a little chocolate. Start by making him sit on your lap, and then move on to a chair. If he has older siblings, ask them to play too.
When teaching him to sit still, don’t play with him as he’ll get distracted.
Try reading his favourite book or story while he sits on the chair. Tell him that you’ll read him a tale only if he sits quietly.
Encourage artistic activities like drawing and painting. Make sure that your child has access to a table or some hard, flat surface for this activity.
Praise his good behaviour. You’ll see that he gets more eager to sit when he associates it with something positive.
Start to observe silent moments, especially during meal times, more frequently than you normally do. This will encourage your toddler to keep quiet like the rest of the family. Children learn what they see adults do, and when your child witnesses everyone in the family keeping quiet, he’ll be more inclined to do the same.
If your 24-month-old refuses to sit on a chair, it could that he’s uncomfortable. A conventional wooden chair might make his back sore and painful, so use soft cushions or have him sit on an upholstered one.
With toddlers, the best course is to have a plan and a lot of patience. They’ll learn how to sit on a chair gradually. You can’t force it. Consistency is very important too. You must make your tot practice sitting still every day otherwise he won’t get used to it. What practices do you adopt to make your toddler sit quietly? Read more

Strategies for Apologizing to the Kids
Most of the parents do not realise the importance of saying, “I am sorry” to their children. It may be because of the culture we live in where adults do not admit their fault even though it’s clearly visible. Few words like ‘I am sorry’ may have a huge impact on a child.
When parents apologise to their children, they are not only cementing their relationship with them but also instilling a belief that it’s okay to make mistakes, but at the same time, it’s important to accept them and apologise for them. It is said that, “ It’s not about the mistake, but how you handle it” makes all the difference.
Children learn from parents, when parents acknowledge their mistakes and take responsibility for their actions, the children also do the same. This behaviour of parents can teach their children some very important lessons of life:
1. Making Mistakes is Not Being Weak
Children should know that all human beings are not perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Accepting your mistakes and asking for forgiveness is a sign of strength and one must take the responsibility of the same.
2. Lying Makes the Mistake Bigger
Some children lie in order to escape the punishment or scolding they might get for committing a mistake. But teaching them to apologise makes them understand that saying a lie is worse than making a mistake.
3. Developing Self-Esteem
When parents admit their fault, they are indirectly telling their kids that they are ready to face the consequences of their actions. This, in turn, makes kids bold enough to admit that they have made a mistake, which is essential to develop their self-esteem.
4. Mistakes are a Great Learning Opportunity
There are many things, in life, which we fail to do. But these things teach us valuable lessons for our future. Failures and mistakes are a great source of learning. They not only teach good things, but also help us in facing life challenges and taking up risks.
5. Keeping Your Word
Children notice and understand easily when their parents make mistakes, act wrongly and do not acknowledge their mistakes. So be very careful that you set correct examples for your children to learn from. Try practising the right things if you want your children to understand the difference between right and wrong.
How to Apologise
Apologise for your behaviour, not for yourself. You might tell your child, “ I am sorry for my behaviour, and I don’t like what I said.”
Explain them why you lost your temper.
Discuss with them what you didn’t like about their behavior, what instigated this reaction and how they are expected to behave next time.
Next time when you are caught in a similar situation, try to talk it out in a light tone like “so you want me to get crazy again?”
No parent is perfect, and everyone needs improvement. Think about the ways of delaying with your anger. Either just sit quietly and watch their tantrums or simply move out of the room. Just try to be calm and then talk to your child about it.
When parents overcome their ego and fear, and apologise for their mistakes, they are in a way helping their children to develop the ability of learning from mistakes. This also makes them a good and responsible individual. Read more

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. Please do not take any medicine without consulting with your gynaecologist. It is advisable to get yourself evaluated by a doctor and follow doctors advise properly. You can also book online doctor’s appointment on FirstCry where the doctor can help you and guide you properly.
Thanks and take care
