18 Months Old Baby Growth and Development
Your little bundle of joy is now 18 months old! All you can see him doing is roaming around in the house all day long. This is a very confusing time for both the toddler and the parents because for you he is still your little baby, but as far as your toddler is concerned, he thinks himself to be independent and all ready to explore the world. Here in the following article, we shall discuss what is going on in terms of growth and development in your 18-month-old baby.
18 Month Old Toddler's Development
You may have noticed that your toddler may not be growing at a lightning fast speed in comparison to his first year. The growth is happening but at a slower pace and here are some common 18-month milestones that your baby may achieve:
Physical Development
There are many physical changes that are happening with your baby. Your 18 months baby weight can range from 22.4 to 26 pounds in boys and 20.8 to 24.5 pounds in girls.
Your baby is able to run.
Your baby is able to catch and throw a ball.
Your baby is able to climb up and down the stairs by holding your hand.
Your baby is able to scribble with colours and crayons.
Your baby may even remove his own clothes.
Your baby is able to sip from his drinking cup and may even feed himself.
Your baby is able to pull out toys for playing while moving around.
Social and Emotional Development
Your toddler is feeling and experiencing various emotions at this age and here are some of the skills that your baby may have developed by 18 months of age:
Your baby is able to express love and affection.
Your baby may throw tantrums when upset or anxious.
Your baby is all curious by this age and wishes to explore everything around him.
Your baby may become too attached to you and exhibit separation anxiety symptoms.
Your baby may show his annoyance and displeasure.
Your baby may laugh and giggle as a response to others.
Cognitive and Language Development
You will notice following cognitive and language developmental skills in your 18-month-old baby:
Your baby understands and responds to one-word verbal commands.
Your baby is able to speak 10 to 20 words.
Your baby can relate to his body parts and can even point at them when asked to do.
Your baby remembers his favourite toys.
Your baby is a copycat and may imitate your actions such as talking on the phone etc.
Your baby can match up similar objects.
Your baby may identify actions or objects in a picture book.
Behaviour
Your toddler is becoming more aware and adamant by this age, and he knows how he can get his way through. Your baby has a stronger will by this time and may fuss and throw tantrums if he does get what he wants. He also knows how to gain your attention. You may still be using a diaper for your baby, but this is a right time to start toilet training. He may even want to copy elder siblings by wanting to sit on the potty seat.
Food and Nutrition
Your toddler is growing and so are his nutritional needs. You can make him sit on his baby seat and have meals with rest of the family members. Even if your baby does not eat much on his own or plays with food at the family meal time, he is learning that he has to eventually do this as he grows up. Try not to pay attention or heed if he is not eating while sitting with rest of the family members and appreciate when he finishes his meal. This way he will know what is he expected to do.
Make sure you include all food groups in your baby’s diet plan. By this age, your baby requires three main meals and two to three snacks in a day. It is also advisable to include full-fat milk for better brain development. If your baby resents certain food items, do not force-feed. But make sure you introduce that food item after a few days in another form.
If your baby is still on a bottle, now is the time to switch to the Sippy cup. Also if you baby is lactose intolerant, you may try giving soy milk to your baby. Be careful about food allergies and therefore it is recommended to try one food item at a time to see how your baby reacts to it.
Sleeping
Some parents may find it extremely difficult to put their toddler to sleep. This is because he is so excited to explore everything around him that sleep holds last priority. Your baby may be tired and exhausted but still, deny going to sleep. Under such circumstances, the best thing that you can do is to remove or reduce the distractions at the time of sleep. Also, make a sleep schedule and stick to it, so that the baby knows what time every day he is expected to rest and sleep. Do not put TV, loud music or have other siblings to cause any kind of distraction.
All said and done, the sleep pattern of your baby is not that bad, it is just how you perceive and plan it. Your baby may be sleeping for approximately 10 to 11 hours at night and maybe taking two to three short naps during the day. Make sure you stick to your baby’s sleep schedule so that your baby gets in the habit of sleeping on time.
Play and Activities
All your toddler wants to do by this age is play all day long. He wants to play with you, his siblings and even your pet. But the concern here is that your toddler gets bored too soon and then fusses over it. How can you engage your child in a manner that he is happy and cheerful? Here we have some exciting and fun activities that you can engage your toddler in:
Be On The Line: Make a line using duct tape or coloured chalk on the floor and ask your baby to walk straight on it. If he fumbles say few words to pep up his confidence. This is a very good game to help your kid work on his muscle control and balance.
Throw The Ball In The Bucket: This is a great activity to enhance your toddles fine motor skills and also keep him occupied fruitfully. You may play this game indoors or even outdoors. Make a line and make your baby stand behind the line. Place a bucket (preferably with a wide mouth) approximately 3 feet away from your baby and help him throw the ball into the bucket.
Passing The Ball: Kids of all age groups love to play with a ball. Your baby can never get bored or tired of playing with a ball. You may sit on the floor with your baby and keep passing the ball to each other. You can bring in variations in this game by tipping the ball on the floor or by throwing the ball at different heights.
Treasure Box: This is a very exciting activity to help your toddler work upon his memory skills. You can place his favourite toy in a box with other toys and ask him to go and find it. This game will be extremely exciting for your baby.
Make Some Music: You may buy various musical instruments such as a drum, xylophone, rattles etc. for your baby and play the instruments with your baby. Rather it will be more fun if the whole family comes together and enjoy this activity together. Your baby will learn about music, coordination and rhythm with this activity.
There are many games and activities like this that you can plan with your toddler.
Tips for Parents
Here are some tips for the parents of 18-month-old babies:
It is very important to take care of the nutritional needs of your baby. If your baby is a fussy eater or he is not gaining weight, seek your doctor’s advice on the same.
Make a comfortable and cosy sleeping place for your baby and remove all possible distractions. Your baby is exerting too much during the day and thus requires a peaceful night’s sleep to be able to start afresh the next day.
Make your make your baby wear shoes whenever he steps out of the house.
Do not miss any of your baby’s routine check-ups with the doctor and get all his vaccinations on time.
It is very important to toilet train your baby by this age, however, do not force or embarrass your baby.
It is important that you try and instil some simple rules and discipline for your toddler. Do not succumb to all his demands and tell him NO, once in a while. If he throws tantrums, try and ignore.
Be careful with your kid around pets. He is not old enough to handle animals and may cause harm to the animal or himself.
If you are still breastfeeding your baby and both you and your baby are comfortable with it, then there is no reason to stop.
Consult a Doctor if
The above-mentioned parameters are some commonly achieved parameters by the toddlers of this age. However, it is not necessary that every kid follows the same time and pattern. It is absolutely normal for your baby to achieve these milestones sooner or later than this. But sometimes you may notice your baby lagging way behind, such as:
Your baby is not able to speak or speaks less than five words.
Your baby is unable to walk, even with support.
Your baby is not able to understand simple requests and commands.
Your baby seems disinterested and does not make eye contacts.
If you notice any of the above-mentioned symptoms or any other unusual symptoms in your baby, it is recommended that you consult your doctor as soon as possible for the same.

Varicose Veins during Pregnancy
The most troubling symptoms of pregnancy are the various health issues you must confront due to the changes taking place in your body. Such issues can range from minor inconveniences to even fatal complications. One such health problem that your body might develop during pregnancy is varicose veins. Interestingly, varicose veins can be a serious issue or a minor inconvenience depending on the situation.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins, which are also called varicosities or varicoses, refer to bulged, dilated, blood-filled and painful veins that may appear on the surface of your skin. Legs and feet are the most likely body parts to have varicose veins. Many women get varicose veins during pregnancy, though there are other causes as well including menopause, old age, standing for extended periods of time, obesity and heredity.
When you get varicose veins depends on how your veins are working. Blood veins have valves that stop blood from flowing backward. When these valves become weak, your blood does not get pumped back to the heart properly. It may get collected, especially in the lower parts of your body, farthest from the heart.
Why Do Pregnant Women Develop Varicose Veins?
There are many changes taking place at once in a pregnant woman’s body. The increased levels of the hormone progesterone relax the wall of your veins, causing the valves to weaken. Also, there is an increased amount of blood in your body to be passed on to the baby via the placenta.
The burden of the increased amount of blood, the baby and the placenta bear down on your lower body. It puts excessive pressure on certain parts such as legs and genitals, where you may get varicose veins. Particularly, the inferior vena cava that runs through the right-hand-side of your body is under a lot of pressure. This vein supplies blood from your lower limbs back to your heart.
What are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins in Pregnancy?
Symptoms of varicose veins during pregnancy are just slightly different from varicose veins developed otherwise. Though just the sight of swollen, blood-filled veins may be a sign of varicose veins, other common symptoms are:
Swollen blue and purple veins near the surface of the skin
Soreness, itchiness or burning sensation around affected veins
Tired and achy legs
Discomfort and bulge in vulva, labia, rectum and perineum
Swollen feet due to fluid accumulation
Muscular cramps
Skin diseases such as eczema and ulcers (might develop in extreme cases)
Spider veins clusters of tiny blood vessels on surface of the skin (both spider and varicose veins appear in similar cases, but they signify different problems)
Superficial blood clots in veins, also known as phlebitis (blood clots associated with varicose veins during pregnancy must be differentiated from deep vein thrombosis or DVT and pulmonary embolism, which are much more dangerous)
What Causes Varicose veins while you are Pregnant?
Not every pregnant woman gets varicose veins; certain factors make pregnant women prone to getting varicose veins. The reasons for varicose veins vary from woman to woman.
The main reason why pregnant women get varicose veins is the burden their pelvic region and lower limbs experience due to the weight of their uterus, with vein-relaxing hormones worsening the situation. While these things happen in every pregnant woman’s body, there are particular cases where weak valves or weak vein walls might occur, causing varicose veins.
You are more likely to get varicose veins if you have had the same problem during previous pregnancies. Also, carrying multiple babies, being obese or standing for extended periods of time adds to the burden on your lower body, making you more prone to this condition.
A family history of varicosities might also cause them to come up during your pregnancy.
Varicosities also tend to get worse with successive pregnancies. Veins become weaker and weaker due to ageing as well as the pressure exerted on them before.
How Do I Prevent it?
Taking measures to prevent varicosities can save you a lot of trouble later. Following practices can help prevention:
1. Sleeping on Your Left Side
As mentioned before, the inferior vena cava that carries blood from your limbs is situated on the right-hand-side of your body. Sleeping on your left eases up the pressure and helps balance blood flow. Also, it is desirable that you change positions throughout the day
2. Exercising
Exercising increases blood flow and does not let blood get collected. Moderate exercise during pregnancy is safe and actually recommended by experts. The experts at American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists advise that regular, moderate exercise for 30 minutes or more keeps blood flow healthy. Pelvic floor exercises are most helpful in preventing varicosities, though regular brisk walks are also good
3. Keeping Your Legs Elevated
Doing this helps weak veins improve blood circulation in your lower body. It is advised that you sit down and rest your legs every three hours and never cross your legs. Even while standing, keep shifting your weight from one leg to the other
4. Managing the Burden on Your Body
Gaining weight is important to support the foetus. However, weight gain during pregnancy also exerts excessive pressure on your veins. You should check with your doctor to know how much weight would be good for both you and your baby. To keep added pressure from fluid retention at bay, also consider decreasing your salt intake
5. Keeping a Check on Constipation
Constipation increases the chances of varicosities and can also cause haemorrhoids. Drinking lots of water, having a low-salt diet and eating high-fibre foods help to keep constipation at bay
6. Using Compression Stockings
It’s recommended to use special stockings for varicose veins in pregnancy. Graduated compression stockings are tight towards the feet and loose towards the thighs, which helps in maintaining the blood circulation upward. They are helpful in the prevention of varicosities as well as providing relief from them
It is advisable that you consult your doctor before using special compression stockings, as they may totally restrict blood flow to lower legs, especially if you are obese. It is important to make sure that they make for a comfortable fit and keep your feet snug.
As a prevention measure, one can also use a regular but tighter pantyhose. For genital varicoses, tight-fitting biking shorts are helpful. Make sure you avoid tight clothing on the waist though.
Even in the case of serious varicosities, compression stockings might not provide a complete cure, but they can stop it from worsening further.
Can Varicose Veins Create Complications for Pregnant Women?
Sore and painful varicose veins might cause a lot of inconveniences, but they do not have any serious repercussions. They do not bring complications in childbirth. Even if a woman develops varicoses up to her vulva (the vaginal passage), it might bulge and pain, but it does not impact vaginal birth.
There have also been cases of DVT during pregnancy - a serious condition where a blood clot forms in a vein deep inside your body. However, the likelihood is very low. As per reports, only 1 in 1600 pregnancies have this risk. Please note that DVT is not caused due to varicose veins. If you do have DVT, you need immediate treatment as it can otherwise even be fatal.
Apart from that, some women may not get rid of varicose veins even after child birth, and they might become a permanent ailment.
Does It affect my New Born Baby?
No, varicose veins do not affect the new born baby. It might be very inconvenient and painful for you when you get varicose veins, but it would neither cause any complications during childbirth nor harm your baby in any way.
Do Varicose Veins go away after Pregnancy?
Varicose veins start disappearing after your pregnancy is over. Generally, it happens within three to four months of pregnancy, but in some cases, it might even take longer. If you had a severe case of varicosities, or have had multiple pregnancies or haven’t been careful enough with varicose veins during pregnancy, your veins might not shrink to what they were before you were pregnant.
Even if varicoses disappear after pregnancy, they are likely to appear again during subsequent pregnancies.
In some rare cases, varicose veins become permanent and persist even after the pregnancy is over. In such cases, they are not harmful, but women prefer to get rid of them for aesthetic reasons.
Treating Varicose Veins
For relief and minor treatment of varicose veins in pregnancy, all the things mentioned for prevention also work well. You can use some compression stockings, or resort to exercises that are known to improve blood circulation for treating varicose veins. Developing simple habits like elevating your legs, improving your diet, etc. is also helpful.
You must not go through any surgeries while you are pregnant, especially if injections or incisions are involved. For more detailed advice and treatment, you can visit a phlebologist or vein specialist.
For a permanent treatment of varicose veins, you should wait till you have decided not to have babies anymore. This is because varicoses might appear again with another pregnancy despite extensive treatment.
For permanent relief, treatments like endovenous therapy, micro phlebectomy, and sclerotherapy are used. In such treatments, a small incision is made in veins, and they are treated with either laser treatment, heat therapy, or chemicals delivered through injections or fibre devices that are inserted through a small opening made in your vein, which is later closed.
Such treatments are very expensive and require expertise. Side effects may vary according to what kind of treatment you use, but generally include allergic reaction, swelling, clotting, etc.
Home Remedies for Varicose Veins during Gestation
As medical treatments are known to be expensive, you can resort to home remedies to seek relief. Most remedies are effective during as well as after pregnancy. Some popular home remedies for varicose veins are:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apply concentrated apple cider vinegar on the affected area and massage gently. Massage your legs regularly every morning and before going to bed. Massaging with apple cider vinegar helps because it is known for its blood-cleansing properties and it also improves blood flow. It can help reduce the pain and swelling in your veins by aiding blood flow and circulation.
2. Cayenne Pepper
Make a mixture by adding one teaspoon of cayenne pepper to one cup of water and stir well. Drink this mixture three times a day. This remedy works over a period of one to two months. Cayenne pepper helps increase blood circulation because of its vitamin C and bioflavonoid content. It also helps reduce pain and swelling.
3. Olive Oil
Massaging with olive oil stimulates blood circulation. Massaging with warm oil is always desirable since it can help in reducing itching. Olive oil is also beneficial in combating pigmentation. Mix equal amounts of vitamin E oil and olive oil for better results.
4. Garlic
Garlic is known for stimulating blood circulation and relieving inflammation. It can also break up the harmful toxins which get accumulated in your veins and at the surface of your skin due to restricted blood flow.
For using garlic to relieve varicose veins, you need:
Six garlic cloves
A clean glass jar
Juice of three oranges
Two tablespoons of olive oil
Instructions:
Slice the garlic cloves, put them in the jar, add orange juice and olive oil and let the mixture sit for 12 hours.
Shake well before massaging it onto your veins.
Wrap the area with a cotton towel and leave it overnight.
This must be repeated daily for good results.
5. Parsley
Parsley is rich in vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant and increases collagen production. It helps in repairing and forming new cells.
For using parsley for massaging the affected areas, boil a handful of chopped fresh parsley in one cup of water for five minutes.
Allow it to cool down and strain out the water.
Add one drop rose and marigold essential oil each.
Refrigerate it and massage after some minutes using a cotton ball.
Varicose veins are a distressing challenge that many pregnant women confront. It is important for you to be aware of various problems and aspects related to varicose veins for your own safety and your baby’s health.
There is nothing to worry about if you develop varicosities, but even if you find them troublesome, you now have enough knowledge about them to deal with this problem and make the right decision for yourself and your baby. Read more

Baby Blues and Depression - Here's How You Can Cope
When you're carrying your little bundle of joy, you'll be excited for the arrival of the baby and will be treated like the princess who's going to give birth to the next generation of your wonderful family. Indeed, becoming a mother is a blissful and proud feeling. However, it's only after the birth of your child that you realise that motherhood not only brings in happy moments but also throws some challenges and sad moments your way.
Anything could be the reason for depression. Some reasons that made me sad were:
I used to sleep away to glory before and now, I was barely able to get an hour's deep sleep.
My husband and I used to go out every weekend but now, I don't even have the time to speak to him or care for him.
I used to be an outgoing extrovert and now I am confined within my home, having to attend to the different cries of my son.
My whole body was aching after the process of labour and delivery.
Simply put, I find that I am not the same person I used to be.
No doubt, I love my little one like anything, but I also gradually realised that feeling sad about all the new changes that childbirth brings with it is completely NORMAL.
Gradually, I came out of the feeling and now, I'm much more grateful and happy. Here, I would like to share some things that helped me cope up with my baby blues.
I started writing a diary. I wrote about each new thing my little one did that made me happy. Writing this will make you observe your little one keenly every day, and you will forget all other worries.
The first time I checked the weight of my baby, I felt very happy that my breastmilk is helping my baby grow. This feeling that a human is growing with your bonding is simply divine and the very thought of it makes me get up with extra energy in the middle of the night. So every time your baby pees or poops, be happy about it, as it means he's feeding well.
I started talking to my husband, exclusively sparing at least 10 mins of my time only for him. I am sure you can get this time and keep telling each other that you love each other a lot. Expressing yourself makes you feel a lot lighter.
I started conversing with my mom, asking her how I was as a child and also about my sibling and cousins. Listening to all this will make you feel that all that you're going through is completely normal and every lady has to sail through this journey in their lifetime. So, why not make the journey happier by saying that this too shall pass?
Most importantly, give yourself time. Patience and dedication is the greatest quality required to raise a baby. Think of all the positive blessings in your life.
Realise that you are blessed and realise that as each day unfolds, things will be better. Cherish and enjoy the world's best feeling - MOTHERHOOD.

"Babyhug bath tub with bather for newborn best buy review "
Bathing time is the most fun time for babies. They laugh, cry and yet enjoy their comfort zone. I am Sonam Prasad, a new mom for the second time.
I was recently browzing through many websites as I wanted a bath tub bather for my angel and I received this BabyHug Bath Bather in my suggestions. Like we all know that bathing is time consuming and task for moms. I really like this tub as it is big in size and easy to use.
Thanks to the firstcry for keeping this essential item in your list.
Earlier, I had to keep my baby on my lap and then bathe her but now, I use this tub daily. It now hardly takes me 20 mins to bathe her.
Just like every other mom even I have to take extra care to their baby so that she does not get hurt as babies are gentle while bathing. This tub comes as a two piece set in one I store lukewarm water and keep while the other is a slidder on which I place my baby and massge her and give her bath. This has made my life super easy now. This product is made up of plastic and is light in weight. There are various colors available, I have choosed beige color.
The best thing that I like abolut this product is that it is easy to handle and it does not have sharp edges that would harm the baby. It would be best if there could be a handle so that if we need to life it then it would be more convienent. This tub can be used for long term its best for newborn to 18 months. I surely recommend all new moms to have this product in their bathrooms it really makes bathinh an easy job.
