Green Stools in Infants
Changing your infant’s diapers every day would inevitably lead to an inspection of the poop. The size, texture, colour, consistency and smell would be all too familiar. So, what happens when you notice that your baby’s poop is green instead of the standard yellow-ochre? Is it the time to panic? Absolutely not! Green poop needn’t necessarily warrant a visit to the doctor’s clinic. Educating yourself on the possible causes should be enough to put you at ease, because almost every baby has pooped green stools at some point.
What Causes Green Poop in Babies?
Below are some of the reasons for green stools in babies:
1. Transitional Poop
On breastfeeding after the baby’s birth, she will pass her first stool in the form of meconium (a dark green substance forming the first faeces of a newborn). As your baby begins feeding on breast milk, this poop will transition from black/green/brown to yellow. This is natural and is no cause for concern.
2. Baby Diet
The inclusion of green leafy vegetables such as spinach or peas could cause green poop. This could be because the baby has eaten the food too fast without properly chewing, or the food has passed through the digestive system too quickly.
3. Imbalance of Foremilk/Hindmilk
This happens when there is an improper mixing of foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk (milk which comes out first) has a low-fat constitution and is rich in lactose. Hindmilk (comes out after foremilk), on the other hand, is rich in fat. Together, they form a perfect blend that is required for the baby’s diet. However, when there is an abundance of foremilk, the baby is full before she can get to the hindmilk. This causes digestive problems as there may not be enough lactase to break down the lactose, leading to a green coloured stool.
4. Teething
When babies go through their teething phase, they end up swallowing excessive drool which can lead to intestinal irritation. This irritation leads to a green, mucous-like stool.
5. Illness
The baby may have a viral infection or may be suffering from stomach flu, both of which lead to diarrhoea in the form of watery green stools. Continue breastfeeding your baby under such circumstances, as breast milk contains antibodies that can help boost the baby’s immunity. If it persists for more than a few days, please take your infant to the doctor as she may run the risk of getting dehydrated.
Here are some signs that your baby might be dehydrated:
Your baby is crying with no tears
Your baby has dry lips and a dry mouth
Your baby hasn’t wet her diapers in over 3 hours
Your baby has sunken eyes or cheeks
Your baby has a sunken soft spot on the top of her head
6. Mother’s Diet
Is your diet filled with a lot of greens such as spinach and peas? Or have you consumed any foods that contain artificial colouring? This can be the reason for your child having green poop. Breast milk in such instances is also green, which is not harmful in any way.
7. Medication
Iron supplements tend to give out green coloured stools, which is normal. In fact, if it isn’t green or black, it’s a sign that the supplements aren’t working.
8. Allergic Reaction
If your baby is allergic to something that has been consumed by the mother or directly by the baby, it may result in a green stool. This could be cow milk or some form of medication. However, allergic reactions are accompanied by other symptoms such as skin rashes or mild breathing problems. Though not fatal, it is best to go to a medical professional for a consultation.
9. Jaundice
Some newborns may contract jaundice as their livers are immature and unable to process the bilirubin produced by the body. This is normal and often disappears in a week or two. Anything more could be an indicator of an underlying liver condition, and a trip to the doctor is advised.
What are the Possible Treatments?
Most causes for green stools are harmless and do not cause any long-term damage to the infant. However, there are some which may warrant some form of treatment.
An upset tummy caused due to a viral infection can result in diarrhoea and green coloured stools, which brings in another problem: dehydration. Dehydration can, fortunately, be remedied with the help of an oral rehydrating solution that should be given based on the baby’s weight.
For children suffering from a severe case of jaundice, phototherapy is used to accelerate the bilirubin removal by the body. In some instances, a doctor may advise a glycerine suppository.
Oversupply of milk can be regulated to prevent green stools. This can be done through a variety of techniques such as:
Exclusive Feeding: The problem arises when there is too much foremilk without adequate hindmilk. Exclusively feeding on one breast alone for a certain number of feeds would ensure that the baby gets both the parts of the milk. If the other breast starts getting too full, you could use a pump to relieve the pressure.
Medication: If there is an oversupply of milk, one can try out medication such as cold medicines which reduce milk supply as a side-effect. However, this approach should only be used after careful consultation as there may be other side effects.
Consumption of Cabbages: Cabbages are known to reduce the supply of milk. You can apply some chilled cabbage to your nipples for about 30 minutes no more than three times a day.
How to Prevent Green Poop in Infants?
Avoid eating green leafy vegetables as they can cause green-coloured stools in infants.
Avoid giving cow’s milk to an infant as it could result in green stools due to a lactose overload.
Chart your and your spouse’s medical history to avoid giving any food item that can cause an allergic reaction in your baby.
If your child has an allergic reaction, you can try an elimination chart to figure out which food is the cause of the reaction. The elimination method is where your and your baby’s food intake is recorded on an everyday basis. If the child gets another attack, the parent notes down which food was eaten before. That food is discontinued for a few days and then reintroduced – if there is another allergic reaction, it is confirmed that your child is allergic to that food item.
When to Call a Doctor?
Green poop in most cases is not a problem, but it’s important to watch out for any other symptoms that are occurring along with it. If your baby is dehydrated, is vomiting for longer than 24 hours, has a high fever and is being a fussy eater, it’s best to visit the paediatrician.
While green poop may look like it is out of the ordinary, in most cases, it can get resolved on its own without any intervention by a medical professional. The main sign to look out for is the overall health of the baby. If your infant has green poop but is in perfect health, it shouldn’t be a cause for concern. However, if this is a recurrent problem, it might be a good idea to go to the paediatrician to get a professional medical opinion.

Dehydration During Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, other than eating a whole range of healthy foods, you will have to drink enough water too during this phase. Your doctor must have advised you to stay hydrated during pregnancy, and for good reasons, of course! Dehydration can be hard to detect but it can cause several problems during pregnancy. Yes, it can be problematic for anyone, but more so for pregnant women. And while most cases of dehydration in pregnancy are mild, severe cases of it can affect the health of both the mother and the baby.
What Is Dehydration?
Dehydration happens when your body loses more water than it replenishes. So if the water is not replenished lost fluids, you may become dehydrated. Dehydration can lead to other conditions like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and stroke. It can even make your body struggle to perform normal functions. You will need more water during pregnancy as your body will make blood and fluids for your baby, hence staying hydrated is necessary.
Causes of Dehydration During Pregnancy
There are several reasons that could cause dehydration during pregnancy. Noticing the dehydration in pregnancy due to these reasons is vital as you can then take the necessary measures to correct the same.
Increased blood volume: The blood volume in a pregnant woman’s body increases by 50%. This is one of the main reasons for dehydration in early pregnancy. The body requires more water at this stage and will find it hard to retain water.
Morning sickness: About 50% of pregnant women suffer from morning sickness which includes nausea, vomiting, excessive urination, and sweating. All of these conditions result in the loss of water from the body. Morning sickness usually occurs in the first trimester and should ease up in the second trimester. Dehydration is also experienced because of frequent episodes of vomiting.
Formation of amniotic fluid: Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby in the womb, which allows easier foetal movement and the development of the muscular and skeletal structure of the baby. It also protects the baby from any shocks or sudden movements. The formation of the fluid requires water which might cause you to feel dehydrated.
Reduced intake of water: We all know that we should consume around eight glasses of water daily. But a pregnant woman should drink at least twelve glasses of water to stay hydrated. Anything less could result in dehydration.
Excessive sweating: Sweating during pregnancy is common, but if the water is not replaced it could cause dehydration.
Diarrhoea: In the third trimester, you might find yourself suffering from bouts of diarrhoea. This is because of hormonal changes along with an aversion to certain foods that are important to maintain your gut’s health. If you do not drink enough water during this time, you could become dehydrated.
Weather: If you live in a hot or humid place, then your body will end up losing a lot of water. However, turning up the air conditioning might not be the answer. A room that is air-conditioned has very less moisture which could cause you to lose moisture through your lungs.
Age: One of the complications of pregnancy above the age of 35 is the inability of the body to retain water. If you are pregnant and in your mid or late 30s, you should drink more and more water to stay hydrated.
Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration in Pregnant Women
Generally, the normal sign of dehydration is feeling thirsty. Maternal overheating can also be one of the prominent symptoms of dehydration; if you don't drink enough water, your body may find it difficult to regulate heat and you may become prone to overheating. But there are several other symptoms of dehydration that you must watch out for. Dehydration can range from mild to moderate to severe. Let's have a look at their symptoms.
Mild Dehydration
Feeling slightly thirst
Feeling slightly anxious
An increase in heart rate
A decrease in the frequency of urination
Moderate Dehydration
Severe thirst
Tiredness
A decrease in the frequency of urination
Dark yellow urine
Dizziness
Headache
Nausea
Constipation
Dry mouth
Severe dehydration
Extreme dehydration
Dry mouth and chapped lips
Low amounts of dark coloured urine
Nausea, vomiting, and headache
Abdominal cramps
Severe headache
Exhaustion
Fainting
Confusion
Increased heart rate
Increased frequency of breaths
Sunken eyes
Prolonged skin recoil
Low blood pressure
If you notice any of these signs or feel dehydrated during pregnancy, seek medical help immediately as prolonged dehydration can be very harmful to your baby.
Risks
Following are the risks associated with dehydration during pregnancy.
Nausea
Neural tube defects
Low amniotic fluid
Low breast milk production
Premature labour
Complications Related to Dehydration During Pregnancy
Dehydration can affect a pregnant woman in different ways depending on how far along she is. The risks of dehydration in the three trimesters of pregnancy are explained below.
Effects of Dehydration During the First Trimester
Severe nausea and dizziness: Morning sickness coupled with dehydration can become a vicious cycle. Dehydration may cause nausea, while morning sickness may cause dehydration. Breaking this cycle is important. Pregnant women will have to be given IV fluids for dehydration.
Reduced amniotic fluid: The formation of amniotic fluid largely depends on the fluid intake of pregnant women in the initial months of her pregnancy. Low levels of water results in a reduced amount of amniotic fluids. This can result in the baby sticking to the uterine walls rather than floating in the fluid.
Affects the formation of the placenta: A sustained loss of fluids and electrolytes could affect the way the placenta is formed.
Effects of Dehydration During the Second and Third Trimester
Premature labour: When a pregnant woman’s body is dehydrated, the volume of blood decreases. This causes the levels of the hormone oxytocin to increase. Oxytocin is directly responsible for the contractions of the uterus. A decrease in hydration is one of the causes of premature labour.
Increase in muscle cramps: Dehydration will cause the body’s temperature to increase which, in turn, causes your muscles to cramp. This condition can be extremely uncomfortable.
Fatigue: Most pregnant women will experience some amount of fatigue. However, dehydration will make fatigue much worse.
UTI: Dehydration in this stage could increase the chances of a urinary tract infection, which could cause complications in the kidney and result in early labour.
Treatment for Dehydration During Pregnancy
If you are experiencing mild to moderate dehydration during your pregnancy, then the best way to tackle it is by drinking more water. If your dehydration is caused by nausea and vomiting, talk to your doctor about getting medication for nausea. This will help you ingest more water and curb nausea too. Check with your doctor if you can drink electrolyte supplements as they can help balance your system. However, in the case of severe dehydration, you may have to visit the emergency room and be administered IV fluids for dehydration.
How Much Water Should a Pregnant Woman Drink?
Most doctors recommend that you increase the water intake according to the colour of your urine. The urine should be either clear or light yellow. In case the colour is dark yellow or orange, you should have more water in the day. If you indulge in light activities, then a good rule of thumb is to have one cup of water for every hour of the activity. If you exercise regularly, you need to have more water to match the loss of water.
Many people don't realise that they are thirsty. If you tend to forget to drink water and don't feel thirsty often, you must keep a journal to note the time and amount of water consumed. This can be done via an app as well, as it will give you reminders on when and how much water to drink. So have a glass of water before and after a meal. This will not only help you remember to drink water but also help with any issues related to constipation.
How Can Dehydration Be Prevented During Pregnancy?
There are many ways in which you can ensure that you stay hydrated during pregnancy.
Drink enough water and drink slowly (and at frequent intervals). Drinking too much water too fast can put too much pressure on your kidneys.
Drink one cup of water for every hour that you are awake.
You can even add a couple of slices of lemon, or a few pieces of watermelon in your glass of water for a different taste.
Incorporate liquids into your diet. Soups and fresh fruit juices are great sources due to their water content. Make sure that the juice is made at home and that it is sugar-free.
Do not consume caffeine, soda, or processed fruit juices with too much sugar. These substances act as a diuretic which is counterproductive.
Avoid strenuous exercise and going out when it is hot. You will lose a large quantity of water and put unnecessary pressure on your body.
When Should You Call the Doctor?
Dehydration can cause alarming symptoms. You must immediately rush to the emergency room if you feel a weakness in your pulse or have a spell of fainting. Apart from these, having a rapid heartbeat along with bloody stools also warrant a visit to the doctor. If you haven’t urinated for more than eight hours, you must contact your doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Read on for answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about dehydration during pregnancy.
1. How Can Dehydration Cause Premature Birth of the Baby?
Since dehydration decreases the volume of the blood, the level of the hormone oxytocin will increase. This hormone is responsible for, among other things, the contraction of the uterine walls. If dehydration hits in the later months of pregnancy, the contractions could be strong enough to send you into premature labour.
2. Does Dehydration Cause Cramps in Early Pregnancy?
Dehydration will cause the temperature of your body to increase. When this happens, your muscles may begin to cramp. Dehydration can occur during any stage of your pregnancy. It is imperative that you stay hydrated by drinking enough water along with making sure that you eat fresh fruits on a regular basis.
Dehydration is a condition that can catch you unawares. So, keep track of the amount of water you drink as well as the colour of your urine. Use apps or set reminders to drink your daily recommended amount of water. Remember, you are now drinking water not just for yourself but also for the child growing in you. So stay hydrated and consult a doctor if you face any complications during this time. Read more

Keeping Your Sex Drive Alive in Pregnancy
Pregnancy is marked by physical and internal changes in the body. The changes in hormones cause fluctuating moods, heightened craving for particular things and an increased disliking for people! One important aspect of our daily life that is subject to fluctuation with the change in hormones is the want for sex.
Factors That Increase Sex Drive During Pregnancy
In addition to the hormonal changes, there are various other factors that are responsible for high sex drive in pregnancy.
Many women experience an increase in libido in early pregnancy which is accompanied by enhanced lubrication of the vagina and hypersensitive clitoris. The increased flow of blood to the genital area makes it more sensitive, thereby increasing the pleasure quotient.
The breasts become fuller during pregnancy, resulting in increased sensitivity. This is also one of the factors which contribute to increased sex drive during the period in women.
What Happens When Your Sex Drive Drops While Pregnant?
The tricky part about sex drive during pregnancy is that it can be different for different women. While some feel an increased urge for sex, the others might experience a low sex drive pregnancy.
The hormonal changes accompanied by continuous changes in the body can cause nausea and drain out energy from the body, especially during the first three months, resulting in decreased sex drive during early pregnancy.
One should remember that it is completely okay if sex is the last thing on your mind during the initial phase of pregnancy. With so many changes within a short span of time, the desire to avoid sex during pregnancy can at times be overwhelming.
Some Best Tips for Your Pregnancy Sex Drive
Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in the life of parents and you can use the increased libido to spice up things with your partner as you prepare for the arrival of a new life. Here are tips that will guide your pregnancy sex drive.
1. Experiment with different sex positions: With the baby bump taking shape, you will have to experiment in order to discover a comfortable and a pleasurable position. The increased estrogen levels will provide natural vaginal lubrication but issues such as sore pelvic ligaments might call for change in positioning.
2. Let intimacy flow freely: Intimacy while pregnancy is bound to strengthen the bond with your partner as you welcome your baby. Kissing, gentle massages and touching will help release oxytocin, the love hormone.
3. Cuddle: Pregnancy is a period where you may require additional emotional support and care from your partner. The prenatal hormones can have an impact on your emotions and leave you teary-eyed after lovemaking. Feel free to ask your partner for extra cuddles and explain the importance of the same to him.
4. Seek professional help: In order to overcome the apprehensions and doubts about sex drive during pregnancy, you can seek professional help by consulting your doctor or midwife. It is always a good idea to let a professional guide you, especially if the sex drive is playing too much on your mind.
Precautions to Take
Although it is considered safe to have sex throughout the pregnancy period, women can experience discomfort and adverse impact from sex during pregnancy. Women may struggle with issues of fatigue, stress and serious medical issues.
Sex might result in spotting or bleeding or can lead to conditions like placenta previa. It is best to avoid having sex under such circumstances and consult the doctor immediately for further help. Sex should be avoided after the water has broken.
Does Sex Help Induce Labour?
Although there is no scientific backing for the fact that sex can speed up the process of labour, there is no harm in trying it out. During an orgasm, woman experience a rhythmical contraction of muscles in the genital area which can aid in the labour process.
It is a good idea to have unprotected sex as you near your due date as the male semen contains prostaglandin and the body releases oxytocin as you reach climax. These two chemicals are also used artificially to induce labour and can be of help to get your labour started. Having sex as you draw closer to the due date can certainly be of some help in fastening the process of delivery.
While there are a lot of misconceptions that surround sex during pregnancy, it is considered to be safe to practice sex during this period. Sex drive during pregnancy is dependent on various factors and may vary from one woman to another. While one may feel an uncontrollable sex drive, the other might want to avoid it completely during the same stage of pregnancy.
You should be open to discussing how you feel about sex with your partner and let them know your expectations.
However, in case of any queries or ambiguities in mind regarding sex during pregnancy, it is best to consult your doctor and get a complete understanding of the dos and don’ts before you indulge in lovemaking.

Things You Should Know While Travelling By Train During Pregnancy
Pregnancy necessitates a lot of changes in a woman’s life, and even the simplest activity needs to be reconsidered. Travelling when pregnant is a subject of much discussion, and most women prefer to avoid it altogether. Yet, if you must, it helps to weigh the different options to assess which is best suited. Read on to consider the pros and cons of train travel during pregnancy and to help decide if it should be your preferred mode of transport.
How Safe is Train Travel During Pregnancy?
Train travel can be quite safe for those who have a normal and healthy pregnancy devoid of any complications or issues. In the case of those who may be suffering from any health issues such as high blood pressure or high sugar levels or any other complications, it is better to check with the doctor about the dos and don'ts of train travel. More so, they may evaluate your condition and then either allow or prevent you from travelling.
Morning sickness is a common issue amongst most pregnant women, especially during the first trimester. In such a case, it is better to wait and travel during the second trimester as by then, train movements or any odour in the train may not make you nauseous.
Pros And Cons Of Train Journey For Pregnant Women
Train travel is quite safe during pregnancy for most women who do not have any serious health issues. Here are some pros and cons you should be aware of before you undertake a train journey.
Pros:
Travelling by train means steady movement of the train, the wheels clacking against the tracks and a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery outside.
Train travel means more comfort as compared to bus, car or plane. There is enough space to allow more movement. You can sit comfortably, or even lay down if you feel tired.
You get to enjoy your time while you are travelling by train. Just enjoy the beautiful nature as it passes by, take a nap, read a book or watch a movie or listen to music on your phone.
Even if it is a simple train, there will be restrooms, which make your travel more relaxed. And if it is a luxurious train, then you can be assured of taken good care of and a chance to enjoy a great trip with best amenities and great food.
Also, no traffic means you reach your destination faster and there is less pollution to take in while travelling by train as compared to road travel.
Cons:
There can be cons depending on which kind of train you take.
If it is a train with not many amenities or if it is crowded, then train travel can be quite inconvenient. If there is no AC compartment, then there will be more discomfort.
The kind of seats you get can also be a con if they are faced backwards, which may aggravate or trigger morning sickness.
Depending on how long you are into your pregnancy, boarding the train can be difficult.
Tips to Make Your Journey By Train Comfortable
Book a comfortable train and a more comfortable seat. If you can, get an air-conditioned compartment, that can ensure a convenient travel.
Though many trains provide pillows and blankets, it will be better to carry your own because your pillows can ensure better comfort. Also, during pregnancy, it is better that you use your own blankets rather than the railways'.
Of course, if it is an overnight trip, then you will have a sleeping compartment, but even if it is a full-day trip, consider getting a sleeping coach, so that you can lie down a little or take rest at regular intervals.
Another point that goes without saying is that you will need to take the lower berth.
Do not take seats near the bathroom or the door.
Try to sit comfortably, keep your legs stretched.
Take a walk every hour so that you do not get cramps or uneasiness. Walks also help in better blood circulation. This can prevent the risk of blood clots.
When you are asleep, ensure that your position is comfortable and, if possible, rest your legs in an elevated position.
Wear comfortable clothing. Opt for comfortable shoes as well, as they ensure that blood circulation is not obstructed.
Ensure that you take seats that face the direction of the train, so that you do not feel any discomfort.
Carry enough tissues and anti-bacterial wipes/ sprays, with you, so that you when you use the restroom, you can wipe off the seat first to avoid urinary tract infections.
Precautions to Take While Travelling By Train
Try to have company, preferably your spouse or any family member or a friend. In case, travelling alone is unavoidable, ensure that you are prepared for the solo trip. Do not carry too many bags. Since you should not lift heavy bags, carry a suitcase with wheels so that you can carry it if a porter is not available.
Arrive a little early so that you have enough time to be ready and board comfortably. It is better to find the exact departure time of the train, so that you do not reach too much in advance and have to wait uncomfortably at the railway station.
Lock your baggage, so that you can safely go to the restroom without any fear of someone stealing your belongings or adulterating any food.
Stay away from any crowds. If there is a rush by the train door, stay away from the crowds to ensure you don't get pushed or injured accidentally.
In case you have to walk a distance to the platform or cross any bridge, it will be better to have a porter or someone carry your luggage.
In addition to the medicines that you are taking, carry medicines for colds, headaches or any infections, after due checking with your doctor.
Keep your phone fully charged always. Carry a power bank with you.
Keep your medical file with you. You should save your doctor's number in your phone under ‘My doctor' or ‘My Gynaec', so that if there is an emergency, the person with you or your fellow passenger can call them up and ask for advice.
It is better if you do not accept food or drinks from strangers. Just say a polite ‘no'.
Precautions Regarding Food and Drink While Travelling By Train in Pregnancy
It is best to carry your own food and water when travelling by train travel during the first trimester of pregnancy. With water, you can depend on bottled water, but ensure that the seal is well in place.
Don't get off any station to buy anything, as the street vendors may not be hygenic. In addition, you may feel the rush to get back on the train in time, which could lead to untimely accidents. Instead, if you require any packaged food, you can buy it from vendors who are passing through the train or at the window.
Carry chocolates, protein bars or any other snacks with you so that you can munch on them whenever you feel hungry.
If it is a short train travel during pregnancy in the third trimester, your home food may last for the whole trip, but if it is a long journey, then you may have to rely on the train food. In that case, check with them and buy well-cooked and hot meals.
Avoid salad, curd or any other food that may not be cooked, as they can get spoilt fast and easily.
Drink lots of water to stay fresh and hydrated. Avoid coffee and tea if possible and if not, then limit the intake. Aerated drinks are a strict no-no.
If you are buying any packaged food, then ensure that you check the expiry dates first.
Train travel for most pregnant women can be hassle-free and fun if you have the proper guidance and support. Prepare in advance and meet your doctor before you set out for an enjoyable trip.

A. You should have started going from the very beginning itself once you get to know you’re pregnant but since you haven’t reached that now if you’re pregnancy has been healthy last five months please get it checked with your doctor also if you need to start with any supplements or diet the doctor would advise you after a ultrasound so please visit your gynaecologist
